I am writing a review for the 18 month to 3 year old story time. I do not have knowledge of the library as a whole. I gave three stars only because I do not know about the library all together.
I have taken my kids to chirp babies in the past. This is a good program, but the time was moved from mornings to afternoons (during my toddlers' nap time). We can no longer attend chirp babies. We attempted to go to the story time for 18 month to 3 year olds. I had been warned by others that the expectations were not the norm (expecting 18 month old toddlers to stay in place the whole time). I went anyway because the description of the event sounds like it would be fun.
I took my two 18 month old boys to the story time. The person leading the group did not smile the entire time she led the book reading and other activities. She told the group that if your child tries to get up and move and/or walk that the parent was required to grab them and stop them immediately. No toddlers were allowed to walk around during the story time and/or active singing time, etc. If your toddler cannot sit still, you should move them to another area of the library -- away from the group!
I have two active 18 month old kids. The description of event makes it sound like the kids will be doing fun things. Instead it was awful! I do not believe that the person leading this event actually enjoys her job. Another example of how silly it was, she put out a bubble machine and before she would do the bubble machine, we were told the kids had to be sitting down (they were not allowed to get up to pop bubbles!)! We had to have them on their bottoms. Her words were, "The two Bs go together, bottoms and bubbles." My kids had to sit down while she held the bubble machine out over their heads (literally). Then she proceeded to read a very boring and non-engaging book.
A person in this position should know how to engage kids of this age in activities and understand development and what is appropriate and how they will act. They should know how to start, teach and end a program and not be afraid that the kids will actually have fun (not get out of control but have fun). I have taken my kids to a few places for similar programs. There are some really good programs with good leaders (who clearly enjoy their jobs). The Lake Oswego story time for 18 m to 3 yr olds was/is by far the worst one we have attended. I won't be going back unless a new person is leading and the rules for the kids change. I give zero stars for the 18 month to 3 year old story time.
