I opened a book a few years back and some one vomited in a book and left it there.

After living in various parts of Oregon and using multiple public libraries, I can say that I feel comfortable and confident giving the Deschutes public library system a fair review. Library hours are variable for each library. So check the hours before stopping by. Pros…Like all Oregonian public libraries this library is no different for: -Access to a diversity of books -Interlibrary loans -Ease of use for digital items (ebooks, audiobooks etc) -the basic library patron perks Cons: -My experience with some of the employees has been less than positive. I have noticed that there are a few rotten apples and even when I inform the library about my experiences they don’t do much to correct the problem (I am not talking about firing people by the way). -At the Downtown library I had an employee at the front desk redirect me to the self check out computers when I wanted her to check out my 5+ books at the front desk. I mean, self check out is only faster if 1) there is a line for checking out at the front desk 2) you have a couple books. This was simple laziness on behalf of the employee. -At the East Bend library I had two of the employees ignore me completely when I stated that I was next in line while I waited to get a pass to a local museum. I literally had a grown woman cut in line in front of me. How trashy. One of them stated that since she “didn’t see” anyone cut in front of me I therefore wasn’t second in line. I was essentially called a liar. Needless to say, these two employees were disrespectful and the whole situation trashy in the extreme. My complaint to the library went unanswered. I would give the Deschutes Public Library system a higher review, but: 1)in good conscious I cannot since I have not experienced this level of unprofessional behavior by any staff member (except here and by three of them!) at any other public library in the state. 2)they don’t try to provide any form of adequate follow up to patron complaints. 3)I don’t feel that any other patron can benefit from my complaints (what’s the purpose of complaining if a solution isn’t part of the equation My review has to be fair and I feel that this is fair.

The best library in bend. Unfortunately the architecture can make the second floor loud.

I just wish in the Redmond Branch that you would limit SOME computer Internet area for adults only. The kids play online war games and talk loud and yell at each other during the game while they are online. This is VERY disruptive, and I deserve to have quiet while I'm using the library, too, please. I always ask them nicely to please be quiet, but they make fun on me and just keep on talking loud and acting out. It would certainly be easy enough to limit the library card to over 18 years for these adult areas. There are already teens Internet areas and kids Internet areas for these kids to use, so why are they using the Internet lab and behaving so badly? They also have access in school. On the other hand, I do NOT have affordable access without the public library, which I am VERY grateful for (and happy to pay taxes for); however, this makes my experience very poor in the library. I've complained about this for years, now, and nothing is ever done. Please think about doing something about this. Thank you!
