This zoo truly exceeded my expectations! My husband and I spent 3 hours here! We read every exhibit and saw every animal, which is something we don’t typically do. The majority of the animals have individual signs with biographies , which is such a nice and personal touch. The signs are well written and educational. The staff was friendly toward the animals and you can tell they really care about them. We are grateful for this rescue zoo and all that they do for these beautiful creatures!

Sandra Jaramillo

Such a great place to visit. The animals are well taken care of & the workers are so nice & caring . Their dedication is noticeable. Thank all of you for your good/hard work . Your a blessing for all the rescues.

Gladys Dela Cerda

Super great place to take your little ones! This is the best “zoo” experience I have ever had! Super and open place! definitely a must do if you’re ever in Austin.

Suzzette Reiltly

What is amazing time me and the girls had at the zoo. We wanted to do something a little outside of the box besides drinking and partying and decided to go spend the day at the zoo and it was a great idea. Not only did they have great exhibits but the food there was excellent

Loved it! My family had the pleasure of visiting this zoo yesterday and it was amazing! Groupon had a sale going on so admission was super cheap for a family of four. We stayed for hours, I like how there were so many tables set up around the park so we were able to have a picnic as well. The zoo felt more personal compared to a city zoo. My kids enjoyed feeding the animals, all the peacocks walking around, up close views of the bigger animals such as the lions, bears, cougars etc. the train ride was beautiful I only wished it ran more frequently instead of running at the top of every hour. But the views and tour of some of the animals made up for it!

Horrible experience at the Austin Zoo located at 10808 Rawhide Trail, Austin, TX 78736. From the moment we walked in all you see from afar is cages. As we walked up to feed the goats, my first thought was how rundown it looked. The goats, llamas, sheep and deer seemed to be the only animals really moving around because they are the only ones visitors could feed. As we continue on, the conditions just seemed to keep getting worse. Most animals had barely any drinking water, not one cage with the turtles had somewhere for them to go lay in cooler water (yes, I did say cage for turtles) so instead they were hiding in what appeared to be different little homemade animal houses all crowded in together just to keep out of the sun. It was at least 95 degrees the day we went. As we kept walking, which was also hard since there are no paved walkways so pushing a stroller through is almost impossible which we had to do with a double stroller, more and more animals were just laying anywhere they could find shade (having us question if some were possibly dead even). If they did move, it was so slow and made them seem more lethargic than they already had. The tiny monkeys were also all in small cages, not in just a bigger enclosure to swing and play freely which just made us feel sorry for them. Again, just continuing on, looking into the many cages of animals, little to no water was around for these poor animals. The conditions are so bad. They say this is a rescue zoo, but with all the zoos throughout the state, I really feel if these animals could just be rescued from the Austin zoo and disbursed among all the other zoos they would be much better off getting the care they truly deserve. My family and I will never return to this zoo, it is not an experience I would like either of my kids to remember.

We have an annual membership to the Austin Zoo and we love coming here with our baby boy. It is a very small zoo but we love that about it. We talk to the zookeepers often and they always answer our questions.

Lisa Phillipson

Best rescue zoo I've been to. Really nice selection of animals both domestic and not -- too bad most of them got there due to silly pet owners not knowing how to take care of their pets (or the legality of owing them). Glad they get a second chance in this wonderful space!

Michele Hardy

Wonderful place to view rescued wild animals and very educational. Train takes you around property for fun time.

Brad Wood

Well shaded and the animals are friendly. Would recommend coming here in the morning during the summer because the animals sleep through the heat of the day.

ryan gibson

Really?? Satisfying for animal lovers??? But are the animals satisfied...this is horrible. They belong in the wild, not is small cages with chains... people who like this are pathetic...

Aj Cobb

Great rescue with the right mission in mind!

cody whittington

This was a completely random trip, but were pleasantly surprised during our trip to the Austin Zoo. All the animals look happy and healthy, and it’s a great way to spend an afternoon.

Jessica Sasse

The Austin Zoo is located outside of The city limits about 15 minutes northwest of Beecave. It is a small park by zoo standards, which in my opinion makes it stress free and allows you to really experience the animals. Its very easy to park, stroller and wheelchair friendly, and very affordable. I’d recommend to pack a lunch as there’s only snacks and light refreshments in their cute little gift shop lobby. You can probably walk the zoo circle in an hour depending on how long you’re at each exhibit. The walkways are gravel and shaded, and there’s benches you can just go and watch the animals. The park is mainly a rescue facility consisting of big cats, wolves, birds, and primates that have needed to be homed. They have a cool reptile building, as well as a fun petting area full of tortoise and goats. I love their donation system. You can specify which exhibit you want to help with, buy a mountain lion a treat, or help fund a monkeys new tree-fort. Always a fun and relaxing visit. Thank you for your dedication @austinzoo.

Ernie Cox

This zoo is very unique in the setting and overall ambience of the zoo. I expected the typical 'big city' feel and commercialization that most zoos have - however, this one was very different. It felt like something bigger - like a rescue should. There were no lines or overbearing crowds - just a leisurely stroll through a large variety of amazing creatures. I highly recommend this if you are in the Austin area! Very affordable and the money goes to a great cause! ...And make sure to pay for a bag or two of food before you go in - it is well worth the experience!

Eleanor Parker

A great little zoo with a wonderful mission.

Nessa_eats93

This is the best zoo in my opinion to go! Everyone is nice there and all the animals are close up with visitors. Your able to watch lions eat a blood popsicle and the monkeys are very inactive with you. The goats are very fun to feed. Also the my spouse and I was able to watch the tiger pace back and forth stalking other people which is awesome to watch since the cages and walk paths are only a few feet away unlike other zoos where you stand almost half a mile away and try to find the animal hoping it’s not hidden. We went yesterday and actually considering going back again today instead of trying to find a popular attraction I. The Austin area.

Christopher Malone

Definitely not a full sized zoo, or even half the size for that matter. Pretty hot with no fans whatsoever. You get a closer look at the animals then regular zoo's though. It would be better to call this an Animal rescue center, rather than a zoo. You have to go down tiny back roads in order to get their. Overall mediocre experience. Nothing special, but the closest thing to a zoo in the Austin area.

Fredy Cruz

It's a decent zoo. It doesn't compare to Houston or San Antonio zoo. There is a lot of uneven walking surfaces that made it almost impossible for my 1 and a half year old to walk without tripping. Animals are well taken care of and the train ride was fun! Finished touring the zoo in about 2 hours. We had higher expectations for this zoo due to Austin being the Texas capital.

Carl Johnson

Great for the kids -- particularly feeding the goats and alpacas. Makes you feel good to see the animals have natural habitats.

Joshua Beal

Used to bigger zoos. But it was fun. There is not really a place to cool down except the gift shop. The strollers that are for rent are not much for pushing in the gravel. So bring your own bed l because they don't even have space to put anything in them.

Salini Ns

We really liked the zoo, especially my 8 yr old daughter lived it. Also getting to feed the animals was the best part.

My Personal Opinion

I absolutely LOVE how they take in and rehab all the hurt animals. I'm not one who is terribly excited about typical zoo's and keeping animals from their natural habitat, but when they are doing it for the right reason, and rehabbing the injured, I am all for it. Way to go, we donated to y'all and keep doing what you are doing!

Carol Pettijohn

Austin Zoo is one of the best zoos I've been to! Seeing and learning about the animals made for a great day and a really fun date.

Cindy Gibbs

We enjoyed our visit. It's a little zoo and rehab so you have to keep that in mind when visiting. It's not even comparable to the Houston zoo and to do so is just ridiculous. A box turtle couldn't flip herself over, so we told an employee. He immediately stopped to go help her. Apparently she does that all the time because he knew exactly which one we were reporting.

Michael Avinash

Lots of kinds of animals, just the right size to go with small kids not too big, loved the train ride. Worth the trip.

Steven Farris

Recently visited the Austin Zoo with my 10 year-old son. We spent a little less than two hours on site. It was a lot of fun! The staff were all very friendly and helpful. There were a variety of rescue animals who all appeared to well taken care of by the facility. It was worth the drive!

Erik Mommsen

I have mixed feelings about this place. I love the premise, and that they try to help animals in need rather than importing animals that don't belong in Texas. However, you really should research their sordid history before visiting.

Charlotte Johnson

We love this sweet little zoo. It's really well shaded and it's easy to get up close to the animals.

Robert Eyers

Great for young kids. The zoo is very accessible and small enough to see the whole thing before they lose steam and interest. Very few exotic animals, but the animals are close up and some can be fed. All animals are "rescue" animals.

Cindy Flores

Definitely different type of zoo. First time going, kids loved feeding the animals, we have many pics and videos, priceless. One thing, wear tennis because the pathways are not made of cement.

Derek Schey

So the Zoo itself only gets 3 Stars but the fact that I got to go with my son's 2nd grade class and it is a rescue zoo makes it 4 stars. All staff were very friendly and knowledgeable, they had wonderful patience with all the kids. One of the best things about this Zoo is all the shade. Very nice on a hot day.

Chris Brooks

It was a nice time my son and I had there.

Filo Madrid

Loved it cuz they take in animals that needed a permanent home. And the have lots of trees around so you're not walking on a hot sidewalk.

SideShow Ashley

ALL of the animals are rescue. If that's not enough, all of them are in their forever homes here. Bring good shoes and the kids! This is an excellent experience for the little ones. They also have a train that runs at the top of every hour. Its educational and just plain amazing.

Teri

This is now my favorite zoo. I grew up going to the Houston zoo and when I went to the Austin zoo I was amazed how close I was able to be near the animals. I took incredible pics of the animals. I think it is awesome to know all the animals are rescued. The staff and volunteers we so friendly and kind. My 2 yr old granddaughter had a blast and I think a big reason is because she could actually see all the animals.

Ambeezibra BoyMOM

We love this zoo/rescue because we grew up 5 minutes from here and it was previously a goat farm. There are lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Monkeys, porcupines, snakes and much more. Plus a train ride and food trucks. It is not your typical paved, crowded, overpriced zoo. It has dirt paths, 75% handicap accessible and 85% shade. It also has a nice gift shop. Beware of the lions. You are only 5 feet away and they like to spray.

Marc Schalscha

I had my three kids with me. Ages where 10. 8 and 5. They had a blast. Staff was informative and very friendly. It was very hot, but with all the shade from the trees it was comfortable enough to enjoy. Thank you for an awesome experience.

Jamie Springs

It was nice and they had some cool animals, but I did expect it to be bigger and have more. It was still a very fun and great experience.

D G

Took my girlfriend her on our first date ever. It was the best. Love you Erika Q.

Dixie Yoder

This was a really fun family trip to take the kids I was babysitting. We went in the morning as soon as it opened to beat some of the summer heat. For an adult and 2 kids (along with 1 bag of animal feed for each kid) it was $35. The zoo is well laid out and I love that they are a sanctuary for rescued animals. Make sure kiddos wear closed tied shoes (walking in dirt and rocks). Train ride was fun for kids but a lot of animals weren't out because of the heat. This would be fun in the fall.

Zelda LOZ

Small, but a nice trip. You can see everything within an 1 hour or 2. However, these animals are up in your face, eating, playing. Definitely a treat to be that close. The train is fun for the kids too. Definitely a nice family trip to enjoy at least once. Plus it's for a great cause.

Francini Lieske

I really enjoyed not only seeing the animals, but learning about their history and how they came to be at this zoo. They are all rescues. The zoo was clean and the services were very friendly.

Joanna Cockrell

Not your typical zoo. Can walk it in 1 hour, but all the animals are rescues and this is their forever home. Each animal has a name and their date of birth displayed. I highly recommend going and paying for such a great cause! They have lions, cougars, monkeys, bears, birds, reptiles, and so much more!

Sarah Bailey

A lot smaller than most zoo's I have been to. Animals looked happier than most zoo's I have been to though. I feel like you only need an hour or two to see everything and that includes going around not once or twice. The peacocks roaming the grounds were pretty awesome. They seemed way less aggressive than other peacocks I've come into contact with.

Bella Scott

Great zoo!! My children were able to walk through the whole zoo without getting too exhausted. I’ve been to other zoos that take forever to see everything. This one was just right. The kids had a blast. Definitely will be back.

Koustav Dasgupta

The place has a lot to offer. You have exotic animals like lions, tigers and Galapagos turtles, and the staff are friendly. All animals here are rescues, and the entry fee goes into their upkeep. The train ride is nice too. Great for the whole family!

Yaboytito smitty

Beautiful scenery reflected the beautiful mission of this zoo. All are rescues or animals surrendered from private collections. We stopped at the info center on our way into Texas and got one free bag of feed with a voucher, but they're only $3 and can feed plenty of the adorable animals they allow you to feed. The facilities were rustic, but it fit the vibe of the location, the zoo is situated outside a residential area in a hill and valley area, which makes it feel like a safari more than a zoo. The staff were all amazing and helpful, and knowing the core mission of the facility made seeing those animals so much more heartwarming. I will absolutely be returning

Kendall Dobkins

This zoo was great and just the right size for my kids. We've been to a few zoos, like the Houston Zoo and San Diego and they're big enough that they seem to be cities of their own! My children were able to walk the entire zoo without getting too tired or losing interest. Their gift shop had cool toys. We genuinely enjoyed the entire zoo. Edit: I wanted to add after the fact that the people who worked here were all amazing as well. They were kind and all had smiles on their faces. They all seemed interested in what my kids had to say or had awesome answers when we asked questions. We'll definitely be going back next time we're in Austin.

Rick Hayden

Really happy for the work put into making these animals comfortable. Fun for the whole family.

Jeffrey Stephen Miller

Great experience for young and old! Many animals to see and learn about and great exercise while touring the hillside habitats all from a non profit operation! What's not to love?

Kellye Sanders

Very neat, simple place. I love that it's a rescue for the animals which is what makes it so important to support.

Mom Price

Absolutely loved it!! The little monkeys were quite a show.

auburn bain

Neat rescue zoo. Kiddos enjoy train ride and feeding the animals. Small zoo, easy to see everything in a short time.

Michele W

I just love this zoo. It's smaller than your big city zoos but has all the animals you need to satisfy an animal lover. I loved the trees shading our walk. It's not overcrowd. The train ride is awesome and the picnic area is great with a full show of male peacocks showing off for the ladies.

Aida Aponte

For it being kind of small, I enjoyed it. The people were polite and three place was very clean

Melanierose Elizabeth

We had a great time walking through the zoo. I was interested to learn that this was a rescue zoo. I would have liked to learn more about each animal's journey to finding their forever home at the Austin Zoo. I was happy to see the names of the animals on the information place. we enjoyed the train ride, especially the parts when we went by the animals. It was like a mini safari! There was a small food truck for concessions and the gift shop had a great selection of souvenirs and mementos.

Jennifer Barbee

We've been going to the Austin Zoo for 20 years now. It has grown and expanded since that time to include a larger variety of animals. All the animals are rescued. The zoo has a park-like hilly atmosphere. It's located in a beautiful location in the hill country. It is a small zoo compared to some in other cities, but very peaceful and cozy.

Stella Prefach

people are very friendly, but more like a petting zoo. Aside from Tiger and lion it's pretty much like being on a farm. My little one had a blast though

Natalie Kirkpatrick-Rich

this was our first time going it's a decent price had no issues using groupon either my son loved it to be a smaller type zoo they had a bunch of animals very enjoyable got thru everything in about 2 hours maybe a little more even with feeding the animals too we know next time to come earlier to see the shows and stuff wished they posted the times online so we know ahead of time so we can catch them but will be coming back

tennellle flake

In all the times we have visited Austin, I never even realized there was a zoo. Took our girls finally and they had a good time. They definitely enjoyed feeding all the animals.

Debra McAdoo-Schultz

This is a great sized zoo for families with small kiddos. Our two- a four year old and 18 mo old- had a great time. Took about 2 hours and we saw everything. Most of the animals were out and "showing off" when we were there around 1pm. Don't know how I feel about some of the enclosures.... especially for our summer heat or the crazy freezes we've had however.

Jessica McEntyre

Austin zoo is the best because it's also a sanctuary. They never sell or buy animals for profit. The animals have a loving home here and are really taken care of. Missed the train last time but will be back soon when it cools down outside :)

Catherine Hunter

I was very upset at the condition that the animals were in. Especially the poor alligator he had zero water! Alot of the animals were very bored nothing to do or interact with. Food and gift shop very expensive. The zoo should have more bathroom areas there's only the 1 area right by entrance. I understand it is very expensive to care for these wonderful creatures however they did not ask to be captured and put on display for our amusement. It is our responsibility to care for the creatures we take in.

L Cooper

Great Zoo that rescues & takes surrendered animals. Clean & worth the visit! You can take in your own water & snacks. We will be back.

Kerry Bradley

Great place to see some amazing wild life. They are also rescue for injured animals and even took some in from hurricane Harvey. Its just south of downtown Austin. You can even see them feed the animals at different times. Worth check it out!!

LeeAnn Carpenter

Very clean, nice staff....simplistic, not fancy but one of the best I've been to. Their true love and passion for animals radiates throughout!

Gwynn Baldwin

Took Gbaby here for her 4th Birthday. This place us a Wonderful place to visit .There were Lions, Tigers & Bears, LOL Very clean and the animals were very well kept

Madeleine Vaughan

I love photography and from now i love this place too. Everything that i actually need i found here. Different kinds of animals ans birds species are present here. I am totally satisfied after visiting this zoo. Surely i will be back.

Aaron H

Fun, authentically independent zoo. You can see lots of animals. A few empty cages. Feed the friendly goats and smell the manure.

Safiyya Suleman

If you come from South Africa or any country where animals are in their habitat and roaming in the wild, this zoo will break your heart. Yes it is a rescue zoo and the animals are in recovery but to see the small spaces that they are confined to is saddening. The animals are all separated which is not at all close to their habitat environments. None the less the tour guides are very knowledgeable and animals look well fed and looked after. In my opinion it was a waste of money to see the animals is such a small confined areas.

London Corzine

WOW I haven’t been here in YEARS and decided to take my little family on a Sunday. Great prices! Make sure you get there early at open time for best parking they have a team in the parking lot directing you where to park which is nice. It was very clean no trash anywhere and the Animals were wide awake to view! Plenty of staff around if you have any questions. Just a great fun Zoo experience its not a big zoo but it’s still fun! They also do a train ride with a beautiful view and it’s only $3 per person!! I would highly recommend

John Bispo

Great concept for a zoo. All of the animals are rescue animals. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. They have done a great thing here, with a smaller budget than a "real "zoo the animals all seem happy and healthy.

Josh Ramirez

Lovely zoo, unlike the Houston or San Antonio zoos. It’s a rescue, non profit. I saw animals up close literally feet away! It’s outdoors and a good size! A petting zoo is also inside so buy kibble at the gift shop. Overall it gave a family owned feel. Very nice employees and a great experience i 10/10 recommended (don’t wear your nice shoes , it’s dusty )

Jp T

Very small zoo. Too hot for a lot of the animals to come out. Still enjoyed it nonetheless. Recieved a good price on Groupon.

Kat

Amazing big - little zoo! It's one of my kids favorite spots in Austin! The best part are the knowledge zoo keepers that are willing to take the time to answer my son's 10,000 questions.

Cyrus Baty

A lot of the animals have been rescued or surrendered and I found it interesting reading their back story and where they came from. This is not a large zoo, but they do have a lot of animals from big cats, bears, monkeys, reptiles, birds, etc. When you purchase your ticket ($11.95 adults, free parking) you can also buy a $3 bag of food so you can feed the llamas, alpacas, deer and goats. My daughter loved feeding the animals, watching the monkeys, and talking to the birds because they will talk back to you. They also have a nice gift shop that is affordable.

Jeff Amsbaugh

Decent selection of sad animals. The wolf had bleeding elbows. It seemed that every time any of the employees walked by any of the cages all of the animals were completely sidelined because they were not getting fed normal rations. Most of the animals were separated from each other and I can only imagine that is because of the poor animal morale that if they were put together it would cause some kind of incitement. This is definitely a zoo I will never go back to them at the same time I really hope that they make some kind of effort toward the animals well-being. Most of the animals were kept in such small enclosures that it really made you feel bad for them.

homemade diys

This is the perfect place to take little ones for the zoo experience. Not too big but just big enough. Nice layout and staff is extremely courteous.

Katherine Olsen

Small but it was so great. A lot to see. Definitely coming back when we visit Austin.

Prasanna Kakade

Small yet of good size to spend hour and a half. Nice collection of wildlife, most of the big attraction are here. Petting zoo can be a bonus for kidos.

Susan Horton

Absolutely LOVE the quaintness of this little zoo. Feels like a small town zoo with its rustic trails. Animals are healthy and happy and you can tell that those who work there are genuinely there for the animals. Be sure to grab a couple of bags of food to feed the goats, llamas, deer and sheep. Don't go too late in the day or you'll find all the big animals sleeping.

Carla Douglas

This is a great place! This place does a great job with the animals. All animals here were rescued or given up. They run mostly on what donations they get. Check website for days, times and other info. You can sponsor the animals too!

Natashia Wesley

Horrible experience, the animals need to be removed and taken to a place that will properly care for them. The "habitats" were pathetic, it was basically just cages placed everywhere. There was no attempt to mimic the animal's proper environments. My kids said they never want to go back. HUGE WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY! I FEEL SO BAD FOR THOSE ANIMALS. Research it, they have a lot of bad press!

Jude S

It is not fancy zoo like the one in any major cities but this place offers better environment for animals and those visit to see the animals. My kids loved it. I would visit this zoo again near future.

Maicie Sykes

I really enjoyed my visit. Some enclosures seem a little small, others are better and bigger. It looks like they work hard to make sure the animals are healthy, there was lots of enrichment. I really liked the signage for each animal with their name and stories. I was also impressed by the variety of species.

Charles Sosebee

What a neat little zoo, a little bit on the small side, that being said it was a treat to check it out during my Austin trip. Better to come early during the summer, the animals hide during the afternoon during the heat.

Michael Jordan

It was alright, needs more money and animals. It's my state's capital zoo, it should have more of everything. If your a Texan and have money to spare, donate to the Austin Zoo. Thank you.

Lauren Rogers

We are members and love the Austin Zoo! Lots of shade, easy to walk around with littles. We love that if you walk a certain way around the zoo the train is the last stop. They have dipping dots ice cream or snow cones for hot days! Make sure you get animal feed to feed the goats and deer.

Taylor Cardon

It was great, maybe not as big as some other Zoos but the animals were all active, the trails were well shaded so it was comfortable for people too. Highly recommend getting animal feed, the kids love feeding the animals. We really got to see a lot of action with the black bears that were playing in the water and with each other, wow they can move and climb

Stacy Dunaway

This is one of my favorite places. I love that all the animals are rescues.

Felipe Santillan

Nice but animals looked very uncomfortable in their small cages. No real shelter from the scorching heat.

Jan Shapland

The Austin Zoo is great. They seem to really go all out to provide appropriate environments for their animals. The staff is helpful and friendly.

Jody Chrestman

We had the best time ever.. we stayed 3 hours there.. we are from Dallas and want to go back again... I tell every one how wonderful it was

Stephen J. Lautenschlager

The Austin Zoo is a very enjoyable natural space with a commitment to conservation, recovery and protection of the animals under their care. Parking is convenient to the front entrance and the staff is very welcoming to guests and informative of the animals in the natural-as-possible exhibits.

Brian King

I applaud the concept here, all donated or saved animals. But too many tortoises and lemurs. Needs more variety?

Gavin68

Awesome little zoo. Very impressed. I am also glad to see that this is one of the ethical rescue zoos.

LaToshia Williams

Fun and Exciting! Great place for the kids. They will truly enjoy.

Natalie Oziran

Many animals. We started with the barn animals. Fed the goats, alpacas, deer, and some sheep. It took us a little over two hours to go around the grounds. I did the mistake to wear flip flops. Best to wear sneakers because there is no pavement. Take insect repellent and drinking water. There are no drinking fountains. Plenty of picnic tables. Overall we had a nice time.

Guadalupe Gonzales

This zoo is wonderful! The creatures of this zoo are rescue animals. This is a great place for a family outing and the profits are used to help rescue animals.

Angela Meyer

Love the Gray wolf exhibit. Dont go in the middle of the day they are all sleeping.

Ryan Tumey

Austin Zoo is located at 10808 Rawhide Trail, avoid at all cost , question every 5 star review. The one and only run down restroom, and over priced food truck here at the entrance is the least of any concerns of this location. Besides small drinking bowls, the turtles had no way to cool off besides hiding out crammed into small huts. The lack of water resources also go for the k-9s,and cats which had only a few inches of water in a blazing hot metal container to lay down in, besides the tiger. All animals, besides goats are lethargic and clearly not comfortable. Knowing that this zoo is a rescue one , makes one believe that a peaceful death would be a better option then to live in these inadequate, run down ,enclosure conditions. If the owner of this facility cannot provide a true sanctuary for the animals through donations, admission fees ,and gift shop purchases ,then the zoo should no longer take animals in. If I can't provide adequate accommodations for my pets cats/dogs,then they get taken away, if not adopted then put down. Cameron zoo is a much better non profit choice all around, and worthy of the drive, it also has a aquarium . These are just a few of the observations that my wife discussed. I hope that people start being more truthful with rating on this place.

Joesph Fountain

Great place to see some amazing wild life. They are also rescue for injured animals and even took some in from hurricane Harvey. Its just south of downtown Austin. You can even see them feed the animals at different times. Worth check it out!!

R Michael Southwick

Very impressive Zoo considering the size. Good variety of species. Lions tigers and bears!

Alan Fink

Not the most modern or "realistic enclosures" for the animals, but decent enclosures. They get 5 stars because the large number of their animals are really rescue animals: wild boar with a club foot, groundhogs/prarie dogs that had socialization issues and fought each other after being raised as sometimes pets. Really dedicated and knowledgeable staff that truly loves these animals.

Becca Ostermayer

Highly recommend this zoo!!!!!! Not overcrowded, shaded, and great for the kids!!!! Bring your own drinks and food....we had lunch in front of the wolf exhibit. And to top it off, the staff was awesome!!!!!!

Mahesh Ganapathy

Loved the zoo, small but interesting animals and reptiles. The kids loved the peacocks roaming about.

Sarah Lansdale

Not paved so my small child was jiggling around the place on all the stones in his stroller. Animal enclosures could be bigger but overall a good experience. It's nice that they rescue some of the animals.

Chris & Lori Flynn

This is a smaller zoo that is the home of rescue animals. It felt as if all of the animals were, although at a safe distance, were close and could be viewed well. The entrance/exit of the zoo, which is in the gift shop, could have been designed better. I would definitely visit again.

Renee Delacruz

Great place for a family outing! Everyone was friendly and helpful. My grandson thoroughly enjoyed our trip to this amazing and well kept zoo.

joshua

Awesome drove from SA to come here. Kids loved it and was way cheaper than SA. Not overly big but you actually see the animals here close up.

Josie Brenner

We loved it. Great way to see some awesome animals up-close without the big city zoo crowds and long-distance walking. Kids ages 5-15 all enjoyed it!

Gabor Ambruzs

We loved this zoo! It's a nonprofit zoo, which is always a plus to us and they seem to take good care of their animals. I highly recommend feeding the Llamas, deer, goats and sheep! Super fun experience and inexpensive.

I love that this zoo is actually an animal shelter. Most animals were rescued from private owners who could no longer take care of them. Get involved, check out their website and see what they need: towels, toys, etc... They also have special Halloween opening hours and events throughout October

The Zoo is comprised of so many beautiful animals. The place is really good option to visit with family. I went here with my family and the children in our family were very happy with this place. They enjoyed themselves and got to learn so much. The kids were so happy that they keep on asking about our next visit. This is a wonderful place.

Dallas Hill

Nice zoo. Smaller, but with good mix of animals. All the animals are rescues.

ashley fabulous

Such a n eww at zoo! You are fairly close to the animals and there is a decent variety of animals! This was a really great stop on our vacation! Everyone was friendly and informative at the gift shop and all the animals were active and happy!

Lynda Cass

It's for very small children. My 2 year old granddaughter loved it. PLENTY of shade, the small train ride was fun.

Brian Cass

After two visits, my family is really loving our little Austin zoo. Small and efficient to get around and the exhibits seem to be setup well as we always seem to get great views of the animals. My son just lives the train as well which is always a great way to end the visit.

One of the best zoos. May be small but it's a amazing addition to the area. Awesome rescue zoo.

Adan Mares

Many Creatures, cool train Ride.

Elza dS

This is a nonprofit zoo made up of rescued animals. So, manage your expectations about what is available. Perfect for young children, who are allowed to feed the goats and the llama independently. Giving it only four stars because the gift shop is quite pricey.

First time in Austin and came to the Austin Zoo & It says on every sign when you come in that and on office building it closes at 6 from sometime in september to october 31 and the lady at the desk insisted since its "winter hours" they close at 5. Just bought items from the gift shop and left. Train closes at 3 also so there is that.

Teresa Cole

It was very fun but because of the time of year that we decided to go it was extremely hot and all the animals are and their habitats and hard to see

Amanda Fietz

Definitely a different experience. I have never visited a rescue zoo before so I wasn't sure what to expect. Almost all the animals were out (a few stayed hidden). I enjoyed reading their signs on how all the animals came to be there.

Danielle Gonzales

It was a nice zoo with active animals. There was a train ride and lots of eating areas. Great place for kiddos. Staff was friendly. Recommend buying tickets online.

Jasmine Patterson

This place was so cute! Well shaded, lots to see, and the price was great! (Found tickets on Groupon) We even purchased food to feed certain animals! We will definitely go back

Duane Godfrey

Seriously amazing being up close and personal with all the animals.

Amber Robison

Looks more like a farm, but it was good because the animals are closer to you so you can see them well. We went around 2 in the afternoon and a lot of the animals were hiding. Recommend going earlier in the day, or evening because it was very hot and a lot of the animals were in shaded buildings so we couldn't see them. It's a good idea to wear tennis shoes because some if the walkways are gravel and dirt.

Harry Connor

Brought my family here and had a wonderful time. The animals were out and about looking very well taken care of. Had good parking with plenty of shade and snacks in the park.

Ambar Altman

Very nice sanctuary. The hybrid wolves are amazing along with all the other animals. My girls had a blast. The train ride was also fun!

Amanda Wilson

First, this is not necessarily a traditional zoo, rather it is a rescue zoo. As a result, it is not what some people who have been to the Bronx Zoo, National Zoo in DC, or San Diego Zoo might expect. That said, my son (7 yo) and I thought it was great. It was a lot of fun to look at the various animals and to read about their back stories and how they ended up at the Austin Zoo. Additionally, when we walked by the monkey, one of the keepers was out working with them and he stopped to tell us about each monkey. We also paid a little extra ($3, I think) for a bag of food for the sheep, llamas, and donkeys). The bag lasted us a long time and was the part of the visit that my son told everyone was his favorite!

Christina Jozwiak

Cute little Zoo. Not too crowded if you go early. The layout is a little weird and hard to navigate. Other than that we enjoyed our trip!

Isabel Velasquez

Really great place and I enjoyed the fact they care so much for the animals

Phil Landram

My wife and I came up from Michigan and we're looking for things to do, so we went to the zoo. We had an absolute blast. The staff is very caring towards you Beautiful Creatures

Ana Gill

Small but cute place with lots of animals that have been rescued.

Winter Sherrod

Very small and oddly organized but it is a nonprofit that rescues exotics from collectors and pet owners so it’s a great cause and still worth going to visit.

Jonny Collett

Nice little zoo, seems more like a animal sanctuary. I personally enjoyed it and donated right before we left to help them out a little more, they aren't pushy on the donations and appreciate every penny.

Andrew Hawkins

this zoo is very caring about there animals will come back soon

Brittan H

A nice rescue center that is called a zoo. This place only has rescued animals but they have a fair share of them including lions, tigers and bears (oh my). Its an affordable trip that gives you a parenting opportunity to talk about the purpose of that zoo versus other zoos.

Justin W

Honestly, it's a beautiful little zoo. Just the right size in my opinion. I'm not a fan of the captive animals concept, but the vast majority are rescues and pet-surrenders. I noticed that a few were transfers from other zoos to keep the rescued animals company. The primate section is impressive and diverse. And you can get quite close - just out of arms reach from their cages. The drive their is also gorgeous - rolling hills and beautiful houses on windy roads. Great experience

Gabrielle Jenkins

This zoo is so unique, like Austin. All their animals come from rescue situations, which takes the experience to a whole other level. The groupon made it very affordable. My kids had a great time feeding the animals.

Brittany Zapata

It is a small zoo...I knew that before going, which was great I have a little one so it worked out perfectly. My husband and kids Loved talking to the Cockatoo the most! All of the bigger animals and birds have well fitting enclosures for their sizes.....the monkey's enclosures are little and I think they need more room!

Jason Williams

Good rescue zoo. We enjoyed the up close interaction with the animals

James Pickell

Always a great experience coming in contact with cool animals they have here...

PhantomWorkz

I personally like it. The zoo is a bit out of the way but, the price is reasonable and it's great to take someone with! There is a really loveable donkey that really tugged at my heart. Never been to a zoo and I'm 27. I had a lot of fun. A decent amount of animals and even ostriches. Nothing really likes to be pet unless you have some food aha. But that donkey. You don't have to feed him at all (even though you aren't allowed to as well) but he just leans a bit on the gate and looks at you like, "rub on me!" I had fun none the less. The cashier gave us a free paper map so we can plan our way out and circled what we could feed on it. All and all. If you need a good date spot this is great. If you can control your kids it's great here too. Gotta keep in mind these animals are rescued and all came from different backgrounds and must be respected with the rules.

Dillon Barclay

Great little zoo. Not comparable to a major zoo that you may be used to, but the animal feeding was perfect for our 19mo toddler.

Kelley ODonnell

Super small for the same price as big zoos like houston. Likited food and bathrooms.

Kinsley Griffin

Love it.Went on a school field trip. Too cold for the main animals to be out, but we just love our zoo! One of the best places in Austin To have a membership and spend the day. Great Sprinbreak for kids.

Alexa Sandford

I love the Austin zoo. I like how they have all kinds of animals. I like how they have a petting zoo or you can feed the goats. I like how they have a train to.

Amber

The staff was friendly and helpful, the bathroom was clean, the animals were well taken care of. It wasn't crowded at all. The over all experience was better than most standard zoos I've ever been to.

Samantha McCann

From all the great reviews I expected more. Small zoo, rough terrain, decent animals. Tourist let down.

Kris Moore

Small zoo perfect for younger kids

Cammie Cole

Couldn't see the animals because half were under vet care or to far off its personally not worth going there I would rather go to Waco zoo the animals seem happier and have a better enclosure

Ricardo López

Small zoo!! good for kids since you can feed some animals

Kayla MacMullen

I love this non-profit zoo! They are always doing fun and creative things with the a i als to keep them to as natural a habitat as can be. My son loves it here!

Cullen Baker

Love this zoo. For its size its really amazing. My son absolutely loved it. The employees are very friendly

Aralia S

This is a cute little zoo to take your kids to spend a couple of hours but every time we go, we see less and less animals. The cages are all far away and covered so it’s hard to see the animals, there is not a paved sidewalks so bring comfortable shoes and it’s not wheelchair friendly. Parking is also a dirt driveway but it’s big. You pay to feed some of the animals but last visit the bag was half of the size than the times before. The only fun thing to do was to feed and pet the goats and the llamas. Anything else was empty or unable to see the animal and it wasn’t even a hot day. They have a gift shop with cute merchandise and they’ve a food truck that sells hot dogs and shaved ice. They have an area with picnic tables. They have a little train that goes around the zoo but you’ve to pay extra $3 to ride it. But it’s cute and the kids like it.
