More like The "GREAT" Zoo! This is a rather small zoo comparing to the one I usually go to (Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium) but it is SO MUCH more quiet which is great for a person who has Autism (I am one of those individuals), the crowds were quiet and really low (went on Sunday during the Summer), the atmosphere is quiet, and even the train whistle out of all things is quiet... it's a great place to relax and see animals. Sure there is not a lot comparing to my local zoo for animals but the animals here are so much more active! My only problem is one hill is very large and steep... this is a big warning for people who have problems climbing hills or are in wheelchairs. Wonderful zoo!

This is a really great place to take your family. At Halloween they have an event called Boo at the Zoo, where they have trick or treat stations set up throughout the zoo for kids, and Halloween decorations everywhere. They have a very cool laser show and planetarium. The gift shop has a nice selection of items to choose from. Not to mention the model train room. They also have Christmas events, as well as kids camps. They have a lot of great animals, and a few animals you can pet. Great family experiences

Lesley Bitzer

Family loves this little zoo. We love it so much we got a membership.

Nice and relaxing! :) Do feel sorry for the cheetah and the bear that's alone, kinda seemed like solitary confinement.

So much to do there

Visited the zoo specifically for the Boo at the Zoo event. I attended the event when I was a small child growing up and wanted to pass the tradition to my daughter in hopes of making favorable memories for her too. The zoo was clean and the employees were friendly and nice. But I was disappointed in the "haunted train ride". I remember he ride being so "scary" with decorations and people in costumes jumping out from behind shrubbery. It was very dull and the decor was lackluster, having only a few hay bales tastefully decorated... they did offer a lazer light show at the end, which I do not remember as a child, but we didn't have time to attend... I will attend the zoo in the future and also be giving boo at the zoo another shot. Maby they were just short handed this year and lacked the manpower to decorate. It's one of the only annual events this time of year, geared towards small children, that I am aware of.

Before I dive into how this encounter went, I'll talk about the actual zoo. it's part of Oglebay resort and so if you're looking to do this experience, search Oglebay. It's called Good zoo because it is named after the family name of a boy who passed away and it is dedicated to his memory. It is a small zoo... quite small with maybe only 50 animals with some of them being common farm animals. I will say that all of the staff here LOVES the animals. It's clear there is a direct concern and interest in taking care of these animals. I was quite impressed with how there is a genuine care for every animal. Even funny things such as a sloth. The zoo is incredibly well kept.. super clean for the animals and also visitors. There are 3 levels of animals encounters you can do... it's mainly based on the number of animals you want to interact with. For the single animal encounter you have 45 minutes and with the Ultimate 3, I was there for a little over 2 hours enjoying every single second and wishing I came with a plan to sneak away with a red panda. We had an AMAZING guide, Sharon (I hope that is her name), who was not only genuinely caring and knowledgeable about each animal. She was incredibly wonderful with us ... coaching us to interact with the animals respectfully to get the most wonderful memories. She also told us some great stories about the animals and how they've been over the years, their species facts and survival, and interesting stories overall. You are able to choose 3 animals from a list of ring tailed lemur (Zoboomafoo!), mongoose lemur, river otter, kangaroo and wallaby, meerkat, or a thing called sloth. I will warn you that some of these animals are booked out MONTHS in advance. Oglebay zoo abides by some sound rules that they dont let these animals become overwhelmed and limit the number of times they interact a week. I think when I was booking, I was told the red panda was booked out nearly 4 months on weekends. If you're booking and looking for the cutest interaction, I found out later there were baby kangaroo being fed by bottles. I still stare at my pictures because I am amazed I got to do this. The red panda interaction was phenomenal. We got two feed both of their red pandas and they were so adorable. If they're in a good mood (and Sharon gauged their mood before we even stepped near them), it's possible they may reach for your hand and pull it into them before nuzzling into your palm to eat. Warning... they're avid tree climbers... they have REAL claws. You could be me just happily grinning ear to ear while not realizing that cute little paw is digging into you. I really wish I could have hugged them but that's not allowed. I will admit the thought of running off with them in my purse was a real idea in my brain. The lemurs were far more active... jumping and climbing among the exhibit as you feed them. It was great to see them leap huge lengths as you set up. They're definitely not as shy as the red pandas and if anything, they're ready to gobble any food you offer them. The one cute scene stealer was an endangered tortoise that shared the exhibit. For me, I really adored him as he sllloooowly made figure 8 around my feet and no one else. Every picture of me had him ON my feet (he's heavy), by my right feet, just off my left feet... even between my feet. We ended our great time here with a dozy sloth who clearly had some fans. I begrudgingly admire how something slow and sleepy be a minor celebrity and live the life. This was a truly an encounter as you're able to hold the sloth as you feed it. Its quite novel as I wasn't expecting this since we were quite cautious in all the other encounter. Overall, I appreciate Oglebay Zoo for having these encounters to allow me to interact with animals I love in pictures but normally would never had the chance to admire in person. I also admire their care for their animals health and welfare. Now... to only hatch my plan to bring back a red panda!

I was disappointed. A lot of walking and not very many animals. This zoo needs major updating. It's almost like it is stuck in the past. I volunteered here 25 years ago and nothing has really changed. Instead of North American animals, it has animals from around the world, but just a small number of them. There is much potential for expansion of new exhibits, but needs someone to take the reigns in order to make this a great zoo.

The staff was highly unenthusiastic, the enclosures were biodiverse and had mixtures that were unnatural for the animals, they also have a highly unprofessional vet staff that when brought an injured bird we found clearly ignored it when it was injured pretty badly. The only reason they got one star was because I am not allowed to give them 0 and still post.

Joe Trusnik

This zoo is very small, but don't let its size turn you off. The exhibits are intelligently laid out so that you can get a good look at the animals on display. I've personally had never seen a kookaburra without a cage between us. If you take the cheap train ride around the park, you even go through the middle of an exhibit, which the animals seem to be used to. This isn't an expensive place, either. Definitely plan on going back to this one.

Very disappointed to hear that the model train room is closing!! So much effort, creativity went into such a wonderful display. Children love that room and we cannot say enough about the helpful “train guides” as well. Families look forward to being a part of that room.

Having a blast riding the zoo train as im typing this

Bianca Miller

Not much for children over 10. You are definitely paying for the treat and not the tricks. Clean and fun for the younger crowd. Bring your own drinks and a lite snack bc concessions are exspensive. Also pay for tickets in advance we stood in line outside for 45 mins and than again for train tickets 30 mins and an additional 65 mins for the actual train ride. All money and wait aside nice time perfect weather awesome event in general. Thankful for be here!!

Christina Nicholson

There aren't very many animals to see. They do have a train you can ride to see some of the animals.

Awful. I’m seriously disgusted by the treatment of animals there. We encountered two animals that were seriously in distress. The bear was seen pacing back and forth, and obviously trying to show signs of pain. It is not normal for that type of behavior. The Reindeer was seen running in circles, panting... WOW! What a great sight for little kids to see, one of Santa’s reindeer having a neurological episode. Other critters such as the snow leopard, the otters, and the lemurs were also all depressed. They all seemed to be sleeping, probably because they’re bored out of their freaking minds. Pittsburgh Zoo and other zoos care for their animals... Oglebay does not! We told the staff and they did absolutely nothing. They claimed it was “normal”, and simply brushed it off their shoulder... Very disappointed with how Oglebay treats their creatures. We will not be returning.

We had the best day at this zoo! We were pleasantly surprised by the animal enclosures, and how close we could enjoy them. We also did the farmyard and lemur encounters. What a memorable experience! We will definitely be back.

elisabeth brian

Very disappointed with this zoo. I understand it is a small zoo but the exhibits/cages that the animals are in are way too small and lack enrichment for the animals who reside there. I left feeling extremely sad for the animals who are forced to live out there days in this facility. Not to mention many of the animals that depend on "packs" or partners do not have any. Sad life for beautiful creatures. The train ride was a total joke as you mainly saw woods. This zoo needs updated and the animals need better homes.

Justin Seibert

The Zoo is a gem for our community, especially given our size. We have taken our three young children there countless times over the years and zoo camps were always a huge hit. We've enjoyed special events like Boo at the Zoo and kids' birthday parties, and, of course, Zoo Brew every June!

Cute little zoo. It only takes an hour or so to walk through. You can pet the miniature donkeys, alpaca and goats and walk through the kangaroos. The only disappointment was that the otters weren't out. I would go here again if in the area.

When my children were little we bought a membership. It was well worth a two hour drive. We just used up a member tickets. So much has changed in just a few years. Very nice zoo. The student volunteers were a little quiet today but they answered questions if we asked.

Brenda Watson

The "zoo" and I use that term loosely, is no longer a zoo; it's a nature walk. No petting area anymore, not many animals at all. The train ride should be included in the admission of $11.95

Great zoo, great price. Our family enjoyed our visit

Lynette Pearson

Been here many times, pricey! But this last time at boo at the zoo very disappointed in a few things!! First when we got there the lady charged my card and realized she under charged me ($1.06)!! So she held up the line to ring me up again then did a void and said it would come off that night , which I knew it wouldn't come off that night because I worked in a bank so I waited and wouldn't you know it, it didn't drop off it hit my account, so I call and the lady couldn't help me and took a note for a lady that could , but hours later no call back so I call and the lady was very rude about the whole situation and pretty much hung up on me! About the zoo itself , it's cute but again pricey for the very few animals you get to see, the train display is very nice.

Had a wonderful time at the Good Zoo. It had some indoor exhibits but mostly outdoor. A lot of different animals and the staff was friendly and knowledgeable and it was reasonably priced to visit, being 50% admissions when we visited this February. Very fun visit while staying at Oglebay

The zoo was alright. We got there just as the outside closed, so didn't get to see to many animals, just a few snakes and the meercat (including the 2 month old baby). It'd probably be fun for little kids, but for adults ... The laser light show wasn't as impressive as I thought it would be, just simple write frame animations to go along with like 4 Christmas songs. The outside light show was equally as unimpressive.

TL:DR The Good Zoo and its staff was really a great experience, I wouldn't go there expecting to see a huge zoo with hundreds of animals (like Atlanta or Washington DC), I would go there looking to see a small group animals with a great staff who loves caring for them. My husband got us three animal encounters at this lovely little zoo for our anniversary. We arrived at the zoo early to walk around and check out the place before our encounter appointments. The zoo is small, we spent a good amount of time in the main building checking out all the reptiles and birds they had. We had about 2 hours before our encounters which was enough to get around and see most of the exhibits. Some the of paths you have to walk to get from exhibit to exhibit are pretty steep so that is something to note. Once it was time for our first 2 encounters we met with Sharon who was super nice and very informative! When you pay for an encounter they drive you over to the animals in a golf cart and tell you all kinds of interesting facts about the zoo on the way. Our first encounter was with the Kangaroos and Wallabies. Sharon told us TONS of info about them as well as fun stories. The second encounter was Red Panda's, these little guys where very shy are first but they give the animals and you enough time to warm up and come out to play. Our last encounter was actually scheduled for the next day and we met with Dr. Joe, who we found out was actually the Zoo Director. You could tell from the get-go that he is 100% into his job and there for the zoo and the animals. He was so amazing about answering any questions about anything. We were there to see the Serval that day and it went great! Dr. Joe also took us around to see the vet hospital and the snow leopard, which hadn't been there the day before since this was its first day on exhibit.

Small zoo, but it was a good experience. Doesn't take too much time to go around, and there are a good variety of animals for how small it is. Would be great for younger kids who can't handle being at a zoo for hours.

I used to come here alot when I was a kid I haven't been to this zoo in probably 15 years and when I went today I was heartbroken.the animals lack space and enrichment. Let alone a companion. It was heart wrenching to see the cerval cat in nothing more then a glorified dog kennel. All the reindeer did was walk in a circle in his stable. And he was missing fur from his hindquarters. The train ride was a joke. I swear they have the same trains from when I was little. The cheetahs were bored as was the snow leopard. Ugh it just sickens me. And as for the train room that I was sooo excited to see it's non-existent now. This zoo really needs to go and the animals placed in a better equipped zoo.

We was having an ok time till we were getting ready to leave. It was 20 minutes till closing and we was heading to the gift shop. My children were excited to go purchase something like we always let them do at zoos. When my daughter went to open the gift shop door we found it was close. The older lady working inside made eye contact with us and just looked at us while we stood there waiting to see if she was going to let us in. She didn't. It ruined my kids day. It was bad enough that we had to pay $40 to see 10 animals but then the one thing my children was looking forward to was closed early for no reason. We will be more than happy to take our money elsewhere.

Absolutely an amazing zoo. I love going all the time. The animal encounters are worth it. The barn animals rule. I love indoor exhibits a lot. Some really awesome animals in the indoor exhibits. Skittles the scarlet macaw rules. I love that they have Victorian crowned pigeons. The staff is very helpful. Princess the Reindeer is a gem. The train ride is relaxing and the different species of turtles is worth it alone. The Aviary is incredible. I have nothing but good things to say about this zoo.

If I could leave NO stars I would. This place is such a sad joke..none of the animals/birds/reptiles etc.had good or water & all looked miserable w/hardly any movement. Overpriced, gift shop was nice & bathrooms clean...train ride not 2 great either, saw 1 zebra, a pacing skinny cheetah, couple ostrich & emu. O & a deer in the woods lol. Concessation stand staff very poor attitude. Definitely a HUGE disappointment 4 our daughters 1st zoo trip :( Actually the outdoor conditions were so stinking & rancid. THIS PLACE NEEDS INVESTIGATED, ANIMALS CONFISACATED & TAKEN 2 VET & SHUT DOWN UNTIL IT CAN BE A HAPPY, HEALTHY PLACE! So depressing & heartbreaking

Was a great trip. I have been there many times. I am going again in few weeks. I love the animals and all the information you can learn about the them. The staff is very polite. The bird sanctuary was an amazing experience. I had three or four just land on me and sit there. One in particular found my hair and my ears very fun to lightly pull on. It was great trip it may be small zoo but I'm thankful it's here for my kids and others to visit.

We did an animal encounter with the red pandas. It was absolutely worth the money and I would recommend it. The zoo itself is on the small side, but each animal has lots of space and they seem to be more willing to come up close to the glass, etc. than in larger, more crowded zoos.

Just the right amount of zoo for taking younger kids - we had 3 under 7 years old. The staff and volunteers are friendly and knowledgeable. A lot of the exhibits let you walk among the animals where it's safe. Larger zoos usually don't allow this. Lots of opportunity to pet animals. A couple of the animals looked older, but you don't get a sense that they aren't taken care of. You could spend the day here if you wanted but a half day is about right with young kids. The model train exhibit was a bonus that the kids loved (pic).

Okay, I wasn't expecting Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium quality when I went here. Honestly, I probably could do a better job by capturing wild animals & putting fences up in my backyard. Don't get me wrong the indoor zoo & train are pretty cool. Once you step outside, that's another story. I was not provided with a map of the zoo & there are few signs that let you know where you are. I felt like I was just wandering around not knowing what I might bump into. I left feeling as though I missed something & I was correct. I didn't see the zebras, etc... I didn't see any water for most of the animals and it was almost 90 degrees. Poor Amelia, the eagle with the broken wing, broke my heart. She seemed so depressed. The only part of the zoo I liked was the barn. The cow & donkeys were pretty cool and interacted with me. All of the other animals wanted to get the heck out of there & pretty much ignored me. It felt like an abandoned zoo (outdoors). I didn't see any zookeepers, staff, etc... outside. The concession stands were closed. As mentioned, it was 90 degrees, it would've been nice to purchase a bottle of water. The animal to space ratio is off. Maybe cut the zoo in half (for the amount of animals there) & put in a merry go round, etc... for the kids. I give this zoo 2.5 stars because the indoor portion was small but worth going there for. I cannot give .5 stars so I am making it a 2. The outdoor zoo gets 0 stars. Does anyone even work outdoors? Even the greenery is unkept. Plant some flowers, cut the grass, pull the weeds, etc.... The hillside of the housing projects I grew up in are better kept than the outdoor zoo.

Ryan Goehring

We participated in an animal encounter, and it was an amazing experience!! Kala was an excellent guide for our encounter with the baby two-toed sloth and the red pandas. Mindi was great also, as our guide for the river otters. Being able to feed and interact with the animals was a unique adventure, and I highly recommend it! The zoo itself is designed well, with a variety of species to view.

For those people that complain it's small compared to big city zoos - that's not really a fair comparison. Oglebay is a city park, not state funded..and Wheeling is a small city/small metro. Wheeling is one of the only cities in the country with under 100k population, to have something like Oglebay and the zoo. Most cities would loooove to have something like Oglebay. I have been going to this zoo since I was a little kid and it always brings back a flood of memories, school trips, Boo at the Zoo, dates, etc. One thing to note is I believe they tore down the big model train display. They are going to use that room for more animals.

Big disappointment in 2017. Train ride was a complete waste of money. Waited in line for an hour for nothing. No decorations or anything. Treats downsized but prices went up. We look forward to this every year, coming from PA for my son's birthday. Probably won't be back next year

5⭐ for the red panda encounter. What an amazing experience, and Amanda was awesome!! Definitely worth the price. The zoo itself wasn't great. It's big enough but the animals don't seem to have a lot of room. I couldn't find a map so weren't sure if we saw everything. If taking small children, be aware that the walking paths are steep in places. I'd imagine lugging a stroller or wagon up and down would be challenging. The indoor zoo was nice though.
