This Zoo corresponds to the category of Nature preserve.
We enjoyed our visit to Squam Lakes Nature Center. The exhibits were informative and animals were out and about. Nice clear trails to walk. The kids interactive play area and barn was impressive. The gift shop was a bonus-with many books and misc items to purchase. We were interested in the lake cruise but unfortunately it was not available due to school groups on the day of our visit. Keep up the good work for New Hampshire nature!
I was so impressed with the center! The staff does such a great job making the experience amazing for my family! We enjoyed the Bird show and my kids could not stop talking about how the bird flew over them! Cant wait to go back soon!
This is superb for children. A top choice and it just keeps getting better. The current dinosaur exhibit is just one example. Where else can you bring the family to see a mountain lion, bobcat, fox, bear in a relatively natural environment? For a respite, there are indoor exhibits and an outdoor play area. No restaurant, just a very simple snack bar, so consider packing a picnic lunch. There are lots of picnic tables. Great place for kids!!
Lots of great things to look at and explore. Very well maintained and planned out. Paths are easy traverse with a stroller. Bring a picnic lunch! My only real complaint is its pretty pricey. $20 per adult, $15 for kids over two. Might not be totally worth the price...
If you're looking for a place where you can have fun, learn, enjoy nature as an adult or a child, Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is a great place to be! You can also experience Squam Lake by taking one of their cruises. This is a must-do! If you're in the lakes region of NH and you are able to make it here, be sure to go. You will have a great time.
Such nice paths and people are so nice there and the animals are beautiful!
We visited a few years ago but it was blazing hot with high humidity :-( Despite that, we were very impressed and always planned to return at a future point when the weather was more agreeable! The animals were well-cared for, the staff was friendly and knowledgeable and the trails/exhibits were wonderful. We couldn't even explore it all because it was too hot for us! So happy to say that we are vacationing in NH next week and cannot wait to return as the weather looks more reasonable for outdoor adventures!
Wonderful interactive displays and grounds to explore the science of our natural world.
Loved my visit here. Animals are well cared for, great old school exhibits. So many extra areas and playgrounds for kids. Nice shady walk and lots of extras to do in the area.
Great place for families and kids. Fun, hands-on exhibits and live animals kept the kids attention.
Took the lake boat tour and our guide was very informative. We learned the history of the lake and residents. Lots of local history and got to see some of the wildlife. They even had blankets for those of us that got cold. This was a wonderful way to see the lake. Laurie was a wonderful tour guide.
We love it there, my grandkids had a great time, it's an adventure for the whole family.
I just love this place! It is slightly off the beaten path but easy to locate. Plan on spending a couple of hours here to learn about the local wildlife habits , habitat, and food. And , best of all, meet that local wild life in its natural setting.! This business is part of the membership chain of regional zoos and science museums so honors your membership to others around the country for free admission or reduced cost admission to here. I would plan on at least 2-3 hours here although it could be covered (without small children in a bit over an hour). Walk ways are generally paved and handicapped accessible as are the buildings that are dedicated to species or habitat education.
Great place to visit and learn about animals
Staff were Awesome and the Loon Cruise was so Fun & Educational!! DINOSAUR Presentation was Pretty Cool!
This little zoo of the local animals is just as great as ever, the five dinosaur animatronics that are there through the summer are a nice bonus though. The kids love seeing the animals, but most of all they enjoy the playground section in the middle. Sometimes they have out an animal or two, when we went it was an owl, for the visitors to see up close. Also it is a blue star museum which is a bonus.
Great time, perfect for kids
wonderful experience. We did Squam lake cruise and nature trail. You learn so much about New Hampshire wildlife. The friendly staff is doimg a great job.
I love going here, it's fun no matter how young or old you are.
Such an awesome educational place to visit out in nature with an amazing boat lake tour available. *make sure to book boat trips ahead of your visit online* boat tours sell out fast. Plenty of free parking, and area to picnic.
My daughters had so much fun. I remember going as a kid. Very educational but entertaining as well. They can't wait to go back.
Admission is so cheap and this place is always well worth it! ALWAYS a fun day when we go to the Science Center! Pack a lunch and have a picnic!
My cousin was able to reserve a cart to drive to see different types of animals and watch a show talking about different types of animals. The first show was about a skunks. Later on the show was about Pellegrini's hawks.
Great enclosures for the animals with water features and lots of shade! And for taking pictures, no cage lines in my pictures because they use thick glass for viewing. Animals looked very healthy especially the lion she was fat :) Loved the walking trails too. It was just lots of fun and we will be back when its not so hot!
This nature preserve is one or the most important places in the State, or the country. Inventive, entertaining exhibits are sprinkled liberally in between live wild animals (all rescues that would otherwise die or fair poorly). Plenty of playground installations for the Rugrats to wear themselves out on. Every parent who can must take their children as often as possible so that the messages about nature and the environment have a chance to get across and be heard and understood. There are dozens of nature and wildlife live presentations every week. This is truly a national treasure.
We went there on a weekday when it was not very busy, plenty of wild animals to see in nice habitats. We did not see any shows, and arrived too late to enjoy a pontoon boat ride that is not included in the entrance fee. There were not alot of people the day we went and the area was very clean. Easy walk to a local restaurant for a good sit down meal.
Great for families with young and small children.
Great for families of young kids. Season pass is a great value if you’re frequently in the area.
Amazing way to learn and be amazed with wildlife and very kid friends has a interactive play ground and told can learn while playing there
It's definitely more interesting for 5-9 age group, my 12 year old wasn't as happy, but it was amazing to see the Mountain Lion and the owls.
Very nice place, clean and informative. Different from other places - lots for kids to learn hands on. I was a little apprehensive due to the cost and not many animals but felt like it was worth every penny. I would recommend packing a lunch and taking advantage of the trails - make a full day out of it.
This place is a GEM. Has a wonderful ambiance.
Awesome natural showcase of native NH animals.
So much fun, come see all the wild life NH has to offer
Always a great time, my kids love it
The animal exhibits and trails are amazing!!!! Decently priced too... Great way to get closer to nature!
This place was awesome my 3 year old son loved it we were planning on spending an hour or two here but were here almost 4 hours because of all the amazing activities and everything to see.
Love it they just put in cool dinosaurs too
Our whole family loves the place! Nice walk, a lot of interesting and interactive information. We love seeing the animals up close
What a great way to spend the day and absolutely great for children. The animals are all native to New Hampshire.
Great place for kids and adults
Great place to bring kids to learn about science and animals.
Great place to take the kids. Many animals and activities for the kids. They loved it!
Great place to see and learn about NH animals. It was a bit buggy so pack bug spray
Great place for adults and families. Highly recommended.!
This is by far one the best not so hidden gems of Central New Hampshire! While it functions similarly to a zoo the goal of the facility is to rehabilitate and care for local animals found in the white mountains of NH. The animals who stay are there for medical or other legitimate reasons that keep them from living in the wild and are given wonderful care. The staff that works there is knowledgable and kind, eager to answer any questions about the animals you may have. The path to see all the animals is fun and equivalent to many easy day hikes with spots to picnic, and a wonderful play/learning area for the young and young at heart. It is a place my family loves to visit time and time again, never getting board of the wonderful animals, new things to learn, and great day that always ensues.
Fun place to see all types of Animals. There's a lot of hands on areas mainly for kids but Adults are sure to have fun as well.
Favorite place to go with the kids! We get a membership every year and it’s extremely worth it!!! Love all the animals and play areas for kids, let’s them be independent enough that moms and dads still feel good about it. I remember going here as a child and I am so thankful my kids get to as well! The trail takes about an hour ish or more depending on how long you spend at each exhibit. The dinosaurs that they have short term are some of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. Over all: go here, is amazing!
This place is beautiful. Wonderful place to bring your kids to learn about NH wildlife. The trail is stroller friendly and not too long. All the animal habitats are well kept and lots of facts and information about the animals along the trail. There is also a playground for the kids to play on and picnic tables to eat at. They dont offer food here but easy to pack a lunch. We will definitely be back!
Very nice area for walking. Lots of hands on activities to increase knowledge. There is a small picnic area towards the beginning of you wanted to bring some food to eat. There is also a small cafe, if you didn't bring your own food.
Lots of wildlife to see and many exhibits for children of all ages to interact with. A great (and fun) "learning" center. There was a fantastic Dinosaur exhibit while we were there, and I hope you get to see it. We had a wonderful day's outing here!
Lots to see, nice trails easy enough for a toddler to walk and explore. There is even a playground for kids. There is a picnic area just inside with plenty of tables and a place to buy snacks if you didn't pack your own.
A bit pricey but some of cost goes to helping conservation. Takes about 1-2 hrs to walk through it all.
Very nice Discover Squam Cruise. 90 minutes on a relaxing tour of Squam Lake.
Great science center. Plenty for the kids for the kids to learn, and the play area offered the perfect spot for a break for kids to blow off some energy. The trails are not stroller friendly, and the rest rooms are clean, and basic in offering the standard pull down changing table. Its not hard to get to, though it is about an hour and half from the Mass border. Worth the drive up.
Really neat special place. Workers walk around with owls, and are very eager to answer questions about the wildlife.
My children love going on field trips here.
Great place to visit with kids of all ages! Everything is very hands on, there's so much to see and do, all in the peaceful serenity of the great outdoors that boast what New Hampshire has to offer.
My Husband and I stopped here on the way home from visiting Mt. Washington, and we were pleasantly surprised! It was very clean and well maintained, and there were a lot of healthy active animals. We did the live animal exhibit trail...I’m pregnant and wanted something nice and easy. We took our time and it took about 2 hours (if you have kids, there’s so much to do with them, like a playground and picnic area). There were many benches, most of it was in the shade, no big hills, and it was very stroller friendly and handicap accessible. It was so educational, and lots of care and thought went into all of the exhibits, great for kids and adults! Can’t wait to take the baby back here in a few years!
Lots of animals to see and a good long hike on the site
This is always a nice place to visit. Its a nice hike in the woods to visit all the exhibits. My daughter loves the barn with the play exhibits and there's not a ton of gift shops strewn about to waste your money in.
That place is awesome. Great for kids. Lots of animals to see, plenty of play areas for all ages and it's educational. I highly recommend it. Plus the walk is nice.
Great place for kids and grown-ups alike!
Expensive. Pretty much new england wildlife. At $20 a person for adults it was not quite worth the money. Its still neat seeing the likes of Bobcats, grey foxes, red foxes, whitetail deer, and bears. The rest is kinda meh.
Amazing place, with a lot of interesting things and executions, mine 5 and 7 years enjoyed it as well we.
Amazing my daughter had a blast only thing i wasnt impressed with is all of the windows to see into enclosures were really dirty and my child kept trying to put her face on the window because she is little and dont understand the finger prints and dirty stuff are germs but besides that great staff great prices we had a blast
Well maintained nature preserve. All animals looked well cared for, all exhibits worked with no missing pieces. Highly recommend.
Wonderful place to spend the day
Well maintained nature center. Animals in good health. Only bad thing, still fenced in.
Nice place to relax and enjoy some nature. Bring bug spray, the mosquitoes there are brutal. They do a nice job and the staff enjoys caring for the animals. Not a huge place but definitely interesting.
Great to see nh's animals in natural great interactive learning for littles
Incredible place! We had an amazing time and are planning to return. There is so much to do and see! Fantastic place for the whole family.
Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is a wonderful place for kids and adults alike. The animals are amazing and they are all rehabilitated from either injuries or abandonment at a young age. The atmosphere of this place is great and I highly recommend going and becoming a member to support all of their community efforts and animals!
Wide variety of activities and the animals were well taken care of with plenty of space!
Great experience. It's a nice walk thru the woods with a wide variety of animals and exhibits. The Squam Lake Discovery cruise was terrific- highly recommend! Overall, we had a great time!
Beautiful location, helpful guides, lots of educational materials. Definitely could have spent more time there
A great place to take the family, and learn about local wildlife.
Wonderful place...great area for seeing migrating birds
If you love animals true to NH, if you love short walks, love gardens, love shopping this is a must visit for you. There are exhibits for every age. This is a wonderful place to go for walks. There are a few hiking trails. Options are available along your adventure. We love the huge playground, some days we venture to the local artist store and gardens but walking through is our favorite no matter how many times we have been. Enjoy
Went with my 3 years old son and family. He was entertained and the rest of the family enjoyed seeing all of the animals.
We stopped by here on the suggestion of 2 NH natives as a place our 10 year old grandson would enjoy. Well to use "enjoy" would be an understatement, if I were to describe my grandson's experience. There are so many different exhibits, each inviting and engaging young and old minds alike. The animal habitats are brilliant in design. We watched a presentation on the porcupine that had my techno-geek grandson filling up the Q & A session with his curiosity gone wild. The whole staff is very knowledgeable, professional, and polite. The trail and exhibits are clean and well kept. The whole experience was great for our grandson and myself as well.
Such a great place! I wish some of the animals had partners.
Very cool place. Has a huge playground for kids and hiking trails. Can make this an all day event!
The best bit was us watching a garter snake in the wood next to the footpath catching and devouring a frog/toad. The whole process took about 20 minutes and it was fascinating, despite the blood and gore. Thank you, Science Centre.
Family friendly atmosphere. Great walking trails and fun interactive areas. Good for all ages.
Went here with my daughters and it was awesome. I could not believe I had not been there before the animals are beautiful and well cared for.
Lots of fun and educational. Have gone here more times than I can count.
Had a fun visit there with my kids. We saw a presentation with a live porcupine which was cool. The presenter was very engaging. We spent about two hours total, just drifting around the main loop looking at everything there. The mountain lion and bobcat were pretty neat to see.
I've been coming here with my son since he was a toddler. He's now 9 years old & still enjoys a visit. Every year there is something new to discover. My 1st grade nephew also had a blast.
This place has expanded quite a bit since I was a kid, while keeping the essentials that made it memorable. Three generations of my family had a great time there last weekend.
Second time visiting. We really enjoyed seeing all the animals, learning about their life and walking around outside. Sometimes it's best to wait a minute and let the larger groups go pass
this is a great place. very educational for a wide range of ages as well as fun. i went as a kid and loved it and this year i was able to bring my toddler this year at least to see the animals and she loved it too.
Great NH Day for Familia!! There's many added Attractions for the kiddos and always interesting things for Adults Aswell
Like walking in a zoo with almost no animals...mainly pictures and explanations. Good maybe for elementary school kids - doesn't worth the effort and cost for a family. We were expecting more nature and animals walking around and not just exhibitions. The plastic Dinosaurs were... well maybe something exciting for 5YO kids... Place was clean and people were nice. A lot of mosquitoes in the forest side. We just wanted to go away.
Great place, love all the exhibits and the animals, the staff is great as well. Always a fun time. Going on a weekday closer to late afternoon helps avoid most of the chaos of field trips.
Beautiful and calming and fun for all ages
Learned so much about all the different animals and their habitat.
Beautiful place, was disappointed there wasnt a moose, however the grounds are immaculate of feces.
Great place for a walk on the woods with the kids. Great educational opportunities about your own backyard
Such a great experience for all ages
Great place, great for birds of prey. Great place to take kids, very interactive for them. They even have a great play ground.
amazing place, as good or better than most science or even just kids museums in new england!
What a wonderful experience seeing animals in their habitats! Very knowledgeable staff! Loved the interaction!
Love it! So much to do. Great value. Educational, and fun for all ages.
Very well presented exhibit on the wildlife of New Hampshire. Coming from the UK, we had some concerns about the moral question of keeping wild animals in cages. This was set against the very obvious great condition of the animals on display and the effort taken to educate on the natural world - a video or even holograph would not have the same impact. The reason we give it only 4 stars is that not enough effort is made to explain why the animals, particularly the large animals, are kept in relatively small enclosures. Looking at the negative reviews that focus on the moral question, your responses are very encouraging. Perhaps you should cut out the middleman and make more effort at the Centre to explain why the animals are maintained in captivity from a conservation perspective.
It is a great place to stroll through nature and learn about the animals. Enjoyable for adults and children. Definitely recommend to all.
Great place to take the family
What a great place to visit for all ages
Very cool, conservation focused
The best local place for children. Loved the dinosaur live exhibit.
Small enclosure for cougar but otherwise great!
Great place to spend the day with or without kids
Had the best time, lots of great hands on for the kiddos. Learned a lot and it was awesome to see the smiles on the little ones face. Decent prices as well.
I love this place! We try to visit once a year when we are in NH camping. Great staff, amazing activities for the kids, it truly is a wonderful jewel.
I was very impressed
Always a great day seeing all the wildlife. And now the 5 animatronic dinosaurs!!! So cool
This was way more than I was expecting. My kids are 2 and 4 and I expected to find a lot geared toward older kids. There was plenty of that, but also plenty to keep mine entertained. And there it's a Mountain Lion!
Beautiful trails to hike, wonderful natural habitats for the animals! Love to spend time there; it's always so peaceful. Love the Howling Coyote gift shop, too!
Great price through discount programs, and really fun interactive ways to learn about local wildlife.
Great way to preserve affected animals while educating the public.
I've loved going here since I was a kid. It's a beautiful place with great animals. We had a blast looking for turtles and frogs on the marsh walk :)
Just an amazing place with regional animals to learn about.
The children did enjoy all the attractions but we think it is too expensive for the value back. Too few live animals.
Great place. Amazing new dinosaur exhibit and very fun playground.
Amazing place to go. Daughter loves it and so do I. Highly recommend getting the season pass, saves you money in the long run if you plan on going frequently
Nothing like hearing jackhammers to relax to sounds of nature
Went here as part of a weekend getaway. Small place for the price, BUT the money helps the conservation efforts so it's very worthwhile. The lake tour is awesome too as long as you don't mind a little spray.
This is a very pricey cross between a zoo and a nature trail. The science center features several exhibits relating to the animals in the area. It also has exhibits relating to conservation etc. They offer animal shows, demonstrating live animals several times a day, and feedings three days a week, so check the schedule to see if your favorite is on display. In addition to the move animal exhibits the center features several walking trails offering an opportunity to see local wildlife and plant life. Most tree species are marked for easy identification of the local foliage. There is also a ninety minute boat tour of squam lake available for an additional fee.
This is such a cute place to bring the kids. We had such a great time! I would definitely go back!
Great small zoo / science center with wildlife that's native to New Hampshire. Great place to visit with kids as well.
Great place for the kids to learn about their own habitat (New Hampshire!) The staff is incredibly nice and full of information. The animals are loved and I was shocked by how many they have.
Great experience, nice dinosaurs
Beautiful and educational! Love it here and will be back.
Great educational facility. Fun and educational for all ages. Very much enjoyed the sub-canopy boardwalk peppered with stations featuring different animals and ecosystems of the surrounding area. There are educational presentations with live animals as well as an otter exhibit. A few times a week, the otters are fed a "fishsicle" and it is amusing to watch them try and get their snacks. Didn't visit gift shop or go for a cruise. That's the great thing about this place, one can come back again and again and have a different experience. Locals or regular visitors to the region can purchase a membership and come and go. There is a nice picnic area and food during the summer season. It was not busy the day we visited, but I could see it being a lot busier. Educational, interesting AND shady.
Animal park was fun, learned a lot about loons on the boat tour!
Beautiful place to see nature.
Great place. Especially for kids, very informative and had a amazing play ground
The walking trails are well shaded and plenty wide. Volunteers were available to answer some questions about the animals. Plenty of things to keep the little ones interested in climbing or participating in a fun game while older ones and adults are enjoying live animals and exhibits.
Brand new Blue Heron School at the Squam Lake Science Center.
Nice relaxing walk
Both new and old exhibits are fresh and informative.
My kids love this place with a passion that is almost unrivalled!
Great place for kids.
Amazing!!! The animal exhibits were clean and well thought out. The mountain lions were my favorite.
We go here once a year and always love it. My son has been going since he was 2 and gets something out of it every year. It's a great little home and we love to learn about the animals.
All the animals are from that area which is cool! Also they all were either abandoned as babies or hurt to where they can't be released. All the enclosures were natural and decent size for the 1-2 animals in there. It is a beautiful nature walk with shade from the trees the whole way, also very educational through out the entire walk.
Great place to take the kids!
Nice park, but the animals are way too skinny.
We had a lot of fun. This is great for kids. Lots to learn about plants animals in the white mountains. lots of educational exhibits. Live animals including Bear coyotes deer fox owl etc.. Awesome playground and indoor play area with multiple levels and a spiraling staircase.
Amazing animals and birds in their natural habitat.
Something to do in every season for everyone who has an interest in Wildlife and Nature. We've been to the Raptor Spectacular day in September and the Winter Walk in January. Both were excellent value for money.
Such a beautiful place. Awesome for all ages - great place for learning, exercise, and fun. Variety of animals, plants, and things to do! Love coming here.
A had a great time as did my 4 year old son. The dinosaur exhibit was awesome and I really emitted the walkthrough set up in a somewhat very natural setting. I'm normally not a big fan of caged wild animals but the broad variety of local wildlife they do have on exhibit were all injured in some way, shape, or form and wouldn't have survived had they not been rescued and prob wouldn't have survived had they been released back into the wild... So that was actual a small sigh of relief.
Beyond expectations! We had at least as much fun as our grandkids!
We LOVED this place! So much to explore, and creatures to see, and information to learn. We enjoyed the Chipmunks scurrying around the park and learning about them and seeing all the animals in beautifully constructed habitats. It seems a little pricey, but we easily spent four hours here on a quiet Monday. So much interaction and play.
Always love spending time here when in New Hampshire. Great for a couple of hours with two small kids. Plenty to keep the little ones occupied. Great playground an indoor play area too!
I love visiting the otters and other wildlife at the Science Center.
amazing place, animals are well taken care of and has lots of interactive exhibits, has educational wildlife presentations with care takers, lots of fun for young and old!
