This is a must visit in Ken County!!! The place is in the middle of nowhere, the species are amazing, the love they have for the animals and rescues is admirable! We visited the place because they rescued a couple blue jay nestlings we brought to them that our cat got from their nest and almost died, they answered our messages right away and took the little guys and got them back to life! We decided to stop by and see the place and we really enjoyed it. We love nature and animals and was so refreshing to see the good work this place does for the animals and how they continue to rehabilitate and home so many with just donations... please visit this place and enjoy a day with them, this place rocks!
I love CALM for what they do for the wildlife in need. They’ve expanded slightly over the years and I love them even more each year I visit. They really care for the animals and it’s such a great family fun place to visit
I went with my son and his school on a trip here. It is a small zoo with plenty to see. I believe all of the students had a great time
Wonderful experience for our two young granddaughters, as well as my daughter and me.
I love coming here with my family. There's playground, feeding zoo, and train ride on weekends! It may be small, but this place has lots to offer! On slow days, the zookeepers will be out on the sidewalk with owl or small hawk or some birds that's friendly for close encounters, but you can't touch them. It's kind of cool to get close to animals tho! I think, if you were to come here with your one big family, this place has something for everyone and no one would be bored, I'm sure of it.
I love this place, working as a rescue i come across a vast number of different types of animals and they are always a help with getting them in and healed, donate to your local rescues it does make a difference
I decided to visit CALM one afternoon when my family was busy doing other stuff. It was so serene in the winter sunlight. I was worried there wouldn’t be many animals out but I was wrong. They must have liked the winter sunshine too.
I would, very much recomend this museum (Zoo) to anyone adult and children any day or night. When they do their Christmas lights it is AMAZING. A must see.
Kuds, friends, & all Had a wonderful time. Healthy active animals. Very friendly, informative Staff. Thank you. Great summer fun
A great place for the kid and to learn about local wildlife.
My daughter and I had a blast at Calm Zoo. Her little friend had fun too. It is very kid friendly.
Lackluster and not much to see.. not to mention the inside buildings had a horrendous smell
Rescue animals in great habitats
First time here and my Husband and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Beautiful plants, trees and creeks! Exhibits are impressive! Worth the money and worth the drive from Fresno, California.
Great family place.. children love it, playground and tons of activities for kids including a playground, fun for adults as well
We've been going to Calm for years and love it! It continually grows throughout the years. Great place for families and very educational.
The lights at calm has become our annual family event. Each year the kids enjoy the lights.. train ride and hot chocolate
Awesome place to visit love to see all the animals and I love to see the owls we go there every Christmas to see the Christmas lights
Small zoo with train ride. But nice for the kids. We went for the holiday lights. It was pretty impressive.
I love the roadrunner... and there THREE pumas!
Don’t miss a visit to C.A.L.M., Bakersfield’s pristine collection of native plants and animals indigenous to our area. Knowledgeable staff and dedicated volunteers help people of all ages get the most out of this outdoor experience. Hope you get to watch a docent feed the snakes or see one of the docents walk around with an owl on her arm.
Love this location!! Everyone is so friendly and efficient every time we visit. Food is always amazing, love the menu and all there is too choose from. The atmosphere is very cozy, love there new look. This is 100% out most favourite place to dine out!! Thanks Kelsey’s Midland for the great hospitality, look forward to our next visit. There was nobody there and the park was all to ourselves. A great way to spend a few hours with the kids
Came for Holiday Light show and it was very impressive. I would recommend dressing warm, because the cold in this area is unforgivable. All in all it was an enjoyable experience.
The kids love this place
Great place to go for a walk and check out some animals. Good price. They only sell snacks and drinks. So pack a sandwich if you plan to stay long.
The family & I love CALM. So many amazing animal that you can view. An there is always a docent on the ground with an animal to share information about. I love the picnic area so your a letter to wind down with your family & eat. There is even a play area to for the kids.to get the wiggle worms out. Gift shop is a bit pricey, but most are.
It's a great place. The staff are good. And it's not to big.
Family night at Calm for the Christmas lights. We all loved the lights and train ride, kettle corn and hot chocolate and all the different animals that we could see. Only because it was dark and some were hiding in their houses. The kids really enjoyed it and we got to see Santa and take pictures with him. KCSOS had an awesome VIP set up with popcorn, face painting, cookies, hot cocoa and a place for kids to write their Dear Santa, letter. So much fun. Highly recommend CALM during Christmas season and during regular business hours.
My grandchildren had their birthday celebrations here. Nice shaded area to eat at and all the guests enjoyed seeing all the animals, especially the sea horses. Will be returning for the holiday lights this December; a Wonderful and beautiful family event. Great job C.AALM STAFF!
CALM has totally stepped up their game! Love all of the animals and exhibits! From bears to owls, roadrunner and possums, to mountain lions and a whole lot more! Reasonable priced admission and a great afternoon adventure for a family with little ones!
Awesome nice to have a little spot to see some animals
We went tonight to the Christmas lights while the lines where long its expected on a weekend, we got there at 5pm they didn't open until 530pm, but they didn't open the gate until 550pm.. BUT that's not the complaint... THESE IDIOTS blocked our truck and 20+ other vehicles in with cars and trucks in front and in back of our entire row.!! And to top it of the office manager didn't compensate us for squat and we had a tired baby crying in the cold.... hire people with common sense. The young men parking people where we parked seemed on drugs.
We try to get out to CALM at least once a year. Really nice place and very well maintained with an interesting variety of local animals. You can comfortably see the whole place in less then two hours. Staff is very good.
Great place to take the kids. The zoo size is great for smaller children. Always something to see
Clean restrooms. Beautiful trees. Nice train ride.
This is a great zoo for the price. It's not huge but it covers a lot of space, so it's a lovely stroll by yourself or with the kiddos. It takes 1-2 hours to walk through. The drive out is beautiful. Rolling hills and mountain views. Free parking. You aren't going to find elephants or zebras here because they only have native animals. They have several areas where you can touch the animals. Including a farm animal area (with goats and rabbits and a pig) and an underwater area (with sea cucumbers and sea anemones). There is also a picnic area with a park. Great spot to have lunch and let the little ones run around. There is also an kids train on the weekend that rides around an area of the park. I haven't done it, but its $1 a ride. Seems fun. I can't give it 5 stars because I have been there 4 times now, and my there are always a lot of exhibits that are closed. Not so many that I would ask for a refund or that I would have stayed home or anything, but guess it would just be nice to know the list of closed exhibits before hand.
An amazing museum with many sights and sounds of California's native life and filled with many species of flora. The many years have helped improve and make the museum truly wonderful.
It's an okay zoo an the animals looked well cared for. I'd say the enclosures are very small though. When we were there most of the animals were sleeping or inside. Probably because of the cold weather. Not the zoo's fault of course. My favourite was the roadrunner. First time I saw one. Also liked the bears. In conclusion if it's on your way and you have 10 dollars to spare one could stop by to see a bear or mountain lion up close. Cheers to the keepers.
Very nice views and enjoyable animals.
Very nice venue. Easy to navigate and the staff/Volunteer were very enthusiastic and helpful. An excellent opportunity for volunteers young and older. Will definitely go again.
Had a great experience at C.A.L.M. today!! Saw all the animals up close and personal and got some great photos! Some of the animals were hiding at first, because so many children were there for field trips. But after about 12:30 in the afternoon when the parked calmed down and the buses left all the animals were loving the cold weather and roaming around! Got some great photos, especially of the mountain lions, bears, and the bobcat:) One zoo keeper was especially awesome today! I didn’t get his name but he brought a Hawk out on his glove and taught all the children about him and his species. And in the reptile house he also brought out a very friendly older gopher snake that all of the children could see up close and even touch! Great day to go to the park! I would recommend coming after 12:30 if possible for your schedule! I love the new ocean exhibit area as well with recently added sea horses, octopus, and touch tank with many ocean creatures! Love our local zoo and especially all go the keepers that make C.A.L.M. zoo as great as it is!
I had an amazing time here with my family. All the animals were out. The mountain lions got really close to us through the glass. The condors started flying when we approached. That was cool! And the indoor Coast room had some incredible type of creatures. Definitely make the time to visit!
It was a very nice place. We went late but got to see all the animals anyway. It was really cool. I'll have to make another trip down here to bring my family with
This is a great place to take young kids. There is plenty of space for them to run around and get some energy out. The animals are interesting and fun to learn about. We went at dusk in August and there was enough shade that it wasn't even hot. It was a great evening.
I went on a small road trip and saw this place. The people are so helpful and nice. I learned alot about the animals.. it was a great place.
Small, nice and cute. You spend about 2-3 hours there. Something quick. It's a good place to take the kids for 1/2 day. I really liked and enjoyed it. Will go back in a year or 2. Lol.
We're just looking for a good way to kill a few hours with the kiddos. Happened to be kids free day and the animals were very active, a few docents weree out talking to visitors, even had a Red-Tail Hawk out. My kids loved it and we will definitely be visiting more often.
I decided to visit CALM one afternoon when my family was busy doing other stuff. It was so serene in the winter sunlight. I was worried there wouldn’t be many animals out but I was wrong. They must have liked the winter sunshine too.
There are a lot of wonderful exhibits. It appears to be well-managed. Two lines we waited in we're not that long. The people here were kind and friendly.
We love CALM, my kiddo is convinced it's "her zoo". We have an annual membership and when the weather is nice, we go weekly and never get tired of seeing the animals! Perfect size for young kids with a great assortment of critters!
So many great memories for me here.
The length of the place is a near perfect match for a child's attention span.
Great place for family to go! There's lots of animals, reptiles, birds and great plce to have a kids or adults birthday party. They also have an extensive gift shop and you can also become a member of CALM and get priority information on upcoming events. They also have a food truck so you can get food snacks and beverages! I enjoyed my visit and plan on returning back to CALM! There are jellyfish at CALM, although they are receiving new tanks and are currently close for jellyfish, and should re-open end of August or in September 2018 sometime.
Excellent place to take the family! We have 4 kids ranging from 15 years to just under a year old and they all had a fantastic time. We visited during their Twilight at CALM event and saw most of the animals. The kids even got a close up look at a barn owl and a king snake. I can't wait to attend future special events at CALM!
Amazing holiday lights experience for all. We have also finally just visited during the day. The exhibits are extremely fun to see and with not as many people at the zoo, the kids got to experience a lot of one on one time with the volunteer docents and workers asking questions. We really enjoyed this trip as well as seeing workers take down the CALM holiday zoo light displays so the children also got to see how much work went into putting on the light show.
My 2 year old grandson really enjoyed seeing all the animals. All exibits were well maintained.
My kids love going here to see the different animals, to ride the train, and to play on the playground. The events they hold throughout the year are also very fun and educational.
My family and I went last night to go see the Christmas lights and we had a lot of fun. Great family atmosphere
We when it was cold so we didn’t see any animals but they had Christmas lights it was beautiful so beautiful also they had hot cocoa and coffees and popcorn it was great place to see Christmas lights
Nice, cute & small. Good place to go spend a few hours with the family. They say its really nice to go to when its all decorated with christmas lights. Haven't gone during Christmas season but I'm looking forward to it.
the place is small but it's good for the kids. needs maintenance, though
Lots of different animals. Really enjoyed the snake exhibit.
Raptor exhibit closed but train running. Great day!
It was a lot of fun. I loved the reptile room.
Fun for children, a lot of walking so wear tennis shoes. The seahorse display was great and the docents were very nice. The petting of the sea life was fun and our Grandchild enjoyed that part. There is a senior discount but you need to ask for it or you will be charged full price.
Beautiful and peaceful.
Nice place to visit strong recommend
It's a great place to visit if you want to be away from the city.
I love coming here with my family. There's playground, feeding zoo, and train ride on weekends! It may be small, but this place has lots to offer! On slow days, the zookeepers will be out on the sidewalk with owl or small hawk or some birds that's friendly for close encounters, but you can't touch them. My kids and I really love this place! It's not as hectic as a zoo and always has fun changing exhibits and animals to see. Lots of space to run and be free for the kids which I like. There's also farm animal area where you can purchase their food and feed them. After we walk through the whole place we like to go to the jungle gym kids play area & let the kids play. There's picnic tables with benches & we like to pack a lunch to eat there. Nice place overall!!
Our family enjoys CALM several times each year. Great place to walk and learn about California indigenous animals and plants. The organization has made consistent improvements over the years.
The calm great.Wild life is amazing :-D
A trip down memory lane for me, the trees have matured nicely and the ground look great! So nice to see the dedication plaque for Wiskers and Sierra at the cat compound. I'll definitely be back now that we've moved back home.
A SMALL PLACE BUT FULL OF SURPRISES AND BEAUTIFUL ANIMALS☺
Great family location we love going here affordable and fun
My two grandsons from Las Vegas came to visited the wife and I here in cali..it was a quiet afternoon and I decided to get everyone out the house and I thought about CALM.I had heard nice thing about it and decided this would be our get out for the afternoon.Upon arrival it was kind of hot outside and we grabbed water to begin they have vending machines and a gift shop for souvenirs. I have to say that it is a nice large spread with a lot of path ways to see different dessert habitats and animals there is also a museum with snakes behind glass enclosures and mural s of old settlers of the area.We really enjoyed our little excursion. There is also a train that runs the full area of the grounds but we went on a day when the train wasn't running.I would happily recommend this sightseeing trip to anyone who love nature.Enjoy
Nice place to visit some animals you wouldn't normally see elsewhere. Lots of kids when we visited. Would definitely recommend visiting.
Grand kids out of school so we decided to go here just to get them out of the house. We used to go every Christmas and look at the lights but haven't the last 2 years because it was either too rainy or cold for the youngest grand kids. Wasn't crowded that day maybe 150 kids, the kids had fun looking at the animals and feeding the ducks. The even enjoyed playing on the playground there that they have.
So nice place to take my grandkids.good for school fold trips.!
It's a wonderful, family friendly zoo. Knowledge staff. Great place for kids' birthdays and picnics. Fun events. I recommend a family yearly pass.
Great family visit. Great displays and helpful staff. The train was very nice. Only negative was slow entry personnel
I love to take my kids here! Plenty of animals to see and things to do. So glad they are around. Membership is definitely worth it too @ $55 for a year!
The volunteers do a fantastic job of keeping the facility clean, the animals well housed and fed. We enjoy the museum several times a year with our grandchildren. It's one of their favorite activities.
Went to see the Christmas lights. Worth every penny. Rode the train and the carousel too...included in the already cheap price. They do children and seniors discounts too.
This is a great spot for locals and visitors alike. An underrated jewel that showcases native Californians fauna (and flora). The holiday lights for Christmas are just amazing. You can also tent spaces for events and birthday parties. You'll never see a mountain lion or a bobcat as close as you can here.
It is really nice. A lot of animals, very spacious, and very affordable! Will definitely be coming back soon!
This is a cool place to go and see the types of wildlife found in California. It's animals are all incapable of being returned to the wild due to injury or disability. The staff is fairly helpful. The prices are reasonable. The parking lot is good.
We go here every year we usually have a great time unfortunately we made the mistake of going on the last week. If you go early and are there at opening you will have a great time. The train is fun and the lights are beautiful when you go towards the end people seem to get rushed and they get rude and pushy. I recommend that if you have young children get there right at opening go straight to the train then get your snacks and after you eat head to the merry-go-round then you can wander around leisurely while everyone else is waiting in the long lines. This schedule will work out perfectly. Guaranteed.
Absolutely amazing little gem. Kidos loved it!
This year was the first year taking my kids to the Holidays Lights at CALM. Loved it! Lights, popcorn with hot cocoa, and a fun little train ride. Loved how little sections were themed.
This is a great little zoo. A perfect stop on a long drive.
It was perfect! The smells, the animals. We really enjoyed it! Very nice for a small zoo
First time and amazing. I feel like I'm out of town.
I have always loved going to CALM. And my last visit was so much fun. My sister reserved a spot at the picnic tables for a small party to celebrate my nephew's birthday, which I never knew CALM did. All these years and seeing the picnic tables every time I went, I had no idea you could have a party there lol. It was so nice to be able to have our party and walk around the museum. And they have so many new exhibits. Mountain lions, coyotes and bears, oh my! Even rock climbing! I can't wait to see how much more this museum will grow in the future.
Totally enjoyed coming here and bringing my little one's. Yes this place is small but very enjoyable. Jut take your time see everything they have in a CALM way.
Great day with cool animals! Great picnic area and fun.
I love visiting here with my daughter. I recommend a yearly membership. It's a great place to take the kids when you need to get out of the house but not spend a ton of money. Also going throughout the year you get to see how the animals change behaviours. Over the summer the added octopus and seahorse tanks in the coastal room next to the park.
It was awesome wish the animals would have been in better conditions but a nice place nob the less
I loved it. Cant wait to go back
My boys just love this place.
This was a great find! I've driven by this place before, but finally decided to have a look. Very cool wildlife exhibits here. They have a great variety indigenous reptiles, and an awesome raptor exhibit, which I find fascinating. They also have a mountain lion exhibit. Don't miss out on this place!
This place gets a 5 star for two reasons: one it's noble cause of rehabilitating hurt or weak animals, and two CALM HOLIDAY LIGHTS! The lights are amazing and it's a great event to go to for some family time. Outside of the Light season, Calm is not exciting and worth driving all the way out to unless they happen to have a rarer animal like a mountain lion or big cat in rehabilitation. Nevertheless I definitely applaud them for their efforts.
My son loves the dinosaurs! We go only for four things: dinosaurs, train, feed the ducks, and Napoleon (in that order)! It's a great place for the children to be single to learn and run around! Great for families with little ones!
Such a wonderful experience. Great place to bring family and friends. Staff is friendly and extremely knowledgable. Can't recommend making this stop enough.
Great displays with info and lots of animals to watch and marvel at God's handiwork.
Wonderful to visit animals at dusk. Much more active. Beautiful CALM!
Nice little Zoo to spend few hours at. We enjoyed the trip!!
Very nice zoo. Although it is smaller than an average size zoo but it's nice and educational for the kids. I wouldn't suggest wearing your best shoes because there's a lot of walking on dirt trails so don't bring heeled shoes or sandals. What I really loved the most about this zoo is their aquarium. They have moon jellyfish and they look really cool.
Great place for a day with kids seeing all of the animals. We had a fantastic birthday party for my son as well.
Took my family and nephews during the Boo at the Zoo. Everyone had so much fun. My oldest nephew thought it was going to be an ordinary zoo with animals he has already seen. CALM has animals that are native to CA. He was excited to see animals that he learned about in school but has never seen in real life.
Great place to take the kids or have a quiet stroll. The holiday lights are great
I love Calm but we discovered that it takes only about 30 minutes to get around but with a toddler it would probably take you a out an hour or so. We would like if there were more exhibits, and more animals that are not birds. Birds are great but we want to see something more.
Great place to bring the kids. Fun little zoo. Well taken care of grounds.
First time here! Nice place to visit for the day. Take your kids!
My whole family and I love this place. It is small but you can learn a lot here
The Christmas lights are great. Amy other time of year is also a good time.
Awesome place to visit if you're coming to see the Christmas lights be sure to always bring a jacket cuz it does get extremely cold great place to visit the kids always love this place
Lots of education about animals and nature. Volunteers and donations always welcomed. Love to come in winter and see the light show. Learn about the nocturnal animals. Then during summer see all the rest. Great gift shop
Our town zoo. Small.. nothing amazing to see. A place to go at at least once. Gift shop is over priced. You can take in food and drinks. They have a picnic and play area.
WONDERFUL PLACE TO GO! I love coming here! I go to CALM on dates, family hang outs and even for school projects! It is such a wonderful environment! Very welcoming and filled with information about the animals! Never to full and a lot of sitting areas to have a little picnic!
Very well thought out, albeit small, wild animal park. I'm glad we stopped here, though many of the animals were sleeping. The staff was awesome and helpful. I don't have good pics on my phone, unfortunately, but the birds were particularly cool. I believe they take in and rehabilitate animals here, which makes them automatically awesome.
Holiday Lights at Calm was fantastic. I enjoyed my time there and would return during the day to see the animals.
I would like to see more animals out animals
Great little zoo for any day get out and walk a bit. It’s along the Kern river corridor so sometimes a not caged skunk might walk by. Love the place, it’s clean and bring a lunch :)
Pretty cool zoo .... kinda small but got a lot inside .... great for all to enjoy
We'll maintained wildlife refuge with a wide variety of different animals. All the creatures were in very nice enclosures and seemed to be in good health. I got to see a badger up close, for the first time. Really beautiful animal!
We love coming to see the Christmas Lights at CALM every year. The displays are beautiful and it's nice to see different and new displays every year.
We stopped here on the way to southern California and are glad we did. This is a great place for little kids and adults. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. We had a great time learning about all the animals there.
CALM is always a hit. A few exhibits were closed which is understandable. Very few people on our Thursday visit.
Had a great time at CALM; very beautiful.
Unfortunately, we didn't get to go through the whole zoo, but what we did see was nice. The layout could be better. Seeing all the different areas required quite a bit of backtracking.
This place is awesome! Also, if you get a membership you can go to lots of other museums and galleries in Bakersfield.
The California Living Museum is a great place to take the kids to let them learn about animals and explore in the trees. It's a good place to go on a date as well. They offer different experiences throughout the year like the holiday lights. They also had free icecream day during the summer. Theres even a train ride for $1. Parking is free. Tickets are reasonable however the annual pass is the way to go.
Small enough to enjoy Well set up. Have great memories in pictures. Love it
Enjoyed seeing all the active animals. The little show they held was very informative and interesting. You can tell a lot of the animals are use to humans.
This is a great place to bring families. You can explore the animal exhibits, and enjoy the many seasonal activities that they offer.
I Love this Place .The animals all have such sweet faces . A great place to take the family. You can plan a picnic and enjoy the beautiful grounds
We've been going almost every year to see the Christmas lights its awesome .staff are friendly and helpful .
We visit every year for Holiday Lights at CALM. Definitely a place you want to take the kiddos or your significant other. Very calming and could be a romantic setting for a cool date night.
Went to see the Christmas lights with the kids, they loved it. They had a carousel and a train, also pictures with Santa. All free, you only pay admission into the zoo. I would have gave it 5 stars but it was very busy and crowded.
Fantastic place. More people needs to know about this place.
Just a nice place. The staff is friendly as we arrived there was a party taking place that was nice to see. Over all experience we all had a good time.
From where I live it's kind of a long drive to do with kids, but it's a good place it has plenty of space to sit and take a snack.
Loads of fun with baby love and her school(:
we went for the Holiday Lights and it was Amazing and affordable for my whole squad! the kiddos loved it! them smiles were priceless
For those who have not been to calm during the day it is a museum of living animals or basically a zoo. But during the holiday season they add an additional display of completely custom illuminations mostly Of Christmas nature pun not intended. In my opinion you honestly have to go to at least both times of winter and summer to get the full experience. Also go any other times of the years and see the animals, great education for the kids. You learn about the different wild animals etc that is in california
Quaint. Not a whole lot of people which made it better. Definitely worth a visit.
The lights are especially scenic around the holidays!
Very informational. Unique and gorgeous views of Bakersfield. Very well tended. Awesome learning experience.
I had a lovely time. It actually was "calm"ing there. A Mule deer fell in love with me and walked right to me.
Great time seeing the light display. Great place to spend time with family. Kids enjoyed kettle corn and hot chocolate, train ride , and reptile house, dancing on the stage and visiting the gift shop at the end.
Wonderful place to bring the kids just check the weather first
Unique location, not your typical "zoo", only California native animals ( most cannot be released back to wild) and plants, easy to access all areas, special events almost every month, staff is friendly and informative, docents very good, costs are small. Would highly recommend to anyone.
Perfect to take the kids out of the house without having to pay a lot .. Get the year memberships also good distraction for adults Christmas Lights season is awesome not forgetting the train which kids will not forget
It was nice...The Christmas lights...I didn't give it 5 stars because it was Sooooo Cold...I don't think it's such a good Ideal to come to a Zoo with so many empty spaces where air can engulf you.. YOU never realize how small the place is until u walk the whole thing and just look at lights....Which were beautiful and perfect for photo opportunities... Driving up there is a bit tricky in the dark...So PLEASE BE CAREFUL...other than that... Definitely worth going
