My girlfriend as I have been trying too find time with our busy schedules to make time for going on a date. I work 6 days a week and she has twin toddler daughters that are a handfull; not to mention how the difficulty we have finding a good sitter for them. Nevertheless, we finally decide on the zoo because it was something we could do and have fun with the girls also. With there hours of operation on Saturday saying they close at 5 it should have worked well fitting into my schedule also. Well we show up and the lady at the admissions booth informs us that they do stay open until 5 but the animals get put up at 4 so we were welcome to pay for entry but we wouldn't be able to enjoy seeing any of the animals though. I just do not see the point of posting that you are open until 5 when u start closing at 4. If that's the case then say you close at 4 so you didn't have customers showing up to only be turned away like that. I'm sure it would have been a blast for the children if that were not the case but I definitely disapprove of the misrepresenration of theirs scheduled hours if operation for the general public.

It is run down in some places and is not big as some of the big zoo's but totally worth the small fee charged. There is also a splash pad and things for the children to get wet. Their animals gave us quite the show as well. Most animals are just sleeping but here we had some cool experiences with a couple of their animals. Can't wait to go again next year.

We went as soon as the gates opened on a Sunday. Not a lot of people. Very quiet and very nice. The zoo is small compared to others but it is clean. The animals were out and playing so it made it enjoyable for the kids. The train ride was nice, short but nice. We will visit again.

Limited by acreage and what appears to be local corporate sponsorship, this zoo really has done a nice job. The grounds and gardens are beautiful, the boat ride is likewise beautiful and truly unique among zoos, really a Louisiana treasure. The splash pad and petting zoo are great recent additions. Yes some of the exhibits need some TLC, but it is a great local spot, and I wonder why there is not more corporate sponsorship from Century Link, St. Francis, etc.

I can not wait for the train to be up and running.the boat ride is worth the trip alone. Love the cat house.they have added more apes. They have added more animals. Wish they had more but my children loved it and it was cheap. They have added a splash pad for the summer.

It was the saddest zoo i have ever been too, the animals where soo depressed and bored…they should probably give those animals too a zoo that can really take GOOD care of them…the exhibits didn’t even match the animal they we’re housing, like how can 3 animals be in the same exhibit in small cages that they could barely move in? Great potential, but needs a lot of work. With the proper investment the Zoo wouldn't have so many dilapidated structures, box fans cooling the animals, and bare minimum toys for them to enjoy.

We love the splash pad here, such a great thing to add to the zoo! I recommend getting a boat ticket to see quiet a few animals you wouldn't be able to see from just walking around. But make sure you have someone who knows what animals they are. Have a gotten a few rises where they couldn't tell us any info just give us a ride....

Went with my son, his wife & my 2&1/2 yr.old grandson, Noah. The Zoo & gardens were absolutely beautiful. We had a wonderful time. My daughter-in-law wanted to buy a hat in gift shop & they didn't have one? Need to add items to buy @ the gift shop.

I lived in Monroe/West Monroe, LA for 27 years and I haven't lived there for 2 years so this review is based on those 27 years of going to the zoo. The Louisiana Purchase Gardens Zoo always had fun stuff going on depending on the time of year. Its smaller than other zoos. The staff are usually friendly and knowledgeable, but the animals always looked so sickly, and their cages never really seemed clean ex: tigers water always green with algae and poop literally everywhere all over the animal cages etc. (not saying they never cleaned them but compaired to other zoos the animals and their cages here looked terrible...always) I always left sad for the animals.

We loved this zoo. The animals are well cared for, the exhibits are up close and personal. We liked the monkeys here best of all. You can take a boat ride down their river. We spent about an hour and a half here. The price was very reasonable for a small zoo. Well worth it to stop in.

We love the zoo and gardens and the gardens part of it places some of the wildlife in a more realistic environment, which is always nice. With that said some zoo habitat are in large cages the size of bedrooms which makes wildlife photography difficult since I don't want to show the "hand of man" in the images. All in all its a very nice place and to be honest, for the price it's amazing.

Took our 9 yr old daughter and 3 yr old grandson. For the money I wasn't impressed...Caldwell in Tyler had more to offer. This zoo seems to be in dire need of repair. Many of the buildings were closed and rundown looking. Several of the exhibit areas were empty and walkways were in need of repair. Only saw one employee there and had she not told us she worked there she looked like a visitor in shorts & a T-shirt. If your headed west save your time & money for Caldwell.

My kids and I have always loved zoo trips. Since our relocation to the Monroe/West Monroe area we found our local zoo and fell in love. They have a boat ride (with very knowledgeable tour guides) , a splash pad to cool off in, and you never see trash or litter. We go so often that some of the monkeys recognize us and will start screaming and swinging when we come by. They are really funny.

This place was so awesome and more than worth the money! Plenty of animals to see, playground area, splash pad area, train, boat rides, and super friendly staff. We went during their "winter hours" even though it is March so not sure if they allow or do the following things during their peak season-Today I saw people who had brought in an ice chest and snacks. Also I was able to get one of their "fun" strollers for free. We will definitely be coming back!

Help support the Louisiana Purchase Garden and Zoo! It's not what it used to be but is still nice and can be made awesome again. Loss of the Elephant, Giraffe and Penelope the Hippo as well as several other exhibits hurts the overall experience for anyone who was able to enjoy seeing them years ago. Hopefully new improvements will be made. The train is up and redone so it's a good ride to see some animals, the boat ride too. Go to the Zoo, have some fun.

Nice little zoo with a great train ride and boat ride. Small enough that it does not consume your entire day. Large enough to keep the kids entertained. Zoo appears to need some financial support from the city, parish, and state. Some buildings and structures need to be replaced or removed. The animals are well cared for and the staff are friendly. The zoo just needs more money to invest maintenance.

To hot right now. We went 4 falls ago, all animals were cool and active. Last Saturday in June, all animals were resting in the shade. Tiger cage mote was green and slimy. Poor tiger had nothing to swim in. The splash park must be taking all the water and effort of the parks resources

I like the zoo. If you're looking for something comparative to another zoo like Houston or new Orleans, you'll be disappointed, but our local zoo has it's own qualities that make it great. I love the boat ride. I'm not a fan of the train though, it just seems too short. Although it was still fun

Zoo was really outdated bathroom facilities are dirty a lot of empty cages no zebras or Giraffes like website States trains and boat were not in service, side walks not very safe due to being uneven not very handicapped accessible, lastly cages were overgrown with vines. Save your money go elsewhere.

I love zoos. Unfortunately the location and financial situation of this one is far below what is needed for a thriving zoo. The small splash park was a great addition to it, however under the previously deteriorating conditions of this once glorious place didn't need an attraction to draw away from what this place is about, the animals! I grew up going to this zoo and it looks nothing like its former glory.

There are family-friendly events throughout the year, and organizations and businesses from around the area support them and bring more people to the area. We love our zoo!

Unfortunately, this is not a Vacation hot spot. There are not very many exotic animals. It’s apparent the city of Monroe doesn’t value or care to use any city funds to rebuild and bring this facility into the 21st Century!

There have been many improvements since our last visit. There were more flowers and well kept gardens. Shade trees cover most of the walkways now, allowing a more comfortable stroll through the sites. The boat ride tour guides enrich the experience with colorful stories and friendly banter. Every staff member we encountered made pleasant conversations. Progress in greater animal freedom and comfort was obvious. The splash pad increased the fun x 10 for the kids. We had a wonderful day.

It's a nice place to be going with your friends and family which I really love the kangaroos and the workers there are really nice and friendly. The problem is that the last time I went there back in July of 2014 most of the animal cages were not cleaned up and there were cracks in the sidewalks.

We loved this zoo. The place is beautiful with all the flowers and gardens. The staff is what really made this zoo trip amazing for my little family! They care so much about the animals, unlike I’ve ever seen before! We got the luxury to meet two beautiful macaw birds in person! It was amazing. For all the people complaining, saying to take your money elsewhere, it’s literally only $6 per adult. Make a donation if you actually care. As you can imagine it takes a lot of money to keep a zoo running. We loved this zoo !!!

We were visiting Monroe for a few days and I decided to take my kids to the zoo. What a wonderful place to spend our afternoon. The staff was friendly, the animal exhibits are nice and the boat ride was entertaining. The splash park was an extra bonus and helped the kids cool off. My children and I really enjoyed our visit! Whether you are local or passing though Monroe as we were; be sure to check this place out!! Supporting places like this ensure our children have fun, safe, educational places to learn and explore!

the Monroe zoo is okay it could be better we need more variety of animals the animals that are there look old and sick. certain parts of the zoo is shut down the train is never working so they really just need to improve. Recently they added a splash pad but I think instead of adding a splash pad they should have got the train working and open up the extra exhibits and got more variety of animals.

THE park area stay open to midnight was a great help i really needed somewhere to relax and chill this was the perfect park.. Sometimes you might have others in the park but everyone stays to there self.

The zoo was decent however they really need to train there staff to take off the halters on the animals in the petting zoo more often. It was obvious that the halters had been on those animals so long that it rubbed the hair off. The poor donkey and mini horses skin was rubbed raw.

This place is run down, dirty, and downright unsafe. Most of the animals live in cramped and dirty conditions. The staff are rude and seem to go out of their way to be unfriendly. Personally, I am surprised the ASPCA has not been active in trying to get this place closed. The zoo in Tyler, TX is far superior.

Not many animals and the tiger was so confined all he could do was just stand beside the small pool he had in his enclosure. Also one of the main reasons for my visit was to let our son ride the boat and the train but when I went to buy the tickets for the train and boat(which are not included in the price to enter the zoo) I was told that I could purchase the tickets but would have to wait a few hours to ride them because there was a school field trip there and they only allow the school kids ride them from 9:00 am till 1:00 pm even thought the train and boat were both sitting idle the whole time we were there (enough time to walk around the whole zoo twice).

I love visiting different zoos around the nation when traveling and this zoo is definitely one of my favorites. The staff are so knowledgeable, personable, and friendly. We highly enjoyed the boat ride - our guide was funny and shared with us many fun facts about the animals. While walking around the park other animal experts spoke with us and shared information. The animals were very active and seemed to really enjoy their habitats. I’m glad we were able to visit the location and highly recommend it. They also have a cute little kiddo water park for guests to enjoy, a train ride, and food/gift shop.

This was a great lace for a field trip! The animals are so friendly. But watch out for a goose guarding the trash can this thing almost attacked me! But when you want to go see the hippo you might want to cover your nose! And the gift shop is closed till winter.

Has a snack bar with very good food - burgers, fries, etc. Limited gift shop but fun for little kiddos. Picnic table outside the gates if you prefer to bring a lunch. Animals are well cared for. No terrible smells which says to me that they keep the pens clean. The boat ride is awesome. Kids loved it. Very reasonable pricing. Highly suggest for a fun family outing. The swimming tiger was the most fun to me as it was very interactive the day we went.

It was very hot the day we went, so the splash pad came in handy for the kids. Every time we go they get better and better.

enjoyed the boat ride. overall it was decent. ill go next time and bring some kids im sure they would enjoy. very helpful staff. kudos to those very hardworking staff maintaining the zoo

Not that big, but they still have quite a few animals. I got a ticket for the train ride only for the train to stop working before my turn came up. Still a good visit if you have some free time on your hands.

We loved the new North American exhibit with wolves, deer, coyotes, foxes and black bear. They still have a great collection of large cats, including a tiger we watched play in a pool with a big orange ball. The boat guide was charming and informative. Our daughter also spent a lot of time in the splash pad. It was a good way to spend a hot day in Monroe.

A little dated and fallen on hard times. Very low price. The boat tour is very unique. The animals basically have free range. Nice little zoo.

This zoo is very well taken care of and has way more animals than I expected. The staff were awesome and really helped educate us.
