It is still a great place to bring younger children and let them see some pretty awesome animals. The only downside is they don't have as many animals as they use to when I was growing up. There are no lions, and no elephants. But there is plenty of other things to see.

First let me say, that I don't like seeing animals in captivity, but as it really does promote opportunities for endangered species I have to accept there Is some good in zoos. So if we are going to have zoos then I like this one because you are so close to the animals and it is easily navigated. It really is all about the timing of your visit. It you visit when the animals are frisky and hungry then it is amazing. And the playground is lots of fun for the kids as well. Good picnic spots abound. I much prefer it to the New Orleans Zoo, because it is so much easier and the animals are so much closer.

The only place to get refreshments was the opposite end of the zoo from the entrance, meaning a walk in Louisiana heat with little to drink. And many of the enclosure, particularly the bird cages, had cob webs in the bars. The only positive I could really give was that the animals seemed in good health and I really liked the tiger enclosure.

Great Disc Golf Course. Perfect for all skill levels. Ended up 14 over PAR but only 2nd time I have played. Who ever designed the course knew what they were doing it really challenged my friends who do tournaments consistently.

Great and affordable zoo...fun for a day out

Sub par zoo. Brought the 8 year old and tried to attend the otter demonstration posted for 3 o'clock. No zoo employees ever showed up. Same thing with the pavillion show. We asked the staff about it on the way out, were told to fill out a complaint, which we did, but offered no refund or any other remedy.

All the animals were very active and the staff were everywhere feeding and cleaning up after them. I was happy to see them being so well taken care of during my stay there. That's is something I really look for when I got to a zoo. The fruit bars were our favorite! All in all it was a good trip. The lady at the front is a little rude though.

If you're looking for a more laid back zoo this is your place. At times it seemed like we were the only ppl there. The shade was amazing and there were plenty of places to stop and picnic. They had a fun little play area for the kids right next to the ice cream shop. The only drawback to this zoo is there aren't a ton of animals. The animals they do have seem to have very nice and large areas.

We were very excited about going but we have a few remarks. The parking lot seems old and lacking maintenance. The entrance part was ok, but as we entered the park we really missed some signs- perhaps more clear signs? The animals seemed very tired and there were just a couple of a few. We will definitely rethink about going again.

Nice, impressive green space tucked away on the north side of Baton Rouge. At a little over 8 bucks for adults, it won't break the bank to bring the family. We went for the Zoolights event, highly recommend it if you can make it.

Boo at the Zoo was a blast. The kids had a really fun time. The food was good, had a chili dog, chips and a drink. Train ride was really fun, and the Gift Shop had a ton of interesting things. Would reccoumend going if you have kids^.^

Took my 26 yo autistic son. Even with the heat the zoo has lots of shade and the walk was bearable. The animals were more active than I was expecting but we did go when they opened at 9:30.

BREC's Baton Rouge Zoo is overall a pretty nice little zoo, but is nowhere near the scale and quality of a more well-funded zoo like the Audibon in New Orleans. There are a variety of different animals from all over the world, and a host of exhibits that feature different cultures and geographic locations. For example, there is an East Asian-themed area where you can see a couple of tigers, an African section with zebras and giraffes, and, of course, and Louisiana-themed area with Louisiana reptiles and amphibians for example. There is a play area for children, and a train ride that circles the park for a small ticket fee. In terms of amenities , there is a small counter service restaurant with a couple of simple food options, and a beverage shack with some beverage options and ice cream. The zoo hosts a number of events for people of all ages, which all seem like a lot of fun, though I have never personally participated. I would definitely encourage anyone interested in visiting to see what events they are offering, because they always seem like a lot of fun. Overall, the zoo is a nice place to take your kids, or perhaps a date if you are animal lovers.

The staff were wonderful and I love the zoo usually. This time, however, the animals seemed so sad. The rhino, tigers, bear and primates didn't move. Most leaning against walls. The animals looked healthy I just wish they had some toys maybe to stimulate them. Just a thought.

Smaller than the average zoo, enclosures are outdated and not maintained well. The animals were not provided with motivational toys and appeared to be bored. While the grounds provided a pleasant afternoon walk, there seemed to be more “service areas” than actual animal enclosures. Several animals were missing any some you would expect to see in a zoo were not included (e.g. elephant, giraffe).

Stopped by for a special trip for our kids coming home from vacation. Its a wonderful zoo. We were walking by a pelican display and there was an employee feeding the pelicans and she actually gave us pretty amazing info on the birds without us even having to asked. We stayed until she was done feeding enjoying her input.

You'll want to visit a larger zoo if you desire to see some exotic animals (larger ones). It is still sorry a trip. This is a beautiful little zoo. I loved all the tree cover and the animals were pretty neat. Some of the habitats seemed a bit small for the larger animals, which made us a bit sad. Otherwise it's a nice place to visit, not too expensive.

Went today for the first time in years. There were so many enclosures with nothing and when there were animals there was only one! The poor hippo did nothing but pace back and forth under water. It was so depressing I'll never go back!

Clean, quiet, peaceful zoo. I felt like some of the enclosures could have been larger, and many of the animals were alone in their environments. They looked bored. All in all, it's a good day trip with the family and not terribly expensive.

Beautifully landscaped grounds. Nice and quiet. Plenty of shade on a hot sunny day. Several benches along the paths to allow you to rest or picnic. Staff was very friendly and polite. I would suggest the overnight Safari Night stay for family's and small groups. We had a group of 30 cub scouts and they loved it. The scouts saw first hand the amount of attention and time the workers give to each animals. I've gone to zoos and have seen tiny, unhappy animals. You can definitely tell these animals are well cared for. Some of them are huge! What this zoo lacks in size, it definitely makes up for with the thought and attention that went into landscaping and those extra things that have been added to make each visitors experience special. If you're looking for a nice leisurely stroll at the zoo without thousands of people this is your place. Not to mention that all the facilities are CLEAN. No filthy restrooms at this zoo. We will definely be returning next time we're in Baton Rouge!

They have lost some of the animals they used to have, but the ones there seem happier in larger and better habitats. The layout of the zoo also has more trees and greenery than it used too. The staff & animal keepers are very knowledgeable & eager to talk about the animals, especially the lady who keeps the rhinos, she was excellent!! And the train is ALWAYS a hit with my little one! Boo at the Zoo is a must for our family every year! Very family friendly and fun for the kids and adults. There are trick-or-treat stations set up throughout the zoo for the kids as well as many fall themed spots set up that are perfect for taking pics. And, of course, all the little ones in their costumes are so very cute!

One of the less expensive, large family outings to go on in BR. Zoo had lost many of the animals I grew up seeing, and is under a good bit of construction, but the kids still had as much fun as I did. $2.00 train rides are most worth it.

Started the day off with the train ride. It was an okay ride, but the only animals we saw were peacocks and a couple geese. We sat in the last train car and couldn't hear the woman because the speakers in the back didn't work. Food options are very limited. The only place for lunch is Flamingo Cafe, with a very basic menu of hamburgers, hot dogs, and chicken nuggets. We enjoyed walking around; there were big walkways, lots of shade, and scarce crowds. A lot of animals were moving about, playing, or eating, which we enjoyed. However, it seemed like a lot of exhibits were empty, and most habitat areas needed some TLC. It shows its age. Our biggest complaint of the day hands down is the brochure map, posted maps, and lack of signage. We spent most of the day trying to figure out where we were, and both my husband and I deal with maps every day at our jobs. The posted map signs were terrible and most unhelpful. Each one had the map oriented in a different direction. There were no signs directing guests in the directions of the exhibits. The brochure map wasn't that great either, but thank goodness we had it, or else we might still be walking around trying to find our way out. Overall, we enjoyed our day at the zoo but hope that it get the infusion of cash that it needs to be a viable zoo.

My nephews came in town and we had a good time at the Baton Rouge zoo. There were not many people there and the zoo is pretty well shaded with all the trees around the exhibits! One of my nephews absolutely LOVES trains so the $2 per person to ride the train around the whole park was well worth the money. You don’t see many of the exhibits while riding the train but it’s a good sit down break with a breeze. Some of the exhibits for the animals are a little sad - the jaguar for instance kept pacing and mentally looked unstable, the hippo had a really small exhibit with no grass and little water...but they’re spending money to build new exhibits for birds. We also enjoyed the petting zoo/barn with a playground in front of it - the boys loved playing on that which seemed to finally zap the rest of their energy before we left the park.

Very nice zoo to spend a day. Lots of animals to see. Many were not out the day we went due to water issues. Don't think we should of had to pay full price due to that. No ice for drunks due to no water. They should had gone to the store and planned better. Ticket staff, store and train engineer were all friendly!

Pleasantly surprised to have seen some bats, I believe they're flying foxes. I wouldn't expect too much different animals than your typical zoo animals though. I went on a lovely day and thoroughly enjoyed my time. It is on the small side but not overly noticeable.

It had been awhile since I last been to the Zoo... My little girl had a birthday and we decided to take her since she's never been. We honestly had so much fun! The one complaint we have is(well 2)... Is there should have been more animals there and the prices are ridiculously high, water was 3 dollars!! Otherwise we really did enjoy ourselves and are actually planning on taking another trip out there.

I love love the zoo!!! I have been coming to the zoo for 45 years. Every experience here has been a great and memorable one. The keepers here really care about the animals and work hard to meet their daily needs. Most people don't realize that the zoo has an excellent breeding program that helps raise the numbers of endangered species. The zoo is not only a fun outting, it is an educational place where one can learn a lot about animals habits, their natural habitats, conservation, symbiotic relationships, the breeding program, and what we as humans can do to make sure animals thrive. I am blessed and grateful to be one of the many kids that helped to collect pennies for the first elephants at the zoo. I hold the zoo dear to my heart. The very highest recommendation!!!

Went on Saturday,June 1st..completely disappointed..hardly any animals ...no elephants, lions , tigers , monkeys , exotic birds etc. Saw what appeared to be emancipated animals & animals with NO water in in their enclosures . "Petting Zoo " hardly had any animals. Not enough benches around til after passing concession stand & didn't see any water fountains @all . 3 adults & a 2 & a half yr. old. Been about 10 yrs. since last time there ...don't think we'll be going back. So where are all the animals that are normally @ a Zoo ?

Food was great and the animals looked well taken care of also very friendly Staff and it is a very beautiful place so overall a great experience. Definitely Recommend 10 out of 10.

This property is a nice property. Growing up I loved going to the zoo with my family. Today I went with my 2 kids, 2 niece's, nephew, and my brother and his wife. There was very limited animals to see. Mainly different species of birds. Staff was nice. Most of the habitats were closed.

I DO RECOMMEND YOU TRY THE TRAIN RIDE. THE YOUNG LADY RUNNING THE TRAIN GAVE A NICE TOUR AROUND THE ZOO. COMING FROM CINCINNATI. WHO HAS A WONDERFUL ZOO. One of my favorite zoos! The atmosphere is just great. Not too busy for the location so you can just relax and enjoy the experience. I love the natural feel of this place. There is vegetation and wildlife everywhere. The animal were so cool and well taken care of. We went around Halloween time and they had decorated and made it very festive. They had many little Halloween scenes to take pictures at too! Highly recommend

First off great zoo. the zoo easy going fun staff who are there for any questions you may have. We also took the train ride at a going rate of 2 dollars per person, but unfortunately the radio the conductor was using had a short in it so sometimes when he spoke we couldn't hear. The zoo has an aquarium also has 2 places to stop and snack one place serving hot foods the others ice cream and other assorted snacks. But all in all a great place to bring the kids and have a fun time.

So much fun! Literally my favorite zoo ever. We make a special trip to see it otw to NOLA. Very open exhibits with turtles and peacocks roaming around free. Very nice staff!

We had a great experience at the zoo this past week! Always a pleasure to see the Lively animals, monkeys were putting on a show! Giraffe was playing peek-a-boo from his doorway LOL and we seen multiple snakes at the bridge while feeding the turtles. The food court was quite busy for early Friday, but the food was good. The gift shop is always nice and neat very clean and lots of gifts to choose from! We did not get to ride the train, for it being too busy and the line too long. Overall, we enjoyed it. We loved the Airboat for pictures!

Baton Rouge Zoo is super cute. It's smaller but that doesn't mean it's not worth it. Plus is beautifully landscaped. The train takes you around the outer parts of the zoo. It's not expensive and it's fun. We had a great time.

This is a great little zoo. I read some of the reviews. Many said they didn't see many animals, the animals they did see did nothing, and it was overgrown. First off, they way the enclosures are set up, we saw almost every single animal. Second, a good bit of the animals were moving around and some even playing together. I mean, what do y'all expect, they aren't going to juggle for you. Third, it was mostly well maintained. There was some trash from careless people throwing their garbage down but not dirty by any means. I feel the brush was well maintained as well. Most animals aren't cool with lawn mowers anyway. This was an awesome zoo especially for younger children. Not so big that you feel like you have gone through Disney world by the end and your little ones are cranky. My only complaint is there weren't any elephants or lions but still a 5 star zoo to me. We spent about 4 fun hours here and will for sure be back!

The Baton Rouge zoo grounds are beautiful. It's a great outing for the family. Children will enjoy all the animals, playground, petting zoo, and train. There's plenty of shady spots and benches to escape the hot sun. There is a cafe with outside seating that serves hamburgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, nachos, french fries, chips and drinks. Be sure to look for the free roaming peacocks. They are fun to watch and like to hang out around the cafe.

We did the zoo sleep with our girlscout troop. Peyshawn (sorry I butchered the spelling) was our guide and she was awesome. Will definitely do this again great experience for kids and parents.

This is one of my favorite zoos in Louisiana. Great prices, great animals & staff. Most of the walk ways are covered by the trees. Petting zoo, train, feed fishes, playground, concessions, and of course the animal.

It's a fine zoo, and the kids area is pretty great. Not a lot of food options but you can bring in your own. You can tell the keepers love their animals. There was just a lot of down time during our visit.

Lovely animals, crisp fall day, extremely clean park and enclosures. Got lucky and it was lunch time for all the animals so pretty much all we're out. Gave 4 stars because one alligator only, also he laid in his tiny mud puddle...looked sad. Anyways great place for families and children!
