REVIEWS OF 50 West Vineyards IN West Virginia

Dan Becker

We had our wine tasting at their outside pavilion. Dani had the traditional tasting of four whites and two red wines. However, our server lined up a nice “almost vertical” 2014, 2015, and 2016 Aldie Heights Cuvée for me, and the Merlot so I could taste all of their reds. The 2016 Aldie Heights Cuvée was the overall favorite, although at $38 per bottle it is a bit pricey. A great winery with a very nice view of their vineyards.

Pam Arguelles

Fabulous scenery, good wines & great customer service.

Micalah Garza

Beautiful views, good wine. Friendly staff and free Tesla destination charger. Tasting menu when we visited was a little light on reds and favored the white wines but the wines were well balanced and enjoyable. You can subtly see their interest in the environment by looking at the bird development they encourage.

Victoria Wright

Beautiful winery and great wines! 50 West has a strong focus on quality. Rikki took me through the tasting and she was a joy to talk to!

Traci Schmitz

Greg Noll

Good views and food. Don't drink but friends who do liked the wine

Joseph Henney

Great view and wine. The live music is great and in the summer the white sangria is amazing.

Randy Williams

Excellent wines, knowledgeable and considerate staff, plus a great view. Try the Petit Verdot, if you like reds. Very tasty Petit Mensang as well for whites.

Marya Unrath

Mostly deep reds

If you like crisp white wines and a good view this is the place for you! However, I would like to add an extra two cents because on my third visit here I did have an unpleasant time. If you only care about the wine, do not read past this point, the wine is great. I went here for a friends birthday, the week before she had been here and asked if it was ok to bring a group of people here for a birthday. They said it was fine, but that they could not accommodate balloons inside, only outside. Thrilled, we made our plans. A week later we showed up with a picnic and crew in tow, as well as a few balloons. When we got here we were immediately greeted by the manager who informed us we could not have balloons at all. We informed her that we had been told it was fine outside but not inside. She informed us it was not ok either way and the website said so. After she left, we searched the website and found no mention of balloons so we stayed where we were. Later, the manager came back out to question why we had not abandoned the balloons. After we informed her that the website had made no distinction, she proceeded to say “Also, I’m the manager” and that essentially what she said went. When she realized the website said nothing of balloons, she made a weak excuse and still made us get rid of them. After this odd interaction, the manager acted very cold to us and did not offer the same amenities to guests when it began to rain as I had previously received from other managers. The point in explaining this all is: 1) The vineyard needs to standardize it’s protocol and normalize it among staff, because it made an otherwise fun day very awkward and 2) if you are planning to have an event here, validate plans with the manager who will be here day of so there is no confusion. I hate to say that something that was so small made such a big impact, but we felt incredibly unwelcome and unwanted after this and made the day very uncomfortable. I will not be back to this vineyard.

Had a great time and great wine. We really liked that you could do a flight or tasting. We grabed some flights and some delicious bread and just relaxed. Wine was all very good and the staff was fantastic.

Scott Hosfeld

Good wine for a local vineyard. Love music on Friday

David A Ruch

Great time. The whites were surprisingly refreshing and the reds uniquely complex. Emily was our great hostess for the tasting. Very enjoyable personality and articulate in her wine knowledge. It was the kind of experience that makes you want to tell someone and definitely come back. We will. All the way from Charlotte.

We were so lucky to stumble onto this winery! The man behind the bar was very patient with us and conversational as I am sure it was made plainly obvious we didn't know much about wine. The tasting I ordered came with paired chocolates - what fun! It wasn't very busy when we dropped by close to sunset, but there were several groups who seemed to be enjoying themselves well. A musician sang and played live music, she was quite talented and it was the perfect music for the gorgeous setting! I really liked the wine and bought a bottle.

The grounds are well kept and has a scenic view down the hill or valley. Delicious wine and the live band was amazing.

Customer service isn't their thing! I was on a wine tour with 7 other guests for a bachelorette party. My friend organized it so that we have a wine tasting at all 3 vineyards. 50 west was our second vineyard. Upon arrival, the guy forgot about our reservation. So he went up stairs and set up a tasting real fast. Then while we are tasting, (take in mind their are 8 total and we are all from out of time, taking our time and talking) the guy would wait one minute and start talking and pouring in between wines without getting anyone's attention or waiting. After the second wine he would start pouring wine on top of wine, literally was pouring new wine on top of the wine he just poured. The tasting was so fast, that we felt like we were a huge inconvenience.

Beautiful view with mostly tasty wines.

My group had a very bad experience with 50 West. I hired a bus to do a tour of northern VA wineries for my wife's birthday. 50 West was supposed to be the last of three wineries we visited, but when we showed up we received a less than hospitable reception. The tasting manager stopped the bus immediately and asked if we had a reservation. We did not, so he said he would see what he could do and returned inside. Several minutes went by and he did not return so I went inside to talk to him. He was not making any effort to accommodate us and stated we were not allowed inside because they did not allow groups without a reservation. I informed him that nowhere on their website does it say anything about this. I told him we came all the way out from DC and it was my wife's birthday, could he please make an exception? Still the answer was no. I told him that we didn't need a group tasting and were happy to split into smaller groups. There was only 11 of us in our group, so it wasn't as if there were 30 of us about to take over the tasting room. Also, the winery wasn't even crowded at that time. I was then told we were not allowed inside. He said they were going to announce last call soon even though they their advertised closing time was 6:30 PM. It was 5:40 PM. I again pleaded with him but he said it was their policy. I reminded him that this policy was not made available to the public. He said our bus tour company should have known and told me. I told him they had not. Realizing I was making no progress I asked to speak to the manager. He said he was the manager and that I needed to leave. I can not recall ever being treated this rudely for no reason. I returned to the bus and we returned to DC having only seen two wineries thanks to 50 West. I highly discourage anyone from visiting this winery. Their customer service and hospitality are severely lacking.

Wonderful white wines, nice facility and great views. Meagan did our tasting; she was pleasant and engaging.

Awesome place.

Very nice place to grab a glass and sit outside and enjoy the view. Love the fact you can get a flight instead of just a generic tasting. Will definitely get coming back.

Brandon Simmons

A nice find, excellent view of mountains from the outside seating. Wines were good, Chardonnay was superb. Only downside was employees - a bit unprofessional as they were talking openly about personal matters between themselves.

Anthony Hayes

Awesome tasting. I am the dd the ladies had a great time.

Jaime Robillard

Our tasting associate was delightful, I wasn't crazy about the wine-- except the rosé- delicious! I'm going to go back in two years when their own grapes are ready for harvest.

First time at 50 West Winery today and it was amazing. Thank you so much to the friendly and knowledgable staff. On an unseasonably warm December day, the patio and doors were open and everyone was having a great time (dogs included). The wine was delicious and ended up purchasing two bottles. We also enjoyed a loaf of bread and cheese. The loaf of bread was large and freshly baked (still warm) and they provided the cheese board and utensils. Beginning to end a fantastic experience.

One of the prettier views at a Loudon County winery. Nice Chambourcin and Cuvee (bold red blend). Chardony is not your usual VA Chard, but I found it nice. Tasting room a bit small and tastings can get backed up on a busy day

We moved from California to Middleburg because of their famous wineries around town. We stumbled into 50 West Vineyards and fell in love with it at first sight. The club house was amazing! Jeremy, the tasting manager, opened his arms to us with outstanding customer service. He gave us tips on all the vineyards around town to try. He was professional and very knowledgeable about wine in general. We even got free tasting from him! We immediately signed up for their VIP membership because of the awesome wine we tasted at 50 West and Jeremy's outstanding service. Thanks Jeremy & we'll be back soon!

I did not enjoy 50 West very much. My boyfriend and I received free tasting cards from the tasting room manager, Brian. We went on a Saturday, and of course the bar was crowded as expected. Long story short, we patiently waited for a spot until one opened up. Once we got to the bar, we were overlooked several times and a couple that came in after us were helped right away before someone finally acknowledged us. I understand how busy things get from working in the service industry, but a simple acknowledgment would have made me feel more welcome. Now onto the wine.... I'm not sure if I had a bad taste in my mouth from being ignored, or if the wine wasn't great. Either way, I will not be visiting this winery again. There's a better option across the street.

Probably my favorite winery in the area - the smaller venue felt more comfortable and welcoming than Cana or Quattro Gumba. The staff was also really nice and the wine was solid. Bonus for having live music midday.

Making this review a little late but felt it was necessary to leave one due to a pleasant first visit. Our visit was amazing, thank you so much to the friendly and knowledgable staff. My group visited on a very warm day, the patio and doors were open and everyone was having a great time with the live music and good wine (whites and reds). We enjoyed a charcuterie plate...50 West has great cheeses/meats and plenty of space to enjoy the festivities. Amazing views, nice sized parking lot and a great atmosphere indoors and out.

Nice wines, beautiful venue, but a little more on the expensive side. Overall, worth a trip.

Jeffrey Wilson

Ricki was so nice to us! On our second trip back to 50W she remembered us and the particular wine we drank (we had forgotten...). This time around we chose to go to the club house instead of the General tasting area — a more quiet and intimate experience! The story is that this house turned tasting room was built by a Frank Lloyd Wright protege and moved to this site in 1985 — really interesting! So, it is a mid-century Modern house that you can enjoy and explore while drinking some really great wine and having some exquisite snacks — try the bread basket with the fresh mozzarella cheese! The wines are fine too while you are taking in some of the best views around from the stylish deck!

Jonathon Black

Great wines, fantastic views, and great staff. Tasting room is a converted horse barn with lots of charm. Members club house is a converted house with lots of windows having Bull Run Mts. as the view.

Cozy place with nice view. Try the whites!
