The view and the venue is gorgeous! The staff was very friendly and helpful. They have blankets available to lay on, so you can enjoy the view in the expansive lawn area. I didn’t love the wine, but to each their own. The view made up for everything the wine was lacking. Will definitely return in the future!

Beautiful place to spend a few hours on weekends. The wines are somewhat decent. I really like the ambiance. Didn't try the food. The settings is amazing with the Appalachians right on your face. The bathrooms were very clean too. That tells me that the management is doing a great job. I would definitely come back

I was sadly let down by our visit to Pippin Hill today. Per the suggestion of the website, we visited on a Sunday rather than a busy Saturday. It is Memorial Day weekend and their first Sunday of the season with live music, so we anticipated a busy visit, but what we did not anticipate was to be greeted by a hostess who informed us that the kitchen was closing 2.5 hours early and that there were 26 parties ahead of us on the wait list, so she suggested we just not attempt to get a table. With that said, there was no option for any food (and you are not allowed to bring any outside food). I had been planning this visit for months and was especially looking forward to the famed food. It really felt like they had over-promoted themselves and couldn’t keep up with what they have promised in their marketing (a simple way to acknowledge this demand would be to allow people to bring a picnic—visitors can still enjoy the famous atmosphere, property, and wines, and have the option to eat). We ended up leaving (didn’t want to drink on an empty stomach), went down the road to Dr. Ho’s Humble Pies, and ate some amazing beet, arugula salads, and goat cheese salads with fresh Rosemary Focaccia (very unexpected!). We then returned to Pippin Hill, did a tasting which unfortunately felt just mediocre, bought one bottle, and then left. Overall, I just felt very let down. The website and social media for Pippin Hill feels very intentional, people-oriented, and warm, but to arrive on Memorial Day weekend and be greeted with “our kitchen is closing early-sorry” just felt like poor planning on their end. I wish I could have left a better review, but this truly was a let down from what I had been anticipating for a while :-/

My two sisters and I visited on Sunday and had an incredible experience. We knew they get busy on Saturdays, so we planned ahead and decided Sunday would be our best bet. We figured we'd have to wait for a table for lunch, so we arrived early, put our name on the list to sit outside, and did a tasting at the bar while we waited. Emily, our bartender, was fantastic. We got to try five wines (for $10!) plus a couple other samples she kindly gave us before we each decided on a full glass. She told us all about Pippin's wines, the vineyard, their chickens, the garden... on and on. She was a delight to talk to. It was beautiful outside so we walked around the grounds with our glasses of wine while we waited for our table, and by the time we'd done a loop and taken in the scenery, our table was ready. Service was fantastic, the food was delicious, and the view is unbeatable. Re: comments about "small portions" — the menu is made up of curated small plates, so of course the portions are small. However, my sisters and I had a cheese/meat board and three others plates and were MORE than satisfied (and we are not light eaters...). Take a deep breath, enjoy the scenery, and relax — you'll enjoy the experience a whole lot more. We will definitely return to Pippin whenever we are in Charlottesville.

Lovely views, service, facility

Worker leaving Pippen Hill property towing a 30 ft trailer with Pippen hill written on the truck pulled out into oncoming traffic at 45mph right in front of me - I've never skidded so far in my life. And guess what I get from the woman driving - a big fat ol' middle finger. Absolutely disgusting behavior, not to mention the reckless endangerment and carelessness of their employees.

If you post a comment they don’t like, about a business where they plan to be a vendor, W. Scatena will argue with, harass, and insult you, to the point of making that other business look awful! This isn’t the kind of place or person I want to do business with.

Great spot, excellent mountain view wonderful service!

Absolutely breath taking view and great wines.

Good food, and great views. Its not my favorite wine in the area, but it is by no means the worst. It is worth a visit if just for the atmosphere.

We are from Germany. Weingut in traumhaft schöner Lage mit sehr guter Probierstube. Weine ( 4 probiert) gut, besonders der Merlot Riserva. Freundlicher Service. Gefunden durch das Internet auf unserer Virginia-Rundreise

Beautiful scenery. Wait person not very friendly. Ordered roasted chicken and asked if it was chicken breast. Was told "always ".it was dark meat and had a gristle in it.

Was surprisingly disappointed in the wine selection, even if it's always full! Beautiful location but didn't stay more than half an hour .

Food & wine was exquisite. Staff fantastic, the View.... Breath Taking, really enjoyed my Birthday. It looks great in the pics on the website but in person the pics don't do it justice. Really it's a must visit. Matter of fact I'm headed there tomorrow. Hope to see you there ........

ALERT: The pizza is OFF the menu. Stead clear of the fish tacos. The wine is good to OK, the view is pretty. The set up is aggravating. No outside food is allowed and they won’t allow food on the patio- ONLY inside and from their restaurant. You can’t buy a cheeseboard at the restaurant and bring it to the patio?? There’s too many amazing vineyards in this area to come back here.

Austin Blais

Attended an event here. Servers were courteous, food was delicious and some of it is grown in the garden on-site, and the wine has improved significantly in the past few years. Scenery cannot be beat. Beautiful property.

Lauren Sanders

Beautiful winery with extremely friendly and accommodating staff. We will be stopping here again for sure! Bought a few bottles for home that we look forward to trying this week!

Pippin Hill, you had me at Merlot. But seriously, this winery is one of the most beloved in Virginia for many reasons. Situated in the heart of Virginia wine country, Pippin Hills doesn't just grow fine wines - they also cultivate a fresh, seasonal, farm-to-table culinary experience. Overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains, this winery is an idyllic place to spend the day. Pippin Hill's ideal terroir and sustainable viticulture allow them to produce some of Virginia's best wines. At the 2018 Virginia Governor's Cup, Pippin Hill's Viognier 2016, Merlot Reserve 2015, Vintner's Meritage Reserve 2013, and Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 were awarded gold medals. Their Chardonnay Reserve 2016 and Petit Verdot 2015 took silver medals. You can experience these wines at the hand-carved wooden bar in their beautiful, quaint tasting room. They also grow their own herbs and vegetables on-site, which means you'll get the freshest ingredients straight from the kitchen garden or from other local farmers if you choose to sample some of their food. While I haven't had food here yet, I love that everything is fresh, seasonal, and local. I highly recommend walking around the kitchen gardens if you have time. A tasting flight consists of five 1-oz. pours for $10/person. A reserve flight is four wines for $13. The difference between the tasting and the reserve is that the tasting consists of four whites and one red, while the reserve consists of a sparkling, a white, and two reds. My favorite, hands down, is their Viognier 2016. It's light, crisp, with notes of lemongrass and pear on the nose and floral and fruity notes on the palate. Such a well-balanced wine that goes perfectly with everything. I also really enjoyed their Cab Sauvignon, which had hints of blackberries and blueberries and a smoky finish. I love visiting Pippin Hill - the breathtaking scenic views; the excellent wine selection; the freshly grown, seasonal cuisine; the sustainable vineyard-and-farm-to-table ideals; the friendly and knowledgeable staff; the sprawling green grounds; and the relaxed, sophisticated atmosphere. Pippin Hill is perfection.

Entirely too crowded for a Friday midday. The service was slow, and the employees seemed very unconcerned about it

This place was absolutely beautiful! The grounds are kept up very well, and they grow most of the stuff that they cook, so it's extremely fresh!! The food was fantastic, but the service was a bit slow. The wine is good, but I wouldn't say fantastic... But definitely worth the trip out there! This is by FAR the PRETTIEST winery I have visited in all of my home state of Virginia - and I've been to many, many, many!! Including Northern Va, Western, & central part of the state.. So if you're an herb enthusiast, make a plan to go!!

Amazing food and great wine. Go for the desserts. Homemade gelato is so worth it. Very unique seasonal flavors

Beautiful grounds, nice plates.

Beautiful views and good wine.

Pretty good. My wife wanted to try it out so we went and had lunch. The scenery is beautiful. The food was pretty good, but I would like a little more southern comfort type food rather than shareable/hors d'oeuvres styled fare. My wife loved her wine so we bought a couple bottles. Will probably go back again.

George Gretes

Fantastic as always. The wines are wonderful, the food is fabulous, the service is great, and the setting is beautiful. It is so nice to sit on the enclosed "porch", look down the hill, be waited on by the delightful staff, sip wine and eat the delicious treats. A real treat. Always a great place to go to. Especially during the week, this time of year when the crowds are small.

Kristine Casal

My husband and I came here on a weekday afternoon. We wanted to try the food since we've heard great things about it. The hostess, who had an awkward eye contact told us that the wait was about 45 mins for an outside seating but that there was available seating inside. It was busier than usual and we were starving so we opted for a table indoors. When we sat down, there were three or four high tops open outside that we weren't told was available (but people who came after us sat in). Our waiter was wonderful and he had great suggestions and the food definitely was worth it. The wine (we got a bottle of Petit Verdot)was average, compared to a lot of the other wines we've had around the same area. The grounds are beautiful and this is a popular winery but it is on the busier side no matter what time of the week/day. So if you enjoy quieter visits to wineries to have a great experience I would probably skip this.

Isaac Calvo

The "tapas" of cheese platter & meats was fantastic. Had a lot of flavor and great presentation. As far as the food goes their kitchen for lunch closes at 3PM. We arrived at 2:59x. The place itself is filled with lots of life and the view, location and what not is very nice. As for the wines it was ok nothing very fantastic compared to other wineries in the area. With the exception of their dessert wine. It was actually really good. Pricing is a little on the expensive side but not much different from other locations. Bottle ranges from 24-32$. Glass from 7-10$. If your up for the drive I strongly recommend to try Old House Vineyard. They had excellent wines and a nice view as well.

I was here yesterday on a wine tour with a van of 12, We felt very discouraged from even walking in the doors just bc of how large our party was. The hostess was very rude, no one had a name tag so I’m not sure who she was. Our party split up and some of our group sat on the patio and ordered cheese and meat boards, some of our party went to do wine tasting, some of our party sat on the lawn with glasses of wine. At 4:45 the same hostess came around and said they were closing at 5:15, again not the friendliest person. I also went to up to one of wait staff who was folding napkins to ask about Easter Sunday. She was very nice and helpful, then the same hostess came up and said how many would be in your party for Easter, I said 15, she Rudely said we won’t seat that many people you will just be turned away. I closed the menu I was looking at and said thank you, she continued to say you can call but we don’t allow that. This is a beautiful winery but I will not come back to a establishment where I’m not wanted. My wine tour spent well over $500 in the 45 mins we were there, probably more if this “hostess” or whoever she was wouldn’t have been so rude. I see there are other posts with people saying the same issues. I am a small business owner and I would never make a Customer feel this way.

Great wine and wonderful cheeseboard! We love spending a couple hours here whenever we’re in Charlottesville. It does get pretty crowded on the weekend, so I recommend getting their earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the rush hours.

Meredith Robinson

Beautiful views! But I came for a tasting and found it to be quite expensive. $6 +tax for only 4 wine selections and you can't even keep the glass. Wasn't a big fan of the wine (Viognier & Cab Sauv were my faves from this vineyard) As a venue for a wedding I think it would be spectacular but as fas as tastings I was underwhelmed.

valerie DeGennaro

Such a wonderful place.

Chris Demarchi

Wine was average at best. The food was good, with small portions. We also waited over an hour for a food. The views of the mountains are breathtaking! The staff had an attitude of indifference about the quality of our experience as a group, which was disappointing. I will not be going back, there are too many other quality options for wineries around Charlottesville.

Bryan Lewis

A beautiful place to sit, while you drink bland overpriced wine. It's truly unfortunate that the attention to detail and quality goes more into the environment than does go into the wine product. Our server blew through the description despite only having to serve the three of us. Just to note, for the price of three tastings we could have bought a bottle and had ~10x more wine for our dollar. I doubt we even got a full glass worth of wine between the three of us. It is regrettable that I have to give 2 stars, but as someone who loves wine, I can't bring myself to recommend this winery if your looking for quality Virginia wine.

A gorgeous venue, great service. The food, locally sourced, is outstanding. The wine us top notch. Only issue is the tasting format, compared to other wineries in the area is a little chaotic, and a bit of a free for all. But well worth the visit!

Genu Jay

Beautiful view of the mountains while enjoying a very friendly staff, Daniel and Alex, made our time very lovely. The wine was delightful and so were the grounds. Thank you for such a great experience! We will surely be back.

Stephanie McDonald

We called a month out for a friends 30th. We had arranged a day in Charlottesville for a friend and her one request was here as we come often. We were a large group and knew a tasting or table could not be accommodated, however they even told us we could not purchase wine and sit on the grounds and enjoy. Basically she said our group was not welcome. They said they have too many visitors. Wow, we were not asking for any accommodations but to purchase their wine and sit on a blanket on the lawn. The rudeness of the person on the phone was also less than appealing. We visit often for weddings, events and tastings- but this certainly was not a way to bring us back.

My boyfriend and i had our first date here at Pippen Hill 4 years ago on a friday the 13th (2015) every anniversary and every friday the 13th we come here to Pippen Hill to celebrate. We absolutely love it here, but this last time (Wed feb 13, 2019) was the BEST experience yet. All thanks to Caleb. We just want to tell him we appreciate his knowledge and thoughtfulness and truly appreciated his top notch service

Luke Tolbert

We showed up with 8 people yesterday in a Van. It was 1145am and we were turned away. We told them we didn't want to do a tasting and would just buy bottles. We also asked if our driver could simply drop us off and pick us up later. Still turned away. The logic makes zero sense that dozens of cars with 2-4 people each can get in. The website is also not descript in this requirement. Terrible service and attitude during the whole exchange. Do not believe anyone from our group will ever return. Mount Ida was more than happy to have us.

Nicholas Roberts

Beautiful vineyard and tasting room. Lovely and lively atmosphere during warm weekend afternoons. Wine is a bit pricey at $30/bottle. Attentive staff. Come during the week for a laid back, classy, and solitary feel.

Jason Barrett

The wine is just ok for now. Food is good there but just pricy. Also the wine tastes like a $10 bottle, but they charge $20. The views are one of the best though here and is their main strength.

Teresa McMasters

We recently attended a wedding at Pippin Hill. It is beautiful, overlooking the vineyards and Blue Ridge Mountains. I can't comment on the wine since I'm pregnant, but the food we had was amazing (especially the steak). Next time I'm in the area visiting my in-laws I would love to go back for a wine tasting!

Stacy Lemmon

Greg Mestre

Beautiful location and grounds. Wine selection is limited and expensive in my opinion. Wine flavor not exciting compared to other vineyards in the area without the glamor.

Larry Cox

We visited 10 wineries in the Charlottesville area and this was one of the best. They are one of the few where you can order food but you can't picnic.

Arianna Ruggeri

Great service

Shelbi Mackenzie

Drove 30 minutes out of our way to try this place on a friend's recommendation. We were turned around at the entrance and forced to leave because they were "at capacity". They need a better way to handle this or need to expand their tasting facilities.

Kurt Lewis

Judy Seraphin

We visited on 2/2/2017. The service was horrible. The venue is dangerously unlit outside. The tables and chairs are very uncomfortable. The waiter did not know how to make coffee. 20% tip required for 6 or more, calculated on wine and awful coffee. Over-hyped, over priced, underwhelming experience.

Tom Deal

We'd heard good things about the sparkling rose here so we stopped in on a weekday for a taste - wow what a beautiful place! And the staff were super friendly and accommodating to us and our pup. The sparkling rose wasn't to shabby either! We'll be back.

Michael Potter

We were doing our own winery tour in the area and Pippin Hill had been recommended to us. Upon arrival on a Saturday afternoon (around 3pm), a staff member at the entrance us that due to the number of people who were there and a wedding that was starting soon, they were at capacity and we were unable to go up to the tasting room. The staff member told us his job existed to inform people they were at capacity. They did give us a voucher in case we come back another time and they are at capacity, then we would still be allowed to enter and not be turned away a second time. Needless to say, we never got to taste the wine or see the property.

Samantha smith

Beautiful location. Excellent wines with a very friendly staff member. Didn’t eat there but the cheese plates looked good. Directions on GPS we’re trying to take us down a private drive but we figured that out. Expert tip: if you are visiting as a pair- each get one of the two tastings and share- that way you taste everything!

We reserved a table for dinner, then enjoyed sunset from the lawn. The food was great, the view was amazing, and I enjoyed the wine.

David McMasters

I came here for a wedding. What a great venue with a beautiful view of the Blue Ridge mountains. I highly recommend stopping in for some wine and enjoy the porch and view.

Kayla Driscoll

The cheese plate is delicious and the wine is good. The view is absolutely gorgeous. The service could be a little better.

Kevin Wyatt

Good wines, great service at the tasting bar. We enjoyed the beautiful area and the sites within the building. Even though there is plenty of parking and space to sit a lot of people pile up at this winery which causes Pippin to turn people away occasionally at peak times. I hear they have great food but I haven't experienced it personally. Thanks Pippin!!

Beautiful winery, good food and wines. Definitely worth the trip to take it all in.

Ridiculously uptight. Beautiful surroundings but not hospitable. Long waits for food and refusal to allow parties to share spaces on lounge chairs. Please learn to chill out. As a former Californian—visit some wineries there! You can provide opportunities to make new friends rather than subject folks to long waits. Also consider increasing your meal portion size.

Pippin Hill is just BREATHTAKING This facility was created from the ground up as a wedding venue and it shows. The grounds and building are impeccably designed down to the last detail. We were married here in June 2015 and it felt like an absolute dream. It rained during our ceremony and we held it under the patio veranda and it was SO beautiful! It was so serene, the rain was like a water feature at a spa. Not your average "plan B" location. As a bride you can be assured that you will have the most beautiful day even if there is a torrential downpour! The food and wine are EXCELLENT! We recommend the crispy fried oyster and haricot verde appetizers. The tacos were our favorite dinner item and our guests loved the pasta station. The staff is professional and friendly. The bridal suite is amazing - roomy, beautiful, and well designed so that all of your girls can get ready there with you. The only drawback is that this place is so spectacular they have the upper hand with everything! You can have anything you want so long as you are able to afford it.

Eric Hahn

The menu changes throughout the year and the staff is always helpful in providing recommendations for what meals pair well with different wines. All the items are great.

This place is beautiful, but they are way too busy and close early on Saturdays for events. We went around 3 pm and were turned away at the driveway and told to come back in 30 to 40 minutes and were guaranteed admission then. When we came back they informed us they were closing in 45 minutes. The kitchen had already closed and there was no space at any tasting bar to do a tasting. People were complaining they closed the kitchen at 3 and we could here the staff telling someone (likely a wedding party) that all the people would leave and they would have the winery to themselves. Not a pleasant experience, perhaps it would have been a better event venue or to visit on a weekday.

Seth Holt

My wife took me here for my birthday and I could not have asked for a better birthday afternoon. The winner was delicious and the tasting educational. Then we went out on the porch and had several incredible dishes along with a bottle of the wine that we enjoyed most from the tasting. The best part may have been the view, though, to be honest. It was so beautiful and relaxing. It definitely made the whole experience.

Robert Sanders

Amazing view, food is a step above, and the wine is quite good (and two kinds of sparkling offered)!

Robert Carpenter

Really amazing winery. Property is terrific. People, food, environment and product are fantastic. NEWEST VISIT 9/2019...still awesome! Getting better every time we go.

Myche Tician

Beautiful place. Good quality wines. Kitchen is suprsingly good. Slightly annoying that you can only order the wine tasting at the bar. No free tasting here. The sliders are a great deal.

Definitely one of the countries finest vineyard venues. It's all about the delicious food and the spectacular views and you can spend the night right next door at the Inn at the Crossroads and walk to the tasting room or have a scrumptuous lunch at Pippin Hill that is made from locally sourced items!
