REVIEWS OF Garden Grove Brewing and Urban Winery IN Virginia

Alicia Young

One of my favorite dog friendly breweries, with the benefit of wine!!!!

Scott Fogleman

Great local brewery in the heart of Carytown. Good place to hangout or to take a short break from shopping. Kids and pet friendly.

Arterra Wines

This place is AWESOME ! The BEST beers and cider’s ! Amazing craftsmanship & great people behind it. Great atmosphere. Wine too & non-alcoholic ginger ale which is the best i’ve had. Thus something for everyone.

Dropped by tonight for the very first time to see The Band Dreadnot. I had skipped dessert prior to arrival in hopes of getting some sort of tasty treat here. Garden Grove only has a menu of alcoholic drinks. They offer a small eight to ten pre-packaged items for snack purposes (example given: peanuts, crackers, cheese with pepperoni snack pack and etc from the grocery store, I’m unfamiliar if they have a wider variety for lunch or not?) I wasn’t too fond of the whole layout. It reminded me of the Delta Sky Lounge in Atlanta without the buffet. They have lots of board games, a couch, a tv, some large group tables (six plus person seating) Although, they didn’t offer any type solid food intake, the bartender told me I could bring take away from a separate restaurant and eat it at Garden Grove. I figured that was more than generous.

Good beer and games!

I should have known from the name "...and Urban Winery" that there was going to be a level of pretention here. I came in about 2:00 p.m. on Friday April 19th. I'm a late 40s gray-haired guy who buys and tastes a lot of beer. As I arrived, another couple walked in ahead of me, about my age. The barkeep was busy putting out stools around the tables. The tap room itself is a nice space, with plenty of seating, bright light, and a welcoming decor. The chairs are just metal stools with high tables, so not incredibly comfortable, but not bad. There is fast free Wi-Fi, and there are outlets available too, so you can plug in electronics if needed. There were also quite a few board games and diversions, as you find in hip breweries these days. The couple ahead of me ordered a couple beers off the menu, and it seemed they were not that familiar with the styles. The bartender did not seem that helpful in guiding them, just pushing them towards the helles as a default for someone who was not well versed in craft. The couple sat down to enjoy their beers, and I stepped to the bar and ordered a flight. The barkeep was all business, just wanting to know what to pour. I got my flight and settled down with my laptop to do some work and enjoy the beers. I found one good beer (the fruit bomb IPA), one I really did not care for (False Idol IPA), and two that were just okay. I planned to get another flight and sample the rest of the crew. The problem is there was loud death metal music blaring the entire time I was there. The couple who got the helles - left as soon as they finished their beer, complaining about the music. While I was there, another lady popped her head in the door - I think mainly to get out of the rain - but after hearing the music, she decided not to stop in. Another group of three walked in, a couple in their '50s with an older lady. They were specifically coming here to try glass of wine. They stepped in the tap room, checked out the beer and wine board, heard the music and decided this was not the place for them. After about 30 minutes there total, I couldn't take it any longer. I finished my flight and cashed out. I then went across the street and down a block to Thirsty Joe's, where I had several more beers, and took a bunch home with me. Check out my review of Joe's as well, it's really good. This was my first visit to Garden Grove, and my last. Really nice tap room, but the beers were nothing to write home about, and it seemed the music was purposefully deployed to make anyone above hipster age feel unwelcome.

Wouter Deconinck

No food, just good beer. Lively brewing company with great selection of about 10 craft beers.

Brenda Jackson

Great bartender service, excellent band/live music& friendly crowd.

Josh M.K.

Good beer and excellent service. Ask John the bartender on Wednesdays to sing you some opera between trivia rounds.

Joseph Casey

Alton Ayer

Great Ginger ale.

Brian Nuss

Nice brewery with inviting staff and a great selection of craft beers.

Griffin Lutterbein

Very knowledgeable bartenders. They really care about the beer they make. No food here but it's friendly to outside food and pets. Plus you will get beer here you won't find anywhere else.

Shane Scallan

Great Brewery! Loved the environment for friends to get together and have a few cold ones. The staff is awesome. If you have any questions on the beers themselves or recommendations on what is good the staff is very knowledgeable. They have a great variety of beer and even a few sparklers which I would recommend for someone starting craft beer drinking or your girlfriend you dragged out for the night.

Mippy Thunder

I was not impressed by their beer or their snacks. I like that they have a game night on Monday nights. Good game selection and cozy seating area. Cool place and good staff, just not for me.

Phil Hoffman

Marcus Wells

We came for the beer and stayed for the friendly staff, if you are going to pay them a visit you absolutely must try the house Ginger Ale... In a word, amazeballs!

Thomas Leonard

I love the location and I always feel comfortable here, but I never quite fall in love with their beer.

Lynn Black

The beer and wine selection was awesome!

Will Brennan

Wil Bowman

Cool place with helpful staff. The beer is good, and they keep their growlers in the cooler. Parking is on the street, so it can be tough. Good selection of a wide variety of brews and wines. Prices are par for the course. Atmosphere is warm and inviting.

D. Wiens

Great place, great service! Most importantly, great beers! Tried the Smoked Porter and the Scarlet Brown - both unique but not crazy you can't finish a draft (or 2). Loved it!

Private Private

Not the least bit impressed. Basic beer. Good for people who know nothing about brew, I guess. Think the highest IBU they had was 60. Not complicated. Straight basic.

Gabriel Pearson

This place is fantastic!!!the service was incredible and the atmosphere was on point. Best local micro brewery in town.a must in rva!

Andrew Fournier

Awesome beer

Matt Harvey

Best place to take your dog, they let them inside. They usually have some sort of local music. They have a bunch of board games. The bar stools are screwed to the floor. They have a ton of bruise on tap. also this is where I learned my girlfriend likes to be physical by slapping me in the face..lol she was just playing so she says.

Azhar Ahmed

Good (not great) beer, tough to find parking, did not get a chance to try their wine.

Tom Vest

Best all round!

Keith Knudsen

Great beers, informed staff

Ian DeBoeser

Julian May

Gets crowded fast but seriously one of the best trivia nights in the city.

Carol Farmer

GG is the best! We love the staff, drinks, music, and games. There is a big selection of beers, with a less than typical selection. There brew a variety of new and exciting beers that don't cave in to the latest brewing trends. Plus, they make a mean non-alchoholic ginger ale.

Erwin Will

They brew really good beer that they change regularly. You can bring in your own food since they do not serve their own. They are also dog friendly.

Sean Solarte

Nice relaxed place, good to stop in for a few drinks while visiting carytown.

Broderick Thomas

Great staff...great beers!

Hector Quinonez

Really cool spot with great people all around. The beer is very good and the bluegrass jam session made for an awesome and different experience

Holly Gerke

Stayed overnight in Richmond to stop at 3 breweries. Garden Grove was our favorite of the 3. Beer selection was unique - as their web site states "Art in a glass". The best part - all the beer we tried including the NA ginger ale was awesome. Bravo Garden Grove. If you get hungry, get take out from the kebab place a couple doors down - chicken shawarma mmm mmm!

Mike Delaney

Chocolate stout ok. Not all beers on untapped

Garrett S

Great beer and an awesome atmosphere. They have arcade machines and board/card games, and you can bring in food. Wide variety of seating - bar seats, big table, small sitting area, small tables, outside beer garden. Staff is cool too! Their farmhouse saison is one of the best I've had in the area

Maxwell Kanczuzewski

Balling. Nuff said

Courtney Rose

Staff is soooo nice! Flights are fun!

that boi

Good beer free arcade games and nice people it is a model modern brew bar located smack in the middle of carytown

Bill Rippe

Great beer and thanks so much for the tour!

Tom Belden

Great small brewery with many unique offering s including A Sparkling Honey Wine A great Farmhouse Saison Lots of styles of good beer!

Mike Hall

Not a terrible place to get some beers.

Julie Proctor

Liked the drafts we had, would go back

Joe Racette

Low key, good choice of beers.

Frank Hernandez

Easy place to relax and play games while you try truly unique beer and wine.

J Strawn

A stupid name, but that’s my opinion and also the only negative thing I have to say about this shining example of people caring about delivering an excellent product! I can’t even begin to describe how surprised I was to have a flawless Helles and Czech Pils. Wasn’t a fan of the farmhouse saison, but it was a different take that didn’t suit my taste preference. The Schwartzbier is proof that black is beautiful doesn’t just apply to people. Collusion imperial stout is a nice lower ABV stout that has a depth of character larger than The Godfather and makes me want to commit some white collar crimes. Well done, peeps! I shall return!

Scott Waller

Always a good crowd and great beer. Ryan and Mike you guys have done great. I enjoy it every time.

Adrian Sewell

Great atmosphere, family friendly, arcade machines in the back for kids. Good IPA

VA Brewery Tours

Few things we are reviewing here. First the team, JP / Mike / Ryan / Will / Jesse / etc really great folks who are passionate about the product and the company. Now the beer, I mean you have a large list to choose from, every taste bud if you can't find something that works for you well..... you know.... that's on you. The flagship Saison is bomb. We operate tours and special events there all the time and have always had an excellent time. Top five in the city, no doubt.

Mark Mancil

Tauryn Lafelle

Love to get my drink on at this establishment. The fine folks here make drinking a religious experience. I grew up in N"Awlins and this reminds me of home

Richard Pagano

Imperial Choco stout. That’s where it’s at. Big chocolate and toast flavors. Super tasty. Check it out for sure. The career suicide ipa was tasty as well.

Ian McEwan

I love the selection of non IPA beers as an alternative to other local brewery if I am in the mood for other styles.

Bianca Taylor

Felt a bit unwanted. When I asked a question about the wine, the girl’s response was very cold and condescending

Paige Reisenfeld

Great selection of beers, and the prices are decent. Love the tables and the Game Center in the back - board games and an old arcade machine with over 600 games on it.

darryl witherspoon

Great band, and Karla the barmaid is just as attentive as she is beautiful...and believe me...she's gorgeous! Give em a try!

Sean Savage

A very fun brewery! Very knowledgeable and hospitable staff with some unique options (not just your typical Richmond IPA and pale ale!).

Jen C

Nice little selection of brews and wines, definitely worth a stop if you're in careytown!

John Parrish

Good place right in Carytown to hang while the wife and daughter go clothes shopping dad. Jus sayn! The really do have great variety of styles -not just an bunch of IPAs.

Josh Starliper

On a date night and needed a little local flavor. Stopped in and it was very chill. Aiden(sp?) served us and was very knowledgeable and welcoming. The 2 beers i tried were quite good and my wife had their 2 cider options which were also very tasty. A true gem in a city known for excellent craft beverages.

Ric Bergstrom

Great variety of craft beers. Fun nightly events and some special events too. The Tuesday bluegrass Jam is one of the best.

Tom Townes

Good. Just ignore the bartender attitude. I'd still go back.

Kim Kremer

Wonderful!!!

Joey Mirabile

The place was crowded, nut understandably do. The spice trade had a nice rye flavor. Yum

John Chukayne

Pretty good beer. Relaxed atmosphere. Perfect place to stop off for a quick beer while exploring carytown.

William Murphy

Mark Hodson

Highly recommend! Great selection and friendly staff!

High InternationalBitteringUnits

Beers aren't bad. Don't want to rate lower than 4 stars just yet. Music scene on the patio looks inviting

Peter Davey

Good atmosphere and location however the beers aren't that good. For me on untappd they consistently score below a 3. There are much better breweries in RIC.

Izaiah Marroquin

Samantha Drake

Well-informed and friendly staff, delicious brews, and an atmosphere that can't be beat. They let dogs hang out on the patio, and this is my new favorite place.

Parth Vader

The little devil beer is really good

Lillian Wall

Came during Cultural Crawl!!! Great beer, great service and great atmosphere!

Eric Ganko

Dog friendly, helpful staff, nice beer selection.

Audias Armstrong

Good selection of beers, ciders, wines and meads

ML Howell

Good beer. As always, parking in Carytown is a pain!

Gavin Edmunds

This place is always great, great staff, great beers and always something new to try.

Berkeley Brandt

Fantastic beer and service.

Jennifer C

Beautiful little brewery with a corrugated tin ceiling and wood accents. Oh yeah, the beer is good, too! They have two sparkling wines on tap if you don't like beer.

Chuck Hughes

Drinkable beers. Great location.

Chad Williams

They have live music sometimes so check their website or facebook page.

Kevin Bomher

Awesome brewery right in Carytown. Quick, friendly service and a sizable tasting room. Certainly worth a stop if you're in the neighborhood and in need of refreshment.

Bridget Ritchey

Christopher Sarnoski

Fantastic selection of beers, it feels like every time that we come in there is something new to try on the board. There is always something going on, whether it's game night, trivia, a bluegrass jam or one of the amazing monthly beer dinners. Definitely a must try spot.

James Parry

Fantastic brewery with an ever changing and evolving beer menu!

Gary Wood

Just a quick stop. The farmhouse saison hit the spot on a hot day.

Jonathan Douglas

First time in Cary Town and explored everything and ended up here for cold one. Very nice staff and great people stopped in who were regulars. The beer was really great. Many choices and twist on very familiar styles. They are more than happy to let you taste before you buy. They even brew their own ginger ale. Heading back next to Cary town and plan on stopping in and maybe getting a Growler to Go!!!!

Andi Viar

Friendly staff, nice atmosphere, great decor! The bartenders are super patient and willing to help narrow down a beer for you!

Cami McCue

Excellent craft brews and meads!! Great place to hang with your dogs as well!!

Alex W

Best local brewery in Richmond. You can bring your own food or order from Carytown restaurants that will deliver to your table.

Daniel Goodman

A great place. Arcade machines and board games for you and your friends. Great atmosphere, very cool decor (shout out to the ghostbusters painting), awesome location that is close to everything in carytown. The beer is creative flavorful and varied. And its only the 4th brewery in VA to also make their own wine! Awesome place to visit.

Jerome Jackson

Jessica Weindl

Awesome place to hang out with friends and have some great beer. A really relaxed environment that makes you feel comfortable and the bar tenders are super friendly. They even have a bunch of fun board/card games you can play, and a couple old school arcade games. They also have a great space you can reserve for free if you want to have a party, a friend had a birthday party here and it was awesome!

Ian Havener

Very laid-back atmosphere with good wine and ciders although limited they were very good. My wife enjoyed the green dragon IPA.

Ian Davis

Not super friendly, good beer, lousy wine pours.

Jeb Bjorn

Great beers, excellent staff!

Kyle H

Great beer

Daniel Folkes

Love this place. Very chill and the trivia nights are great.

Paul Leeger

Great beer!! Great people!!

Andrew Durrette

Great atmosphere!

Evan Nelson

The space is welcoming and the staff were friendly. They had a wide selection of beers and a small but tasty set of wines. This restaurant rotates chefs; I personally did not care for the one they had the day we went, but the food could be different the next time if another chef is working it. I would call it a "fun experience" worth trying, but this would not be a favorite place for me, both because there's no way to predict if the food will be of interest any given day and because I wasn't fond of their beers and meads.

Derek R. Austin

Yes! Love it. Except the name, which should be Carytown Brewing Company. Because duh. Did you know you can bring your own food, like takeout from next door, inside? And gluten free sparkler options

Hannah Choueke

Awesome place, staff and beer

Meredith Webber

Incredible selection of beers and exceptional quality. Brew master Mike is incredibly knowledgeable, creative, and skilled at his craft and produces some of the finest beers I've had (and I'm a huge beer snob.) The brewery is a great size, has lots of fun weekly events such as trivia, live music, game night, as well as comedy night once a month and other theme nights. a great spot in Carytown for singles, couples, and families alike! The brewery is also a great venue for parties and personal events.

Zachary Parker

Great products along with friendly and knowledgeable staff. Having beer, wine, and fantastic non-alcoholic ginger beer make it easy for any group.

Adam Bailey

I went in to try Death on the day of its release. I was immediately greeted by an awful smell instead of the two bearded hipsters tending bar. I was ignored for two minutes so I left. This was a total juxtaposition from any other brewery I've been to.

Ed Shepherd

Nice place to pop in and get a drink... There is something for everyone.

p s201

Good craft brews, friendly bartender with the longest beard, Jessie!

Benjamin Judah

Nice brews, decent selection, great space

Ryan Alloway

Chuck Dougherty

Live jazz by the Blues Project was great and the ginger ale on tap is terrific. Danced the night away.

john paul

AWESOME BEERS!!! Something here for every taste including a lot of really unique brews: barrel-fermented, Belgian-inspired, gluten-free... In-depth tasting notes/ingredient lists for every brew, perfect for tasting flights. The staff is a crew of beer nerds, but they're friendly & fun to talk with. Comfortable and unpretentious space with a great little patio in nice weather. Family & pet-friendly. In case it's still not obvious, I love this place! Favorite brewery in town, which says a lot in Richmond these days.

Darlene Brunzell

Love this place. Mike Brandt brewmaster cut his teeth on wine and has applied his skills to creative craft brew fermentation and has now expanded the brewery into slash winery...and the Arterra collab has produced some fantastic wine.
