REVIEWS OF Early Mountain Vineyards IN Virginia

Andrew Mercer

Had a nice tasting of multiple wines and one of the best Reuben sandwiches I've ever tasted. Our party had a great time and stayed quite a few hours. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The inside is also very wide open so you never feel cramped even if it's crowded

Jesse Mack

Great scenery, but over priced. The place looks wonderful inside and out. Not a fan of being asked to tip after a tasting.

Migdaliz Bernier

Wonderful wines, beautiful property, and outstanding service even when busy. One of the best in Virginia!

Early Mountain has five estate wines, and then they fill their menu with wines from other Virginia vineyards. They have one white, one rose, and three red wines. There are two options for tasting them all, they have traditional wine tasting of their wines or wine flight of four of the wines. We did the wine flight, and just bought a glass of the fifth wine to have with some food. They have a fairly large food menu, but our server mentioned that we could get half their Artisanal Cheese Board and half their Artisanal Charcuterie Board which was the perfect mix. We also had the Burrata with our flight and it made for a perfect lunch.

Came here after getting a recommendation from a local B&B we were staying at. The winery is gorgeous, and everything started out great. We got 2 flights, and a local cheese and meat sampler. Delicious. What made us decide on a 1 star review was the service. It was that bad. Our server was the blonde woman with the British accent. She brought us our flights, and we basically never saw her again. The tables all around us were served promptly and professionally, however we were left with an ever dwindling bottle of water on a 100° July day wondering were or server was so we could order some food and drink. This was even after I ordered the flights saying, we'll have the flights and cheese sampler for starters, then we'd like to order some food. The server at the tables around us was constantly at tableside, asking if anyone needed water, or would like to even try another flight. I actually had to go inside the winery looking for our server. Finally finding her, I asked if the cheese sampler was enough to share between 2 people, as it's $24, roughly the price of 2 of their entrees. First she said no, then when I said well OK, I'll look at the menu to decide on something else, she suddenly changed her mind and said it was definitely enough for 2 to split. OK, I ordered it. I got 2 slices of cheese, a dollop of ricotta, and slice or two of apricot with a basket of bread. Don't get me wrong, it was absolutely delicious, and I don't ever mind paying for quality, but it was not for 2 people. At $24, it was barely enough for 1, and our server said it was "definitely" enough for 2. And that's not even the end of her terrible service. After we finished our wine, water, cheese, everything, and were sweating out in the sun, we couldn't find her to ask for the check. After what seemed like ages, she appeared after clearing another table. We asked for the check, and she was gone again. We saw her again maybe 10 minutes later to run food to another table, but not to give us the check as she just walked back inside after. Thank God we happened to have 2 water bottles with us and that there was a water fountain inside. Finally, she came with the check, and then stood right over us as we were selecting her tip on the iPad they use for payment at the table. She honestly stood there watching us, looking at what tip we wanted to select. When we tried to politely and casually make it known that we would like a moment without her hovering there, all she did was move to the other side of the table. Who does that? So, to wrap it up, great Vineyard, great wine and food and view of the grounds while you eat. But if you sit down and you get this server, just leave, your time and money are better spent elsewhere.

Brian McHugh

Great wine gorgeous views.

Rita Perfater

Classy winery worth visiting. The nosh is tasty and pairs nicely with the wines and scenery. I have been visiting here for years and it doesn't disappoint.

Allen Sutton

Doug Smith

Beautiful venue. Flights feature both EMV wines and rotating selections from other VA wineries. One of the few wineries that also offer meals. Estate wines are getting better, but are not the best in the Monticello AVA, even though they are priced that way.

Karen Simco

Love it!!

Robert Reyes

Great wine & beautiful scenery. Highly recommended. We went in August so, the weather was perfect.

Thomas Coyne

Wonderful food, great service. Very cheerful waiters.

Kelly Skinner

A bit more expensive than others in the area but it's worth a stop. The food is really good.

R C

Delivered quite a few wedding cakes to this beautiful venue over the past few years. The area is scenic. Perfect for a destination event. Still need to take the time to come out for a tasting!

After a fantastic weekend getaway at the nearby Getaway House, we popped by Early Mountain Vineyards with the doggo to check out this winery. Actually prior to driving out to our getaway, we picked up some meats at a butcher shop and selected an Early Mountain Vineyards Chardonnay. We liked it, so we thought it would be great to check out the winery and some other wines. The staff were very friendly and set up a table for us and our dog on their patio, and they even brought over a water bowl for him. After perusing the wine and food menu, we settled on their rosé and a halloumi salad to start. The halloumi salad was divine. Halloumi, heirloom tomatoes, and peaches sat on a bed of arugula and basil salad, alongside toasted sourdough. The rosé was a nice complement to the salad dish. Early Mountain's 2017 Rosé has strawberry and white tea notes on the nose with a nice long finish on the palate. Afterwards, we decided to share the ricotta gnocchi and a bottle of the Eluvium 2014 (76% Merlot, 19% Petit Verdot, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon). The ricotta gnocchi was lovely with roasted heirloom tomatoes, bacon lardons, crispy garlic, and parmesan. The wine paired very well with this dish! The Eluvium 2014 is a very easy summer red that has cherry notes. This winery has so many accolades. They were awarded five gold medals in the 2018 Virginia Governor's Cup, as well as a Governor Case's spot with their Eluvium 2015. The Eluvium 2014 we had at the winery was one of those five gold medals. Fantastic wines, knowledgeable staff, and beautiful grounds. What more can you ask for in a winery?

R. Bates

Very neat inside, with a great back serving patio.

Chris Lloyd

excellent place to visit! wine and food are outstanding!

Ann Neeriemer

Snacks were good and the 'flight' concept with the tastings was interesting but way overpriced at $12 for 4 tastes. Staff was friendly. Wine was OK but not great.

Dan Jones

Great wine and fantastic food. Thoroughly enjoyed the pimento cheese and the BLT sandwich. Had a large group that they accommodated with ease, especially coordinating all of the different wine flights which we ordered. The facility was also gorgeous, and the back area was dog friendly.

Melissa Barron

I enjoyed my wine tasting experience at Early Mountain Vineyards. I can only rate four stars though because I wanted to try a sweet wine and they do not produce or sell any sweet wines. I was very impressed with the decor and the variety of rooms to explore. I recommend that individuals who enjoy try wines visit Early Mountain. It was a nice touch that they let tasters keep a stemless glass to take home.

Overview: if you’re planning an event or get together, this venue may be a good option. But if you’re looking for a memorable and unique tasting experience, you can skip this vineyard. Absolutely beautiful venue - I could imagine weddings or receptions being perfect here. It’s also very easy to get to - just a few minutes off 29. I was not impressed with the wines; $14 for a tasting 6 wine tasting (significantly smaller pours compared to other tasting rooms in the region). None of the wines were standouts or even memorable, really. The customer service experience left much to be desired; admittedly the woman who served me was new to the vineyard, so she didn’t know how to answer many of my questions. I didn’t try any food or take table service, but given the price and lackluster wines I don’t feel compelled to return.

Susan Eggleston

We had a lovely time at a recent wedding at the Early Mountain Vineyard. Staff was very professional and the facility is clean and beautiful.

Early Mountain Vineyards was the most breathtaking wedding venue! My fiance and I toured quite a few of the local Charlottesville wedding locations, but we knew as soon as we stepped into Early Mountain that we would be making the reservation before we left. We worked with Abigail Schwab and Sara Markham- both ladies went above and beyond to make us feel at ease for our July 13, 2018 wedding. I felt no hesitations that we would be thoroughly taken care of during the months leading up to our wedding. Both of these ladies responded promptly to any emails and calls I made throughout the planning process (and you know- this is SO important when planning a massive party!) The grounds at Early Mountain Vineyard are truly stunning. You are given the choice between having your wedding ceremony outside encircled by a magical backdrop of rolling hills and flowers (my personal dream) OR creating a romantic candlelit indoor ceremony in the reception hall. With twin stone mantelpieces, castle chandeliers, and dreamy windows- the reception hall is a dream-come-true for any bride. The venue is so beautiful that ornate decorations are rather unnecessary- just add some greenery and candles and you are good to go! Did I mention how lovely the cocktail hour is in the tasting room? Comfy chairs, tables, and couches sprawl across the room in a beautiful layout. Our friends and families felt comfortable and were easily able to spread out and catch up while Alex and I stole away to EMV’s secret barn for sunset pictures! Speaking of sunset pictures----this was one of the main reasons I wanted to have my wedding at Early Mountain Vineyards! They have rustic, but manicured barns for photos! One of the barns is set on top of a hill so that the pictures have the view of the sun slipping behind the mountains- SO romantic! Early Mountain is the place to get married if you don’t want to worry about the weather (SO many options for ceremony and reception placement- and all of them are stunning!). The small details (like lighting packages, firepits, and farm tables) are the best! Plus- wonderful staff who are helpful and friendly throughout the entire planning process! If I had the chance to change anything about my wedding- I would still choose Early Mountain Vineyards every single time! Love, Sarah & Alex

This has the best ambiance and view out of most of the vineyards on this "wine trail." We had great customer service and everyone was really friendly and prompt with helping us. Their food was very good. Wine was okay. Out of the two flights we got, only two wines were really excellent. The ambiance and friendly staff impressed us the most.

HUGE THANX To MELISSA and Support Staff!! Rented the Wine Library for a social with white, red and rose wines and charcuterie for 50 people. It was a huge hit with all who attended. HIGHLY recommend winery and venue location. Melissa took care of everything I needed before and during the event. I have also visited the winery with friends several times and enjoy their vast selection for wine tasting and food.

If you're looking for wines that are among the best in VA look no further. President's Day Weekend turned into the Monticello Wine Weekend for my husband and I. Early Mountain was the standout, out of 7 vineyards. We like big, earthy, tannic reds and this winery does those expertly. We particularly enjoyed the Novum 2014, 2015, Eluvium 2015, and the Aylor 2014. We liked them so much we joined the wine club. We stayed for lunch and had the potato leek soup with gnocchi and the endive salad. With the views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, warm atmosphere, fantastic wines, and delicious food Early Mountain is an absolute must!

BEAUTIFUL PLACE nice place to go have a quiet relaxing lunch

Karla Pfleeger

This is our favorite winery! It's beautiful inside and outside and the staff is incredibly nice. Every wine is good; even though we prefer reds, the whites are wonderful, too. The food is also delicious. This is the only winery where they have gotten everything right, which is pretty amazing.

Bradley Hallier

Nice wine tasting experience.

Philip Shea

Beautiful tasting room, pretty good wine, great staff!

Chris Osswald

Absolutely beautiful facility. They had the best rosé and chardonnay I've ever had from a Virginia winery. I went for the first time on Friday, and we met the CEO in the parking lot. He was so nice, I decided to come back on Sunday for brunch.

Dawn Baker

It's pretty enough but the wine was bland and way too expensive for its lack of flavor

Kyle Payne

Delicious wine tasting in a beautiful environment, one of the prettiest views of any area wineries. Super friendly staff, and a dog-friendly open area in the back!

Dorothy Rice

Horrible service, the server came with the food and started yelling who got this and this, never took away any dishes or glasses away from table, didn't bring one of the guest their flight. When we mentioned the bad service and ask to speak to a manager no one ever came. When it came time to pay we had to tell the server what we had he did not know. The building was beautiful as were the grounds. However, the owner should spend time training the staff. Poor service at such a lovely place means bad management.

Arrived at 5:34 PM. We had driven down from the mountains to catch this winery before closing. Posted hours were open until 6. They curtly refused to serve their tasting menu, which consists of only 5 wines. There was no one else in line, except for the 2 of us. They were concerned that we would not be finished by closing at 6. At 5 wine tastes, that is a completely unfounded fear. Businesses can choose to have the customers leave through their doors happy or not. I have traveled extensively in Northern California and Europe wine-tasting, never having been treated this way. They have a long way to go for a world-class wine-tasting experience. Pass this one by.

Amanda Robinson

Not only is this a beautiful place, they have a fantastic selection of wine.

AdrianGenae Finney

Lovely Ambience and atmosphere food was good. We had short rib sandwich and the blue cheese salad. Service was great. Wine was okay...... didn't buy any bottles but did the tasting.

Erick Torres

Beautiful place. Attentive and knowledgeable staff. The wines didn't really impress me, but they were not bad either. Tried the apple pie from their restaurant menu and loved it! Afterwards, my wife and I went out back to enjoy the view and loved the outdoor fireplace and fire pits since it was a little chilly out.

Karla Quintana

One of our favorite wineries, we've been members for years. Beautiful grounds, good wines and great food.

Brian Grady

Wonderful setting both inside and outside. Some of the wines are pretty good. Its all about the ambiance, though: get a bottle, take it outside, enjoy a cheese plate or some olives and watch the clouds, or whatever you like to do. They have some cool events here as well.

Heather Lamont

Beautiful winery and great wine. The tasting room is gorgeous and staff was very informative. Will definitely be back!

George Link

Ambiance was great, food was fabulous, and service was fantastic. Highly recommend.

Beautiful main tasting room, great views and excellent friendly staff

Great food made. Great wine. Beautiful setting. Wine is organic I believe.

Jordan O'Connell

Beautiful winery and amazing wines! Love visiting this place.

Bevin Biddick

Love this place inside and out. We have been members for several years and we like that their club is quarterly instead of monthly. They have pick up parties each quarter to encourage you to pick up your wine in person. The parties typically include food, music, and the wine maker serves you your tasting of your quarterly wine selection. They have indoor and outdoor fire places. They have a menu that is always changing featuring local produce and meats. Large indoor and outdoor spaces. Kid friendly outdoors. Very friendly staff. You can ask for a tasting of almost anything if they have it open. It's a peaceful getaway for us and well worth the trip from northern Virginia.

Moshe Landman

Comfortable setting. Beautiful wines. The best in the area

Les Wiegers

Amazing wine, decor, facilities, staff. This place is a gem. The food offerings on the patio are also superb. Highest possible recommendations. Highlight of our wine tour that day! Liked it so much I joined as a member.

James Urban

Fantastic experience. All employees bent over backwards to accommodate us. Wine was best we had in VA.

Austin Graff

On the way back from Charlottesville and DC, my wife and I relied on Yelp for a good winery. Early Mountain Vineyard is just off the highway so we decided to stop here for a quick tasting. Despite a 4 star rating on Yelp, we were super disappointed. It's $10 per tasting, which is decent in the DC area. However, the staff were the least friendly I've ever met at a winery. The guy doing our tasting was super cold and didn't interact or give us any history behind the wine. He would literally pour the wine and tell us the name and then frown and walk away. It was so bizarre! The wine itself wasn't good. The standout was the Rose, but even that wasn't the best. Two things that were positive: The space is beautiful and looks the most like a Napa Valley winery. That's probably why people gave it good reviews on Yelp. They also give you a free wine glass, which was nice! Despite that, I still give it 2 stars on Yelp.

Misty Rice

way too overpriced and ALL the servers ignored me.

Martin

The wine was ok; the ambience and the view were far better than most vineyards. The staff was kind and helpful. Would like to return someday for dinner in their fabulous dining hall.

Paul Graves

Wine is colorful and full of character. The food is well prepared; portions are small. Location is beautiful. Service was inattentive and slow.

My husband and I got married at EMV this past weekend (12/15/17) and I have nothing but glowing reviews about both the venue and the amazing event staff. Sara and Abigail handled our event and they did an outstanding job. We chose to go a non-traditional route with some vendors and details for our big day and the crew was very accommodating. We received so many compliments from our guests over how breathtaking EMV is and I couldn't agree more! If you are looking for a stunning venue with an exceptional staff -- look no further!

Greatly winery and great Sunday tasting. Diane was our person and she was great!

Easily one of the best wineries I've been to from Virginia north to Maine. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Crisp clean complex whites and complex 'thinking' reds that an entire conversion could be centered around. What a great experience and a beautiful tasting room!

Wonderful place for a wedding. Beautiful scenery with a friendly staff.

Fantastic winter afternoon at a beautiful, professionally operated vineyard in Virginia's wine country. Looking forward to returning in the summer!

Susanna Simmons

Beautiful scenery good food and wine

Went there with the family for mothersday. We stood at the bar for a long time waiting to order while none of the staff showed any interest in talking to us or informing us as to why we were waiting. After being ignored like that we will not be returning.

Lisa Curtis

It was raining outside. We brought a small dog and was carrying her in. We were greeted by 2 staff members. One asked did we want a table. We said, can we have our dog in here. He said the dog can be on the patio. As we started to go through to the patio the hostess stopped us and curtly asked that we walk around in the rain through the grass to the patio! We left. We will never be back and will share our awful experience with all of our friends.

Great spot in the world. Good wine and nice selection for lunch

Michael Kelly

Decent wines and a nicely designed tasting room. There was plenty of areas to walk around and enjoy the scenery

Tom Pinckney

The wine: great that they have an assortment of Virginia wine available. The Early Mountain wines were ok but I like other area wines more. The setting: beautiful tasting room and country setting. Reminds me of Sonoma tasting rooms. The food: surprisingly good, perhaps worth a trip in its own right.

Juan Fernandez

Wine seem to have not much of a distinctive flavor, the tasting area was too crowded; perhaps a restaurant with its own wines a better label than a winnery.

Nikki Burns

It's been just over a month since our wedding and I so want to go back and do it all over again! It was a fairytale. We had looked at about 5 other venues before EMV. BUT I had already seen pictures of EMV and had my heart set on it, so the other places really didn't stand a chance. We drove down from Annapolis Maryland to check out the vineyard and I had mentally signed the contract as we drove up before we even parked. Everything from the manicured lawn with beautiful flowers, the vastness of the vineyard and the rolling hills, to the stone and brick on the main building, was enough for me... Then you walk inside and you're done..."where's the contract!?" It's 5 stars in every area (except value). To be clear, the place is absolutely amazing and breathtaking and the service you'll get from Maggie and Delores is top notch and incredibly professional and super responsive (and we asked a ton of questions via email - all answered right away), but the price tag is quite steep. With that said, if you have the budget to go for it, you won't be disappointed. We heard from several quests at our wedding that it was the most beautiful wedding they had even been to. Of course, as a bride who worked for over a year on this day, that was music to my ears, and the location is largely what made the wedding as beautiful as it was.

Mark Elliott Miller

Beautiful venue for celebrations. White wines are not great and have screw tops. We didn't try reds but they made a better presentation in corked bottles. Two bands at summer solstice festival were outstanding. Definitely worth a visit if there is a special event.

Kara Fossett

Drove over 2 hours for the oyster festival. Pulled up and the young man said they were over capacity. I called the establishment and a lady named Melissa answered the phone I asked to speak to the manager or person in charge of the festival, she responded that she was that person. I asked her why would you have on your website that tickets were available at the door if they were not. She answered and said They posted on their social media outlets that there were only 100 tickets available at the door. I let her know that that was not the case on her website, she then asked someone I believe standing next to her to check the website after we continued our conversation she still had no answer for me as to why they did not post that on their website. I then explained to her that I drove over two hours for the festival she did not offer any regrets or apologies she simply replied that they were at capacity and it was a safety hazard. I was sitting in their entrance and noticed a few cars driving away. So I asked her since there are people leaving was that still the case? She responded those people came in and enjoyed themselves and left. I once again asked her does that mean you are still at capacity? She then they responded that they were out of food. On the website it says that they are open till five, so I asked her does that mean that people are still able to come in? She then said that no more people were allowed on the premises because they had met their quota of people allowed in their facilities for the day. Doesn’t that mean that you should post on your website that you are closed for the day? She then responded by saying they had already met their quota for the day. She never offered any alternatives, perhaps we can offer you some wine or come in and see our facilities....nothing! I find it hard to believe that they ran out of wine at a vineyard, food yes but wine? I would have felt better after the drive if she had at least apologized or offered some alternatives or suggestions since we we had driven so far. The only reason I have given one star is because it is necessary to give at least one star in order to post the review.

Can't really speak to this place wine-wise--we each got a glass of the Five Forks white blend, and it was fine, nothing special. In terms of customer service, though, I was pretty disappointed. I took a coworker here for her birthday, and our boss very kindly called them a couple of days before and asked them to set aside a gift card for us to pick up upon our arrival. We came in and went straight to the tasting table to nab the card, and had to wait for someone to attend to us, despite it not being super busy. When a woman finally noticed us, we explained what we were looking for, and she looked at us like we were nuts, asked another colleague who reacted similarly, and then suggested we check at the other bar. The email from our boss had been very specific about where the card was, but we headed over to the other bar any way, only to be told that it was definitely at the main tasting bar. So, we headed back, and, after explaining what the others had said, they proceeded to wait on 3 more people--NOT ones who had been in line or anything before we came up, but just couples who wandered up while we were waiting to be helped--before bothering to check around for our gift. Finally, one of them stopped waiting on other customers, smacked her forehead, and loudly exclaimed my coworker's name--"Oh yeah! It's right here!" and handed us the card, which had been behind her the entire time. Apparently this was the same woman who had taken the order two days prior, yet moments after our request shared skeptical glances with her coworker. If this is how they handle a simple gift card, I can't imagine how they manage weddings. Charlottesville has an abundance of vineyards that consistently demonstrate excellent customer service--Loving Cup and Glass House, for instance--I won't be returning to this one.

Linda Cramer

Setting is lovely, have eaten there before, however Friday was a disaster. My friend and I ordered a salad. It appeared as day old lettuce and the chick peas were quite interesting. They were obviously dried out and old, not meaty and delicious. When we had eaten less and 1/2 and asked for our check we told the waitress how disappointed we were. Her comment as she smiled, I can tell you didn't like it for you didn't eat much!!!!!!. Case closed, doubt if I have lunch there again

Taras Galkovsky

Amazing service: manager went above and beyond of making sure we had a great time at this winery. And Rose was actually quite good! Hope to be back soon.

Doug Menezes

This is a great vineyard that we have been members of for the last few years now. They are located in the country side with mountains in the background. Their wines are really good and we have enjoyed spending time at the winery every time we've visited. The staff is very friendly and over time have gotten to know us. They have a really good chef as well and offer excellent hor d'oeuvres on their menu and special menus at member events.
