Where to begin, lets start with the atmosphere. The atmosphere is more in line with a brewery than a winery since the apple wine tastes like a cider. It was difficult to distinguish between the white blend and Chard.. The location is great if you have 4 wheel drive but not recommended for higher end sports cars, do not bring a Porshe or a Jag you will regret it. This facility and product seems to cater more to the masses like disneyland instead of being a contender in the VA wine phenom. The reason for 2 stars and not one is the friendly staff and the misdirected pride in a lesser product.

Tom Brandenburg

Not the friendliest staff. Wine is a typical NVA wine - just nominally.

The views and wine is outstanding. Lovely place to visit.

The wine was very good as was the venue itself. On the negative side, some of the employees give this place a snobby vibe. I'm not one to complain about paying high $ values for food, especially If you are paying for high quality and an excellent location; the $ value is expected. The cheese and meats plate is a joke. It's expensive and you might get a total of 5 bites. The staff recommended ordering the bread with it. I'd recommend avoiding both and bringing your own food. With improvements in the staff's attitude and the food portion and quality this place gets closer to 5 stars rather then 3.

Great wine and entertainment! Howard is also a gracious host!!

Always a great time, and owners are wonderful people.

Went to Chateau O'Brien to have a light birthday celebration. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. I would say I am an average wine drinker but not a connoisseur by any means and the staff was able to assist me in which wines would pair with different dishes. Great spot surrounded by mountains. I would recommend for a small gathering or date.

Great winery ,the staff very friendly love love coming here.

This winery is not kid friendly, and signs are clearly posted announcing that visitors 21 and under are NOT WELCOME. On a beautiful weekend when every other winery was packed there were only 3 cars in the lot at O'Brien. Clearly they have made a poor policy decision. This winery is not worth your time and I will recommend to Vintage Virginia to remove them from the annual map or at least identify their limited access.

The place is beautiful, the wine is very good, the Virginia apple wine is delicious! We went back to buy more, especially because it makes a great gift for the holidays. The staff is very friendly and the owner is very passionate about his vineyard. We will come back soon!

Great wines! Great service! I highly recommend you get the cellar tasting with the owner. It's a wonderful experience!

We loved that Howard's wine that clearly shows his devotion to the art, having him present your tasting is well worth it. The winery is beautiful with a great view over the vines and valley. The wines are properly aged so ready to drink and offer a diverse palette; my wife loved the Malbec and I the Petit Verdot.

Serena Reiss

The wine was marginal. Had the cheese and meat platter which was a joke. Way over priced. The view is nice. The staff friendly enough.

Rebecca Hallmark

Howard, his staff, the wines, and the venue are phenomenal! We were treated with warmth and kindness. These are the best reds we have found in Virginia and his apple wine is so light and refreshing. We also did the cellar tasting and had the most amazing time. The platters are excellent, Howard only uses the best cheeses, meats, and olive oil. The venue is eclectic, comfortable, and welcoming. We had a wonderful time, away from the kids and the hussle of life. Thank you Chateau O'Brien!

OMG this winery is legit, if you are a wine snob this is the spot for you. Quality Quality Quality

The wine and views are fantastic. For Virginia. Really, it's about the only VA wine I like and will buy. Yeah, terribly overpriced given what you can get at Wegmans from Napa for 1/2 as much. But, that's not why you go to Wineries. Or, this winery in particular... You go because the owner is hilarious... I guess you need a lot of self confidence with that guy. I totally get why people are incensed about being kicked out or treated rudely. But, that's the charm of it. You'll have a hard time finding someone as wacky as this making awesome wine. And, if you get kicked out -- well, consider yourself lucky to be chosen. You got the full experience. You can take a 5 minute ride over to Aspen Dale. They'll be nice and you can have another glass of wine and tell your war stories.

Great space with a wonderful view. Apple wine is delicious.

This is the second time that I have been here and had a negative expirence. They are very slow and unprepared for busy weekends. Our group waited over an hour for a tasting. The fresh glass for every pour is annoying and slows down the process even more. The woman doing the tasting, while friendly and amusing, is consecending and does not have a sense of urgency even after we told her we had a schedule they had already messed up. Additionally, the wines are nothing special. Nothing here is memorable. As a person who drinks a lot of VA wine, I can think of many other wineries I would choose over any of the wines here. They are not balanced and very thin on flavor. $8 for 4 pours of wine is ok on the classic, but $15 for 4 on the reds tasting is overpriced for the expirence

Great wines, cool rustic tasting rooms, beautiful views!

This man is a genius! His wines are stellar. I am a dry red wine fan; but the ice apple wine is a must try. Like a Granny Smith candy burst on your tongue

Had a really pleasant visit here on Saturday. An easy drive to get there and such beautiful views. The wine was delicious-really loved the Petite Menseng, Rose, and the Vintner’s Reserve. The tasting was a lil long (and service was slow) but fun and it was great learning how and why wines are paired with certain foods. Cozy and comfortable with great prices, it felt like a true french cottage inside and out. Will definitely be back for the Private Cellar Tasting - thanks Howard.

The road going up to the winery is very steep and a single lane. Not sure what you would do if there was someone coming the other way. Defianately not Corvette friendly. Upon arrival the scenery is very nice, good view of rt66. Like the grape vines that are on the hand rails that take you to the winery. So we arrived and the pourer was not very friendly and the a little condescending. New glass for each pour was nice but I think un-needed. Maybe a little water would do the same, but still nice. The pours were plentiful but there was only 4 and cost $15. IMHO the wines were not smooth and had to many tannins. Maybe they left the skins on too long during fermentation (a little bitter) and I think too long in the barrels. I’m not a Malbec fan or Tannat. I was very excited about the Cab Franc and Petit Verdot. Disappointed once I tasted them. I’m not sure how you screw up a Petit Verdot and again this is my humble opinion. I’m sure a lot of people love their wines. The seating area was very nice an really like the rotunda. SWaddell

I have been to Chateau O'Brien several times. It is my husband and I's favorite winery in Virginia! We have had a private reserve tasting which is down in the cellar with the owner, Howard. He is very knowledgeable and answered all of my husband's questions regarding his wine process. We have had tastings on the main floor and purchased several bottles. We ordered a half a case and Howard even delivered it right to our door step the next day! A very important note, I do not like dry wine however Howard's dry wines completely changed that! I absolutely love his dry wines and his Virginia Apple Wine is to die for!!! My husband and I absolutely love the meat and cheese spreads and have never been disappointed by the wine, food, and staff. The view is beautiful as well!! The environment is very laid back and comfortable, as a bonus there is also live music at times. I have read over the negative reviews and quite honestly I do not believe those people could have had such horrible experiences. If you are looking for a hip hop winery where all the young kids go to hang out then Chateau O'Brien is not for you. But if you like to relax, eat great dishes, and drink AMAZING wine this it is the place for you!

Not really fair to rate as we didn't stop to sample. We made it into to parking lot but all the 'Do Not' (walk in in yard, etc.) signs completely turned us off so we departed. Just didn't feel welcoming and there's too many vineyards to feel uncomfortable. It's a shame as we sampled their Apple wine at Stribling Orchards and it was outstanding.

Tara C

Beautiful location, great staff, amazing wine! Also love that no one under 21 and no buses and limos. Keeps it a very chill environment where you can relax with friends and enjoy the day.

Quinn Cartheuser

Beautiful property with a beautiful view. The wines are great and the staff can describe what you’re going to taste in such detail, it’s like painting a picture in your mouth. They offer you cheese samples to pair with the wines which brings out flavors I’ve never experienced before. They also offer some small plates that are very helpful when you’re vineyard hopping.

Beautiful and delicious.

Staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Great time!

Nice selection of wines, beautiful view, friendly atmosphere. The owner is great, very knowledgeable. I like the no kids policy, kids don't belong at wineries anyways. If you feel you need to bring your kid with you to a winery then you probably shouldn't be going in the first place. The owner put those policies in place for a reason and its his winery, his decision. Don't tell people not to go here because you couldn't bring your kid. Use some common sense!

Awesome top tier wines. Fabulous owner

Always an awesome place, except the coffee maker didn't work. Had to walk a block for coffe, but hey, can't have everything!!

Spectacular view, good wine, and friendly staff. Their apple wine was our favorite, we also enjoyed their cheese plate. We spent about three hours at the winery and wouldn't hesitate to go back. There's also an apple orchard next door that's a good place to spend a couple hours. Together, they're a very worthwhile trip. The staff feels very strongly that their wine is the best, which can be off-putting (hence the four stars instead of five), but not very off-putting.

Stacy O'Rourke

We've met the owner several times along with his wife, dog and staff. Everyone made us feel very welcome and at home. The wine is outstanding and the atmosphere is very relaxing. The view is breathtaking as well. Enjoy a cheese plate while finishing your favorite bottle in their atrium. 3+ stars

Kim K

This place is NOT friendly at all, the wine is horrible. Not worth your money!!

Joyce Cutlip

Beautiful countryside. Fantastic aged wines. Great tasting with insights from the owner.

Morris HOFFMAN

Great wine...very poor service! Exasperating experience waiting for the wine tasting as this winery is wholly understaffed! Too bad...

Kenneth Sapp

This our favorite winery in Virginia. Howard and his staff are the best, you get treated like old friends and the wine is outstanding. I would recommend Chateau O'Brien to anyone who thoroughly enjoys wine and the experience of drinking fine wine.

James Duthie

Friendly and knowledgeable staff and owner. Good reds and very nice views. Their tastings are separated whites from reds and are two different charges if memory serves me correctly. It was a good experience and we had fun chatting with the pourers. Thanks!!

I've been to no less than 50 wineries in the region. I'm very fond of red wines and I've been looking for great red wine. I believe Howard's are in the top two best of the area. If you are above the fray and don't have time to slow down and enjoy a glass of wine this isn't the place for you. If you want a great wine with great service and a small venue that takes absolutely every ounce of their energy to give you the best product, then visit Chateau O'Brien. Howard, his staff, the wines, and the venue are phenomenal! We were treated with warmth and kindness. These are the best reds we have found in Virginia and his apple wine is so light and refreshing. We also did the cellar tasting and had the most amazing time. The platters are excellent, and the O'Brien chocolates are great as well. Thank you Chateau O'Brien!

Daniel Pass

Without exception my favorite vineyard and winery in all of Virginia, and one of the top three of all. I live in Seattle now and miss the ability to drive out for an afternoon. Excellent staff, great snacks and exceptional wines make every visit memorable. I shall return!

Bradley Scalio

Ok place, it's a winery, better than most easy coast places, by far the best in VA. Worth it if you want to get good red wine from a local winery because I've yet to find any place in VA who's wine is drinkable other than O'Brien's.

Corey Woo

Excellent wines and amazing service.
