Fri, 12/23/16 - For the first time ever, I decided to stop at Spiritz N' Wine (herein SNW) since I drive past it nearly every day.
Short version: Go somewhere else for a quality wine that isn't spoiled.
Long version: I was shocked to find this small wine shop carried my favorite Malbec (Trivento Reserve as well as Trivento Golden Reserve), a Ripasso, and the first bottle of Bardolino I've found in a liquor store between Norman and Napa (not an exaggeration, and yes, I drove from Norman to Napa in the past month).
I love Bardolino & Valpolicella, but Bardolino has been pretty scarce lately. I haven't kept up with my wine studies lately, but I remember when a particular Australian wine I liked was no longer available after 2 -3 years of severe drought. I thought maybe there was a similar terroir issue in Bardolino. Anyway, SNW had Bolla's brand, which isn't great but it isn't bad either. I uncorked the bottle, poured it in a goblet and let it sit a few minutes before tasting it. When I did, it was SOUR. Again, I thought it was an issue in the growing region that was the problem.
I decided to open the Malbec. Same thing happened. It was SOUR, like drinking vinegar. I had this experience once before when I left some wine at my mother's house and found out after the fact that she stored it in the garage during the summer and ruined it. Clearly, either SNW or whomever they buy their products from does not store their wine at the right temperature, and it's hot enough to spoil the wine.
I'm also sure it's not a vintage issue with the Malbec. I purchased a bottle of Trivento Reserve from the same vintage 2 weeks ago from another wine shop and it was fantastic.
Part of the reason I tried SNW is because the place I've always bought my wines from, The Spirit Shop on Berry and Main, hasn't been the same since they expanded the store. It's bigger, but the selection does not seem to be as good as it used to be, at least not for Italian reds.
So, I tried SNW. I wasted $45. I'm scared to open the Ripasso now.
Bottom line is, if you drink quality wines and you're looking for a good place in Norman to buy them, I would strongly encourage you not to buy from Spiritz N' Wine. The Spirit Shop, in spite of my previous observation, is still a much better place to go. The Corkscrew on Lindsey Street and 24th Ave SW is also a better place to go for a varied selection of wines. I understand there are a number of sizeable liquor stores in East Norman as well, I just never go on that side of town.
Neither The Spirit Shop nor The Corkscrew has sold me a spoiled bottle of wine in the last 20 years. For that matter, neither has Sooner West liquors. SNW sold me at least 2--and probably 3--in only one trip. SNW was not a positive experience, so I cannot recommend them to you.
I wish you better luck than I had.
