Obviously The Strand is unrivaled in terms of selection and, for the most part, price. I am never disappointed, even when I'm going in for an obscure title (which is often). I also love their random mugs and buttons and other stocking stuffer type things and always find the perfect small gift whenever I go. The only downside to coming here is that it is always packed, but that's not their fault- it's just because they're so great. It makes me happy to see people browsing the shelves and reminds me the written word isn't dead. All the staff is helpful and I've never had a bad experience there. Definitely a must-visit if you're not from the city.

Greg Rosenberg

I've never been to a bookstore like Strand before. This massive bookstore is a registered landmark full of countless books, including classics and rare finds. The top floor was my favorite with limited prints and signed books. Even if you don't plan on buying a book, it's worth taking a 20 minute walk through the Strand Book Store.

Sara Register

My must stop in NYC. I can spend hours in here. Obviously the book selection is top notch but they have other items too: socks, tote bags, assorted gifts and such. Right by my favorite people watching park, too! Easy Subway ride to get there.

Anthony Mastromatteo

I love it...love it...love it. One of the 2 bookstores I go to every time in NYC. Things I would have to order in Ohio are often there in new or used form. And then the joy of discovery is always a real possibility. I have been going since 1992. A loyal customer who doesn't need a loyalty card. No gimmicks...just good books!

Danielle Kravec

I could spend hours in this book store just looking at all the cool books they have to offer. It was a suggested stop I found via reading a blog and I'm so glad I did. Went home with about 6 books that day.

Joe Smith

Excellent bookstore. Great deals and comprehensive selection. Got myself a few novels and a few econ books. Good vibes all around.

Kaitlyn B

As a self described book nerd, Strand was like paradise. I could have easily gotten lost in there. A great place for book lovers to go and explore!

Pavel Morozov

Internet is killing bookstores and this place is not just still standing, but provides a wonderful selection of books and events. My only complain is that my favorite department, rare books, is closing too early, but I can understand.

Vince Mareino

Best book store in the city. Enormous, enormous selection; good prices; friendly, well read staff.

John Niedzwiecki

A New York staple but worth the visit. An immense collection, perfect for browsing if you love books or to find just what you're looking for. Helpful staff. Great selection. There floors of books. Love it.

Russell

Very helpful staff You can find anything you are looking for Huge Variety

Anthony Nicolas

Wonderful selection, prices. Love finding old rare books. Plenty to choose from. Nice helpful staff. Excellent location.

Jake Vithana

If Noah's Ark was a bookstore. A fantastic place to buy, sell and peruse tomes in every subject imaginable. $1 bargains to be found outside, rarities on the top floor, and pretty much everything else inbetween! I can't recommend this store any more.

The K Lifeyt

Best book store I’ve been too. Always check all the books for the lowest price. Some books might have a bent page and they will have mark it down. So keep an eye

Ify Ekott

An amazing bookstore. It's very different from the standard Barnes & Noble in that it gives you the vibe that you're in a library of your own. Rustic, woodsy, but still fun. They also have special days for books on sales. Definitely a must visit for book lovers when in the city.

Duane Camitsch

I love book stores. Leafing through pages and pages of pulp is like few experiences that allow you a tactile and visual interface that is unlike any other. If you like looking at a book to help you get to know it, no other place on earth can compete. The place is clean, super organized, have friendly staff, and lots of surprises. If you have very little time, you can easily get in and out and be on your way. If you have more time, then slow down and enjoy.

zohara Herman

The strand book store is amazing! It's so *not* overpriced and even cheap! It is a classical book store. Please never let it go out of business!

Isaac Aronow

The greatest bookstore on Earth. Anything I want, need, or didn't know I wanted or needed is here. Sometimes I even find a weird edition of a book I already have and I buy that too. Heaven for a literature student. Just the best place to find yourself on an evening when you have no real plans.

Ahmad Khan

Best bookstore in the world. Has a warm fuzzy feeling of being homely and not corporate. You could spend hours at their outdoor shelves of $1-$5 books. One of my best features is that the people who work there give their recommendations which makes it a very personal experience.

Chloe Lim

Great selection of bargain cheap books that down to $1! If you have time, dig through those and you will manage to find something good. Definitely recommend this to all the bookworms

Delia Flores

Strand is a great three floor bookstore. On the third floor you can find rare books. In the basement you'll find out of print books that are always amazing finds. In between floors you'll find cool knick knacks for your bag, office, etc. Everytime I visit Strand it's always a good time!

R F

Overly crowded just to enter the store and the set up makes me anxious. But they have a wonderful connection and great notebooks/ bags/ socks and cool stuff

Sarah

This place is a book lover's paradise! I spent a good hour in here and I probably could have spent longer if I didn't have to head home. The prices are also great compared to other bookstores and I feel good supporting a business like this rather than a company like Amazon.

Jules Gonzo

Loved the whole experience. Everyone was so nice and the store is overall so amazing and full of life.

Charlotte Amos

strand book shop sells new used and rare/hard to find books on a wealth of various topics. they also sell notepads, cups and the like. a great place to visit if you are in new york, just browsing you are bound to find more than one book that you will want to take home with you. they also have carts outside where each book is only a dollar, which i think is great and encouraged people to perhaps try a genre they havent read before

Dietrich James Nigh

Such an interesting store to visit for any bookworm. Their selection of books is astounding. I found two books cheaper than Amazon could offer. That being said, my general experience is that their prices are fair but not the cheapest out there. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly.

Talia Sieff

This is the greatest bookstore on the planet (that I've been to, personally). I'm in love with a building and everything in it. The staff appears to be functionally omniscient. There's nothing within that I don't want to buy. I fail to come to terms with that fact.

nathan vertommen

An incredible amount of books, helpfull sales staff and a great atmosphere. What more do you want?

Tiffany Chen

This bookstore has so much to offer if you are in the mood to do some exploring! I love that this bookstore is three floors and has a sell-back option. Among other great things, The Strand also has an eclectic selection of pins, cards, tote bags, prints, etc. Definitely love stopping by, even when it gets pretty busy.

Mikey T

An iconic bookstore in NYC. It’s a huge bookstore with new and second hand books. It’s an independent store that is owned by the same family for several generations. You can buy a lot of books there without being ruined. Special kudos to the staff members who are without exception book lovers who can professionally advise you if you have any questions. Don’t forget to pay a visit to the rare books department (top floor).

Eduardo Karpat

One of my favorite places in the city. Roam around the 1-3 dolar books outside looking for something special or fo inside for new books organized by staff by special themes. Great collection of business books downstairs and art and architecture books upstairs. If not always beating Amazon in price, it does have great deals and for sure quite an experience.

גיא ב

Amazing. Like a museum. I was luck I entered. Didn't have a good reason to leave

Ken Haley

Great book store. Lots and lots of books. Buy and sell. Very knowledgeable staff

Louis Farias

Great selection of books. Friendly service and fair prices

Phil Lemos

What a great shop. Books galore from all quarters, science, kids, fiction. Also many interesting items to purchaser. Great second hand book collection outside also. Deffo visit this if you're a bookworm.

boramir007

I enjoy bookstores on general, and this one has a lot to see. The staff were helpful, and it has a very unique feel. I recommend a visit.

Scott McIntosh

Come here for a uniquely arranged and designed bookstore. Don't come here if you require lots of personal space. The only breathing room I found was over by the cook book section.

Richardson Water

Massive selection of books, with very interesting sections. Staff is knowledgeable so they can give recommendations! Very fun to just check out as well.

lisa DellaPorta

Well organized huge selection of books at all prices. Does have an elevator for those who can't do stairs.

Lucy Stocks

AMAZING! was in NYC on holiday and while I love a book store wasn't completely convinced it was something I wanted to do on holiday but was so good! Books everywhere, so much variety and some great non book items as well. I went multiple times on my holiday and spent several hours each time!

Josh Elias

Beautiful bookstore in the heart of Manhattan. If Strand doesn’t have what you’re looking for I’d be very surprised. If you’re in the union square area you should absolutely stop by Strand.

Bryant Ruiz

Excellent selection with excellent prices. The staff is also super friendly! Best of all, that old book smell makes you feel right at home.

Richard WB

Great place to find both rare and out of print books. Found a mint copy of the Complete Early 19th Century Woodworker with handwritten notes by Stephen Shepherd.

Allison Yerges

Love this place! Not sure there are enough hours in the day to discover how many books they truly have in every book and cranny.

Tia Dunn

This place never fails to inspire or delight. Such hidden treasures here. It also very classic New York. I've bought so many books here over the years. New and used. Once I bought a used copy of Truman Capote's Breakfast at Tiffany's and discovered a handwritten post-it note inside that made me smile. I've also sold a good few books here and was very impressed by the efficiency of that process.

Oded Orly

4 floors, one bookstore. every category you could think about, diversity in prices and great costumer service. go go go.

Arkangel

Its a very nice and chill place to browse through books and relax, if you need to get a book for class and read up somethin then you should come here and read up and they have many different versions of books for example I found the book "Beowolf" by 3 different authors, I did not scheme through to see how different all of them are but if you need a specific book its good they have many different versions of books for stories you need.

Spelman Beaubrun

Great bookstore with no attitude and a very nice staff. Watch your watch and your wallet for you'll end spending hours and walk out with loads of good readings. Love this place

Sally Cabrera

Honestly, better than Barnes & Noble in every way. Even the employees are happier. So many selections and awesome merch only found at Strand. Visiting this iconic bookstore is a must if you're in the area or visiting the city.

Adam joseph

I usally go once a week either to get something from the $1-$5 carts or sometimes to find something on my list that I'm looking for. Overall I have a great experience.

Kimberly Niyogi

I'm not sure this place needs anymore reviews. It's a classic. So many treasured books of mine came from here. It's like a treasure hunt every visit. Their non-book items are also unique.

Félix Langevin Harnois

Best book store in New York with great price and amazing selection. Used as well as new books are available here.

Lyndsay Faye

The Strand is one of the best used and new indie bookstores in the United States, and is well worth a visit even if you don't technically need a book! Wander around the front tables for gifts for practically anyone, from Virginia Woolf totes to succulent pens. Head up to the Rare Book Room for a look at incredible first editions, signed copies, and volumes that are works of art in and of themselves. It's a fantastic place to kill an hour or five!

Stephanie Brown

It's hard not to live this place. It's full of books, yes. But the atmosphere is so welcoming. The staff is friendly and will point you in the right direction -it was my first visit. They were very friendly and excited about the event just as I was. I went for the pride comedy show. I had great laughs, met new people, and found a really interesting bookstore that has, naturally, the hometown bookstore feel that chains like barnes and noble try to create.

Anthony Queen

This is a must see if you are visiting New York and enjoy reading. Even if you do not enjoy reading the Strand has other miscellaneous stuff like posters, notebooks, post cards and magnets. The books are neatly organized and the staff are very helpful. I find the staff picks to be super helpful. They almost always have used books on sale outside for very cheap. They also have a rare book room on the top floor but it is not open every day so check when it is open if you're interested in it.

Christine Gagne

Lots of books! Rare books on top floor! Fun place to see! Go to see the out of print books. Fun stop for anyone who loves books.

Frederic Bouchon

Vast selection of books in many fields which makes it probably one of the best bookstores in Manhattan. I would have rated higher should the cashier was more service minded. I would rather pay at a machine instead of having to deal with haughty and unfriendly cashier. The other staff seemed much more happy and helpful.

Daniel Prots

Awesome used books. Low price and high quality

Krystin Haser

So many books! I love getting french literature books here. Generally they are much more reasonably priced than other places. I'll definitely be back.

Bilal Aslam

Incredible collection of books. I could browse endlessly for days! An absolute joy visiting this place

A.K. Lewis

The markdowns on books can range from inconsequential all the way to a solid 50%+ off on older/less well known novels. If you love niche authors or older publications his is a great place to get solid deals. They have a massive selection, especially notable are the art, architecture, and fashion books that might be hard to find at other bookstores. And unlike most places The Strand trusts people to be grown adults and know how to use ladders if they need to. It's very crowded basically always, so don't expect to get in and out in a hurry. The $1 offerings outside sometimes have some unexpected gems. Also for sale are cute pins, bags, socks, etc. All kind of pricey, but charming and they make good gifts. There's a bathroom upstairs if you're the type to linger long enough to need one. It's not ALWAYS cheaper/better to come here than Barnes and Noble, but at least shopping at The Strand feels like supporting a private bookstore and not a corporate monolith. There are also author events almost every day, and read-alongs for kids on the weekends. Check their website for scheduling, or the big calendar outside the store.

Eric Lin

My favorite bookstore in the city. They have great curated sections on the main floor, and many other floors of every genre you can imagine including a rare book section. You can really get lost in there.

Natalia Mantini

love this place. you can always find some great reads, and cute accessories. and you can always find someone to help you if you a questions :)

Prof Mike

Huge selection. Usually filled with tourists, which is annoying. The rare book room is really good ( by appointment only). Don't go on a hot day; the air conditioning isn't good. The sales staff is helpful. The cashiers, on the other hand, are nasty; this never seems to change. Overall, one of the last booktores, and worth a visit.

Lisa Peery

This is the best book store on the planet. 18 miles of books with an amazing selection of tote bags, pins, magnets and crazy socks. I could spend hours browsing the books here. Bought a book, got it home and it was signed by the author! That was a nice surprise!

Markos Moreno

I stopped by on my way to the train station because I am a sucker for a good bookstore, and boy, I am glad I did. When you walk in you can't help but be in awe of the sheer concentration of literature, souvenirs, and knick-knacks. Every time I thought I reached the end of the store, there was another new section, packed full of knowledge and fun. The only thing that can be difficult is moving through the aisles if someone else is preoccupied with a book. Still, the narrow aisles makes the establishment more endearing. I wish I could have spent more time perusing the enormous selection, but the nice thing is that I don't imagine it will be going anywhere and can come the next time I am in NYC.

JS

Bookstore with soul, the best I've been to in NY. Used books from $1. Mass market books for half price. Amazing merchandise.

Laurie Kennedy

Great books. My Daughter has been buying books here for 10+ years.

Rene Obando

A whole universe of options, book paradise, most of the personnel is ready to help with a smile, l enjoy every visit to this place... ...prices??? ...ridiculously low... They are really leading a cultural crusade. Well done STRAND TEAM!!!

J S.

This place is defintely more tourist oriented these days with swag but it does still have the stacks you can get lost in and enough used books for those of us that love a little life in our items. The dollar stacks have went up in prices which is disappointing considering these are the books they received for free but eventually it had to happen. The place itself is very well maintained considering how many people go through it daily and books are relatively easy to find.

C. Foo

Strand :-). If you love books, and even if you don't, this is a great place to visit. As the motto indicates, there are miles and miles of books. They've recently shuffled things around a bit to make the first (main) floor more open. Prices are excellent, even for new books, but they really shine with their used books collection. They also have rare and first edition books, as well as signed copies here and there. The website is a great resource to make sure they have what you need before you visit. They also sell pop culture related knick knacks, and have author readings/panels every so often.

David Dahan

Love this place but I have a hard time bearing the fact it became a tourist pilgrimage. This will impact the soul of this place. I can handle the obnoxious staff but I have a very hard time with how it is the Disneyland of some illiterate philistines. If you love books it's a place for you. Just ignore the crowd.

Jason Schrock

Amazing book store. I could get lost here for days on end. New best sellers, classics, hard to find...they have en entire floor for their rarest books. I wish I could have spent more time here. Highly recommend for any book lovers or anyone with some time to kill.

Raymond Napoli

Four floors of books to get lost in. If you want to find something in particular there are desks and cashiers on each floor to help you - they're fairly good at locating precisely where something is. The variety lends itself to finding excellent out-of-print books on all manner of subjects. They often have guest speakers on the fourth floor (Rare Books), those are events you really don't want to miss.

Flora

Books inside and outside of the store. Books on three floors. Books on high shelves and tables. Great philosophy: “Make America THINK again”; “Make America READ again.” Books are well-organized, with clear recommendations. Fun book-related items available as well. Almost no seating, which is to be expected in this part of the city. But the park nearby makes an excellent place to read. Next visit, I will I’ll allow for hours of alone time browsing.

Ruth Sarnago

Best book store ever!!! Was in a bit of a hurry but from what I saw they had a much larger selection of books than the average book store and if you're willing to really look a lot of older books you can't find most places. Prices seem fairly reasonable and they have loads of other merchandise (socks, bags of all sizes, magnets, stickers, cards, and art prints just to name a few)

Yanna Bueno

Awesome selection in this place. It's a bit on the pricey side however, besides the books, you get amazing knowledgeable helpful staff, you're able to sell your own books, and there's so much more than books here.

Annette Patterson

Immense space filled with Used books but also an extremely large amount of new retail products. Way too crowded for me to browse I will try again next time on a weekday.

Paloma Ventosilla

Wide selection of used books and pretty well conserved at less than half the retail price. Cafeteria, clean and cozy place to study.

gustavo c

Great and numerous selection of books from a wide range of categories. Outstanding service and rare finds you will not get at the large chain bookstore retailers.

angels mart

This is the best NY bookstore. You can find many books that are already out of print. Also love the cute notebooks section!

Arianna Pappas

Incredible bookstore with so much history. Hope to go back here again one day and revisit the 18 miles of books!!

Chandell Gadbois

I love walking around and perusing the shelves. The curated tables are where I find some of best reads, and I always have a pleasant experience here.

Monica J NYC

Although I prefer Barnes and Noble, this place is truly paradise for bibliophiles...It's a classic "old school" bookstore.

Audrey Marshall

Amazing place for any book lover. Floors to explore. Take a good couple of hours for your visit. Merchandise available. Check the website for events in-store. Also surrounding area is lovely to explore.

Erika Stella

Be prepared to spend hours here, not kidding. You can find good books for a dollar at the outdoor carts, just gotta be patient and sieve through everything. Souvenirs aren't too expensive, there are very nice pencil cases and tote bags (cat prints for the win). Bathroom happened to be fairly clean. If I lived in New York, this would be a frequent spot.

Yann Billeter

I love it. Just go in and get lost between the books (of which there are a lot). Many great books at reduced prices!

Minha Javed

This place is expansive, beautiful, and filled with so many different kinds of books. It has a very upbeat vibe and some unique and hilarious gift items as well. We came across their $1 book sale which featured a great selection of books.

Leo Betancourt

Books on absolutely everything. Great place to walk through when you're bored one weekend or when it's too cold to be outside

Ronni Kerstein

If you love books this is the place for you. New books, old books, rare books... you'll find it here. It is NOT a pristine bookstore. It's crammed floor to ceiling, every nook and cranny. Lots of people, too!

Joshua Greenfield

What makes the Strand most worthwhile for me is the staff book recommendations.

Phenix Hall

What is there not to love about the strand? Since the closing of Borders I have found the B&N to be totally unimpressive and the staff are uninformed. There isn’t one time that I have entered the store and found a knowledgeable staff person. Not only can they recommend books by questioning you on your previous reads in that genre but these folks walk you over and grab the book for you. For an avid reader such as myself this place is like heaven on earth. The prices are okay but as I see it you are supporting a local business whose main interest in providing you with what you want versus the stockholders.

Chris Turnier

It was fun looking through their collection. The checkout line can get long but since there were so many cashiers working, I was able to purchase my book pretty quickly.

Alma Greenfield

This store is, put simply, incredible. You may walk in expecting to pick out a single book, and end up with as much as ten and maybe something like a hat from the store. Perhaps this is only my experience, perhaps this is only an exaggeration, but it's such a great store, and the only problem I've had with it is not spending an insane amount of money. It's always worth going to.

Carlos Naranjo

A truly a landmark for reading. Wonderful books. My daughter and I always visit as if it was a candy store for the mind.

Mark S

Excellent bookstore that you can get lost in. We bought 9 books for $123, most of them were hardcover and one was a first print. We spent over an hour in here and wanted to buy more but didn't want to carry more books to the hotel. I was sad that they didn't have a couple of books, one of them was on order and no time for delivery could be given. Overall a great book store that had a little bit of something for everyone. As a side not I am a history person and I was able to find tons of material over my favorite subject.

S M

Staff are know it alls, but still an amazing book store. Full of independent authors and eclectic materials.

Duc Hoang

Simply divine. My favorite place on Earth, besides my home. I can easily spend a whole morning here. The staffs are helpful. The books are arranged in topics like banned books, lgbtq,... with interesting tags, and alphabetical order of authors’ names.

Jun Lee

This place is great. It has great used books. I could spend hours here. Prices are food and reasonable. Found RKF and his time for a bargain. Awesone!

Paul Fox

Just received my copy of 'Hitler' by Peter Longerich today. Very impressive packaging of my book. That alone makes me a return customer. The care you showed in packaging is a great reason to continue buying from you. Far too often books ordered by mail are beat to hell by arrival. Copy is new, but pristine after 1500 miles of travel via USPS. Thank you.

Katie Scott

It’s impossible to visit this place and leave without buying gifts for friends, never mind the books. Pins, buttons, stickers, greeting cards, postcards (little known fact — they sell individual postage stamps for when you want to drop that birthday card you just bought right in the mail! Just ask for a stamp when you get to checkout), coasters, everything under the sun, they have that perfect item for someone you love.

Tom Hickey

A New York City Gem. Book lover's paradise. Cozy yet extensive. Knowledgeable staff. Go !

Robert Albro

With Amazon and Barnes & Noble effectively erasing the onetime populous and diverse landscape of local color book shops, the Strand persists as an increasingly rare anachronism well worth the visit. If you'd like to read a new novel, but don't know what, go to the Strand and let serendipity rule. Forget algorithms! You'll be better off.

Marc Coury

I really loved this bookstore. It has a fantastic vibe. There is a rare books floor at the top which is great. I could have spent all day there!

Chuck Stephens

There is nowhere in the world that has a bookstore like the Strand. Their selection of books is better then anywhere and their customer service is informative and friendly. Too be clear, if the Strand ever closes, I will have NO reason to visit NYC any longer. Do you understand Deblasio!!!

Virginia Mott

I have been here many times. This place is a classic and my favorite bookstore in the country. It's a book lovers dream The have new and used books. They have a rare book collection on the 4th floor and will buy books from you. You won't get much for them but it's better then them sitting around. Book selling is in the back of the main floor. They constantly have new stuff so come back often. There is also a bathroom near the children's section.

FancyCookie

A very nice bookstore. I absolutely loved it here and would like to come again. There was a large selection of books and the staff were helpful when I couldn't find what I was looking for. The first floor is mostly adult books. The second floor has books for a younger audience. There is also a basement. I found a nice messenger bag I picked up with the store name on it. Overall a nice place I would recommend going to.

Sara L

The best book store I have ever been to. Amazing book collection, here you will find whatever book you are willing to read. If you are going to be in New York for a couple of days or weeks this library is a must-see.

Julie A Baldyga

One of the best independent bookstores in the world <3 Their selection is great! There are multiple floors that have been wonderfully categorized. Their merchandise is also amazing - everything from clothes, pins, socks, stationary, and so on. *You could spend hours in here, so plan well. The neat thing about the Strand is that they host a plethora of events! I have attended several of their events with some of my favorite authors. The admission price is worth it, typically $15, in which you get a Strand gift card. If you are a book lover visiting NYC and don't visit the Strand, you're missing out.

Bernadette Candelario

This place is the type of bookstore i remember going to as a kid. Everything from the creaky wooden floors to all of the display tables with books remind me of a book fair. It is classic and timeless and in this digital age it is nice to come here and browse for a new treasure to read.

Kaitlin Frick

It may be the busiest bookstore in the city - seriously, no matter what time of day, navigating the aisles of the Strand is a nightmare. BUT they have pretty much every book you could possibly want just waiting on the shelves, so fighting the crowds is worth it.

Karen Botha

still my favorite book store. good selection and deals. helpful staff if you're looking for something in particular!

William Boyce

This is one of my favorite place. I spend most of my time in this book store. I get wide and valuable knowledge with great book selection.

Emily Thompson

Absolutely amazing book store! I could spend so many hours there just browsing. The selection is extensive and incredible. Definitely worth stopping by!

Michele Del Zoppo

This is a different world, worth taking a walk in the summer to refresh body and mind, grab a book and make it your better quality souvenir.

Reaven Veaceslav

I was reasonably impressed by the quantity of books in general. The overall selection was large and they certainly succeed at offering a diverse collection. I tend towards the manga and graphic novel sections, and I'd actually recommend going to a place a few doors down for those instead of here. My biggest issue is that instead of being a book store, it feels like a tourist trap. They have a large section of merchandise just for the store. There's no realistic in store seating option, and this kind of book store could benefit from a cafe or such to let people rest here. I felt more shuffled in and out like a tourist than someone relaxing and mulling over book collections. Overall, it's a big and fine touristy book store, but I really don't think I want to go back, and I wouldn't go here looking to actually find books I want to read.

White Melon Design

Best book store in NYC! You can buy old new... and also sell your all books, a place full of magic ✨

JJ Haws

Once they roamed the plains in mighty herds. Now only a few remain. The book store. A place where people who love to read find the tribe and hours of missed sleep. Of course, NYC still has vibrant examples where many cities do not.

Jocelyn Slater

Amazing book selection!!! It can be a bit overwhelming at first since the store is so bit but once you dive in, it's hard to tear yourself away!! Staff was very helpful in finding things too. The prices are great - lots of used books and mass market books for just $4-$8. It's the best bookstore in NYC and quite honestly the best bookstore I've ever been to!

Candice Brusuelas

I've never been past the first floor center displays. So many good finds in one place. It's a book lover's wonderland.

Kelley Cooper- Cameron

Yes, I went to New York and went to the bookstore. I love bookstores. The Strand must be explored. The staff is very helpful. The store is colorful and fun. I went with a dear friend and we had an absolute blast.

Hana Frluckaj

Classic New York staple. Grab one of their totes because they're super cute and durable. The store itself can be a bit chaotic with so many people and sections, but the staff are always friendly and will help you navigate and find the book you're looking for.

Carpentherapy

The atmosphere, collection and customer service are first rate.

Anna Tiburzi

It's an amazing bookstore. Four floors of books on all kinds of subjects and also mugs/totes/pins/patches for whatever you want. If you love books and you're in the area, you've gotta stop in!

Quin Hricik

Absolutely incredible. The selection of books is massive. The staff are generally helpful. For a New York city bookstore the prices are very low. The store has a combination of used and new books meaning there is a wide range of price. It's worth going in just to see how many books they have in this historical bookstore.

I love love love books so this was truly my wonderland! Walking around all the books I felt like a kid in a candy store. Just browsing the many rows and rows of books made my day. There are three levels, and I also enjoyed going upstairs and browsing their many comic books! The shopping carts are so helpful and funny as there’s finally a book store that understands my problem; I don’t have enough hands for all my books! Definitely a must see!

found this by chance. thought I'd died and gone to heaven. love the tall ladders and that there are no jobsworth spouting health and safety. Highlight of my trip to New York Eileen UK

If you try to sell your books here, they only buy back paperback books for $1.00 even if they're brand new. This is apparently their 'standard' policy, but not stated anywhere on their website. A manager named Billy emailed me stating that they'll review every book and give me a fair price if it's in good condition. That was a lie. The associate Leila confirmed the lie ($400 worth of books for a mere $20). The Manager Billy had nothing to say when I confronted him in the store. I do not recommend coming to the Strand Book Store. They will leave you "stranded" and be unapologetic about it. Please take your books elsewhere or donate them to a worthy cause.

One of the best book stores in New York City. The collection is curated and more than likely they have the book you are looking for. The strand also holds specials events and book signings so keep an eye out for them. There are great books for a dollar or less on the outside. This is a must visit for everyone.

Probal DasGupta

Outstanding collection. Great price for used books. Must visit again and again.

The Strand Bookstore is a fantastic place to visit. Amazing amount of books and the rare collection is fun as well. Although there are only certain and Limited hours for the rare collection so make a point to check the hours. There are not a lot of seating areas so don't expect to come home and sit and read. The staff is extremely kind helpful and interactive I love those guys there. This is a absolute must visit place in NYC if you are any kind of reader and enjoys books.

Wish I could give this more stars. A bibliophile's dream! More than one floor of books. Best sellers on tables close to the entry. No one bothering you as you read to see if you like the book. I would almost bankrupt myself buying books from there. You can also order books if they don't have it in the store.

David Arnedo

Super deep selection. Great website (buy online, pick up in store). No wonder people visit it almost as a tourist destination! The team is very knowledgeable and has recommended some of my favorite books.

Shu Patel

I'm not a book guy but my wife is and she loved it. They have pretty much everything. I love history so I did look at some of those books and they were great. Again, I'm terrible at making time to read so didn't actually buy any but my wife did and prices were either cheaper or comparible to buying online.

Miles and miles of Books Oh My!! Go to the deepest layer below for a vast selection of banned books. The people that work there love books and it's great to see the staff's picks in almost every section of the store. Love this place. Also great for finding fun presents and everything in between.

Amy Schrauf

I love most bookstores, no exception here. Several floors, good staff recommendations, great pin/sock/keychain area. Have gone in several times with intention of using bathroom alone, but have never left empty handed

Grégory Quéromès

Wow, what can I say? I stayed for what seemed to be hours! There is such a rich selection of books for all genres. I greatly appreciated the organization of the store, the other products sold in relation to the books, and the community reviews are awesome! I left with a whole new summer reading list

Iconic place in it's own right. Staff knowledgeable, friendly and efficient. And you can always find some good deals on used books.

If you thought the era of the book store was over you haven't been to Strand. This place is packed with people and for good reason, the store is packed with books. There are new books, used books, rare books and some strange books. There are some books so valuable they are in a safe. Don't miss out on the third floor. I bought two old unusual books and wasn't even really shopping. You won't be able to leave empty handed either.

Sam Borgstrom

This book store is intense. Three floors of books, records, socks, merchandise, all for fantastic prices. The staff were friendly and helpful, and even had recommendations for books we were interested in. We will be back!

What's not to love? A book lover's paradise. Old books, new books, used books, rare books. Each time I go there I literally spend a couple of hours browsing through the endless rows of books. Fun!

Denise Paz

I’m moderately familiar with the union square area but i stumbled by this place looking for something eat and it was a great accidental discovery. They have books outside for $1-5 (a large amount). And when i ventured inside it got better. The books are decently priced and they have other cool miscellaneous stuff!

Simon Bækgaard

If you love books, you have to visit Strand. The love of books shines through in every display!

Kevin Hawkins

If you love books, this is the place to go. It is huge with a great supply of new and used books. The prices are good too. You will find the popular books there. However, it is so much fun to go through the stacks or tables and finding a book to read that you didn't know existed.

Will Brennan

By far one of the coolest and largest book shops I've stepped foot in. I went here with my Dad and we spent about 30 minutes looking around. If you are in New York City and love books this is a MUST see. Even if you're just wandering around NYC and don't like books you should still check out Strand Book Store.

Shazia Razzaq-Seth

I love the Stand. Get lost in a book store that pulls you in and wants you to explore your interest. The gift of a book you can hold onto and turn each page and fall in love with written words. I love the kids section, philosophy in the basement and recommendations. My only issue is there is nowhere to really sit.

Ellison Heil

An amazing bookstore with multiple levels and texts for any reader of any age and interests. A must for both local New Yorkers and tourists!

Thanos Tapras

Great place to select your next book. Calm and inspiring to get you reading again

Ola Marie

I LOVE STRAND! With the reading on iPads and tablets going into this book store seeing wall to wall books and even the small of the books is wonderful. Need a book go there l.

Siona Marlin

Amazing bookstore! Took awhile to understand the layout and cataloging but what a place to be

Ashton Samson

Best store reminiscent of the old days, when books mattered to everyone. Go check out this store, if you want to be part of the group of people who love books the right way.

Tania

The Strand is awesome! I could’ve spent the whole day there, so many choices of books and other things!

RaeAnne Jones

I love book stores. Strand has a huge selection and I think their prices are very reasonable.

Jason Hose

My absolute favorite bookstore in the world. Best selection of art books in the United States. Helpful and friendly staff too.

Cora White

Fun place to bop around in, lots of knick knacks and gifts. I got some post cards here. Selection of scifi was meh, but they had a lot of other genres I didn't peruse.

Edwina Bertha Narita

I want to move in this bookstore! Can you guys like me in over the weekend or something? It is great, swing buy and get a good book, read in in Central Park and have a nice weekend!

Sean Goodison

Possibly the coolest bookstore in the world. One can easily spend hours there and still not catch everything. And the Rare Book Room is not to be missed, always a cool selection.

Ely Jayne

Beautiful store and incredible selection of books. The staff, at least at the checkout I was at, were incredibly rude and wouldn't stop talking to each other long enough to even tell me how much my book was. So many other beautiful bookstores I'd recommend in NY over this one.
