We can't say enough good things about this winery. The owners are very friendly and welcoming. The wines are superb, skillfully made from local grapes - most of which are grown in their 16-acre estate vineyard. The white wines range from semi-dry to sweet, most with aromatic components that are truly compelling. Made from hybrid varieties developed by the University of Minnesota to both make great wine and survive winter temperatures as low as -40F, these wines are surprisingly similar to many wines from European vinifera varieties. The new white - Itasca - reminds some palates of sauvignon blanc and others of pinot blanc. Finished semi-dry, it's a delightful wine. Another standout is the ice wine which has a floral nose and a concentrated fruit essence that stands up through the sweetness. The red wines are excellent as well. The Hunter's Red blend is full bodied and hearty with just enough oak to round it off on the palate. St. Croix is a treat for those looking to find a distinctive varietal, with a spicy edge that sets it above the typical red profile. The winery itself is a spacious tasting room with a pleasant veranda and lots of outdoor seating overlooking beautiful landscaping and a vineyard view. The winemaking area occupies a wing just off the tasting room, and on the other side is a large space for events such as music nights and weddings. If you like wine or are just looking for a weekend escape this is an enjoyable destination.
