You must have seen that the average score it has is nearly the top, and it's founded on a very large number of opinions, so we can be pretty sure that the valuation is quite reliable. If people have bothered to rate when they've done well, is that it works.
You know that we don't usually stop to give tatings when these are positive and we usually do it only if we've had a problem or issue...
This Winery is classified in the category of Steak house.
One of the best steakhouses I've ever been to. Deserve the wait ❤️
When a city offers so many options, these guys step up and provide an exceptional service, menu and the food we have had here has been perfect. Highly recommended
Handcrafted cocktails, great food, and dim lighting make for a comfortable environment after a long day's work.
Bad time to show up at 8pm, i had to wait 40 mins for a table for 2. I came here for lunch and the menu was different. But Tasty for sure
Great steak house. Nice atmosphere and plenty of parking near by. Would for sure go again.
This steakhouse is the real deal. Excellence in all facets. The Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding is NOT to be missed!!! Really, I had the 14oz dry-aged ribeye, the wife had scallops. We also ordered a half dozen oysters on the half shell as an appetizer and the parkerhouse rolls. Cannot leave out the Mac & Cheese. Everything perfectly prepared and absolutely delicious!!
Arrived 30 minutes early, made our selections in the bar over appetizers.Seated on time, placed our orders within 5 minutes. Waited 50 minutes for our meals and treated with contempt by management when we complained. I certainly would not recommend this establishment.
I have had two outstanding meals here and looking forward to more. Both times the meals were expertly prepared and served. Personally I am a fan of the filet mignon with potatoes and mushrooms. I would also recommend getting a Manhattan. Inside the decor is sophisticated but not ostentatious.
Amazing food and service!
visited about four, it was not full. next time i'll be back with my friends. i see why this place has a lot of great reviews.
First rate, worthy of San Francisco. Great show from the counter seats.
Ahhhh what can I say, the ambiance is there, the music is great and sophisticated but old school and the food was yummy! Pricey but worth it, and l-o-v-e-l-y staff!
Sat at the counter and had excellent service and interaction with the chefs and staff. They were awesome and food was delicious. Two of us had the dry aged ribeye and another had the bison fillet. We had a great time.
What an amazing restaurant! Our favorite in San Diego. Start off with a signature cocktail or an icy cold martini. I love their steak tartar as a go to starter. From delicious apps to succulent steaks the food is always 5 star. If you’re not a meat eater there are lots of other options and specials that hilight the season. But if you’re a steak lover their steaks are melt in your mouth tender and perfectly cooked - be sure to order a couple of sauces to try. Attentive and Truly professional service. Save room for dessert.
Great food for meat lovers and a nice selection of wines
Cowboy steaks is top notch
Service is always awesome even when they have a full house. Looking forward to going back again. The place has a nice atmosphere. This place has positive reviews for a reason.
We are so very happy we had the opportunity to experience Cowboy Star while in San Diego for our 32nd anniversary. Amazing service, truly amazing. While we have several top options in Phoenix with Maestros, Steak 44, Bourbon Steak etc NONE imo can touch Cowboy Stars delivery. Quality and attention to detail is evident in all phases from the first hello to the last farewell. This team displays passion, knowledge and a connection with each guest. Thank you Will, Louis and Cowboy Star for everything-----Richard & Patricia Latimer Phoenix Az
Shared the porterhouse for two, foraged mushrooms, cheesy grits, and steak tartare. Everything was incredibly good, albeit expensive.
Theit T-bone steak was cooked properly. However, the staff didn't know that T-bone goes with the bone that looked funny. Everything was perfect! Prices are less then the quality level!
Incredible food and vibe. No nonsense exceptional quality.
Good but overpriced A lot of options as good but more reasonable.
Our server was Joshua. From the start I knew by his pleasant demeanor that we would have better than just "good" service. He took the time to explain everything in great detail and seemed very eager to go above and beyond. Making sure our dining experience was exceptional. He always checked in with us at the select perfect moments (not while we were stuffing our faces). Before our food was served, he asked me (without me ever mentioning anything) if I'm vegetarian (which I am) based on the things I had orders. Just to ensure everything came out to my liking. We received complementary desserts and had good conversation with one of the chef's and other staff members. All were very friendly and so kind. After dinner, we walked half way down the street when Joshua came running up to us with my credit card in hand. I had forgotten it and he was kind enough to chase us down. Litterally. The food was superb and the staff, even better. Great job!
Had a good meal. Been here 3 times now in 5 years. Unfortunately never as good as the first time. It's just not worth all the hype and the $$. The sides could use some serious flavor. Bland mashed potatoes and 3 stalks of asparagus...meh. I had the filet. Again, just good, nothing to die for and no better than Flemmings or Donovans. The men had the 18 oz ribeyes. One was great the other was thin and tough. Creme brule was delicious bread pudding was okay. Service was good and friendly. Drinks, appetizers, salads and dinner for 4 w/2 shared desserts came to $500 before tip. It should have been better.
I have been here only three times, but it may be the best steak restaurant I have been to. The cocktails are great, and the food and service are first rate. It will cost a decent amount of money (budget for $150 a head).
WOW!!! Not sure what I can say but WOW. Wait I can't forget the General Manager William Fernandez, a very special man. He runs a tight ship and the food is out of sight. Let me first tell you that I am a trained chef from FCI in NYC. I had a great meal starting with steak tartare, which was brought to the table because I would never have order raw meat not knowing the restaurant quality. It was the BEST tartare I have ever had in my life. I was only going to taste it because it was sent to the table out of respect, but I ate the whole thing sharing half with my husband. Then we had simple salads which were great and then came out the MEAT. The skirt steak was the top of the top, I was thinking of the ribeye, but our great waiter(Glenn) when I asked him said the skirt steak was his choice. It was incredible! My husband grabbed the filet and also was great. I wish we had room for dessert, but we were stuffed. Thanks to William Fernandez and Glenn our waiter dinner will never be forgotten.
One of the best Happy Hours in Downtown San Diego! Get there early (3-6pm) as the bar is small. Top bites: sliders, mussels. And the steak frites at the bar is a delicious bargain
So many great experiences here, I should be writing multiple reviews. Bar and bartenders amazing. Steak amazing esp Wagyu. Very accommodating. Butcher shop is awesome get that A5 strip and Wagyu skirt.
If you're looking for a well prepared and well thought out menu, this is the place to eat. My wife and I stopped in, on 6/20/2018, and we enjoyed a great dinning experience. The staff is highly attentive and very knowledgeable about the menu and the items prepared. The wine list is very good. Be sure to ask about pairing if you're not familiar with the wine listed. Try the pork chop and cheese grits or the 23 day aged kobe beef. If it is avaible and in season, ask for the corn soup, you won't regret it! I will be returning for another great experience, thank you.
Very clean and pleasant restaurant. I sat next to the kitchen and never knew it was functioning. There was not even a sight of fumes or smoke.
You will not be disappointed. Price is worth the service and quality of this establishment... Will return.
Great atmosphere, and food is good. However a-little to trendy (fancy dishes) for me with respect to a steakhouse. When I go to a good steakhouse I expect a good assortment of good steaks and side dishes, and this restaurant has a good amount of choices but they are for the more adventurous such as Bone-Marrow that you scoop out of the bone. Overall a great restaurant but understand that they have a menu for the person who likes a broader palette, but if you are looking for the typical steakhouse you might want to check the menu here first to ensure this place is for you. Beautiful restaurant and woodwork inside the restaurant is amazing.
Are you kidding me? One of the best steaks I have ever eaten. Great service and menu. For a treat, sit at the chefs counter. Ignore the one star review from the girl who gives five stars to Buffalo Wild Wings
Very good steaks! I like the atmosphere and the wait isn't usually too bad. Their sides are yummy too.
Had dinner here with three friends last weekend. Very small restaurant in downtown San Diego that packs a punch. We ordered the dry aged rib eye, the Japanese wagyu (Melts like butter), and some other type of steak. The sides were okay but the steaks shined, cooked perfectly medium rare as well. Ordered a great bottle of wine that Keith suggested that was perfect for our meal.
An amazing experience to share with friends! Not only is the food delicious and the service phenomenal (seriously, the waiters know what to whisper in your ears to stimulate your appetite!), watching the entire kitchen and wait staff work together as a cohesive team was like watching an artistic, orchestral production! Highly recommended, and Cowboy Star may be my most favorite steak house in town now!
Fantastic meal! We will come back the next time we visit San Diego! The service and food is absolutely amazing!
Staff is always timely even when they have a full house. The service here is attentive. It has a great interior. I see why this place has so many good reviews.
This is one of the best steak restaurants in San Diego in my opinion. It may not be the fanciest and has a laid back feel but the food is top notch. Most of the steaks are from small farms all noted on the menu. They also have some extravagant steaks flown in from Japan (12oz Miyazaki Filet is $225!). I have had the Ribeye from Aspen Ridge and the NY Strip from Monson ranch and both were delicious. The bartenders make a mean Old Fashioned as well! There is also a butcher shop right next door so you can buy that Miyazaki Filet and grill it up yourself if you like!
I've been here a handful of times now. Great restaurant, great food, and great service. This last time we were sat at the Chef's table which I initially didn't like but it ended up being a great night with a great view of the kitchen watching how all of the food is prepared. The chef Matthew was in front of us and answered all our questions and I was able to watch him prepare the venison I ordered which turned out amazing. He never seemed annoyed or hesitated to answer any questions. It really gives you a better feel of what goes into prepping and cooking the food. Some of the food requires 24-48 hours of prep and cook time. Thank you Matthew that was the best Venison I've ever had and great experience. My favorite steakhouse in San Diego.
I ordered the duck and it was outstanding. 35 day aged prime rib was off the hook. Give it a try and I'll bet you go back!
By far, the best steakhouse in San Diego with the best service!
Unbelievable, best steaks, best service from Will, Garth, & Doug it's a must and sit at the bar don't be shy!
Very rude, dry meat, ugly personality from waiters. They told us a 3hr wait but when called they said 30 min. Why? I'd love to know.
We went there at 7 without booking. Dining area was fully booked so we dined at a table in a bar area. We ordered mussel, tartar steak and different kind of steak. Mussel is highly recommended as a starter.
Very nice, thx you
The food was so savory. Service is typically above par. The prices are fair for the quality of food. I can see why they have a lot of positive reviews.
Amazing service and amazing food! Cant say enough good things.
Nice food and cocktails. Very swanky place.
The service was excellent and so was the food. Yes, it is pricey, but you can tell the steaks are high quality and cooked perfectly.
Excellent experience. Steaks were perfectly cooked and filleted upon request. We started with a complimentary cucumber appetizer. Followed with mussels and steak tartare. Couldn't resist the toasted sourdough soaked in the mussel juice. We shared a wedge and a Caesar, which were accented with slices or pancetta. Delicious! The service was fantastic making it a perfect evening. Only drawback is no valet or attached parking so plan ahead. Looks small from the street and you might miss it but it's across the street from Grocery Outlet for reference.
Literally was kicked out because you can't talk on your phone? Wow, completely absurd, how is that different than talking to the person next to you? Truly an abusive environment. Bully people because they are worthless idiots.
First class service, amazing food (not just the steaks). You can't go wrong here at all!! Thank you Angie for making this place happen!!
Looking forward to coming back with my coworkers. If it was closer to my home I would be here often.
Such a great indie steakhouse. BISON BISON BISON. If you like steak, you have to try their BISON. It is super good. Ive been here many times. BISON and the duck, which are delicious. Now, Im not a huge fan of going to food specific places (steakhouses, seafood houses, etc) and eating something else, but in this instance, Cowboy Star does very well. People that I have been with have also had non steak items and been very impressed. The drink menu is very well done as well. Lots of pretty creative mixed drinks on the menu and decent wine options. Location is very convenient with parking on the street, across the street. And the service is absolutely incredible...and right on point. I would recommend anyone to go here for a great dining experience.
There are a lot of good steakhouses in San Diego, but the Cowboy Star is at the top of the list. We sat at the seats overlooking the kitchen and it was really fun. We convinced our waiter to give us extra bacon when he was making our salads, and they were spectacular. The filets were very tender, flavorable, and perfectly cooked. Great wine list. Excellent single malt scotch as well. Close to the Gaslamp/Petco. Our waiter was attentive and knowledgeable. We were at an Italian restaurant the night before and asked our waiter what he thought the best steak restaurant was in San Diego and he said the Cowboy Star. Glad he have us a great recommendation! Review update- I was in San Diego again and had the good fortune to have dinner at the Cowboy Star again. Still great! A little off the beaten path, but worth it!
Ribeye to d0 lol k hi
Everything was absolutely amazing!
Best steak I’ve had in a long time! You can’t go wrong with the ribeye or the skirt steak
Have been twice, and both occasions were great. Food and beverages we're top notch and the service was personal and authentic. A nice place without a snobby atmosphere, just what I was looking for for a great evening out.
Best Steakhouse in San Diego. Period.
everyone at our table was enjoying everything. nothing but pleasant experiences here.
Great food, service and atmosphere. I sat at the Chef's "Bar" and was able to watch my food being prepared, I loved it. I had the appetizer Steak Tartare, for the main course I had the Wagyu Skirt Steak and finally topped it all off with the bread pudding. All of it was amazing but the Skirt Steak is one of the best I've ever had.
Excellent food and service
This place is amazing, absolutely phenomenal steaks, the cuts to choose from are INSANE I’ve never had the chance to try such decadent cuts of beef. I had the dry-aged rib eye and it was the the most tender and delicious that I’ve ever had. If you want a great experience you NEED to make a reservation and ask for a specific table that you like, either at the counter where you can watch the kitchen or in the intimate booths that are PERFECT for romantic dinners. Also be ready to drop at least $100 per person, $130 if you go balls out apps, entrees, sides, desserts, and drinks. Honestly totally worth it.
Service is typically good. The prices are fair for the quality of food.
Awesome aged ribeye, sides were pretty good, wouldn't get the bison again though as it was pretty tough.
Great Lunch. Nice menu. Had steak salad. Service top notch. without asking they replaced my white napkin with a black one so I wouldn't have lint on my black pants.
The best, most consistent, locally owned restaurant in Downtown. Service is impeccable. The ingredients are top notch. The food is always executed properly. Great place for a casual lunch in a warm setting, a business dinner with important clients or a romantic date night with your love. The Cowboy Star never fails to impress.
Great food, great service. Definitely try the wagyu skirt steak and NY strip. The surf option with King crab was amazing.. Didn't know crab could be so tender. Old fashion is a good drink choice, especially if you like bourbon. The best appetizer I tried was the wagyu short ribs. Steaks come with mashed potatoes and green beans that are also excellent. Did not like the ribeye or bison as much as the other steaks I mentioned.
AMAZING. The best Steak I've ever had. Really great experience. It seriously was perfect. It tasted fantastic and the steak melted in my mouth. I've never even said that before in my life. It was so GOOD.
Great food and service. The best steak in town!
Would not seat us even though the restaurant was literally empty. There were people at one table. I believe that it’s because we had our 2 year old daughter with us. I will enjoy high end steaks other places.
Great ambience and impeccable service. Food served by attentive employees who know the menu and their business. Bison steak outstanding.
We came for the steak, and were definitely underwhelmed. The cook and quality of the steak were phenomenal, but the steak itself lacked any flavor. It may have been a fluke cut, or off night, but it certainly wasn't what we were expecting when paying $70 for a steak. However, the atmosphere and staff were excellent, and we would definitely be back, just not for steak.
Great steak and outstanding service
Excellent experience, service, food & drinks, i had the ribeye steak, good size portion, about $40, words cannot describe how good it was. My wife had the mushroom rissotto, pretty good choice if you don't eat meat. About $14. My recomended drink is the old fashion $12. For dessert we had the bread putting, not the best but ok. Next time well try something else.
If you want to feel special; go to Cowboy Star in downtown SD. The staff will insure this happens! The menue is filled with wonder on par with the best that I have had the privilege to visit. You should find a way to partake. If I have a complaint it is difficult to secure a reservation. The restaurant probably feels its a complaint it can live with...
Great food, cool atmosphere, great service
OVERPRICED tasteless tough steak. $90 for one steak and a glass of house red wine plus tip. I don't mind paying, but food was mediocre at best.
We've had several dinners here and have always been impressed with the service and the quality of the food. So, it was embarrassing to take friends there recently and hit it on what was hopefully an off night. The staff were all very pleasant, but we waited over 40 minutes between our appetizer and entrees, and our server never came to the table. It got to be funny as we all tried to catch his eye and he pointedly avoided us. When I asked the manager if there was a staff shortage in the kitchen, he replied there was a big event in town. Um, big events are scheduled in advance, so you can staff your restaurant accordingly! (My husband is in the business, so this excuse was met with disbelief.) I know the meat is the star of the show here, but the sides were really mediocre--OK for Outback, but not accompanying a $50 steak. So disappointed to see this in one of our go-to spots in San Diego.
Excellent food and service. Highly recommend!
The food was amazing and staff was awesome
Chocolate chip bread pudding, so good.
Prefer here over Ruth's Chris any day
I have a a new favorite stake house Great service.
I found this restaurant rather serendipitously through San Diego Restaurant Week. Not knowing what to expect, I was completely blown away by the food. They serve some of the best steaks I've ever had, and I'm originally from Texas. The service is quietly elegant and low key. I go back over and over again when possible. If I want to impress out of town guests, I take them here.
Great food and customer service. Food was exceptional!!
What an awesome spot! Mark was amazing and the chefs counter was a great experience. Very personal, management came out and engaged in a lengthy conversation. Best beet salad and an unbeatable chocolate chip bread pudding dessert. So good, we went back for lunch!
Possibly the best steakhouse in San Diego. Good wine list. Steaks made to perfection. Service and decor both excellent. Priced better than most SD steakhouses.
Went there for my birthday and couldn't have asked for a more perfect experience. Everything from the food to the service to the ambiance was phenomenal. Yes a little pricey but very worth it.
One of (if not THE) best meals we've ever had. Incredibly tasty!
THE best steaks EVER. Period.
I ate here in 2015 and I have to say, it was one of the best meals I have ever had. The food and service was excellent. I would highly recommend and I will go back. It is expensive, though. Be prepared to spend at least $250 for a family of 4.
While visiting San diego (from Georgia) I had the pleasure of dining here after looking on Google. I completely underestimated the restaurants capabilities and was pleasantly surprised with how well I were treated by the staff and how delicious the food was. The dry age steak is the way to go
BUSINESS MEETING CUSTOMER BEWARE WE WENT TO THIS RESTAURANT and although we had visited the evening before for a private room we got screwed and they put us in the main restaurant. Absolutely no compensation in any way from the restaurant. Extremely disappointed. The food and service were really great but when booking for business (not sure what more is required to do) to secure private room. We could not discuss with our customers privately during this business dinner. Never seen anything like this. VISITED AND CONFIRMED restaurant THE DAY BEFORE!!!! SCREWED the night of the event. Walter.
One of the best Steaks i ever had. Superb service as well.
Good food, bad managing. They made us wait for 35 minutes when we had a reservation! We went there for celebrate a birthday (left a note, told the hostes) no one even said happy birthday, I'm not even talking about birthday cake comman thing at any other restaurants.
High end and very nice. Pricy but the service staff is extremely well trained and the food is absolutely delectable
Very cozy spot and very expensive. The food is great so as the service
This is my favorite steak in San Diego hands down. The grass fed beef is the best I have had. The food, decor and service are top notch. Their mojitos are to die for. My sister is vegetarian and every time we have been they were able to accommodate her and make a delicious entree.
This review is for the butcher shop. Purchased two aged rib-eyes for NYE dinner at home. The flavor of these steaks is on par with the single greatest restaurant steak I’ve ever had, but this time in my own kitchen! Definitely buying more and planning on visiting the restaurant soon.
Wonderful good and service. Get a seat at the counter if you can.
Great food and service.
Exemplary quality, service and food. Come here every time I visit the states, can't help it. My favourite steak place in the entire world.
Came here with a group but we got very individual attention. Our server Jeromy is awesome, very knowledgeable about the food, the drinks, and very humorous at the same time. He can take a joke. Would have him every time.
Everything is very delicious here!! Also offers you a very nice ambiance and good service. Highly recommended.
Beautiful setting inside. The food and service are top of the line! Great dinner, highly recommend!
Amazing experience and food at Cowboy Star! We had our twin 5 year olds with us and the team went out of their way to make our dining experience spectacular! We even ate at the bar and was able to watch the culinary chefs working their art! 5 stars tonight! Thank you!
Great food atmosphere and service.
My expectations were high going in and man did they live up to it . Let me start by explaining why they didn’t get a 5star .... so what I didn’t like was that my 150$ wagyu steak while amazingly delicious had like a tendon running through it which made it chewy at certain parts. Normally I wouldn’t complain but for the price charged I would expect them to trim that out . Secondly the service while good could have been more friendly and I would have liked them to tell me I was ordering too much because I was with another person and the portions were large enough to serve a party twice our size . That said the meal was delicious, I especially loved the charcuterie and cheese .... out of this world good and so was the side of wild mushrooms . I will certainly come back . Job well done .
Amazing place for a meal! 6 stars. I am from Texas so I am no stranger to a great steak. I have to say this was probably the best steak I have ever eaten in my life. Cooked perfectly and aged to perfection. The steak tartar and snails were incredible. We also had the meatball (how great can a meatball really be), it too was delicious. The sumaie helped us pick a great wine. Our server Josh was attentive, I formative, and truly made our experience a memorable one. I highly recommend.
We had never been to cowboy star, but have heard nothing but great things! Their Japanese wage was incredible... mouth watering! It was $135 for 8oz, so be ready to spend if you’re looking for quality! That and the filet mignon came with sides, so that was great! They were standard potato and vegetable sides, but good to have. Their wagu pasta was pretty great as well! The Cesar has big anchovies on and in it, so be prepared for that if you order a salad. Great service, and old school steakhouse vibe. Would return for the wagu!
The menu here is really good. You will find a wide array of meats. If you are a meat lover this is your place. Another awesome thing here is the theme behind the decor, very western but keeping it classy. I do suggest you make a reservation because the place can get packed.
Food is good, not that different from Donovans or Ruth Chris but it is on the pricey side. Steak tartare is my favorite one.
Been here twice and both times solidify my opinion as this is one of the best steak restaurants in San Diego. Simply delicious! Be prepared to spend a pretty penny for the full experience; a steak, drink, and some sides to go with it. Also request for their "special" ice creams. Great service as well.
Great ambience. Food meat selection. Steaks didn't come out the correct temperature which for the price wasn't acceptable
If you want to eat at one of the best steak places in San Diego, this is it. I've been here about five times now and every time it was all delicious. I've ordered the dry aged ribeye and the NY strip, as well as the skirt steak. I would recommend getting the skirt steak with a side of chimichurri, and both the steak tartare and the bone marrow. One of the servers told us to order the tartare and the marrow at the same time ; those two dishes paired together were amazing. If you're stopping by in San Diego or you're a longtime local I would ask that you treat yourself and stop by here.
