I’ve been using Kelly Barkhurst Design since 2010 for an ongoing project that is extremely complex, requiring not only a designer’s artistic creativity, but also enormous computer skills. The project is an online family history book, now more than 600 pages and still growing, compete with audio, video and a large amount of hyperlinks. Kelly Barkhurst is one of those rare individuals who have both of these remarkable capabilities. I have worked with Ms. Barkhurst since 2006. I have saved some of this work not because I’m still in the business or in the industry, far from it. I save it because it’s so exceptional. Oh, sure I played some role in this brilliance, but Ms. Barkhurst is the real talent. The first thing that stunned me about Ms. Barkhurst, who at that time was a recent Masters in Fine Arts Design graduate, was her maturity and strategic perspective. Being 100 years older I have an age bias towards being good at business strategy. Kelly, however, quickly grasped the nature of where the business was and where it had to go to be successful. Strategy is both a “what-if” and a “winnowing” discipline; she was right alongside of me in both. This allows Kelly not only to produce highly relevant and astute results, but to do so quickly without a lot of false starts. She is fun to work with and is as committed; perhaps more than you are, to your success and making a difference in your business. She is versatile and because of her strategic strengths works easily in a variety of industries. We worked together in the high-tech world of forestry for several years and later in the hospitality industry for the number one inn in Stowe, Vermont. The inn business is surprisingly competitive and Kelly was essential in providing guidance in Web development, repurpose marketing, SEO, utilization of Social Networks, the development and deployment of Google AdWords, and the complete understanding of Google Analytics necessary to refine all of our marketing efforts. All of these items had to be choreographed so that each marketing campaign benefited from the reinforcement of all its components. This is the nature of marketing in the 21st century. Ms. Barkhurst not only choreographed the campaigns, she created them so that potential customers quickly fell in love with our message and our inn. Our introductory promotion for our tenth room – a one bedroom apartment – was entirely her idea.
