I have been taking my pets to Rau for well over twenty years. The facilities are clean, spacious and comfortable. I have always appreciated that there is a separate area for those bringing cats for veterinary care. Everyone I have encountered at Rau has been pleasant and helpful. Additionally we have always especially appreciated the great care, consideration and expertise of the medical director, Dr. Jane Kirchhoffer. I highly recommend her to everyone looking for a veterinarian.

This is only my second visit to Rau, and my first with my large American Staffordshire. Dr Murphy and assisting nurse know the breed and just gave him lots of positive praise. I appreciate this as the last vet I went to, I could tell she was not a fan of the breed. The service, diagnosis, and fees all work out to very manageable. You get a lot of value here at Rau and the nicest people. So a huge thumbs up for me.

I want to start off by saying that Rau Animal Hospital is the only group of veterinarians I’ve ever used in my life. My family and I have been taking all of our dogs there ever since we acquired our first puppy over 30 years ago. We noticed in more recent years that things started to go a little down hill with their business, but decided to continue going there and giving them the benefit of the doubt that they will improve their service the next visit. Unfortunately, this last visit was more than just bad, it made me never want to take my pet there again. I brought in my 5yr old Pug and new 10 week old bulldog puppy. Even though they were aware I was bringing in two dogs, they scheduled an appointment for me in the “small building”. I’ve never been in that building for any visit I’ve ever had. The room was uncomfortably tiny and not very clean. I also noticed that every other animal who had appointments in that building were cats. All the dogs were in the other building. This wouldn’t have mattered to me if everything went smoothly. Once we were in the room with the nurse, she proceeded to take each dog out of the room (probably because there wasn’t enough space in our actual room) one by one. When she took my pug out of the room (who was just in to get 2 vaccines) she told me that she was going to give him his scheduled vaccines. Then she said she needed to take the puppy out of the room to give him his shots as well. As she reached down to pickup the puppy, she banged his head against the underside of the patient table (because the room wasn’t big enough for her to even do her job) later causing a lump on his head. Then we asked about continuing heart worm medication for our pug who stopped taking it 6 months prior to our visit. She said in order to take the heart worm meds again that he needed to have a blood test first. They had to take the pug out of the room again to do the blood test. They brought the pug back in minutes later saying that she (the Dr.) forgot they already took his blood last time he was taken out of the room minutes before that. They had no reason to take his blood before! Why would they have done that?! Next, they claimed the puppy had to have one more vaccine but this time they could do that in the room with us there. I don’t know what was different this time around but we got to watch her give the vaccine. She pinched his loose skin and gave him the vaccine right under his skin. I’m no doctor but last time the vet told me that all vaccines needed to be injected into the muscle, not just under the skin. Why was that different this time?!?! So I left there with a $265 bill and no confidence that things were done correctly. It’s been almost a week since our visit and after calling a few times they were still unable to tell me the results of my pugs blood test. It’s really sad and disappointing to see how Rau has gotten worse over the years. I’ll never go back there and really hope that others realize their lack of professionalism before any serious problems arise. I never write reviews for any business, but this experience was so bad that I felt I needed to warn others. BEWARE!!

Our dogs had a disastrous fight on Christmas day. We were able to get in the next day even though we normally go to the Willow Grove office. The Doctor was so kind and she stayed extra late to operate on our little Dora. The surgery was well done and she healed perfectly. I've taken my cat here for her daily check ups and any other concerns. The building is very nice and inviting and the staff are all very pleasant. My cat can be a little nippy when she's handled by strangers but the doctors always know how to handle her and very surprisingly she is calm around them. Anybody's pet is in very good hands here.

I went to Rau for the first time. I wanted to switch because my aunt went there with her dog and I felt like I needed to find a vet that was closer to home. I am really excited about the switch. My prior vet was good too, but the staff made myself and my dog (Nelly) both feel comfortable during our visit. Nelly wanted to look out the window and they told her she could sit on the bench to do so to keep her calm. They offered her a few treats throughout her visit and were really happy to accommodate her. One thing I liked is that they didn't try to upsell me on a bunch of shots and products. She got what she needed and we were on our way.

I appreciate the consistently caring and gentle approach I’ve seen Rau’s vets have with my animals. They have great hours and I’ve found all of their staff to be caring and patient. It was difficult finding a new vet after a very bad experience with our prior vet. We learned about AAHA accreditation and searched exclusively for vets with that accreditation to ensure that what happened at our prior vet’s would never happen again. That’s how we found Rau. Knowing that Rau performs up to AAHA accreditation standards allows me peace of mind, and my experiences with Rau’s vets has only increased that peace of mind. Especially when our most senior cat had sudden and untreatable problems last December, our usual vet was not working that day but I could not have asked for more compassion, professionalism, and well-communicated information than the vets who did tend to our cat that day. I had not known prior that Rau has a bereavement room, but I learned firsthand that day and it was so very helpful to have the time in that special space to spend our last hours with our cat. I am grateful to be within driving distance of Rau, and will continue to take my animals there as long as they continue doing what they do as mentioned above.

I first came to Rau to care for my cat of many years, when I woke up and she was bleeding. She needed immediate help and other locations wouldn't see her as she hadn't been in care. Rau agreed to see her, she had cancer. I felt the staff were very caring and delivered passionate care for her through her end of life. Having a comfort room to grieve with your loved companion was an experience that I will treasure, along with her paw print. As a first time pet owner, I wasn't aware of the neccessity of regular visits for an indoor pet. Since then we have adopted 2 lovely girls. Both cats are seen and treated with the same compassionate care. Rau's staff are the best.

I also appreciate the time the dental technician (Vicky) took for a follow-up consultation and recommendations for alternative treatment options before recommending additional dental surgery. We've had a mixed experience with Rau. I generally believe that the staff and doctors are genuinely devoted to their patients and customers and they have their best interests in mind. But some of the doctors seem to engage in quite a bit of cross-selling of services and products that they offer/carry in their office. We've also experienced lengthy wait times for scheduled appointments, usually with no explanation or apology for the inconvenience. I also have done some informal comparisons with friends and colleagues and Rau appears to be markedly more expensive than other alternatives. That said, their care is consistently effective and they have an extensive schedule -- we rarely wait more than a day for an appointment. We'll keep bringing our current dogs to them given our history with them, but if we were to adopt another animal, I'd be inclined to start him with a different practice.

We could not have asked for more thorough care for Seamus and Beans. Easy access from parking lot to front door was a bonus and even though I was worried about road traffic, it was no problem. Being able to take both dogs together was great and we felt like all of our concerns were met with kindness and expertise. Leaving through the lobby filled with so many incoming pets was a little scary, but not unexpected. We will be coming back from now on. We learned some things during the visit and the services offered make this a one stop vet service all around. Thank you!

My mom typically visits Rau. She has taken my dog there to get treated for worms so they have her records. I took my dog to a hospital where I had moved two days ago and she received vaccines to get her up to date. Today she started throwing up and had diarrhea so I was concerned for her health. I did not fully trust the place I went to originally so after I called them and they seemed to only suggest things that would monetarily benefit them and not necessarily help my dog, I called Rau since my mom trusts them so much for a second opinion. The I explained to the woman on the phone that my mom takes her dog there and that my dog has been there before. I explained the situation and asked if I should be worried. The woman on the phone had a horrible attitude because she believed I had never been there before. She asked me her age and weight and breed then asked why she received so many vaccines which scared me and made me thing this was a horrible situation and worse than I originally thought. She told me they had no openings and I explained I wasn't looking for an appointment I wanted to know if it was serious or if I could calm down and if I SHOULD make an appointment. She then proceeded to tell me she did not know if it was normal for an animal to react to vaccines... Why do you work at a vet if you do not know this answer? She said AGAIN that because there are no records on my dog there she couldn't help and there were no appointments available. Question: If my dog has been seen by you before and I am explaining I do not trust the vet I brought them to, AND YOU'RE A HOSPITAL... wouldn't there be a way to see a sick animal if it is serious? Other question, if there is a way to see a very sick animal because you're a hospital but her issues are not deemed serious... why wouldn't they just say that she is probably fine and to call back if it was worse? I do not know if getting sick after a vaccine is serious. But you should. My mom called shortly after and a nurse got on the phone and explained this was normal. Why couldn't the woman on the phone do me the same courtesy? Is it because she believed I wasn't a patient even though I am? You should not be called a hospital if you don't help all animals regardless of patient status.

I had an emergency with some homeless kittens who appeared to be very sick. Rau was awfully nice over the phone, made time to see them that day. They were one of four veterinary practices I called and were the most professional and helpful over the phone. In person the care confirmed that impression.

I'll never set foot in this place again. I went there looking for help euthanizing our 13-year-old cat, Kitty. While making an appointment for their "Comfort Room," they seemed sensitive and understanding. When I arrived, they asked me to sign a waiver for cremation, then proceeded to conduct a full medical exam on Kitty, only to judge she wasn't ready to go yet. I was made to feel like a monster for even thinking of it. The whole experience was designed for Rau's comfort, not mine or my cat's. We went looking for compassion and were given self-righteousness instead.

This was my first time there. I was not happy with my previous vet office. Everyone at Rau was friendly and welcoming and even the reception area came out to greet my dog. Our first encounter with Rau tells the whole story. Our older cat George was in the early stages of kidney failure. One morning we found that one of his back legs was completely lame. We called our "regular vet" and they said 'sorry, can't see him, good luck.' Called Rau, where we had never been before, and they said to bring him right over. I went to the "regular vet" to pick up his records. They had no patients waiting, and the staff seemed to be twiddling their thumbs. We arrived at Rau and they clearly hustled to fit George in between regular appointments, given his condition. They got George sorted out that day and helped us with his care until his last happy day. Rau has been our regular vet ever since and our cats have received wonderful care there. Their facility is terrific and the care they give our pets is really thoughtful. I especially love their attention to pain management, which some vets don't worry about. Pooch had a brutal case of interdigital hotspots. All the staff were super friendly and very dog focused. Great communication at every step of evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment planning (Dr Rosenblatt, and her very tech assistant). Belt and suspenders treatment plan because it wasn't clear what the underlying issue was, but super effective outcome. Highly recommend.

My family has used Rau for two generations. I never question the care provided for any of my pets threw the years. I love the hours that they are opened, more than any other vet in the area. You definitely pay a higher price for a visit then some other vets. What I also like is that they will work within your means. I have some vets at the practice that I like better then others and miss Mark Fox a lot! The reason for a four star rating vs a five is that I have had a few incidents and practices that are no longer given. My biggest incident was when I put one of my dogs down years ago, I asked for the ashes back however the tech checked the wrong box and I never got it. Then this year I had to put a cat down where I didn't get her ashes back but asked for a paw print and they never did it. These things mean a lot to a pet owner! The only other problem I have is that they no longer offer a multiple pet discount unless you bring them in at the same time. Until recently, I had 6 dogs and 3 cats and I never get a multiple pet discount anymore! When I use to see Mark Fox he had on my account to always give me a multiple pet discount even if I just brought one pet in. When someone has this may pets like I do, I think at the very least they should still be giving me this discount. Ten percent isn't much but it's something. I'm not sure when they took this away, but I would like to see this discount come back when you have as many pets as I do.

After disappointing experiences with many closer vets, I drive 40 minutes each way to take our pets to Rau. The office is welcoming and well-run, the doctors and friendly and knowledgeable. And they've never pushed us into any treatment, always provided options. When it became apparent that our last cat was finally losing his battle with cancer, we took him in to be put down and were greatly relieved to find they have a whole room for that; you can sit with your pet, on a sofa, and take as long as you need.

They helped us completely resolve a problem with our cat not using her litter box - identifying a combination of health issues and behavior that were at the root of the issue. The employees LIED to us ! They said after my Bella’s surgery, we would be able to find out where she went and if it was a good home. Also, that we could even contact her new owners but when I called the next day the secretary said she wasn’t allowed to release any information regarding Bella! I couldn’t believe it. Our Bella had to get surgery and unfortunately we couldnt afford the procedure so the hospital said they could do it but we wouldn’t be able to keep Bella. Then, the vets blatantly lied to us ! One vet we had was Jennifer and I forgot what the name of the other vet. It was a terrible experience.

This is a great place with the most caring and loving staffs. They were always so helpful over the phone and in person. My dog's veterinarian Dr. Brianne O'Loughlin was extremely attentive and made sure we understand the instructions of caring for my dog for the past two months. Dr. Brianne O'Loughlin was very knowledgeable about my dogs existing condition in which she constructed a comprehensive treatment plan that was beneficial to my dog wellness and economical for me. Their hours are great and allow everyone to get into the office even with challenging schedules. Their prices are fair and reasonable. I feel especially assured that my dog has gotten the best care and treatment she could possibly have received. They helped me and my family through a difficult time when we had to put our dog down. They were really respectful and gave us time to process her death. I have nothing but praise for this veterinary hospital and the wonderful staff and Doctors. I highly recommend them!

She often needed to be seen on an emergency basis and long into the night.
