The care at BEVS is very good and the vets did the best they could for our dog, Danny. However, my advice to other pet owners is to use your intuition before making any decisions. Danny’s kidneys were not functioning and the vets were not certain why. None of the tests came back positive. He stayed in ICU for several days and was not improving. We were told that he was suffering and that we should consider euthanasia. We agreed, but asked to spend an hour with him outside first. During that time with him alone, I felt strongly in my gut that he had a better chance of recovering at home. We took him home and continued giving him antibiotics just in case there was infection. Within 4 days he started improving and within two weeks he was back to normal. That was October of last year and he is doing perfectly. Trust your gut!!

The nurse an docs were very generous an kind.

Can't say enough good things about BEVS. It was time to put my dog down Monday after 10+ good years. Heart breaking, gut wrenching experience, but they were total pros. The vet tech said she remembered our boy, Chester, either from the porcupine incident, or the time he swallowed a deer antler and couldnt quite pass it. She said you can't forget a good Chessie, and even cried with us. The vet himself was a total pro. He had such a calming tone when he explained the procedure, that even I stopped bawling and was really put at ease by his bedside manner. The best part was that we went late at night, about 11pm. We were able to enjoy a beautiful last day with Chester. He went for all the walks he could handle, waded in the pond, we napped together in the sun, people came and visited with us until dark, we grilled him up all the venison tenderloin he could eat. There was absolutely no rush. I hadn't eaten all day so I even stopped for a burger before heading over, not worried about making a stupid appointment and watching the clock on what was already a really difficult day. We could take it entirely naturally and make sure we didn't miss a thing. We got there at about 11 pm and he was already tired. We asked to do the procedure outside, he walked and peed on all the trees, and then laid down on his blanket when he was tired. We rapped him and and cuddled with him until the vet came out, chester was sleeping naturally after a great, long last day. The needle was so smooth he didn't even wake up or whimper from his slumber, and it was over in minutes. It really couldn't have possibly gone any better, the procedure there, or the day we were able to get in before heading over. Personal service, professionalism, great bedside manner. To those balking about price: this is an emergency service, and so it is higher priced. TBH I wish that they could treat me if I had a medical issue, the level of care that they offer, when you analyze what is really being provided, seems like a tremendous value for the price. Owning animals is expensive if you plan on treating them like members of the family and providing them care, bear that in mind when considering utilizing these services. But the staff is all pro, tbh I have had better experiences with BEVS than my regular vet.

Just moved to the area from out of town. One of my dogs had ACL surgery, (CBLO Procedure) and was starting to show signs of a problem on that leg. We met with Dr. Annie Kluetmeier who spent the time to understand the surgery that was done, get his records from the surgeon, do XRAY's and work with the surgeon to determine the right course of action which was to extract one of the pins from his leg that was starting to protrude from the skin. Not only was the staff caring and helpful, but wanted to take the time to make sure they were doing the right thing by my dog. Their prices IMHO were reasonable for the services provided especially late at night, when we didn't have other options. Thank You for the help, kindness and professionalism.

I brought my cat here where she was diagnosed with cancer. Although she was terminal, Dr. Hartnett and his staff gave her the best care possible! They are all committed to animals and it's obvious that they love what they do!

All of the staff at BEVS was understanding and very supportive when I brought my 15 year old cat in. He had suddenly gone into congestive heart failure and fluid was flooding his lungs making it very difficult for him to breathe. He was terrified and so was I, but they took him in immediately and were extremely gentle with him which both of us appreciated. It was a horrible experience ONLY because my cat was sick. I trusted them whole heartedly and they provided immediate and wonderful care for him and helped him to live another six months!

I have been here several times and am always impressed by the knowledge, support and love for all their patients, both owned and rescued. I am so grateful this service is available.

Had a strange and uncomfortable experience here. The vets insisted our dog take potentially liver and kidney damaging painkillers for a broken toe, accusing us of not caring for our pups wellbeing.

I had to bring my cat to be put down in the month of April. I do still owe me money to this hospital for a procedure that was supposed to help him. However they couldn't tell me why my cat was instructed with failing kidneys. And before I knew it was the flouride he became obstructed again. They put him on meds and a diet which couldn't keep up with all the contaminated water he was drinking. I'd ask that you spread the word on the dangers of flouride, because not only did this hospital get a donation for something precious I lost, I still owe them money for the procedures. And they didn't let me see him while he was being put down, they only gave me time to say goodbye and told me I had to wait for them to put him down. They could definitely do better, and I ask that anyone who takes the time to read this can help spread the word.

I see reviews saying that the writers surprisingly had to leave BEVS without their cat. I too surprisingly had to leave without my cat and I am utterly dismayed at BEVS's service! They may give more attention to dogs than they do cats. I will never trust them with a cat again. I recommend that you do not bring your cat here if it can be avoided! My kitty was 13, we brought her in because she was having trouble breathing. First they immediately took her into the back for an exam where we were not allowed to follow. I did not appreciate this! I've always been allowed to stay with my animal! Soon after this, the vet came out (we still can't see our kitty) and diagnoses her with either cancer or heart disease, but she couldn't see anything that could prove it! She gave us some options, but firmly suggested we put her down. We went with the other option of doing a minor surgery to get rid of some fluid build up, which could act as a temporary help to alleviate her heavy breathing, and then the vet would be able to find what the underlying problem was. This is where things went very wrong! We sat in the waiting room (because again we are not allowed to be with our cat), when the sound of loud, startling barking of dogs erupted. Very soon after, the vet came back in and said our cat got spooked and jumped off the table and ran. She said she was turning purple, (lack of oxygen due to extra stress paired with already not being able to breath well), and was drooling (a sign of panic), and the operation was failed. If they were to make a second attempt, they would have to sedate her more and in her condition she would likely not survive... so they said. When we went into the back to give kitty a goodbye, I saw that their operatory is completely open, meaning, that they were going to operate on my kitty while handling yapping puppies and dogs in the same room. Any cat would have already been spooked in this situation, but they were handling barking dogs in the same area?! Of course the cat will freak. Of course the operation was a failure! I don't believe they know how to handle cats! I find this totally and completely unacceptable. The vet then said the only thing left to do was put her down. We knew that either way our cat most likely would die soon. The vet gave us lots of deciding time, which was nice, but every time she came back in and we told her that we really wanted to take our cat home she was very insistent that we shouldn't do that and that she should be put down. I felt so coerced! My cat was in MUCH better shape before we brought her into the clinic. I wish more than anything that we wouldn't have brought her in at all and would have just kept her at home giving her peace to do what she needed to do. We just went in to see If there was anyway we could help her, Being in this situation and seeing the bill escalating extravagantly, and nothing being done but making our cat worse, was not the way I wanted her last moments to be. I know we could have insisted on taking her home, but the vet kept repeating very ugly possible scenarios that may have made it harder on our cat, but what our cat had gone through at the clinic was far worse. We were so confused and I still feel awful! I will allow the vet her opinion, but I do not believe she was at all adept at handling cats. Afterwards my mother and I stepped back into the private waiting room, we burst into tears and a nurse sticks her head in and goes "uh, you know you can leave now right?"... I will NEVER step foot in BEVS ever again.

Brought my 2.5 Y/O dog in after a day of traveling and running in warmer than usual weather south of VT because he had blood in his urine. BEVS staff on the phone were helpful as we were in transit and they quickly got us situated in a room with a tech when we arrived around midnight. The staff worked together very well and quickly put together a recommended plan, explained it thoroughly, answered my questions, and twice updated me with an estimated billing amount. The care provided was excellent, professional, and compassionate. Thanks to the great staff.

My 12 year old English Bulldog (yes, he's 12!) went to BEVS for an endoscopy and colonoscopy due to blood in stool. We were very hesitant to have him put under anesthesia due to his age and breed and asked on 3 separate occasions if a polyp was found if it would be removed during the procedure so that he wouldn't have to go through the process again. Each time we were assured that the polyp would be removed. After the procedure I received a call that they did find a polyp but they could not remove it because they "couldn't find" the cable necessary for the tool. ??!!?? What kind of doctor, better yet a board certified one, begins a procedure without insuring all tools and equipment are available and at the ready??? I would NEVER have subjected my dog to that had I known they wouldn't be able to remove what we had suspected was a polyp. So we were charged the highest amount of the estimated range and paid over $2000. He still has the polyp and will need it removed, requiring he go under anesthesia again. I'm still unsure why we were charged when the procedure wasn't completed as were told it would be. To add to all of this, when we went to pick up our dog there was conveniently no one available who had been present for the procedure to answer our many questions. The monetary charges for services at BEVS are astronomical. The staff were not helpful when we were scared and upset. No one was available to answer questions. Their entire focus was on insuring that I paid the thousands of dollars. It's not even about the money. It's about the fact that they were unprepared for a procedure and never should have gone forward with anesthetizing our dog without consulting us first. He shouldn't have to go through the stress and risk of another procedure because of their negligence and incompetence.

Truly a remarkable place full of amazing staff - Dr. Lisa Kiniry, Emily and the entire team at BEVS went above and beyond for my family and I during a difficult time!! We went in not knowing we would be leaving with one less member of our family, but we could not be more grateful for the empathy displayed and the support given to us through the process.

I was very impressed with the critical care our dog received at BEVS. Our 12 year old mini Schnauzer became ill suddenly and had extremely low blood counts, fever, vomiting, lethargy. Our regular vet referred us to BEVS for hospitalization with round the clock critical care. The BEVS techs and vets gave us regular updates, early morning phone calls to let us know how she was overnight, answered all our questions in detail, and showed sincere concern for our beloved pet. She was there for a few days. Our dog was not at all stressed to return for a followup blood test which tells me a lot. I would not hesitate to bring my dog there again for an emergency or hospitalization. Thanks to all of the staff at BEVS.

I can’t say enough good things about BEVS! They genuinely care about your pets as if they were their very own. I brought my binge eating Great Dane who chewed through 3 remotes, a pack of batteries and a bag of whoppers for a emergency visit and Dr. Amanda Rutter and her team took such great care of him. Absolutely fantastic service. The entire team took such wonderful care of my Harley. I highly recommend them to everyone.Thank you BEVS for the wonderful work that you do.

Our beloved dog was hit by a car late on a Sunday afternoon. Our regular vet recommended BEVs because of the range of options their advanced facility would be able to provide. The staff was professional, kind and took care of our needs as well as made sure our dog was comfortable. We were given ample information and space to consider our options and when the decision was made to euthanize our dog the Vet and staff were caring and kind. Had surgery or other intervention been an option I would've felt 100% confident in their ability and training.

This place should be ashamed of themselves for taking advantage of pet owners in a very vulnerable state so they can drain their pockets. They charge excessive prices and when they make mistakes and you have to bring your pet to another vet to fix their mess they won't even try to make things right. Shame on you!!!!

Had a very bad experience here a few years ago, and since then have avoided using these pseudo-vets. I took my dog in with an abcessed anal sac (it was very enlarged, tho not leaking) on a Saturday... and had to take the dog to my regular vet early Monday because the supposed "treatment" at BEVS had done NOTHING to mitigate the problem. I subsequently spoke to the owner of BEVS, whom I thought I knew and respected, but he had turned into an evil dwarf since purchasing the practice, and refused to refund any of my money.

Lisa Yaeger

We brought our dog to BEVS late one weeknight after he attacked a porcupine. We called to say we were on the way about 45 minute out, and the woman who answered the phone was very professional and helpful. This was a severe attack ("one of the worst they had seen," according to the vet), and he had to be put under for a few hours. I feel the care he received for this procedure was adequate, although we did end up taking him to our vet a week later to have more quills removed. The first problem occurred when he was back with the vets and apparently a back toe nail got caught in a floor grate, and it was pulled out. The vet said this grate had been a problem before and she had complained months ago. The second problem occurred when he was given a non-steroidal med at check-out even though he's on a steroid currently for allergies. I had indicated that on the check-in form, but either no one read that or didn't catch it; I had to point out the conflict upon reviewing the med list. After the severity of the attack and those two mistakes, not one person called to inquire as to his condition. The only call was to offer a refund of $20 for the med that we apparently paid for which he couldn't even take. In contrast, our vet called the next day to ask about him. I'm glad BEVS is there, but I wish they showed more care and had a higher standard of quality than what was exhibited. Very disappointing. My direct complaint to them was never acknowledged.

We had to bring our cat to be put to sleep in the very early hours of the morning. We found the staff to be very considerate and caring. They talked us clearly through what to expect and gave us all of the time we needed to say goodbye. We were able to stay with our cat through every stage of the procedure, so we were able to see the high level of care afforded to our cat in his final moments. While we wish we hadn't had to be there under these circumstances, we are extremely happy and appreciative of the care they provided and the understanding they showed at such a difficult time.

They misdiagnosed my girl. She died a week later. While I understand that it's tough to treat an animal when you're not the regular vet, I fail to understand how you not take the UTMOST care to get it right. They simply concluded that "blood in urine" was a UTI despite there being none of the usual signs (frequent urination etc.) and only did the most basic of all urine tests - namely testing for blood in the urine. They didn't test for cultures and instead, simply sent us home with an antibiotic. Lo and behold, it wasn't a UTI, it was acute renal failure. Which may have been treatable if diagnosed correctly (which only took our actual vet minutes by doing a blood test and not jumping to conclusions) but alas, BEVS dropped the ball and our girl died. Never in a million years will I bring another pet to BEVS.

We had a great experience here. They quickly figured out what was happening with our puppy, which was thankfully nothing serious, and got a treatment plan put together for her. In and out in under two hours and little Bailey is already showing signs of feeling much better! So glad we took the trip out, and the cost wasn’t too bad for what we needed either. Less than a typical vet visit is for us! Couldn’t recommend BEVs more for any emergency visit.

BEVS has repeatedly severely misdiagnosed my dogs. I have been unfortunate enough to need emergency vet care a few times over the past couple of years as I have 5 rescue dogs and frequently foster. I have submitted complaints to the hospital to no avail. It amazes me that this place is allowed to operate with such low standards of care and charge the prices that they do. The TV Board of Veterinary Medicine really needs to step in here - no other organization (including the BBB, American Vet Med Assoc, or even the governor) have any jurisdiction. A few examples; my French Bulldog was born with IVDD (as many are) a degenerative genetic diseases that causes their spinal discs so spontaneously rupture leaving the dog paralyzed and in excruciating pain. The first time this happened to our Frenchie we brought her to BEVS because immediate treatment of pain meds and steroids is essential to avoid lifelong peralysis. The vet took xrays and examined our dog but wouldn't listen to us - instead, the vet insisted our dog had an upset stomach and would only give her pepcid. We had no choice but to wait until our vet office opened 2 days later where she was immediately diagnosed with the shattered disc and underwent spinal surgery 6 hours later. The delay due to BEVS misdiagnosis caused our dog life long nerve damage. Another time, our male American Bulldog ate a chewed and injected a stick he found in the yard. Almost immediately he began vomiting, which he did 6 times and then he lost consciousness. I ran to the car and called BEVS on my way (it's a 10 min drive). I get there and they immediately take my dog into the back. I wait for 45 min and the vet comes out and says my dog has somewhat regained consciousness and that his blood tests show he had high levels of toxins in his system. I asked if they were going to give him activated charcoal and the vet refused stating 'no, we are not going to trest the toxins because we do not know what caused him to be poisoned'. The vet did not believe that trees can be poisonous to dogs. There are over 200 kinds of trees that are poisonous to dogs, including blue spruce and box elder - both very common to VT. Again, because of the veterinarian's low level of knowledge and refusal to treat the toxins, my dog suffered and we had to keep him hospitalized on fluids for 2 days (cost of over $1,000).

On Saturday I went to the vets yo see what was wrong with my dog. I could tell she wasn’t feeling good. There they took x-rays and blood work. After looking at the x-rays they told me my dog had an infection in the uterus. They told me that I needed to go to BEVS for an emergency surgery because if it bursts than my dog could die. They figured with what they did there would save me money. Once I got to BEVS I was shortly put into a room and waited. Then they came out with a cost of $4,000. I was told $2,000 when I left and another $2,000 when I pick my dog up. Do they think I am rich or made of money. The nurse there kept coming in and out of the room like every 15-30 minutes wondering what was going on. They have like a pet credit card and Scratch Pay, but you have to have really good credit to be approved which we don’t and a lot of people don’t. I had my husband call them to talk to them. I called the vet I came from and they said I couldn’t wait till Monday to have the surgery. So we had to make the decision of putting our poor 7 year old German Shepard down. When my husband talked with the doctor and said we could come up with the $2,000 now, but couldn’t come up with the other $2,000 till Wednesday the doctor told him that to hold her for that long it cost $500 a day so now the price just went up. That’s not right. So my husband told the doctor to put our dog down and she made him feel like he was a bad person for wanting that. Well sorry but not everyone has thousands and thousands of dollars put aside. We all have our own bills and most of us live paycheck to paycheck. They didn’t act like they cared at all while I was there. They acted like they just wanted the money. I had been there before for my male German Shepherd last year and they gave me hard time then. At that time I had my daughter with me and we were in tears because we didn’t know what to do or how to come up with the money they were asking for. Luckily I had a couple friends who came to our rescue and helped us out. This time around we didn’t have anyone to help us. After putting my dog down they might of waited like 10-15 minutes than came back into the room to see if I needed more time. At that point I was done and just wanted to leave. I am going to try and avoid this place as much as I can. I wasn’t very happy.

Caring, knowledgeable and top notch emergency vet hospital we are very lucky to have this place in our area. The staff is very caring and we felt we had the best surgeon and oncologist for our boxer they saved his life. Every step was explained thoroughly and thought out with time for us to make our decision on the options that were offered. Communication was ongoing with our local vet so they were always informed on BEVS medical care. They took incredible care of him and we are so very grateful. Dempsey says thank you !

Marcel Etienne

Excellent service! They went above and beyond and were extremely kind and understanding.

Tara Maccagnone

The prices are high alright... 150 to 1000 percent mark up on testing and medication charges compared to other emergency hospitals. Also, this is the ONLY emergency vet in the area. How do these people sleep at night knowing they take advantage of people financially in their time of need. I brought my puppy there, and while they did treat my poor guy, they charged me 2000 for iv fluids and oxygen. 2000 dollars! Who has that kind of money? I have called other facilities in other states and the surrounding areas and even other vets were astounded at the prices. Go there only if you absolutely have to. Expensive is not the right word.

My family unexpectedly had to put our cat down 1/6/19 at BEVS. I cannot express how grateful we are to the staff who helped us. They were professional, kind, compassionate, and patient with us. They gave us privacy and plenty of time to say goodbye to our kitty. They were wonderful. This was incredibly hard for my family, and they helped us through each and every moment of it. They even sent us a hand written card in the mail afterwards. It's clear that the staff at BEVS care deeply for animals.

We cannot thank the ladies at BEVS enough for fixing up our little pup (9 weeks old!) yesterday after a nasty run-in with an adult dog who bit him. It's Memorial Day weekend and we were in town for my fiance to run the Burlington Marathon. When he got bit, I immediately searched online for any place nearby that was open. These ladies had a great website and great reviews.... answered the phone and were so nice. Talked me off the ledge about what I could/should do before getting to them. When we got there, we walked right in and the lovely girl at the front desk (who was also the person on the phone) was so nice. As were the two doctors (Amanda Rutter and Emily) who took his vitals, gave him a shot to numb the pain, clipped and cleaned his wound, gave him an exam to make sure everything else in/around his mouth was ok, and gave us meds for the next week. We really liked that they did everything they could to make sure it was a non-traumatic experience for him because he's so little--so he won't fear the vet in the future. They talked us through everything and were incredibly patient and communicative and kind. And, in terms of pricing, we were pleasantly surprised that it was just $200 for two courses of meds, the injection, the emergency visit, and the clip/clean! We wish we lived in Burlington! Thank you, BEVS. Hueco is feeling much better today and is getting back to his rambunctious self. Emily + Doug

My cat had asthma attack on Sunday and we went to BEVS. The Dr. was very professional and gave my cat a shot. The cat was back to her happy self in a couple hours. The fee was reasonable too.

BEVS has repeatedly helped my pets, who always seem to have medical issues on Sundays when everyone else is closed. YES, it is very expensive - but if you've ever had to pay a bill for a visit to a HUMAN emergency room, it's pretty clear that you're paying for the availability of the best possible care...And, at BEVS, getting it.

Rude, overpriced, and dirty. The minute that I walked into BEVS I was hit with a foul smell and the place was dirty. We had a VERY long wait time. They charge you over $100 just to look at your pet, but you have to wait for a long time before they provide service. They are a poor excuse for an "emergency" veterinarian hospital. The ladies at the desk were friendly, but the vet was not; all I felt they cared about was draining you of your money, and not about my cat. They suggested a bunch of unnecessary tests; tests that I felt were unrelated to her illness; they did not explain what the tests were for. They are way more expensive in comparison to a regular veterinarian hospital. The exam was half-assed, and they couldn't properly hold my pet. I had to hold my pet myself as they examined her. They did not do a proper exam; they did not examine her fully (her ears, etc.) Take your pet to their primary vet, don't waste your time or money at BEVS. It was an emergency, my cat's primary vet was unavailable as it was a Sunday. I feel that I was taken advantage of because I was in a dire need to have my pet seen. I would not recommend taking your pet here.

Glad to have 24 hr option but... my 18 year old cat wandered over to my neighbors yard. My kind neighbors, not realizing that this elderly cat (with dementia, mind you) was ours, brought him to BEVS because "he was so dehydrated he could barely stand". The vet on duty at BEVs told our neighbor that he assessed Monkey (our cat) to be 5-7 years old. This alone gives me pause. Monkey will be 19 in September - with cataracts, kidney disease, arthritis and more. I appreciate my sweet neighbors for helping our boy but BEVS - what the heck?

Lauren White

The people who work here are absolutely great! My biggest issue is when we checked in I was given a range of the potential cost but was told I would be in the low end of that range unless something came up. I had 4 phone conversations with the vets while my pet was here and they never mentioned deviating from the price. So I was surprised to find out I owed more than 300$ more than anticipated. One of the reasonings being you get charged for every new vet that comes on shift so I got hit with that fee 6 times in the 43 hours my pet was there... a little ridiculous. I figure the fee would be based on how many nights he was there. They also made decisions about using shots versus pills for pain based on personal preference even though the pills are cheaper, without consulting me. They are clearly pet people here and are so nice and helpful. I understand this service does not come free and I assume the responsibility when owning a pet but it would be nice to fix some of these financial pieces

My dog was hit by a car at 1am last year, rushed her to BEVS since they were the only place open. I was told that the cost to fix my dog would be well over $10,000. My only option was to put her down. They were great about giving me time with her and saying goodbye. Now comes the messed up part. With it being 1am, I ran out of my house with nothing on me except $200 in cash. They told me it would cost around $500 to put her down, this was coming from the Tech that worked there. An hour before she was put to sleep the actual VETERINARIAN said she would only charge me $350 because it was a freak accident and she felt bad. I told this to the Tech who completely ignored me and didn’t verify with the Vet the price given. Now all I could give them was $200 at that point. I’m crying and heart broken and they insist I call someone at 2am to pay the rest of my bill which at this point was over $1,000 cause of xrays and walk in fee etc. they also had me SIGN UP FOR A CREDIT CARD AT 2am! Well needless to say I didn’t get approved. So I asked to be billed and they made me sign a paper saying I’d be back in the am with the rest of the money. Oh and after they put my 2 year old dog to sleep they MADE ME TAKE HER BODY HOME because I didn’t have enough money at the time to put her in their freezer. That was the most messed up part of this whole thing. You guys couldn’t even hold her body for 5 hours till I came Back with the money!!!! I’m sure your freezer wasn’t full at that time. I hope none of my pets experience another emergency cause I can’t stand the thought of going there again.

ENS SI

Avoid this place if at all possible. You will pay out the #!* for anything and everything. Our small dog was having seizures, they charged us over $1,000 for multiple tests, with no diagnosis or future recommendations. Our other dog is having trouble breathing (Chihuahuas are prone to narrowing airways) tonight, and he's quite old...it's time. They just quoted me $272 to euthanize (not keeping the ashes)...they say they MUST do an exam etc. which costs more. When I say we can't afford that I proceed to get a lecture that I can't let my dog suffer and that they take Care credit (not an option for us). Sorry but that price is highway robbery. Waiting to take to our own vet in the morning.

Catherine Kaczor

Brought my 13 y/o beagle who’s nose had been bleeding for over 24 hours. They were prompt and assessed his situation perfectly. Nurse Morgan was wonderful. I don’t see why people are complaining about pricing...it’s an animal emergency clinic, of course it’s going to be a little more expensive. **IF YOU EXPLAIN YOU HAVE A FINANCIAL SITUATION, THEY WILL WORK WITH YOU!!!** that is so important! They worked with me to make sure I didn’t go over budget and actually told me it would be better to get another vet opinion first. They let me go free of charge. Great experience.

We were sad with devastating news from our general small town vet that our 15 yr old dog had bladder cancer. We had no other information on location or stage just to prepare to euthanize our pet within days to week. With our pup still active, happy girl we just couldn't fathom doing that without real evidence and answers, so we called the BEVS. Within one day they scheduled us with their oncologist Dr. Schmit for a consult. At first we thought like human doctors, a consult is just talk no action, we were very wrong! We were brought in immediately and were told how the day would unfold. The doctor was extremely impressive with teaching us what she wanted to do for diagnostics that morning and making sure we knew that there is treatments and we will get all the answers. Then, they gave us the estimate which we had to sign to agree to. Now we were not expecting our small hometown prices because we were seeing a specialist, but to be honest with the list of all the diagnostics that were to be performed right then I was impressed with the price. We went to lunch as our dog went through the testing, the doctor called us an hour and a half later to invite us back to discuss. Yes, she had terminal bladder cancer, BUT there were treatments to extend our time with her by months. This was incredible news compared to preparing to put her down within days!! I can not say enough how impressed I was with Dr. Schmit and all of her explanation, the kind and professional techs, and front office staff. I felt we were treated like royalty. The actual cost was lower than the estimate as well! They even started her cancer treatment right before we left for home. We look forward to fighting the fight with this amazing place by our side.

My dog Sam was quilled by a porcupine last night, a first for both of us. After removing 1, I was not able to control him enough to remove the rest by myself so I was forced to travel an hour and 15 min to BEVS (my normal vet used to have 24 hour service but apparently does not any more). By the time we arrived it was ~11:30 PM (~2 hours since the incident), Sam was breathing heavy the whole way and unable to lie down/relax due to the quills in his mouth, he was clearly in pain and very anxious. We were the only ones there but the priority when we entered was not care for Sam but rather paper work, which prominently asked "how will you be paying". After 10 plus mins we were taken to a exam room where the tech listened to his heart for ~10s then left us for another ~15 mins before the doctor came in for the "exam", which took about 2 mins (at a cost of $110), and she told me it should be an easy removal but they would need to use a reversible sedative. At this point the doc left to prepare an estimate, 10 mins later another tech came in and informed me the cost would be ~$325-$425 depending on how it went. This seemed very expensive for the severity/duration of treatment, but I of course said OK. Finally, after being there for over 45 min, they took Sam for the procedure, telling me it would take 45 min or so and if I wanted to leave they would need a deposit.... This left me with a terrible feeling that this place was all about the money and that something bad might happen during what should be a routing procedure. After 20 min in the waiting room they came out and said everything went great, they had administered the reversal agent and we should be on our way int 10-15 min. After another 30 min a tech came out and said Sam had not woken up yet (my heart stopped) and that he is a "light weight" (90 lb lab) and I should tell any future vets this when it comes to sedatives... This is seriously what they said they to me. After another 20 mins or so they bring him out, he could hardly stand, kept lying down when not being actively walked, looked like he was barely conscious. This is almost an hour after they administered the reversal agent that was supposed to take 10-15 mins. After lifting him into my truck we headed home, I stopped every 10m to make sure he was still breathing, that's how bad it was. Even after the 90m ride home (with all the stops) he was no better. I had to carry him in the house and put him on his bed. I barely slept all night but thankfully he was better in the morning, only about 50% back to normal, but enough to know he should be ok. Almost 24 hours later he seems fine but still not quite back to normal, I am sure he will be at this point, but it was not a pleasant experience for either of us. Bottom line the vet clearly overdosed the meds, I have had other dogs receive reversible sedatives before and it was nothing like this. The quill removal was trivial, it was the medical procedure at BEVS that was the true incident. Added to this is the outrages pricing: $110.00 - Exam $29.86 - Butorphanol $34.33 - Dexmedetomidine $30.94 - Atipamezole $36.00 - Quill Removal $87.00 - Outpatient Monitoring ------------------------------------------------------ $328.13 - Total They clearly realize they have a monopoly on 24 emergency vet care in Northern VT and are taking advantage of it. The overall experience was terrible and I would NEVER go there again unless absolutely necessary. I question the credentials of any vet/tech working at this place. I am sure the issue is from the top down, they likely employ questionable/cheaper staff to increase profits. Beware. I am just glad Sam is OK.

Service was very slow, they tell you to give them 5 minutes and a half hour goes by and you see no one, for the amount of money they charge you should expect better service. Hope we never have to use them again...

I have a 21 yo maine coon that suffers with arthritis and has been on PM for alittle over a year, I pick his medicine up from his regular vet every 10 days. I feel emergency vets should be able to have access to medical charts from all local vet clinics of there patients for emergency purposes! I work full time as a nurse at UVM and got called in last minute and being the holidays I have not been able to refill his pain meds because there closed till Tuesday and I can't leave my sick patients. I have never forgotten to fill his medicine or make sure my boy has everything he needs, Until today! It was out of my hands! They said I had to come in because it's a pain med . ... for what to tell me he has arthritis... as I already know and charge me outragious prices! I also can't leave work to do that. It's the Holiday season and everything is closed and my cat will suffer, because of there polices on pm for a cat! I'm aware of rules and regulations but to make a old cat suffer is bull! They need to understand it's ones loved one and be able to take care of needs like a refill on medicine without a appointment. Page a doctor on call or something. To top it off the tech I spoke with was rude and not compassionate at all, of the situation. This isn't the first horrible exp I have had.

The ratings speak for themselves I was forced and I do mean forced to put my sweet baby Rosy to sleep last night due to their crazy high prices. I am sure they have been swindled out of money by low life people and that's is why the demand money up front but they need to take things on a case by case situation. I truly believe that what drives them in not superior vet care but by money. They have no compassion when it comes to those with financial difficulties. I have been to them many times in the past. They know they can count on me to pay my bill and still were cold hearted and aloof. BEVS you need to be more concerned with quality vet care for all not just the rich or those with an amazing credit score. You let me down! Rosy passed away because you as a company have no empathy. Rosy meant the world to me, she was not simply a pet but a cherished family member and I am devastated by her loss and by the lack of compassion you showed her last night. Please don't insult me by responding with a generic pre typed pretend sympathy note. Just change your money grubbing ways and focus on saving animals.

I had an overnight emergency recently with my kitty that I thought was maybe an allergic reaction. We brought her in due to severe vomiting, lethargy, concerning breathing issues, abdominal pain, etc. They gave her some oxygen therapy and some strong anti-nausea meds. They also did a set of xrays to make sure there were no obstructions in her airways or fluids in her lungs. I asked if we should do blood work just in case and I was told it was not necessary. Well, they’re the experts, not me. Their pricing was decent enough and we brought my girl home. She continued to be ill the following day. Severe lethargy, mid day, she started to vomit again and her breathing had gotten weird so I rushed her to my normal vet for an emergency visit. If BEVS had drawn blood, they would have seen my cat was in acute kidney failure! Those extra 12+ hours of constant fluids could have made a difference and could have saved her. I had to put her down Saturday, 2/2/2019.

Literally want your money not what’s best for your dog/cat. Greed over patient care. Spent $3000 for what they could have sent me home with medication instead. My dog isn’t going to make it thru the next day and when I called back they said oh, you should have known she’s in heart failure. It’s nothing to do with us. Real nice.

Unfortunately this is the only place around to bring a sick or injured pet for an after hours emergency. 6 month old golden retriever puppy needed one stitch to patch a correction wound from another dog while playing. 3 and a half hours later and $700 and they sent us on our way with a pain killer and antibiotic. The next day we come to find out they left the iv cath in his leg under the bandage and recommended that we drive him almost an hour back to have it removed “free of charge”. Unbelievable! Called our usual vet and they felt so bad that they did it for free. I’d like to say that I would never go back to BEVS but with so few options in emergency situations, I likely won’t have a choice
