I and my mother have had a very bad experience with Dakota Hills Veterinary Clinic in November 2012. Our dog Buster died because of their negligence. We boarded our two small dogs with them while we attended my aunts funeral on the east coast. To our horror we get the dreaded phone call. Buster our male was dead. We were told that he somehow got out of the outside run. They coiuldn't find him for a while. When they did find him, they chased him into traffic on highway 44 and was hit by a car! Buster was only 2 years old and was a special sweetheart dog. I was told by Dr. Dye that the insurance company will reimburse us $$ so we could get another dog. Yeah right! I am still dealing with the insurance company and they want to argue about the reimbursement figure! My point is be careful who you give your small pets to to watch. You don't want the phone call we got and have to deal with losing your beloved pet while you are away. You don't want to have to deal with the insurance company on top of that. It adds to the frustration!!

Wonderful, top of the line veterinarians. State of the art equipment and emergency services. Also has cremation services so that if you wish you may keep you loved friend's ashes. The vets are kind and caring and have a lot of educational pamphlets and can set your friend up on a wellness schedule. I highly recommend them for all animals.

Our German Shepherd got in a tussle with another dog and was bleeding pretty bad. We went to an emergency vet clinic first and they turned us away. We called ahead and asked if we could bring him in for an emergency and they had him in in less than ten minutes. We just moved to Rapid City and didn’t have a primary vet but now it looks like we do. Dr. Ireland and the Tech that saw us were amazing with him and he was never stressed or uncomfortable with what they were doing. We got antibiotics and he got patched up and we were on our way! Definitely will be coming back.

Very disappointed that we paid 191 dollars to have our dogs kenneled here for the weekend and they were not fed correctly. When we got home we discovered there was 3 full bags of food left when there should of been a half bag each for 2 of the dogs. When I called it is nothing but apologies and thank you for bringing this to our attention. We have alot of new staff and that was it. I feel we paid for a service that was not done correctly.

i have taken my cats here for years, and whether i had sick kittens, healthy adults in for a check up and shots, or my older cats who were ready for kitty heaven, everyone, and i mean everyone was very helpful, concerned, and sympathetic for my loss. I wouldn't take my cats anywhere but here.

I was SO HAPPY to find this vet. On the first day of our ten day road trip, my husband and I discovered a large mass on our dog's abdomen. We were half way across ND, heading to Mount Rushmore from Minnesota, and found this vet clinic to be open and on our way. The staff was so great, attentive, efficient and polite- on the phone, at the front desk, in the patient room, everything. The vet was concise, clear, had a diagnoses, and confident advice. I have never spent so little time inside a clinic with an appt- I left very happy. Our puppy is doing well!

TL DR: This is an amazing Veterinary clinic that cares about your animal. We found Dakota Hills Veterinary after other clinics said our 2 year old Akita/Great Dane had allergies, and it turns out he had a heart defect. Dakota Hills was great with him. They do boarding which was a god send, with his medical concerns we would have had to cancel our trip if we did not have qualified medical professionals to watch him. He eventually passed, and they gave us a plaster cast paw print which was very nice. Fast forward to our 2 new dogs which have been Dakota Hills animals since we got them. Dakota Hills does puppy training and socialization classes. These are great, the Vet techs that run the classes are amazing and it gets your pet to love going to the vet, ours still do. Only possible downside is that they are not the cheapest vet in town. That being said you get what you pay for and we think its the best Vet in town.

My last appointment at Dakota Hills was an example of the incidents that have happened there for the past year. When checking in for a dental for my cat, make it clear no additional services, just basic dental cleaning. Receptionist has been there better part of the year and still leaves additional services listed on my check in sheet. This person has another receptionist correcting their work on a weekly basis. I make it clear I need to be contacted if any teeth need pulled. DHVC states tech called twice, I show no calls on my phone - bottom line the tech did not call any more than they did the courtesy pedicure noted on my invoice. My doctor was the most ethical, empathetic, excellent vet and there are several techs there who are not only highly skilled but cared for my pets as if they were their own. There is the receptionist who will double and triple check to make sure they give you the correct prices and all charges are on your bill when you check out. But there is also a person there that will recommend a dental cleaning on an elderly cat weighing barely 6 pounds when they have full knowledge the several hundred dollars spent would do nothing to extend the cat's life and would in fact be dangerous to put an animal at that age and body weight under sedation. There is the tech there that wouldn't pick up the call on a newborn kitten in distress because according to another tech they said they don't know anything about cats. There is the person there that when I bring in a stool sample and request a fecal which would be commonly understood to be a fecal float which should cost between $30 and $50, this person gives me the much higher price of over $70 which is for a fecal with additional testing for giardia which is not the test I requested. And last but not least there is the individual there that said yes, a client should bring their pet in and referenced "making payroll" as the reason and I later hear this same person has been trying to work overtime. While communication between a clinic and a client is certainly important, even more important is trust. DHVC has failed on both counts. For those that would say I am a disgruntled customer based on a few incidents, the truth is I was a customer there for over 19 years and those "altercations" that have taken place in the last 12 months have been with the same individuals. I would not return to the clinic if I could and would not recommend anyone bring their pets there.

Very Disappointed! I brought my Parakeet over there a while ago and the receptionist told me they don’t accept birds! What kind of nonsense is that? And that the vet is afraid of birds! Now what kind of Vet is afraid of Birds? That’s just childish and ignorant. Honestly you should not be a vet if you are afraid of something as small as a 5 month old Parakeet.

Very friendly staff and they know how much you care about your pet. They treat your pet as if they are one of their own. A little pricey compared to other vets in the area but the care that they give is worth it. Open 7 days a week, which is nice since my furry friend is on a special food. Only wish that they had emergency services, but they are open late. They do see multiple pets at the same time so you don't have to make multiple trips if you have two dogs or cats. A trustworthy veterinary clinic.

Dr. Dye has a caring magic touch. I brought my dog, Hannah, to Dakota Hills Veterinary Clinic for a second opinion regarding a rapidly-growing tumor on her nose. Dr. Dye attempted to diagnose the tumor using a fine needle aspiration, which yielded inconclusive results. We decided to have the entire mass excised as a precaution in case Hannah's tumor was malignant. Dr. Dye took the utmost care to reconstruct the area on Hannah's nose "to keep her pretty." (Dr. Dye's words, not mine.) Dr. Dye and her skilled and kind team took fantastic care of our Hannah, and we are deeply grateful. I couldn't have asked for a better group of people to care for our little princess. Hannah's made a beautiful recovery.

I have used Dakota Hills for more then 20 years. Penny and the staff take great care of are fit baby's. As well as clearly explain what the issue is as well as the plan to help make things better. We had to put down one off are older dogs. They helped and explained as well as allow you to have all the private you need to say good bye to your pet.

These folks are amazingly thorough. They do all the tests and go the extra mile. When my cat came down with a rare ailment and needed meds, I despaired because she won't take pills. Trina, my personal hero, found the meds in a transdermal lotion. My cat's heart is now normal! Also, they found my oldest cat's cancer and have administered chemo to him for free for 2.5 years. (The meds aren't free, but they don't charge to administer them.) This place is pricey, but it's because they do more tests and go further than some other vets. Also, their hours (7 to 7 on most days) are perfect for my weird schedule.

Nothing wrong with the service but price is outrageous. Brought my three dogs in at the same time for routine shots and office visit and was charged $505! My old vet which I have no problems with besides not being open on Saturdays charged me $136 for all three dogs’ shots and office visit last year. No matter how you slice it, that just doesn’t make sense.

I was really disappointed here today. We have been going here for over 10 years. Today, we brought our newly adopted pup in. It felt like high pressure sales and the veterinarian didn't seem like she wanted to be there. They fed our new pup cheese wiz to gain his trust. A lot of cheese wiz, maybe a 1/4 can. We don't like to feed our animals garbage food or people food. We were also given what felt like sales pitches to buy their preferred pet insurance and other products. It was all very mechanical feeling and not what we have come to expect from Dakota Hills. I'm sure they still give great vet services, but we felt like we had gone to a used car lot, not the vet.

The last two times I needed to bring a kitty in they just didn't have time and no longer has emergency after hours times (at least that is what they said on the phone). Went down the street and both times spent less than I ever did in one visit here and that included the emergency fees. Wish things were different but my business is heading down the road.

I took my puppy in because she was limping and the doctor tried to extort us for money and put her on treatments and meds she didn’t need. Then she had the nerve to get angry when we asked questions. My puppy just pulled a muscle and I ended up paying almost $300. If I could give negative stars I would.

I am new to the area and went to this clinic once and would not bring my pets back. The veterinarian who helped us would not check my dogs ear. He looked into the outer ear and told me that he saw no reason to check the inner ear with his otoscope. How hard would it have been to give my dog's ear a thorough check? I am familiar with the signs of a possible infections and would of appreciated the respect of being listened to. After all I am paying for a physical exam. This quick, simple non-evasive exam only takes a minute or two and would of assured me that my dog was fine. I know it's a business and they need to make money to stay in business, HOWEVER I really felt that more shots, pills and tests were 'pushed' than was really necessary. These opinions are based on my experiences.

How do I begin? Doctor Penny decided to double Ace my horse and nearly killed her. I brought one of my bottle fed kittens in and she told me that he was under nourished like it was my fault and then we later found out that he was sick and died of pneumonia. Now when I need to go in and get an OTC worming medication for my cat her stuck up secretary tells me that I need a precription from my vet. News flash, my vet is in Black Hawk and sells the stuff OTC. I merely needed to see if you'd sell it, I am very disappointed in a clinic that is supposed to treat large and small animals. I will not be taking my animals there again.

I would give negative scars as well if I could!! My daughter too her one year old kitty in because she had a wound that we thought was the result of over grooming. While there they determined she had pushy fluid in her abdomen. They cut it open and drained it only for it to fill back up. They did a few tests that came back negative plis an ultrasound and proceeded to tell my daughter they needed more money to run more tests, understandable I guess however they prescribed antibiotic and sent her home with this open wound. Needless to say the wound was getting worse instead of better with what appeared to be protruding intestines. Understandably my daughter was furious and her and my husband returned with the cat insisting they fix their mistake (the hole in the cat that they opened wider and left) They had the audacity to tell her "we dont send animals home with open wounds" really because they did! Now they are back peddling over their mistake. Furthermore they agreed to treat the wound and my daughter left to get the money (that is what all vets really care about) and while she was gone they called her and said the wound was all the way into her abdomen so either bring back $800-1000 or pay to put her down. Real compassionate..right. My daughter questioned how they missed the severity two days ago when they did the ultrasound!! She paid for those services and they didnt catch that? Well they arent taking responsibility for it either. Incompetence at its greatest. They dont send animals home with open wounds but THEY DID and apparently the ultrasound was just to charge more not to really actually determine the problem. All the money later we have no answers to what caused this or if we should be concerned for our other pets. Two years ago, they said they couldn't save our dog after he ate a corncob..so we took him to The Animal hospital and he is a fat, happy, healthy dog now. If we do end up having to put the kitty down, we'll do it there or at our normal vet ..not at this poor excuse for a vet clinic.

THE NICEST STAFF EVER! Also Dr. Curt is so caring and focused. Our pup ate a chew toy on a road trip and it got stuck in his digestive tract. Dr. Curt was very clear with his plan and held off on pushing surgery over passing it. They kept him for a night and it was under $500! The staff was super clear on process, plan and payment. I would recommend them to anyone.
