Customer service is horrible and i been waiting for an avian vet for 2 hours.i drove from Pawtucket, i just want to know why my budgie can't walk.

They amicably and reasonably solved a billing problem I had. They treated me fairly in the situation, and addressed the problem promptly. I am happy with the result

I had visited an animal hospital (Ocean State) for the first time ever with my cat, Rufus, yesterday morning. Unfortunately, my poor baby was put down. But I didn't imagine that the specialists at Ocean State would not only be super caring and compassionate with Rufus, but also with me. I had never had to do something like this before but they helped me through the hard decision making and also treated Rufus, even in death, with the upmost respect and I cannot appreciate that enough. Thank you!

If I could give 10 stars to OSVS I would. My bloodhound was brought in with vomiting for 24 hours. They brought her in immediately to find that she had pneumonia. These people worked with her day and night to get her better. The people here were always there for me too...even when I called three times a day and visited daily. After a week my Olivia came home on Thanksgiving. So very much to be thankful for. You are all amazing!

I had to bring my 6 year old cat in. I was worried because I had a bad experience before with them. This time was so much better. My cat was having trouble breathing. They were very careful with him and the techs were very nice and asked a ton of questions while they brought him in the back. They asked if we wanted to be notified before they did any procedures. The vet came in the room multiple times to update us. Unfortunately our situation didn't work out. Our cat was critical with a diaphragmatic hernia and we chose to let him go. They did not pressure us and comforted us.

If I could give a MINUS 1,000 rating I would. In a nutshell their only interest is making $$$$$$$$ and boy do they rip you off every chance they get. BTW my basset passed away under their care, the ones that twice said he was good to go home!!! WILL NEVER EVER LET THEM TOUCH A PET OF MINE.

My pet rat Raisin was having trouble breathing on the 4th of July, they took her right in , put her in oxygen, and took care of her. Then the Dr came to tell me what was wrong with Raisin. She is alive and doing great thanks to Ocean State Veterinary Services. It was well worth waiting for the results Raisin has made. I would have lost her if it weren't for here. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. And Raisin thanks you also.

We had our 17 year old cat put down and they were absolutely wonderful. They took great care in our cat and put us at ease thru the whole ordeal. Thank you for being so professional and caring. Greatly recommend

Today was our first visit. I gotta say we couldn’t be happier. We brought our dog in when she ripped her nail off. They took her right in and removed the nail the rest of the way. Devon was our tech. He was extremely nice and helpful and our pup Maggie seemed to like him. Thank you for everything!

Worse expairance I ever had vet dr. Carlson license should be reviewed ...0% compation at this place and only care about money up charging for service they didn’t even provide .So sad places like this exsist know your coming to them for help and guidance

These guys are incredible. I brought my dog in for an emergency surgery to have a blockage removed and his care and team was phenomenal. Dr. Trow was great at answering any questions I had and walking me through the whole process. I hope my dog is never sick again but if he ever is I will definitely bring him back here.

Very young inexperienced "doctors" currently on staff on the second shift. I brought my cat there 6 years ago and a very experienced doctor diagnosed my cat immediately and offered care. Saved his life. This past week it would have cost me $1200 just to get a true evaluation and hopefully a diagnosis. Thank God I didn't fall for it. An experienced and ethical vet would have been less concerned with paying their Lexus payment and would have been honest with me. I took him home that night, against their advice and $$$, and he is fine. Either they don't now what their doing or they are fleecing you and tugging at your heartstrings. Pathetic.

Our dog Tuxedo was taken in on a Saturday evening after receiving a traumatic life threatening impact injury. The prices for an initial check up were provided to me. I found this to be good business practice as it put me at ease of not being surprised or anxious of costs. I found the exam prices reasonable considering the emergency services they provide. It turns out that usually they suggest a hospital stay for our situation which cost more. However, they did not pressure nor take advantage of me. While presenting this option they informed me in detail the Tuxedo was very fortunate. He was injured but it appeared it could heal with treatment provided on their exam, so I was empowered with a choice. I choose to take him home if this remained the case. After a further examination Tuxedo did have a pelvic injury & was in pain. They offered to do an X-Ray & blood work just ensure no fracture. Again, they informed me that they thought the damage was not a fracture nor did he have other internal complications but these tests could verify this. I felt empowered with a choice, I agreed to these tests. The results were good news. Finally everything looked good, but we are not out of the woods. So lastly, two different vets sat down with me in detail, to explain each potential issue & how to monitor his breathing / health, it was personal & not overwhelming, they took the time to train me. This is what they usually do for overnight observations. This in support of my choice to take him home. Clearly had the situation been worse, they would have suggested otherwise. The point is they provided me with an honest detailed assessment each step of the way. They suggested but did not push services I did not need despite us being in a vulnerable position. Overall, I dealt with multiple staff including Two Vets a Tech and the Receptionist, all were sensitive two my situation And were very professional. They care about animals. Unfortunately pet emergencies and cost are an unfortunate reality that one must confront simultaneously. Depending on the costs & emergency, there just might not be a good answer. I had no issues with them being upfront about this nor there payment methods. I have zero issues with them being a business or making a profit. It should be of no surprise to anyone. As long as they are genuinely passionate about animals and doing it for the right reasons. Lastly, all I can ask for is to have a place that can provide emergency services making them as affordable as they can & work with you to keep cost down when possible. I am pleased to say that this was my experience on Saturday night.

Dr.Horn and Dr. Hunt took such good care of my pet! I could never have asked for better care for my little pet and they took very good care of me as well. I walked in with a pet in crisis and received immediate assistance from a caring and highly skilled staff who were able to place an IV into a small dehydrated animal with precision and revive her enough to stabilize her for several hours before the final call came. And even then, the veterinarians were very kind and made my choices easy and helped every step of the way. And they helped me with the final arrangements too. This is not my first experience here. I have rescued many animals and I ALWAYS bring them here for care. I always will because I can count on excellent care around the clock.

I've had several visits with my problem puppy Ripley and once or twice with my other 2 pitty pups. We have never been met with anything but love and compassion. (Cause most places look at pit bulls with side eyes

Hal Curry

We were impressed with the treatment , attention and interest provide our cat. Yes , it is a bit pricey but for all they offer we feel the price is justified. Then , because Casey was quite I'll and sedated we visited him in the ICE

My dog was seen around midnight. Just walking through the door we were treated with warmth, understanding, and were made to feel as comfortable as possible. Sadie was taken right in and we soon knew she had cancer and we needed to end her suffering. The entire staff was so caring not only to us but to Sadie. Thank you to the whole staff for helping us through this difficult experience.

Cheryl Mcstay

Very competent, caring, and loving staff. My visits were very positive and thankfully my pet is doing well. There isn’t another facility equipped to handle all types of services for your pet with the exception of their sister facility, BayState, located in Swansea, MA, which is as good.

J Bower

Ocean State Veterinary saved my cat’s life! They did everything they could for him and kept us updated throughout his 3 day stay. Their directions to us for aftercare were detailed and easy to follow. It was obvious they truly cared about our cat as a patient.

CCOMAC Admissions

my little dog was very sick and was not sure if she would make it. they took very good care of her and did not over due it with test and meds. Very please with the price and my dog is doing 100% better. Thank you to all the staff.

Todd Richard-Peckham

Very long wait to see the vet even though the staff told us that they were not busy. And the vet had absolutely no personality - referred us elsewhere and, frankly, I was glad she did because I would not have felt comfortable leaving my dog with her. To be fair, I have had to visit this office before for a pet emergency and they were very good, but that visit was also a VERY LONG wait. Overall, I just don't have a good feeling about the place.

Brooka Blount

My sweet guinea pig Timothy was very sick on a Saturday night of course. They took him right in, were very nice and good with him. Total visit 190 meds included and he's so much better now! This place was worth the drive.

Jamie Hopkins

Took my dog here when he had an accident that left his back and neck injured. He was wailing in pain. Staff took good care of him and he was able to make a full recovery...no complications or lasting effects from the ordeal.Everything was top notch and aided in making a bad situation much less stressful. Highly recommend.

Mallory Lovett Parker Arnold

I can't thank Dr Paul Worhunsky enough for his wonderful care of my cat Bella. She was having problems breathing. Unfortunately, her mass was covering her airways and she was suffering. Paul and the staff were compassionate to me and Bella at a very difficult time.

Samantha Bonsignore

OSVS took wonderful care of my dog. They are expensive, but the care was top notch and staff was attentive and very informative.

Jean LaFazia

Went in with a cat who had a temp of 105. Five hours later and $464 later they could not tell me what was wrong with the cat. Would not go again nor would I recommend them to anyone, They are way overpriced and were of no help.

Cate Holt

My senior border collie was treated here over the summer and received excellent care for a very difficult-to-treat immune/platelet condition. Dr. Monheit was very thorough and detailed. Both she and Dr. Holloway were on the ball from the start, in terms of weighing all the options fully and were always available for follow up questions by phone as needed. It was so hard leaving my dog in the hospital, but it was clear the entire staff were attentive and loving to her around the clock during her stay, they treated her like the celebrity she is to us. Most importantly for us, our dog was carefully guided through a really tricky and nuanced treatment plan and she is now starting to stabilize. We feel the intervention she got at OSVS was critical towards getting her through this, and we’re grateful for the care she received there. Highly recommend!

Brought my black lab on 1/20/18 around 8 pm with my ex wife call the head and told them my dog was having problems walking and seem lethargic as soon as I got there they immediately took my dog in the back and checked her out I am very satisfied with the service we were there maybe 3 hours total mind you in that time they were evaluating and running test on my pup I found them to be very great and professional price is reasonable I would definitely recommend them.and on a side note I'm looking for the girl that was their with her dog.You know who you are hope to see you again.

Brenna Lucille

Although they are busy, my dog had an extreme emergency and they were very fast acting, kind, knowledgeable and saved her life and now I know exactly where to go when there is an emergency!

A couple weeks ago, our long-haired dachshund Hobbes suddenly became extremely sick with a severe case of bloat and pancreatitis. The staff at Ocean State were honest about his condition (which was pretty bad) while still being kind and understanding. He is now alive and well, thanks to them! They were also so patient with us calling to check in when he stayed overnight. Hobbes thanks you as well!

Shawn Dulac

CASH COW!!! Taken advantage like a fool. Staff is upbeat and shows no empathy! Has no problem taking advantage of you when your hoping for a miracle. I may not be a vet, however I know when a patient is crashing and can't believe that they take advantage of people like that. 125.00 for a emergency visit that lasted 7 minutes.. my pet was near death and crashed fast in the short time I was home from work. They provide false hope that a IV and blood work would make a difference. 318.00 for a blood test and IV and 8 mins later " we can do a blood transfusion for a temporary band-aid but your pets prognoses doesn't look good." Then we choose to euthanize our beloved pet and are charged 238.00 more! $681.00 FOR 15 MINUTES OF WORK !!! AT LEAST THE PLUMBER COMES TO YOUR HOUSE!!!!!!!

We were in Colorado when our Husky was admitted to OSVS with acute bacteriological pneumonia. The vets and techs were amazing--they took great care of her, kept us fully informed with helpful, plain-language descriptions of her condition and the treatments (as well as the costs). Dr. Sun really stood out for her compassion and professionalism in dealing both with our dogs and with us. We could not be more grateful to the entire team there. Update: Zelda is doing great. Her respiration is back to normal and her energy level is bouncing back. Got a very thorough and helpful follow up phone call from Dr Sun, as well.

Mostly disappointing experience. They seemed to have a false sense of sympathy that you usually only find in retail businesses. We were admitted to an infection control room, but I noticed upon entry that the room was not cleaned properly; there were chunks of white fur scattered over the baseboards on the walls and on the floor near the exam table. In a human hospital, this room would have been unfit for patients, especially those with potentially contagious illnesses. They immediately issued a document with the estimated price of treatment - in fact, they were more enthusiastic about discussing payment than they were about medical care itself. However, they refused to provide appropriate care to my animal simply because I could not pay the $1000 minimum estimate up-front and in-full. They also refused to negotiate any sort of payment plans or financial assistance options; their only "payment plan" was a "Care Credit" card that charges nearly 30% interest on any individual items less than $200 - and we were denied enrollment outright. It was clearly a program designed for profit, and not for genuine health care. No amount of "sorry, it's unfortunate, have a nice day" comments will heal my companion. I am grateful that we were seen right away, but we saw the doctor maybe three times within five hours. I am also grateful that they recommended any sort of out-patient care at all, but I'm incredibly disappointed that their organization was so unwilling to work with pet parents and animals to provide necessary medical care, regardless of a person's income. I do not consider this to be emergency medical care, as they were unwilling to provide emergency care without a payment first. If this were a human hospital, we would have been provided emergency medical care, even if we were unable to pay before treatment. The standards for human versus animal health care is abhorrent.

Yesterday was a difficult time for my family and I when we decided to put our senior dog to sleep. Dr. Clarke and her staff (Desire & Kaitlin) made us as comfortable as possible, they gave our dog exceptional care and were very professional. We thank them for their trustworthy service and for the support at such a difficult time.

kimber4372

I had trouble deciding between 3 and 4 stars. In one regard, they were great when my dog got hit by car and I just showed up with him. They whisked him in and quickly got him comfortable and made me relax. But OH MY the money! You just feel a little helpless because there is truly no way to know if every charge on the very long receipt is totally warranted, and they add up very quickly.

My avian vet was out of state until March and my cockatiel Stormy needed to be seen ASAP. Their avian vet was away as well however they listened to me as the owner and we came up with a treatment plan for her that not only saved her life but also was within my budget. Emergency vet visits will always be super overpriced but I will say they were very accommodating and helped me find something that I could afford and save my baby. If you are having an emergency I definitely recommend as they WILL try to save their lives.

Would like to give them a real review but due to their lack on caring I cannot. Was referred to Dr. Kane by our local vet, called them 5 days in a row but I never received a call back to even schedule an appointment. Was told by the scheduling persons that they could not schedule for Dr. Kane but could only forward me to his voice mail. After the third call I asked the scheduling person if there was any other way to get an appointment and was told that they never answer their phone, no one at OSVS can schedule for him and if I was lucky they might call me back. The person told me that they would leave a written request to Dr. Kane but still no call. Don’t bother with OSTV if you need specialist care for your pet. Ask your vet for referred to a vet that cares.

Horrible. Took my cat in at 11:30 am and at 5:10 pm she was in bavk and I finally was given results of Xrsy and blood. Xray showed mild stool. Blood work showed nothing. The sd she was deydrated, yet, kept her 5 hours and DIDN'T give her any fluids. Nothing to eat iether. So then they say I could afmit her for just under $3000 in fees. I was treated RUDELY when I adked the so called vet if it would take another say 2 hours and she gave me a ROTTEN look and sd " I have NO IDEA, depends on when a TECH is available. The so called Vet told me at 1:55 she was deydrated BUT LET HER GO FOR ANOTHER 2.5 HOURS without any fluids. Look, this is BS and at minimum, GET SOME COMPASSION and GET SOME GELP AND LEARN HOW TO MANAGE YOUR PATIENTS WHILE THEY SIT IN THE BACK FOR HOURS. I am sure I have spent thosands enough in this place to FINALLY just say, this place needs outside consulting to GET a grip on true CARE.

Great team of doctors and techs.

From the moment I walked into that building I knew this was the right place to bring our dog they were so caring they brought him in right away they ran as many tests as they could to find out what was going on with him unfortunately we weren't able to take him home but they made it the best experience that we could have ever encountered. When we had to make the decision that we had to put our dog down they coached us through the entire thing explained everything into extreme detail they comforted us and gave us as much time as we needed in the short amount of time left with our dog I can't thank them enough !

We had to take my 1yr old hound mix Carson to the emergency vet about a month ago because he got into some ibuprofen I left in by bag and accidentally left within his hound nose's reach. Their response time couldn't have been quicker with the charcoal and induced vomiting. They were diligent about calling me every day he was there (3 days total), checked his kidney numbers and updated me daily, and let us visit anytime we wanted, even letting us take him on walks out in the yard. We live over an hour away, so they were extremely helpful and accommodating. They referred to us as "Carson's mom" or "Carson's dad" on the phone, which reinforced that they knew how important he was to my husband and me. He was in good spirits every time we saw him and has been great every since we brought him home. Can't thank them enough for saving my puppy. I know the quick response in the very early hours saved my dog from certain kidney failure and death with the amount of ibuprofen he consumed and I have also learned a very valuable lesson.

Great service, nothing like this hospital anywhere around here! It's not fast, and it not cheap, but they saved my cat's life twice already - and that's worth the time and money to me. They are very thorough, run very much like a people-hospital. The difference with regular people-hospitals and OSVS is what's shocking to most of the low reviewers here... There's no health insurance for animals, so people aren't used to having to talk about the bill in such a frank way. We're not used to considering the cost of treatment when deciding the course of treatment. Some of the ppl here who have given OSVS 1 star have stated that this makes them rude, and is a sign that they don't care about your pet. This just isn't true in my experience. Unfortunately, it's a necessary part of doing business... and I am grateful they are in business!

We've used Ocean state Vet a few times staff is a ways polite compassionate and friendly. They are always great with answers questions and keep in touch with you amazingly. Our dogs have always had great treatment there.

Total ripoff we brought in a kitten knowing she had swolloed something and it was stuck in her throat . We was desperate to get her help the vet said she had a upper respiratory infection. We knew that was not the case they wanted to charge another $100 to do Xray to prove us wrong on top of the $150 Just to look at her then going to charge $30 for medication she did not need. We made a decision to leave not getting Xray knowing dang well she had something in her throat . After going home she ate some wet food and the object came out it was thin plastic . That being said they diagnosed her with an infection she did not have she is fine and bouncing around like nothing happed. So I don't trust this place at all.

It breaks my heart to write this but I want to thank Dr Marini and the staff at Ocean State for the love and care they showed my family and my baby on her last day. Our Pebbles was just 4 years old when she suddenly and extremely unexpectedly began to deteriorate. Within hours she lost her ability to walk, see and hold her bladder. The staff was very empathetic to us but it was Dr Marini who I truly believe I need to thank. She understood our fears and devastation and gave us time to talk through hard choices in a private room. She was very honest about Pebbles' chances without ever being hurtful. When it came time to let Pebbles go she let us lay with her and never rushed us. You never want to be in that situation, but if you are, the doctor treating your baby will make all of the difference. It's hard to be thankful for much this holiday but I am thankful, that if nothing else, Pebbles had Dr Marini as her caregiver yesterday.

Squeaky Cat

Nice people and good service. But I had a $6000 bill for 6 nights, and my dog left without a diagnosis.

Phil Cyr

We went in with a very sick two year old that had been fighting an infection for a week. His temp was 105.5. Apollo became the hospital sweetheart as he went through the process of being diagnosed and treated. The technicians, the front staff, the doctors were all the best you could ask for. They were all both professional and at the same time very personal in their concern for both Apollo and us. We were never left with an unanswered question and every test and procedure was explained and the results were given to us along with a recommended next step in the process. We have our pup back with his family now and OSVS is still following his progress. We cannot thank them enough for the care we received and would highly recommend the staff there. Thank you all for the care Apollo received.

I came here a little over a year ago, when my parakeet, Tino, got sick. In the 12 years he was alive, he had only been sick once (viral infection), so I rarely had to go to the vet. I had moved 1.5 hours away from my hometown, so I really didn't know where to go, but I found this place from some online research. As it turns out, he had a stroke, and was too old to recover from it. I would like to thank Dr. Amanda Marino for trying so hard to keep him alive. I know it's definitely harder to specialize in nontraditional pets, and I appreciate how knowledgeable she was to what was going on with him.

cheryl baker

They handled my cats death with grace and dignity. The staff is very well trained to deal with grieving fur-parents. This was the first time going to Ocean State Vet's office and they treated my cat Bunnie and I like we had been life long friends. They offered to give me more time with my cat while there a few times. Knowing the he was 20 years old and on his last day I declined so he can finally rest. It was a bittersweet day for me and I know that his body was treated with respect. A big thank you to the staff members.

Lisa Millard

We took our dog there for an emergency, they took him right away in the back to get him accessed, the doctor came in and told what was wrong, explained everything to us, the worse case and the better. They let us visit before they started to work on him. Then later that night we got a call letting us know how he was doing. And again the next morning. Dr Hallowell was great!! The surgeon called to let us know how Oscar was after the surgery. The front staff was friendly and kind. Although, they may be on the more expensive i feel it was a great choice, his is my baby and his with it. Definitely would recommend them!! Thank you Dr Hallowell and staff members who helped save it boy!! I was nice to know he was in good hands!

I adopted my bunny Marie seven years ago and she was always shy and did not like to be handled. Eventually, she developed an abscess on her chin and I took her to a vet who told me that she needed to be put down. I could not believe it as they only assessed her for about five minutes. I googled bunny specialists and came up with Ocean State. I called them very distraught and they told me to come in right away. Dr. Spell man told me that there many things we could do and she performed dental surgery and antibiotic treatment for Marie. Marie had many dental surgeries done after this as this was just a recurring problem with her. She was a very lievely and beautiful bunny and I was always thankful for the time I had with her because I already thought I would lose her. Dr. Spelman went out of her way for me many, many times, accommodated my crazy schedule, made time to speak to me personally or on the phone and always made sure to explain to me everything that was going on. Today, I had to take Marie in to say goodbye to her. The vet who was there couldn’t have been kinder and gave me time and space to make the final decision. Everybody had so much compassion and was so very understanding of my grief. On my way out, I saw Dr. Spelman and she had very kind words for me and assured me that I had done the right thing. Marie was given back to me with a card with her paw prints and in a tasteful box with some fresh flowers. I have nothing but good things to say about everybody there and I will always be thankful to Dr. Spelman for giving me so much time with my best friend, Marie.

Elijah James

Fast, caring staff and doctors. Priced just as high as OTHER emergency pet clinics. Worth it.

Eliza Zimmermann

Thank you to all the staff for saving our family’s golden retriever. Not only did the team work quickly to get him in for emergency surgery, but they were extremely professional and honest. My parents were understandably nervous to leave him over night, especially with a high risk surgery. They were instantly put at ease when they heard employees interacting with pets in the back. They were relieved to witness the level of kindness and care the other animals were receiving. What happens when someone doesn’t know you are looking or listening says everything about the culture of a practice and the team they employ. Thank you for saving Bear!

Christine Meschino

I have been to OSVS on a couple of occasions and have always thought they were overpriced but in an emergency situation you have to deal with that. This last time was a total ripoff. I brought my 4 year old cat in because he was having an issue with his mouth. He wouldn't close it and he was drooling. We walked in on Sunday morning and when the tech asked me what was going on with him I told her "something is going on inside his mouth, he winced when he tried to eat his morning and he's drooling" . She took him to be examined, when she came back she informed us that he had no fever, all his vitals were good but that she thought he has a dislocated jaw. We had no reason to question her because we are not experts, although it sounded strange to us. We were then presented with a $600 bill which we paid and were told they were going to give him a sedative and try to manipulate his jaw back into place. We were told to go home and they would call us. When I called back 5 hours later I was told that they tried to manipulate his jaw back into place but they couldn't do it so we had to wait until morning for the surgery team to come in. Another $800. (total now $1400) I got a call at 8:15am on Monday from a surgeon who told me there was nothing in the x-ray (taken on Sunday) that showed a dislocated jaw and he thought an infected tooth was the problem, he asked my permission to extract the tooth, which I gave him. He called an hour later and said my cat was doing fine and we could pick him up that afternoon. I can't even begin to think when the lies began. Did the vet even look in my cats mouth? How is it they couldn't manipulate his jaw into place, when it was never out of place to start with? I'm having trouble believing that someone who went to veterinary school all those years can't tell a rotten tooth from a dislocated jaw. To make matters worse when I arrived to pick him up they tried to hit me up for another $32. which I refused to pay. I am writing this review to let others know to be very careful not to get robbed by these people. They have not heard the last of me.

Giovanni Abbruzzese

Compassionate staff, vet's extremely knowledgeable, made you feel comfortable with your choices. I will highly recommend to anyone.

I highly recommend. I had moved to the area only a few weeks before I took my dog here. I had to euthanize my dog due to lymphoma that he had been fighting for quite a while. It is already difficult to move somewhere new, but to also have to say goodbye to your best friend makes it that much harder. The entire staff was extremely professional and were very sincere. Many places you get the feeling that people are not 100% genuine in their words and actions, however, at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists there was a feeling that their condolences were sincere.

Ocean State Veterinary Specialists is our go to for Ron's emergency needs. Every time we need to bring him in on a whim, the front desk staff gets him immediate attention. This time Ron was fortunate enough to be home within 3 days after digesting or I should say, not digesting a Broccoli rubber band. The doctors and veterinary staff were always professional and kept us in the loop the entire process. I thoroughly enjoy there open communication and transparency in taking care of our little guy the best and most efficient way possible. I thank them all very much for helping make Ronald's transition from surgery to home life quick and easy while helping him make a speedy recovery. I hands down without a doubt highly recommend them and trust them very much! Can't thank you all enough for taking good care of Ron!

I called this afternoon in regard to my dog not feeling well. I was on the fence about taking him in. The lady that answered the phone, I wish I knew her name, was the sweetest most helpful rep. She listened and provided some great info and help set my mind at ease. If I ever need your service I would not hesitate. Thank you for your kindness and compassion!!

I brought my dog there this week after multiple seizures. I had to leave him overnight and wanted a MRI in the morning. They were wonderful. I was pretty much a wreck. They kept me calm, made my dog Shiloh comfortable with blankets in his cage. What impressed me more was that everyone knew what they were doing; sure there were interns, but there were full veterinary doctors there who met with us and explained the situation. The next morning I was contacted by an outstanding neurologist, Dr. Parsley. She was extremely competent and knowledgeable. We agreed to give my dog an MRI. We discussed medication and she and I came to an understanding on a plan. I didn't want everything she suggested, but we were both comfortable with the kind of medication going forward. I was kept informed during the entire process; and, when I came home I spoke with the doctor several times to review my dogs behavior on the medication. When your furry family member has problems, I would strongly suggest you bring them here. Each animal is assigned a technician in addition to their doctor. That technician is aware of your pet's situation at any one time. This makes updates easier in between doctor calls (which were also quite frequent!) Thank you Ocean State for taking care of my dog. Let's hope I don't need to go again in the near future. Lorie Ritter

I cannot recommend Ocean State enough. After going to 3 vets else where for our cat Bob's walking issue we finally went to Ocean State. We 1st met Dr. Bushnell in emergency - the first to pick up on a possible neurological issue. She introduced us to the oncology specialist, the incredible Dr. Marini, who discovered a spinal tumor. Ultimately and recently Bob had succesful delicate surgery performed by Dr. Coronado with Dr. Marini by his side. A good percentage of the tumor was removed. We are happy to report Bob is walking again - many thanks to the incredible doctors, their staff and to all the competent and kind staff out front and in back. Sincerely, Bev, Mike and Bob Cristina

After a gut wrenching experience with our Golden Retriever it is obvious to me this operation is a money hungry business. Complete lack of communication , lack of caring, After several visits upwards totaling approx $6000.00 this year alone we have lost complete confidence in this place. I could go on but there is no point.

Jane Soucy

We made an unexpected visit to OSVC last night with our beloved Mia Dolce. We unfortunately had to say good bye to her last night. The care and compassion demonstrated by Dr. Mediros and his support staff was exceptional. He was honest but kind and gentle. He truely had my pet's best interest at heart and did not try to guilt trip us into expensive and unnecessary testing which would have yielded the same result only 1 month from now. They are a special group of people who had a profound impact on my family's time of grief. I would highly recommend them.

Vaughn Thomas

Good job good credit and they denied us. Huge bulg on her stomach 5days after spay.

Carolyn Fletcher

Horrible place. Only go if per requires immediate surgery. I brought my dog in late at night as he was in pain. He was sick and in the care of another vet. They would not give us pain pills to keep him comfortable. I left after hours of useless examinations. He had a seizure shortly after we left. And passed shortly after that. All we needed was some thing to ease his discomfort. They would not do that. And charged me over $350.

Daniel D'Amico

I highly recommend OSVS to anyone looking for a regular veterinarian or in need of emergency care for their pet. I recently had a late night emergency with my pet, and I was very impressed with the level of attention, care, and comfort they provided to both me and my pup. Again, these people are great.. 5 stars.

Our dog started vomiting and we weren't sure if it was an emergency, but around 3 am we knew that we had to take him somewhere. As Ocean State Veterinary Specialists are the only 24 hour vet hospital in our area, that's where we went. They met us at the door and took Vito right in and got him an x-ray. As it turns out, he had two of my sewing pins in his digestive tract! They kept him that night to get an ultrasound, and later the next day took another x-ray. They did everything they could to prevent going to surgery, but unfortunately that's just what had to be done. They got Vito back to us quickly, gave me all the medication, food, and information I needed to take care of him, and were very up front with all of the fees associated with the surgery. I heard from everyone I spoke to that this hospital does outstanding work, and they were right. Vito is back to being his old self, and they even moved up my appointment to get his staples removed because of a cancellation. They are always there to help you even if it's just to get some information, and though they are expensive, it is an understandable expense and does not seem inflated. We get to go back tomorrow to remove Vito's staples, and I know that they will be just as kind, helpful, and genuinely interested in my pet's health as they were the first night we came in. Thank you for saving my baby's life.

Went.in to drop off hurt bird we found. Trying to do the right thing. The girl who greeted us when we walked in was completely rude and very unprofessional. We own our own business and would never treat our customers like that. You didnt do us a favor we did nature a favor. You should really consider a new line of work where you don't deal with people who are sad and or grieving. Never go back there.

Update: called to make an apt to get my dog and bring here home. The Dr. asked why i was unhappy with the service. I told her i shouldn't be getting charged for the surgeon that was supposedly called in for her if she had to wait 3.5 hours before surgery was started. When I was told at 9:30 that she would be out of surgery 2 hours. To much stress on me due to them not doing what was said would happen. No attempt on their part to make up for the incorrect info I have been given through this whole process. Very poor communication and conflicting stories from them. I will travel to Tufts in the future if I ever need Emergency service again. I still do not understand what or where the mess up was. Either waiting for the Operating Roomor waiting on a surgeon. I was told both. AGAIN conflicting info. Yesterday: I brought my dog in for "emergancy" pyomwyra surgery. 1. I asked for a ultra sound and was told they do not have 1 in the hospital by the vet tech 2. Spoke with Dr and they asked to give her an ultra sound!! Ummm thought they didn't have one. 3. Called to see how a 1 to 2 hour surgery went after 3 hours and was told she had gone in yet!!! Remember "emergancy". For the lower cost of $2655. And higher of 3500!! I would thinl she would be getting cared for better then she is. I am not happy with them at all!!!

Brad Emerson

Excellent vet hospital. Dr. Clarke and staff were a compassionate professional team. It was a difficult visit saying good bye to my last greyhound. They care about the animal and their family. Would definitely go back here for vet care when I have pets again. Thank you to everyone at Ocean State. I could never do your job.

Brought in my 3 year old lab who was puking up bile and not going to the bathroom. After taking her in, examining her, xrays, they gave us meds and released her. 2 days later she wasn't better, brought her back. Fortunately we brought a doctor wiht us, an MD in the fmaily, who examined the xrays and right away spotted a blockage in our dogs intestine. She came perilously close to dying because they didn't know how to read an xray. They did the surgery, removed the obstruction, and she is doing well today, at 8 years old. Super expensive. They charged us $16- for a collar when she in with one. the collar they charged us for looked like it was for a cat, not a 90 pound dog. I don't recall what else was on the bill as its been 6 years, but it was eye opening.

My cat,of 12yrs/13 my best friend in the whole world CHASE passed. Suddenly, in the middle of the night. ..for no reason. (heart-attack) They sent him home after in the most beautiful cremation box, his paw prints, two beautiful sympathy cards mailed to my house phone calls to my house, they checked on me, they knew what what CHASE meant to me. Still means to me May 5th will be 1yr now and I'm still crushed. I thought about getting another cat, but none could replace him. Tears still for you CHASE. Gone but never forgotten miss u everyday. Sad. Thanks Ocean State

THEY COMPLETELY FORGOT ABOUT US! I took my dog because she got a stick stuck in her throat while playing and although she seemed fine, I took her to get looked at anyway. We were seen by a tech and were told it was "unusually busy tonight, so the wait may be an hour or so." Yet there was only ONE person waiting for their pet (who was already being seen). During our 2 1/2 hour waiting period, we watched 2 employees and 4 pets leave. After shutting down the reception area they finally noticed we were in an exam room and asked what we were waiting for. Fifteen minutes later a vet came in and didn't even check her throat! $200+ later we left with pain meds, antibiotics and more info from google than we got from the vet who forgot about us! Not worth the THREE HOURS we had to wait! The reception staff is the only reason I even gave them 2 stars.

Kathyy Nardolillo

Wow, they were so caring towards my dog , they delivered her puppies safely. and was able to take her the same day. They are very understanding when it comes to financial issues. im glad that my dog got the best care.

Haley Lebrun

I have came here twice because once my once my dog eaten one of my friends ash trays and as soon as I got there my dog was loved and taken in very quickly. Yes, they are expensive but if you cant to afford to pay for a incident that is happening with your animal, then maybe you shouldn't have one. Many comments are about money, it is not the vets fault you may not have enough money. Like they have said on responses they need to pay for all the needs your animal may need plus the staff that work over night. The second time witch was just last night at 1130pm my dog had gotten hit by a car and the person didnt even stop. I brought him there he got immediate love and care and was taken in over night. everyone was so freindly. I always have amazing experiences here. If it wasnt for this 24/7 vet my dog could have died.

The compassion and care I received for my cat "BooBob" was outstanding. On April 12, 2015 I brought BooBob in to Ocean State Veterinary at 2:30am for an emergency visit. The immediate care given was over an above what I have every experienced from a Veterinary Specialists. The doctor and staff are top notch. They showed so much compassion that it made me feel like they knew us for a life time. The place is clean, organized, compassionate workers and I would highly recommend everyone to experience a visit

A little over a year ago I utilized services at this veterinarian. My 8 year old chihuahua had ongoing liver disease since birth and had taken a turn for the worst. My veterinarian could no longer help him and he was in crisis and needed a higher level of care. Ultimately going brain dead. My vet offered Tufts (which I have had terrible experiences with) or OSVS. I chose to give OSVS a shot. Best decision I could have made. My chihuahua didn't make it that day, and I was nowhere near ready to let go or make the decision to put him down. Kathy Tamberello (sp?) was our emergency vet. She was an angel sent to me that day. She put me at ease and got me into the right head space to make the humane decision to let go. She shared tears with me and spent ample amount of time in our room while I was saying goodbye. When all was said and done and he had passed, she walked out with him resting comfortably over her shoulder. I will never forget how she did that for me. It left me with a memory of him at peace. She showed genuine compassion that day. Fast forward a year from now one of my dogs is experiencing some vision loss and I feel totally confident coming back to OSVS.

I want to summarize the review as it was a complex case and it’s impossible to do in short form. Please read below for more detail. 1) They saved my dogs life. 2) The entire staff was amazing, empathetic and pragmatic. 3) There have been a lot of negative reviews due to cost. The cost WAS high, but if it was a human in the ICU for 7 nights 8 days I assure you it would be double. The costs are commensurate with the services. 4) Members of the staff went far above the call of duty for us and our dog. 5) GET YOUR ANIMALS VACCINATED FOR LEPTOSPIROSIS!! My puppy contracted a very aggressive form of Leptospirosis with a very low survival rate. We admitted her on a Sunday before we knew what was wrong and she was just mildly sick. They were clear on the costs and gave us a deposit needed. I admit at first, I was taken back. We automatically think a hospital treats first worries about money last. But it is important to them that the consumer makes an informed decision. It is also important to remember that unlike state hospitals for humans there are no subsidies, fundraising drives or other handouts for Vets. As a business owner I know how much it costs to keep the doors open, and it's not cheap. Ask yourself if you can pay 30+ salaries, payroll tax, purchase millions of dollars of diagnostic equipment, electric bills and overhead before you complain about medical costs for animals. Pet owners have a responsibility to be fiscally responsible for their care and/or purchase the right insurance. While we were still shopping for insurance and did not have it, thus absorbed the entire cost on our own; we realized it was our duty. It was also our CHOICE. They do not judge owners and are very clear, particularly once our dog turned for the worse that there might be a massive cost with a negative outcome. Some people might not want to hear that, but I personally prefer to be informed. The care was second to none. Dr. Davis and the other covering docs were unbelievable. They cried with us when our puppy was comatose and they cried happy tears with us when we finally got her out. The clinical aspects of this case are complex and it would take 10 pages to explain. So I will summarize. Our dog can’t talk, so we had to guess and yes we had to pay for tests that had no answers as a process of elimination. None of these tests were egregious, they all made sense to get to an answer and trust me when I said I triple checked with top human doctors. We also had to decide our course of action because some labs (PCR’s) take 2-4 days and our dog didn’t have that time. Unlike many docs who get protective or an ego, Dr. Davis was unbelievably open to working as a team. I had many friends and clients who are human doctors that pitched in with info. Dr. Davis also stayed HOURS after her shift to research and collaborate with their specialists. She was determined to win! Things got worse before they got better. We visited 2x a day for hours and the staff was amazingly accommodating and great at communicating what was happening. I was there for easily 50 hours and witnessed nothing but love for animals. 4 days in our pup rounded the corner and there was hope she’d pull through. Sure enough, slowly but surely, she came around. Throughout the whole process we would come in to find toys, treats and blankets that staff bought OUT OF POCKET because they fell in love with her. The normal greeting was a hug and despite so much heartache we found a beautiful part of humanity. 8 days later we finally took our Stella home. We are continuing auxiliary care there and could not be happier. And yes, as you can imagine the bill after 8 days was no small bill. However as someone who broke his neck and knows medical costs first hand, it was entirely in line with the care we received. The gratitude we have in our hearts is infinite. Thank you to everyone at Ocean State. A special thanks to Dr. Davis, Lucrecia, and the fantastic front of the house staff. We almost lost our puppy at 5 months old, now she has a second chance at her entire life; we will never forget.

Serenity FAGUE

Devon and Dr. Gumash were wonderful to my puppy. I could tell they really care about the animals they interact with. Dr. Ganesh took plenty of time to explain the options and didn't try to pressure me into any unnecessary procedures. Will definitely use them again in the future if my vet is closed!

We took our husky in very late Monday for what we suspected was another blockage as he suffered from one when he was just 8-months-old. We sat around for hours, and I’m not even sure what they did Tuesday early morning but we were already over $1300 and my dog hadn’t gotten surgery yet! The next day I had to call for an update on my dog, and they told me he needed emergency surgery and that I needed to sign consent and of course give more money. So I ran up there, and signed the form and asked to see my dog before surgery. It took over an hour for me to see him, and then left him with me for almost an hour while he was drooling bile and unable to control his diarrhea. I tried my hardest to comfort him while I sat with him but what he needed was emergency surgery in which we paid for and he didn’t receive. Hours, I mean HOURS go by and my precious boy still hasn’t gone into surgery. Thor had a complication come up while he was in the back, and no one told me about. I over heard them talking about it and I was able to bring it up. Finally Thor went into surgery late Tuesday night and they had to place an NG tube in which we didn’t give consent for, but I would’ve been okay with had they communicated with us. His parents. The people paying the over $3,000 bill. I had to call for the post surgery update because still no one had called me. Finally after speaking with the surgeon I was told to call the next morning between 10-10:30 if I hadn’t heard anything. I called them, and they said “we don’t give updates until 11”. All we ask for is open communication. That is all. And we didn’t receive that one bit. we didn’t receive a SINGLE update call. We had to call in. And now I have made two phone calls to go over the charges for Thor, and I haven’t gotten a call back. They didn’t even set up an appointment with us to have his staples removed. Such an unprofessional experience. Very displeased. **update** due to the crappy stapling job, and them sending my dog home with a cone that was too big for him, he was able to lean into the cone, fold it back and chew on it while we were at work, as well as swallow one of the staples from his incision as it was SO loose it fell out. He was rushed back to my normal vet and xrays confirmed he swallowed it. If ocean state stapled him up properly, and sent him home with the right cone we wouldn't have had to go back to the vet. Secondly the discharge nurse has no clue what shes talking about. They told us he was coming home on antobiotics for his incision, and he didnt.. had they sent him home with one, we wouldnt have had to go back to the vet for a 3rd time because of their mistakes to get an antibiotic to treat him. This place has an excuse for everything.

I'm writing the review because I have seen a few one stared reviews, and my experience was not remotely close to any of those. I took my giant flemish rabbit to be seen in emergency care for a large growth on her lip/chin. I was seen by a technician immediately & then triaged in with the other patients. Because of real emergency visit from another animal, I was there for a while. But someone was sent into the room to let me know what was taking so long. The treatment & evaluation of my rabbit was discussed and overall, am very happy about the process. I'm waiting on a call later today for a follow up visit. I'm very happy with who I saw & staff overall.

Gabriel Leon

They killed my dog who wasn't breathing and he died because they sent him home because another dog had an appointment. I hate this place.

kevin singleton

Dog got into chocolate and not much but hell I brought her in anyways they want to keep her for the night and monitor her because of her heart beat for $900 for one night. she's freaking out being in a vet. I want to leave now . 3 hrs I have been waiting to get my dog back. It was just a few pieces of milk chocolate just wanted her to vomit it up. My experience it was to much time between updates on my service animal. And sticking the owners In a exam room for long periods of time there should be a few more updates. They did take her right in the back to get started, staff completely wonderful, polite and great.... but very unenformend for long periods in an exam room with little information on the situation of my dog really isn't a good thing.

Liz and Jim Sullivan

Very nice and caring people, they have helped me with my Guinea pigs, rabbit, and my Boston terrier, I really want to thank you guys for saving my Guinea pig Noah's life last night and today and thank you to the doctor for doing his surgery today cant wait to bring him home.

Very unpleasant experience. My dog got a round bone stuck around his muzzle late at night. The staff would not let me stay with my pet even though I have much experience in medical settings including surgery and serving as a birth doula. I'm not one to just drop a loved one off and walk away and had not even met the vet. One staffer even yelled at me and was unreasonably hostile. Another called me "confrontative" and I needed to find some assurance that all was well. One assistant finally took me in a room with my dog which is all I expected to begin with. She was more calm than the guy who was totally out of line. I was there in a crisis and certainly didn't expect to be emotionally abused and put into a highly scared state. They got the bone out but it would have been really nice to be treated with respect and kindness. I don't think I'm unreasonable to expect courtesy.

Paula Horta

I had the awful experience of having to put my cat to sleep. I can't thank the staff enough for their kindness and compassion.

Katherine Anderson

Excellent experience from first phone call to discharge. Phone was answered quickly and with great customer service. We were given pricing estimates and wait times - both were accurate. When we arrived all rooms were full, so vet techs and the vet himself came to us in the waiting room then took our cat to the back to avoid any delay. All techs and front desk staff were efficient and competent. Dr. Margarucci was friendly, attentive, and kind. His discharge instructions were written thoughtfully and thoroughly. The vet tech worked with us on how to best administer the medication he prescribed and had us test it out with pill pockets while there to make sure we'd be all set. Best of all, price for an emergency visit on a weekend was $180 including meds. They pointed us towards cost-effective solutions. In and out quickly with great piece of mind and no huge cost burden. Wonderful place!

Rita Hansen

Extremely professional staff!

Daniel Ovoian

Our experience at Ocean State was phenomenal, despite the fact that an emergency room is never a place anyone wants to be. We brought our cat in with an intestinal blockage - after a fairly short wait, we were brought into a consultation room and given a very thorough diagnosis, using transmitted x-rays and information from our local vet as well as firsthand information from an on the spot checkup. The trade-off between surgery and watch/wait was discussed and we elected to have the surgery performed. The surgeon called us that night to let us know the operation was a success, and we were able to visit the next day. On discharge we received a thorough briefing and were able to call with questions or concerns during the recovery period. The entire time we were extremely impressed with the level of service, commitment and compassion shown by every single person we encountered from the front desk to the surgeon to the techs. I'm extremely thankful a place like this exists and that I am close by - and my cat would be too, if he had any comprehension of such things. A note on the cost - this was an expensive treatment: surgery with no insurance isn't ever going to be a low cost affair, but I will mention that we were provided a low and a high range for the estimated cost, and I was refunded ultimately over $500 as the total cost of care came in well below the low range / deposit made - point being that despite the unavoidable high price tag, I believe OSVS is honest about what they charge. Thanks everyone - our community is lucky to have you. Dan & Stephanie Ovoian (& Fyodor!)

First and foremost, thank you for the real deal triage service. My dog had a true emergency (we were both literally bleeding onto the floor) and my girl was taken back immediately while i tried to maintain continued composure. I work in the medical field (having a special interest in wound care), so while many say the staff is stoic, I commend the efficient, professional, thick skin that is required in such a setting. If it were easy, we'd all do it. They directed me in a manner that allowed my own medical proffesionalism to manage an otherwise awful situation. On top of that, once my dog was secure, a tech quickly emerged from the back, to bandage me up! Thank you!! Temporarily of course, with multiple recommendations to get my own wounds assessed appropriately. I was brought into a room quickly where the VMD educated me on the brief assessment they acquired. I will say, I didn't feel positive vibes at that point where my very down to earth vet gave me a realistic prognosis. Though, true to her word, I received my late night phone call as promised with confirmation of my pets pull through. Upon picking my girl up and bringing her home, I was able to examine the stitch work. Not the prettiest wound care I've seen, I questioned the docs experience, especially when I couldn't find her online or on the website. I'm all for teaching hospitals but I'm sure with limited tissue to start, she did to the best of her ability regardless of experience. I was provided with additional information that the skin was more challenging to close, therefore increasing my bill another $500. I am curious if perhaps if an "old school" vet would have had an issue regarding that, but frankly, my girl is home and healing. All in all, emergency care is not cut and dry and I am more than satisfied with the outcome. Should I land in another emergent situation, I know where I'm going.

One star is actually a complement. Last week I have to bring my do there that I had for 12 years. She's was I serious trouble and dieing. The staff did take there time to fully explain the procedure that could save her life. We were so relived. Then they explained we had to pay 3000.00 up front or go home and hope for the best. She passed in my arms that night and I ,ad sure when they called the next day to check on her to tell them. They are money hungry who take advantage of pet owners at the worst time. The vet even told me at a normal vet it would only be 500 but because they are emergency it's 3000.00! They are crooks! Check out Mercey Animal Hospital we brought our baby there she was cremated at half the cost of other vets and came home in an urn with a sympathy card memory coin pack of flowers told plant a garden in her memory and loving family certficate. Like I said check out Mercy animal hospital they do what they do for the love of animals not to rape your wallets when you are hurting the most

Patrice French

I can't say enough about how great the care was for my dog. I was there about a week ago and everyone was great from the check in staff to Dr Bushnell, the vet. She went above and beyond with explaining everything that was going to be done while also making sure i knew what the cost was. She called me daily and spent as much time as i needed to have questions answered. The discharge information was very thorough and I even got a follow up phone call this week to see how "herbie" was doing. I highly recommend this facility for emergent situations.

Lee Astin

My first and thus far only experience was an emergency, and I was taken in right away and my dog was given immediate professional care. The staff were informative and communicative. My dog was returned to me clean and in good spirits and did not seem to have had a bad experience despite his medical problem. I received detailed instructions and his records and prescription were faxed to my local veterinarian. Yes I most certainly would return to this facility, but I really do hope I will not need their specialists again any time soon. {If they were much closer I would transfer my business.) My deepest thanks to them.

Thomas Duarte

Quick, responsive, and professional approach to emergency vet care. Great job treating my dog during her emergency. Thank you.

Brian Mathers

I have, unfortunately for my wallet, been here a few times with my crazy mutt. Most recently, my guy (Ozzie) was attacked on a walk after hours and needed sutures. Ozzie was as happy as ever when he was ready to go home the next day (though very sleepy). They obviously took very good care of him when he was there - they even took me back to see him before I left for the night. I am moving out-of-state in a week and only hope that I can find a 24 hr vet in the area as good as OSVS , incase if I need one again.

Lawrence LeCours

The staff was great and the vets were exceptional. The vets were able to

I called ahead to let them know we were coming in. My dog was in extreme pain, couldn't bend his leg, and had an oozing hot spot. After two hours in a freezing room with no one checking in on us, let alone a vet coming in, we left. I've never had such a lack of help at an emergency vet before. Don't go here.

Researcher Drieson

We took our dog in at 9:30 PM because he couldn't lay down, due to pain. We were there until 3:30 the next morning. One thing that happened, we were told that we were going to get the medication and discharge papers in 15 minutes. An hour went by, and we still hadn't received anything. We went to the front desk and asked for the medication and papers. A staff nurse went into the back for about 5 seconds and came back with them. It makes me think, how long were they going to have us wait for them, when they seemed to be ready? He eventually got what he needed, and we left. We understand that you have emergencies that you have to attend to, but can you please hire more doctors and workers for the night shift? It seemed that there was only one doctor available for the whole place. And can you please update/check in with us while we're in the rooms waiting for prolonged periods of time?

Bernadette Messier

Brought our Boston Terrier in today after my local vet wanted to euthanize her last week for an unofficial diagnosis of cancer. OSV did some testing and offered advice professionally and personally. She does have the start of an aggressive cancer and it can be controlled with medication for now. The second opinion we received today put our minds and hearts at ease.

My wife called ahead on a Sunday evening that we we're bringing our 11year old Sheepdog who could not walk & was having difficulty breathing. The staff was ready when we arrived with a gurney to get him from the car. All the staff we interacted with were very nice & compassionate. I would recommend this animal hospital.

To make a very long story short, I am a fish keeper and I have had a fish for 10 years that has recently taken ill. I did not realize that Ocean State Veterinary Specialists had an aquatic doctor on their team! That is very difficult to find in a small state like Rhode Island. But always thinking that because they are a specialty facility, the cost of trying to treat my fish could not justify the cost to replace it, even though it has sentimental worth to me. So I reached out to the doctor, Dr. Littman, on Facebook to see if he could give me some assistance without being a patient. I was amazed that the doctor and his associate, Susan Pollitt, reached out to me and helped me over the phone without even being seen, without giving them one cent. It is so encouraging to know, that the people at Ocean State have the integrity and sincerity to put animal welfare before dollars. I am grateful. Thank you.

Dennis Cabral

My dog was having violent seizures and definitely needed to stay overnight for observation and care. They made him leave because they couldn’t wait the 24 hours I needed to get the 1000 dollar deposit they wanted to keep him. He’s now had 6 more seizures since we left about 12 hours ago. And it still cost 250 for blood work that told me everything I knew already and told them. I won’t be going back. I’m not surprised to see all the 1 star ratings given to this money first animal care second type of place. The receptionist was nice though. Fk this place they suck. If you have to drive the extra distance and go somewhere else it will probably be worth it.

On Saturday February 27,2016 we had to say good-bye to our beloved dog brewski <3 He was a happy, beautiful 10 year old boxer that brought our family much joy throughout his life .We had such a wonderful experience with your highly trained staff on the two different nights we chose to bring him there. The compassion & kindness that was shown was overwhelming to our three adult daughters , my husband & myself !! We sincerely want to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts <3

I brought my dog there on a Sunday when my vet was closed because she had a golf ball sized lump on her belly and was in a lot of pain. The staff there was extremely polite, attentive, thorough, helpful and caring with my little baby. I cannot say enough positive things about the exceptional service she received. It turned out to be the best case scenario in comparison of what the lump could have been (just a stomach infection that is being treated with antibiotics) but I am so grateful for the care she received from them. I even received a call from my vet first thing the next morning because they had already been informed of what happened. Thank you again!

DO NOT TAKE YOUR GUINEA PIGS HERE. I have three that I took her. Acorn, Peanut, and Hazel. Acorn was 2 1/2 Peanut was 3 and Hazel was about three months. When Acorn was sick they said she had mites and I spent time and money treating her for that and then the exotic animal specialist (who is the only one who seems to know anything about how to care for guinea pigs) came around and said she never had that. Then Peanut gets sick and she is weighed by two people and they told me she didn’t lose any weight and then the exotic vet specialist said she was skin and bones. Then I took my baby Hazel 6 DAYS ago because I noticed something was wrong and they said she was FINE and even the exotic specialist checked her out and said there was nothing wrong and then this morning I took her there around 2 and she dies 5 hours later. I spent thousands at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists trusting that these people know what they’re doing but it devastates me to know that for the third time they didn’t do all they could do to help my guinea pigs. I’m absolutely heartbroken and lost because I never want to go to this place again but not many places specialize in guinea pigs and even the ones that do don’t know what they’re doing. Be very careful when you take your guinea pigs here because it’s most likely the last time you will see them. If I could give 0 stars I would.

My cat was treated there earlier this week with an abscess on his right side. He was given 15 ml Clavamox 1cc 12 hrs until finished. The improvement has been great called yesterday to get a refill on the prescription and they filled it and I picked it up at their place. The cost was $46.00. They had already mixed it up. So had 10 days to use it. Well I got up a few minutes ago and gave beau beau his warm compress. I was concerned about the price they had charged me and wondering if it was available for around the same price online. Well it certainly is and it was roughly half the cost of their 46.00 figure I had to pay. This is of course highway robbery at best. Sad to see they feel they have to take me to the cleaners even after the 240.00 original vet bill. I will be hard pressed to go back there again trusting them to to be fair and honest in their treatment of my pets. I feel betrayed and taken advantage of and will make it a point to let our regular vet know about their ethics and price gouging practices. Well after having posted this review I took the liberty of looking at the reviews others have left. Sad to say perhaps I should have read the reviews before we ever took any of our cats there. The first experience was fine. But now having had this most recent experience makes me question everything now. I can appreciate the owners attempts at damage control but the replies seem scripted at best. Not even sure if I should have accepted the prescription already opened and mixed. The cat pictured was Joe Joe he was 31 lbs and could hold a soft ball in his mouth and could clear a four foot chain link fence with stopping at the top

Have had to bring at least 2 pets in for help..i already knew one had cancer..my dog..we had to say goodbye to her..that was sad. Euthinizing plus cremation is expensive. Although they were nice there Most recently my oldest cat had a neuralogical problem..I had the ONLY neuro doc for cats in the state. She and her staff were super nice and gentle. They did all they could for her which helped for awhile. When it came time to say goodbye, it was heart wrenching..but they gave her a little coffin, flowers and later on, sent me her paw prints and two cards in the mail. I have brought other pets there before when i said goodbye..one guy was semi sympathetic but i guess after awhile they kind of detach themselves. All in all, its a nice place, albeit expensive place. Shop around. But neuro doc is kind here and good staff with her.

My dog was throwing up for a few days and I feared it was serious so I took him in. After charging me over 1,000 they could not tell me what was wrong . My dog is still sick and I called in to speak with the vet and was given a receptionist. I was then told I could come back in and do more testing for god knows how much money. This place does not care about animals and they only care about money. The Amount of money they charged me to then tell me nothing is asinine. Once you are done paying they are done with you and your pet.

I have only ever been here to put my animals to sleep. I can't speak for the veterinary care or help they provide for sick animals who have a chance to pull through. I can only say they were respectful and we'll equipped to euthanize my ferret when no one else was open. They were able to quickly and easily put the drug into his vein with no mistakes, which is saying something because ferrets are small and veins hard to get. Wasn't expensive. Received nice card and an inked paw print of my ferret.

They saved my puppy's life, we adopted our puppy Arya in February and she started to becoming very sick, very quickly in about a weeks time. We brought her here and she tested positive for Parvovirus. They immediately went in to treating her, we told them the amount of money we could spend and they did everything they could to stay in that budget. We have had her back home for a little over two months now and she's just such a happy, strong, loyal puppy and we're so fortunate to have gone here when we did. I can't thank them enough.

Angel

They are a caring staff. Polite and respectful.

This facility provided great care, professional and comforting service, from the receptionist, technicians and doctor. Realizing after the fact that I called to check on status too often (every two hours) I can't believe I never caught a hint of annoyance. I received caring considerate service for my pet and I from first entry though followup calls.

My dog has been here several times for emergencies and most recently to see the neurologist. I’ve always had a great experience with the staff and Drs. The neurologist spent almost an hour with my dog getting to know his history and coming up with a plan. I can’t get a human Dr to spend more than 5 minutes in an exam room so it was nice to not feel rushed. The staff is always so patient with my dog which is a relief because he’s not the easiest to work with. The negative reviews on here should be taken with a grain of salt. Emergency and specialty care is always going to be more expensive than a regular vet. You are paying for the expertise of a specialist and with emergency you are paying for convenience.

I had the worst experience with Dr. White one of the surgeons at OSVS. I have been a long term client through the hospital. We have always had a good experience and everyone was friendly. Unfortunately, maybe a little too friendly. At my last appointment. Dr. White asked me out on a date. Which yes caught me off guard. Yet it got worse, when the technician brought me my dog, I asked if Dr. White was single.....no he is engaged to one of the hospital staff. What a creep. My dog and his care is now through a different hospital. What a creep. what an awful hospital.

We are a rescue who brought one of our foster pups in for emergency services which required him to be hospitalized. They were kind, compassionate and understood that we were financially in a tough spot. Everything was explained every step of the way and they stayed in touch multiple times a day. Dr. D'Adezzio was our primary point of contact and she was absolutely wonderful. She kept our spirits up and our costs manageable - she took her time and never sounded annoyed or bothered by our multiple calls. It was such a relief to work with her! Susan in the front office also kept us informed as well as working with us to remain positive about his prognosis! We could not be happier with the result - our little buddy is happy and home in his new forever family and OSV made it possible!!

We brought our dog in and thought who we thought was having a stroke.. they grabbed her , took her in the back and have her the best care for the next couple of days. She is ok, had vertigo thank God!! They are amazing!! Went in the back to see her and it was so busy , like a triage.. everyone was working so hard. We are so thankful for taking such good care of our Penny!!♥️

Anna

My cat swallowed a rubber band, and I was fearful of surgery. But, they were able to scope it out and keep her overnight. She's doing so much better at home now, thank god for them!

We had the absolute best experience if that is possible when you put your beloved pet to sleep. Some people think dogs are just animals, but some animals bring so much love & happiness to your family that their death is very sad. Dr. Andres was kind and compassionate. Saying the kindest things to us and making a very hard experience as good as it could be. My sons and I want to thank her for all she did for us and Annabelle and the lovely note she hand wrote in the sympathy card.

No emotion involved here as I write this review. I brought my 11 year old cat to this place. She had been receiving excellent veterinary care in Westerly, RI. She had some life threatening problems, but we were managing it well while waiting to get her ready for surgery. I also need to qualify my education and background. A medical scientist, although my aptitude is chemical engineering. Very solid background in pharmaceutics and pharmacology. Considered very well read by the medical doctors at Yale and Yale's associated hospitals. Be aware - this is human medicine, not veterinary medicine. So what do I think about Ocean State Veterinary Specialists? They do provide a valuable service, but I have some major concerns. Are they genuinely concerned about your pet's health, or are they just going through the motions? This place reminds me of a large teaching hospital like Mass General in Boston...you're a number at MGH and the compassion can be lacking. The veterinarians are young on the emergency side...2-3 years experience out of school seems to be the norm (look at the bios on the website). My cat was initially seen by a very kind DVM...female. Maybe three years experience. Good bedside manner, good listener, explained procedures well. She did question why I deviated from the standard Clavamox dose, but the standard Clavamox dose is the RECOMMENDED dose. I was trying to save a septic cat. The therapeutic index for amoxicillin is high, amox stability drops after reconstitution and content uniformity (mg amox/bottle) can vary. So if you have a solution that's four days old, only 950 mg active in the bottle prior to reconstitution and you need to get those blood levels up, you may be on the low side. I am willing to tolerate some minor side effects and increase the dosage frequency to get a better therapeutic response. That's the principal behind cancer chemotherapy. Highly toxic compounds but let's tolerate the toxicity to save the patient. I went to Ocean State today to get my kitty, but she wasn't working. Too bad...she's a good person and maybe she would like to learn a little more about pharmaceutics. There was another DVM there. Male. Critical care. Technically competent but a loser by all measures. I told him he needed to work on his bedside manner. I communicated this to the staff and they seemed to acknowledge this. He euthanized my cat today. I agreed with the decision although the onset of illness was rapid and caught me and my regular vet completely by surprise. He explained the procedure and I understood the agents used. But hey, I thought propofol was for induction and not for relief of pain (anesthesia). This guy told me I had been neglecting my cat and mismanaging her care. So answer this for me, hot shot...why did I just have four appointments in Westerly, RI in three weeks and then transport her to Ocean State for emergency care? So how did this conversation end? Depends on your point of view. "Look pal, you can basically go #$*& @!%+*." Maybe this is the first time he's heard this, and he's likely going to hear it again if he doesn't change his ways. It's a maturity issue with him...that I am certain. So will I ever go back? Probably not.

I cannot day enough great things about this vet office. We recently had to put down our 14 year old dog, Lucy. We knew it was coming, but not as soon as it happened. When she started to not be able to function on a Sunday afternoon, we panicked as our local vet office was closed. As Ocean State is the closest vet office opened, we got in the car and made the trip to put Lucy at peace and join her long lost doggy friends in doggy heaven. The staff here was exceptionally comforting and made something that can be so hard, a little less tough with their compassion and support. Making the choice to put your animal to sleep is hard in itself, so having this amazing environment to make this process less difficult was incredible. Afterwards, we made the trip up a week later to retrieve her ashes. When we got there, they had us meet them down the hallway, with a door right next to us to exit without having to walk back through the main entrance. These details add up and speak volumes about this facility. Included were her ashes, a letter to our family, her paw prints and flowers to plant on her behalf. At this point, we were beyond impressed and had no words to thank them enough. A few days later, we received a letter in the mail with over 5 different hand written messages from the employees at Ocean State recognizing our loss and sending their love our way. These hand written notes were so sincere and thoughtful. Ocean state has no idea how much they have helped my family and I make it through losing our dog. We love and appreciate everything they have done and will continue to return there for all of our veterinary needs!

Our now 14-year-old Doberman first saw cardiologist, Dr. Adam Kane in January, 2019 for degenerative valvular disease and DCM. Dr. Kane has been wonderful with our guy, and I could not be happier with my choice to take Baxter to OSVS. The exams have been thorough, well-documented, and I perceive that Dr. Kane truly cares about our guy’s well-being. The meds have been a great help, to the point that Baxter has shown some improvement at our last visit. I have no complaints about the costs. A shout-out also to Dr. Kane’s assistant, Christine, who is the best. We are grateful.

Went for a cut in my rabbit’s eye and they checked him out for free and told me to go back to my regular vet in the morning... I expected to pay a lot after the reviews but they were extremely nice and helpful.. I would have paid just to have them take care of my buddy

my dog got hit by a car n they did a excellent job on him..thank u so much..

My vet sent me to OSVA for emergency surgery. After I explained the condition, the tech asked why my vet had not done the surgery and rolls her eyes. When everyone after me was called in, it became obvious the tech had placed us on the delay list, so I asked to make an apptmt for another day. Refused by front desk. Found out we were assigned to a doc who was not scheduled to begin her shift for another 2 hrs. No one called me after my dog was taken in. So I showed up 3 hrs later to pick up my dog at the expected time. Then found out surgery would not start for another hour or more!: Once again, we were moved behind other cases. I reside in northern RI and have to drive on icy roads 45 minutes each way! The lack of respect and courtesy has been shocking. The ordeal took about 9 hrs, like a NYC ER experience for humans. And at the end, I was informed I would be taken to a room to speak w/ the doc. Never happened. Given bill and sent on my way, after a brief review by tech in the lobby: would have been a HIPAA breach for humans, So unprofessional. Very disappointing.

PLEASE - Don't bring your animals here. They deserve far better and you deserve far better. This is, by far, the worst experience I have ever had at any vet's office. I had gone here because I was told by a handful of offices that it is the only 24-hour office in RI that has ultrasound equipment on site and my dog was in dire need of care. My dog acted like he was trying to cough something up but hadn't expressed any symptoms: temperature, loss of appetite or thirst, lethargy. I'm dog CPR/First-aid certified and did the Heimlich maneuver on him but his hacking wouldn't subside and he had difficulty sleeping - that's when I knew something was terribly wrong. I brought him to his regular vet's office for an exam and bloodwork and the doctor called me immediately after getting the results. He told me his levels were dangerously low and to bring him to emergency right away and to get an ultrasound. So, I brought him to Ocean State. Everything seemed okay upon arrival. My dog was ecstatic to see everyone there, including the other animals. When they called us in, we waited in the room and I kept him on the leash. Sometimes when my dog was excited, he would jump up - vertically in the air - like a pogo-stick, but never on people. When the vet, Samantha Hmelo, came in, he did his vertical jump and she gave him a dirty look - I never experienced anyone giving any dog a dirty look before. She told me to take him off the leash. My 90-lb lab happily went over to greet her and she screamed out "OW! He BIT ME!". Please take this comment with a grain of salt. I watched the whole interaction and, aside from the fact that my dog had never and would never bite anyone, I saw he had stepped on her foot and his mouth was nowhere near her body. I responded to her comment politely with what I had seen myself, standing 5 ft away from her. As the visit continued, I explained to her the situation and was told that I should have an ultrasound performed on him and that, though he seemed be in good spirits at the moment, I knew something was wrong even if he wasn't exhibiting any signs while we were in the office. She replied snarkily, without doing any type of exam, "Well, he seems fine. Why don't you just take him home and feed him a soft diet." I was baffled that she'd say that. I told her that I'm not going to do that because I am in the office specifically for further testing, and I knew I would be charged for the visit for an exam either way. She then asked me what I thought I should do. I told her I had suggested to have an ultrasound but, ultimately, I was asking for her clinical thoughts because she is the professional. She said that the options were the ultrasound and to send a microscope down his esophagus. The latter she told me was $1500-2000, but that neither one may help. It was upsetting and bewildering that she, as an emergency clinician, would be so unhelpful. All she kept asking me is what I thought should be done, instead of giving me her medical opinion. Since I was the one to decide how best to diagnose the problem with my dog, I opted to do the ultrasound first and go from there. She told me she had to leave to get some paperwork. When she returned, she put it in front of me. It was a consent form to open my dog's chest up in the scenario that my dog had an unfavorable reaction while under general anesthesia. I questioned if was normal to be sedated for an ultrasound. She shot me a dirty look (similar to the one she gave my dog earlier) and said, "Yeah. He definitely needs to be put out." Long story short, my dog didn't need sedation because he was a well-behaved dog and the ultrasound showed he had a massive tumor. He was in the advanced stages of cancer. She was originally going to send him home because he was "fine" with a recommendation of a soft diet. Also, front desk. I checked out after his ultrasound, paid, and sat there for 2 hours, waiting for my dog. I asked where my sick dog was and they told me they had forgotten about him. Final chapter: My dog died 2 weeks later.

Staff at this facility were all very professional, organized and friendly. We were there to meet with Dr. Hunley after our husky had been diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma on his paw. Dr. Hunley spent a huge amount of time with us, presented us with several options for treatment, and he is a kind of pioneer insofar that he has adopted various treatments where he will insert chemotherapy at the site in order to avoid the systemic effects of giving it intravenously or by mouth with certain soft tissue sarcomas. He is really quite brilliant, and I would strongly recommend him if you find yourself in need of an oncologist for your pet.

I must say, through the years I've used ocean State for every dog I've ever owned and I'm always touched by the warmth of the staff ... A very special thank you to Dr. Sweet once again for the support and care of my dog Mackey. His gentleness and kind heart always amazes me. A top notch doctor, one whom I trust with my most valuable possession, Mackey ❤️. I wouldn't take my dog to any other specialist other than Dr. Sweet. The veterinarian technicians and front staff are an amazing team. Couldn't ask for more genuine, kind, warm and competent individuals. The care received from beginning to end is simply phenomenal. I'd like to thank you all for everything you do to make things easier duringd what's always a stressful time. I can honestly say, I truly love and appreciate all of you. With love and respect Beth Tasca-Fellows Mackey ❤️

I've had 4 visits to OSVS in the past year with one or the other of my two dogs and all I can say is that the professional, caring diagnoses and treatment they both received is top quality. Everyone there, from front desk personnel to the specialist veterinarians takes an immediate interest and all have shown nothing but compassion and caring.

Victoria Lombardo

I have never ever experienced such awful service in my entire life. My pet was bleeding out of her behind, shivering and breathing heavy and they made me wait 2 hours and I still was not seen. I ended up taking her to another hospital and I was seen right away. I’m DISGUSTED with ocean state.

Tara Satyamsetti

Be VERY, VERY careful with this animal hospital. Firstly, the receptionists & vet techs are great. The vet, on the other hand is not. I’m surprised she didn’t try to pick my pocket on the way out. I brought my Dachshund who was attacked by another dog there one evening. It’s convenient, they’re open 24 hours. My dog was taken into triage, gave them the basic info. After waiting awhile the vet comes in with an estimate of over $1,000. I had her go line by line with me. I challenged her too much & she came back with a much lower estimate. I come back the next day to pick up my dog & the woman @ the front desk says “yes, you owe 90.” I asked her for what. She literally had no idea. I had her go line by line. I was charged for an e-collar which I was already charged the night before. It was actually $3 cheaper the night before! I had some issues with his drain. My vet looked @ him & called their work “amateurish.” I took him back after a stapled busted on his laceration. I’m no expert but I did look up surgery staples on dogs. The pictures I saw were numerous, close together staples. This vet put FOUR staples on a laceration inches long which created gapping. She then says to me the wound is “infected.” That he’s not reacting well to the antibiotic & we should do a culture for $250. Yeah right. An infection with no fever or any other tell-tale signs. I declined & she gave me an attitude. After she re-stapled him with actually more than 4 staples his wound closed in days. If you bring your beloved pet here make sure to really go through billing. Something else interesting- they actually have a liaison on staff that fields complaints. Makes you wonder.

I have been to ocean state on three different occasions, my most recent was probably the scariest. I was woken up at 3am by my 11 month old puppy, Coletti, she had been making a coughing sound and I instantly realized she had swelling in the face and her tongue. I called ahead and they were ready when I arrived. The staff worked quickly, were extremely friendly and explained every step they took to get Colletti breathing properly again. I would highly recommend Ocean state Vetinary Specialist when you have an emergency with your fury friend.

Laura Warren

I can not say enough wonderful, positive things about Ocean State. Everyone that works there, from the front desk to the techs to the doctors are kind and so knowledgeable. They saved my dog's life and have continued to treat her in the best way possible and she is a happy, healthy dog! The information regarding your pet is communicated so well. The doctors spend time with you, explain everything and you just know they are the very, very best you could ask for to treat your animals! Thank you Ocean State!

Mark Brown

Called with my 8 year old house cat with breathing issues and they said to bring him in. When we walked in our cat was immediately taken into the back room, after @30 minutes we were called to the counter and she started throwing numbers at us for what we owe. Heck we had no idea what was going on, come to find out they mixed us up with another person, so they said hold on. They come back and start another dialog only to find out they mixed us up with another person. At this point I was getting very concerned for my best friend. After sitting down for another 20 minutes someone came out and asked us into a room. The cat had fluid in his lungs and they said it was not something that would get better so very reluctantly we decided to put him to sleep so he would not suffer. We asked to see him but they said we had to pay first before seeing, and saying good bye to him. Now the funky math, ER visit $125.00 max, injection to put him to sleep was quoted $45, cremation $20, total $238.00, sorry to say it does not add up. This may not seem like a lot of money for most but it is every penny we had. We found the staff mostly very very cold and uncaring and the business was very greedy. The fact that Money is the only thing that matters here is a very big turn off. I would NEVER recommend this place unless you have no other option like we did being a weekend evening, they are the only 24 hour vet in area.

I recommend coming here. My hamster Sasha had a tumor on her face which was huge and the exotic doctor performed a surgery on her and removed it. They took very good care of her and made sure that I was satisfied with the outcome. It is a little pricy but she tried to help me out with pricing it but it was so worth the money. My hamster is back and better than ever

I really can not say enough good things about Ocean State. They have gone above and beyond for my beloved Siberian Huskey Smokey. A few years back i thought i was going to lose him. He was very ill and bleeding internally. They took him right in and saved his life . The entire staff was wonderful. Now just yesterday i had to bring him back. He was very ill vomiting , not eating and just all around not doing well. Again they rushed my sweatheart in the back and within a few hours they new exactly what was wrong and had a treatment plan. My Smokey came home last night and is now eating and as far as i can tell well on his way to a full recovery. I could never thank them enough for everything they have done. Professional and caring. The entire staff is wonderful!

I don't usually write reviews, but I had an excellent experience here. Went in with a guinea pig showing possible early signs of an upper respiratory infection. Staff was kind, helpful, and saw to my little Ralphie promptly. (Of course they prioritize and see the sickest pets first but I was in and out within an hour and 45 minutes.) The vet spent several minutes with me going over the health of my pet an prescribed medication. The price was a little higher than other veterinary offices, but the kindness of the staff and quality of care is more than worth it.

Nicole Butler

My dog Bella was attacked by another dog and I can’t say enough about the impeccable care she was given. The Dr was very patient and explained everything. I couldn’t be more pleased with the care she received. I’m also extremely impressed with how attentive everyone was to also take care of my husband and myself as we had numerous dog bites. They were very helpful as far as providing us with a special scrub for our wounds as well as bandages and antibiotic ointment until we could get to an emergency room. Everyone was just wonderful!

Alicia Fountaine

I thought you help animals in the case of a emergency not rip them off !!! So lets see if you dont have thousands to save your pet they have to die?? Won't work with clients!! Think of the animals and the clients what they go threw!!

I had to rush my bunny, Zen, in this past weekend when he had been struggling to breathe. I had been able to get to the desk and tell them what was going on, the receptionist who was on for the Saturday night (12/16/17) was very quick to call someone up to come see him. The technician was very polite, I feel bad that I cannot remember her name (I was in such a panic), but she was nice and explained she was going to take him into their treatment area to get him some help. While we waited, I was doing papers and I could see how responsive they were to emergencies that came in and the waiting room was clearing out very quickly at the rate they were going. After about a half hour/45 mins, we were called into a room and the technician explained what was going on and what was being done. We waited another 20 minutes before a doctor had come in and had been able to go over everything that was happening. We had Dr Young and I was very satisfied with her. She was patient and showed general concern for Zen's condition and gave me some hope he would be alright. We talked about care and ways to better his life, she even gave me tips on how to litter box train him! She even offered to continue the eye drops that had been prescribed the day before for what his doctor thought was just conjunctivitis. She went over everything they had done and were planning to do once Zen was stable and went over the estimate and admission forms. There had been one part I was struggling with and that was if he had stopped breathing. She was very honest with me about that one and said it was hard to bring them back if they had stopped breathing and was very considerate about our concerns. I had wanted them to try, but she helped me see that trying to resuscitate him would be hard, and we opted not to do anything if he stopped breathing. The estimate was decent and only had to pay the low end for the night, I would have had to pay more if Zen was there longer. I was even able to go back and see him before I left to say goodbye. He looked sad, but the technician assured me they would take the best care of him that they could. And would update us in the morning. At 7:30 the next morning, we got a call he passed away. It was a hard loss as he was my baby, but I was thankful that he was in the care of the staff at OSVS. I love that they offered to have his ashes returned to me and are going to do a paw print for me. They offered for my family and I to go see him before he went, but we had declined. Though Zen passed away, I cannot thank Dr Young and the staff at OSVS for all they did to help him. I felt better knowing that he didn't suffer and went peacefully. I don't regret bringing him in to be seen and giving him a chance, I think I would have felt worse if I had opted to wait to take him back to his primary vet. In an emergency, I would no doubt bring my pets there.

Diane Marshall

I am retired and called to get a price to neuter my rabbit..they said between 6 and 7 hundred dollars when I called to inquire..this is outrageous!!! I adopted the rabbit am collecting social security and am given a price like this. The vets should be ashamed of themselves more interested in money then the animals.

Phillip Martin

Don’t bring your rabbits here. My rabbit was pregnant and couldn’t give birth for over 8 hours. We brought her here to see if anything could be done for her. We ended up waiting for 4 hours before our rabbit was even looked at, since she looked like she wasn’t in any “discomfort” they told us to bring her home and wait 24 hours and bring her back if nothings changed. We went to another vet for a second opinion that same day and My rabbit in fact NEEDED an emergency surgery that ended up costing her life and the lives of her litter. Shame on you.

Kaileen Nelson

Never stopped waiting. I have been waiting all together for 5 hrs for my pet to be seen. I am including the 3 hrs I sat here for till 3am, came back at 8:30am still haven't been seen. It's great if your pets is clearly injured or dying. But if your pet looks at all comfortable don't bother going here.

Shavaughn G

Saved our conjures life!!! Dr. Spellman was incredible with our baby girl she needed emergency surgery and she did an amazing job!!!!!!! Also brought in our ferret an the staff were very quick an very nice :)

Laurie Farrell

I recently lost my beloved dog Bella this past Sunday and brought her to be cremated. The lady who came out to the car to get her was compassionate for my loss and sorrow. When I picked up her ashes the young lady came around from the counter to hand her directly to me with complete respect for my recent loss. I have never been here before but would highly recommend to anyone who would need to bring their pet here. Thank you.

judalitza torres

Great service Dr. Huelsman repaired my cat's tail! She worked with my budget and even did his neuter. Thank you for everything. My cat on the mend and my bank account!

They are always very kind and accommodating here

Having read the review that saying this vet is cash cow, I hesitated to bring my lovely cat Bun there. As the only 24/7 Veterinary hospital with ultrasound equipment in RI, I had no choice but to give it a try. Their staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and they were trying their best to reduce my cost (they charged me only once for two emergency visits). Admittedly, their rate listed was higher than local Vet, considering their size and high standard facilities, this was still acceptable. Besides, they were also willing to recommend other low cost local vet (which has high reputation.). My personal experience with them is quite good, and would like to recommend them.

This review will not let me give them a zero. Customer service absolutely abysmal. Not really sure if the care I received was what I paid for. Went to check out with my dog, stopped at 8 10 for a 9 release was told she would be ready for 9. Got there at 9, checked out by 9:05, paid the bill with no real explanation, 15 minutes later a customer comes in after us, and their dog is out of the back in 5 minutes, we are still waiting at 9:30 I approached the desk where all the girls are having a party with three puppies and express my displeasure and why I am not checked out yet. Finally one of the girls says she will get us checked out, she says one of the discharge technicians has left, she apologizes gives us some paperwork that we read to try to figure out what we are supposed to do. Now understand we have a $2,000 bill we just paid. The doctor that gave me the initial information on Stella told me they would have 2 days of medication so I could get her prescription filled. They had none of it. Stella still had her IV and catheter in at 9:45. We left with Stella requiring medication at midnight they would not give me the required medication for her. All questions for the doctor where directed for us to call her in the morning. The doctor and discharge Personnel we're not there. I will never go back to that place.

Great place. They treated my kitty very well! A bit pricey, but good service always is these days.

My dog Bandit has been very sick, with diabetes, cataracts, kidney stones and now a uti. When we brought him in because he was peeing blood,we assumed he had an obstruction from the stones and would likely need emergency surgery. When we got to OSVS, our dog was seen immediately to evaluate his condition. They determined almost immediately that it was not an obstruction but rather a UTI. We took him home and a few hours later he started vomiting and would not eat. We took him back and once again, were seen immediately. At that point, we worked with the doctor who gave us the option to bring him home and treat him at home, but her recommendation was to admit him. We decided to admit because we knew, per her explanation, that our dog needed far more medical attention, including fluids and injections of the medication, that we simply could not provide at home. Also, being that sick, we felt that being in the hospital was his best bet. For those customers who leave bad reviews for the prices OSVS charges, I agree. There prices are high - but that is what you should expect for emergency care. Animals get sick, and many animals need emergency care. This hospital is open 24 hours with full staff available around the clock 7 days per week. Yes - you pay a premium for that. What I would suggest, and what made the decision for us to admit our dog without hesitation - which turned out to be the best decision for his care, is that you invest in pet insurance. I do not work for a pet insurance company, but it is money well spent. All animals at some point in their life will likely need medical care - if you care about your pet. Do yourself a favor and invest the $30 per month so that when you are faced with a decision for emergency treatment, your animal's health and well being aren't dictated by your wallet. I understand that animal care can be expensive, if you are not prepared. But owning a pet is a responsibility, not just a novelty. If you truly care about your pet's well being and want to be able to provide the care he or she might need, then get pet insurance. We are happy to report that our dog Bandit is recovering nicely and doing well thanks to the fully capable and competent staff at OSVS. I would recommend them without hesitation for my pet's care and treatment.

Definitely not an exotics vet. My bunny had a fractured jaw. My local vet could not see it but knew it. They completely missed it then when I said that there was something wrong with his jaw because he had been eating that morning, not only did they dismiss me but told me and I quote "you're not a vet ". I realize that hence why I brought him there however I sure as heck know when my bunny is not feeling right. Well I made the mistake of trusting them and not only did he have a fractured jaw but an infection from the lack of correct treatment. The infection turned to an abscess in days and actually pushed his eye out. He was rushed to emergency surgery at Tufts (a veterinary hospital I do highly recommend) where they saved his life but it cost him his eye and me an extra $3000. I actually called Ocean State to discuss it and they just offered to refund me $75 and didn't want to discuss it. I didn't care about the money. I didn't want another bunny to suffer because they ignored the one person that knows him best. Just as a side note their "exotics" specialist did her study with primates. While fascinating not of much use to people with bird and bunnies.

Our Pekingese had a horrific eye trauma, proptosis. We got her to Ocean State in less than 15 minutes from the incident. They did triage and see her immediately. The front desk moved us into a room fairly quickly, but when you’re shaking and covered in blood, a little sympathy and support would be appropriate. The tech just took her and said “awww”. I can’t sign a bunch of forms at the desk or in the waiting room while shaking and crying. Put me in a room, please!!! The vet said they had to take the eye. He was great and called me twice after the surgery with updates. The discharge was scheduled for 9:30 am the next day, and it took an average amount of time. Those techs were very kind. Here’s why my review is 2 stars.... nobody called us in the days following the surgery to see how my dog was. She went home on three medications and with stitches in her missing eye. We went home with a dog that suddenly had one eye. It is a big adjustment for her but for us as well. Seeing your dogs eye pop out is very traumatic. It would have been nice to get a phone call to see how she was doing and how we were too. She’s walking into things and can’t see her food and we are left with no support.

I wanted to say a special thanks to Jamie Resnick and the staff at OSVS. My healthy, well-mannered2 yo Belgian Shepherd started showing bizarre signs of obvious discomfort and potential mild to threatening illness. Her bowels had been normal, so I was concerned. I brought her in as her signs did not dissipate rather increase. Everyone was professional, kind, and communicative. Resnick was informative, knowledable and relatable. I felt confident Maisie was in great care. I left with more knowledge as well and although it was an unexpected cost and ended up being (fortunately) nothing serious, it’s better to be safe then sorry. We are not permanently local so thank you for a great ER experience in RI. Sofia and Maisie

I am compelled to write this critical review of our recent experience. It was the weekend so we couldn't see our regular vet. We feel the ocean state triage and admittance process is woefully inadequate, resulting in truly sick pets needing to wait many hours for treatment. My cat was clearly injured (in pain, could not walk). We were told 3 hr wait. It was actually 5 hrs before the vet first saw my cat, then another 3 hrs before he received an x-ray and were dismissed with pain meds. He was misdiagnosed. Our regular vet, who we saw 2 days later, found 2 deep puncture (bite) wounds. Our cat obviously needed a string dose of antibiotics, plus rabies booster. During the nearly 8 hrs I was waiting at ocean state, I saw many pets admitted with trivial non-emergencies, such as "looks fine but didn't drink much yesterday," "didnt poop on his walk". Admitting healthy animals is resulting in overstretched resources. I would not recommend going there, especially on weekends.

Me and my fiance´ went out for a few hrs in our boat, we came home to seeing a living room full of my medication pills spread all over, my pitbull got into my purse and into another makeup bag inside(the purse was up high), needless to say, our 1 1/2 yr old Brindle Pitbull had overdosed on four different types of medications, we could tell that he had just recently ingested them but as the minutes had passed, he became very lathargic, we scooped him up and within 15 minutes were at Ocean State Vet Hospital. I ran in carrying my baby boy, and was immediately greeted by the receptionist and a tech who asked what was wrong, I told them he overdosed on my medication, as soon as I said that, the tech scooped him from my arms and rushed him into the back, at this point he was barely conscious. I started crying and the receptionist comforted me and helped me fill out the paperwork. They gave our boy a shot to make him throw up, which didn't work, so they put a tube down his throat and fed him charcoal. Our bill came to a little over $400, which we didnt have, so the receptionist offered the Care Credit Program, which we applied for and were approved for a $1200 limit. We were there for about an hour and a half, when our boy came walking out from the back, tail wagging and all! I couldn't believe it, I thought for sure we were going to be in for bad news while we sat there waiting. There's no price I wouldn't pay to save my baby boy and the care he recieved with such urgency was just wonderful! I can't thank them enough for saving my baby! I highly recommend them! And Reese thanks them too!

Our 6 year old American Eskimo we brought him to this place he was sick so what they do before they treat your animal is want money upfront, so they give you 2 prices the high which is what the total would cost and the low is what you need that day or they won't treat the animal, so mine was 2800.00 the high and low was 1478.00 and that's what I paid, so they did all kinds of test and ultra sounds and said he had diabetes and was in 4 days, 4 weeks later he didn't look good and brought him back now let's get back to the first time I had to pay the other 1400.00 for 2800.00 now 2nd time same thing 1400.00 low 3200.00 high so gave them 1400.00 he was in for 3 days and when we picked him up had to pay 1600.00 now I started to take him to a regular vet which we made a appointment 2 days of him being home, they gave us a appointment a week later and told us he had cancer and the dog would have to have several surgeries and go thru chemo and told us that we could do that but he would suffer and he would not put his dog thru all this I mean this baby was suffering so we had him put down and we miss him so much but I showed him all my bills from this hospital and he said they should of found this so I am going to call my credit card company and dispute these charges, these people are all about money they don't care and I am going to get the word out on all online sites I even have a interview in a week with eyewitness news so take it from me don't go to this place Justine Johnson has not been forgotten

I feel the vet used scare tactics to have my dog hospitalized by saying he was "severely" dehydrated. When I picked him up, the paperwork from the vet said, at arrival, vital signs were normal and seemed "slightly" dehydrated. To save money I brought in my own pets meds from home. They informed me they would still charge for administation. When I picked him up, they handed me the same amount of pills that I brought! I was still charged when it was obvious they didn't give him his medicines! They also sold me the same medicine they sold me two months prior. When I said I still had the tablets at home, they told me they probably expired! I brought in food for them to examine to see if this could make him sick. Instead of examining the food, they fed it to him!!! Always at least a three hour wait! Would not recommend this hospital!
