My Beautiful Lady Grace, whose name epitomized her presence in our lives, was referred to Big River Veterinary during the final months of her physical life. By the time she exhibited discomfort and although surgery was an option the staff (whom, to this day, I describe as Angels), allowed her final three and half months to remain a dignified and loving, honorable and comfortable time while I adjusted to the remainder of my lifetime becoming without my gracious little side kick. I will always be grateful for meeting as strong and loving community within the walls of Big River Veterinary Services Office. My 18 year old cat fell down the stairs just before closing. Big River stayed open until I got there. Dr. Cardosa examined her and found nothing broken. He put her on an extra strength pain reliever. The office called the following day to check up on her. After a week of slow improvement she can now get around OK. I'm so thankful for the help and trust Big River with appropriate care for my older cats.

Took our two doggies to a first visit with Dr. Dan. He did the exam, shots and even took a large skin tag (benign tumor) off our female dogs head. This thing has been on her head for years. We always had to be careful of not hitting it when grooming her because it would bleed. She would make it bleed when she rolled around on the floor or playing. Dr Dan confidently removed it in just a few minutes with zero pain to our dog. Dr Dan is what I call a "one stop shop". He doesn't try to get you to spend money on tests that are not necessary. On a second trip there, to just stop in and pick up my flea control. Stupid me did not even check the hours before arriving and they still got up, unlocked the doors and completed business with me so i did not have to make a return trip and get this, they did it all with a great welcoming attitude. Now that is great customer service. If you're on the fence, trying to make a decision about what vet to see, don't delay. This guy and his staff are really awesome. Thank you for keeping costs low and providing great service.

Very happy to live within 15 min of this vet. We recently moved to RI and needed a new doctor for my dog who was bit at doggy daycare. Big River accepted us as a new patient and got us an appt within a very reasonable amount of time. The vet tech and doctor were both very kind to me and my dog. They were very understanding and explained things well to me and they got us in and out super fast as I had to scoot to work right after. I’m telling everyone to take their animals there. Our GSP recently needed TPLO surgery. We made a few surgery consultation appointments with doctors in the RI/MA area who performed TPLO surgery, and we - and sometimes our dog - didn't feel comfortable with any of them. I did some more research, and found Big River Vets. I am so glad I did. Dr. Cardosa and his staff are warm, knowledgeable, and really care about their patients (and their patient's parents). We immediately felt at ease with them and booked a surgery appointment on the spot. The surgery went very well, and our dog was home with us that night. Recovery was hard because our puppy has a ton of energy and wanted to run when she shouldn't have, but Big River Vets were always just a phone call away when she got into trouble. Aside from her wanting to run, the recovery from surgery itself was fine because Dr. Cardosa did an amazing job. We are now 3 months out, and our puppy is doing great. We are so happy that she's back to normal and will be in shape for her summer hiking season. If we ever needed a TPLO surgery again, I would not hesitate to go to Big River Vets. They are the best.

I have had the most wonderful experience with Dr Dan and the staff at Big River and I would highly recommend him!! My little Westie was diagnosed with lymphoma 3 years ago and he has been in remission thanks to the treatment. I did not have the money at the time and the staff helped me get a Care Credit Account that first day we arrived. It did not cost all that much money as Dr Dan's fee's are very reasonable compared to other places. He is truly an animal lover and you can sense that about him when you meet him!! I met Dr. Dan and his staff for the first time when my German Shepherd was just 8 weeks old. Although I have had many pets and have been to several local vets over the past 30+ years, I went to Big River because I heard that Dr. Dan was really good and volunteered overseas to care for military K-9s. I knew my puppy had a medical problem and it was confirmed on our first visit that she would need surgery. I called several days before the scheduled surgery and asked if they could move it up as I was afraid she would not make it. Much to my relief, the surgery was done the next day. She is now 3 1/2 and every time we go to the vet Dr. Dan makes us feel like she is as special to him as she is to us. Dennis and the rest of the staff are very caring and compassionate. I travel 30 minutes to get to Big River and would not take my dogs anywhere else.

Dogwood Labradors, a breeder of English show and work lines, has been a loyal client of Big River Veterinary Service for over two decades. We have watched Big River Veterinary Service perform emergency surgeries, teaching surgeries and general maintenance with our dogs that other vets can not do! Along with this, their pricing is very fair, and we don't have to travel very far to get this "top-notch service". Their staff is friendly and we know they really care about the health and well being of our dogs. Because of the personalized service, attention to detail and quality of care we have not seen matched anywhere, we would not consider another vet in the area and could not more highly recommend Big River Veterinary Service.

I would like to say that I was happy that Dr. Cardoza and the nurse took good care of Smudge, I'm going to rate you 4 1/2 stars for showing that you care about animals, your prices are a bit expensive though, need to bring down the costs down a bit other than that no complaints

At 8pm on a Tuesday…my dog broke her leg in half. I was forced to take her to an emergency vet where I spent a ridiculous amount of money for some X-rays, and was told that she would need orthopedic surgery to repair the break. The quote for surgery from this place made me immediately burst into tears. The next day, I called Big River Veterinary Services, and was quoted HALF of that cost for the same surgery. But the best part was that it wasn't half the care. The staff at Big River, along with Dr. Cardosa, made me feel incredibly at ease and comfortable throughout the entire process. They were kind, comforting, and explained everything THOROUGHLY, which I was very appreciative of… 6 months later and I can't get my pooch to stay still - her leg is COMPLETELY healed. Needless to say, I switched my primary veterinary care (for both of my dogs) to Dr. Cardosa and his amazing team, and plan to have this be my veterinary home for years to come. I would recommend Big River to anyone looking for a great veterinary practice that truly cares about their furry patients and their owners.

Not the friendliest vet, staff is very nice, vet is not, I showed up before they opened, just looking to find out if my dog was in a life threatening situation or not and he couldn't be bothered to get off of his computer to check. He told me I would have to wait until all the dogs were checked in, mind you I'm the only person there and he is standing 15 feet away.

I was so pleased by the compassionate and affordable care that was given to my first Golden Chloe, when I had the wonderful opportunity to became "Mom" to my second Golden I had no hesitation on bringing her in to Big River. If it is an emergency or just a check-up they take the time to answer your questions and address any concerns you might have. They truly do their best to calm my nervous pets. Benoni was diagnosed with an inoperable tumor on his spine (neck) just before Christmas. Dr, Cardosa put him on prednisone -his two front legs were paralyzed and then the back ones. For 6 days I moved him, changed his positions, and moved his legs. He cried when he had to use the litter box and I held him in it and cleaned him. Then one morning he got up and walked to it himself, and has acted normal since. I added shark cartilage to his food since the prognosis wasn't good. He had another x-ray 3/13 and Dr. Cardosa said the mass didn't show up on the x-ray and he can be weaned off the prednisone. Never give up on your pet until their last breath

My experience here? Better than wonderful. A previous Vet prescribed an antibiotic that could have killed my dog,due to an allergy. They then had me feeding him boiled chicken and white rice for ten months. Dr Dan was quick to note a stomach infection,in one visit. I treated him and he improved but damage has been done that hasn't completely healed. My belief.....Big River saved his life when for 10 months the problem was overlooked. Thanks and GB......

Dr. "Dan" is dangerous as a vet in my opinion. We took our male dog in for ear infection. Dan did such a wonderful job that within a week, our dog was deaf and had to be brought to Tuffs in Boston to be taken care of CORRECTLY. Our other dog is 15+ and in distress because she is blind and deaf. We asked Dr. "Dan" (ya right) to prescribe Prozac to calm her since we cannot even take her out to pee anymore because of her anxiety. Dan said "you gotta bring her in!!". We live 40 minutes away. How do you think this old blind and deaf dog will do riding in a car? She wouldn't make it! He refused to do it and continued to demand we take her in for an office "visit". Taking her "in" would just about finish her in her final weeks/months of life and can't be considered. Unless of course we had a little Prozac to give her for the ride????????? HELLO!!!! What a moron to not make her final moments as calm and pain free as possible.This place doesn't care about the animals at all in my opinion and only cares about the money to fund their vacations and new cars. What they put my previous dog through (over an ear infections that was mishandled) before it died) was not only extremely painful to my dog..............but their incompetency complicated my dogs infection and costs us thousands at Tuffs in Boston. Thanks Dan for your concerns and courtesy for my poor poor dog. Stay away folks. If you love your pet. Course, that's only my opinion. And as you said; if she did prescribe it, why call you? She does have access to AND CAN prescribe medications but asked YOU to fill them! Duh ! ! ! What a ridiculous claim. Nice try but really? Are you that stupid? The reality Dr. Dan (as you and I both know) is that the physical damage done to my dog Scooby at your clinic destroyed his inner ear and it ultimately caused brain infections that almost costs him his life. Instead it costs us thousands and thousands of dollars because of your (or one of your cleaning girls) ineptness. And with the MANY MANY times my wife and I have seen your UNLICENSED STAFF doing procedures to animals THAT THEY ARE NOT LICENSED TO DO, we continue to wonder if that destruction was done by one of "them" who hired to clean tubs and collect credit cards. Also Dr. Dan; if you'd actually LOOK at her medical file, you'd see that YOU prescribed an anti-anxiety med for her for her anxieties and nervous condition. She does NOT have a brain tumor. She is blind and old and scared. Once again, you misdiagnose. We "brought her in" recently remember and said "This will be her last trip. She can't handle it any more". And you said "No she can't". Thanks Dan for once again showing your ignorance and incompetence with the ridiculous reply and attempt at blaming the customer instead of owning your error. So much for "The customer is always right" within your organization hey? And the fact that you rushed to reply simply tells me instead of you taking care of animals, you're on the internet responding to reviews. Business slow today or is this your usual work day (to reply to the review within hours seems concerning)? My opinion......................RUN PEOPLE RUN. I found this fabulous vet when I had an emergency. My goats were attacked by a dog and I could not find anyone that could take them. The great people at Big River told me to come right in, no worries. I was so happy with both the service and the price, I transferred my dogs to be cared for too. The entire staff is friendly, caring, and they truly love the animals. This is one of two veterinarians which I have found that I would trust with my animalsj, and the other one moved away. I have had animals all my life and a long string of vets, so I do have a lot of experience. These people are really fantastic!

I like bringing my three dogs to this clinic. Dr. Cardosa is a natural and very competent. My one dog is very nervous he was magical with her. Lisa the tech is a great too.

OMG... so glad to have been referred to the best vet clinic ever! Dr. Dan, Lisa and staff I am thrilled to have our mature "not so friendly" calico cat become a patient. It seems all Princess needed was people to understand her temperament AND then she was finally diagnosed with what we thought could not be determined, an ear yeast infection. I had brought her to three separate veterinary clinics who checked but no resolution. Princess also had other issues that Dr. Dan saw as symptoms of another problem. Dr. Dan continued to address Princess with affection AND he offered her a treat. THAT HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE. The results, very happy parents and a very anxious calico kitty who was able to curl happily into a ball in their office.

I brought Toby, my english bulldog puppy in to Big River Vet Services for a checkup on one of his legs. We weren't sure if he needed to be operated on or not. Our experience with the vet and staff was wonderful. Toby didn't want to leave after his exam and their prices are very reasonable. They also diagnosed a skin problem that we didn't know that Toby even had. I would refer anyone to go their.

Our pup Mr. Bingley got both of his CCL's repaired here. Dr. Dan and his staff were AMAZING. When going over our options they never pushed the more expensive one--which is generally recommended for dogs Bingley's size and were understanding that even the cheapest option was tough for us to pay for. When we ended up choosing that cheaper option they asked many questions to ensure that it would work for our guy (luckily he's a couch potato) and supported us in that decision. Their prices are the best in the area and I found so much solace in the fact that I got to know the surgeon who would be operating on our boy. I trusted them all with Bingley's life and even though it was scary leaving him there, I knew he was in the best hands. Bingley does not do well waking up from anesthesia so each time we had to pick up him up soon after he woke up. Before we got there they loved on him and tried to comfort him as best they could. Bingley struggled a bit (I did to) for the first few days after his surgery and they always answered my multiple phone calls a day with kindness, calm voices and a wealth of information and comforting advice. When Bingley needed his other knee done we called them to set it up without hesitation. Big River Vet will always be my first phone call if any of my dogs need surgery in the future and I cannot say enough good things about them.

My cat started losing weight when he was almost 10 yrs old. His old vet couldn't tell me what was wrong. so I tried Big River. My cat had a kidney stone. Can you imagine the pain that he would have endured if I hadn't tried Big River? My cat-buddy, Arthur's Legend, had been through many vet visits in his life, but Big River's tech man, Dennis, was the first human that Arthur had ever asked for. So, even though it was nearly an hour's drive, round trip, I switched to Big River and vet trips became easier than I had ever seen. Arthur trusted the whole team, but just LOVED Dennis, and although Arthur might still object to some treatments (e.g. the enema!) he never came home traumatized again. As Arthur aged, he needed to go in a little more often for blood tests because things can go pear-shaped quickly in older cats. Blood tests were never, ever a "big deal" with Big River Techs. As Arthur aged, Dr. Cardosa always made time for my best little buddy and ALWAYS ALWAYS was right on the money with his diagnoses/treatments. In Arthur's 18th+ year, his kidneys started to fail for real, and Dr. Cardosa taught me how to give subcutaneous fluids which gave Arthur and me an extra year and a half of joy!! Priceless! As Arthur continued to age and started to fail more, the long car ride was hard on him, and one Friday night he started showing blood in urine,so that Saturday (BigRiver is closed Sats) I took him to his old vet for an update visit. BIG MISTAKE! The old local vet traumatized him for a mere blood test. she pulled out a hunk of hair on his neck and blinded him (raised blood pressure detached retinas). When I got home, I could see that something was really wrong, so I called and her answering service refused to call her for me at 3 minutes past 5:pm!! (There is a slight chance of improvement if blood pressure is brought down in a hurry). Also, during the visit,she refused to X-ray (I wondered if the kidney stone had multiplied) and she put him on antibiotics for a PRESUMED UTI (unnecessarily). On Monday, Dr. Cardosa X-rayed and found that the blood was from many stones and crystals throughout. Dr. Cardosa was able to give me the "heads up" that this could be the beginning of the real end. A long weekend was coming up and I told Dr. Cardosa that if Arthur's end was near, I did NOT want to be driving up to Ocean State in holiday weekend traffic with a carsick and dying cat. With his usual compassion and problem-solving skills, Dr Cardosa gave me meds so that Arthur and I could decide when it was "time" and to let us say goodbye in our own home and on our own terms. Arthur was sound asleep when we drove through the holiday traffic to Ocean State for the final "euthanization". If there is any way a vet could be better, I surely can't imagine it. Price? Gosh, I'm not sure what the other reviewers could mean. Dr. Cardosa always did his very best to keep the price down, and I cannot remember all the "breaks" and "freebies" he gave us. Sure, vets are expensive, and I can understand peoples' "shock". But it is not their salary you are paying for: it is the horrific profits that BigPharm,, equipment suppliers et al. are raking in that are driving up costs. Furthermore, you get what you pay for. How happy do you think I was to pay the other vet's cheaper bill for blinding my cat, having her refuse my request for X-ray. and then pump unnecessary antibiotics into him? There are many other instances where Dr. Cardosa demonstrated his superior diagnostic skill, but this is long enough. If I get another pet, I will go back to Big River always, because I am willing to pay what I consider to be a more-than-fair price for a vet whom I can trust to give the smartest, most compassionate care to my animal companion.
