The doctor and staff truly care about the animals they treat, and the families that care for them. We receive a wealth of clear care information allowing us to better care for our animals at home. Space Farms Zoo has been using the Animal Hospital of Sussex County, Dr. Ted Spinks V.M.D. since 1986. Dr. Spinks and his associates are great with exotic, native and farm animals. They have performed successful surgeries on African lions, tigers, leopards, and kangaroos. Dr. Spinks has also given medical care to newborn lions, lynx, foxes, groundhogs, raccoons, Assateaque ponies and tigers. Dr Spinks advised me on the care of chipmunks that I had raised since their birth and he knew to feed them carrots so they would turn orange instead of keeping the brown color fur they first grew! That gem of information was not in a single article I had read or my years of college training on the rearing of such small animals. I raised a ring-tailed lemur, head the size of a walnut, body the size of ½ spool of thread, with 4 scrawny legs and a tail. When No Chance the lemur needed a check up, Dr. Spinks took it in stride as No Chance careened through the exam room and finally landed on Dr. Spinks’s shoulder. Dr. Pam Schott, D.M.V., has given medical exams to leopards, lions, coatimundi, tigers, lynx, kangaroo, foxes, snakes, partnered on surgeries and advised us on exotic parrot care. She is a renowned avian expert, I have seen her take blood from a wild farm goose, (in a second!), for a transfusion to a pet goose patient. She used acupuncture to revive the heart of a kangaroo during surgery. I was very impressed. Dr. Lori Walker is a Lymes disease expert and has a special affection for hoof stock. Dr. Courtney Scairpon is wonderful with all animals.There have been times when our diverse species of animals have needed the kind, compassionate care the Animal Hospital of Sussex County provides. We have the Animal Hospital of Sussex County on speed dial. We know that if we need them they will be here at the zoo or available at their office. We highly recommend the Animal Hospital of Sussex County because they have the knowledge, experience and they care.

I wouldn't take my animals anywhere else. I have been trusting my animals to Animal Hospital of Sussex County for over 20 years. Over the years they have cared for my guinea pigs, chickens, cats, dogs, calves and cows. We had a couple of sick calves and Dr. Spinks always promptly returned my frantic calls, answered all my questions and went out of his way to provide quality care when we needed him to provide house calls. I can't say enough good about Dr Scairpon. She took such good care of my cat Buddy. She clearly loves being a veterinarian and it shows in the way she cares for the animals she treats. We have called them after hours for emergency treatment a couple of times and they have always responded promptly. Over the years my animals have been treated by each of the veterinarians here and they are all amazing. The staff is friendly and always willing to answer questions. Grooming is also available here. Sarah has been grooming our dogs for years and does a great job.

Excellent Service. Their receptionist are very polite and caring. I took my rabbit to be spayed and I was please with the outcome. After the procedure was done I was call. The nurse provided me with instruction how to care for my bunny. She supply us with the oral syringe, urgent care food and some pain medication. On the next day of her surgery she was taking bits of her food and going potty. Also the hospital gave us a call of her well being.

Professional and caring are two descriptions of staff. Their prices are also not crazy expensive since many animal care centers are. They are also very cat friendly which is huge for us. They also followed up with a call the next day from treating our cat. We will be transferring our records to this animal hospital from another care center.

I could not be any happier with my experience here. They truly care about you, and know that your pets are family. Unfortunately I had gone to a previous vet in Hamburg that misdiagnosed my dear pet, and therefore my first time here was to get my best friend put down due to health complications. They made my best friend and I feel at home and comfortable. They were very very nice. They made sure my dear pet was comfortable, got him a blanket to lay in, even gave him back to me in a sturdy box with a lid. To my surprise they even made an imprint of his paw with his name and are going to mail it to me to keep as a keepsake of my best friend. Please read if you're thinking about going here for critical/emergency care. In August I took my guinea pig Oreo here, after she fell very ill. She stopped eating, and had discharge coming from her eyes, and was extremely lethargic. The vet told me that Oreo had really abscessed lymph-nodes. Because of the pain this caused, she had stopped eating, and fell ill. She said our best bet was to do surgery on her to remove them entirely, but if they didn't do the surgery, the lymph-nodes, because they were so swollen, would eventually pop, and could at any moment. But before surgery was even discussed, she needed to be treated for her illness, first. They gave us liquid food to syringe feed her every 3-4 hours plus a medication, and pain killer, both twice a day. After 5-6 days she should be a lot better, and at that point we are to re-visit, and start to talk about possible surgery. The only issue (or so I was told), is that the surgery could be anywhere from $478.00 to $628.00 (more than likely $500.00 range), and my parents aren't willing to pay for it, especially after the $150.00 visit today. Knowing that without it, her lymph-nodes will eventually pop, she will get sick again, this time a lot worse, and bacteria may get in her bloodstream, proving fatal. She could very well die without this surgery. They then proceeded to say they could not do the surgery while she was so weak/sick. They gave me pain killers, a medication that would supposedly bring the swelling down a bit, and critical care for me to force feed her. The next few days she remained by my side 24/7, in a box next to my bed. She was only getting worse. Then I took her out, sang to her, said my last goodbye here on earth to her, and she had some sort of spasm/seizure/attack/her body's last effort, before she fell limp in my arms. They didn't tell me that her current condition other than the lymph-nodes could so quickly and easily prove fatal. They mentioned it vaugely that due to the sickness the lymph-nodes had caused, they would have to wait until she was feeling better to do the surgery. They told me she would be better in 5-6 days, yet she only got worse, and soon died in my arms. I love you Oreo.

Recently our 12 yr. old Brittany became quite ill with a gagging cough that would not remit. We reached out to emergency vets who offered 24/7 care or emergency care. We came up empty handed.As a sidebar I am preparing for back surgery in Cleveland. I needed help yesterday for my dog. I remembered a friend who had spoken of Dr. Spinks at the Animal Hospital of Sussex County. He took Davey immediately. It was clear that I was dealing with a true Doctor of veterinary medicine. Dr. Spinks is not a vet who only does well care or hands out pills with the hope that your pet will get better. He is a dedicated diagnostician. His treatment of Davey was thorough and complete. He explained everything he did as we went along. At present our dog''s cough has stopped. We are still awaiting some final test results and trust that whatever happens Dr. Spinks will be there for us. I cannot recommend a vet more highly than Dr.Spinks. He is a the real deal - a doctor that treats animals in the same fashion and with the same dedication as a doctor who treats humans. Both my husband and I are beyond grateful for his care.

I'll start with the good. The place is nice and it's always empty. As for the bad, the vets are not that knowledgeable and they don't seem to care about your pet. It's not that they are noticeably rude to you or your pet, but there does seem to be a lack care which becomes very apparent when your pet is seriously ill. I brought my dog there when he had kidney problems. I didn't know he had kidney problems and neither did they. They sent me home saying to watch him for the next couple days, but I didn't listen. I went straight to the vet in Newton and they told me his kidneys where failing and that he needed IV's ASAP. I spent over 100$ here to find out nothing. I'll never be go back and I'm posting this as a warning to others.

The BEST veterinary services you will find... anywhere! We have been visiting this practice since 2015 and are HIGHLY satisfied. When we got our first mini pig, we were looking for a vet who had related experience. Animal Hospital of Sussex County (Dr. Ted Spinks in particular) came highly recommended from a number of sources. Dr. Spinks and the entire staff are compassionate, caring, and highly knowledgeable. Their smiling faces are a welcome sight every time we visit with our pigs. With over 32 years of experience in veterinary medicine, we feel comfortable and confident placing the health and well being of our pigs in the hands of Dr. Spinks, and the staff. When one of our mini pigs was bitten by a tick and contracted Lyme Disease, she became very ill, and we were afraid we might lose her. An emergency visit to see Dr. Spinks resulted in an early enough diagnosis to save her life. He charted a course of treatment that resulted in her recovering. We are thankful for the services of Animal Hospital of Sussex County, and HIGHLY RECOMMEND them to anyone seeking quality veterinary care.

I brought both my dogs to Animal Hospital of Sussex County after a very displeasing experience at another local animal hospital. Their over aggressive approach after a misdiagnosis almost cost me my dog's life and a $11k in bills when finished from them and the veterinary university hospital I rushed her to who cleaned up their mess. When it was time for her to be released and sent home I chose to have Dr. Courtney Scairpon follow up with her care. She has been my boyfriend's vet so I knew how great she was and the rest of the staff. Dr. Courtney was amazing from start to present. She communicated with the Doctors back at Cornell and took the time to reassure me my dog was doing great. Now both my dogs are under their care and I won't go anywhere else. They've worked with us on billing since we use CareCredit and have Pet Insurance and I never feel rushed or pressured into anything. I like to take a natural approach to their well being and they support that and I feel they guide me well when I need their expert advice. Dr. Courtney is great at taking time to explain or discuss anything I worry about and she is wonderful with the dogs. They love her. She treats them as if they were her own fur babies. Already had my sister transfer her cats into their care after she saw how great they were when she came with me on a visit. You won't go wrong bringing your pets here.

My husband and I have brought our chinchilla to the Animal Hospital of Sussex County more times than I can count at this point, due to her dental and kidney issues. Dr. Schott is so wonderful; she has taken such good care of our fur baby. Always willing to help, respond to emails and calls after hours, and help us to help our chinchilla. The clinic itself is very clean and organized, very welcoming. Unfortunately, both my husband and I start work very early in the morning. But, the clinic is understanding of that and allows us to drop our chinchilla off early in the morning - very accommodating. Jenny, the tech who is there early when I arrive, always greets us, and takes my chinchilla, with a smile. We could not recommend a better place to take care of our pet!!!

Animal Hospital of Sussex County has been taking care of our labs for 20 years. Dr. Spinks and his associates have fixed a broken bone, reconstructed torn ACLs, treated just about every other problem a dog could have, and been with us at the end of their lives with great skill and compassion. I am extremely grateful to Dr. Spinks for saving my cat's life. He got bitten by a wild animal in my backyard and it turned into a very severe life threatening abscess. My vet only had two week antibiotic shots and the infection had spread when I finally found Dr. Spinks. He operated, drained it and aggressively treated my cat until the bacteria was eliminated and today my cat is fine.
