REVIEWS OF VCA North Portland Veterinary Hospital IN Oregon

I have been seeing Dr. Warner since moving to Portland in 2013, and wish I could take her with me as I move away this month. She was referred to me by friends, and I could never thank them enough. Dr. Warner is one of the best humans I have ever met. Have you ever wished that your dog was immortal? That is how I feel about her. I cried as I had to say goodbye to her this week, and thanked her again for how kind she was to me when my 17 year old dog passed in 2016, and for how great of a resource she has been for my puppy in 2018. I can only hope she is still practicing when I move back to Portland.

Michele Stange

Dr. Long is the best! The staff is friendly and professional. Clean facilities. Top notch pet care.

bobbo103 marquette

Maybe one of the more expensive animal hospitals in North Portland, but first rate facility. We have brought our animals here for years (before it was bought up by VCA).

Melandria

The best staff, prices, and vet clinic in Portland. Take your pets here, you'll be glad you did.

Ross Fisher

Wonderful caring staff.

Dr Mallov was amazing for five years with my elderly cat that had many health issues. Dr Mallov took soo many phone calls because my cat hated going in to the vet (I even asked once if I could pay for a phone consult... Because I called that much)... He always said not to worry about it... The whole staff always said the same (I called a lot)... Recently my cat passed

Very nice and accommodating staff. I've used their services twice when my mobile vet was not available...both times were five star service. Highly recommended.

I called today to see if I could get my dog his rabies vaccine booster and was told he is due for a wellness exam. He was just seen in June this year (6 months and 3 days ago to be exact). I asked how often he is required to get these wellness exams and the receptionist told me annually. I was like “ great, he was just seen in June so he’s not due for a while still” and the receptionist said he actually still needs to be seen because they can’t administer vaccines if the pet has not been seen within 6 months. “So you’re telling me I’m 2 days late?” I say. “Well, it’s actually more like 7 months.” “Um, June to December? Okay, I’ll just take him to his other vet.” “Okay” “Thanks. Bye.” (Yes, he has another vet, but their clinic doesn’t open until 9am and I was trying to get it done) Anyway, moral of the story is that I think that they offer fine vet services. The vet I met and the technicians were all very nice. My dogs are not terrified to go there, which is a good sign! But, it is definitely a money making business (as are all successful businesses) and, unfortunately, a chain vet hospital so the rules are probably pretty rigid.

Robyn Wright

Very complete, comprehensive and compassionate care for your pet.

Jeannie Campbell

They are taking extremely good care of my cat and dogs

Friendly people, some of which have been there for a very long time. We have closer options but we make the trek out to VCA North Portland anyway. Once you find a facility that you trust, that's pretty much it.

Julie Adrianna Olsen

friendly. Fast. Not cheap. But they are the most accommodating, trustworthy and professional

Mike McGee

We've taken our standard poodle here for several years, and they are the best! Kind and courteous, everyone on the staff shows the greatest concern for the animal, and the people. I'd give them 10 stars if I could! YMMV, but we are happy here.

L Kohl-Johnson

They are amazing! Saw my dog on an emergent call in. The staff is wonderful! If I could give more than 5 stars I would.

Meghan Lewis

We've taken our kitties to VCA for about 7 years now. They are the most compassionate, welcoming, and wonderful group of vets and vet techs I have ever met. Even if the news they have to provide is not ideal, they are very good at bedside manner and giving you the options that are available. They truly care about the humans and the pets' lives! We live closer to another vet hospital, but will always choose VCA any day because we know our beloved furry family members will get the best care there.

I spent over 2 grand on my 3 animals here only to be told that they cannot see my cat, because he's mean. They offered a sedation plan which I followed through with only to be told that he would need extra sedation, incurring an extra cost. When I spoke to their "office manager" they seemed less than sympathetic to my situation, and seemed VERY happy to let my business leave. I have never spent so much money for such below-par customer service, and didn't even know it was legal to turn an asthmatic animal away. For shame.

Megan Madsen

Genuinely caring staff. They take time and don’t act rushed like most vet clinics. Very friendly and personable. Take the time to explain everything to you and give you options. My dog actually gets excited to go here. They really seem to care about their customers and pets. I’m always able to get in at the last minute. The vet personally called me to check in too after a visit.

I've been going here, initially through a recommendation, and couldn't be happier.

Zackariah Sloane

Took my cat that had the sniffles in really early in the morning. They treated him well and didn't give me an expensive run around like Banfield has. I'll definitely be a repeat customer.

Diane Van Gorder

Great vet. Dr. Warner has been my vet for 15+ years. Vet techs do a great job with my doggies when I don't need the services of Dr. Warner

Sean Higgins

Nice people to deal with death of dog. 2 months later with another dog: Try getting any compassion when you need to take your dog in. I've been going there for 15 years, and now that they are VCA, NO COMPASSION.(at least the people that answer the phone) They just refer you to another vet. It's like they can't be bothered with urgent situations. Not a Hospital at all, just a vet. If you have an urgent situation, don't bother!

Nick Hansen

The first vet that cared more about my best friend than money. She is doing so well!

Christian Moore

Daniel Sanchez

Always friendly and helpful. From the moment I walk in to the moment I walk out, I know that my pet will be getting the best possible care. Would recommend for sure.

Kitty Santiago

They are pricier than some other vets around, but their service dog discount makes it affordable for us. And I know that my certified service dog is getting the best quality care she can get. This vet came highly recommended by the organization who provided my dog, and I've never been disappointed.

Loken Montague

Excellent service, people and Animalet friendly and they have cared for all my animals in the past 20 years.

Holly Ashkannejhad

The best vet clinic in Portland, hands down. I have twice taken dogs that were misdiagnosed elsewhere to North Portland Vet Hospital for the correct diagnosis. The vets here take their time with your pet, explain everything thoroughly to you, and in general, don't treat you like an idiot. Not all doctors are good, and not all vets are good, but every single veterinarian I've had at NPVH has been awesome. I've decided to drive up here from SE Portland after checking out numerous other vets in my neighborhood with poor results. I can't say enough nice things about this office.

Bjorn Freeman-Benson

It's the little things that make North Portland Vet better than the other vets we've been to over the years: hours that fit our schedule: before work, after work, even the weekends; doctors (Dr. Warner!) who are never in a hurry and who have always reviewed their notes before coming in the room so you feel like your cat is the ONLY cat they ever see; front staff who are always smiling and always refer to the cats by name; doors that are easy to open even with your hands full of cat carrier; ... It's those little things that they've obviously put thought into that make the whole organization simply the best vets we've ever frequented.

Nicole Paul

Very sweet and helpful with my cats and they were unbelievably kind when I had to put down my kitty several years ago. Pricing has always been reasonable too, so that helps.

Chris Condray

I have a Saint Bernard who is critical. I brought her top Vancouver 8 weeks ago,and ZERO attention was given to her swelled up paws. She was diagnosed with an Auto Immune issue similar to Reumatoid Arthritis, that will possibly end her life. She couldnt even stand without help on Saturday, but they were "booked up". Since then,a more experienced Vet,has taken over, and wanted to partner with another Vet,to get some IV fluids today. I told your receptionist my dog was critical. She offered me an Appt on Friday. You are ALL about Vaccines and maintenence, but patient care seems hardly important. You'll never see another dime out of this family. I've sent a similar email to both VCA Vancouver, and your Corporate office. How dare you treat (not treat) my sick dog. Friday, may not arrive for Cheyenne. What part of CRITICAL did you guys not get? Idiots!

Rebekah Bassel

I've been bringing my dogs here for four years and have received great care from the veterinarians and technicians. They're genuine compassion and understanding is why I give them four stars. The front staff, on the other hand, isn't particularly welcoming or friendly, and remind me of having to go to the DMV. Good thing they have good doctors.

David Bookman

My heros, when it comes to caring for pets.

Stacie Jolly

Highly recommend! This vet has very attentive, knowledgeable and animal loving staff and veterinarians.

David Schuck

They were busy and yet still showed genuine concern.

Updated review: I've seen a lot of changes here and haven't made a good connection with any of the newer vets. It seems when I find one I like they move on. This might come with the territory of being bought by VCA. I still think they have state of the art equipment and well trained vets but I've had mixed reactions to the advice, diagnostics, and bedside manner of some of the vets. I've also learned that if you make an appointment in the afternoon you going to have to wait a long time to be seen as they don't seem to have enough staff to deal with urgent situations and so appointments get pushed back. This has happened to me multiple times and now I know that I just have to get in as early as possible so the vets are harried and rushed and I don't have to wait to be seen way past my appointment time. My review from 4 years ago: Excellent care and a good prices. Some of the best vets and techs I have experienced and I've seen a lot.

Thomas Ekstrand

I am so glad we found VCA North Portland Veterinary Hospital. The care is top notch, the staff is friendly and pet loving, and their prices are reasonable. I don't have to wait on hold forever to book an appointment. They don't make you feel like a bad pet owner if your cat gets into a fight or you can't afford to get their teeth cleaned right now. The doctors present treatment options and work with you to give the best possible care for your pet, given their health and your situation. I don't dread taking my pets there, like I have with other vets. The staff and doctors there understand that our pets our part of our family and treat them with respect and consideration. When I brought in our elderly cat, who was ill and very stressed, the staff brought over a blanket sprayed with Feliway to help reduce her stress while we waited to see a doctor. If you have had a bad experience at another vet, considering trying VCA North Portland Veterinary Hospital. They make pet health care manageable.

Melissa Mooney

My dog just got attacked and I immediately brought her to the VCA, which was miraculously open on a Sunday. They only had one doctor in and were fully booked for the day but still took her to get checked out right away. Dr. Mallov was able to examine and staple up her wounds, even taking the time to come out multiple times and talk with us about the situation. I am so thankful I chose VCA when I first moved here and they were available for me when I needed them most. I thank all the staff who were so caring to me in such a vulnerable situation, ESPECIALLY Dr. Mallov..I want to give you a friggin humanitarian award.

My dog stepped on a broken bottle at the overlook dog area at the end of Ainsworth St. He was bleeding a lot, I rushed him to the vet just before they closed. Dr Yeitz stayed late to stitch him up, she found a cut artery and tendon on his foot. I have taken him back for a few follow up appointments since, and she has been very nice and helpful. If you see broken glass please do a good deed and pick it up for the next person or dog who walks by.

I'm here to change my review. There was an issue with our puppy being misdiagnosed. The clinic reached out to me, and the medical director and manager worked with us to make it right. They went above and beyond our expectations. Everyone we met at the clinic was very kind and treated our fur babies as if they were their own. I have never encountered a vet staff as caring as they are. That was the case from our first visit. Anyway, I had to come back and say how very grateful we are. Thank you for taking care of our sick boy, and us as well.

Everyone here is knowledgeable and helpful. It's usually stressful for me to bring my sick or anxious dog who hates slippery floors, but everyone there always makes me feel at ease right away and they really do what they can to make the experience easy for everyone. I've met quite a few of the staff and doctors there and it's always a great experience. They also have treats and bland food available to buy when my dog needs it. It's great having this place nearby. There's usually a few parking spaces available, but there is also street parking.

We've been bringing our dog here regularly for about a year. Compared to other vets we've been to in Portland I've found VCA N Portland to be very friendly and knowledgeable. I was particularly concerned about having our dog under general anesthesia for teeth cleaning and they were very helpful in answering all my questions and ensuring that someone would be dedicated to monitoring his vitals while he was under. They take the time to get the full picture and recommend different treatments depending on your budget. I always feel like my furry baby is in good hands here!

My parents have taken their animals to this clinic for years, especially before it was bought out by VCA. Their original vet retired, and decided to let VCA buy the practice. VCA is a decent company, but their prices are a bit spendy, and they don't allow the staff to make as many personal calls when it comes to pricing and treatments, as I feel they were able to make before VCA bought them out. I was only there for blood work, but when I mentioned that the cat that I brought in had some mats in its hair, they took it upon themselves to chop them out, without really getting my consent, and they took her all the way down to her skin in several spots, which makes it now look like she was attacked by a lawnmower. I was not terribly happy with that. So do keep in mind, if you have a cat with hairball issues, or should I say mats in their fur, take them to a groomer, it will be cheaper, and they will know what they're doing, and not make a botched mess out of what was once a beautiful coat on your pet. My parents go to this Clinic, but I don't know that I would, if I have other choices. They were doing this for me as a favor, because they felt their vet was knowledgeable, and she probably is, but the people and technicians that we dealt with yesterday, left a lot to be desired in my opinion. Always choose your pet care cautiously, the amount of expertise, compassion, and care for your pets does vary greatly from practice to practice, almost to the point where I think it's horrific that there is not a better regulatory Institution for the welfare and medical needs of our pets. Perhaps that's something the world needs to think about, I think it would do wonders if there was somebody making these people adhere to specific care and quality standards. Just my thoughts. Cheers! UPDATE: I have upgraded this practice, from three stars with the previous review, to five stars, with an experience I had there yesterday. My parents' beloved pet dog passed away, after 17 years of wonderful care, from my loving parents, and the vets at North Portland Veterinary Clinic, or North Portland VCA as it is known now.. Not only did the Vets at North Portland help my parents in the past, but so did some of the vets and cardiologist at Dove Lewis Clinic, as well. I had picked up the dog from the breeder 17 years ago, after my parents had seen the dog and thought it over, and decided to adopt her. I drove her to their house, and she remembered the sound of my car for the rest of her life. She always knew when I was coming down the street. Yesterday, I was with my parents, when we took her to the vet for the last time, after she had passed away at my parents home. They had a quiet room or comfort room in the back of the clinic, and they let us say our final goodbyes to our precious little girl, and even had a vet come in to confirm that she indeed had expired. When we were leaving, and I thanked them for all of their help, the lady at the front desk that had been helping us all along, Andrea, told me if there was anything our family needed, to give them a call, she also said, "if you need anything, don't hesitate to call us as well". Since I'm not their client, and I'm not a regular customer there, that really touched me deeply, and the compassion that this lady showed us yesterday, and all of her care and concern, meant the world to both myself and to my parents. So although I was critical of them in my previous review, I have to give credit where credit is due, and I couldn't have been more impressed and appreciative of the way we were treated, and the compassion and care that was shown, up to and including the point of Andrea coming out from behind the counter, and giving both myself, and my mother, a hug before we left the facility. This VCA seems to be doing better as time passes, and I hope that that uphill swing and even better service and care continues. I could not have been more impressed than I was yesterday. Thank you to everyone who helped us at North Portland VCA, and especially to Andrea. Cheers

They are very loving and caring. Best place to go when your fur babies.

This place is dangerous! Get a second opinion if they advise you to euthanize your pet! Brought our cat in after all night at Dove Lewis Emergency. Cat had tried to have a bowel movement, then collapsed. Dove Lewis gave Kitty an enema. VCA did bloodwork and told us to Euthanize our cat within 48 hours due to "renal failure". They were wrong. After a second opinion from our regular vet, we are treating our kitty daily with insulin for his misdiagnosed (by VCA) diabetes, and FOUR WEEKS LATER, HE IS DOING GREAT! He is playing, cuddling, adventuring outside, gaining weight, eliminating normally, and generally acting like a happy, energetic older kitty. I was not ready to see my guy go if he could still have a happy life, but VOC made it sound like I would be torturing him and would have to hospitalize him to keep him alive. They also tried to up-sell me unnecessary tests, which wouldn't have helped with his treatment. This place is corporate vet medicine at it's worst. It's like, would you like $145 fries with that? Watch out if you HAVE to go here. I will keep my trustworthy cat clinic in Beaverton.

Raymond Larson

Excellent vets. Great staff and techs. Exceptional care for many years. Old dogs and cats are really well cared for and they like the people too! Have had many pets cared for by this clinic, they all had long health lives.

I cannot say enough good things about this place. Everything from their ethos of pet care, to how the doctors approach both the animal and the owner as a unit, to their great energetic staff who are exactly the pet-centric minded people you want treating your pet. We too, have used this place for our pets. our cat Kiki is 15 yrs old now, and this has been her only vet.we got her fixed and 1st shots and booster shots there. Over the yrs we always used this vet for all her little boo boos in life. This time something changed. Kiki got ear mites, and 1ear was inficted. Vet let the blood out of her infected ear, and gave her some flea poison. The kind u squirt on the back of the neck. This is the different part. He didn't seem concerned with her ears, instead he became a used car salesman. He commented on how Kiki had no fleas. ?. Yes I love my cat and use frontline. He said that stuff doesn't work. ?. Tried to sell me dentle work . Big bucks. Hu. Buy his expensive Frontline. The bill comes and I had stiker shock. Over the yrs the bill is usually around 70 90 bucks. This time 270.00.! Ok I paid it. Go home 5 days later, now both ear are swollen. We where getting ready to return to vet when Kiki ran away and hid. She was gone 5 Days! We thought she had ran off to die. So I called VCA, who just billed me for 270.00 dollars for earmite treatment, that Kiki is in a lot of pain and both ears are swollen.( See I'm in an emergency with a cat in a lot of pain, yeowling.) I just paid 270.00 and the flea stuff the vet used isn't working can he take a look at her. The office worker started talking money.? And she could care less about my cat or me and hung up on me. I know in the past they would no questions just say , oh my God get her down here quick and we'll get that taken care of. What changed? Why is vet so heartless. Hey I paid 270.00 for earmites and YOU didn't get em doc. You lied to me and now you refuse to help Kiki. All you want is more money. Whats the matter with you. Shame your hospital is a

I've been taking my dog here for the past 6 months, and have given them numerous chances to keep me as a paying customer, but I have had enough. This place is just looking to take your money. I originally brought my dog in for a rash and ear problem, was given a bagful of meds and creams, totaling quite a bit of money. The vet could not give me a solid answer on if the antibiotic ear drops were absolutely necessary, or if we should try Benadryl first. I asked many times for clarification, and she couldn't tell me to buy the $45 drops, or not. The rash cleared up in a week. When it was time for my dogs vaccine updates, they insisted she needed to see the vet regarding her previous ear/skin rash, that had obviously cleared up after the first visit several months ago. They let me just schedule a "tech visit", since everything had cleared up. I had an appointment for the tech visit and was seen 45 minutes later, why have an appointment if there is such a long wait? A few months later, my dog is due for another yearly vaccine, and insists she needs to see the vet for an exam regarding her skin/ears, a clearly unnecessary exam fee. If my dog continued to have a rash/ear problem, wouldn't they have followed up with me a week or so after her initial visit, instead of constantly trying to charge me for an exam for my healthy dog? They also tried to charge me for a fecal test, a few weeks after I had already dropped off and paid for one. Not sure if this was a record keeping error, or if they are just trying to charge people for whatever they can. I've heard of vet offices taking advantage of people and charging for unnecessary exams, etc., and I think the VCA does this. I'd be scared to take my dog here in an emergency situation, knowing it would probably cost an arm and a leg. A friend of mine took her dog here for an eye problem, they insisted it was cancer, before doing a biopsy and scheduled a surgery. She was so upset and fearful for her dog. She got a second opinion from another vet, prescribed a steroid cream, and all is well. The VCA scared my friend into thinking her dog HAD cancer and HAD to have an expensive surgery. I would think twice before taking your pet here.

Nathan Keith

The veterinarians and technicians are wonderful and provide excellent care (5 star). The prices however are very high (2 star). Teeth cleaning and removing two teeth was almost $1000. That's more than my dentist charges for me.

Helen Ferguson

Been going here since 1998, 4 dogs past on, now have 3. I like VCA it's a hospital as well. All in one place. I like that new veterinarians get started here. Big staff never met any I didnt trust. They work together.

Matt Hensel

Staff was incredibly helpful and supportive helping my dog and I through an unexpected emergency. It should be noted, however, this is not an emergency services center.

Olivia S

A plethora of bad experiences from this animal hospital. Most recently took my dog in and was not given proper antibiotics. Ended up at Dove Lewis a week later with a sever infection. This last bad experience was the final straw. I will never go back.

All the docs are great, staff is super helpful and kind. Or two dogs don't even mind going (most of the time.)

I was referred to VCA North Portland for our two cats after experiencing troublesome care at another clinic. This team is the kindest, most patient and skilled group I've ever dealt with and I've had cats most of my life. Dr. Warner in particular is just wonderful with our skittish cat and it's clear she loves her job. All the vets and techs take their time to chat with you and I've never felt rushed or like I have anything but their full attention. The prices are decent and the care and advice we've received has been spot-on.

Sheri Cash

We have since moved out of N Portland and continue to come to (N Portland Veterinary Hospital) aka, VCA Animal Hospital. We have been bringing our fur babies, 3 to date, here for 16 years and the care they get from their "Puppyatrician," Dr Kandace Henry is amazing! She treats them like they are her own, giving them the best of care and an enormous amount of love and treats! I would highly recommend VCA to anyone looking for great care and compassion for their most precious posession ... the Bebe's! But be prepared to pay EXTREMELY high prices and for this reason alone we had to leave them finding a new veterinary office for our girls.

Mae Muun

Honestly, we put our dog to rest at this Vet Hospital a few months ago and it was one of the most genuine and considerate experiences I have had in Portland. I know the Veterinarian introduced himself (converse shoes) and so did the vet assistant/tech (woman with nice pixy hair) but I cannot remember their names because I was so emotional. We went in on a weekend and it was not more expensive to put our dog to sleep than a weekday (sounds strange but this is common). There is a separate room for folks in this circumstance which felt incredibly thoughtful and meaningful. The procedure was explained thoroughly and effectively and I did not leave feeling confused or financially burdened. We received the ashes quickly afterward in a beautiful wooden box with a poem on top which made me cry out of happiness and thankfulness when I read it in the car. I want to thank everyone at this vet hospital for allowing the process of letting our loved one go to be a meaningful experience alongside professional and administratively easy. Thank you!

I have been going to VCA N. Portland Vet for over 20 years. All of their vets are good, but Dr. Cheryl Warner is the absolute best vet ever. She genuinely cares about you and your pet. Another wonderful part of this vet office is they understand that sometimes money is limited, but we still want to provide good care for our pets. They give suggestions for less expensive methods of treatment. The office staff is also always caring and kind. I can't say enough about how much I trust this Veterinary office to give my pets skilled and loving care.

Cares only for $$$ not for pets! Brought in a healthy cat for a Rabies vaccine within a day of visiting VCA North Portland my cat was severely ill with loss of appetite and diarrhea. I called several times and the staff was beyond rude. They offered no help other than suggesting 24 hour emergency care even though my pet's illness seemed to be related to his visit to VCA. They also quoted $1800 to clean my cat's teeth even after I explained that I have limited income! Unbelievable!

This hospital, and specifically Dr. Cheryl Warner, saved my dog's life some 13 years ago. Cita's liver was in very bad shape. We don't know why this was happening. Dr Warner detected the problem immediately. With her outstanding medical attention, and a very frightening few months, Cita, at age 5, was back on the mend. Her liver fully recovered and she was taken off the meds about 5 or 6 years later. Cita lived to be 15. It was truly a miracle. Her liver was almost dead. Cita was a red & blue heeler mix and a fierce frisbee dog. I still have photos of her everywhere and her collar accompanies me while I drive as it hangs on the safety handle on the door of my truck. She passed in 2012. Thanks to Dr Warner and the amazing team at North Portland Animal Hospital.

Great doctors and caring staff

Before going I asked the price for specifically what I wanted. I was charged more than twice what I was told.

I generally like the care that I get here very much. Be vigilant about asking the cost as you go along. Consider getting medications elsewhere. Recently, they prescribed anabiotics for my dog’s UTI, and didn’t mention that they cost $110 until I had pulled my card out to pay. This is not the first time I left the exam room feeling good about the care, and then left the building feeling bad because of the sticker shock. It is hard to feel like they are a complete partner with me in my pet’s care because of the cost. I keep going back because of the doctors but I regularly consider going (and at times have gone) elsewhere because of the high cost.
