Very slow but great staff and not a lot of dogs

This saddens me to write this as before I have always had a wonder time at Safe Harbor until recently. I called in because my dog has a swollen sweat gland filled with water. I was in a few months prior and was told by the vet this is common and a easy fix with a poke to drain the water and advised me to call in if it happens again. Well I noticed it was back and so I called and spoke with the receptionist. I told her I may need to talk to the vet, but maybe she could help me. I explained what was going on regarding last appointment to now and also that due to the government shut down my Husband, who is active duty coast guard, was not getting paid and money was tight. I asked if there was a way to help my dog without doing a full exam or maybe an easy at home solution I could try. I by no means was looking for a free service, but do to it being the same thing and taking less then 5 min fix if maybe there was a different price for the service. She was insensitive, rude and insinuated that I was not putting my dogs heath at priority.... as well as reminded me that a $45 fee wasn't much... sadly do to lack of income do to government shut down $45 is gas and grocery money and I was calling in because I was looking for alternative ways to take care of my dog in already an embarrassing and frustrating situation..... I am astonished and would not recommend any of my fellow Coast Guard family or personal family and friends there if this is how there sectary is going to answer there phones and make insensitive remarks and comments.

Our dog got very sick while vacationing in Cannon Beach. Safe Harbor's receptionist was a patient jewel with my concerns. We got an appointment the next day. Dr. Haase was wonderful! She calmed our fears and was very professional and thorough with her assessment and treatment of our dog. Am happy to report, Penny is on the mend.

A pet owners worst nightmare, when your pet gets sick while on vacation. My dog Sadie had a bad case of diarrhea and at 3 in the morning started vomiting a lot.Started my search for Vet early in the morning and was directed here by another place.. Arrived just as they opened and was able to get an appointment couple hours later. After testing they did find what was wrong and gave me the prescriptions to treat it. Sadie did feel better later in the day. Dr. Haase and staff (including comfort cat,Sherman?)were very helpful. THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!!

We have been going to this vet for nearly 3 years now they have always been helpful and willing to listen when I have a particular way I want to have something done.

I brought my normally healthy and rambunctious labrador into Safe Harbor on 7/12/17. However, on that day, she was lethargic, couldn't move her back legs, and was displaying neurological symptoms as if she'd had a stroke. I was beyond worried! Dr. Haase diagnosed her correctly with Salmon poisoning and I'm writing this two days later with a completely healed dog. I could not be more grateful! The prognosis is fatal if left untreated, so I owe Dr. Haase a lot!

My dog loved his new vet. Our appointment was quick and easy and all the staff were super nice.

My Daschund, Puddles, took a bad leap from the bed and hurt it's rear hips so that he couldn't walk. I brought him into Safe Harbor. Stephanie, the receptionist, was loving kindness, and gently took the dog from me, and I left him in the care of Safe Harbor. I couldn't afford their recommendation of taking Puddles to a true Animal Hospital, so they developed a secondary proposal, that included keeping my dog crated (they lent me the crate, which was nice) medication and laser treatments. Puddles in on the mend, still doesn't like the crate though (but I let him out as often as I can.

The vet truly loves all animals. She is very personable. Staff in the office is helpful. Dr. Melanie operated on my dogs knee. His recovery went great and he has not had a problem since the operation. I would highly recommend Dr. Melanie!

Georgetta Smith

The staff is always so courteous and helpful. The doctor also treats my feline boys like they were her own.

John Doe, our big grey tabby, hasn’t been feeling well for a few days. He wasn’t super into his food, was a little lethargic, and losing weight. We got in the same day we called. Dr. Haase took a great history and on physical exam, noted his full bladder. They took some blood and some urine and , sure enough, he’s got a bladder infection. She gave him an antibiotic shot, some pain medication, and some samples of food that is designed for kidney care and to stimulate his appetite. So grateful to know John Doe is on the mend. The doctor, both the assistants, and the receptionist were all sweet, kind, and funny. All in all, a great experience. We’ll be back in two weeks to follow up. Glad to have a great vet in the neighborhood. Thank you Safe Harbor.

Jeff Frane

Wonderful caring staff and a great doc.

This place is fantastic! When my dog had an open wound about the size of a quarter in her side, I was turned away from my own vet, as well as a second location in the area because of capacity issues before calling Safe Harbor. They got me in within 2 hours and I was surprised at how overwhelmingly friendly and affordable they were. Really took the stress out of the situation.

Matthew Palmgren

I am very disappointed in the level of care and professionalism of this vet. Our animals problems were made worse by the "treatment". Dr. Melanie Haas is friendly and appears to care about animals but is extremely scattered and makes a person feel very uneasy about her opinion of what needs to be done.

i went through the most traumatic experience of my life losing my best friend, and you managed to make the experience even worse. We showed up 30 minutes early in the hopes to get help, The vet was there but was about to leave to run an errand, my dog was in more pain than Ive ever seen her in, instead of help we got to sit in an empty animal clinic lobby, with a snooty receptionist, The receptionist told us that if the dog was 40 pounds it would cost $120 for cremation if it was one pound more it would be $180, we got a quote of $60 from the animal shelter, the receptionist told us that she couldn't recommend that to us, we went with the animal shelter which happened to be the nicer people we dealt with that day. The vet came back 10 mins past my appointment, as my dog was either going into shock, or having a seizure, I couldn't tell which one, and the vet thought it was a good time to make small talk and take her time, which my mom had to tell her to just end my dogs pain, and to hurry up. From this awful experience I believe this business has no empathy for animals, It's all about making money to them, the 1st time we went in she was telling us that it was time for my dog to be put down, she had a little bit over a month left with me after that visit, I regret coming back to this clinic. I will spread the word of my experience of my last minutes with my dog, and the lack of help that could've easily been done quickly to reduce her pain. I hope it will result in your lobby to continue to be empty.

Heads up. This a long and thorough review. :) Dr. Melanie Haase is hardworking and very intelligent. It was a delight to watch her work during each appt. She truly has compassion for every pet and shows understanding and patience to every owner giving them information and further education when desired. And, if Dr. Haase has a moment to connect beyond the appt she will. The Dr tries to keep up to speed with the latest research and new ideas. Her mind works very fast and she is great at looking at every clue to solve your pet's ailment(s). This animal hospital has many of the latest and greatest technologies. While working with Dr Haase, I learned about laboratory work, dentals, surgeries, x-rays, cold laser therapy, the best ways to handle fleas, how to listen and take into account every symptom and remedy before arriving at a final diagnoses. No "band-aid treatments," willy-nilly prescriptions, or on-demand euthanizing at Safe Harbor. The clinic is sanitary, stocked well, some labs can be done in-house, and the Doctor and her hospital follows regulation/protocol. While there can be a rush of patients at Safe Harbor, Dr Haase, and staff, sometimes have to push to move along. But more often, they will take their time making sure to treat each four legged friend the best they can. So, be sure to make time for your appt. A procedure that you may think is simple, or should happen quickly, has a process. Testimonies: 1) I've seen an instance where someone brought in their pet who was in too much pain for the owner to bear. They thought their pet was done for and instead Dr Haase had a possible remedy before deciding to euthanize. 2) She took Tigger in as one of the hospital cats. On her own time and dollar she treated him for anxiety and bladder and stomach troubles for 4 years, before I met him, fell in love, and adopted him. I continue to use her recommendations although we've moved away. 3) Finally, I remember when we had a feline friend come in who was not able to breath well. I was the vet assistant that day. While taking him to the back for x-rays I held him in such a way that he reacted by deeply scratching me and had a hissing-and-scratching-fit at me. Dr Haase heard the commotion and said to me, "Oh no! Are you ok?" and then, "Have compassion! He can't breath well, and the way he was being held probably stopped his breathing and scared him." That part... "Have compassion!" That stays with me as such a teaching moment and a viewing of her true intentions and integrity as a Dr of animals.

Love the staff and the loving service they provided to my animals at this veterinary clinic. This place is clean and sanitary. Dr. Haase is easy to talk to and explains things in an easy to understand way. I've tried 2 other clinics in the North Coast area and am going to use this one from here on.

Ron McKeehen

One of the most caring vet’s our Chesapeake Bay Retriever has been to. If we lived here this would undoubtedly be our veterinarian. Very reasonably priced also. Thanks Dr Haase and her vet TEC whom I didn’t get her name.

Awesome love this vet. People are great here nice place

Safe Harbor Animal Hospital... well let’s start of with standoff rude customer service accompanied with The lack of empathy One bringing our pet into their facility. They were more worried about having an appointment and if you didn’t it was gonna cost you an extra $150. If you are going to consider yourself a hospital you should be able to take walk-ins because things happen like accidents. If you only take appointment then you might as will take the word “hospital” off your company name and call it safe harbor veterinarian clinic. Once they realize we weren’t really appreciative of their attitude they tried to downplay the injury of our pet saying everything will be OK and try to go to some of these other veterinarians around the area as they might have an opening.

Where do I start? First off I'm sorry it took me so long to write this! This Animal hospital is hands down the best in the area. My cat Red suddenly became incredibly ill; naturally I wanted to do everything in my power to help him. I brought him to these wonderful ladies and was understandably frazzled and intensely worried. They immediately picked up that I was worried and helped calm me down with assurance that they would do everything they could to help. Boy did they come through! Not only did they do everything they could, they genuinely cared. They called and checked up on him throughout the two week period of his ailment, they would comfort him and make sure he was cared for when I had to leave him for the day and you could tell that they wanted the best for him. I could go on and on about these incredible ladies and their establishment. Highly recommended and will only be going here for the rest of my veterinarian needs. Thank you! Red is feeling great and has his original spunk back!

It takes a special kind of person to handle a cranky ball of claws and teeth and be able to figure out (and fix!) what's wrong. Dr. Haase and staff's skills and compassion let me know my fuzzies were in good hands from the start. Big facility is clean and bright, and they have a nice large waiting room with friendly lobby cats to greet you. Hands down the best vet in the area!
