REVIEWS OF Pet Samaritan Clinic IN Oregon

I can not praise Pet Samaritan Clinic enough! For six years, my dog was a patient at a high end veterinary clinic on Powell and I was always impressed by how professional they were. When my dog needed an expensive procedure, I decided to get a second opinion from Pet Samaritan clinic and they were so good with my dog that I chose to make them my primary veterinarian. And the procedure cost about 40% less than I was previously quoted at my other vet. My dog is a rescue with a history of abuse, and he can become very nervous and agitated when going to the vet. On our first visit, the staff were very patient with my dog, and the veterinary technician allowed him to sniff all of the instruments before she used them. She used a calm voice and demeanor to put him at ease. I couldn't believe how well he did during his visit, and I will never take him back to his old vet. Dr. Klau was extremely patient and kind with my dog and kept me informed via phone throughout his surgical procedure. Pet Samaritan Clinic also offers an amazing deal on a pet health care plan, which reduced my dog's surgical costs by about 25%. The staff is thorough, patient, and so nice. Thank you Pet Samaritan Clinic!

The best recommendation we can give comes directly from our dog, Tasha. If we walk past the clinic she sits down in front of the door and won't move until we go in and she says hello to everyone and gets a treat. We human's feel she's always gotten excellent care from friendly and caring people.

Worst visited ever never in my life for me having my pets have I ever been so disrespected the Vet Kennedy was so rude to us told us that our cat was really sick by only touching her and looking at her after I told her I had to go and we were going to look for other resources because I couldn't afford the x-rays that were $300 she decided to call the humane society and make up lies my gf told her she was going to go to work she got really upset and started telling me that my cat was going to die by midnight if I did not take her somewhere where they had surgeons and even asked me if I wanted to utilize my kitty!! And even threaten us by saying the she will call animal service on us in front of her clients after leaving the place and going to Hannah the pet society they told us that my kitten was 100% healthy even called pet Samaritan to make sure they have a second opinion the veterinarian at Hannah had X-rays done on the cat there is nothing wrong with my cat I would never return to Pet Samaritan clinic and I will make sure that everybody knows how rude and disrespectful they were with us

This is the same review I tried to leave on Yelp but it doesn't show up. Please consider this review seriously. I'm sure this place is probably great with dogs and cats, but I would NEVER TAKE A BIRD HERE again. I can't anyway because now he is DEAD. I had a budgie with a lice problem and I was given Ivermectin to treat it. Pretty standard. I used to be a tech myself so I am pretty familiar with these kinds of things. He clearly had an overdose the day after I administered his second dose. He could not stand and was completely out of it. I brought him in immediately for emergency medical attention. They put him on oxygen and gave him sugar and somewhat stabilized him. Dr.Ewing would not openly admit that it was a complication from the medication although she had no other explanation. I continued to nurse him back to health over the next two days and he slowly became his rambunctious little self again. The next morning I found him face first at the bottom of his cage barely alive. He died in my hands about ten minutes later. This should have been a very simple treatment for a very common problem that turned fatal. Check your dosages. Birds are fragile. If this happened to a person there would be a medical malpractice suit. If I knew of any proper legal action I would take it. If you don't know how to treat birds don't accept them as clients.

Dr. Ewing and the staff at Pet Samaritan are AMAZING. Both of our Corgis and all of our Rabbits are seen by Dr. Ewing. We have one rabbit who has had a lot of medical problems since she was a kit and Dr. Ewing along with the wonderful staff have taken such great care of her. She went above and beyond to make sure Sally made a full recovery after a particularly bad illness. I have recommended several friends here and will continue to do so!

I took my guinea pig and the vet could not have been any less compassionate or caring. The receptionist was super rude.

I love pet sam! We have taken our 10 year old wild pup there since he was 6 weeks old. There is no other clinic we trust to trim his nails (hes a bit wild) test any strange lumps and bumps and provide him with love and good care when he arrives. 10/10 stars from us and Leo

Rob Sauer

Very caring for my dog. They are always trying to help with her anxiety. Budget conscious. They could improve their confidence with diagnosing issues. As a first time dog owner, I would appreciate more direct guidance on steps I should take. I recommend Pet Samaritan.

My 15 year old dog had an exam and X-rays done that showed two tumors. The Vet took a Lymph Node Biopsy for $90. Now they will not give us the results unless we pay an additional $200! What kind of business practice is that!? Never did they say there would be additional fees! Now we have no idea what stage the cancer is in our beautiful fur baby unless we pay $200 more dollars. The bill was over $500! We know our dog has little time left with us. We want to help her pass peacefully with little to no suffering. We do not have $200 to pay for the results we thought we already paid for! We are beyond disappointed with the way they handle this business. Something should have been said about additional fees before we left! Bad Business practice! Hidden fees!! I will make sure every pet owner I know stays away from this clinic!!! They are not honest!! They should be ashamed of themselves for taking advantage of people this way!

Karen Bronson

Warm, professional, and open care for your pet families. Everyone here has been great about explaining the care, options, prices, and whether or not we really need to go for this vaccine or that procedure.

Had to put down my pet here and the vet & vet-tech were very compassionate and understanding, however the employee at the front was not and was joking with us when we were paying for the euthanasia. Left a bad taste in our mouths at the end of a very hard visit.

Pet Samaritan has been so great! Our older dog recently started having some medical issues. We were able to get her in right away, diagnosed and medicine in hand by the end of our visit! Excellent follow up as well over the next week to make sure she was doing well on the medication, feeling better etc. All staff were very friendly and answered all questions we had. Pet Sam isn't anywhere near where we live but I am happy to drive the 45+ minutes to have such great care for my pets! I would recommend Pet Sam to anyone looking for great care for their furry loved ones!

Emily Jespersen

My favorite vet ever! Everyone is so friendly, so helpful and willing to work with my budget. They provide lots of info without ever pressuring me into more services.

We are happy with the treatment our 14 year old dog gets at Pet Samaritan. The doctors are smart and the desk staff are pleasant. We've been coming here for 5 years and are not considering anywhere else.

Very good Clinic for care of your pets. They maintain comprehensive animal records over many years, and this has been my go-to place for my cat's for the last 17 plus years. Both the support staff and the veterinarians are very kind and caring. They provide a wide range of prescription and over-the-counter medications and other supplies necessary for many stages of the animals lives, and medical and other kinds of care. I'm very happy with the service I have received over the years. They are always careful to explain the cost of the different kinds of services provided, and to Taylor and adjust what is provided to the budget that you either can't afford or are willing to spend on your animals, and to adjust treatments accordingly. I strongly recommend this Clinic for care of your animals for either short-term or long-term care needs.

Fern Walker

Best vet clinic I have ever had! Always quick to get you on the schedule and in the door. They do not pressure you to do unnecessary vaccines or tests. Very compassionate and honest staff.

Tana Darko

I've taken my rabbit here twice - once to get spayed and once because she ate a poisonous plant. Both times Dr Davies was gentle, highly knowledgeable, and great with our rabbit. When she got sick they got her in ASAP. Because rabbits are exotic it's not easy to find a vet who will treat them and understand all of their special needs. We just got a second buns from the humane society - they are participants in the free health examination that OHS with their pets and I trust that she'll be in great hands with this team. :)

Sarah Stanze

I've always had a positive experience here! They helped diagnose my dog with a chronic illness ~10 years ago and since then we wouldn't dream of going anywhere else! (Yes even now after we've moved out closer to Greshsm) I trust them with my animals because you can feel the love when you walk in. They absolutely care and do everything they can to help. I highly recommend them to anyone still searching for the right fit for their fur babies!

I have never had a bad experience here. Every time I go in, I'm greeted with a smiling face and a treat for my dog. They've also been really kind about payment plans, since vet bills can add up. Shelley (the front desk assistant) is absolutely wonderful. I've had so many pets over the years and have never had a veterinary team this caring and compassionate.

Marie Schultz

Always great care for our pet Corgi's. We recently had to bring our sick pup, Nellie, in for care, Dr. Ewing, without hesitation, gave the plan of action to get Nellie feeling better and within 24 hrs, she was. Dr. Ewing cares for her patients as if they were her own. Can't ask for anything more than that from your pet's doctor. The rest of the staff have been nothing, but great too. Thank you Pet Samaritan!

One of our clients left their dog with us (left the state) and we learned he was unvaccinated and undertreated in so many ways it was beyond sad. Beautiful boy, expensive breed. We took him to these guys and they got him healthy and perky and then we were able to find him his forever home with a duck hunter...great ending for a beautiful boy.

My partner’s initial experience with Pet Samaritan was great- Dr. Erickson was very personable, kind, and direct when conducting a wellness exam for our dog. However, our other experiences there were quite negative. Both consisted of a top-down approach, insisting that the worst was happening/could happen and then being pressured into conducting extensive tests. Only once the most expensive option was conducted was it suggested that we try the easiest and cheapest solution to help our dog’s symptoms. I will say that the first time this happened, our concerns over this method were heard and addressed. Our most recent visit, however, resulted in the same frustrating approach. After I mentioned a small, new growth in my dog’s toe, I was immediately bombarded with a to-do list of lung xrays, additional blood panels (though I just got the extensive one upon their vets referral two months prior), anesthesia, biopsies, and toe amputation. I had to repeatedly ask what I could do for the immediate future to prevent infection and provide comfort for my dog. While reception was always welcoming and I do think that the staff does genuinely care about animals, I do not care for their approach or the interactions I had with them during my visits.

Wonderful vets, they fit us in on very short notice, and gave us honest answers and took good care of our girl.

Tina McNerthney

Our 10-year old cat has been going to Pet Samaritan for years and our 9-month puppy Baxter has been going there since we got him at 8 weeks. Dr. Ewing is our vet and she is thorough and thoughtful. We had to sign a spay/neuter contract for our puppy and she was willing to go to bat to get the contract deadline extended to 1-year for the health of our puppy given that recent research findings indicate later s/n results in better development and lower incidence of certain cancers. Luckily, the breeder extended the deadline upon request, but I was comforted knowing that Dr. Ewing feels so strongly about doing the right thing for our pets that she would call or write to advocate for us. The downside of Pet Samaritan Clinic is definitely parking - especially with recent new development in the area, but I've never had a huge problem. The care is great, the prices are affordable and they have a great insurance plan you can purchase for pets on an annual basis to significantly reduce costs. The insurance does not preclude pets with pre-existing conditions and has saved us lots of money on our cat's treatment. Highly recommended.

I found a stray kitten running through traffic this week and brought him immediately to this clinic. They where able to help me get him connected to the proper services, and gave him food, water and a carrying case so I could bring him home safely. The front desk staff where extremely helpful and kind and it shows how caring and compassionate they are for animals. I would make them my regular vet if I lived closer, but I can't reccomend them enough for all your pets veterinary needs.

Margaret from Portland

I have been taking pets (cats and dogs) here since 1998, and have never had a bad experience. Some of my pets have had serious illnesses (including a cat with FIV and severe skin problems, a dog with chronic eye ulcers and spinal cord problems, and a dog with liver disease). The veterinarians and support staff have always been extremely competent, conscientious, and kind. They often go the extra mile doing things for which they are not reimbursed--for example, making lengthy follow-up phone calls to check on a pet, and consulting directly with veterinary sub-specialists--because they care. I have no complaints and recommend them highly.

Pet Samaritan has cared for our pets for so many years. From caring for our rats, to now our 6 year old dog, they have always been caring and professional. We feel we are in the best hands at Pet Samaritan.

Bitchin pet care. Great place to get your cat fixed. Kinda spend though.

Catherine smith

Have been our family vet for 20 years, can't recommend highly enough. When 2 days at emergency vet couldn't get our cats fever down, Dr. Erickson did in 4 hours. Very caring, and helped us learn how to do stuff ourselves.

Paul k

Awesome staff, awesome place!

My dog Kofi is well cared for here. The staff is very kind and very helpful. Kofi loves her vet doctor, Dr. Larson as well. My dog is 16 years old and I think I have received good care and important information on aging dogs. I also qualify for a health care plan each year which I take advantage of. I think it is helpful to get discounts on care. The neighborhood has changed and it is hard to find a parking place but they have a little parking right in front if your dog or cat cannot make the walk from elsewhere. The vets are willing to email you if you have questions.

It is not too difficult to schedule an appointment last minute or get a walk In appointment. The office staff and technicians are nice and good with the animals. The check out process can be slow. Pet Samaritans prices are very high, I was quoted over 400.00 for a next day urgent procedure for my dog but ending being able to get the procedure complete the same day at Dove Lewis for half the cost. I had asked the vet about getting the procedure done at Dove Lewis same day and she said well you can do that if you want, you'll spend way more money going there though. At times I find the supervising veterinarian to be a bit condescending and passive aggressive which is disappointing. It is a small office that gets the job done.

Bret Wonderlick

Just reviewed my bill for euthanizing our rat, for having a huge tumor, at $90. Now knowing that the humane society will do the same procedure for $5, I called to inquire as to how that could be. We took our rat for an examination in December to consider options, including euthanasia. At the time, Dr. Ewing advised Euthanasia as an option and we decided to have the rat put down in February. Apparently, we were charged for another required "exam" to determine if euthanasia was appropriate; even though she had already given that option in December. She requires this if the last exam has been over a month prior. We scheduled the appointment to euthanize the rat, not have an evaluation. We were not going to bring him back home and that was clear. There was no need for another exam. One star for gouging. Consider the humane society.

Tl;dr Pet Samaritan is a disorganized vet where the doctors will try to swindle you and nothing will be communicated. Go somewhere else! Talking to the vets Pet Samaritan is like haggling with used car salespeople. They'll try to upcharge you or sell you services you don't necessarily need and omit information to sway your decision. Some of the vets seem a little worn out on animals and lack empathy, and the receptionists lack inter-office communication skills. To illustrate: we brought our dog to update his shots before we surrendered him to a Humane Society (high anxiety dog living in a tiny home in someone's backyard with no space of his own and lots of triggers around, thanks Portland rent hike). The doctor tried to get us to renew his annual pet insurance (something like $120), telling us without it his vaccines were gonna be full price and insinuating that it would be expensive. Mind you, this is a dog who will be surrendered in a week so the insurance will be meaningless. After some back and forth, I finally spoke with a nurse who said skipping the insurance would be best as the vaccines were only $35 each. Like, why didn't the doctor open with that and instead skirt around the issue and pressure me into an insurance plan. During this same visit, while waiting to pick up my dog (he has to be sedated at the vet due to the anxiety), two different receptionists each called my partner's phone and mine within five minutes of each other to share the same information. Why didn't you communicate with each other and only call one of us once? Further, during this same visit they held my dog for about 8 hours. In those 8 hours, nobody could give me a quote for how much the day's services were going to be even after I asked four different people.

Alissa Bolling

The doctor was compassionate and knowledgeable. Getting an appointment was easy, and the wait time in the lobby was minimal. This is one of the few places in the greater Portland area that will treat small animals and pocket pets like rodents.

I adopted a very (unbeknownst to me) sick kitty on a Tuesday and brought him in on the following Friday for a check up upon realizing that he was as sick as he was. We were both treated with kindness and compassion by everyone in this clinic. I was unfortunately given the devastating news that my new baby was FIV+ and, ultimately, I decided to put him down with love. We both received nothing but support, love, and gentle care during the entire procedure. It’s been a few days and I’ve come to terms with what needed to happen, and I need to write this review to thank the entire staff for their compassion, empathy, sympathy, and understanding. I could sense genuine sorrow from the vet doctor who assisted my kitty during this process, which you wouldn’t expect from someone who practices this procedure (I’m sure) often. Thank you sincerely to the entire staff, from me and little Lenny.

WAS the Best place to take your pet! Now Only if you want to Pay Pay Pay. Initially Charged me $160 for one fluid dose and some ant-sick pills (not enough for this sick of cat) instead of just telling me my cat was dying. The next day They wanted to run an additional $586 to confirm what I thought, and when I asked if she was dying again offered me an Euthanasia/ cremation package for $364.50? Was told one Dr. Can't go off another's chart!? My cat died the next day, 2 days after the $160 exam. I would have rather been told no amount of money will save your cat, than to feel I dont have enough money to save her.
