This was the first time my cat has been to any vet since he was neutered and I had my concerns as to how he would take the visit. Short story, it was excellent and my cat enjoyed it too. I met with Alison Lord and he asst. Shawnese. Both of them were able to handle and work with my cat without an issue, and my cat is not one to sit still for long. He had his shots and didn't even know it. So now I have a healthy cat and an awesome place with great staff to take said cat.

I recently adopted an older Lab and made a preliminary appointment to check out the old girl's health. When I called to make another appointment a month later (my girl's been having trouble with her back legs) they were quick to make one for the next day. Every time we have visited all staff member were accommodating to both me and my dog, went over every concern, and explained their process for us. They never pushed us to do something we weren't comfortable with, and I know they care just as much about my dog as I do. I feel we really lucked out.

Susan Mahon

Neat, clean and loved on all the pets that came in!

Donna Kinsel

Too slow!!!! Simple things take hours! Either understaffed or over complicated office procedures!! Worst than waiting for a human doctor! And the room is freezing. Oh and did I mention the $85 last minute appt fee, wait one hour. Now in 1hr 15. Just took him back for his blood to be drawn, took 5 minutes and $300. If you’re going to charge this much be more concious of other people’s time!!

I adopted a rescue cat earlier this year, and my vet shortly after diagnosed late stage chronic kidney disease. Recently, I left my kid's soccer game to find my cat weak and disoriented and unable to see/hear. I stayed awake with her all night. After looking online in the morning, I found Pearl Animal Hospital since my vet, like a lot of others, doesn't have Sunday hours. The receptionists were super compassionate and welcomed me and my cat to the clinic as a walk-in appointment. The veterinarians and technicians were exceptional, and they expedient in getting an exam and stabilizing my cat. They determined that she had had a stroke. Although I's spent the better part of a year trying to give my poor rescue the best quality of life, I asked the team about deciding put my cat down. The doctor counseled me and left me with all information and time I needed to make a decision. After some discussion with family and prayer, I knew that it was time. The team at Pearl helped me along with the process, step-by-step. I am so grateful to the team for making my good-bye so comfortable, digniified, and the best possible one I could hope for. My heartfelt thanks to Pearl!

This place is REALLY wonderful. Not just to MY dog either! They’re nice to ALL the dogs that come though the door! Side note, they went out of THEY’RE way to get all of Chutney(my dog)’s stuff from his previous Dr. who is ending there practice! It was very nice not to have to track all of the stuff he’s been through down just to change Veterinarians! Way to go you guys! You are probably gonna end up being on my places to go that is actually GOOD! LoL!

I moved more than 15 times when I was a corporate warrior (always with cats in the family) and been a client at so many animal clinics that I could write a Zagat book on them! Over the past six years, living in the Pearl District in Portland, the Pearl Animal Hospital quickly earned and kept my vote for the Best of the Best. Dr. Lord helped me with two cats heading into old age when I needed options, not one expensive solution, for their care. On the Saturday afternoon that I had to say goodbye to them (both had terminal conditions), Dr. Anders kept the office open and the staff there to make sure we had the time and the loving support we needed. Now that I have a new young cat, I’m enjoying the flip side – the excellent advice on preventive care. I cannot say enough about the skill and client service that you will receive from the doctors, the vet techs and the client service specialists who greet you at the front door.

Michael Miller

Needed to do a walk in and they were very accommodating. It was a busy day but they checked on us consistently and allowed us to walk our dog in between visits from the tech and vet. Very nice and thorough.

Super awesome people. I was in a massive time crunch and they came through. Everything was perfect and everyone was so kind and understanding. I don't know it's price compared to others, but whatever it is, it proved worth it.

Cameron Johnson

The best vet I’ve ever visited. Always feel like I’m a value customer and can easily see how much they love my dog.

Jessica Burgess

Staff are always friendly and approachable. They are very knowledgeable and genuinely care about my dog. Definitely sticking with them!

As an older person and lifelong pet owner, I have been in and out of a lot of pet care places. The Pearl Animal Hospital has to be one of the best I have ever encountered. The premises are spotless and retain their like-new appearance. Most important is that everyone on staff are caring professionals who will do whatever it takes to give you and your pet the best possible service. I had a highly technical issue regarding vaccinations and international travel. Pearl Animal Hospital researched the issues, provided support on the particular country, and got us through the USDA certification process with constant and patient attention to every detail. I highly recommend them.

The personnel were kind and clear with their recommendations for my elderly cats treatment. Tucker felt comfortable with them and they were very gentle. Not going to lie, he needs some expensive treatments, but they seemed more interested in his comfort and quality of life than what I could spend on him.

Extremely friendly staff that spent a lot of time with us , but wow are they expensive for medication. Whatever the normal price is for anything on a vets list, double it. Medications are literally half the price online and they throw an extra hurdle in the way by making you get an original, signed prescription to send for meds (vet policy, not the pharmacy). I'm used to a 10-20% mark-up, which I usually pay to support an office, but double is ridiculous. That being said, they are excellent and they are very good about giving quotes up front.

The only way they could improve would be if they came to my home for the visit, and brought cheese cake.

My pup and I are new to Portland and we visited Pearl Animal per a friend's recommendation, and it was by far the best vet experience we've ever had (and we've been to LOTS). Everyone took their time with my dog and me, and they were very thorough and accommodating with vaccines, tests, etc. Dr. Scott was extremely friendly, as was the technician Shawnese. The facility is stylish and clean, and located conveniently downtown. All in all, a great experience and highly recommended!

I’m so happy to have found this lovely group open on Sunday for my ailing dog. Great experience and felt extremely comfortable with them handling my dog in the back. The offer for them to do what was needed in the exam room another bonus!

Kelly Gajer

Do. Not. Support. This overpriced bourgeois vet is a Pearl nightmare. What they charged me was insulting. Three weeks later, as I was going to have my special friend put down, the hospital I took her to took one look at her and said, "She has Lymphoma." And, when they told me her quality of life was limited, they didn't even charge me for the exam! Pearl Animal Hospital could have saved me the expensive price tag and done the right thing and walked me through treatment and pricing options, instead of shoving a clipboard under my nose when I was vulnerable and worried sick about my cat's health. Then I was told to see an oncologist. Seriously? If the animal hospital knew in 15 minutes that my cat was dying of cancer, why did this vet yank a grand out of my credit card, and refer me to a cancer doctor? They saw the same thing and took advantage of me at my weakest point. The only reason it's getting 1 star is so I can actually post this. BE CAREFUL WHERE YOU TAKE YOU PETS!

Our dog had a great experience great doctors!

My dog is very fearful and afraid of the vet. The staff was very kind and knowledgeable about the proper way to handle a fearful pet. Very professional.

I'm rating the Pearl Animal Hospital a one star because they at least refunded me for my bad experience. I would say that my recent experience warrants zero stars. I've been taking my two cats to the Pearl Animal Hospital for the last two years. Unfortunately, I'm very disappointed with my recent experience there on August 18th. I had a very negative experience with my cat, Fitzgerald, while at the Pearl Animal Hospital. I brought Fitz in for an emergency appointment on Saturday (August 18th) because he had swallowed five small cloth balls from an octopus toy. We came in extremely stressed out because he was acting lethargic and wouldn't eat anything. The veterinarian, Dr. Lord, scruffed Fitz almost right away when he reacted to her pressing on his stomach. Fitz isn't an aggressive cat, but he was labeled as such because he doesn't like to be scruffed. My old veterinarian would always pet my cat for a while before trying to examine him because cats tend to be a little more picky on who touches them. After the vet left the room, the vet tech came in and started listing off the recommended care routine, which would have been $1,200 (for a few x-rays). I felt that the Pearl Animal Hospital tried to tack on a lot of unnecessary costs because we were in a vulnerable position (worried about the health of our cat). The vet tech stated that he needed something to calm him down (a sedative) just to take the x-rays. He's had x-rays before and never needed a sedative. I said that I didn't really want him to have to take a sedative since I thought he had an intestinal blockage. He was given a sedative anyways and something else for pain management. I don't think either of the medications were necessary and did him more harm than good. We also didn't fully consent to having him sedated. The vet tech said that she could attempt the x-rays without the sedative and then came back saying that she sedated him (because he supposedly needed it). I also asked that the x-rays be looked at in-house before being sent out to the consultants. Our old vet (Hillsdale Vet Hospital) did that before to save some money. Furthermore, the sedative is actually what I'm the most upset about. It made it impossible to tell if his condition was worsening or if he was just lethargic from the medication. I also believe he was given more than was written down because he was completely out of it. The vet tech stated that the sedative was mild and he shouldn't feel the effects for long, but he was insanely lethargic when we got home. We ended up taking him to the hospital in the morning because he wasn't responding anymore. While we were at Dove Lewis the first time (Sunday morning), the vet wasn't able to tell if he was lethargic because of the sedative or something more serious. We were then sent home with him because they believed he was still feeling the effects of the medication. I then called the Pearl Animal Hospital and asked if they had prescription diet cat food to give Fitz. I found out we were supposed to get a few cans of prescription diet cat food, but we were never given it (even though we had paid for it). Fitz' condition continued to get worst and I called the clinic about eight times on Sunday to get advice whether or not to take him to the hospital again. The receptionist kept saying that she would ask our veterinarian and get back to us, but we didn't receive a response. I believe this was negligent since an intestinal blockage can be life-threatening if not treated quickly. Each time I called I was treated as if Fitz' situation didn't qualify as an emergency. The time I spent waiting for a reply or advice could have cost me my cat's life. He had emergency surgery to remove the obstruction and was in the hospital for three days (and cost us $5,300). Fitz could have gotten an endoscopy if we had gotten better advice earlier on. I can't express how upset I am with the level of care he received from the Pearl Animal Hospital and I don't think I'll be returning.

At the start of a week-long vacation in Portland, our dog Lo suddenly started falling down and could not keep herself balanced. It was an hour before Pearl Animal Hospital closed, so we did not expect that they could fit us in. However, not only did they give us an appointment, they stayed late with no complaint to help her. Everyone in the office was kind, gentle, and very very clearly genuinely interested in figuring out what was happening to Lo and how to help. Dr. Lord did a thorough exam, tests, and clearly explained the diagnoses and likely prognosis for Lo. Our entire visit including running blood and urine tests was WAY less expensive than I anticipated, and not only did Dr. Lord call us to discuss results, but the office called several times during the week to check on Lo. Thankfully, my dog is doing much better, and while we hope to avoid more emergency vet trips, we know where to go while in Portland!

I am writing this review because they took excellent care of our pup but I do feel there are two things that potential customers should be made aware of. 1) Wait times. Even routine appts for vaccinations seem to take a lot longer than necessary...part of this is due to issue number two... 2) Cost: After going here for two years I got the distinct impression that they were trying to up-sell us every time we came in. Sometimes in one appointment they would leave three separate times and each time bring back a new estimate of care and cost. This is particularly annoying for a mother who has to bring her toddler with her. They charge an absurd amount for a visit fee (even if you are paying for vaccinations and procedures) and they are very pushy with the care they recommend, almost making you feel badly if you ask for alternatives. We finally found a new vet we trusted and like and had a mass removal surgery and dental cleaning and tooth extraction done by them for our pup and the cost for all of it was literally half of just the estimate Pearl Animal Hospital gave us for the dental cleaning WITHOUT extractions. My pup is my baby and they did take care of him when we took him there so I do not regret anything but I do feel taken advantage off a bit now.

The staff here is great. My dog and I stop in for treats on regular walks, so that he has the opportunity for positive, non-exam related interactions.

I'll start with the good. If you want a friendly environment when you visit (not necessarily when you call), and you'd like the office to be relatively pretty... they are good for that. Unfortunately, you don't pick a vet because you enjoy hanging out with them. I'm livid with this place. I took my puppy here twice, saw two different doctors - one did nothing for her eye problem and the other made it worse. They were patronizing and treated me like I'm an idiot when I called in concerned that their medication was making her eye visibly red and irritated. They were slow and rude to get back with me about this urgent problem. I ended up calling an old vet two states away for advice, and running her into an emergency vet before getting a call back. (I also asked a vet online for advice and none of these three other doctors thought the medication she prescribed was a good idea or that I should keep using it.) Dr. Lord was so certain that this medication was right for her, that she said if I brought her back in she could give a different form (ointment instead of drops) of the EXACT SAME MEDICATION. The eye exam and medication incident with them made the problem so much worse than it was and has added considerable cost and suffering for our poor puppy. Additionally, I never complained about price with them - not once, yet they spent way too much time justifying their costs to me... even though, I'd gladly pay three times what they charge IF IT ACTUALLY WORKED. I'm furious, however, that they charged me to mess up my puppy's eye. What kind of service is that? They really should be more of dog life coaches or something than actual medical "professionals." Their happy place is lecturing you on training and spaying when you're there for an actual problem. I've had the spay talk now about four times... I'll do it when we think best. Maybe you should fix real issues before they become emergencies.

They really went above and beyond with their services preparing my cat for an international travel. They figured out what specific paperwork was needed for the destination country and made a really complicated process very easy for me. Best service I had in a veterinary, can't recommend it highly enough!

Highest standard of care.

We have been taking our pups to Pearl Animal Hospital since they were born about 8 years ago. They treat our dogs as part of their family. Couldn't recommend more.

So far Pearl Animal Hospital have been very patient with me and provided amazing service.

Evrim Icoz

Switched to them for my cat's oral surgery which ended up being closer to 1/3 the price my SE Vet was charging., She is happy and went well. They have been always nice to me and gentle.

Jenny Bryant

Everyone was so nice and helpful. We went in to get a certificate so my mother's dog could fly. And the vet went way above and beyond to tell us all things going on with the dog and what to look out for and explaining so much, as we were adopting the dog. I am amazed.

Melody Frye

Everyone at 5his clinic was super nice and helpful and the Veterinarian was very knowledgeable. They have contacted me several times since the appointment to check on Tazie and to ensure he is OK.

My dog had a skin infection. Dr Lord knew just by looking at him. She prescribed him the meds he needed. She didn't dink around and tell me he needed a bunch of unnecessary stuff like the last vet I took him to. The staff is super awesome, especially the front desk girl Andrea (she brought an amazing cup of coffee to calm my nerves while we waited). So professional and so nice! I'm glad I made the trek to this vet.

Caring and reasonably priced

Dr Lorde gave my dog a great checkup, and she also performed an outpatient surgery. She has - by far - been the best vet we have ever dealt with: professional, thorough, informed and including us in the process (for example with frequent telephone updates through the day as our dog was having surgery). The rest of the staff are equally professional, informed and courteous. I highly recommend this clinic!
