This place was amazing, everyone there was knowledgeable about my turtle and how I could better set up his habitat. I know for a fact if anything else comes up with my baby I will bring him here again!

I have 11 reptiles. I am in no way a collector, as these guys are in my home because they were my son’s, and I took over their care because he is not here to take care of them any longer. I try my very best, and I take very seriously the advise that I am given re the care of these guys. With that being said, the vet tech that I saw was argumentative at the jump. She argued with me the exact name of the moss that I use in their hides, and because I did not know the exact name of the moss (I buy at the pet store), she became what seemed to be in frustration. What client wants to feel like they have to demand some respect from the tech when they are already stressed out about the stats of their family member? The Dr that I saw was very knowledgeable at what she does, and I do feel that my gecko received great care from her; I just wish that the vet tech would lose her awful attitude (this is the 2nd time I’ve delt with her, and she was the same both times). It’s not a competition on how much you know about reptiles; this is about their care only. Please don’t make the client feel that they don’t care about their pet, because that is a very terrible feeling to leave your office with.

We were watching a friend's senegal, which we have done for about 15 years. This morning when we went to uncover our birds and the senegal, we saw that the bird was in serious distress looking like it had a stroke. being Sunday, not many places are open where we could get this bird rapid help. We could get to this vet within 10 minutes and possibly save his life. There are no other places within 15 to 30 minutes that treats parrots. We called as they were open. The person answering the phone said that without an appointment the vet could not see us. Did she query the vet first knowing this was a life threatening emergency to the bird? No she just kept insisting we needed an appointment. Obviously this woman had zero compassion. We have NEVER had a vet who was open turn down an emergency situation in the thirty years we have been working with parrots. Since this hard-hearted person works for the vet, this is a very poor reflection on the vet. We spent the next hour trying to find a place we could take the bird as there are no others within a distance to make it in time. Alas, the bird died when it could at least have had a chance had this place showed even a modicum of compassion and caring. We had used this vet in the past when she first opened up. We will now never, ever even consider this vet in the future. This vet, due to whoever it was answering the phone, is not worth paying her for ser vices and needs to re-think her career. There are no vets in the Portland metro area after hours or weekends that treats exotic birds. If you need an avian vet during the week, The Avian Medical Center in Lake Oswego is the place to go; certainly not this one. If there was a zero star choice, this one earned it. ZERO, ZERO, ZERO!!!!! Further reply..."As you have experienced in the past with your birds at our clinic" clearly refutes her statement of us being new clients. Also, if she was hearing the conversation, why did she not get on the phone herself? Had she actually heard the call she would have heard that the kill birds comment was directed to one of the places mentioned that from past experience and recounts from many of our clients in the past. We called all of the references the cold-hearted person answering the phone spoke about. Most were closed, one that does has no avian vet on Sundays and ALL the others did not see birds and do not have an avian vet on staff. There are no other options for bird owners in the Portland metro area. We have spoken to several of the vets and they all said no self respecting vet would turn down an emergency if they were open at the time; so, her refusal indicates a total lack of caring. Lastly, as she claims they are the only exotic specialists in the state, it is a complete and total prevarication on her part. There are others. Google licensed exotics vets in Oregon. The statement: "it is true that a parrot could get life-saving care here, however like I mentioned, we cannot possibly help all the patients that could benefit from our care, all at once" is a complete piece of self-aggrandizement B.S. as I have ever read. How many emergencies does she think happen all at once in Portland. It is also to be noted that the information given to us is outdated.

As a new owner of Sugar Gliders, I am very happy and impressed with the care given to both of our little critters! They might be little but won our hearts quickly, so getting quality care was important to me. Both of our babies have had problems, and both times I felt totally confident and happy with the care received! I would recommend this clinic to anyone with an exotic pet!

Linda Cruikshank

Everyone there was wonderful when I brought in my 2 rats, on 2 different occasions. They treated my girls like they were the most important pets there. I appreciated that, because they were very important to me. I was included in making choices for their care and felt part of the team. If you have an exotic pet, I would definitely recommend this place.

The offices are very prompt and clean when arriving. They notify you upon arrival if there is an extended delay from other appointments. They offer free coffee, tea, and water while you wait in the room. I would 100% recommend asking about how to obtain pet insurance to help out with costs at your first appointment here because their prices are higher than other vets. I wasn't too impressed with the follow-up in this office probably because of how busy they are. I moved onto a less busy vet who specializes in rabbits.

Lovely place! I took my ball python here when they had a bad shed and they were super helpful. I have also taken rescues here and they are very upfront about all costs and what you're paying for.

Attended a visit to this clinic with my friend, they were so accommodating to her and her pet rabbits needs. Even gave him a blankie and some carrot tops to make him more comfortable and less stressed!!! They were so friendly, asked a thorough amount of information and even willingly gave estimates and helped work with the pricing as much as possible! Awesome place.

Our avian vet is out of the office more frequently. We decided to take a chance on a new vet and I'm glad I did! I didn't feel like the price was much more then our other avian vet, but the quality of service definitely was! They screened or birds thoroughly and caught something in one of our birds that our other vet missed.

I wish I could give 6 stars! We live down the street from Avian and Exotic Veterinary Care and had passed by them a million times in the car, so when I woke up to a sick, senior bunny this Friday morning, they were the first ones we called. They were able to see us 30 minutes later (8:30am), checked Wesley in for the day, and then kept him overnight. The vet tech that greeted us, Christine, was amazing and calming (and I was in tears) and ensured us that Wesley was in good hands. They called us every few hours throughout the day, gave us options and pricing along the way, and made me feel empowered (not pressured) to make the best decision that worked for us. We spoke with Dr. Gibbons over the phone, who was great, and a few other awesome, friendly vet techs. Christine checked us out the following day, gave me all the discharge instructions, and the final cost even came in under the original quote. Wesley is doing great and wouldn't be here if it weren't for this talented, specialized team. I can't thank them enough!

It doesn't matter whether we bring our ducks, ferrets or whatever kiddo we are taking care of at the moment the drs and staff here are always ready and willing to help in any way they can. So happy to have a place we can bring our kiddos and know they're in good hands.

I was a nervous mess taking my sweet Edgar Allen "Poe" in today for his first checkup. It went so smoothly. The gals that looked over Poe KNEW what they were doing. All so full of knowledge, tips and encouragement. The place looked clean, had plenty of parking and I was completely comfortable. I left feeling like an empowered bunny owner. Yes, the bill was high, but as to be expected with an exotic pet. I came prepared and even got info on possible future boarding of my little guy. The gals were kind enough to show me a sweet bunny already being boarded with them. Left me feeling like I could totally trust Poe in their hands, if I need boarding in the future. Thanks Avian!

My review has exceeded the character limit so I am going to post it elsewhere because I need it to be read in its entirety. It is evidently a negative review but I recommend everyone read it before taking your pet to this place. They may offer free coffee, etc., but that matters less in the long run. The blond, heavy, bespectacled receptionist is, in my opinion, 100% to blame for something gone very wrong with my pet. I will update with my links here soon. This is a sad story I do not want to remain unheard. Update: I had a similar experience to Kendra's (see below). It is unfortunate my pet had to pay the price for the receptionist's urge to get out and hit up the Cheesecake Factory before closing instead of doing her job and letting me see a vet for something that would have easily saved his life in under 5 minutes. My review will explain all of this and hopefully it will make more sense then, but I agree--what a very rude and inhuman attitude for someone appointed to work in this field. Also, in the responses from the vet to the negative reviews, it sounds they are just trying to save face. I believe so because I had a similar experience and I was 100% amicable during my entire 4 minutes there. I have a witness as well who agrees that the bespectacled blonde lady was just rude and did not know how to deal with people. Doctor, we are posting in public forums because only this way will there be any chance of saving another person from a similar bad experience and also, it's our only small hope at potentially enacting a change. You can't in all due respect be OK with the positive reviews then get angry at the ones that don't gloat over how amazing your establishment is. It is not. Perhaps you need to open your eyes to the people you hire. I didn't even get to speak with you. Had I, most likely this would have been a non-issue. But your receptionist wanted to leave early and she lied about not accepting Walk Ins (among other things). I'm sorry, but that is not my fault as I did not hire her, and I am furthermore not the one that continues to keep her employed. You may be a great vet, but how will your clients know if she keeps on turning them away at the door, especially when their pets are literally dying? Don't be mad when the poor decisions of the staff you hire come back to reflect poorly on you. They are the face of your business, and in hiring them, you entrust them to act on your behalf. Perhaps this should be reviewed rather than pointing the finger at innocent clients who entrusted you enough initially to go and seek help...from you. ---- Update #2... I just read Bec's review. Her story is as identical to mine as possible (except my reptile is still dying four days later and still suffering every day). Doctor, are you aware that everywhere you advertise yourself as a vet that does accept walk-ins? This may be why this problem keeps reoccurring, although there's no accounting for plain lack of heart (on the bespectacled receptionist's part). I too have had to hire people to work with me, "under" me, or what have you....and the only role I think this one would be qualified for is that of Executioner on Death Row except I'm afraid that she might giggle and wet her pants too much in the process of pushing the button. Just saying. Lady has no heart for anything that's alive. And yet she represents you.

Great people to work with, very kind and knowledgeable. Sadly one of my male rats formed a facial tumor and his health declined rather rapidly and I had to make the hard decision to put him down. Avian and Exotic Veterinary was very kind and understanding through the whole process. I got his ashes and paw prints back and they sent me a hand written card of sympathy. I would recommend them to anyone with a exotic pet in need of care.

I brought my bearded dragon, Dash in for a check up recently because he wasn't acting himself and was very lethargic. They did a fecal test on him. Turns out he had parasites. Medication was prescribed for Dash and he is acting himself and eating again. We had wonderful service and the Dr. Took her time to talk to us without having the feeling of being rushed. I am glad I came here.

I am so happy with the service I got here. I brought my jungle carpet python in this morning with a very bad injury from her food. Dr. rose and I think the techs name was Margot were so helpful and informative. We may have to do surgery but trying a different route first. Dr. Harrenstien, Alexa, and the lovely blonde woman that greeted us (forgive me, I have forgotten her name), all took amazing care when we were in about a week and a half ago. A little while back I noticed one of our flock members, a Rhode Island Red hen, behaving differently. She was waddling instead of walking with her normal gait, and seemed to have a some swelling. After calling multiple places to find a vet that could take a look at her, I was given the number for Avian and Exotic Veterinary Care. I called on a Saturday thinking it would be a bit to get an apppointment. Not thinking it was an emergency but not wanting to risk it, they had an appointment that Monday morning. After registering online, I called back to confirm the appointment. Luckily, let me know they had a cancelation for Sunday, so we grabbed it for Sugar (our girl). Knowing there aren’t many good outcomes when a hen starts showing signs of distress, we simply hoped for the best. Maybe all they could do was make her comfortable for a little longer, whatever it would be, we’d stay hopeful. Dr. Harrenstien was also hopeful thinking maybe she could drain some fluid to temporarily ease the swelling. Unfortunately, once they got in there with an ultrasound, they realized she had a sizable tumor, and draining it wasn’t an option. So, there wasn’t anything they could do to make her comfortable. Knowing we were about to have a gnarly heat wave, and not wanting her to suffer, we decided to say goodbye to her. It was a surprisingly emotionally, and painful decision for us. Some people think backyard chickens are just peripheral to your life, and not interacting pets. I feel those folks are wrong. Sugar was extremely engaged with us. She was curious, sweet, and talkative. Our loss of her was (and is) going to be rough. Throughout the entire experience, the staff there was incredibly gracious. While we said our goodbyes they gave us plenty of space, and time to begin the grieving process. When they returned Sugar to us, they draped her with napkins they had decorated with her name, and a heart. I can’t express clearly enough how grateful we were for that. This clinic truly does care for animals, and they understand the love their people have for their pet friends. We will bring the rest of our ladies there, and recommend them to our other backyard chicken friends. But most importantly, I want to thank them all for taking care of Sugar (and us) in her final moments. She was so loved, and they treated her with such gentle kindness that she so greatly deserved. For that, we are grateful!

I brought my bunny Henry to Avian and Exotic. There are a lot of veterinarians out there who do not have the experience with exotic animals and it is unfortunate. I was lost, I went to three other vets prior to avian and exotic and Henry was misdiagnosed. Finally three vet offices later and a lot of money wasted I find Avian and Exotic and Henry was examined and diagnosed correctly. I was in tears after leaving this place because I felt so relieved knowing Henry was going to be ok. Paul listened, genuinely cared was confident and knew how to handle Henry. Paul Gibbons, you and your team are amazing! Thank you all so much for saving Henry. For all you bunny owners out there who do not know where to take your bun, hands down this is the best place! Your furry friend is in good hands.

Joe Jackson

Friendly staff and very helpful.

Two visits so far, and both exemplary. Our first visit was for a checkup for our new bearded dragon. Dr. Harrenstein we knew from working at the Zoo, so we were extremely happy to have her years of expertise for our little guy. She gave us great recommendations and was a great help to his health. Second visit was when our we had an emergency with our beardie. A quick call on the phone, the front desk encouraged us to come in and they would fit us in since it was an emergency. We rushed over, Dr. Gibbons quickly determined what needed to be done, and our little guy is back to normal with no issues whatsoever. All of the staff here are always very kind and helpful. During our emergency trip, vet staff kept checking in on us since we were there for a few hours, asking if we needed anything, encouraging us to go get food if needed and that they'd keep us updated, etc. The rooms are always very clean, we've had to wait a few extra minutes for a room while they clean it down between guests which in my opinion is perfectly acceptable for knowing your pet will be getting a nice clean space for their checkup. Vet assistants knew just the right way to hold our beardie when he was squirming because he didn't want his mouth checked, and they helped set us up with so much information that we now feel much more confident in our care for our guy. Highly, highly recommend this place to anyone with exotic pets. Some places may be cheaper for a checkup, but I doubt you'll get the same level of expertise and care.

Becky Pearon

Waiting time was horrible.

If I would have stayed here, they would have killed my bird, too many meds, not proper care, they did not stabilize her hurt leg, bone degenerated, and it costed an arm and a leg for them to almost kill her. Go to Avian medical Center for your feathered family.

Nichole Rip

They have helped my bunny with a tooth infection and abscess, which is very very difficult to do. Her surgery was completed without incident and she healed very nicely. The office staff is also pleasant and organized and very caring. I'm grateful to Avian & Exotics and highly recommend them for non standard Pet Care!

Emilee Carsner

How the heck do I get in contact with the vet? I’m looking for the cost of rabbit neutering and the phone prompt is extremely confusing and not helpful for new patients.

Linda N

they really really do everything they can to understand and explain. they really try accommodate.

Bec White

I would give no stars if I could! I went here because I noticed my bird was not acting right. They were the closest clinic that treated birds. They could see she was not well and they still refused to look at her. She later passed away that same day. If you need a vet I don’t recommend them. They are not helpful and told me they could see my bird on Thursday at the earliest. That was four days away.

Luci Smith

Amazing clinic for our chameleon! We were immediately brought into a room and offered coffee water or tea. Very clean place, great staff, overall best vet experience for exotics! A little pricier than other places but worth it.

Dr. Harrenstein is our bearded dragon's vet. She and her staff are incredibly knowledgeable and kind. Our beardie Max has been in multiple times for checkups and was also recently in for a biopsy for a bump on his lip. During the biopsy Dr. Harrenstein called us to give us updates on him, as well as great detail for how to take care of him while he healed from the biopsy. Staff often call us after appointments (where we're addressing any issues) to check up on Max and his progress and to see if there's anything else that needs to be done for his health. She and her staff have extensive knowledge of many exotic pets and have been a great wealth of knowledge for us, from habitat to diet to enrichment for our special little dragon. I can't recommend them enough!

Was told we would have help with behavior issues and transfered all our records from our regular vet..just to be ran over the coals with high priced test that where already done and results where in our records for our cockatoo..and they just wanted to redo test and not once discussed with us behavioral modification that we came for in the the first place...we will never go back to the the his place again...

I was dissapointed with my two experiences with this vet, especially considering the great expectations I had based on the glowing reviews on google. For my first visit, I called this vet well in advance of hatching and receiving a large flock of diverse and rare chickens because I wanted to make sure that all hatched and day old bantam chicks were properly vaccinated with Marek's. The appt scheduler let me know that their recommendation was to set up an initial appointmentioned ($85) without the chicks to discuss treatment plan with the verbal suggestion that the rate would be discounted since I was not bringing any animals with me. I agreed to this plan of action. The vet assistant and the vet were the same for both of my visits. When I was physically in the office the first time, the vet assistant and vet laid out the treatment plan of buying a full bottle of Marek's vaccine ($100) for the vaccination of an estimated 10 chicks, and billing per hour rather than per animal ($160/hr). I was also, again, verbally told that there would be a discount on my initial consultation fee because I did not have any animals nor was it lengthy. All of that I greatly appreciated. What I did not appreciate about that first visit, however, was having the vet assistant leave the room and refer to me as "crazy" in the halls nor having the vet say to my face that I was "just this side of crazy" for my love of animals, the large, exotic flock I had planned, and my diy building of a greenhouse/coop enclosure to safely house the flock. I don't feel that those remarks were kind, in good taste, or very professional for representatives of a avian and exotic veterinary clinic to make. I did not mention at the time that I overhead the vet assistant's hallway remark and I brushed off the vet's direct comment by saying "I guess so" in a shrug, truthfully to avoid potentially having subpar care the day of the actual vaccinations. Especially considering the vet told me she is the only certified exotic avian vet in OR. My second visit started out ok. The front desk receptionist ogled my chicks and took lots of pictures of them, which was sweet. I waited for a bit and the same vet assistant from before came in and took inventory of the number of chicks requiring a vaccination (9) and the vet came in shortly thereafter. The actual procedure was rather brief (<15 mins). My visit was soured after the procedure, however, when the vet assistant advised that there would not be a discount on the initial consultation as originally communicated to me twice before the procedure visit. I let the vet assistant know that I was dissapointed by that, because it was in conflict with what I had been led to believe, and requested that she discuss the original communications with the director/vet, which she did. When she came back she informed me that it had been decided that there had been a misinterpretation between the vet asst and vet during my consultation visit, and that no discount would be given. I paid the bill in full, but shared with the vet assistant that I was dissapointed by the decision to make me (the client) literally pay for their internal "misinterpretation". The vet asst apologized and invited me back in the event I needed any future services. I realize that she was most likely doing her best to move on from an admittedly awkward predicament that was most likely out of her hands, but the invitation to come back as she exited the room having just charged me well more than I was expecting left me feeling rather patronized. I am rating the experience two stars, rather than one, because the vaccinations were successfully performed and all my chicks have initially recovered from the procedure without issue thus far. I would encourage anyone promised a discount to get that in writing. And while I'm not trying to suggest with my 2 star review that this vet is, across the board, a two star practice (I have no evidence or alternative experiences to draw from), I would encourage you to steal yourself to the possibility of a similar experience as me.

I wanted to love this place as my primary vet care for my reptiles but after being received by a rude and aggressive vet tech I will be looking elsewhere. As a client I expected superior customer service but instead received no introduction, no eye contact, a turned body away during the entire consultation, snappy and aggressive communication and little effort in getting to know me as a client. While she may excel at her medical tasks she failed to keep me as a client due to poor customer interaction. The facilities are clean and well kept, however, I was not impressed by the follow-up call where my animals issues were referred to as "stuff was completed". After my interaction yesterday, I read through the rest of the reviews where another lady had similar issues with an aggressive and rude staff member. This appears to be a reoccurring issue that should be addressed by the owner.

I don't understand how people can rate this place with one star! I'd give it more than 5 if it were an option. From the minute we walked into the door with our little gerbils (Steven & Issaac), we immediately felt welcome. We instantly got a room and were served fresh coffee which made all of my anxiety go away. We went there originally to get one of our boys teeth trimmed since he was around 3 1/2 years old and had given up chewing. The woman who took all of our boys information was so nice and empathetic to our situation and the vet was so gentle handling my little gerbil and I could tell my gerbil trusted them completely. They made sure we knew the risks of the surgery and we had to unfortunately make the decision to put them both to sleep together due to their very old age. Luckily they got to spend their entire lives together <3 They were all very kind and made sure we were okay once we left. We're picking up their ashes this Saturday and I'm sure we will be welcomed with the same hospitality as when we came in a week ago. :)

Great avian vet.

The doctors and staff are super knowledgeable and accommodating. They helped diagnose my cockatiel with a bacterial infection, prescribed antibiotics, and showed us how to administer them. They always take the time to explain everything with great detail, offer tips and advice, and even send out an email with notes from the visit (which is great because sometimes I’m too distraught to remember everything). Definitely a wonderful place to take your birds!
