I dug my self into quite a financial hole with these people trying to figure out what's wrong with my dog, and they never figured it out. When another vet did, I dont have the money to fix the issue.

Simply outstanding. In the past year they have saved our senior dogs' lives twice. This hospital is a three hour drive from where we live and we would use them if they were 12 hours away. The skill, professionalism and communication is second to none. Special mention for Dr. DeFrancesco in Cardiology. She is nothing short of an amazing doctor.

Front desk staff were very courteous and helpful. The vets communicated my dogs care plan effectively, and the cost was much lower than other emergency vet care

We are so grateful for all of the wonderful people at the NC State Vet Hospital. They are truly the most compassionate people. Dr. Hedgespeth and the nurses went above and beyond to care for our yellow lab, despite the challenging circumstances. Despite our loss, it was very clear that they did everything possible and more. We are so appreciative of them.

I wish I could say that I had a fantastic experience, especially considering this is NCSU. I did not. I brought in my senior male cat presenting with left front paw pain & him cupping it under. After 1 hour, the veterinarian came out & said all she had done was exam his leg & beyond that they needed to sedate him for rads & a better exam. Mind you, I had warned them when I called ahead he is fractious at the vet & even warned them again when I handed him over. I was told this would take about an hour. At 10pm, the receptionist informed me they wanted me to know "they haven't forgotten you." *chuckle chuckle* & said they were short staffed. I asked if she could find out if they'd even started & was told they hadn't. I asked for my cat back. I was told there was a blocked cat that came in. I understand the urgency of that, but my cat didn't even have a full exam, which was admitted by the veterinarian, & was left to just sit. Had this been a blood clot or a neurological issue, it would be too late. "He is able to bear weight, so I don't think it's neurological. I think it is orthopedic." But had no way to truly determine this. It took 15 minutes to get my cat back. I paid the exam fee, which I shouldn't even be responsible for, because I'm an honorable person. There are also charges on my bill for 3 hours of hospitalization & sedatives my cat never even received! I refused to pay those. I will be contacting Wilma Daley, AR Manager, to request a refund. Next time, don't let pets sit for 2.5 hours from arrival with no real diagnosis & a bunch of "I thinks" & don't let their owners sit in the lobby for hours with zero communication. Especially when I was the only person in the room, so it's not like I could get lost in a crowd of owners. Next time I'll go to VSH in Cary.

This place has a lot of great reviews, but I tried to get an appointment to have my cat seen for a serious heart murmur. He also had a blood test that shows he's got signs of heart disease. Here's what I was told: There are no appointments until DECEMBER!! (Note--we called Veterinary Specialty Hospital in Raleigh and Cary, and were led to believe that they are affiliated with NC State--however, THEY ARE NOT. NC State reached out to me and corrected me, so I am amending my review. VSH does have a cardiologist on staff who teaches at NC State, and they were giving us info about NC State's availability--so we assumed there was a connection). NC State tried to be helpful and place our cat on a cancellation list, but it's just not good enough. I do appreciate their response. I am not saying that we should be prioritized over anyone else's pet with a serious condition. Everyone's pet is important. But I am saying that a cardiac issue is serious, and perhaps they need more staff who can accommodate more pets. My cat is 3.5--he's young and we can save him if we get him diagnosed correctly, and diagnosed NOW. I can't get him on the correct medications unless we are able to have the echocardiograph that shows the structure of his heart. NC State acts like they are the only game in town, and did not recommend another place who could treat him. We can't wait 6 months, and yet he doesn't qualify to go to an ER--his heart is not failing yet. Right now he is asymptomatic, but for how long? Luckily, our own vet right here in Jacksonville advocated for us by calling another vet herself. She's the best, and got us an appointment 5 weeks from now. It's not ideal, but he will be seen by a cardiologist at Triangle Referral Hospital. Don't give up on your pet. If you have to call around and bother people to get your pet seen, then do it. It's a shame there's not more availability in the state for specialty appointments, but it is what it is.

Everyone at the vet school hospital that we encountered during our dog’s surgery and subsequent care were nothing short of wonderful! From Dr Johnson in the ER area to Catherine Si, vet student and the Dr Eby the surgeon, they all took awesome care of our sweet girl. They called us and kept us updated on everything that was going on with our Lacie Dog. So thankful to have such a caring wonderful place to take our dog when she needed them. NC State Vet Hospital is the very best!!!

I took one of my cats here after my primary vet said he needed imaging and further testing ASAP for possible cancer. They were able to get him in immediately and did everything necessary to find out what was wrong and how to fix it. All of the staff members and the vet Dr. Fink were so kind and treated my cat with great care and love. When it was time to take him home he was not stressed or scared at all despite everything done to him. I came from Chapel Hill and would DEFINITELY recommend you bring your pet here no matter how long the drive is.

We took one of our horses to NC State Veterinary Hospital for a non-healing corneal fungal ulcer. A superficial keratectomy was performed on 9/20/19 and he was discharged on 9/23/19 with a follow up re-check on 10/03/19. Dr. Annie Oh was in contact with us throughout his hospital stay as well as for all follow up care. We were very pleased with the care given by the whole medical staff.

I brought my ten year old Alaskan Malamute with cancer to them. He was sick and laid down on the floor. They were afraid of him (for no apparent reason other than his size) and refused to treat him. I went to Vet Specialty Hospital (Dr. Russlander). They were not afraid, did a good job. If you have a small, meek dog that isn't very sick, the vet school MIGHT be able to handle it. Large sick dog, they are too afraid. I wonder how their students are supposed to get experience with difficult animals?

Our family vet referred us to the emergency clinic to run further tests to help diagnose our dog. It was an hour drive, but I was desperate to see him get better. The facility was beautiful and clean upon arriving. The front desk staff were all so friendly and helpful! The vet helping us was a senior year student, but overseen by a mentor. All the vets (students and mentors) were professional, helpful, knowledgeable, and communicated their thoughts and concerns. They were able to finally diagnose our dog and honestly they were much cheaper than my local 24/7 emergency vet clinic. The vets listened to our concerns and issues, documented them, and were very attentive throughout the process. I would absolutely recommend coming here for anything that is beyond your family vet's capabilities. They are worth the drive for us, and if any of our pets were to get sick again we wouldn't hesitate to take them here. They were courteous, professional, and able to help us understand how to best care for our dog as he gets better. Our dog isn't always very friendly to strangers either, but they were happy to help him feel comfortable as he was in their care. I have the upmost faith and trust in them and their teams.

My experience at NC State transformed my understanding of veterinary medicine. It was not simply top notch veterinary care but veterinary care with compassion. I want to give a special shout out to Kristen Price who went above and beyond during my time at NC State. Not only did she take the time to call me each day after my cat's procedure but also went the extra mile of sending me pictures of him during his stay. She truly made me feel supported during a very difficult and emotional time. I also want to thank the wonderful receptionists at the front desk who greeted me after my 5 hour drive. Yes, 5 hours. They whisked me into an empty room, gave me water, helped me get comfortable, and were very welcoming. It might seem like a little thing but it brightened my spirits. I also want to commend Dr. Yoshikawa and Dr. Magestro for making dreams come true. For any devoted pet owner the scariest thing to hear is a diagnosis of cancer. Not only did both doctors take the time to answer my questions, talk to me on the phone, and email me (and yes, during the holiday season!) but they also made me aware of a special fund that finances treatments for pets like mine. To put it lightly, their help securing this funding made my holiday season and truly meant the world to me.

I was referred to them by my regular vet, and glad they did. Everyone here is very nice, and will try to answer every question you have. They are great with animals. I had to make a very hard decision, and they were there for me. Even at 1am. They did a great job, making my baby comfortable, including me and my husband. They make that process a little less stressed and try to make it more about you and your pet. I am glad they got to meet my fur baby, and I will always use them!

Just had to visit the hospital for my pup the other day. I called in advance and they were ready and waiting for me. They were very compassionate and very thorough and my dogs records were immediately sent to my vet so that I could do follow-up. I would have given 5 stars if not for being able to overhear some very hard conversations with other patients, those should have been handled in private rooms. But given that, you could see they were doing their best.

My cat Conan was seen regularly by NC State Veterinary Hospital's dermatology and cardiology services. The cardiology service checked her heart murmur two years in a row and deemed it part of aging, not heart disease. This meant she needed less check ups. I appreciated their honesty and that they were not trying to charge me for needless appointments. Their dermatologist Dr. Marcy Murphy was the only one able to get Conan's recurring ear infections under control. When Conan started losing weight earlier this month, I brought her to Dr. Murphy thinking it could be an ear infection causing her not to want to eat. She ruled this out, but offered to order blood work. Thank goodness she did because this showed Conan's kidneys were failing. I rushed her over to NC State's Small Animal ER. Dr. Frankie Easley and fourth year student Crystal gave Conan fluids and did an ultrasound to determine the cause. Unfortunately, Conan's kidneys and pancreas were inflamed. She did not respond to fluids and dialysis was discussed. Since she was 17, I decided to was too risky as she only had a 50 percent chance of living another six months. I really appreciated Dr. Easley and Crystal's patience, taking the time to explain all my options. I even learned that Dr. Murphy had popped over from dermatology to visit Conan during the day. I ended up deciding to put Conan down, and Dr. Easley and Crystal were supportive and compassionate. To my surprise, a week later I received sympathy cards from both the dermatology and emergency services as well as a clay imprint of Conan's paws. I cannot say enough about the expertise and caring nature of the vets at NC State. I highly recommend them should your pet need their services.

I took my Cocker Spaniel (Bailee) to them yesterday on March 19 . Bailee had been treated for 2 months for a sprained left paw ,but his health continued to decline daily . From heavy breathing and panting to a collapsed esophagus . After a few hours they finally had an answer for me and knew why my best friend of 8 years was struggling daily to survive . He had a huge tumor / mass in his chest cavity that was causing all his health issues. After talking to the Veterinarian we decided it was in Bailees best interest to be put to sleep. It was the hardest decision that I have ever had to make and I was alone but I had the love and support of the staff and they allowed me to have plenty of time to tell my best friend goodbye and I was able to hold him through the whole process. I am definitely devastated today but have I have the peace of mind after seeing his sweet , relaxed, and calm face after he crossed that rainbow bridge ....

The worst experience your pet and you can have if I can give them no stars I will the website saying it's $155 to see the doctor told me $160 and on the invoice $164 they said the price changes all the time and they have no control of the website, I end up paying $535 and they didn't do nothing they want to do a surgery but the doctor not sure if my can needs or not , I felt like I am at a cheap mechanic shop the try to rip you off and they don't know what they are doing plus the time is another thing they told me 45 minutes to an hour and end up 4 hours and no one was there only me and didn't even let know it will take longer and after 4 hours went home with my sick cat and a bill of $535 they did nothing and they didn't know what is wrong with my cat , THANK YOU... The people here are truly concerned about the animals under their care. When my dog was diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma, I took comfort in the knowledge that people would be able to learn more about marginal cell lymphoma and that all of this would not be for nothing.

I just called to get a quote on help for my pup. Whom ever the woman was that answered was not helpful and couldn't not direct me to anything for help for my pet. I was rushed off the phone as if my situation with my pet was irrelevant. I would not take my pet or give my hard earned money to these over privileged children.

This email was sent to the director. “I would like to share a visit the the emergency clinic at NC state as it was possible the worst experience that I am prepared to share. Originally I was recommended by a few colleagues at fidelity investments with high regard. I was working getting a referral to the clinic however due to unforeseen emergency, I need to take my pet immediately due to excessive bleeding. Covered in blood, I was admitted in. Few moments later I spoke to Dr Ashley Walker about his ordeal and medical history. I explained he had been bleeding for the last few days after his surgery. Sometime in the past few days he had surgery for a hematoma that appeared on top of his benign growth near his colon. The visit was to stop the bleeding and tend to any addition risks. After about an hour she talked about the growth and little focus to the bleeding because it appeared during her evaluation that he was not bleeding anymore. He was not sedated despite she admitted she could get a proper evaluation without it. She explained to follow up with my primary vet on Monday and to hold out until then. The wound was never cleaned so it was as if they did nothing. I was sent home with a new cone and when I asked for help to put it on him since I was holding him on one hand and paper work on the other, she explained it’s Velcro and it’s easy, I can put it on later so just to keep the current blood covered cone on for the car ride. This is unacceptable. Overwhelmed I left. During the ride, he showed signs of discomfort, getting up I saw pools of blood. I called back immediately for help and was told they would call me back. After an hour, I called back and they explained due to emergencies, they haven’t been able to call me however I should bring him back if he’s bleeding which takes me back to the original appointment in the morning. I said I would wait till the call back from here, since I do not want to experience the same scenario from this morning and put more trauma on my dying dog. The reason for this email is to share my experience. Hopefully get some insight as to why this is your procedure for this particular moment and hopefully this engagement could change something. I was admitted at 11:13AM, left about 1:15 and currently emailing you at 3:15, with no call back still.. update 4:15PM, I gave up.... no call back no point. Dog is still bleeding, I’m still “dealing with it”. I don’t expect to come back. Emergency or not. I will highly advise against it if it’s the same experience.”

I STRONGLY URGE anyone considering bringing their pet to NC State Veterinary hospital to reconsider. My experience with them was beyond horrific and my only desire is prevent others from having to go through a similar affair. I will always regret that the last few hours of my horse's life were spent in their care. My horse was brought to them due to colic. I was displeased with the the staff and felt they did not fully explain what they were doing for him and I had to continually ask for explanations as to what steps they were taking and received curt responses. Then once he had been placed in a stall and administered drugs the vets told me I had to leave the facility despite his critical and concerning condition. Calls were made to request that I be able to stay and see my horse and denied. I was told I could wait in the lobby which was far removed from where my horse was and was not able to see him. I informed the staff that I would be in my car in the parking lot. I stayed there the entire night and did not receive any information on my horse and was not able to see him. Around 5 A.M multiple calls were made to check his condition and answered by a vet tech who did not provide any information (she refused to even tell us if he was in stable condition or not), yet said the vet would return my call shortly. AN HOUR LATER- the vet returned my call and told me that they did not have any definitive information but said that she would not be able to keep me updated on his condition nor could I see him until more tests were performed. I understood that further testing would take awhile and decided to return to my apartment which was a half hour away to change since she impressed upon me that it would be long before I could see my horse. A half hour later when I arrived at my apartment I got the call that they have decided that he was not going to survive and said I could now see him. Infuriated that they did not communicate properly I rushed back to the hospital. When I was approximately 15 minutes away the vet called asking how far away I was- at this point I asked if he was in distress and she told me he was not (which I truly believe to be a lie due to the condition he was in when I arrived). She called again when I was 8 minuets away and said to prepare myself for how he would look again failing to provide relevant information about his condition. When I got to the hospital I could not believe the state my horse was in. His stomach was swollen to horrific proportions, he had been drenched in ethanol, which they told me was because he developed a fever that I was not informed about until then. His eyes seemed engorged and he was shaking violently and his breathing was so labored I was disgusted. THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR ME NOT BEING ALLOWED TO SEE MY HORSE UNTIL HE WAS IN THIS CONDITION NOR ANY EXCUSE FOR THE VETS TO BE SO INCOMPETENT AT COMMUNICATING MY HORSE'S CONDITION THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT. When I arrived they said he had had a fever and they had performed an ultrasound and had seen fluid which lead them to believe his intestine had ruptured. NONE OF THE INFORMATION I RECEIVED WHEN I GOT TO THE FACILITY WAS GIVEN TO ME BEFOREHAND. They waited until he was in the most deplorable condition to allow me in and to update me. When I got there I rushed to my horse to pet him and instead of allowing me to comfort my horse the vet immediately began to harass me about needing to sign for and perform his euthanization. Instead of allowing me proper time to privately say goodbye to my horse, a crowd of about three people hovered around either in his stall or in the doorway. With no prior information they immediately asked me to decide what to do with his remains without being given options to think about beforehand. I feel his euthanization was rushed and that I was deprived of the opportunity to say goodbye properly to my beloved horse. As we have had to hospitalize this horse before elsewhere we know what good care and good communication look like, I confidently feel both things were absent from NC State Veterinary hospital.

The Emergency Dept. of the veterinary hospital was recommended to me by a family friend. I was thoroughly impressed by the level of compassion and competence exhibited by the medical staff. They were able to quickly diagnose what was wrong with my boy, and advised me on all possible courses of action. Two other vets had been unable to do so. Ultimately, there was nothing that could be done that wouldn’t prolong the misery of my dog, but I was able to confidently make a very difficult decision because I believed they had provided the highest possible level of care for me and my boy. I highly recommend this hospital. A trip here will not be inexpensive, but it is well worth the expense.

I've waited a few months to post this since I was extremely emotional after losing my pup and reflecting on anything regarding his care was too difficult, so I wanted to now take the time to review the great folks at NC State Veterinary School (emergency and critical care, as well as the social work department). Without getting too far into the details, note that my boy was very ill. Being a senior, and ill, I was distraught with making sure he get help. We had already been to both VSH-Raleigh and VSH-Cary and after spending a s*it- ton of money, because obviously that's what you do when your pup is your child, he was worse, and they discharged him to go home with me as if it would all just work out (both VSH Cary and raleigh location are in separate reviews) but I digress.... He worsened as soon as we got home from VSH and they didn't want to help anymore, so we opted for NC State vet school. When I arrived at NC State Vet School (from now on referred to as NCSVS) I immediately felt at ease as they triaged him and got to it to make him feel better. I know we were in great hands and regretted not going to NCSVS first. The entire care process was critical, heartwrenching, but also professional and top quality. This place, since it is a vet school, they have access to so much research and testing that no other vet emergency facility in the state has. I felt that my boy had nothing but the best offered to him. All of the doctors, residents, and staff were so supportive and since I was there so much during his care, knew me by name and all would tell me updates as I walked in the door. Their level of care superceded my expectations, and anything I had experienced before. Unfortunately, my boy took a drastic turn for the worse during his illness, and I utilized the services of NCSVS for his passing. Again, no deets as it's too difficult, but they seemed to be as heartbroken as I was, yet professional and sympathetic to the unbearable pain it is to lose a loved pet. They abided by my wishes of his passing, and did some things that I asked that were perhaps unorthodox for them, but I didn't want his passing to be in a sterile environment, so I'm grateful they helped us through all of that. NCSVS also offers grief counseling and therapy sessions through a human - animal behavior specialist, Jeannine Moga. I utilized this service, and was so grateful that this was an option for me. There is just no way to state how wonderful these people are. From the front desk, the vet staff, residents, assistant, even the accounts payable - they just all seem to really care about you and your pet. So, why the 4 stars? The only reason, though it was huge to me, was that after my boy's passing, I received a call from a female (assuming a student) asking how Pharrell was doing. (Pharrell was my boy's name). I was gutted since the wound was so raw. I couldn't even imagine how this could happen. I kindly informed her that he had passed away, and that she needed to update her records. I told the staff what happened, they were apologetic, but it is something that is terrible after being in such a terrible situation with losing your furbaby. I worry they have students just go off of a list and call to check on pets who are not there when this should be done by someone on the care team who knew what was going on. The ending is, if I need extended testing, or critical care for another pet, I will always go to NCSVS for treatment. I recommend them to every pet parent I know, even though I am no longer directly in the pet industry, from one pet parent to another, don't hesitate to use their services should you ever need them.

Our recent experience with the NC State Veterinary Hospital was horrible and resulted in the death of our dog. Our dog was being treated there from October 2017-February 2018 for cancer. She had a tumor removed and then had radiation treatment. The cancer treatments were successful and she was expected to make a full recovery. However, a couple weeks after radiation ended she started limping and had horrible pain in her back legs. We admitted her to the hospital at the end of Feb. 2018. She was there for 5 days and looked at by several departments. They told us she had sciatic nerve pain and sent us home with pain medications. A week later when she hadn’t improved and could not even stand up, we took her back to the hospital. They had misdiagnosed her. She did not have sciatic nerve pain but instead had contracted a MRSA Superbug. The infection was lodged in her spine. Our personal vet (who has 30+ years experience) told us that she almost certainly contracted the infection at the hospital during her cancer treatment. In light of this, we asked the hospital to please help us cover a small portion of the bills. At this point we had already spent about $20,000 on the cancer treatment and were only asking for them to comp some of the exam fees (about $2,000). We requested multiple times to speak to either the Hospital Administrator (Jim Brawley) or the Associate Dean (Dr. Steven Marks) regarding this matter. Neither of them contacted us. Instead, they sent one of their subordinates to call us. She told us to put our complaint in writing, so we sent them a certified letter asking for this small financial help. We asked her 2 times on the phone to please have one of them contact us. They never did. The infection was ultimately untreatable and we had to euthanize our dog. The hospital administrator did not call us back until 1 week after we had to put our dog to sleep. This was 1 week after he received the certified letter – probably the only reason he called. He was cold and curt on the phone and did not even offer condolences for the loss of our dog. He simply stated the hospital was conducting an investigation and we would hear back in 1-2 weeks. He also said he’d place a hold on our account and we would not receive any more bills until the investigation was complete. Two weeks later we had heard nothing back, but we did get a bill in the mail for $3400. A week after that, we got a letter in the mail from the hospital administrator stating they were not reimbursing us anything and that we needed to pay the final $3400 bill in full. In their letter, they kept denying our dog contracted the Superbug at their hospital. Our dog had only been to NCSU vet hospital during her treatments and not been to a dog park, boarded, or on any off-leash walks in the months leading up to her death. These facts strongly suggest the infection was hospital-borne. The hospital administration is cold, callous, and unwilling to work with clients and only care about the bottom dollar. To this day, the Associate Dean, who we specifically asked to speak to, still has not contacted us. The only contact with the Hospital Administrator was a cold, 2 minute phone call. They went 3 weeks without taking so much as 5 minutes to give us an update on the investigation, but they did somehow find the time to send us a bill, even though they told us we would not receive a bill during this period. Please keep this in mind when deciding where to take your beloved pet for medical care. There are better and cheaper alternatives in the area.

$200 And No Treatment or Resolution We brought our pet in on a weekend as an emergency visit. She would not bear weight on one leg. They put her in a room, said she looked fine, did nothing more - no X-rays, tests, nothing and charged $200. She resumed limping when we left. I called back, reported this and was told to take her to her regular vet during office hours. Just out of curiosity before this whole no treatment for $200 experience I asked about rates for routine dental cleaning the quote was $800 for one pet. I called 8 other vet clinics to get an idea of the going rate. Same procedure and precautions - $200 - $500. I'm not paying a student $600 more to do the same procedure an experienced, qualified veterinary doctor can do. I cannot believe the number of positive reviews.

Brought my dog in because he has some discharge around his eye and seemed uncomfortable. Was told 180 to clean his and some eye drops for his eye, paid it on the spot. 3 weeks go by and I get a letter saying I owe 90 more dollars for just the eye drops. Why didn’t they charge me right there when they gave me the eye drops? There is poor execution and customer service. I feel finessed, bamboozled, and lied to. The doctors were nice though, but still would not recommended because now I’m afraid I’ll get another bill.

I have been using this hospital for several years and I can honestly say that I have never been disappointed with their knowledge, treatment, or compassion for my dogs. These doctors allow me to be proactive with health testing and everyday care. They handle the simplest to the most complex of issues. Don't hesitate to seek help here. Your pet is worth it.
