REVIEWS OF St. Marks Veterinary Hospital IN New York

The vet, vet techs and all staff were kind, knowledgeable, and took time to explain everything to me thoroughly and answer all my questions. They are also kind to each other - a great sign. Every interaction I have with them is easy and reassuring. The fees are definitely higher than other vets in the area but it's worth it to get quality and thoughtful care for my dog. This is the quintessential example of "you get what you pay for"!

great doctor and staff. They escorted Harley for her last night kindly

My mother in law had a horrible experience here earlier today! She called the clinic and made an appointment to euthanize her cat. She was given a price of $200(for euthanization and to leave the cat in the clinic. Leaving the cat there after the procedure was emphasized very strongly and agreed upon). When she came there, they attempted to charge her an extra $90 for storing the cat after. The original price was $200. Now they wanted a total of $290. My mother-in-law got frustrated about being lied to, so she asked for a refund and her cat back alive. Until this moment, they still haven't euthanized. They stalled her for a few minutes while euthanizing the cat in the other room even though they were asked not to. They brought the cat back to her, dead, in a box and still tried to charge the extra $90 for storage! To euthanize your pet is an emotionally difficult thing to do. But these people don't care. It's all about the money for them. This is an 80 year old lady with high blood pressure, and they decided to play games, lie and drive her crazy for an extra $90. Who gives somebody a dead cat in a box, and says "here take it", especially 1. After being told that she'd rather go somewhere else and 2. After quoting that the cat will be stored at the clinic after. Stay away from these people; they don't care about you or your pet. They are willing to put you through hell for an extra dollar. I would give zero stars if I could.

My dog had lymphoma and unfortunately his cancer progressed really quickly. His normal vet was closed for a few days so I had to take a chance with St Marks, they got me in the same day. Unfortunately Henry had to cross the rainbow bridge but everyone was sooo lovely. From the front desk, to the vet tech. Dr. McLaughlin took care of us. She was so sweet, patient and understanding. She took her time, explained everything and continuously apologized for our loss. I had never been in the situation prior so she made it a little more comforting. I highly recommend STVH. Thanks again!

My wife and I have a Senegal Parrot who we had never taken to a vet before but since he starting having a smelly case of diarrhea we we're looking for places we could take him too. We live in the East village and all the Avian specific vets are either in the upper east or west sides of the city so we were a little hesitant at first but took the chance and we're happy we did. We we're quite pleased with the care and responsiveness at St. Marks Vet. Doctor Barth examined our bird and thoroughly explained how we can move forward and gave us cost breakdowns as well. The nurse/assistant handled our otherwise sometimes hard-to-handle bird surprisingly comfortably. All the tests came clear and the doctor called herself to discuss options. Currently we're on an antibiotic dose, which seems to be helping.

My Jenday Conure was treated for lead poisoning by DVM. Mihoko Seki. She was extremely nice, knowledgeable, and caring. Spend good quality of time listening to my concernes and slowly went over treatment plan while answering all my questions. My bird stayed in hospital for 5 days and each day she would call me to give updates on his health. Mango and I are extremely happy with treatment and we would like to say huge THANK YOU.

Been there three times during the last eight years. Yup, it's expensive, and my cat really hates going to the vet (or anywhere, for that matter), but Dr Ratcliff and his team most likely saved Scratchie's life. Everyone was friendly and helpful. They gave me good advice for home care, and written instructions so I don't forget. I'm always amazed how well behaved my usually rather peculiar and slightly grumpy cat is when I take him here.

Money hungry. Owner doesn't care about your pets health or comfort. She doesn’t even listen. Every animal is unique and every pet owner knows their kids better than anyone. Hold your ground and don’t let them take advantage of you. Most testing is just to get the bill up. Also, the newer Vet has the loudest voice-I wish someone at the practice would ask her to stop. It’s rude to yell all day. I could hear each of her appointments from the waiting area. Inside voices, please ask her to be aware. It’s egotistical to speak louder than everyone else. She literally yelled thru my appointment. That said, there are some very good vets here. My pets will continue to come for the location and those few kind vets. Reception is excellent.

Very disappointed in the declining quality of service. Constantly rotating doctors. Ridiculous lab charges. Office is dirty. If I had to do it all over again I would go elsewhere. My favorite Dr (Dr Rendon) left and I should have gone with her...

I took my Syrian hamster here recently and the entire staff was very friendly and efficient. Dr. Barth was especially kind, gentle, and knowledgeable. Will absolutely recommend and return again!

St. Mark's Veterinary Hospital is not to be trusted! If you want top quality care then look elsewhere. This practice lacks authentic compassion, the competence and skill expected of their professionalism and the complete quality of integrity. Rather than look at the problem directly the vets here sell you unnecessary services scaring you into thinking something more is wrong with your pet than what is. That was my first round of experiences with this practice. Secondly, the majority of my visits to St. Marks Vet have purely been to obtain necessary requirements and paperwork for my pet to travel abroad. On a few occasions before a trip, mistakes were spotted in paperwork which meant I had to go to and from the clinic before paperwork was deemed fit to be authenticated. To make matters worse, it was only on my last trip and when I arrived in the UK that we were told that the rabies shot administered was invalid as the vet did not administer the follow up booster which is actually what makes the rabies vaccine valid and recognised. Due to the negligence of this practice, our beloved dog now sits in quarantine for 21 days despite additional tests and paperwork that prove him to be rabies free. Yes, I should have gone to a different vet when the signs were showing. But I didn't. These errors should not have been overlooked by the vet especially when they have been called on to issue several health certificates to travel yet they failed to spot their own mistake each and every time. And that counts three different vets who have been called upon to make sure my pet's travel and health requirements are met accordingly. Having trusted the vet in this knowledge and service, we feel completely let down. To make matter's worse, Dr Haddock "accepts no responsibility". SHAME ON THIS PRACTICE AND THEIR VETS.

We have been going to St. Marks Vets for almost 20 years. We live on the Upper East Side and continue to schlep downtown to bring our animals (2 cats and a dog) to Dr. Haddock and her team. We tried other places and nothing compares. They have always been super attentive to us and our animals, always find time to schedule a visit or speak by phone, and demonstrate a true passion for their work. From the moment we walk in the door, there is a great community of people who care about their patients and the work they do. I think they are one of the best in the City hands down!

I needed a house visit for my older cat (who HATED going to the vet), and I was shocked at how well the tech handled my rather shy/violent cat. Very gentle, very reassuring. Sadly, we had to put my kitty down just a few days later, and the staff was unbelievably kind and compassionate during what was a very emotional time. The vet even indulged me over the phone, answering all the questions post-procedure that had been floating in my mind. Could not recommend enough!! These are the people you want keeping an eye on your furry/feathered/scaly friends ❤

I'm not one to ever post reviews, but I will when it comes to my dog. I came in for my dog's annual and we were with Dr. McLaughlin. She was not friendly at all and was not telling me what she was doing. I'm used to being in the room with my dog when she's getting shots, but she took her back and wasn't informing me of anything. I had to ask her when they were bringing her up and what they were doing. She was just overall really cold towards me and seemed like she didn't care. Also a little condescending. I'm giving three stars because everyone else there was SO friendly and caring. When I was waiting at the front, Dr. Haddock (the owner) walked a dog she was with to the front and was so friendly and kind to the dog and her owner and was walking her through her appointment and gave the dog treats. Dr. McLaughlin did not do that. In fact, the vet tech walked her up and apologized because my dog was just laying in the back and was supposed to be back up with me. If I go back, I'll specifically ask for Dr. Haddock instead. It's so important to feel comfortable with who is caring for your child. I mean pet.

I have been a client of St. Marks for years. I found out about the hospital after rescuing "exotic" pets (anything other than dogs or cats) which St. Marks tends to. I have met most if not all of the wonderful and clearly animal loving dr's, techs, asst's, and front desk personnel and all are kind and sincere. I thought the care went beyond routine and decided to move my 2 dogs over as well. I cannot say enough positive things about St. Marks. The doctors are A+ and will work out treatments and health plans without pressure. Suggestions made without making me feel like a bad "mom". The front desk will accomodate as best possible and acknowledge not only me, but mostly my pets. People that complain about the pricing simply are not from NYC or dont mind horrendous wait times in factory clinics without exceptional service. If i could give SMVH 10 stars, I would. Love love love them

Nice vets! And awesome people there! They really care about pets here!

These people are very nice and very caring for your pet. Some procedure like surgery can have astronomical cost associated with them, this is the only downside. So be prepared to get great care for your pet, while getting hit deep in your wallet!

This practice is comprised of a very competent group of Vets, the staff is extremely friendly and caring and they do operate 7 days a week and I have always been able to get in to see a vet on the same day if it is a pressing matter. However some of the Vets do in my opinion over react and suggest too many costly tests and procedures when diagnosing. However, if you want the services of an experienced, competent practitioner and avoid the unnecessary procedures and charges they always seem to want to order, then be sure you specifically ask your appointment be made with Dr. Charisse Luk. She is kind, friendly, but professional, never put s you in a panic and always takes extra time for any questions you might have. Most importantly she looks for the simple issues first and not devastating 1 % possibilities. She is the type of doctor that takes one step at a time until it is figured out. That makes their charges fairer but yes they still charge something like 10-25% more than most other vets in the neighborhood for the same services. However none of the smaller local vets operate 7 days a week, 12 hours weekdays and 8 hours on weekends and have wonderful connections and referral services to other local practitioners should you have a 2 AM in the morning emergency. But should Dr. Luk decide to practice elsewhere in Manhattan, I would follow her.

Great vet to go to put a little on the expensive sign and unfortunately did not make follow-up calls to see how my pet was

I've been there with two different cats 3 or 4 times. The staff and the doctors are very friendly and courteous. They never rushed me, always taking as much time as I needed to talk to me and give me options. Every time I visited the clinic, they called the next day (or two days later) to follow-up on my pet's condition. They are also open later than any other Vet clinic in the area, which makes them the most convenient vet clinic, especially for those who have regularly scheduled jobs. And a quick response to Gillian Wilkins very negative review. I don't want to doubt your experience, however, my experience was completely the opposite. Once I did the first round of vaccinations for my new kitten, I received a postcard in the mail reminding me to bring the kitten back for the second shot.

If you have a reptile, please don't come here , they kill people's pets. KEEP AWAY!!! Dr. Stevenson and All of there other doctors are fraud.

TERRIBLE VET! We took our little dog here and they gave us antibiotics for an anal gland blowout. when we got home the vial had been opened and spilled out into the bag! There was less than half left of what we paid $80 for! So my husband took it back and the vet gave him something different. There was no problem at all. BUT when we tried to make a subsequent appointment for all of our little dogs annual vaccinations, we were told that we no longer being accepted by this vet or clinic because of the "situation" with the medicine!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you kidding me???? WTH? The vet isn't that good in any case we only went here because it was cost effective with 3 dogs to take care of. They didn't offer a package price or anything for having more than one animal with them - and their prices kept increasing. So it wasn't any savings for us in the long run anyway. I wouldn't go back here if they were the last vets in the city. And we DEFINITELY will never recommended this place or the vet Dr. Babwabwey or whatever his name is, to anyone we know or on our social media.

HORRIBLE VETS !! DONT WASTE YOUR PETS LIFE THERE!! KEEP AWAY!!

They helped me with my snake when he got scale burn from the heat mat. It was really bad and he had dried up blood on 3/4 of his underbelly and plus he was in shed so that didn't help. But they cook very good care of my snake and cleaned him up for me, instructed me how to apply and ointment they medicated and demonstrated how to give him his liquid medication orally. Went for bi weekly check ups and he was doing much better after my third check up he was pretty much back to normal.

Throughout my time with my French bulldog Napoleon, I received nothing but the best care from the staff at St. Marks Veterinary Hospital. He was treated as part of their family. I have to acknowledge Christine and Michelle, who loved Napoleon almost as much as my husband and I. They were always welcoming and professional. From what I observed with all the clients that came through the Hospital’s doors everyone was treated with care and respect. I recently lost my Napoleon, but I would absolutely not hesitate to use the services of St. Marks Veterinary Hospital in the future. I hold Dr. Haddock and all the staff in the highest regard, and my husband and I thank them for everything they did for us, and Napoleon.

I have been a client at St. Marks Vet since 1998, and this review is long overdue. While I feel the veterinary care has been good, the practice itself usually feels greedy... to the point of predatory, and it can be difficult to separate the warmth of quality of care from the feeling of a hand sliding into your back pocket. As is the consensus in many reviews below, Dr. Dimeola is amazing. I love her. I think she is truly a wonderful and caring vet, and great at what she does. I have recommended several friends to her. Unfortunately, the practice not so much. Through the years there have been double-billed medical tests (by their own admission and later removed from the bill when my partner, a nurse, pointed out that several tests were included under multiple names). Last week we requested one generic blood pressure pill (nineteen cents online), and was sent home with, and billed for, six brand-name pills at seven dollars apiece. No explanation for the change until I spoke to the front desk, then the office manager, and finally the practice owner, Dr. Haddock, who agreed to refund the money when I returned the pills I didn't order (and which the sign in the lobby clearly states cannot be returned, in compliance with NYS law). That should have been my last visit. Today I had a "medical waste surcharge fee" for the disposal of a needle from an injection. I'm mad at myself for letting them do it to me again, and so the review. You can do better.

I unfortunately had to help my beloved pet rattie cross the rainbow bridge but my normal vet was unable to fit me in for over two weeks. Luckily St Marks was willing to take me ASAP and I’m so glad they did. Dr Haddock was so sweet to my rat and made a difficult experience as positive as it could be.

Teal Malia

Had my bird board here on numerous occasions and for health checkups dealt directly with the avian vet, Dr. Haddock and a vet tech, Jake. Jake is an incredible vet tech, he's very thorough and detail-oriented, in addition to having a keen psychological understanding of both animals and people. Dr. Haddock is an awesome avian vet, my bird absolutely loves her. The staff here are very kind and I feel safe having my bird board while I'm traveling.

They are crooks first then vets. The overcharging that goes on here is obscene and borderline criminal. Been here twice each time I was presented with unnecessary charges and tests not associated with the reason for the visit. Be warned this place will try and bleed you dry as they pretend to care for animals. Can't stress this enough DO NOT GO HERE!

Awsome service. The staff is amazing and the Dr was caring and took the time to explain what was going on with our kitty. We would recommend this office for anyone with a pet.

First off, I must say that Dr. Mcbean is the best!! She's very professional and very caring. She took care of Molly (Chihuahua) very well as if she was caring for her own. The clinic is clean and the staff is very kind and professional as well. Had to stay a little bit longer (10PM) due to a procedure they did on Molly and Dr. Mcbean and staff didn't seem to mind at all. They assured me that everything would be fine and it was. Thank you so much for caring for my Molly.
