This place used to be my go to with my dog ever since he was a puppy. I’m not one to totally blast a place with a bad review but I’ll voice my opinion. Taking your dog to a place like this is emotionally stressful for him. As for Abernathy I’m not sure if he was having a bad day or his ego got too high but for him to say we need to have better control of our dog, When he’s the one that was allowing another dog to come out the room but it’s our fault? I’m glad i don’t have to deal with him. He may be good with dogs but his people skills are pretty trashy. Usually we have a good visit but i might considering going elsewhere. The person that looked at my dog was supposed to give us instructions on what we need to give my dog which she did but nothing about how much to give him. Overall this was an awful experience

I've been going to Dr. Abernathy since the Mid 1990's. I have always recommended this place, and sent this place many referrals over the years. The management of the veterinary practice itself has gone "Downhill" over the last couple of years. Long waits, poor communication, uncaring front desk staff, and now customers are NOT able to speak directly to the staff when you call. I don't like seeing any business decline like this one, but this one has gone downhill. Also, Dr. Abernathy and/or his staff are now "firing" or "removing" clients from their database. You may say "that would never happen"? I've seen it happen first hand. Don't question anything with this vet or become emotional in the event of an emergency, or you risk being let go as a customer. Strange but true, and other reviews corroborate this situation. PS: In talking to a local vet tech here in town at a different Vet office, I was told that Sunrise has a reputation now for "firing" people, and that a lot of this other vets new customers are transfers from Sunrise after being "Let go" from Sunrise. Here were the reasons: Sunrise felt the customer got too emotional during a call, the customer went to a different vet while still having records at Sunrise(even if it was just for shots), or the customer asked too many questions about Dr. Abernathy's diagnosis. I was a loyal customer at one time, but obviously not anymore. I don't recommend Sunrise Vet any longer.

I love Sunrise Veterinary Clinic and highly recommend this place if you are looking for exceptional care of your fur babies. Dr. George Abernathy in my opinion is the best. Not that I have had much experience with vets but this man is one amazing human being. He works a ridiculous amount of hours and is so dedicated to our pets. He is not a Spring chicken( no disrespect intended) and all weekend I went to visit my pet this man is there hands on. He has a caring staff too!

I took my rabbit in to get an exam because of the odd amount of feces around his butt and Dr.Abernathy said it was nothing internally, it was only a small cut on the end of my rabbits tail. He charged me over $200 for x-rays and everything. I was sent home with my rabbit and I checked on his butt again a few days after the appointment only to find that my rabbit was being eaten from the inside out by maggots. I had to put my rabbit down because of the unimaginable pain he must have been in all because the doctor didn't do his job. Not to mention that he was literally falling asleep while I was mid conversation with him. TERRIBLE. I would give zero stars if I could.

My dogs and cats were one of the first patients of Dr Abernathy's back in the 90's when he first opened up his practice. I was happy to find such a caring vet. Unfortunately, things went downhill quickly. I was one of the first clients to get "fired". I think back and realize that maybe a few of our pets were mishandled by this office. They have always had a very rude staff. And God forbid if you voice that to Dr Abernathy. The straw that broke the camel's back was when I took my seriously ill cat to be looked at. He had a lump on his neck. When I got to the office there was a 2 hour wait. We sat there waiting and I held my very sick cat in my arms the whole time without them realizing the seriousness of the situation. In fact, the girl that was working the desk proceeded to sweep the waiting room and pushed the broom under my feet without saying a word and acted like I was a nuisance at that point. We were the last ones there.When I got to see Dr Abernathy, he examined my cat and said that it could be an abcess or Cancer and that was it. I waited over 2 hours for him to tell me that. He never offered treatment or diagnostic tests...he wanted to go home. We truly were a nuisance at that point. He could tell I was upset and promptly told me to never return to his office. I requested ALL my records on the spot. I took my cat to another vet (Petroglyph) and it is here where they diagnosed him with Cancer. We put him to sleep a week later after feeling better but for a few days but it was short lived . Please use extreme discretion if you use Dr Abernathy. And if you want treatment, DO NOT complain or mention his rude staff. He will get rid of you fast no matter how ill your pet is. HORRIBLE VET HORRIBLE PLACE

When we moved to the West side of Albuquerque I researched the veterinary clinics in the area. Sunrise Veterinary Clinic is 20 minutes from our home, but worth the drive. The doctors and staff are very thorough and professional. It is easy to get an appointment and pick up medication for my dog. When I found a stray on the side of the interstate and brought him in to be neutered they kept him overnight and per their policy gave him pain medication afterwards. The last time I had that type of experience with a Vet was in the 1980's! Everyone I have encountered there has interacted with my pets in a caring and attentive manner.

Unfortunately, I have had nothing but bad service at this place. We took our dog in as he was in extreme pain and was turned away AND he's been a patient of Sunrise for over 10 years!!! If a vet takes on so many patients for money's sake and leaves no room for animals that are in need of urgent care, then they will never be a place that I would recommend. Shame on them. You would think a complete office caring for animals would have some compassion. They saw the agony in my pet's eyes and had no compassion. I am disgusted. You should take your animals to a place that at least cares. My review should show 0 stars, but I had to pick 1.

I had to get my dog, Rocco, into see the vet. He had developed an ear infection in spite of my best efforts to keep his ears cleaned. Dr. Powers and everyone else there was just terrific. The big guy wouldn't let the Dr. thoroughly examine his ears, and she wasn't able to see all the way down to the eardrum, because he wouldn't hold still for it. We discussed the options and the possible risks, (Rocco is getting up there) and decided to dope him up so that we could make sure no foreign objects had become lodged in his ear canal. Luckily, it has turned out to be a simple infection. Everyone in the office was very kind and helpful and once again, Rocco and I are very glad that we are seeing the good folks at Sunrise. I started going there while I was staying in Rio Rancho, but knowing what good care my dog gets at Sunshine definitely makes the drive from Barelas worth it. I can't recommend them highly enough.

When my 14 year old lab mix started showing signs of vestibular disorder they took him in without hesitation and let me do a payment plan. Dr. Abernathy is an amazing man. When my dog was a baby she got really sick, we took her to Sunrise. She almost died. I found out the the doctor had stayed with her all night and got her better. Later in her life she began getting seizures, again my baby was shown so much care and compassion by Dr. Abernathy. She had got to a point where she was so sick there was nothing more that could be done for her. Dr. Abernathy was kind and his staff were so caring and kind to me and my family when we had to let go. I feel this is one of the few places that are not completely focused on how much money they can get out of you. This Doctor has a real love for animals, and his staff are amazing.

Nobody wants to find out that their sweet little pocket dog needs to go under the knife for a $1200 procedure, but we couldn't leave her be as a tripod with a busted back leg. When Radar Love turned up with a torn ligament that could only be repaired with surgery, our regular vet immediately referred us to Dr. Abernathy. The expert team of vet techs worked quickly to put us on the emergency schedule for Friday evening (with $100 up charge), and treated us kindly and professionally during every interaction. The clinic was very busy, but was kept neat and clean for a relatively comfortable sit in the spacious waiting room. They encouraged us to visit with our sweet pup at anytime over the weekend during her recovery to ease our angst about the overnight stay, which we did after she came out of anesthesia on Saturday morning. We met with Dr. Abernathy on Sunday morning when we anxiously came to take our tiny mended terrier home, and he took all the time in the world to answer our questions about the surgery and get to know more about our little furry family. Although the good doc doesn't seem to sit still very long and runs a tight practice, he was genuinely concerned for the well-being of both his patients and their people. After several bad experiences with nonchalant vets and money-hungry clinics, we were very pleased to have the opportunity to work with the well-respected Dr. Abernathy and his established team at Sunrise Veterinary Clinic.

Sunrise is a full service Veterinary Clinic with lab, x-ray and surgery facilities. Over the years my dogs have needed all these services. And they're provided at a fair cost. We've been with Dr. Abernathy and his staff for 20 years. He is the best vetenernarian I believe in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho. Their staff is amazing. He is very busy because he is in big demand, but its worth the wait. He treats a variety of animals, dogs, cats, birds, police dogs, turtles, and other varieties. His knowledge of animals is remarkable. Since our last visit our fur baby has had many seizure, Dr. Abernathy has given her the best quality of life. She is happy, healthy and thriving. His clinic is very busy, He is a very high quality vetenernarian. Please be patient while waiting. It does take time, but when its your turn its worth the wait. He's through, patient, and knowledgeable. When you walk in, sign your pet in, and have a seat. If you have a question, just ask. They are very busy and helping other people. They are also willing to help with any question you might have. He's taken care of my parents animals, my sister and bother-in-laws animals, our entire family. All the Veterinarian at Sun Rise are very knowledgeable and super nice, you want be disappointed.

My experience with Sunrise Vet Clinic is an on-going one for the past 14+ years. Sunrise has been and continues to be one of the best Vet Clinics in New Mexico. The staff are compassionate people who get to know you and your animals, are always helpful and wonderful folks to work with. My primary Vet, Dr. Abernathy, is one of the best Vets in New Mexico and the other Vets at the Clinic are great people as I've interacted with them also when Dr. Abernathy wasn't available. I have had a number of animals over the years and everyone has had excellent care at this Clinic. Dr. Abernathy is a miracle worker for me and my pets; from dogs to cats and even a turtle, he has treated everyone of them and continues to this day. I've never seen a person so dedicated to his profession, so down to earth, honest, direct, a family man, compassionate (especially when hard decisions need to be made); I just hope and pray he doesn't retire anytime soon. Is it a little hard when calling, sometimes, but that is because so many people are calling (it's a popular place!) but they give you the option of holding on or getting your phone number and they call you back that day to help you. Can there be a bit of a wait for an appt? Of course, because so many people go there! If you have an emergency and are a regular client, can they get you in quickly? Absolutely! I honestly don't know if any of them sleep...they seem to be there all the time taking care of the animals in their care! And I tell you, you just can't beat the low fees/prices at this clinic. I don't know how they do it. 14+ years of experience going to this clinic should tell you something about this place and I will continue having Sunrise Vet Clinic as My Vet Clinic and Dr. Abernathy as my Vet.

Cannot say enough good things about Sunrise!! Dr. Abernathy was fantastic! Took my small dog Bella to a different vet and they wanted to charge $900 to remove a so called abscessed tooth!! I was not happy at all with this price, so I called Sunrise and I am so glad I did. I made Bella an emergency vet visit and Dr. Abernathy was able to see Bella later that night. Turns out Bella did NOT have an abscessed tooth but she had 7 goat heads caught into between her gum and cheek which caused a massive infection. Dr. Abernathy removed the goat heads and even saved them to show us them!! He called them graspers. I should have taken a picture but didn't. Anwyays....Bella is feeling much better!! Thank you so much Sunrise and Dr. Abernathy!! We will also use Sunrise

We were loyal clients of Sunrise until last spring. I called them to say that my standard poodle was not able to get to her feet and was in pain and could I bring her in for euthanasia (she had been going downhill for a couple of weeks). The office staff member told me I could "drop her off at 6pm". That was such a horrible response! I found another vet who could see her right away and who was compassionate. So I wrote a negative review of the clinic - saying that the doctors were excellent but that the staff were terrible. Today, nearly a year later, I decided that I'd give them another chance, so I called to make an appointment. I got a voice mail telling me that I could no longer come to their clinic! It seems to me that the appropriate response would have been to apologize for the previous response and work with the staff to improve.

I had high hopes for this place because they came highly recommended. That was short lived after the doc wrote off my dog as just getting old and having heart failure. Long story short, he over prescribed the wrong meds and almost killed him. The worst of it was that after the mistake was realized, there was no apology and he had the nerve to charge me $300 more for the tests and treatment needed to help my dog survive. I went for a second opinion to 4 Paws in ABQ and it turned out he just had a throat infection from allergies!!! I don't really ĺike to leave bad reviews but considering the seriousness of the incident, I felt it nessessary. Many people seem to have had positive experiences here but please be cautious. My little dude is back to normal happy life now but no thanks to this place.

Took great care of our little shadow . He got really sick and they had him stay over night . Fixed him up after the proper meds hes been great ever since. Really happy with service from doctor explained everything very well. Only thing I would recommend is a little better check in process . Took a long time for someone to acknowledge me as I stood right in front of them at the desk. At least a " hello we will be right with you" nothing too much to ask for .other than that great place and fair prices as well !

We keep returning to Sunrise Veterinary Clinic because of their dedication and concern for the four legged members of our family. You may have a wait, even with an appointment, but as soon as your pets are seen, you understand why. There is friendly, unhurried interaction with the staff, your vet will answer all your questions and will research anything you ask that could possible stump them. Premium care for your beloved pet is their primary concern, and they do it without premium prices. You might think you are only going in for vaccinations, but your pet will also receive a thorough exam, since maintaining your pet's peak health is the goal at Sunrise Veterinary Clinic. When a pet has reached the end of their health & pain free days, and it is necessary to make that agonizing decision for them, the vets at Sunrise are very caring and sensitive in helping ease them out of their pain. I've been taking my furry family members there for more than 20 years, occasionally I went somewhere else, and dissatisfied with the care at those places, I came back to Sunrise, I have no intention of going anywhere else while Sunrise is there for us.

Although it's always busy here, they work diligently to serve you as quickly as posible. Update 7/8/17 - our beagle unfortunately developed a very aggressive abdominal tumor that deteriorated her quality of life in less than a month. We cannot express how compassionate and professional the entire staff was today as we made the decision to euthanize our sweet Lucy. Thank you for making a heart breaking situation as tolerable as it could be. The financial aspect was also very honorable which helped us not be overly burdened.

It was our first time there, and we will never go back. The staff is cold and made me feel like a "number". I wasn't aware of the process and was not greeted by the girl pulling files or the staff going on and out of the front area. I waited 10 minutes before someone even acknowledged me. When I told him I had to put my pet down, he said, "OK sign in, and you'll be called". It was already a difficult decision, but it should've been handled completely different. It wasnt just routine shots or a check up and that's something that needs to be considered with each family.

So far the veterinary service at Sunrise has been good. My gripe is with the staff. Every time I call, they say "there are (#) of call(s) ahead of you, do you mind holding." When I was actually in the office, I saw them do this several times to callers and there were no other calls being handled. The first time I was there, I stood at the front desk, right in front of someone sitting in a chair and waited for any of the several staff members to acknowledge my arrival. I was ignored for five minutes until a new person showed up and asked if I had been helped. When I said no, I was asked to sign in and wait until someone called me up. Now really, couldn't the person sitting right in front of me had said, "Good morning" "How can I help you?" Something!!!! Finally, there were a number of staff sitting and standing around the front desk when it came time to check out and the Doctor had to intervene to get someone to help me. Considering I had just put my old dog to sleep, you think they could have been slightly attentive. Come on people. These are your customers. They are the reason you earn a wage. Show some attention. Even the people at the Quickie Mart say hello when I walk in.
