There's new Vet in town, and he is Fantastic! Dr. Cole Wenzel has established his large and small animal care practice in northern Luna County (about 3 mi. north of I-10 on the west side of Route 180). His love and up to date knowledge of animals is very evident.
His prices are a bit LOWER than the other 2 Vets in Luna County, so that is always a factor to consider, especially when you are a responsible multi-pet owner like me.
He is rotating weekends with Dr. Don Haines (Deming Animal Clinic) to provide emergency care; and I think this is Wonderful.
He communicates well, offering explanations with his recommendations; and always answers my questions.
He is involved with giving his time, recommendations and services to our local Spay & Neuter group DAG (Deming Animal Guardians) and their sister animal Rescue & Placement group (DAGSHIP).
So as a practitioner and person, Dr. Wenzel gets 5 stars. No, make that 10!
One star omitted due to the the following 2 things.
Very Small (7 x 10-ish feet?) check- in and pick-up front office area. Seats, about 6-7 total, are right next to each other and I foresee some dog/cat, dog/dog fights occurring due to this "way too close to each other" arrangement. It is impossible to speak with the receptionist (Rene', who sits behind a sliding glass window) without literally bumping into a person seated right there to the right of the window.
And, the only "Special Diets" foods that he is carrying is the "chemicals-filled with artificial everything" (IMO) Hill's Science Diet brand. That is SO 1970's.
There are many more established, reputable nutritional brands with products for animals with special dietary needs. That are grain-free and sourced from more natural products. (My Chihuahuas need this or their hair falls out.)
Whenever (in my past experiences), I have been prescribed a Hill's Science DIet product for a former pet's particular health condition, they absolutely Refused to eat it, unless I cooked chicken to mix into it to enhance it.
So, I will stick with what I believe are healthier choices of foods for my dogs (currently 4 Health's Salmon (found at Tractor Supply) or Activa (carried by Pet Barn) grain free and hope that Dr. Cole does some looking into stocking other brands that besides Hill's to recommend to his patients' owners as indicated.
If he carried more "Y2K+" brands, he could even start a club, something like "Buy 9, Get 10th Free"; or "Buy 9, We donate a bag to DAGSHIP Emergency Food Bank".
