I began receiving my care here in 2009 and have been ever since. I cannot say enough nice things about the staff and the care I receive. A big thank you to all the staff at the Harry S. Truman VA for getting me healthy and keeping me that way.

This VA hospital and clinic has saved my husband's life many times. I am so glad it is available.

Parker Rothweiler

This place is the absolute worst. I dont know if its because I am from a younger generation, but I expect a little more from a VA than I did from sick call. I have never got into an appointment in a timely manner. The least I have waited is a month, and when I went in for PTSD related issues I was offered an appointment 37 days from then. It appeared that I was an inconvenience because I got there at 4:10 and they close at 4:30. Wouldn't let me see a Dr. Nurse kept complaining that she was going to miss her bus. No Wonder The Veteran Suicide Rate is at 22 per day. You cant go to the VA for help. This is not the first time I have had issues. Have had a dr. refuse to see me because I was 5 minutes late due to construction on the VA having traffic stopped. I could see her in her office talking on the phone the entire hour I waited, only to have her come out and get her next patient and tell me that's what I get for being late. I was there for counseling. I have been to other VA clinics and had great experiences, rarely have I had a decent visit here. It appears that most of the staff is pissed off. I'm not ok with that. If you are not a pleasant person, don't work where you have to greet people. Customer service is horrible. I hate to lump them all together because I am sure that there are some great people that work here. As far as I am concerned, if you work in the mental health department and you ever act like you don't have time for someone, you should be fired immediately. 22 veterans a day.

My Husband has had the best care from this Hospital. The only complaint He and I have is their garage parking is horrible. You can find a place to park, just almost impossible to back out of the garage where you parked.. You have to back out, pull in, back out, pull in. Zig zag all over the place to get out holding a long line waiting to get by. I wished they would of left it the way it was or designed it better.

Gary Winter

I volunteer in transport and seen by physcian myself. 99 percent of patients say the staff are excellant. I always ask them when I transport them. The staff always treated me with respect. I have heard families asking about why cannot coordinate appointments. Staff try, but every clinic does not meet every day and sometimes full. Try to meet all town physicians on the same day. Practically impossible. Patients come well over 100 miles to come here, rather then go someplace closer.

Feb 14 2016, had a cardiac arrest induced on me plus a sexual assault at another hospital in mid Missouri reported this to my primary care physician gave the 86 pages of medical records from the other hospital as they told me to have my Dr. Review my records and set a plan of action for treatment and care. I thought. Health care providers were. Supposed to help vets not cover up criminal activies of their buddies at st Marys hospital in mexico no and Jefferson city mo. How dare these so called professionals be allowed to work for the va let alone any hospital why didn't they report and examine me for sexual assault contacted patient advocate on three different ocassions filed a complaint still no diagnosis st Marys says I have a heart condition 2nd degree kidney failure possible blood clots in my legs cranial nerve damage and who knows what and I'm with the white team I used to love this place but wow they sure put this gulf war vet in his place.

Traveled to Missouri last week to be with my dad. He ended up being admitted and I walked in to find him with blood soaked gauze in his right nostril. He had a swollen right leg and foot. They had started him on heparin when he is already on Plavix, another blood thinner. He had apparently suffered a spontaneous nose bleed that took all of that night, the next day and into the next morning to stop. The ENT ended up packing his nose 2 times. Imagine my surprise when they are telling him there is nothing that can be done that he needs a nursing home for his leg swelling. His leg is contracted they say. Only he was walking 2 days prior. Contractions take quite awhile to develop. The nurse then asked what had happened to make his leg swell, my dad replied that he had bumped his knee on his steering wheel adjustment. My jaw dropped, should they have asked before starting such a dangerous med on a patient who is already on one blood thinner. And should they x ray said leg? I guess not, imagine more surprise after massaging his knee and lower leg the swelling is fading fast. Down to just an area around his ankle and he was standing within the hour. Why then would they still be trying to put him in a nursing home after learning he had care at home and a daughter there that said she would take him home with her. They said he needed to remain in Missouri to see his heart team for outpatient tests, even though he lived here last summer and saw the team in Biloxi. It took many hours and several different staff members being told we aren’t nursing home ready yet to finally release him home with home health therapy. Now he is back and they say he needs his leg amputated for sores that can’t heal with his blood flow problems. Ok fine, but can we maybe put the stents in that he was told he needed a year ago when his heart stents were placed? The sores they speak of were not present last week and the nurse says they are small and not open yet. Why amputate the leg of a man who most likely would not survive surgery due to his heart condition and bleeding risk. I will let you know when I do. His family wasn’t called, we are on the list. Neither time. And the vascular team isn’t returning a call. We have informed nurse and dad to deny surgical consent. I’m praying they don’t take him back at 730 am when we haven’t asked why they are skipping the stents that are scheduled for the 27th and jumping to amputate. Waiting on the dr to call. Will update if he is allowed to be fully informed or not. I must add I left word to have someone call me and explain this heparin incident and have not gotten a call, that scares me. As does him being placed on surgery schedule for 730 am with no calls to any of his 4 children, and no call back.

I do not understand how this place gets good reviews. I drive 2 hours to come here. Been here 5 times and have not been seen on time yet. Make sure you make your appointment in the morning and plan on sitting there all day. Oh, and you have to wait at least 45 to 60 days just to get an appointment. I thought military healthcare was bad. This place is terrible.

David Stroheker

My Dad and my Uncle swear this VA Hospital isn't as bad as some of the others throughout the country. Both times I've been here with them, facilities are clean, well maintained, all the staff members are friendly and eager to help. And I've seen no problem with their wait time.

I don't normally do reviews but this VA hospital is exceptional. I am dealing with some behavioral health issues and what an amazing group of people and staff. They truly care about veterans and their well being. Take all of your experienced and/Or horror stories and throw them out the window. These guys set the standard for VA health care.

They take real good of the Veterans here. They show much respect and they will not all the time, make you reschedule if your late like other VA FACILITIES DO. I've had the same Dr. For five years now and hope to have him at least another five years. I drive three hours one way just to go to HSTVA because of thier professionalism and respect and care they have shown me. They saved my life if it weren't for them and me listening to them, even when I did not agree, I'd be dead by now. I give a shout out to Dr. Strobbe, hes the best.

My dad who is blind with dementia transferred last night to the ER from another ER around 7:00 and when I arrived at 7:30 he was in his room sitting on the edge of his bed. They had not showed him how to get under the sheets or even helped him take his pants off and into his gown. I was told it was due to the shift change when I inquired. He was given nothing until around 10 when I asked them shouldn't he be given a few supplies, i.e. Cup of water, denture cup, etc. I stayed with him last night and no one nurse or Aid that came in to work with him have cleaned their hands as they entered the room. I have now requested that all staff clean hands on entering his room. Breakfast was french toast and oatmeal, no protein, no cream for the coffee and nothing that had any nutritional value for a diabetic. So as of now, my dad seems to have a better chance to survive at home instead of in the hospital. I am very displeased with the care my dad has received.

Incredible respectful service for our veterans

USAF Veteran

As a younger, female, veteran, I'm disgusted & appalled at the care/treatment received from this facility!!! I've believe in the "Golden Rule," and I would never do to any single person on their staff as they've done towards myself. I will never let my child sign up to serve his country knowing first hand how younger Veteran's get treated, as well as other younger male & female returning Veteran's are getting treated. The greatest risk Veteran's face are PTSD & suicide, yet the treatment/care or there lack of are more a reason of lives lost. The greatest fight young vets face is the VA & the VA's actions over PTSD cause/actions, being reason for their suicide!

After a "NO CANCER HERE, NOTHING BUT BLACK BLOBS WE DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS ...BUT IT AIN'T CANCER" report from a local SW MO. dr for over 7 1/2 mos... I took copies of all CT & X-Ray CD's to HST VA Columbia and in less than 30 min. was told... " We are 100% sure you have cancer...we just don't know what kind yet. After a lot of test to be certain I'm sure, they removed a lung lobe that was totally eaten up with cancer and non-functional at all They saved my life... Greatest Doctors and staff from janitors thru RN's it the world.... If they were any better they could take care of God.

I've had great service from Columbia VA Hospital people are extremely nice, willing to assist, the medical staff have been great. When I was in St. Louis I refused to go to John Cothran to be treated anyone saying they have had a bad experience with Columbia should go to Cothran.

I convinced my mother that going to the VA was in her best interest. I was incredibly wrong. Even though many veterans are women the VA does a piss poor job when it comes to women's health. They don't even have an OBGYN on staff. At first things were moving along well until we hit the Speciality Surgery Dept then it went to hell. I have called many people asking for an explanation as to why the ball was dropped and everyone has ignored me all the way up to Dr. Patterson who is head of the region's hospitals. Ten days ago I took her to the ER there in Columbia and the Docter looked at the clock then us and said.."What do you want me to do?." I also complained about that with no response. They act like they care but in the end you are just another number.

David Wingert

I can not give this hospital enough praise. I've never seen such professional and dedicated people in my Entire life in the v.a. system. I had the utmost care a person could receive. This is one TOP NOTCH hospital. Mr. Director you have so much to be proud of. keep up the good work.

I just called the number listed and asked for the DAV & both numbers they has rang me back to that operator. That's not good on any level, especially when I need to make a request for follow up on a previously submitted claim, as instructed by several V.A. contacts such as my doctor's and case worker's. I simply need guidance and direction and can't get a hold of someone directly. Not good! The DAV can do better by us veterans.

Stephen Terry

The people who work here are absolutely awful people. My grandpa went in last week because he was having complications with his breathing. We heard that they'd probably keep him around 20 or so days to monitor him. We were basically waiting to hear from them so we would be able to get him in an assisted living community. He had a heart attack on Friday 5/1/15 and none of the staff contacted our family. We had no idea that this had happened. We didn't find out about this until the following Monday 5/4/15, around 12pm. We were told that he was unconscious and is on life support, which gave us time to visit him in his last moments. Around 4pm, we got a call saying that he had passed. As soon as I got off work, I rushed up there. I was hysterical. If they had called us on Friday, we could have spent some time with him but they felt it wasn't necessary. He died alone. No loved ones around him. Nobody that cared for him. Nobody that knew who he was. Alone. I was not able to say goodbye to him. We were not able to tell him we loved him. Nothing. Our family was robbed of our last moments with him and he was robbed by not going in peace and love. It's a disgusting thing that they did to him and our family. I can't believe they would do that to a person, let alone a veteran. Despicable...

Truman VA has taken great care of my medical needs. I'm in the WHITE CLINIC greats group of people.

Patrick Cronan

My medical care is superior to that provided to my wife “on the economy” — because my health care is controlled by the VA computers while my wife’s care is controlled by her! There is an advantage to a bureaucracy, if one’s primary concern is quality.

My father is 84 years old and can no longer drive. The hospital and its clinics are over an hour away. He relies on all of us (his children) for rides. We have to try to work around our on jobs to get him there and we don't mind. However, they offer no assistance and make absolutely no effort to coordinate his appointments with the various specialists he sees. This results in multiple trips within a 2 week period when it could have been one or maybe 2 trips at the most. They still charge him an arm and a leg for care despite being low income. Additionally the various specialists do NOT communicate with each other at all meaning several things have gotten missed. My father has received the poorest of care from this hospital and the clinics. I only gave it 2 stars because some of the staff do try as hard as they can. I cannot express the hurt and concern I feel because of the way our veterans are treated. Please try to do better by your patients.

They were awesome! My brother is moving here from out of state. He needed to fill some meds and see the doctor and he was able to get both accomplished today. They even scheduled him to see a new primary care physician. It is a great day!

My negative experiences here are too many to list from the first botched blood draw to the mean and nasty provider Felker.

John Penrod

Just a few words about the VA. All I read is negative articles on the VA.. Can't get an appointment... On and on.. Well let me tell you my personal experience with the Columbia Missouri VA. It serves several states around Missouri. I have been able to get a same day appointment .. Have a Pet scan and Cat scan done within 36 hours. Have treated me every time with the highest respect. Just had open heart surgery... Was totally impressed with the surgeon and staff. The ICU unit is not even a year old... State of the art technology. So for me... They are nothing but awesome!

Grace Smith

Grandpa went in for surgery due to a broken femur and hip, and while he was waiting to have the surgery, he had a massive stroke and no one noticed, for days. He nearly died because of their neglect. He had to be rushed to the MU hospital, where the people know what their doing. Grandpa is back home now, after spending almost 20 weeks in hospitals and rehab centers. Not to mention if you ever want any answers from them, they will give you a complete run-around, making you walk all around the hospital for hours because no one wants to do their job.

Robert Vandelicht

This VA is packed full of those kind of people that would work for free just to help a VET, wait they do. The volunteers a such a super group of people and yet I see people just walk on by or ignore a Hi! From them as they pass. One younger gentleman posted by the elevators to provide guidance to those lost, and he had not even served but his Dad did. Take time to say hello to them. As far as the doctors, I have had one My wife and I didn’t get along with, but switching was easy and they got another doctor for me in the White clinic who is great! I have been going here for about 25 years now. My perception is the doctors can use more help and shouldn’t have to take time to escort patients back and forth, but it’s their system. The pain management section really care to help everyone, and the doctors that I have met are really good. The labs techs are nice and as painless as they can make it. Often taking time to ask how you’ve been doing. They now have a good coffee shop, of course. And other places in the hospital are the nicest and most caring staff and doctors. They honestly want to help. It’s a busy place of course. Sometimes parking is a challenge so use the free valet parking if in a hurry even with the parking garage that’s sometimes full. Sometimes it’s a cattle chute, because the people in front and back need to be seen too. That’s all okay. All I can say is the Columbia VA is full of people that make this VA a place worth going to.

Susie Gorham

They are so good to there veterans Everyone here is absolutely awesome
