The doctors and staff at AVS are very knowledgeable and caring. They educate pet parents and provide options and written estimates, as well as great follow-up care and communication with the pet parent and the pet's regular vet. Sure, the costs are higher, but these are specialists and emergency veterinarians providing highly specialized care 24 hours a day. I trust them with my personal pets as well as my foster pets.

My dog got hit by a van and the cost was over 500 dollars they did x rays and told me my dog paw was fine but he still can walk on it and now it has a infection and the new vet told us that the paw was dead and they should have cut it off back in January because he had no use of it I wouldn’t recommend nobody to take there pets there I’m very unhappy with them

These people are very knowledgeable and professional and caring. They were very helpful helping me figure out how to get my very sick dog to take medicine (and food) when she had no desire to eat. They were very compassionate with us and our dog all the way to the end of her life. I highly recommend them. They are very good about letting you know the price of procedures. When they give a price, it always includes all the options. So if you don't want the options, the price is lower. It was a nice surprise instead of the other way around.

Although my vet recommended 2 other vet specialty services I opted to take my cat here because it took too long to get an appointment to the others so I called and Kathy the receptionist made me feel so at ease and assured I could trust JuJu was in good hands there. I felt Dr Lloyd understood my concerns and was very knowledgeable right away recognising his symptoms and explaining a plan to diagnose and treat him. I got an estimate for a ct scan and non evasive procedure to remove a polyp which was causing JuJu's condition. She was right there was a huge polyp that would have soon killed him as it was blocking his throat and airway. The cost was under the low end of the estimate and worth every penny. JuJu is precious to me and they all are so understanding and kind there. I'm so grateful and highly recommend them to other pet parents facing the decision of choosing the right surgical center. I'm beyond grateful and my baby is well now. Thank you so much AVS staff!

This place is absolutely wonderful. I had an emergency with my dog Finn who had ingested something toxic and was having seizures and they took him right away and started caring for him. He had to spend the night there and I was literally allowed to call anytime I wanted to check on my fur baby. They kept us well informed of any and everything and I was able to bring him home the next day with a clean bill of health. Thank you all again so much for taking care of our dog. We will definetly be back again if the need should come.

My dog needed a tooth removed that our regular vet felt was beyond her expertise. Blood work, xrays, and info from my vet was clear about was needed. The extraction cost over $1300.00 because I had to pay for more blood work, Xrays, etc. I am still angry about this exorbitant expense which I felt I had to pay because this was the only vet in the area that is considered a dental specialist and so I was taken advantage of. I will gladly travel to Columbia, MO if I need a dental specialist again.

My 17 week old boxer puppy stopped eating, and didn't eat for a week. She was emaciated and in and out of my regular vet almost every day. They were clueless. Took her to AVS where they did an ultrasound and found a blockage. She was in surgery that night and home 48 hrs later. This place is amazing. The care they give is wonderful and the staff is top notch. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM!!!!

We had to take our poor puppy to them at like 2am. She had to go to her final dog park. They were caring, professional, and not that expensive. It was how they treated the whole horrible situation with some strangers with great caring and empathy. I say they get an A.

Our dog is dying and they are "demanding" half the money up front BEFORE THEY WOULD EVEN START TREATING HER. As soon as my husband walked in the door, they should have taken our dog and started treating her immediately! One should figure that if you walk into a vet ER that we are animal lovers and are concerned and want to take care of our dog as she was not just a dog, she was our little girl! We are sickened by the fact that our dog lay on the floor seizing and dying and they are wanting half the money up front. Even if they took our dog and started treating her and she passed away, we would have paid our bill. (JUST LIKE WE DID!) We understand that it is a business and that it takes money to run, but when you have people crying and worried over their beloved animal they should realize some people are willing to do whatever it takes to keep their little boy or girl alive! FIRST STEP WAS GOING TO ASSOCIATED VETERINARY SPECIALISTS, BRIDGETON, MO! HUGE HUGE HUGE MISTAKE SHOULD HAVE GONE TO ANOTHER ANIMAL ER. Needless to say, I get a frantic call from my husband that our little girl passed away. Driving in the rain to get to them as fast as I could to be treated like we were going to rob them of their services is TOTAL BS! As my husband is with the dog, I go to talk to them about cremation etc. and the receptionist gets ready to hand me a $600 plus bill--AND THEY DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, BUT LOOK AT HER. I see the bill and ask the receptionist, "Did they even do anything to her?" and she said, "I'm not sure, let me check." (I KNEW THEY DID NOT, I JUST WANTED HER TO EXPLAIN HOW THE HELL THEY GOT TO A $600.00 PLUS BILL WHEN OUR LITTLE GIRL HAD ABSOLUTELY NO TREATMENT FROM THEM!) About 5 minutes passes and she comes back up front to tell me, "No the vet just examined her, so it will be $120 for the examination and $160 if you want to cremate her." In my opinion, she would have let me pay the $600 plus bill and not said a word, thinking we were so grief stricken we would have not known any difference. THIS PLACE NEEDS SOME SERIOUS TRAINING ON PEOPLE SKILLS AND HOW TO DEAL WITH GRIEF STRICKEN PARENTS WHO ARE UPSET OVER THEIR BELOVED ANIMAL(S).

These people will prey on your wallet. What they count on to get the ridiculous prices they get for advanced testing is that you 1. do not actually look at your bill and ask questions like why a 1 lb fedex shipment cost $35 or why disposable forceps cost $20 or why a dose of valium cost $41. (the list goes on and on and on. 2. But for the most part they make their living by betting that you wont shop around. Anything these GUYS do you can have the exact same thing done for substantially less at Midwest Vet Referral Center (chesterfield) or UMC Vet Center (well worth the drive to Columbia to save over $1000.) Bottom line: go ahead and Use AVS if you are a billionaire and money is of no importance. Otherwise-- SHOP AROUND!

We took our 13 year old beagle in because he hadn't eaten in two days. Dr. Wells and the staff at AVS were friendly, caring, and compassionate. Dr. Wells listened to the very long medical history of my dog without interrupting (we've encountered this at other vets) and even wrote down things that we said. They were clear with all costs up front so there was no sticker shock. They were extremely busy, but we never felt like they were rushing us or rushing to diagnose him with something. We will definitely return should we have another pet emergency. I just wish they did regular veterinary care!

My two eleven week old puppies consumed rat poison. I was totally besides myself and had no idea what to do. Their vet recommended them to me. It is now the third day and they are still with us ut their condition is highly guarded. The doctors have been honest with me. I can only hope. Everyone has been caring and compassionate. I only had problems once with an associate about money, but we cleared it up (I think). Their vet recommends them highly and I trust their vet.

I rushed my dog here b/c she was attacked by another dog. The staff, specifically Claudette and Dr. Farnan were great. In fact, in later visits, I met more of the staff and they were all fantastic. I wish I knew everyone's name so I could thank them each personally. They treated my dog with care and helped me through the emotional trauma as well. I was a little surprised the bill wasn't more for everything they did for my girl. Yes, it was a lot, but she had emergency surgery, drains and stitches, not to mention an overnight stay, medications and supplies to treat her at home. She is going to be just fine, thanks to the great care she received at AVS. I love that they send home written instructions for post-op care. I was in shock with what had happened to her and there's no way I could have remembered how to care for her properly. I also called no less than 10 times to ask questions and was greeted by a caring and professional member of the staff every time. I have also called here on several unrelated occasions and they've always given me advice over the phone, which is appreciated more than words can say. They actually answer your questions instead of just trying to get you in the door (unless necessary). This place is a lifesaver, quite literally! I can't quite understand the negative reviews. Yes, ER's are more expensive than normal vets, just like with people. If you want/need the convenience of the hours, then you deal with it. Money WELL spent as far as I'm concerned. I have taken my dog back for 2 follow up visits since the initial attack/visit and I was not charged for either (presumably b/c they anticipate this and bill you upfront). I appreciate this very much and it's a relief to not be nickel and dimed to death, although I would pay whatever necessary for my "kids". I'm not sure my sweet girl would be here today and I would probably be in a rubber room without AVS. I hope I never have to go back (b/c that means one of my dogs is in danger), but if I do, I'll come here in a heartbeat. They saved my sanity, and more importantly, my baby girl.

We lost 2 dogs during routine dental cleanings. No explanationfrom their regular Vet. No way would I ever let a regular Vet clean our dogs teeth.Ever. We took our 14 year old Lab,to see the Dentist here. Buddy had gotten weak over the weekend and he did not perform the dental because he was more concerned about Buddy than just making $. He called our regular Vet twice and helped us lift Buddy into our car. Who does that? No one.,Sadly, Buddy died 5 days later. Our pugs will have their teeth cleaned here.,I just wish,he was a human dentist. He showed more concern and compassion than any Dentist I've ever met.

They were very sympathetic with my son and I when we had to bring our family pet in and he was sick enough to be put down. This was very hard to do and they were very conscientious of our feelings. They brought a blanket in and put it on the floor for us and allowed us time to spend time with our dog to say our goodbyes. The company that did the cremation did a wonderful job. We received our pet back a few days later in a box with a beautiful urn, a paw print of our dog, and some seeds to plant in our garden in remembrance of him. Very professionally done. We also received a sympathy card from them that the whole staff had written a note on and signed. It was very nice. Thank you for the compassion you showed in this very difficult time of our life.

My dog ate a vinyl exam glove today, and when calling the emergency line, I was greeted by a kind friendly woman that instead of the general, "well you have to bring him in" actually consulted the doctor and advised me on how to induce vomiting. Special thank you to Dr. Elizabeth Farnan, she diagnosed my dog immediately and performed very difficult GDV operation! She is amazing! Just because of her my dog is back to normal and well!!! My baby, my Boxer, Womp, was his usual self. Out of nowhere Womp fell to the ground and had some kind of seizure. And lost all bowel and bladder control. I was crying so hard. I was sobbing. Dave was feeling the same way. We brought Womp in expecting compassion from a place that, I believe, straight up was only greedy and did care at all. They were not even going to let me be with Womp when they said they recommended putting Womp down. I told them, while sobbing, that was the meanest thing I have ever heard. Fast forward to a few years later we had a terrible house fire. Kiss could not breath. We took Kiss there. They seemed just as cold and uncaring and mean at that time. Diagnosed our poor baby with Lung disease and had to be on meds for life. We spent all We had. The next month Kiss tore up and swallowed this huge toy. We tried everything. We called our own vet and they said they could try surgery but more likely it was wrapped around Lisa's intestines. For awhile it seemed ok. But then, of course, in the middle of the night Kiss became pretty much unresponsive. So we took her back to your care after we spent thousands of dollars there! And we did not have enough money. They knew we were having an extremely hard go of it. And I do feel he yelled at the top of his lungs..."DO NOT EVER COME HERE AGAIN UNLESS YOU GUYS HAVE AT LEAST 800 TO OVER A THOUSAND DOLLARS! I told him what I felt. We stayed up with Kiss who was extremely in pain. Then we waited to the minute the other place opened. We told them what we been through and did not charge us even a penny! I would have given this place here minus a million. I feel we were treated horrible there!

Nearly one year ago I brought my dog here because my vet's office was closed. My dog had blood in her urine and was urinating frequently. The "doctors" at this facility told me after a quick examination that she most likely had bladder cancer and would not live much longer. They could do treatment to help her for the time she had left and gave me an estimate of the cost. A whopping three thousand dollars or more was the estimate. I asked if it was possible there may be another cause to her symptoms, perhaps a bladder infection? They insisted that bladder cancer was the only thing causing her symptoms. I took my dog to the vet I have been going to for 10 years for a second opinion (Dr. Seiler at Spanish Lake Animal Hospital) and he ran some tests and kept doing different things to rule out the ridiculous claim of bladder cancer. Eventually after testing her urine a few times Dr. Seiler put her on an antibiotic and within less than 2 weeks she was back to normal and has not had a problem since. I am writing this review a year later because to this day I am still traumatized by my visit here and would NEVER go back even if it was the last animal hospital on earth. I could treat my dog better than this place could.

If I could give less than 1 star I would! Complete misdiagnosed my pup after 2 shots at it ran xrays found nothing prescribed meds to no avail. Although it was on a weekend and I felt it was an emergency spent close to $500 for nothing take to his vet on Monday with back story the vet feels something in his intestines calls in another vet to verify she also felt something which then they referred me to VSS and they did a wonderful job on my pup..I wouldn’t let AVS treat a pet rock...

I have never had to take a pet for emergency care as my pets have always been healthy and active with regular vet visits. I woke up to a very ill cat on Sunday morning and my vet's recording recommended AVS. I called prior to going and informed them that I had a cat who was extremely ill and when I arrived, Cathy was at the door waiting for me and immediately took my cat back for care. Dr. Bergmann came to me shortly after to inform me that unfortunately, my cat had a heart condition, which was unbeknownst to me. He said it couldn't be treated and explained in detail the condition and how illness happens suddenly and there are usually no symptoms. He stated my cat was in severe pain and distress and was suffering and the humane thing was to have him put down, much to my extreme devastation. Dr. Bergman was so sympathetic and you could tell he was genuinely sorry. Cathy, most of all, was so kind and compassionate. She held my hand and hugged me and helped me with my grief as best she could. She was so sweet to my precious boy. I could never do what these vets and vet techs do, so I am so extremely grateful for the care they gave to my beloved cat. Please look past the bad reviews as often times people don't understand the expense involved. Our pets can't talk, so many tests must be done to find out what's wrong. That takes training, time and money. If your pet is ill or injured, please give this place a chance to care for them. They truly are good people and really have concern for our pets and aren't just after money. Pet care is expensive and vets are not miracle workers. They can only do so much. Losing a pet is devastating. AVS was there with compassion to guide me through a terribly difficult decision. I lost a cherished and beloved member of my family and I am deeply heartbroken, but I am grateful for the care and compassion shown to me and especially my sweet boy. I had him cremated and picked up his remains and the staff all came out to say a few words of sympathy and hugs. Thank you Dr. Bergmann, Cathy and the rest of the wonderful staff at AVS. I truly appreciate the wonderful care you gave to my beloved Griffin.

I was in with my friend and her dog. You could hear the dog wheezing when he was breathing and the vet used a stethoscope and said that he could not hear any wheezing. Then he did X-rays and saw that the dog had pneumonia. Needless to say, I didn't have a lot of confidence in the vet. Maybe he needs his hearing checked? So we decided to take the dog to our regular vet the next morning.the last time I brought my dog here, the vet tried to tell me that my dog had degenerative knees so I went for another opinion thankfully, and he had a muscle strain, recovered in 3 weeks and went on to have an 8-year sport career without any problems. If I would have trusted her the first time, my dog would have been in for a lifetime of complications and I would have been out thousands of dollars.

As I walked out the front desk woman said we apologize for your wait but we do have "critical patients". How do you know what condition my pet was in? Disgrace to an ER vet office.

Took my yorkie in because she had a tick I couldn't get off of her. The staff and Doctor were so kind and caring for what was probably a small issue for them, but a big deal to me. They took care of it, and the dr came out to talk about it and took his time explaining what to watch for afterwards. So much attention over a tiny tick. Thank you AVS. My significant other and I took our pet here because she was unable to move her tail due to a crack on the vertebrae.. the main vet was very rude. He was already out the door before we could ask any further questions, and when we did have a chance to try to ask a question he give us the fastest response possible then out the door. He did a "check" for our dog for 5 mintues then we waited 50 more minutes just for a paper to see what we would be paying for and what we can do. We didnt even see the x-ray of our animal while we were at the office. I called in for the x-ray to be sent to me. Very poor communication and people skills on his part. Everyone else did an excellent job!

My pomeranian was very ill all of a sudden and after bringing him here, we found out that he had blood clots that caused the loss of blood circulation in his legs. They were very patient with us and and explained all of Nemo's options. Due to how chronically ill he was, we decided to put him down. This place seems to care about nothing but your wallet. I had my dog in for breathing problems and they kept her three days 2700 dollars later and she is worse then she was before going in. I took her back and explained to Vet what was going on all they wanted to do is charge me more for the same test they just performed on her less then a month ago. Then they claim they can't prescribe any meds without test but when I refused test they still prescribed meds and gave her a shot to reduce fluid.. Most of the employees act as if they are annoyed with you. There is a few that actually act as if they care. I'm still not 100% sure then even did any test because they don't seem to know exactly what is wrong with her they said it was bronchitis and said her heart looked good. But when I took her back they said well it seems she might be having congestive heart failure....I Don't trust them at all ,which is sad. BEWARE IS ALL I CAN SAY!!!!!

I called to make an emergency appointment for my cat who suddenly couldn't walk. The receptionist was rude. I go in, with my cat dying in my arms and I was completely ignored for 5 minutes. Until someone came from the back and I got their attention. She was super nice and professional. The vet who ended up helping me was also very kind and professional and also fast acting. Unfortunately my cat ended up passing away but at least they did what they could.

Let me start by saying I had the misfortune of having to bring two of my cats to AVS. One for diagnosis of intestinal lymphoma (back in 2008) another for radioactive iodine treatment for hyperthyroidism (Dec 2015). My first experience was with Dr. Wayne Hause. My cat was puking and loosing weight and my regular vet was suspecting IBD or intestine lymphoma. We basically just needed a confirmation. AVS did a whole battery of labs, EKG (since my cat had a murmur), and abd ultrasound, upper endoscopy with biopsy. Basically stick me with over $3000 dollars vet bill. I'm an cardiac ICU nurse, so did my cat need an EKG? No. He is NOT having heart problems. He is having GI problems. (some can argue that if the heart failure is bad enough you can have GI problems... But come on, there would be other symptoms). Does my cat need the endoscopy or biopsy just to differentiate intestine lymphoma? No. The end result and treatment is basically the same. Steroids. Basically they talked me into doing unnecessary tests and procedures on my poor kitty just to make money and to be "thorough". For my second cat, me was also puking and loosing weight. Turns out he had some sort of GI bug as his became hypertyroid was getting worse (funny thing was, my regular vet had checked thyroid levels less than a year ago). This time we saw Dr. Christine Cocayne. Granted, we had brought my cat to AVS after hours as he was getting dehydrated (yes, I was tempted to fluid resuscitate him myself at home) and I had to work early next morning. The oncall vet that was there basically didn't do much other than give my cat an IV and some fluids and waited until Dr. Cocayne got there in the morning. While she was professional and we had a couple conversation over the phone regarding diagnostics and treatment, she was appearently too busy to bother spending more than a few minutes talking to me when I picked up my cat. There was no followup what so ever. In fact, when my cat had recovered from his GI bug and I called back to schedule his radioactive iodine treatment, Dr. Cocayne did not even bother explaining anything to me. They repeatedly told me over the phone and when I drop him off about the cost for the treatment, making sure I knew how much it cost. During the 2 days my cat was there, I spoke to the nurse. When I pick up my cat, the receptionist basically asked for payment before I even got to see my cat. After she collected $1400 from me without giving me an itemized breakdown of my bill, she went over the discharge instruction with me, but don't ask her any specific questions that's not printed on the paper... Cause she doesn't know the answer. The nurse just brought my cat out in his carrier. I tried to ask her specific questions (what to do about the dirty liter, exactly how radioactive is the waste, how radioactive is my cat, etc.) I basically got a lot of dodging. They don't Geiger the cat waste... They are only required by law to do this and that... When I asked if they had a vet or manager I can talk to, she told me there wasn't anyone. Granted, it is Christmas eve, but if one of my patient's family ask for my manager, I contact my manager and ask them to contact the family, Christmas eve or not. Bottom line, they don't care about you or your pet. They just care about the money. Are they able to provide good medical care? Yes. But they have zero bedside manners. So why do I bring my pets there? Because there are no other veterinary specialists, unless I want to drive hours to another facility in Columbia or Kansas City. They know they have the monopoly.

WARNING This place is NOT an emergency clinic as they say they are. They don't have the resources or vets available for multiple emergency only one emergency vet. My dog had a serious paw injury that needed surgery immediately. They ignored her care and did surgery more than 7 hours later because they only had one vet on staff. Now a week later we have found out that she may need more surgeries due to the long wait time. These people will prey on your wallet and nickel and dime you for a bandage, etc. If you have a true emergency take them to Midwest Vet Referral Center (chesterfield) or a another reputable emergency vet clinic. I would NEVER TAKE my pet there OR TRUST them again.
