Having used this vet for over 5 years for my Lab/Vizsla mix, I have grown to trust this vet. There is never a problem being seen and the atmosphere is always friendly and relaxed. I have also used the kenneling facilities from GAVH and have had no issues (there are cheaper places to go that have more social-ability for the animals, but when I need to know my dog will be well cared for, I go here.) I especially enjoy the staff- its nothing like a chain-vet hospital and I feel that all patients there are shown something you would hope for in any hospital- compassion!

Don't be fooled by calm bedside manner. It is medical competence that matters. Our pets can't speak so we must speak for them and when we say something is wrong and bring them to the vet, it is reasonable to expect that appropriate tests will be done and a diagnosis will be made. We have taken three dogs there over the last 35 years. They have ignored every symptom we have presented with. Their failure to diagnose two dogs resulted in unnecessary extended pain and death. They do fine with lots of vaccinations and neutering but have failed diagnoses in three dogs.

Zero stars. I had scheduled appt for 800am surgery to extract tooth. Told to be there at 700am. I waited all morning and afternoon. No call status. I call at 300pm and was told she just got into surgery. My cat was kept in cage for 8 hours, in pain and no food or water for 2 days. Seems a dog who needed more serious surgery on tooth extractions came in (which was rescheduled) and deemed more important than my cat's procedure. So my cat got bumped. Cruel to keep my animal in a cage all that time. When I asked to speak to the Mgr. I was told there is no such scheduled -- its' all adhoc! So why did you ask me to bring her in at 700am, 800am surgery scheduled? Why did your staff call me the day before to confirm my scheduled appt? I was LIVID AND UPSET! Oh you shouldn't take the calendar literally when they schedule your pet. And btw, when I asked for answers, their response when they called back was they just extracted tooth. This was in less than 30 min when I called at 300. So my cat could have been done early as scheduled and up from anthesthia this morning vs. the dog who took hours for surgery. I WILL NEVER take my baby to this place and this Dr. I would NOT RECOMMEND you take yours. There is no such schedule. No such appt. They are made to wait in a cage for hours on end..in pain! And yet this get worse and I'm reposting. I can't believe this. I pick up my cat, get her home, she wobbly walking. Read the instructions the Dr. Hannah Booth gave me and it says to give her the medications tonight at 8:00pm which is highlighted in yellow. One of the medications, an inflammation med, says to give to her with food for the next 3 days. I open up package and only 1 pill. Seriously, this place does not CARE about my cat nor do they CARE about the customer. CARE it seems is out the window on my cat. Reminds me of how our poor Vets are treated when they go to a VA hospital. Incompetent. I again had to call the hospital to ask why only 1 pill when your directions say otherwise. They call me back. sorry...our screw up. We wont charge you for the 2 missing pills. Are you kidding me!? Hell no you won't charge me especially after the fact I was lied to on costs of all this being $1200 upfront when I took my cat in for pre-appt the day before when total amount ended up being $1700. Because of their screwup I now have to go back there to get my 2 pills. Horrible. Just horrible. This Dr. should be ASHAMED. So Dr. Boothe, how would you feel if this happened to your precious pet? And how would you feel if this pet was all you had in your life? Customer Service is something you need to improve. It's all about "I CARE" -- Customer Service, Accountability, Responsibility & Experience. I'm still very upset over the handling of my baby's surgery. As much as that dog's pain was important to their owner, my cat's pain was just as important to me. This vet is very disingenuous in the fact they schedule you, give you an appt. time, staff calls day before to confirm your appt/surgery only to learn it's all adhoc. We don't live in Socialism or have socialized medicine. I paid $1700 for my turn in line. My baby got bumped. This isn't how it works. The bigger issue here is when a Dr. starts prioritizing and playing God with your precious pet...it's time to find another Dr. Typical liberal response, abdicating responsibility. Because eventually you have to comply to something that is just unjust. You start taking by guilt, then shame, then force.

I have been taking my dogs to GAVH since 1999 and have had wonderful experiences with many vets over the years. More recently, Dr. Jane Keegan has been instrumental in the medical care of my lab/pit mix, Camden. Dr. Keegan has gone above and beyond her scope of work to make sure Camden has had the most consistent and appropriate care. Due to his timid nature, Dr. Keegan spends extra time making Camden feel comfortable interacting with her. She always makes sure to approach him slowly, calmly, and sweetly and always has a treat for him. Camden has actually started wagging his tail and becoming excited to see her! Over the past few years, Camden has had many issues with skin and ear infections. Dr. Keegan consistently offers a variety of treatment approaches and thoroughly explains each option, making sure I fully understand. She talks me through the pros and cons of each treatment and allows me to be included in the final decision. She consistently contacts me after each appointment to check on Camden's progress and takes the time to answer all of my questions and concerns. Dr. Keegan has continued to keep my financial situation in mind and always offers me cost-effective solutions while doing everything in her power to save me money. She has definitely done her research to find the best deals on medications and specialty dog food (which can get crazy expensive). Even though I moved out of Annapolis over 3 years ago, I have continued taking both my pups to Dr. Keegan because of my appreciation for her above and beyond care of animals. I plan on staying with GAVH and Dr. Keegan as long as possible. I would highly, highly recommend Dr. Keegan to anyone and everyone looking for the highest quality care for their pets.

So our experiences here have been kind of iffy over the years. Our first pet had gotten very old and was ill so the vet recommended surgery. Our dog died on the surgery table and as we’ve become more pet savvy, the better choice at that time (and what most vets would have recommended) was to give him one last good day and then put him down with family there as he passed. We’ve always regretted that we never got that chance. With our second dog one of the vets there was great and diagnosed her with severe food allergies and saved us from having to put her down (she was so ill). She’s now a great old dog and we’re so happy the vet diagnosed her properly. The vet Duane Woodburn is our absolute favorite for his recommendation and his further help so if you go see anyone here, I highly suggest him. If he left this practice I’m pretty sure we would follow him elsewhere. However with that exception, we’ve had issues with pricing. This hospital is pretty pricy and they don’t always tell you. We’ve had vets recommend a bunch of tests and other stuff for our dog and when we ask them the price we’re astounded by the cost. We then ask if the tests are necessary and the answer is almost always ‘Not really.’ I don’t want to pay $500 for unecessary tests. We also tried getting a flea collar for her from here and in a baffling twist the collar was soooo much more expensive then it was on amazon or even listed on their website. When we asked why it was because ‘there’s a convience fee for having it sent here for you to pick it up.’ (Not sent directly to our home, sent to the vet hospital for us to pick up) The price ended up being double if not more than the price online. In the end I have to say the staff is friendly and they love animals and are sympathetic, but they’ve made some major major blunders in our past with them. We’ve tried some other vets but they were disappointing too so we keep coming back to here. For a point in their favor they’re good with emergency calls and the vets seem like they know what they’re talking about, and they care deeply about the animals. The terrible blunder with our first dog was a long time ago (but hard to forget, as any pet lover knows). I’m hesitant to recommend this place to anyone but it’s not the worst vet we’ve been to (we have tried others). The one vet I reccomended is really great but we can’t get him all the time.

This is an outstanding veterinary practice and I have high praise for Dr. Elizabeth Daher who has been treating my dogs for nearly a decade. Yes, I am a Northern Virginia resident, and yes I continue to drive to Annapolis so that my animals can receive the kind of care that they deserve and that I was unable to find in my local area. Many times they have been on the cutting edge of knowing about new medications coming on the market and new procedures of which other veterinary practices were unaware. This is a busy practice, but it is clear that the health and well-being of the animals (and their human companions) is their first priority. Never have I felt that they were doing needless tests just to jack up a bill -- an experience I found all too prevalent in the Arlington/Alexandria area. So kudos to GAVH. They do it right.

This is the best Veterinary Hospital I have ever used. We bring all of our cats here now and have had services ranging from routine exams, to thorough screenings, and sadly to the euthanasia of one of our beloved cats. Throughout all of these visits the staff and doctors have been wonderful. Their "bedside manner" is fantastic and they always work hard to find a solution to whatever is ailing our cats. When one of our cats became sick last summer and it became apparent that it was time to let him go, everyone was extremely sensitive and caring during what was a very difficult time for our family, and for that I will forever be grateful. On a less personal note, it is always easy to get an appointment here, often same day, and I have found the rates for all services to be very reasonable, especially when coupled with the level of care given. I can't recommend GAVH enough-they are fantastic and I wouldn't think about going elsewhere.

We have been taking our Golden here for the last year and love it! He is 9 years old, deaf, and on medication for thyroid issues. Greater Annapolis has been great helping us understand everything and keep him healthy. We just rescued a 3 year old Husky and she had her first visit earlier this month. She is not found of the vet but the Dr. and tech were helpful with her anxiety and helping me control both big dogs! Boarding prices are a little steep for the area so we go elsewhere, but will continue to use this office so long as we live in the area.

Shira Catlin

I am in the Annapolis area for the summer and needed to get my dog a booster shot. The longer she spends in vet buildings the more scared she gets. The vet techs and veterinarian were all very understanding and went above and beyond to try and keep her calm even when she became very feisty. If I were to live here permanently I would not hesitate to choose them as my veterinary hospital.

This is the best place I've found for boarding, grooming and other pet services. The friendly staff are true animal-lovers, and all their "guests" are treated with care and affection. Our puppy always comes back from grooming happy and looking great. I wouldn't take her anywhere else. OTPR is on the high side of the price spectrum, but they're worth every penny.

I am so happy to have found this veterinarian office. Very open to calling for questions and getting answers from the receptionists and also the Doctor that I deal with. Very friendly, warm welcome every single time and also just open to hearing and listening to your concerns before jumping into anything. Looking forward to this being our Vet of choice for our new puppy as there are so many vet offices in Annapolis, but the reviews and service I receive are why I have chosen them.

GAVH has been our veterinary practice since we brought home golden Harvey at 8 weeks old in July 1990. Regular checkups and emergencies for 8 dogs over those years. We're "growing up" with several of the staff members, too! It's welcoming to see consistency over 2+ decades. We especially appreciated the delicate "managing" and "thinking outside the box" approach for our elderly dog Gemma. She lived to almost 18, with those last two years carefully managed by Gemma's incredibly qualified "health care team" to give her an excellent quality of life. Thank you for being there for us all these years!

The worst part of moving away from Annapolis is having to find a new vet. GAVH has been consistently wonderful during the ten plus years I've been taking my dogs to them. When my lab needed surgery, they talked me through every step and called to check in afterwards. When it was time for her to be put to sleep, the only positive of that tough time was that I knew it would be done in a place where she felt comfortable and with compassionate staff. My other dog can be a little nervous and they always take time to give her some love and make her feel comfortable at the beginning of the appointment. My whole family loves this place.

Janet Keiple

I can’t say enough good things about this place! After years at an uncaring money grubbing vet-this place is a breath of fresh air. There are actually vets who care more about animals than money. I wish we would’ve gone here all those years. They think of everything to care for your pet. They are the best!

Ava Ellett

I'm unhappy with the care my dog has received recently, specifically when we first rescued him. We've been taking our cats here for years and have always had no issues and the staff was friendly and the place clean (that's why it's 2 stars and not 1), but we recently adopted a dog and it hasn't been as positive of an experience. Dog had diarrhea at the shelter so we took him to our vet within 24 hours of adopting him. Never said he was friendly, as I didn't know him super well yet. Dog is up on table, and the vet comes in and her first interaction with him is petting/tousling the top of his head above his ears reaching over his head... he gave her a hard look for a few seconds and then lunge barked at her face, and she was obviously startled as were we.... he obviously was really scared and he didn't really know us too well yet. It wasn't quite a snap but more of a warning bark. The Dr. told us he had fear aggression and that we'd have to be extremely careful around all people, kids, dogs, etc... then she wanted us to muzzle him and she went to put the muzzle on from the front, and I had said he was head shy so obviously he winced and tried to get away. She then took him in the back and claimed that she was only able to do the exam because she had a vet tech who was "the dog whisperer". We left kind of sad, he was stressed out and we realized he might have aggression, on top of having diarrhea. They told us that next time he came to the vet he needed to be on Xanax. He then developed kennel cough and had to go back, so we requested a different doctor who did better with him. He was still fearful but she took her time with him and eventually warmed up to her. Another time he needed his anal glands expressed, I had tried to do it myself and he let me try, but I haven't done it before so I decided to take him in instead. I told the vet techs everything, that he is scared and that he might do better with me there, and they insisted he'd be fine. 5 minutes later a different tech comes out and tells me it didn't go well, that they were able to do it but they had to wrap a towel around his head. But she then tells me he didn't snap or try to bite, he just squirmed and didn't like them touching him, recommended Xanax again, and told me maybe I should come back with him next time. I left annoyed, because I had recommended that upon arriving. Mainly, I am writing this review because of the first vet. He needed a heartworm test. We made an appt with the vet he did well with, but she told me that she thought that he would do better sedated for a blood draw. I honestly was okay with it at first but the more I thought about it, the more unnecessary it seemed... She mentioned that his "inhibition wasn't there" and this really confused me because I had never seen him snap at anyone. I am writing this because we decided to take our dog elsewhere and upon seeing the full medical records, I was furious. No wonder everyone kept trying to medicate my dog when he's just nervous and needs a little time to warm up. His file from his first visit read: "diagnosis: fear biter. Pet him and he seemed okay, then tried to bite without warning. Tried to bite for temperature too. Tried to put muzzle on and he did an alligator roll" I have several issues with this. If this is the vet's definition of trying to bite, she needs a new profession. He barked/lunged, but did not snap. No teeth clacking. The warning would be ALL of the body language he was exhibiting that she seemingly missed. An alligator roll is also called a DEATH roll, and what I think she meant to say is that he may have showed his belly out of submission since he was so scared? Alligators do it to subdue their prey. Also, she didn't even try to take his temperature beyond when the vet tech tried and he shy'd away. We took him somewhere else and got a blood draw and full exam with me in the room, without issue. No muzzle, no sedation, no meds. The issue was these guys. Make sure you get the full records, not just a receipt. He left the new place happy with all staff and healthy.

From the GAVH website, "Greater Annapolis Veterinary Hospital is open for emergencies Monday—Friday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday (non-routine appointments) 9 a.m. to 4 p.m" One would assume a veterinary hospital could handle veterinary emergencies, especially when this claim is made on their official website. My 15 year old Miniature Schnauzer had a burst blood vessel in his eye that was bleeding severely. I assumed his eye was injured so I brought him in to GAVH at 2 p.m. on Saturday 3/23. They refused to treat him and sent us to the emergency vet about 1 mile away. We have been customers of GAVH for more than 4 years. I implore GAVH to update their information to reflect that they cannot actually handle emergency situations during the hours represented on their website, if at all. Duncan is fine. However, we will be seeking another vet for all 3 of our animals. GAVH was not there when we needed them most.

I am absolutely thrilled at how they have treated us and our dogs here. They act like our dogs are their own. They are not the cheapest vet around but their care is the best. We have made friends with one of the technicians who sent us texts of him cuddling with our pup when she had to stay overnight. It was nice to know that they take the utmost care of the animals. We recommend them to everyone.

With 5 pets, we pretty much live at the vet. We live the convenience of GAVH- they keep such long hours that it's easy to make appointments without missing work. Only reason that this is not a 5 star is that we have encountered a few alarmist vets (encouraged us to order expensive tests where other vets would probably not). Dr. Monk is our family favorite.

BeatriceStCyr .

Vets here are very good but Prices have SKYROCKETED here. I was shocked to be billed for a procedure that did not happen because my pet was anxious and would not let the vet go near her. The vet prescribed anti-anxiety medication that was ineffective. GAVH did not refund my money. Evidently it was my pet's fault. NOT happy.

Dr Anderson was the vet I saw here. I brought my 1 year old adopted pup into get her annual check up and shots. The women at the desk we nice and so were the others waiting. My girl is so well behaved and sweet but she is shy when it comes to new people. I told them this. I went to put her on the scale and she wouldn’t go because she was scared. I lifted her up and she ended up expressing her glands as she does sometimes when she’s scared. The first response i got from the vet was asking if it “got all over he place” with a very negative attitude and no sympathy at all. From there is only got worse. She proceeded to come towards my dog and scared her. My girl growled some. She then told me to put this thin tweed collar leash around her neck so that she could choke drag her into the other room. I asked to come and was denied. I told her she would be really scared. I sat waiting. I heard my dog barking out for help. A few minutes later she was brought back in and the vet was acting disgusted. She complained about her pooping and peeing and trying to bite them. She didn’t get any shots done. My dog was obviously terrified . My dog has never tried to bite anyone ever. The vet called her very aggressive and told me to muzzle her and cover her head with a blanket so that they could draw blood and give shots. I got the muzzle on with no problem at all. After she rattled off about how my dog needs temperament class but may always be that way. She left the room and never came back. A vet tech came in to check me out and bill me hundreds of dollars. This was traumatizing for my little girl and so emotionally draining for me. I can never go back. The vets name was Dr Anderson. Highly discourage anyone from seeing this unsympathetic doctor who rushed me along as if she was over it.

So glad I found them! Stan the cranky rescue dog had a progressively painful paw and wasn't walking. The staff at GAVH were great at every stage/level. Dr. Woodburn is excellent-- his communication about the diagnosis and options was exactly what a pet owner needs. They have a lot of extra touches that made the process easy from the new patient check-in through payment. Even though I was new and they squeezed me in last-minute, they did most of the work ahead of time. You can check out right in the patient room, rather than wrestle with your pet and wallet/other patient pets at the front desk. Sounds minor, but actually brilliant! Stan even liked the staff and didn't seem tempted to bite a single one of them. That's a glowing recommendation right there

I want to say thank you to Dr. Anderson and all of the staff at Greater Annapolis for their caring and compassion on Monday when I had to put my sweet Katie down suddenly. She was 14 years old and my best friend. They got me right in, talked me through the process, and let me have as much time with her as I needed to say my good byes. It was one of the hardest things I have ever done, but their compassion and knowing that she was in good hands helped me get through it. My new puppy Sophie is also a patient with you guys, and I look forward to seeing everyone again for happier visits. Thank you again for everything. You are the best vets in town.

I inadvertently stumbled on this website looking for the emergency clinic phone number for a test my dog needs tomorrow. But so used to dealing exclusively with GAVH, here I am typing in GAVH. Ha, ha. I saw the reviews for Drs. Woodburn and Woodburn, husband and wife. In my opinion, and we've been taking multiple furry babies to GAVH, there are no better veterinarians on earth than Woody and Norma Woodburn. When one of ours is in trouble, my first call to GAVH hospital begins with, "Is Woody or Norma on today and if not, when will they be in." They stay on top of the latest research, go to conferences, and are the best of the best. I say same about Dr. Harrison Monk, also and that's my next question to staff if I cannot reach either of the Dr. Woodburns. These folks are seasoned veterinarians, who have "seen it all," -- the go to vets, especially when things may not be looking good or it's complicated.

I used to use this vet many years ago and recently thought about using them again UNTIL I called to inquire on the ballpark price for a k9 dental, I almost choked when she told me it's around $1500+ lololol Seriously? That must be the most expensive dental around.. That's out of control, she went on to tell me that included bloodwork and meds, WOW.. My advice is to Keep shopping around, there are a lot of wonderful vets in the area that you don't need to mortgage yourself to death to see..

I recently started bringing my Dog Alfie in because Greater Annapolis had the equipment to take care of his needs. They told us what was going on with him and what to expect. They have great bedside manner and really care for your pet like its their own. They stayed on the phone with me for 30mins while I asked questions. I was amazed while sitting in the waiting room at how they knew pets names as they walked in the door. In a time where we needed care for our pet, they made us feel right at home. There prices are compariable to a larger corporation with the feel of a hometown Vet. I will now be bring my dogs to Greater Annapolis. Thank you so much for all you are doing for Alfie. We are greatful!

This is a wonderful vet clinic. They're one of only a handful of vets in the area that provide care for exotics. When our guinea pig got sick (she was older, and we knew she may only have a short time left with us), we took her there. She was only their patient that one time, and yet, two months later when she peacefully passed, they helped me handle things for her, and even provided a paw print keepsake to remember her. During such a sad time, I was so thankful for GAVH's caring staff. I even received a sympathy card from them in the mail - again, after only having visited them one time! I was amazed, and so grateful; we will definitely be bringing our second guinea pig, as well as our cat, here. Thanks so much!

Margo Gallegos

GAVH was able to give me a same day appointment to get my cat vaccinated before I adopted another cat. We saw Dr. Boothe and she was fantastic and answered some of our dietary questions while we were there. Highly recommend her!

Very pleased with the care my pup received here.

Susan Duff

Dr Woodburn is a fantastic vet, as is his wife- the other Dr Woodburn. I have older pets some of whom have had difficult diagnoses - and they have come thru every time and enabled me to do the best for my pet. I could not ask for more caring folks to deal with. Thanks a bunch!

Diane Donnelly

I have been going to GAVH for over 25 years. They have cared for four of my dogs. They take such great care of the animals in their care and are so sensitive to when it's time for the pet to cross the rainbow bridge. I wouldn't consider going to a different vet.

My husband and I loved this vet. We came here with our cats for three years before we had to move and always had a good experience, and were really sorry to leave. We mostly saw Dr. Keegan, who finally figured out a long term solution to our older cat's allergy problems (our previous vet couldn't think of anything but steroids), but everyone we saw there was always very good. I was surprised by how considerate Dr. Daher was. She had to give us the bad news about one of our cats having liver cancer, and after he died and we came in for a checkup with our new cat a couple months later, we happened to be seeing her in the same exam room. She asked if we would prefer not to be seen in that exam room again. It didn't actually bother us, but I really appreciated how thoughtful she was. They also sent a sweet sympathy card signed by the whole office when Myshkin died. You really can't go wrong with them - both in terms of the quality of their medical care, and their bedside manner.

Kimberley Compton

i don't quite understand the poor- fair rating this office is getting. i was here earlier today for the first time. my cat was treated as if it were their own and all my questions were clearly answered to my understanding. The doctor suggested a treatment that was fair and 'not trying to clean my wallet'. i def recommend this place for your furry sons and daughters.

Cody Edwards

Two stars only because my first visit with the vet was excellent, but I just had an unbelievable conversation with a front desk staff member. I called and informed them that I was going to be late for my appointment, and they said as long as it was within 15 minutes after, they’d see me, but any later and they wouldn’t. Obviously fair, and I knew I was still going to miss it by a few minutes so I called again and told them I wouldn’t make it, but needed a dog physical form signed off on for my dog to get onto an airline with me. I explained to her that I just had one done a couple months ago, and that I, quite literally 5 minutes before speaking with her, confirmed with an airline customer service rep that any physical dated within the last few months would suffice, and the paperwork provided to me by the airline says “forms must be dated within one year prior to your flight”. She was NOT having that, and could of at least just told me that it couldn’t be accomplished without an appointment, which would’ve been fine! But instead I was given “I’ve been working here for 22 years, and you’re wrong, if it isn’t within the last 10 days the airline won’t take it” and refused to assist (she didn’t even confirm with me which airline it was), and I told them I’d just have to go elsewhere. Why wouldn’t she just tell me if they would fill out the forms or not?? Then she tried to rebook me for another day when I said from the get go that I needed it done today. After you just tried to argue with me? No thanks.

I can not say enough about how wonderful the veterinarians and staff are! I have taken rescue pups as well as my own German Shepherd to this practice. I have used them for routine care and pet illness. I have always been able to get a prompt appointment. There is little to no wait time once you arrive and everyone is kind and caring. I highly recommend GAVH!

I highly recommend this facility and particularly the people who make this place special. I just had a very difficult and challenging couple of days where my father had to decide whether it was time for his beloved pet to pass. Naturally, my father was incredibly reluctant to make this decision. And he was not in a position to know what needed to happen except for the expertise of the the GAVH staff. His very old dog was worsening with each day and we were facing some important quality of life issues. Because there was some urgency to our situation, the GAVH folks prioritized our situation evaluating what could or should be done and then taking the time to talk with my father about the issues and helped outline a process for making this decision. They were incredibly patient and loving with my father and with his dear pooch. What struck me the most was how the GAVH staff made the well-being of the dog the focal point when they could have very well pushed medical procedures/medications to my father who had no idea what was best for that moment. It was clear that their primary focus was the overall well-being of the dog. I ascribe all of this to the wonderful staff at the hospital from the person who answered the phone, to the professionalism, integrity, and compassion of the vet Dr. Monk who made himself fully available both in terms of time and spirit to help my father (and me) through this difficult day. I can honestly say coming to GAVH made me appreciate how there are still businesses out there that are about the well-being of our animals and their clients - and not the mighty dollar.
