REVIEWS OF Port City Veterinary Referral Hospital IN Maine

Kathryn Bosyk

There is no compassion in this Animal EMER Hospital. My experience was that they rushed into a surgery which was needless and only hurt my pet. Then, there was no one after the surgery who cared enough to help. $6,000 for 2 days! They have offered me $500 because I have complained. It’s all about the $$. Go to Angell in Boston. Best care in the country. 1 star for cleanliness.

Visited the hospital for a brief visit where they checked vital signs, took temp, and spent maybe 15 minutes with the total. Cost was around $75. Went back a few months later for a different issue, spent same amount of time with vet but this time we needed x-rays. Visit alone was about $50 more, but the same things happened in both visits. Apparently the visit is at the discretion of the vet. Not impressed. There are two emergency vets in Portsmouth, I recommend the other one.

I called this vet (along with many others) on Saturday night during emergency hours when I was extremely worried about my blockage prone kitty. Not a single vet I called made me feel as cared for and taken seriously as this vet. He had not urinated in over 12 hours and because he very recently had a blockage I was in a bit of a panic mode. The vet techs I spoke to answered all of my questions and were compassionate towards me being a completely stressed out cat mom. They spoke with the vet and worked me through the issue I was having. Right before Oliver was about to be packed into his carrier crate he went in his litter box and peed. I think he knew it was a vet trip and he just wasn't having that. Yet this vet will 100% be where I will go if Oliver is ever in need of care during emergency hours. My vet recommends them, and they made me feel cared for, comfortable and confident in their services and compassion towards animals. Thank you to the kind folks I spoke to.

Wonderful experiences with the surgical staff. Care and compassion evident throughout the staff, at all hours. Consistently recommended by area vets for a reason.

First, no one is prepared for the cost of an emergency vet visit. If you are bring your pet to an emergency hospital, without insurance, you should know it’s never going to be inexpensive. My experience: Brought my little buddy because he was VERY ill. The Dr thoroughly explained the treatment plan (complete with cost breakdown). While I’ll admit she didn’t have the best bedside manner, she definitely seemed like she knew what she was doing. Yoda was there for four days. He deteriorated a little each day. The over night vets were the most compassionate people I think i’d ever encountered. At no point did anyone try to “sell” a treatment. They were upfront and honest about his care and potential future cost. Yoda did not get better. I think we all gave it our best - but at the end of the day it ways up to Yoda, and he was tired and very sick. The staff helped me make the best decision for Yoda. I can’t thank the staff enough for everything you did for my little fur baby. I believe they did everything they could to help Yoda.. Thank you Port City.. Thank you front desk, techs, nurses, Vet/Dr.s and Criticalists..

Their doctors and veterinary care team are great. They all have been very helpful and kind to our pet, and we have been seeing them for almost two years now. However, their communication system is a disaster. And, while some of them are really helpful, there are also really rude members in their front desk and/or in the team that answers your calls. You never ever can reach the person you need right away, ever! You need to call, and call back, and back ... and email and call, ... and maybe after all that half of your messages may be transferred to the person to whom the messages needs to go. And, I need to restate that this is not a one time issue, it has been the case throughout our experience with them and it never improved. Our pet has a chronic condition and this has been a constant struggle. Due to this extreme inefficiency he goes unchecked for prolonged periods at times. I am thinking that at this day and age, solving a communication inefficiency such as this one shouldn’t be too difficult. On top of it, I am assuming that most people are busy now a days so spending hours just to reach the person that you need to talk with, is unacceptable. And, this is totally unfair for their health team, since I think their doctors as well as the technicians are amazing. And, we are truly grateful for all their help and time. So, just to be clear, my rating above is an average of the two sides. I am not writing this review to gain points or to get a call from the institution (I honestly don’t want to deal with another phone call from them unless I have to since it is always a time and energy drain). But, I am sharing this review hoping that they may take such reviews seriously and update their system to the level deserving for their veterinary care team. And, I did share similar reviews with their internal review request system multiple times before, but not seeing much change, decided to try a public platform for a change.

My very sick Maine Coon was treated by the Internist department since October. After spending almost twenty thousand dollars and several visits over the last 4 months---being in direct contact with the internist department on a weekly basis, Trader sadly passed away at another veterinary hospital. The day he passed, I spoke with the liaison at Port City to cancel his upcoming appointments telling them Trader had passed. I never received a condolence call, card or any communication from the internist or the department. CAVES and 2 other veterinary clinics who knew Trader having treated him over his 11 years sent cards signed by everyone there, made calls and even made a donation to a rescue org in his name. To be clear, I'm satisfied with the care given by the internist. I don't expect Port City to go above and beyond like CAVES did, but it's very disappointing to feel treated like a number. A card of acknowledgement would have been nice. Either Port City is either too big/busy or the internist department is too busy to care. Very disappointed.

My dog had a seizure and they kept her overnight for a seizure watch I picked her up in the morning and she was doing fine. They gave me lots of information on seizures /epilepsy they were very helpful and kind

Morgan Palmer

Brought my dog in with serious cough, they did a 30 second "evaluation" and had no answers for what could have caused it. He was diagnosed the next day with kennel cough and they refused to credit any money back because he "wasn't diagnosed" with kennel cough with a lab test. Shady place that's just looking for your money and not to help, and director there is EXTREMELY rude and unhelpful. I'd recommend bringing your pet anywhere else if you want adequate treatment and professional staff.

Kind, responsive

Completely useless called in about my stung dog and they would not help me unless I made an account

Dr. Bliss is the most informative veterinarian I have ever worked with. He spent alot of time with us explaining every important detail. My dog sasha had to get surgery on her leg, and it was a very long process. He was very patient with us. I would highly recommend this hospital they are awesome.

Olivia Santos

Paid over $100 to find out my dog was just “tired.” I was expecting the bill to be a lot lower considering they literally did nothing except spew a few words out of their mouths.

This review took awhile to write as it's been a difficult journey after our cat that passed beginning of the year under an unfortunate situation. The staff was amazing although I hate to even bring this up but during our visit last February, we noticed the receptionist was either drunk or high. We're thinking she was under the influence of something as we did not smell alcohol. This person was out of it and loopy. That worried us when we first visited with our then sick cat. On the plus side, Dr. Berger, who had to bare us the bad news in the end, was just an amazing Doctor that was so kind and compassionate. That experience alone just made the situation a little easier knowing that we know Port City made the right decision. As sad as we were, we were finally at peace. I don't think I've cried that much for our cat that we've only had for less than few months. We still look back and was thankful at how we were treated by the doctor despite the rather odd behavior from the receptionist (which at that point we weren't even really concerned about). We are glad she's resting in peace now and not in pain. So thank you to Dr. Berger and the staff and Port City.

I have mixed feelings about this place. Some staff are nice. Some aren't. It does feel a lot like the visits are pointless and/or like the doc(s) are missing something with my pet. I can't tell if it's the nature of my pets conditions or if the vet is trying to milk getting money. The rooms are not cleaned and refreshed (just like many have said on here.) And when I brought it up in person, while I was there, they acted like it wasn't a big deal and that I was a diva for even mentioning it. Calling is an absolute waste of time. Their structure for calling is as well. And when you get someone on the phone, you can't always be sure to trust what is said or what is related. I asked to leave "urgent" on the message to have the doctor call me back, the woman I spoke with refused. She said they don't do that there, and that the box wasn't full. It's now afternoon the next day and I really need that call back!

These veterinarians are the best...Ive had to take my dog twice and both times i didnt even have to wait 5 mins and there best interest is always your animal...THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR EVERYTHING

Wes Allen

After hours of waiting, expensive tests, and they are still befuddled. Our vet solves the issue with ease. Try anywhere else first. The place was filthy, covered in dog hair that they didn't clean up. This place is gross-totally unsanitary.

I cannot say enough about the excellence of the Port City staff. I have been using their specialists for years with my working dogs. Getting through on the phone can, at times, be a bit of a wait, however, once you get through, the response is very quick and calming. Last year, I had to rush one of my dogs into Port City, after he had collapsed. From the moment we entered the facility, they began running tests on him, keeping me informed all the way. He was a big, sweet Rottweiler, who looks intimidating, yet everyone loved on him and he was happy there. Sadly, he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. The oncologist, Dr. Kow, and his team explained all of his odds of survival..the good and the bad. Thankfully, I had pet insurance on him since he was a puppy so we didn't need to make choices based on costs. We choose to give him a fighting chance and began chemotherapy, blood transfusions and a spleenectomy. All the way, the oncology team kept us informed of his chances and took our calls...day or night. We did have to let him go after almost 8 weeks of trying, he was too weakened. The staff were amazingly compassionate and many were crying with us, as they got to know him well. Many also told us that he had "given them a new perspective on Rottweilers" due to his sweet nature. I will forever be grateful for the care and compassion of the Port City staff. On Thanksgiving, my husband brought up a cake for the staff that were working on the holiday instead of being with their families.

Our sweet boy Kirby cat was 19 yrs old. We didn't have him all those years but the years we did have him were wonderful. Our sweet boy, two days after Christmas suffered what seemed to be a stroke then had a seizure after that. He couldn't hold himself or his head up and was having problems breathing. We had to make that very hard decision to end his pain and discomfort. We were told to go to Port City Vet and glad we did. They were very compassionate and did not rush us at all. We were put in a nice room to be alone with our little boy to spend as much time as we needed before the procedure. They explained everything that was going to happen to him. We held him in a thick blanket that they wrapped him in while it was done and it was very peaceful. We told them we wanted to bury him on our property. They took him to take out the IV and when they brought him back he was in what was a casket with a poem taped to the top and they got his paw prints on cards for us. They all showed compassion and gave their condolences as we left. I couldn't have asked for more. Thank you Port City Vet for your care during our loss.

I’ve had two guinea pigs for almost three years and one of them had an issue yesterday. My mom and I took him here right away because he was unable to move his lower half of his body, we received good news that we could go home for the night with a fluid pack under his skin and that we need to return in the morning to see the test results. Extremely impressed with how kind the vet was to my animal and I would recommend this place over any other vet!

Dr Nick Cassotis and all of the staff are amazing. They truly care about your pets. Dr Cassotis takes the time to fully explain all possible outcomes. We came here for a second opinion after a horrible experience else where. I would 1000% recommend Port City!

I just wanted to thank the team that helped my poor old gal last night. My parents dog had a bad seizure late last night due to a tumor behind her eye. The team took excellent care of her and despite having multiple patients at the time they were still able to get the job done in a reasonable amount of time. Additionally, my parents were very satisfied with the cost as it did not cost an arm and a leg as they were expecting it to. They also accepted care credit! Highly recommend.

If you need an emergency vet expect to spend a lot of money with this place. I took our poor cat in with a foreign body in her intestines, they charged me $3500.00 for this “routine, and easy procedure”. The vet called me the next day to let me know I could pick up the cat. She then tells me I owe another $200. They are price gouging and taking advantage of people when they are in need of their service. I think they forgot they are not the only emergency vet clinic around.

Darrell Pack

Changed for supplies and procedures that were not or should not have been performed. I have been happy with them in the past but I have lost my trust.

Megan E

My dog Winter has been a patient there a few times now. She most recently was seen by Dr. Clode for surgery. Everyone was fantastic with her and with us. We would definitely recommend Port City :)

Brought my dog Stoli there for spine and hip surgery 4 years ago and she still is on top of her game..highly recommended

Nick Berthiaume

Very unprofessional, my dog was taken in for stitches 10 days later they said it was ok to remove them. They removed them and the wound opened up again and they want to charge again to replace them. It’s not about the money my poor dog is in pain and they won’t help to make it right

I would have given this hospital a 5 stars until I received the itemized bill. I was referred to Port City by my vet. The receptionist at Port city scheduled an appointment for me with a surgeon. I met with him for close to an hour and was charged $172 for consult. Completely understandable and reasonable. After learning that I needed to have the procedure done by an internal medicine vet I was then charge another $172 for a 5 minute meeting. Seriously!!! Aside from this ridiculous charge, the staff and veterinarians were AMAZING!!

Was forced to go to the ER while on the vacation and I was so lucky to find this incredible veterinarian practice. Every one was amazing and my dog was very happy.

Using it for several years for my cats emergencys. New Years eve 2008-2009 took a very sick 6 months old kitten being treated by my vet but infection was lingering.Care given was compassionate, educated and the latest treatments. They changed meds, upping the strength, gave fluids IV and dx'd it perfectly.Have brought several cats for different illnesses when my vet wasn't available and was completely satisfied. They explain the cost up front, offer choices of treatment and are pretty open about it.Yes I have had some bills that ran 300-400 but when I compare it to what my vet charges they really aren't out of line.I have traveled to Tufts in North Grafton and really find them outstanding, a bit more expensive and it is an hour and 20 minute ride. For emergencies this clinic in Portsmouth is the answer. They have moved by the Newington Mall at 15 Piscataqua Drive next to the great Buffet II.

They took great care of our little dog today. They gave her fluids and medicine for her diarrhea and were very reasonably priced. She is already feeling better!

Superb emergency vet, with 24 hour services and a friendly staff of highly competent professionals. We've used them for years during pet emergencies and they always do a great job.

Virginia Lee

Our dog swallowed a popsicle stick whole today. I called and they directed us, took information about our dog over the phone to save time on our arrival and brought us directly into a room when we got there. They updated us on the plan of care and time frame, it was obviously very busy and they made every effort to keep us comfortable through the process. This was our family's 3rd visit here with three different dogs/situations and every time I am amazed at the quality and affordability of the services we have been provided, especially in an emergency situation. We couldn't be more grateful to their multiple staff membership for their professionalism and empathy. We are very fortunate to be home tonight knowing our boy is okay and that if we ever need help in an unfortunate situation, Port City Veterinary care is available.

Dr Berger was AMAZING! She looked at the situation and realized not only my cat needed care but that I was a human who needed help too! My last trip there was a 1 star this time & this Dr should be 10 star! Knowing I couldn't afford all the bells & whistles of an emergency clinic on a very limited budget, she gave me friendly advice to make it thru the night to see her reg vet. I will recommend to EVERYONE Dr Berger cares about animals and their owners! I'm forever grateful ❤

Everyone has been very nice and helpful. Our dog loves his vet tech and the oncologist we are seeing (Dr. Koh) has been fantastic throughout our dog's treatments.

My 4 month old Mastiff ate a sock. After speaking with my regular vet Saturday morning, he suggested that if symptoms worsen to call Port City. Symptoms did get worse, and so when I called the lady who answered was very nice and compassionate. Upon arrival the secretary (I forgot his name) came right around and met my puppy and comforted him. Dr. Berger was excellent. She was upfront about the cost of xrays before she did them. When the xray was suggestive of a blockage Dr. Berger went over the options we had and the risks and benefits of each one. She didn't make me feel like I should choose one or the other, she let me decide based on the information she gave me. I am a critical care nurse, so I did have some background knowledge to help me decide, and she was understanding of that also. She went and typed up the three options and how much each one would cost. I ended up choosing to have subcutaneous fluids and bring him home to watch him hoping it would pass. He has passed another sock in the past, and his current symptoms weren't suggestive of a complete blockage. Early in the morning, after a successful passing of the sock, I called back and spoke with Dr. Berger and asked for anything I should do now that he has passed the sock. She was very detailed and helpful. Any kind of emergency visit is going to be expensive, and I don't like reading reviews that complain of the price. Everyone at Port City was very upfront of the cost, even when I first called before even arriving, the lady on the phone told me how much it was going to be just to be seen. It was very clean. There was FREE coffee! (and it was good coffee too). Everyone was so nice. When I was trying to leave and my puppy wouldn't get up off the floor to walk, that awesome secretary came over again and played with my puppy until he was up on his feet and wagging his tail! It was a great experience for such a scary situation!

Expensive but what can I expect when my dogs only have emergencies in the middle of the night on weekends? They often want to keep the dog overnight, which we don't like to do. We'd do it if there was a need for fluids, etc after an accident or something but not just for observation. I had to be really stern with one doctor there about it because she kept pushing. Otherwise, I feel like the vets are helpful, calm, courteous, and give us lots of information and options.

Our Bernese Mountain pup was stricken with GVD (twisted gut) today. We went to one er vet who told us after we got there (and she knew we were coming) and this is a life-threatening thing for a dog. We wasted 45 minutes on this. When we got to Port City, they whisked him right and and got started IMMEDIATELY. Lauren the first vet we talked with was super professional and incredibly kind and reassuring. Everyone there was. The treatment we got, and that our pup got was first class. If you need emergency care... and you live near Portsmouth... go HERE. Do not go to the otjere ER vet clinc in Portsmouth. You can read my review on them as well. Thanks to all the folks ap Port City. You are all real pros, the vets, the vet techs, the front desk folks... everyone. It looks like Earnie is going to be okay!!!

Top notch in all areas. Have taken my dog and cat here in times of need (when their regular vet is unavailable) and will continue to do so - always friendly and courteous and compassionate!

I brought my senior dog, Lex, to this office a few times over the last few years. They were amazing. Patient. Kind. Understanding. Honest. Unfortunately, I had to put Lex down last October and again, they were very helpful through the painful process. I have another dog that I will continue to bring here for years to come, if needed. Thank you!

Growing up we had 3 family dogs, and I recently adopted my own rescue pup now that I’m out of college. Needless to say, I have brought my pets here many times. The staff here has always been knowledgeable, understanding, and supportive. I have had experience with multiple doctors there and many technicians. All of them have provided fantastic care for our furbabies. The staff also created and provides different treatment plans that you can choose from. Dr. Berger sat and spoke with me about my options for a good 20 minutes while I mulled over different tests and treatments for my pup to have. She made sure that I understood what each item was for and that I did have alternatives to choose from. The only reason why I gave them 4/5 stars is due to the price of some services, specifically the complete blood panel. I am 100% sure that there is a justified reason for their pricing on that item but for someone who lives paycheck to paycheck, it makes for a tight squeeze. •I will reiterate that most of the services that my pets have received are fairly priced and there have been many times that I’ve escaped Port City with a lesser bill than at my dog’s primary vet.•

I was referred to this vet and they are a very shady place. They kept me there for hours doing countless tests on my cat telling me she had stage 5 cancer. Call me two days later telling me she has no cancer at all. They tell me it’s an infection but they can’t figure out what kind of infection but will likely need expensive medication for life. They want to keep her overnight, solely for “observation”. I said no because that was unnecessary and another $500 on top of the thousands already spent. They tell me they had no answers for anything after all these tests and wanted to test for something that already came back negative, using a “more reliable” test this time. I finally took her elsewhere for a second opinion and they immediately could figure out what was wrong and can be treated and go away. The staff and doctors were very nice and empathetic, but they have no business scamming innocent people like this. They jump through hoops trying to explain their reasoning for all the testing and why it’s so necessary, manipulating the customers. They caused me so much emotional and financial stress.

They're all about the $$$$$ - My dog ate some chocolate and threw all of it up after some peroxide. He is a 110 lbs and was seemed fine after, we called just to get some advice and they would not give any and just said to bring him in. We asked on the cost and they said it would be $85.00 and upon speaking with the Dr. they said around $100.00 because of the fluid injection. They bring him out back and upon leaving the Bill is $295.00 This place is clearly a dishonest business, I will not every return here again. It turned out they gave him 3 injections, $38, $38 and $133 and just walking in the door was $85. When bringing my dog in the back.. We notified them that he can be aggressive towards other dogs and they said ok, when the door re-opened he was pulling the nurse down the hall snapping at another dog. I don't understand at all why they couldn't give the injections in the office with myself..it was a complete lack of thought and could have resulted in further injury on mine or another owners dog.

Do yourself a favor spend your hard earned money with an outfit that sees you pet as a loved family member rather then $$$$! If I could give a minus star I would. Read their response at the bottom. We were not asking for medical advice as our dog was already being treated with antibiotics from our own vet. We were just looking to make our sick dog comfortable. Requested advice over the phone regarding our dogs UTI. Despite having spent significant monies (in excess of $10K) with this operation for testing, MRI etc., they refused to offer any suggestions for OTC options stating they hadn't seen her in a year. All we wanted was to make our already ill (on antibiotics ) little girl comfortable until she could see her own vet Monday morning. Joe refused to even consult with an onsite vet. Unacceptable. All this outfit is about is making money.

I waited two hours to be seen and ended up leaving to go to the other 24 hour vet in Newington. I understand it's an emergency clinic but be honest with me, don't tell me 30 minutes and then an hour later tell me another vet is coming in in 30 minutes and then an hour later tell me something critical is coming and you'll see us in 30 minutes.

I can't thank the people who work here enough for their help and service that provided to a severely neglected dog (not ours) that we brought in with multiple ailments. They quickly diagnosed the issues we brought him in for and also determined that he had a double ear infection that we weren't even aware of. They treated all of these issues and provided us with medicines and instructions for getting the dog well. So impressed and so thankful.

Jackie Ransom

My wife and I visited Port City when our 11 year old cat suddenly started having breathing troubles. The staff was kind, compassionate and addressed the immediate needs of our cat first before sitting down with us and giving us many care options for him. Unfortunately our darling did not pull through but they helped lay out choices for how we wanted his final moments to be handled and gave us ample time with him. Dr. Berger was very sweet, knowledgeable and understanding as well. Their facility is very large spotless and the other animals we saw in their care seemed happy and comfortable. Thank you guys so much for everything you did to help us through Shinya's troubles.

Haley Tyler

I took my sick cat here in January for him acting lethargic and not eating for a few days. I was very concerned about him and when I got there they took me into a room immediatly. A tech came in very shortly after and when he was done, the doctor came in probably within 5 minutes. I was very impressed with the timely manner and felt my cats care was important to them. The doctor at no point made me feel pressured into exams and gave me all options without pressuring me in any way. She, as well as the doctor I saw the next day, both seemed to care about what worked best for me and my cat rather than worried about getting more money out of me. I couldn't have asked for a better experience!! Thank you to Doctor Maffezzoli, Doctor Incorvaia, and all the wonderful techs and staff!!

kirsten lynn

Awesome staff and service, felt welcomed and felt like they understood my needs and my fur baby’s needs.. we came in with my cat who had URI and wasn’t able to breathe very well, they called available vets and tech to the lobby stat to take my animal to get him on oxygen.. which was so awesome.. then we sat for like maybe 30 minutes waiting for the doctor, Dr. Elise I think, super awesome and nice, talked with us for about like 20 minutes discussing options and outcomes and prices for the services.. and they are reasonable, expensive sorta but not bad.. we received a steroid, an anti vomiting medicine, and a sedated throat exam for the fur baby.. and it was all under $300 which is great! And the vet tech was so nice I wish I got his name he truly deserves to be recognized, He was very calm and helped us understand and told us how to administer and help us with when to give the medicine and he was just so nice!! We did have to wait a hour to get our animal back but it wasn’t a long wait, it was during a influx of patients, during that time we talked to the tech, paid for the services, and had some coffee. Really great experience and very nice people! I recommend this place 100% ❤️❤️ Will definitely go here again if need be. And my fur baby is doing much better!

Prompt, professional and very caring - listened. I had a minor issue with my dog and it’s being taken care of In Top form. I haven’t seen the bill yet....but best to write a review before that happens - I’m here for the doctors above all and the health of my pets!

Took my kitty in to the hospital late at night for a pretty sever wound. When I got there I was brought right to an exam room and a vet tech was there within a minute. Dr. Berger was wonderful and explained things well. She had great compassion towards my very angry and scared cat. She updated me continuously and took me in the back to see my kit before I left. The services are not cheap but you truly get what you pay for the office was clean and comfortable and there when I needed it. I'm assured that my cats getting great care. The doctors clearly care. They came up with a plan that would suit my cats needs and make her the most comfortable that she can be.

There is slight issue with communication & contacting the pet owner. They didn't contact me when I could pick up my pet from minor surgery? When I called them to find out, I couldn't get any information? No one knew? Than when I did pick up my pet, I didn't receive a evalution that was clear or precise to show the breeder, just doctors notes. The eye doctor Cassotis said he'd write one up, but almost three weeks have gone by and still nothing and my breeder is wondering what is taking so long?!?

We took our chihuahua Nikki here after she passed this morning. I'm from ny and my girlfriend is from boston. The vet in boston were Nikki went was closing and gave us this hospital name to drop off nikki. They were amazing to us and very comforting. They couldn't have been better in any way. They gave us time to say goodbye to our little baby and actually cared and took ever step to make us feel better. I can't say enough nice things to all the workers who came in contact with us. Once we decide it's right to get another animal we will be bringing them to this hospital for everything. They deserve a star on their crown like my grandfather always said to me as a child. Losing a family member is hard enough and I couldn't have asked for a better place to leave Nikki. If any of you are reading this thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your warm kindness in our darkest hours. We truly appreciate everything you have done.

I was one stressed out Mama when my boy popped a staple after a recent neutering surgery. They were really busy but still managed to get me all checked in, answer my questions, and fix my boy up all in what seemed like no time! Staff couldn't have been kinder, would definitely trust them again should accidents happen!

We were traveling to Maine with our elderly, extra large dog over Labor Day weekend when he began to have trouble getting into our vehicle. He has had difficulty with his right hip before, but it seemed like it was under control until this incident. Fortunately, Port City was right along rt. 95, and we called ahead to make sure they could see us. We received excellent care immediately upon our arrival. Amy, the receptionist, was so kind to our dog, affectionately calling him "Charlie Bear," the Bear part because of his size. Samantha, the technician, made friends with him immediately while taking his history. He was seen by Dr. Ginger Berger. Often he is very shy, hiding behind his dog-dad or dog-mom, but he was willing to go off with Dr. Berger for a detailed exam. She ended up prescribing Rimadyl and a pain med med and gave us a sufficient supply to cover our entire vacation. Charlie was able to walk normally and jump into our car and trailer by the next evening. Just as an aside, this Sunday evening trip to a specialized veterinary clinic cost us much less than a visit to our regular vet practice in suburban Washington DC during normal hours of operation. Even the meds were cheaper! This place is a gem!

This review is a bit overdue: In late January of this year I came home from work to my dog Barley unable to stand or walk, trembling, and in an excruciating amount of pain. I was sure he was dying, and drove over to Port City. I was seen quickly, and everyone on staff (from the receptionist, to the Vet Tech, to Dr. MacLauchlan) was so helpful and gentle with Barley. They were also super nice when I was bawling my eyes out in the exam room/waiting rooms. They diagnosed him with an auto-immune disorder that resulted in polyarthritis and all of his joints swelling very painfully. Beyond that, they were good about giving me updates on him the next day, and when he was doing better than they'd predicted they let me take him home a day early, even though they could have easily avoided giving me a partial refund if they chose to keep him for another night. We followed their aftercare instructions, arranged the recommended follow-ups, and Barley hasn't had a flare-up since! So a big thanks to Dr.Maclauchlan and the rest of the Port City team for being so wonderful with Barley!

Every single staff member was extremely patient, understanding, empathetic and very engaged and invested in caring for my dog Lilly. They gave me my precious girl back to me when I could very well have lost her. I highly recommend this amazing team when your precious fur babies need expert medical care.

Went in for a badly broken nail on our older dog. Wait time was kinda long, but obviously we were not the priority. Some other animals came in shortly after we arrived who needed care more urgently. Once the doctor came, it was a quick trip to the back to remove the broken piece and instructions for epsom salt soaks. No pushing medications or extra cutting, but a back up plan for if infection or pain set in. Everyone we encountered was pleasant and they kept us up to date of why the wait was long (even got my boy a blanket to lay of while we wait). Overall, very pleased!

Love, love, LOVE my experience here- far superior to the other ER which we had frequented before we found Port City (I have a mischievous lab!)- Dr. Hillman is amazing and truthfully, everyone there has been amazing. I wish they could be our family vet- but alas, they cannot. And as for the reviewers speaking of money... I actually think that they are NOT all about the money- they've done their best to try to work with me, despite their extreme limitations. They're highly trained & specialized care-givers, and that does cost money, but they do have big hearts. I HIGHLY recommend them...

Over a month ago I brought my cat in inquiring about these sesame seed looking things I found near where he was sleeping. I even brought in a sample of the "seeds" for them to look at. Befuddled, they told me they had no idea and sent us away. Now over six weeks later with the seeds still persisting, a google search and a trip to a different vet reveal they are in fact very common signs of a tapeworm. So disappointed that my cat has been sick for this long and that they just turned us away without a clue about this very common sickness.

my girls got heart issues and breathing issuee.. came on real fast. I got her pet insurance with the help of Kingston plaistow animal hospital. they are not 24 hr so when shes not doing ok I bring her to port city. they r the tufts of the animal world. beyond basic care... they explain everything and tell you price range upfront... very good with keeping her away from other dogs and keeping her BP and anxiety down. I love both her vets I have no issues at all. they are amazing. and she doesnt like many places so for her to lay down and rest in the office... that tells me so much about the people here.

I love Port City Vet! My 110lb. senior dog needed surgery on his knee and I was very stressed out about it but Dr.Hillman-(awesome) and the staff at Port City were so nice and very informative. They kept in touch with me every step of the way which was great. The place is very clean, I left feeling like my dog was in the best hands that he could be. I would recommend anybody and everybody to Port City Vet! LOVIN AT YA PORT CITY!!! OXOXOX

They did nothing for my puppy, he sat in a cage on oxygen and that was it for two days as he got worse and worse and passed away. They tried charging use 2100$ and after we noticed Alot of it was high bloated pricing they came back with 1600$ hmmm. I feel very strongly that if I went to another vet my pup would be here today.

I have brought both my dogs and a couple of cats here and everyone is kind, helpful and pleasant to work with. It starts as soon as you walk through the door with the front desk staff and extends to everyone that comes in contact with you and your pet. I highly recommend Port City Hospital.
