HORRIBLE treatment to my mother, VERY rude staff member. My mother found herself unable to properly care for her dog, and realized she had to bring him back, which was a very hard and agonizing decision for her. She did not want to give him up but knew it was best for the dog. When she went to Kennebec AWS she was treated EXTREMELY rudely by a staff member, who would not look at my mother at all (when she realized why my mother was there), accused her of not trying hard enough to care for the dog and not trying the “right things”. She also said that my mother didn’t try the Kennebec AWS training program, even after my mother said she had tried MANY other training programs because Kennebec is a far drive from our home. The staff member said all of this to my mother loudly IN FRONT OF OTHER PEOPLE! Very inconsiderate and uncalled for.

Very upset. Called yesterday not long before the shelter closed to confirm they still had a dog named Snowball that I had been looking at for weeks online. Told the man that answered all my questions I was coming in today with my dog from Central NH. A 1 hour and 40 minute trip each way for me. Got to the shelter and they adopted the dog out from underneath me. Never dealing with this shelter again. Literally in tears in my car at the moment. They adopted the dog out while I was at a pit stop to buy a spare collar and leash in case we brought the dog home today, wasted my money and gas for nothing. None of the other dogs at the shelter are a good fit for my home. Don't expect much from this shelter. My Great Dane was along for the trip to make sure she got a long with him too. Now I am going home empty handed.

The staff here is truly amazing. They helped us find a dog that works best with our family, and allowed us to come back every day until we were able to take the pup home. Staff were very accommodating and clearly cared for the animals there. They were able to provide a lot of knowledge on each animal and what will be best for them.

Again , my family found a furbaby to give a forever home after the passing of an aged, beloved one. She's a fighter, and it was a battle to get her into the carrier, but we love her dearly. She has begun to trust us, and to relax to her forever home. You all are the best , and Ashes came to us in beautiful shape , for all her resistance , biting and clawing: all your pet loving workers , staff and volunteers are hero's to me. Thank you !!! very very rude and unfriendly staff. was unable to adopt the cat i wanted due to not having taken my current cat to the vets for a “yearly checkup” despite only owning him for a few months. picked another cat to adopt, started filling out paperwork for said cat, and a man walked in and said he wanted the same cat i did. they proceeded to tell me i was unable to adopt the cat and gave it to the man. then basically kicked me out after having been there for over 2 hours.

Staff were unhelpful and rude. None of them approached me and when I asked questions they didn’t give helpful answers but were very dismissive. They should be making it their main concern to give these animals homes.

I volunteer at this shelter almost weekly and I absolutely love it! Before and after the recently completed renovations, it has been a great place to volunteer and visit! The staff are kind and nice, particularly the Volunteer Director Rachel, who has always helped me out and given me something to do! I greatly recommend anyone interested to visit this place and spend time with the animals here! And the people definitely don't bite. :)

Really nice people and a gorgeous, newly renovated building. Last time I went there there were very few animals but I got my kittens: sugar and spice there this summer and they were very easy with the adoption process and they understand that some pets are not right for some families.

Staff is very friendly and helpful. Place is very clean and a no-kill shelter! We adopted our 3yr old girl here in May and I couldn't be more happy with our new dog. She's so well behaved and affectionate. According to her paperwork she came all the way from Missouri before being brought up from a rescue in Massachusetts 6 days before her adoption! So glad they give animals like her a second chance at life!

My boyfriend and I fell in love with one of the dogs online. We went in the next day to hopefully take him home. When we arrived we found out the he was on hold for a lady that didn’t even pay the holding fee because her card was declined. We were told the the holding was over at 11 the next day. We went back at 11 dog was still there but the staff still told us we were unable to have the dog because they now want the holding to be until the end of the day. There was only one staff member that seemed to care for the dogs and had the best interest in the dogs. Jen is one of the “managers” she directly lied to our faces saying she new nothing about situation but later we found out that she’s the one that said it was okay for this lady not to pay the holding fee. These people do not have the best interest for their animals, if they did they wouldn’t have given this dog to a lady that can’t pay a $50 holding fee, how is she paying for dog food! We are so disappointed and will be taking this issue to higher management. Multiple staff lied directly to our faces and they don’t have the best interest for these animals.

The cat rooms are overwhelmingly wonderful for the adoptable fuzzy kitties. No better way to find a forever friend then to interact so closely with them. I adopted a chinchilla last year and this rescue was wonderful!

My kitten Cheif escaped from our home. A women that worked next door found him. She called ACO in Sanford who picked him up and brought him here. They adopted my kitten to a new family on 7/7/17. I called them on 7/9/17 and was advised that they do not have a missing kitten there. The manager states she will not call the adoptive family due to their policy all adoptions are final. I don't feel this Shelter is operated from what's best for the animal and families. But what's best for their non profit organizations customers. If it was to help the animals, then give the adoptive family the unfortunate story let them decide if the would like to reunite Cheif with his family and adopt another kitten in need of home instead of one that has one already

I have been there many times but today was very different,Its hard to see them all in ages, hungry and kinda smelly, Anyway I went today to adopt a 6 yr old jack russel and I couldnt take him because I have a cat and apparently he will kill my cat , so instead of asking if I need or want anything else they were just plain rude ,I get sad everytime i go but today...was a bad one

I went to visit a dog that was given up by my neighbors, Roscoe , he is currently at the shelter. Roscoe loves to play and is very eager to learn!! Loves my little dogs, always very gentle with them. Kennebunk shelter is beyond amazing, the staff there is so friendly and accommodating!! Not to mention the cleanest shelter I have ever been to!! Thank you for the awesome job you all do there!!

All of the dogs seem comfortable and greet workers with tails wagging, etc. it is obvious they are well cared for. I enjoy going there and helping socialize dogs by taking them for walks and patting them. I notice dogs seem to find forever homes pretty quickly which makes me happy. Please keep up the good job!!!

Such a nice group of people. Very helpful when it came to selecting a dog for our family. Full service including some vaccinations and electronic chips. Many gift items for your pets available. They were undergoing Renovations the last time we were there. Sometimes, they have cats that are free! This is not a kill shelter - thank God!

Some of the staff were not friendly and as you walk in they do not explain the process/rules ..... so then some of the staff yell at you......I was interested in adopting a dog but left without a dog. I have adopted 2 pets from the shelter and they used to be a lot more helpful and staff was a lot more pleasant

Animal Welfare Society is well rounded with a foster program and low cost veterinary treatment for those on limited incomes. If you can't commit to a permanent pet, please offer to foster short term as fostering saves lives.

Went on 3/09 to look at getting the German shepherd Adidas, while my sister was intrested in Otto, they were in the outside area so we headed out there, a gentleman came out and told us that they were bringing some more dogs out to put in the gates, we asked if we should go inside but he said it was fine as long as we stayed wear we were, over by Otto and two German Shepards, but I don't think either of them were Adidas. Two girls brought out two dogs that they put in the same area away from us, while I was letting the Shepards smell my hand, and they were licking me, so I pet them a bit while my sister enjoyed watching auto play about in the snow. The new dogs were barking and got the German Shepards to bark, which let to the girls demanding we get away from that area and leave. I was very shocked at their rudeness, and confused. We went back inside the building, and I still wanted to meet Adidas. I tried to find someone to help me, perhaps I could give him a walk. They recently renovated and it was confusing, I didn't know who to talk to, and at that point my sister just wanted to leave because we had been there so long. So we left. Very disappointed considering this is the closest animal shelter to me.

Found a stray cat and wanted to adopt him so I had animal control bring him down to aws to prep him for adoption. They neutered, vaccinated and chipped him. He was available in 4 days. Thank you aws for all your help.

Sad I have to give one star!!! These people do not want to help animals or families they want to sell dogs and make money. my 4 y/o American bulldog got sick cuz he ate raw meat due to my fridge pooping the bed. and all they tell me to do is surrender him cuz I can not afford to bring him to the vets right now. I also told them I have a ton of dog meds and asked what I could give him and they can not help. it's all about money ether way u look at it ether bring ur animal in or they want u to surrender him so they can sell him on u! Heartless!

I recently adopted a rat named Norma from this shelter. She came pre-treated for mites just in case and with medication for her upper respiratory infection. They gave me all of her medical papers as well as a certificate for one free vet exam. They were incredibly helpful and kind the whole time and the place was wonderful. The cage that my rat was in at the shelter was amazing with tons of places to climb and hang out and toys to play with. This was true for all of the other enclosures I saw for cats, dogs, rabbits, etc. The place was wonderful and it made me so happy. Usually I feel quite sad leaving a shelter, but this time I felt good! The animals have a great place to stay until they find their forever homes.
