My family has been taking our cats to Lawrence Vet Hospital since we moved to Lawrence in 2012, and we are so grateful to the doctors, vet techs, and staff there. Dr. Kraft and Dr. Johnson are very knowledgeable and are able to answer any questions we have. When a kitty is sick, they always explain all the options and give price estimates for each option. The vet techs are always as gentle as possible to check up on the nervous kitties, and answer any questions we have. The staff at the front desk is also extremely helpful and kind. And they usually have pets up front greeting us! When our old girl Chloe was ready to say goodbye, everyone at Lawrence Vet Hospital was so wonderful to us. Their many small acts of kindness that day and the following days meant so much to our family. I recommend this vet to all my friends in Lawrence. It is a wonderful place filled with people who love animals!

I also like that they are easy to contact during the day - I'm very busy at work and can't always talk on the phone, they are easily reachable via email and very responsive. It's nice to get email reminders so my dog never misses any appointments, too. They also have very good hours of availability for people who work. They have half days on Saturdays and are open until 7pm two days a week.

I've been bringing my dog here since he was a puppy and he's now about a year and a half. I always saw Anna Johnson, DVM and was very pleased. However, the last time I saw her my dog had an ear infection and acted as most animals do when they are hurting and don't want to be touched, which is unpleasantly. However, I set up an appointment to have my dog neutered and considering we'd never had any other issues I figured this would be fine. Now, a little background on my dog. He's a breed that tends to be on dangerous breeds list and because of this I've done everything possible to make sure he doesn't earn that reputation. I've done early socialization, I've taken him to behavior specialists, and I work with a trainer that was recommended to me by a behavior specialist. Both the behavior specialist and the trainer to not think my dog is dangerous. However, I arrived to drop off my dog for his appointment and I'm immediately brought to wait in a room by a vet tech who is clearly terrified of my dog. Then the other vet, who I had never seen before, James Kraft DVM, walks in and as my dog walks up to sniff him he immediately turns around and leaves the room saying, "I'm not comfortable with this." He comes back in with a muzzle and after I've put it on my dog he tells me that my dog's normal vet had told him my dog was "unpredictable about when he's going to bite." My dog has never bitten anyone. He then proceeds to attempt to impress upon me the seriousness of a dog biting someone and tells me my dog acts this way because of his breed. However, he was not respectful and polite about any of this he spent 15 minutes or so berating me and speaking over me when I try to tell him that I've already seen behavior specialists after he tells me I need to see this specific one. He talks over me telling me that isn't good enough and neither is the trainer we work with, despite not letting me tell him the names of the people we had, and are seeing. After a straight 15 minutes or so of berating and acting aggressively towards me he attempts to touch my dog twice and no, at that point my dog was not friendly. He tells me we need to leave because he doesn't want to put his staff in danger and that would have been fine if he left it at that. I ask for the info of the behavior specialist and he leaves the room for several minutes then comes back in to tell me my info is at the front counter and to retrieve the muzzle. I go to the front counter to pick up my info and pick it up while all the employees avoid making eye contact with me and walk out the door. All the while, I hear Kraft, DVM ranting loudly in the background about how he's not going to put his staff in danger with that dog. Long story short, a few of the workers here have no idea how to behave around large dogs and blame it on the dog. Especially if you have a breed with a bad reputation. Being worried about my dog and the safety of your staff and other people is one thing, but being disrespectful and refusing to use the brain that, one assumes, had to have gotten you through veterinary school is another. If you have to see anyone make sure it isn't James Kraft, DVM because he wont listen to you and will talk down to you and express shock if your dog doesn't put up with someone acting that aggressively towards you.

We had a terrible experience at another vet after getting our kitty spayed and declawed. We called LVH the next day because we were really worried about her pain level and they got us right in. Dr. Anna was amazing... she got her fully checked out and provided us with everything they needed. Only 24 hours later our kitty is acting so much better! Thank you so much LVH for taking great care of us and getting us in right away so we could get her better! I will be bringing all my animals from here on!!! My cat has never done well at the vet, which gives me all sorts of anxiety when bringing him in. Whether it was the use of feliway or the building structure (we couldn’t hear any dogs from our room), or something else, he has never been so relaxed, even on his kitty sedatives. The doctor took the time to discuss which foods were best for him and why, and the reception was very friendly. It’s also great that they’re in network for companion protect insurance. Will definitely be returning.

We started taking Maggie our Boxer to Lawrence Veterinary Hospital in 2015 after a bad experience with another local vet. From our first visit, we have felt so welcomed and comfortable with both Dr. Kraft and Dr. Anna. The vet techs and front desk staff are always friendly and helpful too. I arrived in Lawrence with my first priority to find a vet for my fur babies. I selected this hospital because of the proximity to my home. I came in with 13+ year old male/female cats with multiple health challenges. Previously, they were seen at KSU Vet Hospital, so I was nervous about switching their care. Dr. Anna welcomed me (with my anxiety) and fur babies like we had always been clients. My first fur baby had to be put down weeks later by Dr. Kraft and again, I felt like we had been attended by Dr. Kraft for years-first time meeting him. They call my babies by name, acknowledge their quirky personalities and have never been rude or disrespectful to me or my babies-I consider myself to be a high maintenance client! LOL. New staff has since entered the business and I have moved on to new fur babies....so they continue with their top notch service to me and my fur babies. The expectations of the treatment of staff to clients/patients continues to be consistent...that I am thankful for as my fur babies can only tell you how they feel by their actions and Lawrence Veterinary Hospital seems to speak feline language.

Have been going to lawrence vet hospital for about a year now. I board my dog about once a month over a weekend. She has always been happy when we drop her off and when we pick her up. She is a small 12lb peekaboo. Never had any troubles until the last visit. When we go to pick her up she was not happy and seemed very distraught. When I went to pick her up she yelped as if hurt. I looked her over and she was fine. Then I was told they had given her heart worm injection without my consent, and wanted me to pay for it. I told them no I would like to speak to the vet. He wasn't in the office so he called me later in the week. James Kraft was very disrespectful to me and my pet. He told me I was a bad pet owner, he didn't even know my dog's name. He admitted it was a mistake on their part with the paperwork, but refused to pay $40 for the injection which I didn't not consent to. For 30min he continued to argue with me and tell me how wrong I was about not paying for the vaccine. He wouldn't stop, so I had to end the conversation and decided to pay and never come back there. That made him even more upset so he kept going on. I had to tell him to stop and get off the phone. I had appointment with the female vet and she is very nice, I would recommend her. Not James Kraft. The staff are very friendly and nice as well. It's a shame we had to take our business elsewhere because of one person.

First rate outfit. I have taken my animals to Dr Kraft since I first moved here in 1993, and cannot imagine taking them anywhere else. Excellent care for my animals, and everyone is also so nice to them and to me and my family. Can't imagine how anyone could find Dr Kraft to be anything other than professional and nice. I've seen him in action with dozens of people and pets over the course of half my life. That's what he is -- professional and nice, as is everyone there. I suppose everyone gets an off review from time to time. It doesn't phase me at all. Lawrence Veterinary Hospital is fabulous all the way around.

They are so wonderful, thorough, compassionate and truly care about your animals. I had been missing Dr. Kraft for the last 7 years and am thrilled to be having my dogs seen by him again. My dog LOVES this place! She has always been scared to go to any vet office, but she comes in here tail wagging and happy to greet everyone. You can tell that the workers really care about animals. My dog has had several health problems including broken teeth and liver elevations that were not properly diagnosed or addressed by other vets, even though my dog has been uncomfortable as a result of these issues. I really appreciate how thorough Dr Anna has been with my dog – she has been as determined as I am to get my girl healthy and feeling well again. I also really appreciate how caring and helpful the nurses and receptionists have been. I would highly recommend this hospital to anyone who views their dogs as their babies. If ever there were more concerned and accommodating doctors and staff at a veterinary hospital in Lawrence, Kansas, I have yet to meet them. The quality and respect given by Lawrence Veterinary Hospital to both animals and their people is above and beyond my usual experience at such a facility. I have had occasion to see both Dr. Kraft and Dr. Anna, and am entirely at ease having either one of them treat my dogs and cats. Also, the reception is manned by true angel-warriors, who take on the tough jobs and get them done with a twinkle and a smile. You would understand, if you knew that I am in the midst of an overseas relocation with my pets...

Okay, story time. My boyfriend and I bought the cutest mini Aussie/blue heeler mix in late July/early August from a lady outside Wichita; she was 11ish weeks old when we decided to go out of town for a week to see my boyfriend's family out of state, so I contacted LVH to board her, because she was so small and many places wouldn't take her because she was so young. The receptionist was SO sweet, and very helpful. Long story short, I received a call a little over 3 hours after dropping her off that she was severely anemic, so we rushed back to LVH from where we were staying that night and picked her up. The vet I spoke to on the phone, I believe his name was Drey, or something along those lines, told me there was only one overnight vet hospital in the area that could take her, so I phoned them and they told me their overnight fee was over $1000, and if my puppy needed a blood transfusion for the anemia, it would be more like $3000. As a college student, I was devastated at the thought; I can't afford a $3000 vet bill. Luckily, a internet search pulled up another 24 hour vet hospital in Topeka, whose fees were more like $80 a night. When we came to pick my puppy up from LVH, they asked if we were taking her to Blue Pearl, the expensive vet hospital, and I said no. The DVM responded with "I wouldn't do that if I were you" in a VERY condescending tone. My puppy had the best care in the world at the hospital I took her to, and recovered in a DAY. I can't speak for all of the vets in this practice, because I am sure they are very kind, as the techs and receptionists were, but this man is being paid by Blue Pearl to refer people. He does NOT have you or your pets best interest in his heart, only the interest of himself. Because of this experience, I will not be returning, and I advise anyone who does not want a skewed opinion of their pet's best interest to see this man.
