Waited about an hour in the back waiting room for the vet. Not sure why it took so long. Once she came, she wasn't very interactive with us or my sick cat. She didn't check my cats ears and didn't meet or discuss with us about what she thought the diagnosis was. She just told us to go to Ames for a $1500 test.

Sun Yanming

It is okay they really charged me A LOT OF MONEY. As long as my cat is okay, I can accept it. But today, when I took my cat home, he was all wet with his bottom and one of his nail is missing. It's just 7 degrees outside and because they only showered the buttom I had no idea until I took him home. He was wet and bleeding. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS VETERINARY TO ANYONE.

Rosemary Stark

Took my fur baby to IVS on recommendation from my personal vet. Best decision ever because my baby survived his illness and is doing absolutely wonderfully now. They saved his life and we are both extremely grateful!

They were there when we needed them. And we know where to go if another emergency arises.

Thank you for the wonderful care you provided Cooper!! Professional, caring and excellent emergency veterinary services!

IVS has been nothing but caring loving staff. They know my furbaby by name and they're the only vet he feels comfortable with when Im not with him. I don't even take him to his normal vet bc they don't even compare and have the passion like IVS. thank you!

Most amazing staff. They took great care of all of us. Treated us like family.

Very compassionate and understanding glad we visited them. Made our difficult decision bearable.

This place needs a major overhaul or even shut down. They only care about money. As soon as you walk in they tell you everything has to be paid for that day. I understand that's how they stay open, but there's no empathy and what they charge is astronomical. I also feel with all certainty that the vet lied to me about what was wrong with my pet in an attempt to get more money out of me, which would have put my pet through more suffering for nothing. And the whole while I was there the vet was trying to push me to get a loan through Wells Fargo or borrow money from family. Never was there a mention that there are organizations where you can apply for assistance with emergency pet care. In the end my pet did not survive. And what would have cost me maybe $300 at my normal vet(Who is actually pretty pricey, but I go to them because they're actually empathetic.) cost $1,000 here. I wish I had taken my pet ANYWHERE else.

I could not say enough good things about this place. They always treated my dog with respect and made me feel like he was their #1 patient. They worked with me financially and were super understanding of everything. I ended up having to put my dog down over the weekend and they were ready for me, remembered both my dog and me (even though I had only been there one other time) and were very empathetic. The on-call vet was so nice and calming and let me cry like a baby with no judgment. He explained what he was doing while he was doing it and made the process go as smooth as possible. They ended up getting a cement paw print from my dog when he passed that I could bake to harden it with my dogs named engraved to give to me as a keepsake. I will cherish that forever. When I went to go pick up the remains, they were so nice and included a sweet poem from my dog to be with a heart cut in half that I could keep and the other half was with the remains for my dog to keep. I will cherish these things forever. I HIGHLY recommend going here.

I took my Min Pin to check her nose because it was bleeding, she was constantly sneezing and had been all day. The veterinarian- Kevin L. Pottorff was not helpful from the beginning he was rude and very sarcastic toward me and my dog...(she was loose in the room, we were waiting....then he came in and made a snobby comment to grab my dog because she could "bite his legs".... I thought that's not nice at all.. I said she isn't that way, he kept being a smart mouth.) Sad... He told me his guesses she might have this or that but he couldn't tell me for sure.. Then later after I paid hes attitude was nicer he told me what he thought her sneezing and bleeding was.. In that last minute i felt real help.. I won't go there again. The estimates are expensive and there not explained fully..I should have waited to take her to her regular vet that could answer my questions, instead of spending 60 dollars for guesses and 10 min of nothing. I'm not trying to be mean, its true.

Maya Lartius

Very knowledgeable and helpful staff! So thankful they were open on a Saturday late at night!

Amy Greiner

My cat was having cardiac distress. When we arrived We were not greeted or acknowledged. After 10 minutes waiting to be checked in the receptionist told us oh well your cat looks stable as if there was nothing wrong with him. She was very unempathetic. I will say once we spoke with the Dr. we were very pleasantly happy with the Dr who consoled is and showed the upmost respect for our situation and her knowledge of the condition. If it wasn’t for this wonderfully kind and knowledgeable Dr. we would never go back.

Ashley Hunt

I had to take my dog here on a Saturday night after he got into something toxic. I really appreciated the staff not being judgmental for a dog getting into something he shouldn't have. The best part of the staff was that they continually stressed they were open all night and that I did not need to hesitate to call to check in on my dog at any time. They understand pets are family and that owners are worried when they are in emergency care. I called to check in on my dog and they immediately put me on the phone with the vet who walked me through all updates, no matter how small. Thank you so much for taking care of my dog!

Wilhelmus VanderKallen

Thank you for being open on Sunday :)

Great staff and very knowledgeable. Clean building. Took my dog here for emergency services and was very happy with the care, communication, and patience of everyone.

Yes, they're expensive. I personally think they're worth every cent. I have found them to be totally top notch. I've been to this facility for some very painful situations with my pets. They've always been professional, patient and kind. They take the time to tell you your options. They allow you the time to think about them. They're just really a great bunch of nice people. I really cannot recommend them enough. They cut the cancer out of one of my dogs who is clear of cancer today. They put down another of my precious dogs - with great respect and patience for us grieving and crying. We were... really ... freaking out... but they were so kind. Nothing but the highest kudos for IVS! Thank you!

I took my puppy Malachai in there at 4 this morning, due to some lacerations from his harness on his "armpits." From the second I walked in they were friendly and kind to me, as well as Malachai. They were very knowledgable. Hopefully I wont have any more emergencies anytime soon, but I know if I need to go anywhere, I'd definitely choose to come back here. Thank you so much for helping out my little man.

My dog has lymphoma. When he was diagnosed.... He had weeks to live. The Iowa Veterinary Specialties Clinic has a dog chemotherapy doctor! I had no idea they even existed! Dr Greene and the entire staff are extremely professional, kind, and I am thankful for every one of them. He has done amazing with the chemo and they treat him like he's one of their own. Couldn't be happier with his care

Very pleased with the care my dog received. The doctor was thorough with explaining things, showed care and comfort towards myself and my dog, went over the costs before they did anything, provided a discharge plan that made sense for my pup. Sudden things with your pet is scary for they are our loved ones! If anyone who is a pet owner they know that a trip to the vet isn't cheap, but neither is a trip to the hospital. I appreciated the fact that they went over the costs before doing anything. I would definitely go here again.

I took my dog in for an emergency visit at midnight. The doctor, technicians, assistants and receptionist were all incredibly knowledgeable, sympathetic and helpful...they even made me coffee! They were great tailoring their expertise to my budget and were graciously understanding of my monetary constraints. I didn't expect an animal E.R. visit to be cheap...but they came in under my available fund limit and took care of my best friend. Thank you!

Molly A.

They are a kind, compassionate, and efficient staff. Took very good care of our dog and communicated very well with us. Highly recommend.

Stephanie Teachout

IVS is great! The 24 service without emergency cost lets me take my pets in without waiting until the next morning, or after the weekend. We have gone multiple times with different pets and they are always great! And rhe financing they except is extremely helpful,

Nick Lucs

Very very kind staff. It's one of those things where I hope I don't have to come back again, but if we do have an emergency again I will come back here without a doubt. I will gladly pass on the name of this place to my friends and family that also have pets. Thank you for all that you do!

Mama Mia

I wouldn’t have asked for better service when my bulldog was very sick. The staff took care of her like she was their own pet.

Alexandria Sharp

Staff was so friendly and kind. My dog was sick and was being very withdrawn, the vet tech got on his hands and knees to make her feel more comfortable. They are very transparent about pricing. When I called they told me the exam fee and they reviewed charges with me BEFORE they did anything. Definitely recommend!

Elaine Greiner

Excellent service from veterinarians and *most* receptionists. I walked in with my cat in cardiac arrest, with something clearly wrong with my cat. The only receptionist at the time didn’t even bother to ask if my cat was in need of prompt care while she continued to take payment from another customer. At my turn, she demands that my cat looks “stable,” but I agree to disagree and basically force her to look at my cat. 2 hours later, I find out from one of the most kind and caring vets that my cat is dying and that had we not come sooner, things would have gone south soon. I put my cat down that same very night. To the caring vets that were kind and caring: thank you! You made me feel so much better. To the receptionist that almost turned me away: shame on you. My cat wasn’t stable, I know my cat, and maybe brush up on your knowledge about cats in distress.

Amy Stone

We needed them at 4am, they we kind on the phone and in person, calming and genuinely concerned. Got our pup right in and examined. Thank you Dr. Larson and staff for being there in the early morning hours to assist.

Chelsea Richards

The staff was all wonderful (true pet people) and while my dog typically gets nervous in a vet setting, she was upbeat and tail wagging the entire time - despite being in great amounts of pain. They were transparent in costs, options, and were so thorough - they gave my dog a full exam and talked with me about things such as her sight, which we weren't even there for. I have never had anyone do that before, and appreciated it more than I could express. Thank you to your wonderful staff who genuinely care about their furry patients.

Bret Harbour

I had taken my cat peewee in for urgent care, she was received quickly and with compassion. She was attended to by several Veterinarians, Dr. Leah Braas and Technician Zach Wright, both of whom were attentive, professional and kept me updated throughout her examination. The reception staff was just as responsive and considerate. All avenues of treatment and costs were discussed and clearly stated. As a result of my experience, two additional pets will become patients at IVS. Knowing the treatment they will receive makes the possibility of any unfavorable diagnosis less of a gut-punch.

Aaron Fuller

I took my dog there at 5am on a weekday. My dog was already gone and I knew it, I just did not want to admit it to myself. They took my dog quickly from me and then went back to work on him. Several minutes later they came out and told me that they were sorry and that he was gone. I cried like a baby and the two nurses treated me with respect and compassion. I could not have asked for better care for myself or for my dog. They were absolutely great! No doubt in my mind if they could have helped my dog, they would have done everything humanly possible.

We sadly had to unexpectedly say goodbye to our family dog of 14 years over the Memorial Weekend. It was a hard time in our lives, but the staff there were like family to us. They gave us time to mourn our loss and were very understanding. While we don't use them for our primary vet, they made our family dog and our family comfortable. Thank You!

Joe Fraioli

A staff of great people who truly love animals and have compassion an empathy for people. A vet who crawls on the floor to greet my pup is good people in my book. Many thanks for all that you do!

Howling Hound Acres

I have brought my animals here for 10+ years and so have my family members with their pets. The Doctors are exceptional and the staff is amazing. It may be more expensive, but I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for.

Donnita Weis

Brought my dog in for a swollen lymph node and they did blood work so over 400.00 later still don't know what's wrong other than an infection. Take my dog to her vet and it's an obsessed tooth. I asked if it could be an obsessed tooth and they said not likely. Will not go back.

I was very upset with the lack of compassion first of all. Secondly a "visual" diagnosis of our dog came after a 5 minute conclusion she was better to be put down. IF I had the ability to do it all over again I would have run from this place. I do not normally review many things. But I felt compelled. I wish I had time to give all the details of everything that should have been handled differently but I'll just say, if you have an emergency and they tell you your pet should be put down, I would seek a second opinion. I'm sure they help many animals every day but I'm certain I would drive 1000 miles out of my way next time.

Dr. Kevin Pottorff is in my standards the rudest human being I've ever met in my entire life. With my dog having multiple seizures within a hour we rushed him to this vet because it was the only one open in our area. Upon our arrival Dr. Pottorff was stating how we should raise our next dog and keep him in a kennel after telling him our dog doesnt like to be in a kennel and he might get upset like every other dog does when there owners tend to leave them. When in the office I agreed that the only way I would want them to inject my dogs medicine in him is if he had another seizure (which he did not the overnight stay). When we left I paid 300 dollars for my dogs stay and test/pill medicine. The next day I come back to pick my dog up they said I had a charge for 65 dollars, so I paid it so I could get my dog out off that hellhole. Come to find out that charge was for injecting my dog with medicine to calm him down when in fact we agreed that medicine was just for sezuires if he had one in the overnight, and in the information they gave me it doesnt state whatsoever that they use that medicine to calm dogs down just for neurological reason. And the vet didnt inform us that they were going to do this at all after calling to check up on my dogs mulitple time. As of now I'm speaking with attorneys in Chicago, Iowa City, and Des Moines areas to figure some kind of established reason of why this was done and why I wasnt informed about there actions to my dog until trying to charge me without telling me what it was for. More than likely from the sounds of this its going to be a lawsuit, took the day off work to find matches in attorneys working these kinds of problems. HIGHLY HIGHLY DONT RECOMMAND THIS VET HOSPITAL AT ALL!

Stan Marsh

All they wanted to do was talk money for different treatments while my pet was dieing. After asking for thousands of dollars 6 hours later, they actually started medical help and nothing they did even mattered. Pet died 15 minutes later and they asked for payment after. They didn't even care for my pet until they had the time and a PRICE was established for what MAY BE NEEDED to be done.

When your beloved pet is ill you don’t take time to read reviews, I wish I would have. However I had no reason to distrust, I had been to IVS 6 years earlier where my dog had surgery on her back legs, $4500 worth. I do not regret that, it saved her quality of life. That vet is no longer there and things have changed drastically. My dog who is otherwise and up to Saturday night healthy, had a normal stool and then diarrhea several times. She then began to vomit. I went to IVS and told them I saw her eating something in the common area where I live the night before. Dr Pottoroff came in, did a brief examination and I explained the same to him. He left and came back with a $500 estimate to do blood work and x-rays. I suggested we start with the blood work. Then I waited for a very long time until Dr Pottoroff came out. He then went over the blood work with me. White blood count was normal, as was all else. Liver count was up slightly. He said they wanted to do SQ fluids due to dehydration so I pointed to the sheet he brought out that the norm was between 31 and 61 and my dog was at 58. He said well it’s a high normal. I said no to the fluids. Then Dr Pottoroff (aka Dr Death) came back out with another estimate for $1800. He wanted to keep her overnight and do x-rays and check for liver cancer, tumors and Leptospirosis. Really?? I said she was vaccinated for Leptospirosis. Look up info on that! I pointed out again that I believed she just ate something. Again I said no, I would just take any medication and if she was not better I would call my vet Monday morning. He was visibly annoyed with me but quickly recovered and pointed to the paper and said check there by refused. Refused? Could we just say accept or not accept? A tactic I think. I then waited for a very, very long time and a tech came out with $150 worth of medication, two very expensive antibiotics. They suggested I don’t touch my dog without gloves for four days, really? The visit cost me $500. I left feeling like I just left a used car lot and very frustrated. The next day my dog seemed much better but I gave her the antibiotics which she promptly threw up. I went and bought her rice and chicken breast and made her a bland diet. She improved greatly during the course of the day, no more vomiting. By Monday morning she was of course fine. I did not give her any more of the pills. So I now have a cache of expensive antibiotics (which I am wondering why we needed since her white blood count was normal) and a new hatred for IVS and Dr Death. He took advantage of the fact that I was worried about my dog and tried to charge me outrageous fees for treatment she didn’t need. Shame on you!!! Bottom line…I would not recommend anyone take their pet there. You do have a couple of other choices. I understand emergency places are more expensive due to afterhours care, I was prepared for that, but they should not try to push unneeded tests like checking for cancer and tumors on a dog whose owner tells you they ate something, or expensive unnecessary medications for something she was previously vaccinated for. Start with what they were brought in for! DON’T GO TO IVS! My review would have been much longer but there is a character limit. I imagine they don't like the lengthy bad reviews they are getting. Listen to the reviews about this place, they are spot on. I have no gripes with the receptionists and techs, they have no control over these things, just Dr Death and IVS's practices. My response to Seth, I find it odd you can't discuss the blood work since I paid for it???? Then who do you discuss it with??

Awful experience. Over priced, rude, and all around a terrible business. I wouldn't send a dead rat there, though it would be fitting because the practice is full of them.

Took my sick cat to er and all they did was give some medicine. After 2 days he passed away. All this place does is trying to rack up your bill

Janice Schnathorst

Excellent care for my sick dog. Very thorough and explained everything to me.

Katie Bleil

I have had to go here multiple times over the last 14 years with my dogs. They are always very nice and thorough. They always spell out how much something is going to cost prior to preforming anything. The place is expensive, but what do you expect from an emergency vet. Its like any other emergency situation. You pay a premium. At least here, I know my dogs are getting great care! Everytime I call to check on my dog, they are friendly and they don't seem bothered at all that I am interupting their day. I really do love this place.

ron swanson

Its a place to go after hours. The staff seemed caring and I do appreciate that. Wasnt impressed with the doctor but he gave me what I needed to get my dog back to health. The price seemed quite a bit high but a nurse from my regular vet told me thats normal. It seems as if the doctor has a routine and gets to the bill, but I imagine after 5 he knows theres not a whole lot more of options. Like I said its a place to go.

Jordan Mulholland

The people here were nice enough but when your dog is really sick and they need to be taken care of and they come back with a bill that's is almost 500 dollars just for blood Work to be seen and for an x Ray and for the visit that is ridiculous I had to decline the x Ray because it was outrageous after everything and finding out what he had they came back and said they wante dot keep my dog overnight and gave me an estimate of 1800 dollars for them to keep my dog over night. That is ridiculous I don't know how the expect someone to pay that I felt like all they wanted was money instead of the welfare of my dog. So I declined there services and took my dog to another vet and they did the same thing they said they were going to do kept him overnight gave him fluids and only charged me 521 dollars. Now I find it odd that they can charge that much money and I can go to another vet and get the same care for over half the price I will never be going back here and I would not recommend this place to anyone else

Brett Mote

Avoid this clinic! The doctors and staff are not helpful or concerned

Jessica Briggle

Best ER facility in central Iowa - hands down. We wouldn't think of going anywhere else.

Jennifer Taylor

The staff was very kind and helpful. They did not make me feel dumb for something that may be minor.

If I could rate my experience here as lower than one star, it would be done. ***THIS REVIEW IS WORTH THE READ*** My newly adopted rescue dog had been vomiting yesterday, was not eating, and was not having a bowel movement. Around 11PM, I took him to IVS, the only place I found in the DSM area that is open 24/7. The woman at the front desk was very polite, and I filled out one sheet of paperwork before we were taken back to a wait room. A very kind technician came back to check weight and vitals. We didn't wait long, and the vet, Kevin L. Pottorff, was in to see us. He was also kind, initially, and showed genuine concern for my dog. He examined my dog and told me that all he could decipher "clinically" was that my dog was dehydrated. I knew that already, and I put a wall up with him, because I knew immediately he was withholding information from me. I asked him several times what the potential illnesses could be, and he dodged my questions. He offered to get me a quote on a full workup for my dog before we proceeded. He brought back $500.00 worth of blood work and X-rays that he thought should be done. I explained that I cannot afford those tests tonight. He suggested payment plans through Wells Fargo, and kept pushing the money agenda. He also used a ruse to play off of my fear for my dog's health at midnight on a Friday, when no one else was open. I asked him up front: "Is my dog having a medical emergency?". He stumbled over himself and replied, "Uh, well, I mean there's definitely something wrong, I just have no idea what." The question I asked was a 'yes' or 'no' question, and I was (and I'm sure most pet owners in this situation would be) not in the mood to be yanked around by a smarmy, manipulative, money-making drone. I had totally blocked him off by now, because I knew he was not attempting to perform his job in my dog's best interest. I am a well-educated, hard-working college student, so that's to say I'm not an idiot. I asked him straight: "If I take my dog home to see my vet immediately in the morning, will he die?". Kevin L. Pottorff smirked and said, "I doubt it, but I think you're being facetious." Facetious means to purposefully use inappropriate humor to make light of a serious situation. I was appalled at the insult that he hurled at me. I immediately declined the services, and he had me sign a waiver. Remember the nice ladies who checked me in? Their attitudes certainly changed when I checked out and they saw I had declined services. If you have the money to drop, or your dog is having an immediate medical emergency that you'll have to pay for, go here: I'm not questioning their skills to aid animals. But if you don't have the money and your animal won't fall over dead before someone else can help, they don't have the time of day, even at midnight. I took my sweet boy to our vet this morning, and he confirmed that he is not dehydrated any longer, and that he is simply having some gastrointestinal upset. He said he understood my emergency and upset and didn't charge me for the visit. He also gave me a couple types of bland food to use for him. That is how you care for our furry companions.

Michael Hamilton

My experience at this vet clinic when I took my cat there this past weekend was just above and beyond excellent. They were friendly, courteous, prompt, and just everything you'd want in a vet hospital. The big thing was that they inspire trust...which is a big thing when you need to leave your pet somewhere overnight. Great experience and I highly recommend them for everyone.

Helen Nymeyer

Courtney Albers

Very helpful. They took care of my cat quickly and with kindness and compassion.

Check the reviews before coming here. Came to this place because my puppy ate a small piece of one of her toys and was stuck in her throat. 45 minutes after check-in, I was still waiting on the room for the doctor.... Nobody came to even check on us. It's an emergency hospital!!!! I'm paying for the services not asking for free services, which I'd understand if have to wait. But 45 minutes and not even bother to check up on us? SHAME ON YOU! My puppy was chocking!!!! CHOCKING!!!! She ended up throwing up after! I took upon myself to help my puppy! I used one of those popsicle sticks in the room to make her throw up. I'll make sure this experience goes viral among my friends and social media. You guys suck! She could've died! I regret even making this place an option for my dog's well being. Other than that, this place it's outrageous, and not for the right reasons!!!!

Allison essink

One vet prescribed my dog a seizure medicine and it had stopped his seizures completely. When I call back in to get it filled since it had helped him, they told me they can’t prescribe my dog any medicine without him being seen. My dog has been out of the medicine since Friday and had a seizure this morning for the first time since he’d been prescribed. It’s extremely heartbreaking how hard it is to get medicine for an ongoing health issue such as seizures when he had already been seen at their clinic a month ago.

Molly Landolt

The people there were very nice. They treated my cat well. The prices though are outrageous even for an emergency hospital! Just to be seen it's $90 and I paid twice that for a wrap and antibacterial cream! If you can wait until the next day I really recommend waiting.

Susan Scott

They were very kind, helping me through a terrible time.

Bryan Johnson

I'm very happy with the care all the doctors and the technicians showed Coco. The front office staff as well, just perfect. Explained everything and was very honest with us on price and diagnosis. So far Coco is doing great. Thank you again to all!

Karin Hamilton

I initially contacted IVS after reading about their hospice and palliative care services. I'd been given a diagnosis of cancer at another provider and, was advised that if I didn't want to pursue surgery (which would not have removed all the cancer) then supportive care was the only option given. Dr. Braas was wonderful; she spent quite a long time with me discussing options for my boy. She also asked permission to share my boy's information with the oncologist on staff, Dr. Greene, advising Dr. Greene may have still other options. Needless to say almost a year later and we're still here! Dr. Greene and the rest of the IVS staff have been absolutely wonderful! It is a hard thing, dealing with a fur baby with a serious illness. Just like people, it's finding the right Drs that makes all the difference. Dr. Greene and all the IVS staff have been supportive and compassionate, making this situation all that much easier to deal with.

Stephen Conte

I’m giving 5 stars because the office staff went out of her way today to help me secure, two weeks after payment, a more cost-effective Care Credit payment option. Thank-you for that!! I understand the high prices, as this is an emergency clinic and is staffed 24/7. They have cutting-edge equipment too. So, like I said, I understand the cost. They provide quality care. However, it wasn’t Iowa Veterinary Specialty’s fault that the Low Cost Spay Clinic gave me a choice of only 3 referral locations, all high-priced 24-hour emergency care clinics, to save my emotional support animal’s life—when they could have referred me to a regular vet who is able to charge regular prices, and was open at that time and the following day as well. Finally, it’s good to know that they are here, because IF the crisis happened on a Saturday afternoon instead of noon on Friday, they really would have been my only option. They saved my cat’s life.

Jenna Borron

So glad that we took my puppy to them when we had an emergency. Everyone (from front desk, vet techs, and vets) was so kind and gentle and i know that she got top notch care. Thank you all so much!!

Carol T

Thank you for giving our precious cairn terrier a chance before we had to let her go. Dr Stephanie Larson explained what was going on in xrays and options to see if we could save her. it wasn’t meant to be after trying all we could.

Mary Crocker

My experience was excellent. I brought my dog in for an emergency while I was visiting home, expecting to be asked for a pre-authorization on my credit card, Instead, I filled out a bit of paperwork and in 5 minutes was in a room. The cost was half of what I thought it would be -- literally half -- even though we came on a weekend night. We were shown the costs upfront, so we knew what was coming. The front desk staff were friendly and the vet communicated clearly with us. I would highly recommend this to anyone who needs after hours care for their pet. Great people there!

Aileena Guzman

My bill started at 800, went up to 1120, after that they told me everything was fine with my puppy and that we’d be able to go home with medication for him and his lacerations, half an hour later they came in and told us he needed a major surgery and that it would cost 4,000+ and we most definitely do not have that kind of extra money. They told us he had a deep wound that opened his abdominal wall after they told us his wound was not deep and would be stitched up.. we asked to take him home and let him pass peacefully but they didn’t remcommend that because he would’ve been in too much pain so our only choice was to put him down, our bill is 1,400 dollars and we no longer have our loving puppy with us... DO NOT GO HERE. We could still have our baby with us today...

Candice Chasteen

Our baby had an acute, emergent episode of pancreatitis and the staff saved his life. He was immediately admitted, examined, tested, and subsequently hospitalized for aggressive treatment. I will fully entrust this practice with all possible future situations. Always talk to your vet about what your best friend can and cannot ingest!

I should've checked the Google reviews. I've been in my waiting room for TWO HOURS!

HORRIBLE !!!!!!!!!!! Do not go here. Brought my 14 week old puppy here afraid he might have bloat (which actually isn't possible because he is a french bulldog, but I didn't know that at the time) We saw Dr. Kevin Pottorff, and he was a TOTAL JERK. He told me that my dog had a grade 3 heart murmur and he was going to die, and "to just get a new dog".. the kicker is my pup had been checked by 3 different vets prior, all concluded he had no murmur. I brought him to my normal vet right away in the next morning and every vet in the practice listened to his heart, and guess what, still no murmur! A grade 3 murmur is incredibly severe and the fact that Dr. Potoroff diagnosed a grade 3 murmur and also told me I should "just get a new dog" was incredibly rude and stupid considered MY DOG DIDN'T HAVE A MURMUR. French bulldogs, because of their build, are noisy breathers, and vets who are not trained well can mistake the breathing for a murmur. ... I had to bring my dog their a second time because of a back issue and told them I did not want Dr. Potoroff. Unfortunately he was the only one working so I had to see him. He told me my dog had some sort of neurological problem and sent us up to Iowa State... guess what.. NO NEUROLOGICAL PROBLEM! French bulldogs along with all bulldogs have a different gait than other dogs, they often drag their middle two toes... the vet at ISU said the vet at IVS (Dr. Potoroff) must not have known this. All in all, DON'T GO THERE. Go anywhere else.

When I was worried about my golden retriever tonight and my vet was closed, I am so glad I went to IVS. From the moment we stepped in, the front desk staff were so kind and attentive and made me feel at ease. The vet tech was knowlageable, kind and reassuring and the veterinarian was smart, helpful and no-nonsense. They were wonderful from start to finish. Thanks for being so sweet to my Sadie!

Kathleen

My cat had problems on a Sunday and my regular vet was closed. Got right in and he was taken care of. Staff was so helpful and amazing. Highly recommend :)

Bethany Wilcoxon

My pup and I had to hurry in to IVS last Saturday afternoon. The entire team created a positive experience from start to finish. They communicated well, explaining the process and ensuring I understood the necessary follow-up. Highly recommended!

Absolutely increditable experience for us and our pet.!!!!!!

Cerrisa Snethen

Our dog, Hazel, had a night long seizure and became lethargic, unable to walk normally or stand for long periods of time, and was vomiting blood. We think she may have gotten into something poisonous on the farm. We brought her into IVS and they have been absolutely phenomenal! We can visit Hazel whenever we need to and call whenever we need an update on her health. She is completely back to normal now and it is all thanks to the wonderful vets and nurses here. They are compassionate and extraordinarily kind. One of the best vet experiences I have ever had. I would recommend this place to anyone!

Nancy Appel

Everyone was very compassionate and caring helping us through our crisis. I appreciated the hugs when they were most needed. The details were explained with patience and the rooms were very clean. It was a good place to be for a bad situation.

Samantha Lehman

I'm so happy I found this place. I was a mess when I stepped on my cats tail and they were calm, very helpful and understanding. I got in right away and everyone was so nice. Pricing is definitely reasonable for how well they work. I'm coming back here whenever I have a fur baby emergency.

Sean Bates

Was fine until my dogs second bandage change which was done incorrectly. When I brought my dog back 9 hours later because it fell off they charged me for it AGAIN!!! Also, my dog was having a dangerous reaction to a med and the "Doctor" said it wasn't from the meds. I looked the med up, Clavamox, on the web and difficulty breathing was #1 bad allergic reaction and to IMMEDIATELY stop giving it to her. To top it off They DID NOT do what they said they were going to do for her ear. It looks horrible!!!!! A piece of her ear is sticking straight out of the side of her head!!!!!! They don't listen to you. DO NOT TAKE YOUR ANIMAL HERE!!!! THEY WILL RIP YOU OFF!!!

Jean

If I could give zero stars I would. I've been through seven emergency situations over the last 10 years, so I'm well educated on this topic unfortunately. If you don't need "specialist", I highly recommend Creature Comforts Ankeny IA. They are very capable, have the equipment, can perform surgeries, and extremely reasonably priced for the excellent care you will get. They are open every day of the week with extended hours into the evening. If you need specialists, go to Iowa Veterinary Refferral. Do NOT go here. I'm going to refer to Principles of Veterinary Medical Ethics of the AVMA: A veterinarian shall be influenced only by the welfare of the patient, the needs of the client, the safety of the public, and the need to uphold the public trust vested in the veterinary profession; and shall avoid conflict of interest or the appearance thereof. *A veterinarian shall not allow any interests, especially financial interests, other than those mentioned above to influence the choice of treatment or animal care. Now for my review: My senior mother has a diagnosed mental health illness. She was temporarily living with me and decided one morning that my dog was very ill. She took the dog to this business and left with an over $500 bill. The 20 pound dog was presenting NO emergency symptoms (normal bowel movement that morning, no temperature, no distended stomach, no vomiting or abnormal temperature according to the doctor's report). The dog didn't eat that morning, and by the doctor's report stated owner had just switched the dog's food. This is a COMMON issue and is NOT considered an emergency or complex by any ethical veterinarian. WHY would any ethical veterinarian have treated this dog for an emergency situation obtaining blood work, x-ray, and testing feces etc.? The veterinarian should have told her there was NO medical emergency and sent her to her regular vet, as this was a weekday morning and the dog had not been seen by the regular vet yet. My mom was not demanding these tests, but is fearful and if told a test is needed by a "medical professional" will blindly follow a doctor's recommendation. Also, as stated in the doctor's report she was not the owner, I am and they should have called me for approval before proceeding past an initial visual exam. After all that surprise surprise, there is nothing wrong with the dog and she is sent home an hour later with anti nausea pills and instructions to switch her back to her other food. Oh, and an over $500 bill. Taking advantage of a mentally ill senior, not ethical by any standard. I have contacted the Iowa Board of Veterinary Medicine.

Katie Hoeksema

Very big thank you to IVS, especially Dr. Gearhart and Tina. You ladies are amazing! The genuine care and compassion you showed through the emergency treatment and loss of my cat is something I will never forget. You were very straight forward yet still caring and thoughtful. Thank you for all you do!

Susan West - Reeser

we have used this facility a couple times over the 14 years of our English Setter. I appreciate the breakdown of possible expenses that could be incurred should one decide to treat immediately on site, and the option to stabilize your pet until morning, so you can transport to your own vet and have them treated in a familiar setting. the staff has always been professional and passionate in the care given to our pet. keep up the good work

On Christmas Eve, we brought our pet, Bandit, to Iowa Veterinary Specialties for emergency care because he was suddenly unable to walk or see. At the time, he was being treated by a referring vet for ear infection. At Iowa Veterinary Specialties, Leah Braas prescribed several meds, assured us that Bandit’s condition was NORMAL for a cat with ear infection, and told us to follow up in two weeks. Bandit never moved again. We called back and told the receptionist that Bandit had been lifeless since our visit, unable to be stirred or even hold up his head. She directed us to bring him in to IVS again, and after a few minutes there, Karl Bolser told us we had two options: take him to ISU Small Animal Hospital or put him down. The vet tech (same one from earlier that day) pulled us aside and said the situation was dire. Just hours before, Iowa Veterinary Specialties assured us that the facts that Bandit couldn’t walk or see were of no serious concern and indicative of ear infection. This was completely, incredulously and categorically rejected by the critical care team at ISU. It’s bad enough that we had to spend our Christmas Eve at Iowa Veterinary Specialties, but the worst part is the complete assurance from Leah Braas that Bandit was fine, assurance that we passed along to our children. But Bandit was indeed far from fine, as those were the last moments he had on earth.

Cat Rocketship

When my cat became suddenly ill we made a visit to IVS. The staff is incredibly patient, helpful, and compassionate. The facility is immaculate and comfortable. They encouraged me to ask questions, to call for information as much as I'd like, and even to visit my cat during her stay. The cost was about what I expected -- or less -- but each time we discussed a procedure or a test I was presented with a revised estimated bill without even asking. We have seen Drs. Gerhardt, Menkin, and Olson. All good about providing updates, answering questions, and helping me decide how to provide the best care for Nelly. Our cat is a good friend, and she deserves good care from the people at IVS.

GO HERE! I can not praise the faculty enough. we came in for emergency GDV surgery and they were prompt and professional. all of the veterinarians that we ( or at least our dog) had were VERY good, they called us with updates every step of the way. I can not say enough about the vet techs, they were amazing, and answered ALL of my questions ( of which I had many). Equally they are the only vet hospital in Des Moines that is AAHA certified ( meaning they adhere to a higher sterile and quality standard) Please consider going here, if not because of this review, for your dogs sake. THANK YOU IOWA Veterinary Specialties from us and Stella!

Brought my dog in for unknown pain. Was seen and all staff were very kind. Decided not to do further test and was not pusshed to do anything

Bethany Biggerstaff

I commend the staff that has to go through the trauma they see so often and still treats each patient/client with such compassion. Couldn't do what they do but admire them full heartily.

Jim Hurt

All the Staff quite pleasant. Dr. Greene one of the best. She has excellent credentials & takes the time to explain procedures; expectations; results.

Hannah Schmidt

I brought my german shepherd here at 3am on a Monday morning. The staff was extremely understanding of how worried I was and treated my dog, who is very timid and shy, with extreme kindness. I disagree with the previous comments of cost, because you pay for what you get. This business must pay for veterinarians to be there 24/7 and provide your pet with medical services at the same time. I really appreciated the staff and would recommend any of my friends to this clinic in an emergency situation.

Money money money Everyone is right . They are ravenous for money . They are evil. Don't take your pet here . they will kill it for money ( talk you into putting it down if you don't go for there planned $$$ expense. ) The vet wanted 3600 dollars initially from me on a dog which probably died before I left signing papers . The dog was cold and I ask him why was the dog cold . vet didn't answer but I now know thinking on it .....that it lost too much blood in his stool. Body can't retain heat with no blood . the vet knew dog was a gonner but ask for 3600 then ask for 1700 and meantime all the time he wasted bargaining on money the dog was in the back not being treated for long time as he presented his get rich schemes for me to choose from. At last he settled for 800 with 500 down. I should have looked at my dog before leaving but vet had him in the back not being treated until he got his money . I called hour later , a woman answers told me dog had fluid come out of his mouth when she moved his limo body . then the be corrected her telling me dog was dead . They are criminal . Do not DO not give money to this devil who bargains with your animals life or dead body in my case . I want to sue him.

Helen Wares

I can not come close to expressing how much we are grateful for Shawna and staff.........PLEASE take your fur babies here if the need any specialized medical attention.

Laurie Gooder

Terrible service. Take advantage of the love you have for your pet. Learned more about the sickness of my pet from Dr Pol. Wait for your own Vet if possible.

Twila Salsbury

The doctor and entire staff were very caring and compassionate when our elder male cat was terminally ill. Our cat normally was very scared of others and howled around them. Not the case with these people. The doctor assisted our beloved pet to cross the rainbow bridge pain free and peaceful. We will always be thankful to him. And then , just today, 2 weeks after our cat’s passing, the doctor and staff send a lovely sympathy card. Thank you to doctor and entire staff.

Brittnie Willett

Our dog was diagnosed with an upper respiratory virus by our primary vet and was referred to Iowa Veterinary Specialties for over night observation. When we arrived with a very ill dog, the staff was very unhelpful. They wouldn't open doors, wouldn't help carry the dog, couldn't find their notes on him coming in, they acted like they didn't want us there and they didn't want to care for our animal. They repeated tests and xrays our vet already did without our permission and charged us. During his overnight stay for observation and IV (fluids), we received a call from the vet working asking if she could preform all these extra tests costing over $1000 because she thought he had cancer. She couldn't really answer any follow up questions to why we should do that, what cancer she thought he had, or what our treatment options would be. They just wanted us to spend more money. When I said "no we'll take him to our primary vet in the morning", she got mad and told me I should put my dog down! He was just there for observation!!! It was so frustrating hearing that I should put my dog down over the phone when I thought we already had a diagnosis and treatment plan!! When we picked him up the next day, the staff was very rude and almost abusive to my dog. They dropped him (couldn't set him down gently) and were pulling him by his neck. They made snide remarks about us not being able to take care of him and needing to put him down. PLEASE GO TO IOWA STATE OR MERLE HAY FOR EMERGENCY SERVICES! After being home, our dog is feeling better and healing. There was no need to put him down.

Chloe Barak

My dog had to come in for some scary symptoms and to have more tests done. My appointment had gotten missed in the computer somehow, but they still got me in to see the same doctor right away. Dr. Greene was great at explaining all the options and possibilities so we could make an informed decision. I had concerns after hours with how my dog was handling sedation and call to ask some questions. The tech that I talked to was fantastic. She took the time to explain what could be wrong and helped me decide if I needed to come back in or not. She also told me to call back and ask for her if I had any additional questions.

Denise Gustaveson

Amanda, Kristy and Dr. P were caring and so professional. Calmed the upset mom and took care of Louie like he was their own dog! If you need care in the middle of the night this is the place. Clean and smells good as well.

Nicholle Walter

The clinic has good service but the prices are absolutely rediculious. We brought our dog in because she wasn't feeling well and walked out with a bill of over $1800. All she had was a tummy ache. There were items on the final bill that were not on the estimate. Tis clinic doesn't seem to care about your pet as much as profiting. I will not be going back!

Extreme Stuff

This place is a scam. Way over priced I would not take my nothing to them no matter what the circumstances are.

Mark McRoberts

Performed caring and compassionate end of life care for the family pet.Could not have asked for better service

Tom K

I do not mind paying for service that needs to be done to help a pet I do mind being excessively billed for taking my pet back because of a reaction to the meds given and being told that they have no control what another Vet in there service gives out That they have to charge for another visit and examination and emergency visit charge Then not 12 hours later the very same Vet who we just paid the night before says that they were wondering if the meds they gave might cause a different reaction that would require another charge for a visit and examination The only thing I know is that They are associated with Iowa State Vet service but not controlled by them but a different group who seem to only be concerned with how much they can get from a pet loving family To end I will say I took a pet there to be put to sleep and they did get that right the very first time

Bailey Charles

When I first walked in this place I felt I was in good hands. The ladies at the front were courteous and very helpful. After going to the back though I realized that the doctor was not as nice and friendly as the front desk staff. He walked in and my dog put her paw on him to jump and he said "get her off me, take her over there for a min" which completely took me off guard considering he works with animals for a living. Then after I placed my dog on the table and he took a look, she jumped down and he once again made a rude remark about my allowing her to jump off the table. When she did it so quick I was unable to stop her. If it was not for an urgent care situation I would have walked out. Now everyone I know, along with the organization I help foster for, and all the pet lovers I can connect with I would tell them NEVER go to this place. Drive another minute to get your pet help else where.

william flanagan

Well what a un pleasant visit the vet tech was rude they took my 7 month old dog who has never been around a stranger as I watched the lady drag my dog choking her down the hall way then I sat and waited about 15 minutes later and I saw her asked where my dog is and she told me that the vet was checking now well that was a lie the vet came in 20 minutes after and said he was checking her now then he came in and told me he had to put a muzz ell on my dog which I never said they could what a crappy visit my dog wouldn't even look at me when we were done

May Thompson

Thank you to all the staffs and the doctor very much for being so patient with us and how caring you all were when we had to make the hardest decision of our lives. Thank you!

Jackie Swim

The staff has always been friendly and quick at getting my dogs in to be examined.

OBNOXIOUS ABOUT MONEY AND CLEARLY BUYING GOOGLE REVIEWS! READ THIS AND BEWARE!!!! My boyfriend and I took our cat here on the weekend as he had been vomiting and losing weight. When we arrived, we were first introduced to Dr. Bolser and he told us we needed to run a bunch of blood tests, x rays and put him on IV nutrition. We signed a fairly lofty estimate and were immediately shaken down for the first of many "deposits". Throughout the course of the weekend, we spoke to three other doctors-each of which informed us that we needed more testing and they needed more money-which we paid. On Monday, he was transferred to Dr. Olson who told us that he needed to do an ultrasound and they needed more money. I should have figured it out by then, but we felt as though we were at their mercy and they did the ultrasound. He then called us and explained that the results were unclear and they needed to put a camera in his stomach to see what the problem was. They just needed another $1800 from us. Our vet was open by now, so we called them and thank goodness they suggested that we go get our cat and take him to see them. We took him there, they look at him for about three minutes, figure it out immediately, put him on pills that cost 7 dollars and here we are several months later and he is perfect again. My gripe is that every time he breathed, someone called us and shook another 600 dollars out of us making us feel like if we didn't pony up, he would die. Fortunately, my neighbor works for our vet and explained to us that Iowa State bought that clinic several years ago and runs it as a "non-profit". Sounds great, but she showed me a copy of the IRS form that they have to release to the public. It explained why our cat's medical bill was nearly $2500 there with no answers, and was $73 dollars at our normal hospital complete with cure. I don't know what my veterinarian makes but I am sure it is less than the $176,000 that Dr. Olson made last year, or the $114,000 that Dr. Bolser made. "Non-profit" indeed!!! Explains why we were frisked down over the phone every six hours, someone has to cover their exorbitant salaries . Now the Google reviews. I'm no technophile, but I looked at their reviews, and there are certainly others that echo our gouging experience, but there were some that offered great reviews which surprised me, so I looked into them. All of them offer 5 stars and vanilla "they informed me and treated me great" experiences. All five of these people have very common names and their profiles list them as living in Iowa. But when I looked at their reviews, my skin crawled. They all have overlapping reviews of four businesses scattered on all sides of the state and say nothing committal--just the five stars and "blah, blah, blah". Obviously trolls that are purchased to boost ratings!!! Here are my examples: "Miriam Day" Reviews of Quad City Orthodontics in Bettendorf and Iowa Veterinary Specialties "Wayne Smith" Reviews of Quad City Orthodontics in Bettendorf and Iowa Veterinary Specialties "Lisa Russell" Haines Insurance in Mason City R. Menden Accounting and Tax Service in Shakopee, Minnesota and Iowa Veterinary Specialties "Terry Jones" Reviews of Quad City Orthodontics in Bettendorf Haines Insurance in Mason City and Iowa Veterinary Specialties "Jay Harmon" So far just Iowa Veterinary Specialties but I just have this sneaking suspicion that he is soon to require braces in Bettendorf So from my perspective there are two potential explanations for this--either Miriam Day, Wayne Smith, Lisa Russell, Terry Jones and Jay Harmon share one car and each have terrible teeth, sick dogs and only buy insurance in Mason City or it is just possible that Iowa Veterinary Specialties bought fake Google reviews like a used car dealer would to lure people in and cover up their bad reviews from real customers. I'm not sure which explanation is more plausible..... I would expect this from a car dealer--but not Iowa State University. Shame on you ISU and glad that I'm a UNI grad!

Mike Davis

Does not actually care about the animals only money. Told me it would be $1000 dollars to treat my cat. Went to Banfield instead and it only cost $200 and they didn't need to do any of the things I.V.S. said HAD to be done. On top of that I really enjoyed when I caught a receptionist eavesdropping when I opened the door. The look on her face was priceless.

Kristi Tarr

They took care of my Cavalier's ruptured anal glands. :( They seemed compassionate and cared that she not only needed antibiotics but was also in pain and definitely made her feel better. If other places offering emergency care in DM are 'cheaper,' there's probably a reason for that.

Arriel Alexander

We went in on Wednesday night because our dog came inside with a bloody leg. We thought everything was fine after we cleaned it and bandaged it but about an hour later it started gushing blood. It was barely after the time our vet closed so we went in to IVS. They stapled it closed and bandaged her up. She’s on the mend now and back to her happy self. It was a really stressful situation for us but they were so good in there.

Kala Thury

Drove over 2 hours to get here because, we didn't have anyone who could help us at home that late at night. This staff was super helpful and considerate of us, and took great care of our cat.

Rich Paly

I do not recommend this Vet Hospital for anything i dont believe that they do their jobs as should be i believe they are out just make money no matter the situation!!!!!! I have lost a pet recently through their so called care nothing was done to help my family member.....Think 10 times before coming to this.place you may not walk out with your LOVED ONE AT ALL.........ALSO READ THE OTHER REVIEWS ITS PROOF!!!!!

debbiewade1

Again, I have contacted a couple more VET's and they ALL agree that the less invasive method is absolutely the best way to go especially with a PUPPY. The less aggressive and the LEAST expensive should be the first method of choice, not to run a million unwarranted tests and duplicate tests at that and torment the puppy to all lengths. Dehydration will and can reflect itself in higher Liver TESTS and FIRST and FOREMOST hydration should be the FIRST choice of treatment and the animal be sent home. Hydration can be administered under the skin so it can distribute itself through the body as MANY many VETS will attest to. To charge a person for double tests about $200.00 worth is absolutely highway robbery and was so VERY unnesessary. I have employed a lawyer and if anyone reading this would like to go with this please contact me. The lawyer is ready to accept all complaints. I already have 4 people that have had issues with this PLACE! They are all So very unhappy and I had a very upset unhappy puppy for quite a while with a bladder that had to be retrained because of conflicting reasons why they even put in a catheter. You would think they would at least be in agreement. Again contact me my lawyer is anxious to move on this. Thanks to all reading this! I also agree with all who agree that they are ONLY concerned with money and how much they can make. I had another friend who was told their puppy was going to die and to just get a new one. They took it to a VET on Beaver and was told that this was COMPLETELY false and the dog would just be fine. Every time I see the young lady and I ask about her puppy she said that he is doing so great. They too hated the place and were saddened to be told their dog was going to die. How rude. I too agree with the google reviews, I believe they entered those to build their business only!!! How sad they are!

Romm

Even if you want to pay extra after-hours to try to get your pup updated for rabies or DHLP-P before going out of town, they will not help you out on this. Be aware.

Shanelle Houghton

Very very very terrible. They refused to help my sister in laws cat after she had kittens and pushed out her uterus. They were gonna put her down and send the kittens back home with my sister in law without letting her know how she's gonna feed them. Will never take any of my other animals there again!!!!!

John Comer

Just a note of appreciation for the expert care and advice for Mira, our 8 year old golden retriever. Since we found lumps in her throat last December, we have been very pleased dealing with Dr. Greene and her staff of very sympathetic, caring, well-trained professionals. Even though there is no cure for lymphomia, it is comforting to know, with the treatments, we will have that bit of extra time with Mira. Every treatment is followed by a standard "Please call us if there are any changes or questions". They not only say it, the mean it! Thanks again.

Iam Cool

If I could give 0 stars I would. My fiancé and I took our dog in last night because she was pooping pure blood and having uncontrollable accidents. We got there around 11:00pm and it took 30 minutes to see the actual vet even though we were the only people there. My dog needed tests run on her and from where my fiancé and I were waiting we could hear her whining and barking. We could also hear a nasty nurse yelling at our dog to “shut up” and calling her a “big baby” so I peeked in the back where my dog was so I could see this nurse and as I was watching she was leading my dog to a kennel where she then threw my dogs leash at her. I wanted to roundhouse kick her in the face I was so furious. When the main vet was going over our dogs X-rays and blood tests I just wanted to get her out. I even told him I did not want to keep her overnight in that place because I did not like how that nurse talked to my dog. He seemed unconcerned and didn’t care and then proceeded to go over pricing with us and wanted to run more tests which we thought she did not need and as it turns out she did not need them at all. We brought her to her primary vet the next day and they didn’t even mention those ridiculous tests. This place is outrageously expensive. If you love your animal like I do DO NOT bring them here. They love one thing and that’s money. They don’t care about comforting your animal and they don’t give realistic diagnostics.

Jenna McFarland

Very caring staff and understand the love a pet owner has for their fur baby. They walked me through everything that had to be done to my pup when I had to take her here! Really great waiting room as well! Not overpriced for the care your fur baby gets. They also checked in a few days later to make sure she was doing ok!
