I absolutely love this place. Not only does it have character from the little "monster" that roams the building, but it has an expertise that you can't get anywhere else. I tried other veterinary places such as summerset and it took them 4 tries to get a sample from my cat's bladder without success, but this place only took one try to get it successfully. The doctors are very knowledgable about how to treat animals respectfully and medically. I would highly recommend.

From the moment I walked in the door, I new this vet was for me. And since I've been a patient, I know from experience what a professional and committed practice this is. Everything is spotless and clean, the front staff are always cheerful, excited to help and efficient. When we arrive, I've never had to wait for my appointment, they swiftly take us to the weigh station and then in to the exam room. From start to diagnosis to personal follow-up, they are 5-star Professionals. My kitty's doctor is phenomenal! After years of taking her to the University with no diagnosis for her ear and bladder problems, Dr. Elliott zeroed in on the problem right away and gave is an action plan! She is sharp - no one had ever thought to look at allergies before. Brilliant! And they always follow-up with a phone call, or two, to see how Cleo is doing and see if I have any questions. They are the Best !!

I have gone to this vet for years and they have always treated me and my pet very well. The facility is clean, efficient and the staff and Doctors are very friendly and understanding. When I had to have a pet put down a few years ago they were very sensitive and kind. It is never easy to lose a pet but sometimes you have to do what is best for the pet and relieve its suffering. Dr. Stohlmeyer was very kind during a difficult situation. Our current pet had an acute problem back in December and even though there were no appointments available that day they squeezed our pet in and treated her. I can't recommend Ames Pet Hospital highly enough. They are the best.

I wish there was a 'Poor' option in the quality of this vet clinic. There is nothing at the level of 'Fair' at Ames Pet Hospital. We have had 2 emergencies with our dog. Both emergencies, we were 95% confident that there was a GI blockage due to ingesting non-digestible objects. I will skip to the second time we called, after-hours, for a major emergency AND THEY NEVER CALLED US BACK TO SEE TO OUR EMERGENCY (they have a pager system where you leave your number and then they call you). We called twice and never received a call back. We called another Ames vet and he came into the office after hours to do life-saving surgery that same day. We will no longer take our pets to the Ames Pet Hospital and will advise others to stay clear. Here's more information as to why you should not take your pets here. The first emergency, we contacted them during business hours and were told they were too busy giving kittens shots to deal with us and told us to go the ISU Vet center if we could even get in to see someone there. When we tried to tell them we knew there was probably a blockage and just needed x-rays to confirm and instead they insisted we do a series of blood and stool tests to make sure he wasn't just sick. They wasted precious hours and treated us like we were morons. Every time we went in for routine check ups, we were hit up for extra services that were never needed and usually cosmetic though the advice is presented as a health related and necessary treatment. They must make a lot of money preying on ignorant but very loving pet owners.

Dr. Stohlmeyer has been our vet for 8 years and we have consistently received excellent care from her and the Ames Pet Hospital staff. Our younger dog was born with a serious ongoing medical condition and Dr. Stohlmeyer has been terrific in talking through our treatment options and working to find ways to keep him healthy.

Couldn't make time to see a sick puppy. During normal business hours was told to go to ISU vet for diarrhea and vomiting. That's why I stopped going here. If I could give a zero I would.

I don't know what other people are talking about... I also have pet rats, and when I took them in the vet was knowledgable and friendly. When I got there, I just had to fill out minor paperwork before the exam on my two girls. The vet, I believe Dr. Hansen, checked everything out gently and professionally. She was also incredibly friendly. My girls, who are pretty skittish around new people, didn't even really seem to mind the poking too much. Olivia showed some congestion in her sinuses so as a precaution she went on antibiotics, and they even gave me some extra in case Opal began to have issues. The instructions on how to use the meds were clear. I will definitely bring my babies back here. :)

We have a rescue dog who is very nervous and unsure of strangers. The vet, Dr. Margaret, who we met the day of our appointment was AMAZING! From the moment she walked into the room, she had this calm demeanor that invited our dog to be friendly and accept her touches, etc. She spent extra time answering health and behavioral questions unique to a rescue. She was amazing and Ames Pet Hospital - specifically Dr. Margaret - has a patient for life! Thank you for making our vet visits less scary. :)

Going to Ames Pet Hospital for the first time was a pleasure. My cats took well to Dr. Elliott and she was a very positive while relaying all the important information to me. Monster, the clinic cat, is aloof but perfectly charming. The rest of the staff are helpful. I returned shortly after the first visit for a dental cleaning for both cats, and the estimate they gave beforehand gave a reasonable idea of what I ended up paying. I have no complaints and plan to return for any of my pets' needs.

Don't get me wrong, taking care of my dog is always more expensive than I assume, but I'm learning that that's part of being a responsible pet owner. I also want to point out that despite some of my own communication errors on my end, Ames Pet Hospital took good care of my dog and was always friendly and forward. I highly recommend them.

I recently took my cat in for some bladder issues. After a bladder analysis it came back as a UTI and he was given medication that same day. Dr. Elliot was wonderful with my little kitty and explained all of his treatment options thoroughly before giving me the options of how I wanted to proceed. The price was a little steep, but I wouldn't put a price-tag on my pets health.

I love Ames Pet Hospital! I starting bringing my, now 1 year old, great dane there when she was just a puppy. They were all so great!! We saw Dr. Hanson, who owns a Dane and is very knowledgeable about them, which was what I was looking for, as the breed has some health problems. We had also seen Dr. Mac on a couple of short made visits, who we also loved! We recently moved to MN and now have to find a new vet, which I think will be hard when I'm trying to find someone as great as Dr. Hanson!! Everyone at Ames Pet Hospital was amazing, very nice, very sweet, always got excited when I brought my pup in, even if it was just to buy her frontline and heartguard. They were also very good at squeezing me in on short notice if something was going on that I wanted to get her in. Nothing but good things to say about them :)

I brought my chihuahua for a check up and to get some booster shots after moving to the area. The vet was very friendly and knowledgeable. She was excellent with Henry (my chihuahua) who tends to hate everyone and after a few minutes he was completely chill with her and stopped barking (which he tends to do with all strangers) Dr Lisa K also made my daughter feel comfortable because she gets anxious when Henry gets his check up. She was so awesome it's to the point that my daughter keeps trying to give Henry checkups at home

I've taken both cats and dogs here to varying degrees of satisfaction. Dr. Hansen is great and will listen to all your concerns. As with many places, the friendliness of the staff varies from person to person. I would say most of the staff though is quite courteous and helpful. Boarding animals here can be another story. My indoor cats have contracted parasites from their stay here, whereas they otherwise have never contracted such things in their lives. However, the prices are reasonable and comparable to most vets in town. Despite the negatives, I would still recommend Ames Pet Hospital.

I’ve never written an online review before and likely never will again. Some things are just too horrible to go unnoticed, though. The Ames Pet Hospital is one of them. We brought our two cats in thinking one of them had a possible UTI/bladder infection (there were a few fresh urine spots outside of the litter box and neither had done that before). We took both to the Ames Pet Hospital hoping to get a quick urine sample on both, being sure that both cats’ bladders were full before we brought them in. One cat needed his rabies vaccination updated. Fair enough. Then they talked about his distemper and boosters, and really emphasized the importance of each until I agreed (even though I said again and again he was an inside cat and shouldn’t ever be exposed to these things). They never discussed the extra $70 it would cost. I mentioned the other cat had an ear mite issue that had persisted no matter what we did. The vet stuck a $25 Q-tip in his ear (again, I wasn’t informed on the price until the bill) and gave us the same stuff we already had for an additional $20. These were separate charges from the cats’ “Wellness Exams,” which were $38 each. Finally we got to the bladder issues. They got a sample from one cat (another $38, no discussion) but couldn’t “find” the other one’s bladder. The sample from the cat they did get, however, suggested a UTI infection ($44 for meds). Problem solved, right? No. They suggested I keep the other cat there overnight so they could get his bladder sample (another $38) as well. Again no costs were mentioned. Long story short, the next day we picked up the overnight cat and our bill. The bill was $286 and the cat was soaked in his own urine and hungry and thirsty beyond belief. The cat must have been lying in it for several hours, if not all night, because his entire coat reeks of it. Ironically, the very problem we brought the cats in for—urine issues, specifically the smell—is now magnified. The cat walks all over the house—as any cat does—but he leaves urine scent everywhere he goes. We’ve washed him as best we can but it persists. I just hope once we gets himself all cleaned off and my boyfriend and I somehow cut back enough to the pay the rent this month we can forget about this mess altogether—except for to never take our pets to the Ames Pet Hospital again.

Went here to get my cat looked at. He had been hospitalized before for a blockage and was told by the vet he was still partially blocked, and that we either had to hospitalize him, or put him down. Which to hospitalize an animal they seem to rarely do it, and the cost is around 1,500 to 2,500 which for someone who doesn't have that kind of money to use it left us with the option to have to put down our cat. I told her details of what ISU small pet hospital told me over the weekend and she really didnt seem to care or put any of that into the determination on my cars health. She based her diagnosis off of an xray that showed my cats bladder was full, and did not try to relieve it to see if my cat was even still actually obstructed. Took my cat to ISU a couple days later after calling them and describing how my cat was acting and all that had happened. My cat was not blocked, not even partial blocked and was actually improving. Only had a uti and is now fine and in 0 pain. It's sad that the vet I saw there didnt listen to any of what I had to say and was head strong that my car was dying without even doing any physical evaluations on him. I have had good experiences at this pet clinic, bit after that last visit, the credibility of this clinic went down for me. Go to ISU small animal hospital if you have something serious because they will send you there anyways. If you have small issues that a vet clinic can take care of this place is perfect. It is not really a pet hospital in any sense, any emergency they send you to ISU and generally will say it's so any animal there will not get infected which is great because of the safety for the other animals, but this is not a hospital. Also make sure you get one of the good vets there. I have taken my animals to this clinic for a couple years now and have been satisfied till this last vet visit. Only thing saving this from being a 1 star is my previous appointments there and because all the other vets we have seen there have checked everything out well and discussed more openly rather then not listening and being head strong and set without full proof.

Both animal and human healthcare is expensive and I just expect it to be part of having a dog.

My mom had taken her dog here when he had gotten hit by a car. They did all they could to help her with him. But Benji didn't make it. The staff treated my mom really good. They even made her a paw print keepsake out of clay for her and they sent her a card as well. My mom has not said anything bad about them.

I love the doctors and staff here. Doctor Elliot is so kind and caring. She cried with me when one of my babies passed away in my arms after we'd done all we could for him. All of the staff here have an obvious love for all animals, even the rats I bring in. They're also very reasonably priced and always try to get the best treatment while trying not to prescribe medications that are too expensive. Doctor Elliot always listens to opinions/suggestions I get from others and speaks with her colleagues to come to the best decisions for my pets. Now that I've moved to Marion, IA, I really miss this place - I feel like the advice I received here for my rats and dog were always in the best interest of the pet while also being realistic (and not just trying to get me to pay for unnecessary medications and procedures like other vets seem to do). Highly recommend this place!

I recently moved to the area and, after researching the veterinarians in the area, chose Ames Pet Hospital. I was thoroughly impressed! One of my dogs has dog reactivity and the other gets nervous at the vet, so going in with both of dogs for the first time felt intimidating. However, the staff was very accommodating and made the process stress free! We easily avoided the waiting area with the help of the office manager. Our vet, Dr. Lydia Spray, was was excellent, taking it slow and feeding them both a lot of peanut butter which helped relax my nervous dog. She also was knowledgeable about dog behavior, another plus! We will definitely be going back for many years to come. :)

I adopted a dog from the animal shelter in Ames and everyone I talked to recommended this vet. They were easy to work with and never had a problem getting my dog in if it was an emergency. They don't add on random charges but you have to ask for additional tests and sometimes they seem reluctant to look into other causes if they have their mind set. They were always friendly if I called with a question.
