My dog Flynn unfortunately fell from a second floor balcony onto concrete. He’s doing fantastic now but I can’t begin to express my gratitude and appreciation towards everyone that helped with Flynn from the receptionist to the nurses that I never met but I know took great care of him and especially the doctors. I was a hysterical mess and everyone handled the situation with the up most professionalism and compassion I could ever imagine having. Everyone kept me well informed and I know we’re doing everything they could to comfort Flynn while being there scared. Thank you all for everything.

Great. How wonderful is it that there is somewhere open at 8pm on a Sunday? It’s a vulnerable thing to need and ER visit with your pet. so read reviews with caution. I have seen some upset that they had to pay in advance before their animal would receive treatment. Our dog had been shot - they worked on him immediately. So they do not risk the welfare of your animal. Kind. Compassionate. Knowledgable.

Chihuahua broke her jaw at 5am went to PNC then Lafayette based on THEM saying they do payments. Mind you an hour and half drive with 3 crying kids. Get here wait 2 hours for 1200 to look at her, just for diagnostics. Ok cool 1/2 down.... then that say well a 100% to treat AND THEY DO NOT TAKE PAYMENTS (mind over the phone they said they did). Now any care where is any where is harder to afford after paying for gas, lunch and visit for them to say they do not. I based my decision to drive down on payments. So now my kids are holding their hurt dog in a car for another 2 hours to head back home for a vet. They should have added three little words.... "to be seen" half down to be seen.... My 13, 9, and 8 year old are now crying while their dog lays in pain based off horrible uncompassionate "care"

I had a very upsetting experience with Purdue just recently. Long story short, I have been taking my pet skunk in there over the last 2 & 1/2 months because of an injury. 3 visits total, approximately $980 later, and I have received no real help of any kind, and they have never delivered a definitive diagnosis of ANY kind. I have gotten 3 different contradicting "treatment" suggestions from 2 different doctors, and 2 contradicting treatment suggestions from ONE student Doctor.... ad they didn't even take an X-ray until the THIRD freaking visit! I was even given such different treatment suggestions and diet recommendations, that the two were actually opposite of each other.... making it LITERALLY impossible to do both! I had to take my skunk to Indianapolis to a REAL Veterinarian, and within ONE visit my it was revealed to me that the suspected diagnoses delivered by Purdue was not anywhere near accurate. In fact, it was so far off that had I listen to them and not seen the real Vet, my skunk would have likely been partially paralyzed and possibly even had died within a couple of months! My skunk was finally successfully diagnosed, and it was done in one visit, anf for less than half of what Purdue charged me to do absolutely NOTHING for me. They literally told me to "confine my skunk, he'll be ok in a couple of weeks".... that was their complete treatment. Then to add insult to injury, the old man Vet over there (Sandusky) has turned out to be a major freaking pervert and is trying to contact my girlfriend on Facebook! sent her a friend request just today! I am FLOORED at this facility, and I plan to call the school President's office on Monday!

Thousands of dollars later, we are nothing but a number that has been shuffled around with no continuity of care or concern. Main issues THUS far: 1) Dr. Slead falsely identified himself as a second year resident, when in fact the directory shows he is an intern who just graduated vet school earlier this year. 2) I was not able to check up on my pet while staying in the ICU overnight to find out if they had eaten. Apparently it is against policy for a client to ask if their animal has eaten dinner. If you want to know how your animal is doing overnight-Purdue is not the place to go to. 3) Kidney stone analysis results came back 5 days before I found out the results. This is COMPLETELY unacceptable practice. (We had consulting vets outside of Purdue waiting on these results in order to adjust their treatment plan.) No apology or ownership of the mistake was noted. 4) Test after test to rule out various diseases and NOT ONE PERSON mentioned a food allergy. Had it not been for me running everything past my primary vet I would still be causing my animal great sickness. Thanks Purdue for that one. Not one apology or ownership of the “oversight” was noted from Purdue when I mentioned the food allergy. 6) The senior clinician Dr. Kendall, did not inform me that she is covering for only one week while another senior clinician is on vacation. This information should have disclosed to the client for purposes of transparency. So much for continuity of care. (Although there has been zero continuity of care in the first place). All in all. Save your time. Spend your dollars and travel time for your loved one elsewhere.

My kitten had a very rare health condition and wouldn't be alive if it were not for the students, vets and vet techs at the small animal hospital on campus. They were all very compassionate and knowledgeable in the type of surgery and after care my kitten would need for his rare condition. He received above excellent attention and TLC for all his needs during and after surgery and came out of there a kitten with a new lease on life! These people are professional, caring, and very well trained in their field.I would highly recommend them to anyone who appreciates excellence in the care of their pets!

Long story short, I was talked into an EEG here and picked up my cat from Purdue around around noon on 5.22. About 5 hours after picking her up from her EEG, I had to race back to the ER because her eye was swollen shut. That's when I learned that an eye ulcer is a potential complication of EEGs, which was clearly a risk that was not explained to me beforehand. An emergency vet saw her maybe around 5:15-5:30, diagnosed her, and said that she would return in a few minutes to give my cat antibiotics for her eye... over two hours later, I'm still waiting and dangerously close to having my cat miss her 7 PM dose of phenobarbital. I eventually got out of there around 7:15-7:20, raced home, and was able to give my cat her phenobarbital before she started experiencing severe complications due to failure to adhere to the 12-hour dosing schedule. The emergency vet told me to return in 3-5 days for a recheck of her eye ulcer... six days later (the 5th day was Memorial Day), I bring my cat in on a scheduled appointment at Purdue. It took them *over two hours* to do a recheck of my cat's eye. This scheduled appointment took so long that my poor cat started crying and then urinated in their sink. I am still waiting on a satisfactory answer as to why my cat was put on phenobarbital without bloodwork to establish *PRIOR* to receiving phenobarbital* that she was an otherwise normal, healthy cat that could safely tolerate phenobarbital. One final note is that throughout my visits there, I recently received contradictory information from vets, residents, and specialists. Regarding her eye ulcer, one followup appointment in 3-5 days turned into two followup appointments over the course of two weeks, despite being told that progress on her eye ulcer looks "excellent." I was told by a resident that the team is going to meet to determine if my cat needs a CT scan of her lungs because there was no change in the degree of inflammation on my cat's lungs in an x-ray and then told by a specialist on the following day the complete opposite: a CT scan of her lungs isn’t even a consideration because the x-ray indicated that my cat’s lungs are perfectly clear. My experiences at Purdue have been so miserable that I am sending my cat to live with relatives on the east coast because I am not comfortable with Purdue being the only 24-hour ER option. If I am going to pay rates comparable to what Purdue charges, then at least my cat will have access to certified Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care facilities without having to go through the rigmarole of being bounced between residents and students. Which brings me to another point... I wonder how shorter appointments--scheduled and otherwise--to Purdue would be if their residents and students weren't learning from your pets. I understand that it's a teaching hospital, but this fact is hardly reflected in the rates they charge.

My rat terrier has Congestive heart failure. Their treatment of Vetmedin l thought was causing liver function problems. Two Cardiologists said they wanted to do more testing for the liver problem, but I suggested she stop her Vetmedin medication to see if that was the problem. One month later, her blood tests returned to normal. But 2 months later, the enzymes were high again. Eventually changed to different meds with better results. Last month it took five days, multiple calls to multiple Cardiologists to get a response. I have documentation for these facts. Despite these faults, Purdue has the only Cardiologists in central Indiana 24/7. My other dog has chronic bronchitis and is being treated well there by the Internal medicine doctors. Overall, I believe that they do quality work.

My dog needed two surgeries, supposedly two weeks apart. First surgery went OK (removed all knee support). Wanted me to wait five weeks for TPLO surgery while my dog was essentially left immobile from first surgery. After care is minimal. Felt like we fell in the cracks. Very impersonal. To be sure they are a good hospital, but their bedside manner needs a lot of polish. Human interaction and setting expectations lacking.

Killed our new born puppy, malpractice. I am extremely distraught over the loss of an infant puppy due to your negligence. I am at a loss for words, you took her from us. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

I am grieving deeply for our precious little Maltese, Ruby. So is her sister Bella. We took Ruby there New Year’s Day for possible seizure activity. They wouldn’t let us stay with her. They got a hx and 45 min later came and said she was fine and we could take her home. About 30 min later they ran and got me stating “there has been a drastic change in her condition. They didn’t know what happened, aspirated or what, but all of a sudden someone found her blue in the cage.” It is obvious to me no one was watching her. They did cpr but said she only had 10% chance to survive 24 hr even on a vent. We decided to have her put down as her ribs were broken during cpr. OUR THING WAS FOR HER NOT TO SUFFER. I have spoken to the admin and he was very kind. No one will stand up and take responsibility for not doing their job and not monitoring her as was on seizure watch....except they did not watch. Plus by not letting us stay with her, she was alone in their cage wondering where mom and dad were. Her sister Bella is suffering too....she has no idea why Ruby, her life long companion, was gone. The grief and the pain I feel is tearing me up. I don’t know how to deal with this loss. We are loving, hugging and kissing on Bella...but she is grieving also. I WILL NEVER TAKE ANOTHER PET TO THEM.... EVER. I forgot to say that their charting, time frame and info was all wrong. ?Makes me think someone trying to cover up some errors as they probably know the death was their fault????????? I would not even give them one star.

If I could give a 0 I would. My dog went in for a simple ultrasound of thyroid and came back BLIND. The night of the procedure he was walking and bumping into walls and furniture. I called at 2:00am to see what they had given him as the ER hospital in my town needed to know this to reverse any medication. Purdue didn't have ANY RECORDS as to what was given as they said the note wasn't finished. I begged someone to find out and no one could. Days later I get a call after talking with hospital administrator and found out they gave a second dose of drugs to my dog in the middle of the procedure which caused blood vessels in his eyes to rupture! HE IS NOW BLIND!!! Stay away from this butcher place and go to Ohio State Vet Hospital. Even it is further I beg everyone to stay away!! I will be setting up a blog to alert everyone of this place and their malpractice!

My dog Hans hurt his leg and we were referred to Purdue for treatment. He had to have multiple surgeries and continuous bandage changes for weeks. The staff, students, and doctors are all SO wonderful to work with. Not only are they knowledgeable in every aspect of veterinary medicine, but they are compassionate and understanding and answer any questions you have. I am so glad we took Hans here, as they saved his leg and he is healing very well now. Thank you for all you guys do ❤️

Visited here back in Oct 2014 with my 15 month old dutch shepherd that had a lump on his nose in between his eyes. Went to different vets around my area first and nobody had an idea on what was going on. Made an appointment to have a ct scan, ultrasound, blood work, and biopsy done when we went. Staff is very friendly and knowledgeable, and the veterinarians were genuinely concerned for the well being of my guy. Unfortunately the outcome of the test revealed he had a form of aggressive nasal cancer and it had already spread to certain parts of his body. Very sad situation but I know the doctors did all they could and would of done more had they been given a chance. I would defiantly go back if I had something wrong with my other guys that my local vets couldn't figure out.

I visited Purdue’s Small Animal Hospital, and I will never go back. By the end of my visit I was almost crying from just how rude the employees were. It took them more then 10 minutes to bring my dog back to me even after I canceled her procedure, which I found out they performed even though I canceled it.

Very upset with this place! My husband and I brought our 3 month old German Shepherd puppy here to get an X-ray of one of her legs because she was limping. Turned out that she had fractured her leg from jumping off the back of the couch. They told us that she would need surgery within the next day or two and that it would cost $2,500! With that being said, our immediately thought was, we don’t have that kind of money. So, I sold my car yesterday. I sold my car to make sure that we had the money to get the surgery that she needed. It took 3 days to get the money together, just 3 days! My husband brought her in to see about getting the surgery done since I sold my car. Now they are saying the surgery may not be needed since it is ‘starting to heal’. They are also quoting us on twice the cost as we were originally given! It’s a little odd to me that now that we have the money, they aren’t going to get her the surgery that she needs. She has an appointment there for next week, 4 days from now, to see how it has ‘healed’. For being a ‘teaching hospital’, this place sure charges more than they should! When we brought her in 3 days ago, it cost us $387 to get an X-ray of her leg. My dogs mean the world to me and I would do anything for them, seeing how I sold my car to get the money for the surgery, that they may not even do!

Waited 2 hours to pick up my cat even though the doctor said he's ready when we come in. Got moved to two different locations and in the end they didn't really tell me was caused his issues and told us to go to a different vet. Also was $600

I'd reccomend showing up for your appointments an hour later than scheduled. Not a very punctual bunch. I'll never accept another referral here.

The professional as well as the emotional dynamics of the facility make this an excellent place

Best care for pets in the area. It is a learning hospital so they like to explore. They will tell you what is wrong then how much it costs. Pay up front so be prepared. They have saved more than one of my dogs. Great people and good place for the animals. Everyone is friendly and very nice to the animals. There is construction all around the building so parking is a little confusing.

I’m from Chicago, and I’m so happy that I found this hospital. My dog Bike needed emergency surgery, otherwise he would be paralyzed. And we got that surgery same day. Bike is doing great now!!! Thanks to those people who helped us! God bless everyone

They do good work but it is all about the money. I felt that they did not really care about the family, it was more about padding the bill.

I can not thank you enough for the care and compassion we received this past Friday night. Dr Dorian helped my daughter and son in law with a traumatic decision. She was informative, patient and very kind. Although it was not an outcome they were hoping for, she gave them the time needed to say goodbye and make a decision for what was best for their baby. It was a very difficult evening but everyone we met was amazing and understanding. Thank you. We hope to never need your emergency services again but would recommend you highly!

I recently went here with my puppy and I do feel he was well taken care of medically. However I was absolutely appalled by how one of the students was talking to scared/stressed pet parents. Luckily I didnt have to deal with her but I overheard many of her conversations with parents in the waiting area. She was just extremely condescending and completely lacked any compassion. I was so upset over hearing her tone and derogatory remarks to overwhelmed parents. Parents would ask about possible things to do to save their animal and, since they are not doctors, alot of their suggestions didnt make sense but were rather out of desperation. Instead of responding compassionately she just made them feel so dumb at such a vulnerable time. I understand she is just a student but until she learns these critical skills I don't think the hospital can allow her to talk to the parents.

Dr. Weisman and Dr. Hoeksema were extremely professional and took their time to first listen to my concerns before examining my cat in the small animal emergency room, even though it was very busy. After examination they explained their findings, what steps would be next (regardless of where I chose to seek further treatment), and were very open to explaining the costs of treatment if they were to treat him themselves. I sincerely appreciated the honesty during the discussion of the results, and the respect for choosing how I wanted to move forward with diagnostics.

Our dog was diagnosed with histoplasmosis. These wonderful people saved my girls life. They were awesome at keeping us informed on her progress which was pretty dire at first. Now our girl is home but still has a long road to full recovery. They still call me daily checking on her progress and to see if I have any questions. I would recommend this hospital to anyone who has a sick pet. I can't thank them enough!!!!

This is our go to place when out very isn't available. They have gotten is through troubles 3 times now. As they said on the TV show M*A*S*H, the best care anywhere!

I would not call it a red light, but if your pet have any emergency and is treated at purdue small animal hospital, make sure to call them continuously for follow up. They will not call you. I agree with other comments: purdue small animal hospital has helpful and knowledgeable doctors, but my experience is not satisfying due to their feedback system. My hamster was suggested a fecal test for preventative purpose, and I was told to expect a call back in about 3 days, which never happened. I waited for more than one week with no follow up. So I decided to call them and was told "It is all good" with no extra information (What did you exactly test for? I know this place is a reliable provider, otherwise I would seriously question whether we really got the test with this type of feedback). Whoever processed the testing result is the worst part of purdue small animal hospital and they need some training to match the expertise of other staff.

We had an issue with our dog. No help given what so ever. This place is a money grab. If you hat your pet this is the place for you.

I've waited to leave a review so that i could let the loss of my best friend Rocco sink in and not post anything too soon. I want to be the first to say I'm grateful these ER clinics exist however giving even 1 star to Purdue Small Animal Clinic is 1 too many. My English Bulldog has battled seizures for 10.5 of his 11 years of life. We've controlled them with medication. Last week he had several seizures, disoriented, and wasn't himself as can be expexted with seizures. I trusted the clinic to help figure out what was wrong. We walked in and got him checked in. They took him back on a gurney since he wasn't walking well. They did bloodwork on him and an overall evaluation. They brought him into our waiting area (private room) and began telling us he looked good overall and they couldn't explain the seizures without further testing. The test that needed to be done wouldn't show immediate results. They advised we should take him home, monitor him, and take him to our vet the next morning. We weren't satisfied, asked LOTS of questions, and had to accept this as the final answer. They stated they'd get paperwork ready and we were free to go. Within 2 minutes of the senior vet and student walking out, Rocco had a seizure. I opened the door, saw the doc and asked him to hurry in and explained he was seizing. He somewhat shook his head as if he was upset I was taking more time and walked my way. He walked in and looked down at Rocco seizing and said "yes that's a seizure." We apologized for the accident he had on the floor and SENIOR Clinician Dr. David Yenerich left to get a mop. He came back in the room and mopped around Rocco but wasn't careful to not hit / bump him with the mop head while cleaning and talking to us. Multiple times i saw the mop hit my dog while cleaning up the mess. 3.5 hours later and little reassurance he increased his medicine he was already taking before coming in to the clinic. I paid the $280 but the service and compassion wasn't worth $10. I lost Rocco the next morning after more seizures and no hope stopping them. I notice in the reviews that you thank those that give 5 star ratings and say nothing to those that give less than perfect ratings. Just a thought - a simple apology may help some folks grieving or may give comfort to those who feel they got less than expected. In my situation it'll help nothing because my best friend is gone now and his final moments were getting a pee soaked mop head pushed up against him and on him. I didnt expect a miracle. I simply wanted to find him comfort. That's not too much to ask. Thank you for helping and saving the many animals that need your services. I wish i could be selecting 5 stars myself. Regards, Joe Dwigans

We took our 2 year old Akita Amaya here after the University of Illinois couldn't do her surgery. She basically broke her neck and the break was so bad that Purdue was the only place that was comfortable enough to do her surgery. I found the doctor's to be very educated on her problems and knew what needed to be done, and all are so compassionate.

12:00 am to 3:00 am on a Sunday were the hours I spent at this facility (that fact alone is enough for me to recommend them) and everyone who spoke to me and handled my cat was friendly, polite, informative, knowledgeable, and in better spirits than one could ask for at such hours during a stressful situation. I never had a doubt in my mind about their concern for my pet's well-being. I absolutely recommend taking your pets here.

We took our 11 year old dog to Purdue small animal hospital last night and arrived at 11:20pm. Quickly checked in and were taken back to a small room. We were asked what symptoms our dog was presenting, and we told them vomiting for two days, no interest in food, and possible seizure. She was taken from us for the initial exam which was $120 and we were told the doctor would be in to discuss a further treatment plan. No problem...the problem I then had was no contact for three hours and being left in the same room with zero updates. After three hours the lady came back in and said the doctor should be in soon. He did arrive only to tell us that they had other emergencies come in that needed attended to before our dog. Fine but for God's sake let us know and let our dog stay with us. Also, they needed to do an abdominal x-ray and bloodwork. Great do what you need to. He came back after another hour and told us she needed fluids and they were recommending her to stay all night and repeat the x-ray around 9-10am. After the lack of compassion, a complete runaround, no updates, we opted out of the overnight stay and decided to have fluids somehow put in under her skin to absorb slowly. We have an appointment with our dogs veterinarian today and know we will get the treatment we deserve. Purdue was a complete let down, and the only compliment I will give is before we left they said our dog has a great personality. I agreed with them and thought too bad Purdue didn't show us what their stellar reputation as a leading animal hospital was all about. And our bill was $449 which included bloodwork, x-rays and fluid injected under her skin on her back. I will never use them again not professional or empathetic. Obviously we thought our dog was emergent as well or we wouldn't have drove an hour at 10:30 at night. Thanks but no thanks...

Service was ok but I can't recommend the practice. For an $1,800 surgery, they suggested I use CareCredit. I did. BUT, the clinic only allows for 6-mos interest free payments. They do realize the strain that puts on people but don't seem to care. The clinic decides the interest free period and not the card company. Instead of the 12 -18 months plan that the card allows, the practice doesn't seem to take the customer into consideration at all. Also, from the initial visit when the surgery was scheduled, I let them know I needed to pick up my dog first thing, early in the morning since I still had to work and had a 2+ hour drive to get home. Once they had my dog there, they held her hostage and wouldn't let her leave until late morning. All the updated calls said she was fine, she was eating and had used the bathroom. BUT, still she can't be released. Go somewhere else. This is not a customer friendly practice from my perspective.

My dog had a week at Purdue small animal hospital and it was stressful to say the least. Tyson had a thyroid tumor and after some tests it was decided he was a candidate for surgery. We were nervous wrecks to leave him there and get this done. That’s when we met Joseph Richichi. Joe was the senior student that was assigned to Tyson. The moment we met Joe, he sat on the ground cross legged to be by Tyson while discussing the surgery. He explained to us that he will call us morning and night for updates and that he will personally be sitting with Tyson after surgery until he’s stable. And he did just that. When we picked Tyson up, Joe was so excited to tell us how great everything went. He had met Tyson two days before that and took care of him with an amount of passion and enthusiasm that made us feel safe. Our surgeon, Dr. Beatriz Belda Lopez, was so friendly, professional and did a fantastic job in caring for our boy. I couldn’t be happier with the team that helped us get through this emotional week.

I am the owner of a lovable pug who recently injured her claw. She was bleeding a bit and whining, and she didn’t seem to be able to put weight on that foot comfortably. I went to the Purdue Vet Clinic (ER) to have her looked at. I am giving Purdue Vet Clinic 2.5 stars because they treated her paw with minimal intervention and she is healing up well. For that I am very grateful. However, I am taking 2.5 stars because I felt that the staff failed to consider both my and my pug’s feelings and comfort for the duration of our visit. I also feel that they violated some basic rights by failing to secure my permission before they took my dog from me for the duration of our visit. After waiting for a bit, she and I were taken back to an examination room by a senior vet student. I asked the student if I should set my pug down on the examination table but he said that he would hold her. To my surprise, he immediately left the room with her in his arms muttering what I think was supposed to be an explanation as he exited. I was shut inside and, as I soon discovered, not allowed to leave the room. I sat there by myself wondering what was going on for five or ten minutes. Then a clinic employee accidentally opened the door to the room that I was in. And while she did agree to check in on my dog, it should be noted that she had tried to quickly shut the door before I could speak to her. Afterward, the vet student came back to inform me that “they weren’t sure but they would probably have to sedate [my dog] and remove her claw,” but this wasn’t definite. Meanwhile, my dog was kept...somewhere. I still hadn’t been informed of where they had taken her or when they planned on returning her to me. Perhaps separating the pet from its owner is standard procedure for a Veterinary ER (?) But if so, this was not explained to me. And I did not give them permission to take my dog from me for the duration of the visit... or to confine me in a room. After 20 more minutes, the Vet came in with the vet student. This was only after I asked for a status update. This is another issue; I had to press them to get any information about my dog. Never did they come of their own volition to let me know how she was doing and they seemed annoyed at me for asking. I stood when they came into the room. The Vet told me to sit down. She then informed me that the “technician was busy holding [my pug] because she’s just really cute” and that I needed to be patient because they “teach while [they] are working.” Also, the vet student said that earlier on in our visit, he had taken her and put her in a cage. They did not explain exactly why they had taken my pug in the first place but I deduced what I could from the vet’s explanation. From what I gathered, they separated my dog from me so that they could show “a cute pug” [their words] to the vet students unhindered by me, the owner. Under normal circumstances, I wouldn’t mind letting a stranger play with her or even hold her. But we were at the ER and I was a worried dog owner. And my dog suffers from separation anxiety. It was not the time or the place for the staff to be parading my pug around. She was separated from the only person she knew, hurt and in a new environment and I was worried and unsure about the extent of her injury for the majority of my visit. It would have been in both of our best interests to keep her near me, unless separation was absolutely necessary. To be clear... I would have been okay with vet students being present during the examination and subsequent nail trim. All they had to do was ask. But they didn’t ask. When they returned her to me 40 minutes later, she was trembling and panting. I have had my dog since she was puppy and I could tell that she was distressed- even if they could not. This upset me even more. I am grateful to them for helping my dog. But I did not like the overall lack of professionalism and lack of consideration for our feelings.

Oh, this vet. One word: Amazing. They saved my Pit's life, not once but twice. When he was a puppy that was ran over by an F-250 and when he was 7 and diagnosed with Lymphoma. They took care of all of my animals that I took in there, whether for cancer treatments or for emergency after hours visits. I think what people need to understand most about this vet hospital is that they are also a teaching school. You will interact with a student, the time is much longer than a standard vet, and you will have questions that may not get answered right away. What you should also know is every one of those people that are working with your animal has a love for animals that I have never experienced at a standard vet. They truly care about you and your pet; the care they provide for your pet, is all the proof you need. This vet is by far the best place I have been to in Lafayette and West Lafayette. The Oncology Department is fantastic, understanding, and compassionate. I mean, the vet cried when we had to put our Pit down. I received personal cards from numerous people that we worked with during Cooper's treatment. Purdue Small Animal Hospital will always, always hold a special place in my heart. It saddens me to hear and see people say awful things about them because they truly are an exceptional group of people. All I can say is just find the understanding that this is a learning facility and some of these students are learning right along with you. These are students you are "dealing" with, the vet is in the back taking care of YOUR animal. The student is relaying the messages, possible diagnoses, and possible treatment to you. If they do not have an answer, they will ask the vet that is literally taking care of your pet as you are speaking to the student.

Mallory, the Veterinary student, is AMAZING! She was so thorough in gathering Winston's health history and explaining all of his test results/discharge information. I could tell she genuinely cared about my sweet boy. As a crazy cat mom, it was very comforting to have a fellow cat lover watching over him. Mallory, you are going to be an INCREDIBLE vet! Thanks for making our first trip to Purdue a wonderful experience. You have a real gem on your hands, Purdue!

Brought our young adult rescue shih tzu here in August of 2017 with the intention of him having surgery to correct an involuntary urine leaking problem. We went to Purdue based on recommendations from our local vet and a local vet specialty center (Chicago area). The first day at Purdue was spent doing testing and examination. At the end of that day it was concluded that surgery may not be able to correct the problem as we had originally anticipated. We made the decision to cancel the surgery and bring our dog home the following morning. ***We did not want to put him through surgery unless the doctors were confident his problem could be corrected.*** The following morning when we arrived to pick him up to drive back home, the specialist sat us down and convinced us that he COULD fix the problem even though the night before they were uncertain. I was in tears as I was unsure about all of this, but again, the doctor assured us the problem could be corrected via surgery. So we made the decision to leave our dog and drive back home. I cried the entire way home uncertain if we made the right decision or not but my mom told me to have faith in the doctors. Surgery was performed and the issue ended up not being able to be fully corrected after all. My fears realized. Our dog spent several days there recuperating. The poor thing now had a very large incision that had to heal. We began nursing him back to health at home and soon after he began regurgitating food right after he would eat. This started becoming a regular occurrence. A dog that had never thrown up before since we adopted him, now could not keep food down. We started adding water to his food while he was recovering (mind you this wasn't even kibble, it was that brand sold in refrigerators at the store) with some success of full digestion. We eventually introduced him back to his very high end kibble in hopes that he had recuperated enough and could go back to eating normally. Bad decision as he could not keep that down at all. He would begin gagging after eating and then regurgitate everything with a phlegmy substance. Since the surgery (total cost of $3648.86) we have spent thousands of dollars more on visits to our local vet trying to get to the bottom of why he regurgitates his food (he still does to this day almost 2 YEARS LATER). Our best guess is something happened to his esophagus during the surgery. He now is hand-fed incredibly expensive canned food three times a day to avoid regurgitation. If he happens to sneak kibble from our other dogs bowl, he regurgitates. Very dangerous as this could lead to aspiration pneumonia. To sum up, we had a terrible experience as his original leaking issue remains (he wears diapers 24/7) plus the new problem since surgery of regurgitating his food. I cry often for him as I can't imagine his quality of life is that great even though we try to give him the absolute best care possible. I do not recommend Purdue.

This is one of the best animal hospitals around. The oncology department is nothing short of amazing!!!! Dr. Markham and Dr. Rossman are two of the most talented down to earth caring doctors you could ever hope to encounter. The whole staff was great to my dog Mac, and my whole family whenever we visited them for treatment. Dr. Rossman and Dr. Markham came up with a treatment plan specific to my dogs cancer. They worked with my schedule and my local veterinarian (Advanced Animal Medical) in Dyer IN. I live in St. John which is 90 minutes away from Purdue. Not very close but not super far either. Thanks to the whole Oncology team my dog went from having a few weeks left to live. To living a happy pain free life for another 14 months. Unfortunately he ended up passing away, but if it wasn’t for the team at Purdue we wouldn’t have enjoyed another happy year with him. I just want to thank everyone there again for all their hard work they put in for my beloved dog Mac.

Incredibly disappointed. I scheduled a planned c section after doing all of the appropriate testing, pregnancy confirmation driving 2.5 hours in a mild snowstorm for the breeding to a veterinarian who is a specialist in breeding for Purdue to tell me they would do the planned c-section with appropriate reverse progesterone testing. PLANNED c section (I scheduled in December) was for February 5th. I called the evening of February 2nd because I was alerted my girl wasn't on the surgery schedule for Monday. I was removed from the surgery schedule due to not going THERE due to not having an ultrasound and exam done. HOWEVER no one EVER told me this was a requirement and needed to be done before the appt. Was scheduled. This is a French bulldog. Absolutely cannot deliver on their own. I WILL never give Purdue my services emergency or not. WILL make the drive to University of Illinois.

We had our second cat that died because Purdue didn’t bother trying hard enough. They sent him home saying he just had a cold/feline herpes and said there wasn’t anything too abnormal with his blood work. He spent two days howling and when my mom came home last night she decided to take him back to Purdue, and he died in the car. My mom told me that a vet told her that their staff should have caught something and messed up. That’s not good enough.

Our experience was good. Dr. Ostenkamp, the cardiology intern we saw, was very personable and knowledgeable. We feel fortunate to have been seen here. My 1-year-old dog had a full cardiac evaluation because of critically low taurine. Fortunately, there was no cardiac enlargement. We never saw or spoke to the veterinary cardiologist, but I assume he viewed the films or SOMETHING, since this is a teaching hospital. After all the tests, Dr. Ostenkamp said, “I’m not gonna lie. He was a little naughty on the table.” Horrified, I thought he might have eaten her stethoscope or launched himself off the table to play with a passing dog. But no, she said he was “squirmy.” I wonder how a person teaches her 1-year-old dog to lie motionless during an echocardiogram. Naughty indeed!

We took our dog in because she injested rat and mouse poison. She was doing very well. Then 3 days later she made a turn for the worse. Took her in to our vet. They just so happened tested her for Parvo. She tested positive for it. We are very concerned she may have picked it up at Purdue. No, we never had her vaccinated for it. Shame on us. But we want to warn everyone. To be careful going to Purdue. They should have cleaned their rooms better. Or they should have quarantined the sick animal. No we are not one hundred percent positive. That she picked it up there but it sure looks like it.

I AM NEVER COMING HERE AGAIN. My cat was having seizures and I brought him here and they REFUSED to take care of him without a payment first. If they cared about animals, they would take care of them first THEN deal with payments. It's not like I have $300 just sitting in my bank account .THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOU OR YOUR PETS!!!!!

After our chinchilla couldn't urinate for a couple of days, we did some research. We determined that he had a calcium build-up blocking his urethra. Obviously, this is an emergency, so I called this vet and told them I needed a surgery done that day, or he would die. No problem, they said. If it's an emergency, they'll do the surgery that day, no re-scheduling needed. Great. After confirming this fact in three separate phone calls, we bring the chinchilla over. After 7 HOURS of x-raying him, they determine that he has a calcium build-up in his bladder three times the size of his urethra. So we were right. But they insist it's not an emergency, and re-schedule him for possible surgery 4 weeks later. But all is not lost. They prescribe him with a special dosage of Advil to ease the pain. Did you know Advil is heavily toxic to chinchillas? We sure learned that, and they should have known that. So after giving him Advil and thinking we killed him the first night, here we are on day three. And guess what. I get to bury him tonight. Our chinchilla died because this vet lied to us, couldn't identify an emergency when told exactly what was wrong and looking at extensive x-rays of the problem, and recommended something that would kill our pet. It takes talent to mess up something that I could have had done with a simple cat & dog vet. And that's not an exaggeration, because I had this exact procedure done on my cat before. Thanks for killing our pet, guys.

They are the best when it comes to animal care.

Went there for an MRI but they forgot to put the MRI on the original bill so we got an additional bill a month and a half after the fact for an additional large chunk. They played with their numbers to get the max billing out of their estimates. They could not figure out what was wrong with her after several visits, they wanted to do an autopsy and said they would take care of the autopsy charge but at this point, one month later, I am still being billed for it. I would recommend taking your pet somewhere else.
