very impressed. They know what there doing and love there patients. They also explain thoroughly what can be done to help your pet (child ).

We had excellent care and compassion from the entire medical team (attending physicians, residents, and technicians). Our sweet 8 year old boxer dog received thorough emergency care. Sadly, she was critically ill and had to be euthanized. We were so grief stricken but received a lot of warmth and kindness from all of the hospital staff. I would highly recommend this veterinary care facility.

Cathy Rock

Friendly staff but took six and a half hours to get X-rays

Took my Dog over Memorial Day weekend and didn't have a real vet there to treat my baby, my big baby didn't make it . I am not happy with this place!!!!!

We had an incredible experience with Dr. Souza and the medical team at the Small Animal Hospital. Our 12 year-old dachshund was diagnosed with an extremely rare adrenal gland tumor but Dr. Souza was intimately familiar with the condition. We went through with surgery and I felt my pet was in the best hands before, during, and after the procedure. Two weeks out and our sweet pet seems to be back to his old self for hopefully many more years to come. My only critique of the experience is that the scheduling and check-out procedures seemed to be an afterthought. We could not get scheduled for an exam and imaging on the same day even if we put a deposit on the imaging time so it was not a waste for the hospital. Surgery was only done on certain days and the scheduling team had no concept of what the medical team was doing or empathy for someone traveling from out of town to line up all of these items to make the stay in town as short as possible for both the pets and the humans. If this could have been handled in a better way the entire experience would have been flawless. Overall, the medical care seemed to be the absolute best we could get in the state and I would recommend you get here if your pet's life is on the line.

Our 15 lb. Rat Terrier Mix, Desiree was diagnosed Bladder Cancer back on March 30th at the UF Small Animal Hospital. Over the past 4 months we've tried various holistic approaches to eliminate the cancer with some degrees of success. We brought Desiree to the UF Animal Hospital from her primary care Vet down in Naples on a Sunday Evening around 7:00 p.m, July 8, 2018. Dr. Gallagher realizing the urgency of her situation graciously rearranged his busy schedule to remove her urinary catheter deploying a stent by 10:30 a.m. Monday morning. The placement of the stent has freed her from being tethered to an uncomfortable urinary catheter giving her more time and a much better quality of life. We are forever grateful to him for saving her life and increasing her prospect of healing. The care that we've received at the UF Small Animal Hospital is far and above the best in the state. Dr. Gallagher did an outstanding job of making sure that we were educated throughout the process which was comforting. We found him to be very professional which was very reassuring going into the surgery. The UF Small Animal Hospital is very fortunate to have someone of Dr. Gallagher's caliber. We give both them both our highest praise and recommendation going forward. Marsha & Brady Fennell St. Augustine, FL

We took our 1 year old puppy to UF for a life-saving heart operation to open one of his valves that was only working at 50%. The staff their are exceptional and really love their job and helping animals. The facility is excellent and up-to-date with the latest equipment. It isn't cheap but the work they do is expensive so there must be a cost landing somewhere. We would choose to go back here with him for any heart issues in the future, despite the 2.5 hour drive.

My friends dog was bit by a coral snake. I called multiple small animal hospitals before I had to call UF Small Animal Hospital. All the small hospitals spoke with me in length about how to help and then referred me to UF. I called UF and briefly explained my situation to the person that answered. He told me he wasn't trained in that area. So, I asked to speak with someone that was more familiar to try and ask about the antivenom because it is so expensive and if it would even work for his dog. He then said that the doctors aren't allowed to speak with anyone until their animal is brought in to the clinic. And also that it would be $130 (give or take, I cant remember exact) just to be seen. I sat there for a second kind of stunned that this was going to be the end of the conversation. And it was. 1 star for at least picking up the phone. Thanks for literally nothing.

Absolutely wonderful veterinary care. We drive two hours to bring our pets here. We have seen several doctors, surgeons, techs, and students. Everyone has been extremely knowledgeable, and caring toward our animals. They have caught several things our local vet missed, including life-threatening conditions. Definitely worth getting a second opinion here if your vet can't treat. We have decided to bring all of our animals here, despite the drive, from now on, unless it's something really minor. Thank you UF small animal hospital staff and doctors for caring as much as you do!

Visited the UF Small Animal Hospital for an emergency with my cat. They quickly got her back and kept me updated. To be clear, there is a $130 charge upfront for emergency services PLUS diagnostics, meds, fluids, etc. Its expensive but when you have an emergency these are the folks to go to.

How often can you say you are in the absolute best place anywhere to get the help you need? You will be at UF Small Animal Hospital. From the initial contact to discharge review you and your pet will be treated with kindness and respect by the most compassionate and competent people you are likely to ever encounter. My husband and I commuted from Miami so that Dr. Whitley, assisted by the outstanding team members in the Departments of Ophthalmology and Anesthesiology, could operate on our fragile 9-year-old, six-pound Affenpinscher. Everyone we encountered, whether working in housekeeping, the cafe, the clerical department, or the medical department, was friendly, helpful, and seemed deservedly proud to be part of such a dedicated group. Many thanks to all--especially Dr. Whitley, Dr. Boss, Wayne Garcia, Holly and Leah--who helped our angel Chloe and us during a stressful time.

Had a very positive experience. Dr and students were helpful and professional. Gave us options, didn't steer us toward expensive procedures. Felt prices were reasonable. Was impressed with facilities. Was above most county hospitals I've seen.

Sue Clark

Staff is overthetop caring, professional, accommodating! The cardiology department is staffed with very special people.

emily hendges

The people were very friendly. The cost was reasonable/affordable and they didn't push you to buy things you don't need. The wait time was pretty short too since we called ahead. Very good experience. Vet was Julia wuerz, and I wish I remembered the name of her senior tech who I think may have been a student, but they were both very nice to my cat who is easily scared and thorough in treating him.

Love this place! My dog got spayed here and i was surprised at how thorough they were. She stayed overnight for observations and my vet called me all throughout the day with updates as to how her surgery went. I was very impressed!

On Sunday, August 25, 2019. My baby Missy of 9 years died in my arms while holding her. It was devastating for me, I completely lost my mind. I began to cry hysterically, my mother was able to call the UF Small Animal Hospital and asked where could we take Missy. The woman told her to bring Missy and they would be able to help. We picked up my sister and headed to the hospital. They were so nice and professional. They took Missy to get her cleaned up and allowed us to stay for a bit with her and grieve. I was in complete distress and wasn't ready to let go, but my mother persistently encouraged me to say my last goodbye. She was like a baby to me and I was so heartbroken. Today, we got a yellow envelope labeled "FRAGILE"... Upon opening it, There I found a paw print cement and a beautiful card enclosed. This was just so beautiful and considerate. I don't know how people can say bad things about this place. This very act alone, let me and my family know that if and whenever we decide to get another family member of canine decent we can always find comfort with the staff of UF Small Animal Hospital. Thank you all so very much, this meant the world to me. I shall forever keep these items... Naolani J Peavy

We brought our cat in on Sunday night and she was hospitalized due to the condition she was in. Her symptoms developed very suddenly - left head tilt, dragging limbs, disoriented, lethargic, and walking in circles. The staff members were very compassionate and explained everything from top to bottom. They encouraged questions and provided all of the information they had to offer. They recommended an MRI. The results were devastating to say the least, and we did not have a happy ending. This is the first pet we’ve had to euthanize and it was the hardest decision we’ve ever had to make. With that being said, the staff members were so caring, patient, and empathetic. They offered us as much time as we needed to say goodbye. The euthination process was very quick and we were able to hold her while it happened. When we were ready to let her go, they wrapped her up in a box and provided us with her paw prints on a round piece of clay to take home with us. Although the outcome wasn’t what we were prepared for, I’m confident that our experience was the best it could have been due to fantastic team here in Gainesville. Rest In Peace our sweet Nala...

Nothing but the best when you bring your animal to UF. Top notch across the board!

Doctors are wonderful, prices are very competitive (considering all that will be done) and building is beautiful. Wait times can be quite long though, but such is the standard fare at any teaching hospital.

My first experience with the University of Florida Veterinary Hospital was when my dogs rear legs would not move due to a car accident. He needed surgery. He had a team of surgeons, an anesthesiologist and rehab doctor. They contacted me numerous times the day of surgery and the days that he was in the hospital to give me updates. The facility is very clean and the staff is very compassionate. My dog walks now and can move his back legs 90%. He is very happy and loves his rehab doctor, Justin Schmalberg.

Thank you for understanding my devastation today when my Daisy dog decided to cross the rainbow bridge. You were all so kind. It is enough to deal with a hurricane hitting your home, and place of work in SWFL and then suddenly needing to make a choice for your beloved golden retriever of 15 1/2 years. My heart is shattered. However, I am grateful for your understanding.

Apologizes in advance for the long review, but I cant say enough of how amazing UF Small Animal Hospital is. After my 8yr old boxer was diagnosed with a Pitutary Brain tumor, I immediately started trying to find him a radiologist to get to. I went to Cancer Vets in Bonita Springs and was highly disappointed, as they were cold, impersonal, didnt review his MRI or talk in detail about his condition. I frantically tried to make an appointment with UF, as it was the week before Memorial Day. They didnt have an opening for the Radiologist, however, they got me in with the Oncology Medical team. From the moment I walked in to the front desk, I was comforted and saw the care the entire staff had. The young lady that took us to the room was so engaging with my dog and loving on him the entire time. Then the first Vet Student, Michael, came in, and again, the compassion was evident. My dog immediately took to him! Then Dr. Fox came in and spent over an hour with us, explaining everything! She educated us on his condition, what we could expect and then what treatment plans we could take. She ensured we were comfortable with the decision I was making. From then on, I knew this was the place I would trust with my dog. Fast-forward almost 5 weeks, 20rounds of radiation, multiple 3hr trips to pick him up for the weekends, he is home! On his last day there, I even teared up because of how thankful I was and am of everything they have done. They called me a minimum of 2x per day to update me, made arrangements for me to have him dropped off on the weekends and multiple calls from the vets to talk through his progress. He has a follow-up appointment in the next few weeks and I know he will be excited to see his friends again! Thank you for taking care of my little man and providing me peace of mind that he was in the best possible hands. I would recommend everyone and anyone to go to your facility to get support! I know I left out several pivotal people in this review, however, they were all absolutely remarkable. I truly cant say enough of how much I appreciate you all.

I just recently found out that my cat pretzel which is in the Dermatology research under dr. Santoro was prescribed a medication by the name of bravecto for flea and tick prevention was probably the worst thing to give to this cat which has a major sensitive skin issue. I'm sure you can imagine how upset I was when I found out that this was probably the worst thing to put on her. Not only that pretzel has been getting progressively worse with no positive result. Also I've spent close to $1,500 trying to figure out exactly what is wrong with her. By that I mean is it a bacteria or something a little more serious than that?

Great hospital , state of the art facilities - but one female horrible intern / doctor can ruin its reputation. Incompetent and horrifying vet, who had no intuitive skills and the compassion of a rock. Stay away.

JoAnn Marine

What an amazing experience! The most polite ,professional and thorough group of doctors and staff. Can't speak highly enough. Will recommend them to everyone.

I moved to Gainesville about 2 years ago for graduate school. My puppy started presenting with severe allergies and dermatitis since we moved. I sought for help outside of UF because I believed it to be cheaper and right around the same quality. Not only outside vets were more expensive, but they were not able to help my dog. When I decided to take my dog to UF, the vets were willing to work with me. They spent so much time with me explaining diagnosis and treatment, and they even gave me as many free samples (part of my dog's treatment) as they could to help out a fellow student. They have every specialty in veterinary medicine as we do for humans, they are all heavily involved in research, and they have more accessibility to certain drugs and treatments than other private offices. Overall, these vets are great, very knowledgable, and most likely the ones that taught other vets working around the area. I am extremely happy with my visit to UF and I know my dog is too.

They called me to get $130 from missed charges when I brought in my cat from being run over by a car. I paid almost $400 already and lost my pet... Thanks for that.

One of our Siamese cats had eye color changes and it was suggested that she be seen by an ophthalmologist so we chose to bring her here at UF. Great staff and everyone is very friendly and keep you informed every step of the way. I highly recommend UF Small Animal Veterinary Hospital/Clinic

Dr. Londono is not only inexperienced and teaching students but arrogant and unwilling to listen to what patients are telling him. He would have rather argue with previous confirmed diagnosis to be right than to treat your dog accordingly. My 17 year old dog who was poisoned with ivermectin from horse feces and sat in a crate with only an IV for 3.5 hours and was "stable" but miserably in pain. I asked for a pain med for his gas and was told bc he wasn't yelping out constantly that he was fine. He had been vomiting for about 14 hours, was shaking & wincing & obviously wasn't fine because they waited until I left & gave med 2 hours later. The doctor had presented this dog as stable which he wasnt. I was so annoyed that I questioned him in front of his female student groupies that he chose to take it out on my dog, allowing him to lie in a crate in pain for over 4 hours. I called to complain and the doctor wouldn't give me the name of the Chief who was in town. They instead gave me a name of the doctor who was unreachable and travelling abroad. I guess they were scared of the repercussions. Dr Newer hung up on me and NO vet would speak to me all night regarding care. They said dog still needed care so I left him overnight. When I called to check on him at midnight, the tech told me he got a blood transfusion. I immediately hit the floor and started crying bc he is 17. The tech was wrong. Oops wrong dog. She didn't have a clue and got them mixed up even though I gave name and description. I drive there & asked to see a veterinarian regarding care. I was told no and not allowed an update on my pet because they didn't want to "confuse" me. These people are a joke. Stay away. Esp Dr. Newer & Londono. What a joke. They say those who can't do teach. Case in point.

Love this place! Take your pet to UF! It'll be the best thing you ever did. I drive from Merritt Island to bring my pup here (2 1/2 hr drive). They go above and beyond to help. At no cost to me they made a 3d model of my puppy to determine whether she was eligible for surgery. You would not get that at a private practice. They are extremely affordable especially for the quality of care you receive. I'm talking thousands less. Honestly. I called 6 places in my area and UF beat all of them. Plus they were refunding me money every time I went in there. They give a high and a low estimate and they were always on the low end AND the cost was always below the deposit. You get a team of people: surgeons, Dr.s, radiologists, techs, teachers, students, nutritionists doing everything by the book working together the ideal way because they are teaching, and using the top medical equipment. Plus they call you at least twice a day to update you on your pet's condition. They are amazing! <3

They saved my baby louie pomeranian after spending 1000s at another vet in Jax fl I rushed him from jax to uf they are the best vet ever also were 1/2 the price of the vet in jax If you can get your baby to them go they have the best technology there and they will do everything possible to save your animal I will only take my dogs there and its over a hr away but 110% worth it. THANK YOU UF VETS!!!!!!!

Cooper the Pooper

Couldn’t be more happy with the excellent scare and attention, not only that Cooper has received, but that we’ve received. The staff is vets and vets students are dedicated, hard working doctors that seem to work around the clock caring for our pets. The facility is top notch, they have nothing to envy a human hospital. The state of Florida couldn’t have asked for a better hospital for their ailing pets.

Nina Bingaman

If you are extremely PATIENT and can wait over two hours to get your pet’s prescription then this place isn’t all that bad

I am sharing this review while the loss of my much-loved 14 year old cat is still raw. The vet and techs who helped us with the sudden decision of how or if to end our baby's life--I thank you all and you were kind and loving and gave us all the time we needed even though you were so busy yesterday. She passed in our arms knowing she was cared for and I do thank you. The one thing I would like to say: the young man who was working at the reception desk needs to learn some tact. When we brought our baby in, and a very loving young lady came out from the back to help us with her intake, the young man made a comment about our baby's not needing a "gurney" because "it's just a cat." The young lady covered for his insensitive comment by smiling at us and saying very gently, "This is not just a cat. Who do we have here?" Overall recommend for professional and caring staff but maybe frontline receptionists could be trained to be a bit more sensitive and aware.

We unexpectedly had an emergency with our 14 year old dog Charlie we rushed him here from another vet 2 hours away and they were fantastic to us and Charlie. We ended up losing him however they helped us though everything when we were. Just a wreck. I miss him so much and just yesterday I received a packed from the hospital it was a card and a plaster with his name and paw print on it. It brought me to tears because it was just so thoughtful of them to do this for us and mail it. I never thought of asking for something like this and it shows how caring they are.

Our first visit to UF was in April 2019 for our dog who had a mass on his face that had been previously diagnosed as allergies. Dr. Boyd in dermatology has been so helpful with the whole process diagnostic procedures. We got a CT of our dog's head on July 2, on the same day they ended up doing some biopsies as well. I waited for about 12 hours at UF that day for the CT to be completed, biopsies to be taken, and for the anesthesia to wear off before we went home. Dr. Boyd and her student, Trisha kept me very informed the entire time. Explained all the risks of the procedures. Dr. Boyd has been so helpful with pet insurance paper work as well. The dermatology liaison, Kathy is also very helpful and prompt when replying to emails. 10/10 would recommend bringing your pet here.

Brandy Balch-rankin

They are amazing! My animals are in great hands when they are with them.

I have been here about 7 times over the past two months and while not every experience has been terrible, I really wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. On the first visit they make everything so proper and they do the exam in front of you and thoroughly discuss the issues your pet has. Every exam after that is really just a joke. You take your pet back to the exam room and then they take the pet away to do some behind the scenes exam in the back that always takes at least two hours and then they charge you 2x the amount a regular vet would charge. Almost every recheck exam there is a different student that doesn’t know the history of your pet and you have to re-explain the situation every time, even when they have all the history typed up on their little papers. I don’t think they study them very well. Extremely expensive, $80+ for just a recheck exam that I don’t even get to see happen. The worst part about this entire experience is that my fur baby ended up needing surgery and the doctor told me the surgery would be quick and he made it sound like a 3 or 4 hour ordeal. I decided to stay and wait because I live in Ocala and it made no sense to drive all the way home just to come back in a few hours. Meanwhile I waited in my car and in their lobby for 6 hours just for them to tell me that I can’t pick my pet up until 5pm - 9 hours after I got there. I would have gone home had I known the surgery would take the entire day. I wasted my whole day and all they could tell me was that they would call me as soon as they could. Terrible communication. The only reason I give two stars is because some of the people are very nice and the place is nice as well. Wish I would have known all of this before giving them all of my money. None of my four kitties will be returning here.

Serina Esquivel

Came here for my 14 year old maltese about four times times, they did not fix anything about his urinary problem until the 4th time I came here. They only gave him some antibiotics and that's it. Their surgery costs, testings costs and the overnight costs are absolutely ridiculous. The vets take forever and I stay and wait here at least 3 hours everytime I come here. Save your money and time.

Nic Kaitaloipa

My cat was referred to the ER by my regular vet after she had a seizure. By the time I got to campus, they took her in and examined her promptly. They walked me and my husband through all of the diagnostic tests clearly, and were wonderfully kind and supportive when she had to be euthanized. They have a separate quiet room where we were able to spend time with her beforehand. Their staff also facilitated funerary arrangements. I really appreciate how well organized and compassionate they were while I was devastated.

Karin Lillis

I've had my rabbit here a few times for treatment of chronic eye issues. Great care from the residents and docs. The appointments take longer than they would at a regular vet, but it's essentially a teaching hospital. Just be sure to double-check the medication and/or aftercare instructions you get. Most of the time, they're pretty thorough but this last time they overlooked a few things.

I just wanted to drop you a letter to tell you how very much I appreciated the love and care that you showed me and my baby, Dakota. Throughout the chemo process, you all kept Dakota pain-free, for which I will always be so grateful. Your entire staff were always careful to make Dakota feel safe and comforted through all the procedures. People, like all of you, that really show that it isn’t “Just a job” and are so compassionate, make the journey a lot easier. The process of chemo for 6 months allowed me to have over a year with Dakota that I wouldn’t have otherwise had. He went to the Rainbow Bridge on October 7, 2016. Although my heart is broken, I know that he was never in pain during his cancer treatments and had 15 years in which he was very much loved and gave us all unconditional love. I am forever grateful for your extraordinary team and I will forever be indebted to you. Always, Connie Kerce Family of Dakota Kerce 6/30/2001 to 10/7/2016

My 7 week old Siberian Husky had her "third" eye lacerated by my cat (it was a very unfortunate accident). We had planned a trip down to Ocala when this happened minutes before we are set to leave, it didn't look so bad but quickly got worse the next day. Being a late Saturday night, most vets were closed. I decided to call the UF Pet Emergency Treatment Services. I explained what happened and she informed me, to save money and time, it would be better to take her straight to the UF Small Animal Hospital to see an Ophthalmologist. Of course at this point I knew it was serious and was very worried for my new fur baby. I called the emergency line at UF Animal Hospital the next morning and they told me to come right in. She had her eye examined and figured the best course if action was surgery. I was very worried as she is only a 7 week old puppy but they made me feel comfortable and at ease about the procedure. I dropped her off Monday morning for the surgery. They called me a before and after the surgery with updates, which definitely helped with the anxiety. They definitely care a great deal about you and your animal. All in all, the surgery was a wonderful success. They were able to suture her third eye lid back together, which had to be a very delicate procedure. I can't even begin to express how impressed I am with this Animal Hospital, the friendly staff and doctors and the amazing surgeon's! They went above and beyond for our little Athena. She's is great spirits and recovering like a champ! I recommend this Veterinary Hopsital to anyone who has a animal emergency. Thank you so much for taking care of Athena

I can't imagine a more backwards facility. From intake to faulty billing weeks later, my experience was a nightmare. Communication from staff was sparse and unhelpful. My pet was given two procedures "accidently" that never should have been done. Bloodwork was lost. Answers were nowhere to be had due to "difficulty communicating between departments". Do not bring your animals here. They wont recieve professional care and you may be billed much more than discussed after the fact.

I absolutely love this place. My now 3 year old Blue Heeler began limping about a year and a half ago out of nowhere. His regular vet tooks xrays and said it was his back. After a month of bed rest with no improvement, I decided to go here to the Integrative Medicine department for physical therapy/rehab. Shiloh's first visit was stressful and expensive (Orthopedic exam, Neurologist exam, CT scan with sedation) but proved to be incredibly valuable and necessary. They diagnosed him with bilateral elbow dysplasia and recommended medications for pain until I mentioned I would like to keep him off the NSAIDs for as long as possible due to their side effects. They happily recommended numerous supplements that have helped keep him active and able to do what he loves (long hikes, Frisbee and playing with his sister). The package deal they offer for their rehab services for a full day are absolutely the best. We moved a few months ago so I do not know if they have changed the prices but when we went it was $100 a day for a full 8 hours of rehab (swimming, laser, acupuncture, underwater treadmill, etc). I currently work at a vet clinic that offers rehab and they were flabbergasted at that package deal and are now considering something similar. I would 100% recommend UF Small Animal Hospital for all pets, regardless of reason why they need to go!

These people are basically used car salesmen with PHD's. Brought our injured cat in with a bullet wound which required leg amputation. Literally double anywhere else would charge and with a bleeding cat and hysterical girlfriend, I guess we looked like easy targets. So 4k later we have a fixed cat, which I guess is worth two stars. For a student hospital to charge double the price of any regular vet seems ridiculous. But hey when you have an emotionally connected owner and a few grand in their bank account, why not charge something obnoxiously high right?

Staff here is super nice and VERY caring. I was quite surprised at the more than reasonable rates for services. Love that they offer integrated care as well as treatment.

Understaffed and unprofessional. Waited over three hours for my dog to be seen. Will never recommend or return

I can't thank enough Dr. Michelle and Jessica , thank you so much for all the love and care you gave to my baby Princess , I'm from Orlando and I recommend Small Animal Hospital to everyone who wants their pet to receive the best health care; it is worth the drive. Jessica again thank you for all the daily calls and updates. You and your team are AMAZING !!!

I could have seen a local vet in Lake City but drove down to Gainesville as my dog has a history with UF. She has always had a Wellness Plan and been seen there. She had an eye discharge and the whites of her eyes had turned pink. I pointed out several times that Lake City right now has a very high Weed Pollen count and that I had recently changed her dogfood. I was fairly sure she was having an allergic reaction to one of those issues. My options were to Pay the $130 fee and leave WITHOUT a treatment plan or to let their Opthamoligist look at her eyes and Pay $331. The diagnosis......... Conjunctivitis. It took $403. to get her a very small tube of ointment to treat her eyes for allergies. Shame on them.

M E

Really caring, knowledgeable staff. Dr. Story made a very stressful experience as easy as possible.

One of your employees sheila Pham is VERY unprofessional. You should train them better on how to talk to people and to not be ignorant!!!

I can not say enough about this place! I will never use another emergency vet or specialist. They actually love their jobs and it shows.

I brought my dog in to see an eye doctor. They were amazing with her and so helpful!!!!
