The vets are so honest with you and don’t sugar coat it. My dog Max has been horrible but these vets have made me feel like he will get the help he needs. I appreciate how hard they have been helping me. I wouldn’t go anywhere else but here because their the hero’s our little families want. ❤️

Great vets, especially Dr. Goldkamp. Dr. Murphy was also good when she found a heart condition in our dog. At our pet's end, the tending emergency vet was very understanding and supportive. Due to demand, front desk sometimes gets overwhelmed. Signage about priorities such as emergency call-ins, and little more attention to people waiting would benefit this overall great operation.

I wish this hospital was a primary vet as well instead of just emergency. I’d drive an hour or so just to go here over other places. They are kind, compassionate, and made one of the worst days of my life easier for me. I will always be grateful to the emergency vet that took the time to speak to me about my options and what I should do with my dog that we all knew was going to die soon despite all of the treatments and thousands of dollars I had spent trying to save her. Forever grateful to these amazing doctors

Dr Walsh and his team (James and Karen) are amazing. Going above and beyond for my 15 yr old doxy. Dr Walsh has given him 5+ yrs of life when other vets gave up on him. Everyone is caring and kind. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

If I could give 10 stars I would. The staff was wonderful, kind and compassionate. Every person from the receptionist I spoke to before going in, the techs and the vet who helped our girl pass were the best. They didn't try to do any unnecessary treatment. We knew it was time and they did exactly what we wanted and needed. Thank you ladies you tried your best to make a difficult time for us a little better. I am forever grateful.

Dr. Bowersox and staff have been great from the beginning with our Gracie's eye surgery and follow ups (still a work in progress). Every question we've had, Dr. Bowersox has taken the time to answer to our satisfaction. Even if it's a short recheck visit, he still spends as much time as needed to make sure we have enough info to go on. This is our second experience with VSC, having a dog with an auto immune disease treated at their former place going on 10+ years ago. They were absolutely wonderful then and continue to be. We are thankful that they have appointments in Dover also, so the down state people don't have to travel as far for follow ups. The staff at their old place, the present place in New Castle and those in Dover are always friendly and helpful. My Gracie loves Miss Brooke!

Worst place I have ever taken my dog! They ripped me off 5300.00 to tell me my dog had cancer. It became a money making scam. Will never take my animals there. Plus they lied about my dog and said he was aggressive when I complained of the treatment. My dog was the nicest dog you would ever meet. My friends and family will never go to them either.

The VSCD has been great. I'm so glad they opened a location in New Castle a few years ago, we hated going to VCA for emergencies. I've been to VSCD many of times with emergencies. As well as some of my cats have been/ are regular patients there as well. I love everyone there. The ladies at the front desk are so pleasant and nice and know my face, which I'm sure is a bad thing lol. Dr. Diroff has been a god send and Alanna is awesome. Everyone there (techs, nurses etc..) are so nice. We love (including my pets) VSCD!!! Will not go anywhere else!!!

I'll go into more detail since I initially only posted 5-stars. My fiancee and I had never been here until New Year's Day 2018 when our husky experienced 3 significant seizures despite being medicated for epilepsy. Since it was 3am when the third seizure occurred our options were limited but Veterinary Specialty Center of Delaware was open and told us to come. They were wonderful and spent a lot of time talking to us about our options long-term and prescribing and providing in-house a new medication. Unfortunately this April our husky fell incredibly ill and, after two vet visits at out normal vet, he declined rapidly on a Saturday night and once again we were left with few options. We took him here again and, while it wasn't the news we were hoping for, they were able to examine him, conduct blood-work in-house, and really break-down our options and the potential cost. Due to his medical history and and likelihood of recovery, we had to make the tough decision to put him down and the staff was beyond compassionate and understanding and ensured that they were silver lining in an obviously terrible situation. While I wish we had to come here for normal check-ups, I will forever be grateful for their expertise, compassion, time, and willingness to go the extra mile.

I have had several experiences over the years at this Specialty Center and am so grateful for the compassionate care my pets have received. They are beyond professional and caring. It started with my cat Jango needing to spend several days there with a urinary tract issue. We thought we were going to lose him, but they stabilized him and he is a happy healthy cat today. The vet called me every day to update me and someone was available every time I called to check on him. The compassion I received when I had to put 2 of our beloved cats to sleep was so comforting. Losing pets is never easy, and losing Tugger and Magoo was heartbreaking. They were professional and so helpful. Dori spent a night there and got wonderful treatment. I am so glad they are so close to home and available when I need them!

My experience here with Radiocat was exceptional thanks to the caring of Erika. She admitted my cat and cared for him while he was there for treatment. She called every day to update me, and answered all my questions (including, could you cuddle him? to which she said yes, I already have). It was very difficult to leave my beloved pet for 4 days with no visitation allowed due to the procedure. It would have been much more difficult if not for Erika's care and attention. I would recommend Radiocat here to anyone. BTW, I live in Pennsylvania and came here instead of a treatment center in Allentown. This facility charged 500$ less for the procedure, was good at keeping in touch for the preparation (not so when I was contacting Allentown), had availability one week sooner for the procedure, and let me take my cat home 3 days sooner. I give my highest recommendation.

Had an emergency on a Saturday afternoon. All other clincs and vets were close or had long waits. I did have to say goodbye to my sweet cat but I was so grateful for the kind and speedy service. Thank you for seeing me right away and helping me deal with the loss of my dear companion.

I just want to say thank you to the doctors and staff at VSCD! I had got my german shepherd puppy Mufasa a week ago and noticed he was not doing well. I took him to get checked at VCA and there Dr. Jennifer suggested he'd be taken in to start treatment for parvo. That was one of my worst nightmares and I kept praying it wasn't that. However, it was showing faint and we were told VSCD staff already knew we were coming and a round about cost for him to stay and start treatment. I was so scared and nervous, but upon arrival the staff was friendly, sympathetic and knowledgeable about what they could do to help Mufasa. He stayed overnight and they went to work with getting him better! Even though I could barely sleep because I was thinking about him all night I knew he was in good hands. When I called to check up on him I was happy to know he was doing well. So far since he's been home and we're following the instructions of giving him his medication and staying quarantined for a week he's shown signs of improvement and even has his ears standing up along with some weight! Thank you guys so much for the love and care you have shown to Mufasa! P.S. Sorry if he whined your ears off, he's spoiled already. Lol

We have a chocolate lab less than a year old, and being the wild pup he is, he got into stuff he shouldn't have. We noticed he started to feel sick and definitely wanted to take him into the emergency center. Before that, I called and the receptionist rudely answered the phone and I told her our situation and asked for some advice on what to do. She proceeded to speak down to me as if I was dumb and if I was bothering her. When it comes to pets and animals you are supposed to be compassionate, but that's the least of the problems that I had there. They then took an X-ray of our pup and we never even got to see or review them. They said they didn't see anything that could cause obstruction so they preferred to keep him over night and give him fluids. So before we left, they showed us an estimate with a high and low amount and that you had to make a 75% deposit before we left him. The next day they called to have him be picked up, and when we saw the invoice it was mind blowing. $1100.00 just to keep the dog over night and give him fluids? I understand you are running a business but that's outrageous, but there was nothing we could do at that point. So we brought him home, and he was all doped up on medicine and could barely keep his eyes open. He was still clearly sick and a couple days later this all started happening again. Since I have a friend that works at another vet hospital, I contacted her. I told her the situation and she said that veterinary specialty center of Delaware is REDICULOUSY expensive. We took him to my friends vet and the vet came in and actually examined my pup. He was compassionate and took the time to figure out the issue. He said he didn't even want to take X-rays because he knew that our puppy needed stomach exploratory surgery to get the foreign bodied object out. They took him right away and thank gosh they did! He had an object causing an obstruction in his intestine and stomach also. They even showed us everything they took out. When they told us the price, I was so impressed! It was 1200.00 for surgery, bloodwork, fluids, a night stay, antibiotics and pain medicine. They were thorough and actually seemed like they loved animals. We took him to Middletown Veterinary Hospital and I will keep going there. It's crazy that for all that they did for our dog, it was the same amount as we paid for what they pretty much failed to do for us at VSD- since if it weren't for Middletown, our dog might not have even made it. It's such a shame that doctors that are caring for our special pets that are like our family/children seem to only care about one thing.. Money! Definitely not going there again, that's for sure!!

Every staff member I've interacted with has been incredibly warm and compassionate, as well as upfront by explaining exactly what is going on and what procedures are good options for your pet. The wait may be a little longer than most places but it is an emergency facility and the care absolutely outweighs the wait.

I have a young female German Shepherd with a history of chronic UTIs and potentially early kidney issues....I have been taking Myla to see Dr. Diroff for quite some time now and his care for Myla has been extraordinary. He has approached her health issues with care and professionalism and contemplation at every turn. He also listens to my input which is a welcome change from the typical vet visit. He respects his clients and owners and gives them his best at every visit under challenging conditions. The expense is well worth the level of care. The support staff from the techs to the administrative support staff are also exceptional at what they do. Just wish I had brought Myla here months ago. Thank you VSC!

If i could leave a negative star review for them I would. We took our dog which had an open cut under her eye to be treated. She was leading and obviously in pain. It took them one hour to admit her and then 7 hours later she still wasn't treated fully for her injury. Their excuse, we are busy. What kind of doctor leaves an animal untreated for that long. And it top of it we had to call them to find out about what is going on with our dog. One of the worst places I have ever seen. A small cut that would require one stich if at all would not take more than 30 minutes. I am so extremely upset at this place. Awefull!!! My advice is unless your animal requires life saving services go somewhere else. Your animal will not be well taken care of there!!!!!!

Cristalyn Hogue

I will never take my dog here again. They told me very little information on what was wrong with my dog and basically said the only way he would get better was to hospitalize him and if I couldn't do that then he should be put down. Knowing I couldnt afford to hospitalize him I took him home to see if things got worse the next day he was acting normal and started eating again.

Very bad service, ill tempered staff. Very expensive.

This is long overdue BUT WELL DESERVED. My sisters dog got out and was hit by a car over Thansgiving weekend(2016). Our regular vet, Governors Animal Hospital, highly recommended this place. This place and all those who took care of Diesel were ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! He had to have surgery to remove part of his lung and had a cranial and orbital fractures. Without this place, he would not be here today...and hes doing very well, Onery as ever! I just wish the one in Dover was 24 hours as well...he had to be moved with a chest tube in place, which is scary in itself. Definately hope to never have to visit again, but should another emergency happen...you guys are the first stop! THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts!!!

I live in Maryland but came here because gallbladder surgery was 1K less than my state! Dr. Roberts too wonderful care of my dog and also included other things while he was in surgery to save me money down the road. I highly recommend him as a doctor. My dog had his surgery in February and he's doing wonderful!

Stay away... have used in past and even recommended it but never again. Felt as if we were into euthanasia for my fur baby. No real exam done no options offered. Told most humane thing to do. And then wanted to place him in a box for pick up out back as he were trash. Had meeting with office manager and head of clinical to discuss our concerns only to find the treating vet out and out lied. The office manager basically brushed off my grief and guilt. The head vet scoffed at my saying I had since talked to vets who would have treated differently. Her response was something like easy to do when they weren't there ....well neither was she and she felt it fine to offer her opinion. I am posting this because I don't want anyone else to feel the guilt and regret we have over the past several days. There's always options if only a 2nd opinion. Wish I had been thinking clearly enough to do just that. I trusted them before this but never again.

Heather Nelson

Very nice and very caring staff.

I would not recommend this place. All they want to do is put your pet to sleep. They knew we didn't have the money to admit her and keep her overnight so instead they just wanted to euthanize her. Went to another vet and they gave our puppy in home treatment and my puppy is alive and well now. Thank god i didn't listen to them.

Very pleased with my dog's care over the weekend. The triage nurse, nurse that took her for blood work & Dr. Sorenson were pleasant, helpful, friendly & compassionate. I would not hesitate to take my pet here again should an emergency situation arise.

Last month I had to bring my Dog in for an emergency. Unfortunately I had to put her down after 2 days of treatment. I just want to sincerely thank the members of that Vet on how they handle the whole situation. They were compassionate and professional on how they treated my dog and me during her last moments. Also I was really grateful on how they provide by dog back with dignity. They were very accommodating during the whole trial. Thanks again for your help and expertise.

First of all I should mention that my husband was a practicing veterinarian for over 40 years (retired now) and I was the manager of the animal hospital for over 10 years. I am more than familiar with the operations of animal hospitals and what happens when we were to refer clients to emergency clinics. Never in my entire life have I heard of an emergency clinic turning someone away because "It's Christmas Eve and we don't have any surgeons here." It started out when her cat "Benny" ate a lot of things he shouldn't and he became blocked. We got him into his regular vet ASAP who took an X ray and said he needed surgery. But we'd have to take him to an emergency clinic for the surgery. The vet we normally use wasn't there and this was a "fill in vet". So he couldn't do the surgery. He recommended this one and I called from the waiting room of our vet to let them know we were on our way and to give whatever info they might need before we got there. I have a screen shot of the phone number, time, duration and date of my call. I called. I didn't hallucinate it. I didn't call the wrong number. I was told it was $135.00 for the consult, to bring the X ray, and she needed my daughters name, cats name, breed, age and what exactly the problem was. I explained he was blocked and needed surgery to clear the blockage. She then informed me it was a 2-3 hour wait at that point in time. We immediately headed over. I walked in to find my daughter beside herself because she was being told "There aren't any doctors to do surgery today. It's Christmas Eve." What?????? Oh, and it was our doctors fault for referring us there and he should have called himself. Which she repeated several times. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. NEVER have I ever heard of an emergency clinic that wouldn't do surgery because they didn't have a surgeon. First of all, my husband had preformed this type of surgery with me assisting more times than I care to remember. It just takes a knowledgable veterinarian who knows where the organs are to do it. Even if it were in the bowel, which makes it more difficult, a competent, licensed veterinarian should be able to do this without any problems. This was only in his abdomen. It was too big to pass into the bowel. I could not believe we were turned away on Christmas Eve by a so called "emergency" clinic. I can understand if he needed an MRI or a scope. Not every place has that. Yes, I would fully expect in that case to be referred to Penn. But I would certainly expect an emergency clinic to have a licensed veterinarian capable of performing surgeries such as intestinal blockages, urinary blockages, infected uteruses, and other surgeries regularly preformed by your regular veterinarian. This is the most ridiculous and infuriating thing I can remember ever happening regarding an emergency with an animal. And NEVER in all the time we were in business and someone was referred to our emergency clinic after hours or on holidays were we told they were turned away for a surgery. I've heard that surgery was done, but they had to pick their animal up in the morning and transport it to their regular vet because they were only open during hours that veterinarians were closed. That's reasonable. But this? It was a damn good thing he wasn't on deaths door and couldn't wait for surgery as we had to leave and find someplace else to go. All the while stressing an already sick and terrified cat out even more. When I moved to Delaware one of the first things I did was look up emergency clinics in case I needed to take my cats somewhere after hours. I saw the reviews for this one and figured this would be the place I'd take them. After this horrible experience I will be taking my pets to Keystone Veterinary Emergency on West Chester Pike in Haverstown, PA. I'm stunned.

Everyone at The Veterinary Specialty Center of Delaware was wonderful during the 9 months that my dog was treated there. She had 2 surgeries, many rounds of chemo and spent countless hours there. The kindness and compassion that everyone showed to us was truly remarkable. I would highly recommend them should you find the need for specialty or emergency service for your pet.

Annabelle Henry

Excellent care and the staff is very caring and very compassionate.

Awful experience. My cat was admitted and when I went to visit, they bought him out with his bottom soaking wet. In addition to the illness he was admitted for, he ended up getting pneumonia. I asked why was his bottom soaking wet and the technician said he likes to sit in the litter box. I then asked why was the litter box not clean and she looked at me with a big question mark on her face??? She really didn't get it. The technician wrapped a small blanket around the kittie who was dripping soaking wet and presented him in that condition for the owner to visit without even attempting to clean him or dry him. How humiliating, not to mention how outrageously neglecting in the care of a sick kittie requiring hospitalization. Wouldn't common sense tell you to at least dry kittie before bringing him to the owner for visitation. Incredibly the technician didn't see anything wrong with the kittie being soaking wet, shivering, and very upset that he was not clean and dry. And just imagine what goes on not in front of the owner. Disgusting!

A lot of the people who have reviewed don't seem to understand this is a 24 hour veterinary hospital. Triage means they take the most critical (about the die) patients first. If there is a critical patient in the facility you may wait a while. Wouldn't you want upfront care if your pet was in critical condition or would you want "Sorry, Sally has been waiting 45 minutes so your dying pet has to wait". No. With that being said, VSC was amazing. We checked in easily, were taken back in 10 minutes and triaged. We waited about 30 minutes to 1 hour once we were taken back but they communicated that they had a critical patient. We eventually got seen by a doctor in a reasonable time frame and they recommended hospitalization. They gave us an estimate upfront which they ended up being under their low estimate which was appreciated. He was only hospitalized for 1 day instead of the 2-3. They did a lot of tests and we're still waiting for results. The staff called us three times in the 24 hours he was there to give an update on Ardyn, go over fees and let us know what they were doing and how he was doing. When discharged we waited a while but we had such phenomenal service and attention and didn't feel rushed at all with our questions once they finally came out to talk to us. We were also told about turn around times for tests, follow ups and told to call with ANY questions. They made us feel very welcome to call. The biggest gripe I see people have is not understanding that this is a specialty center, one of the best places in Delaware to take your pet. You pay for that price. You pay for those specialists and that level of care. I didn't like the 2,400 dollar price tag for all the tests but he was my baby and I'm VERY satisfied with the care and love VSC gave Ardyn. I hope we never have to come again for a sick visit but I know if he does need to come he'll be in great hands. Thank you VSC. :)

As a small animal veterinarian practicing for over 30 years in the area, I can think of no higher recommendation than to say I trust VSCD with my own pets. Dr McCarthy et al saved my recently adopted dog, Mick, several times over the course of a whirlwind week. I cannot thank them enough.

Dt Bowersox explained everything about our Lulu's eye problems to us. Caring. Techs were kind and friendly to us and our Lulu. Total staff seems to respect each other and have good relationships. My vet is very partial to this vet center. I can see why!

Although the rest of the staff is exceptional Dr. Bowersox is not. He mis-handled my dog last week on a follow-up exam, and failed to correctly treat him. At the re-check, Bowersox tells me my dogs eye ulcer healed, he tells me i did a good job, his eyes look really good (that's do to round the clock care from myself and my family) but his eyes are not quite ready for surgery, you need maintance treatment for the next 3 months, he then reaches his hand out for my dogs lead, I though he wanted him closer to him to put drops in, but the next thing I know he is no longer standing in front of the rear door of the examining room, he is running down the hall with my dog, who obviously thinks its mom at the other end of the lead. I yell, and I mean yell, hey don't do that, this is not a good idea to do, and what does Bowersox do, he does not stop, he does not even stop at the end of the hall, there is a door at the end of the hall, you can see the kennels right in front of the door, he makes my Caleb go through the door full speed ahead and Caleb smashed his face into the side of the kennel and yelps. So I say what the heck did you do that for, don't harm him, he says I always put my patients through an obstacle course to see how blind they are. Within an hour Caleb is now squinting, I thought it might be from the floresant gel they put it, but through the night, its getting worse, in the morning, Caleb won't open the eye he smashed into, I take him back, this time to the New Castle location and see another eye doctor who tells me Caleb has a new cut on his eye, but different location from his healed ulcer. The she says Caleb has fluid in his cornea, that has to be removed in order to have surgery, didn't Bowersox prescribe sodium chloride and I say no, you mean Caleb's eyes could be in better shape if he prescribed the proper treatment months ago, why didn't he, then, oh I got it, he wants more follow-up visits at $200.00 a pop to milk as much money possible from me and others at the expense of his patients. I finally got Bowersox on the phone, and he tells me I can do anything I want when examining my patients, and one of them is the obstacle course, you have no say in how I treat my patients, oh really idiot, its MY DOG, ITS MY MONEY PAYING YOU, YOU DID NOT HAVE PERMISSION TO TAKE MY DOG OUT OF THE EXAMINING ROOM, I WOULD NEVER HAVE GIVEN YOU PERMISSION TO PUT MY DOG THROUGH A OBSTACLE COURSE YOU MORON. YOU HAD NO RIGHT WHATSOEVER TO PUT MY DOG IN HARMS WAY. What else are you doing, not doing to your patients, you obviously don't care for their welfare or you would have properly treated my Caleb months ago. You have harmed my precious baby, and now you are just leaving him in mid-treatment after i spent thousands of dollars at this center, Bowersox will not fix what he did to my dog and has forbidden his other doctors from treating my Caleb. He does not want his other Doctors to know just has incompetent he is, and what he did to my Caleb. SHAME ON YOU BOWERSOX, YOU MONEY HUNGRY INCOMPETENT FOOL, YOUR SUPPOSE TO HEAL NOT HARM

My dog ate feminine products. It got caught in his intestines. They treated him with care. Got it out with surgery and offered financing to help us save him. Friendly staff!

Brought my dog to see Dr.Bowersox (ophthalmologist) as a referral from my vet for possible glaucoma. Dr. Bowersox, the techs and front desk staff were very nice accommodating and helpful. They provided me with optional care and answered all of my questions. I hope to follow up in the future. Thank you VSCD!

My service animal Ava Reece needed a orthopedic specialist for her leg, and the Dr cared so much that I was a disabled veteran he offered me our appointment for free. thanks a million times over disabled veterans don't make much money and he showed me that this hospital really cares about our service animals' health.

This "emergency vet" first of has appts from 9-3. That's it. No matter how sick your animal is. You are expected to be ok with footing a $210 consult bill just for walking through the door, however...I don't know what you're actually paying for. There is no on call doc. They confirmed the appt for my sick cat the day before--great. Thanks for the reminder. Less than three hours before the appt, I get a call saying "we need to cancel your visit" Uh. What? Sick cat--enormous lymph nodes. You've already made my cat wait TEN DAYS for an appt at an "emergency" vet. Now you're cancelling and there is no on call doc to still see my cat?! What the hell is the $210 that I would be paying for? To have a sick cat wait for the first appt within banker's hours and have no emergency back up?! No. I will not be throwing my money away at this clinic. I will take all my animals somewhere who will actually used the sky-high consult fee to provide some sort of higher than routine care. Go pound sand.

I can’t say enough good things about the oncology service and the staff at VSCD. My cat Punky sadly just lost her battle with lymphoma, but thanks to great care by Dr. Gaeta, Margie and Deanna she lived a year and a half after diagnosis instead of the predicted 2-3 weeks. She might have survived longer had we not had to stop her medication briefly for an unrelated problem. I wasn’t sure what to expect but they gave me numerous options - different treatments that fit my budget and schedule. For most of her time as a patient there, my cat didn’t receive any injections, just pills at home. Her quality of life was also quite stable, she was still able to enjoy her favorite activities until the very end (although she did tire quicker) so we both enjoyed the extra time together. I never felt rushed and the staff were very caring towards Punky, who was not the best patient, and her nervous cat mom. They also treated her and I with great caring and respect at the end, something that was very comforting to me. Hopefully, you never have to see them, but if your cat is diagnosed with cancer, I definitely recommend Dr. Gaeta and the care at VSCD.

Impossible to schedule an ultrasound appointment, backed up for a month+. They do not have a cancellation list. Forces you to go out of state to find somewhere else that can do an ultrasound if it is needed sooner, which i would imagine is the case for most ppl. Disappointed. Now have to drive an hour + to get this done.

This place is fantastic. Not only did they keep me informed about everything that was going on with my dog's surgery, they were always willing to answer any questions, and I was pleasantly surprised to find the final payment came in BELOW their low end estimate - they actually refunded money back to my Credit Card! Special thanks to Dr. Gregory in Emergency and Dr. Yeh in Ophthalmology for taking such good care of our girl. I had great interactions with EVERY member of the staff I spoke with, they are all really caring and helpful. 100% Recommend!!

Avoid this place at all costs. We took our dog in to have a tumor removed, and they gave us an estimate with the HIGH end of ~$5,000. That was supposed to cover the surgery PLUS 2 days of recovery. When we got there to pick the dog up the day after the surgery like we were supposed to, the doctor told us that it took "a little longer than expected" and that our bill was already over the HIGH estimate. Then he told us that he couldn't release her until she was eating so that she could take pain meds orally. We explained how she does much better at home, and that we would like to bring her home to see if she would eat for us there. He stated that sometimes he allows people to take their pets home for a trial and then if it doesn't work, they can bring them back. We stated we'd like to do that but he pretty much ignored us. My wife went down the next day, and he gave her the same line... that she _couldn't_ take the dog home because she wasn't eating. I should also point out that every time we tried getting the dog to eat while we were there, they had just given her oxy, so her appetite would have been lower anyway. My wife tried going back down on the THIRD day, and he still said she couldn't bring the dog home, and that, oh.. by the way.. your bill is now ~$7800. It wasn't until I called and stated that I was coming down the next day, and I was leaving with my dog that he agreed. He had stated that he didn't want to release the dog, but that he would. We also found out that he was going on vacation that day, so who knows if someone else would have released the dog to us without his approval while he was gone for the next week. Also.. and this is a real kick in the pants. During one of the trips when my wife went down to try getting the dog, they needed meds for her... AND THEY SENT MY WIFE TO GET THEM! Serioiusly? They wanted us to bring our dog back to them so they could see her after surgery. I'll never step foot in this place again.

I'm a veterinarian and my sister recently had a tragic death of their young dog on Thanksgiving day. They were at a rest stop in traveling to family and she she heard a noise and came loose from her harness. They tried to retrieve her but she was so scared she jumped a barrier and was hit by a car in front of them and their children. They were able to make it to VSEC with her and I spoke to everyone from the receptionist to the critical care specialist while they tried to save her. Unfortunately, her injuries were too severe to save her. However, the compassion, professionalism, and effort from the entire staff was something I'm very grateful for. From a veterinarians prospective, they did everything they could to save her. I could feel the compassion and genuine hope from everyone on staff. Her family is devastated and feel terrible, but the kindness they were fortunate enough stumble onto will not be forgotten. I can't think how stressful and emotionally exhausting that job can be - but they haven't lost their compassion for others. I never got the names of the people I spoke to, but I want them to know they are doing a wonderful job.

I have had several dogs treated at VSC over the years --- two of my dogs needed specialized ophthalmology care, another needed cardiac care and one, sadly, had to have emergency surgery. Every experience, even the hardest, has been made easier by the caring staff and the wonderful doctors. Everyone there is so nice and truly cares about their patients. Excellent all around. I would not hesitate to return. We are fortunate to have such high quality care available here in Delaware!

Very nice place! My cat, Mark, is a cardiac patient with Dr. King. Dr. King and the tech who assists her (can't recall his name) are both very kind and nice. It is a nice facility and I appreciate it being there for us. We have been going VSCD for about 3 years now. I would highly recommend this center and Dr. King to anyone need a veterinary cardiologist.

Drove 1hr to see a surgeon about my dog waited two hours after calling and saying what time I would be there. Then told them we had the x-rays sent over before we got there and told them they were sent . They told us they weren't sent after two hours of waiting and a hour drive to see a surgeon about my dogs leg then was told they couldn't do anything because there isn't a surgeon on after 5 and it's a specialty emergency center

We had an emergency with one of our cats over the weekend and we were hoping that things would either get better or be able to wait until Monday so we could call our normal vet for an appointment. On Sunday morning we knew our cat needed help and needed to be seen that day. The staff at the Veterinary Specialty Center of Delaware were terrific – from our first panicked phone call until we checked out, we were treated wonderfully and with patience and respect. When we arrived, we were seen by a triage nurse who took vitals and got the history of our cat. She explained everything she was doing and was very caring and kind towards our furball. She explained that the doctor would be in afterwards and within 15 minutes the doctor arrived. She reviewed the situation and history of our cat’s health and then based on what she had observed told us what she thought the issue might be. She explained that she needed to take our cat back to the exam room and told us everything that she was going to do. When she returned, she reviewed everything with us, and her diagnosis was spot on. She told us she had some samples that she wanted to send out to a lab and gave us the choice of whether to do it. She explained the medication our cat would need for the next week including the dosage, instructions for administering it and answered all our questions. She explained that it would be awhile while she got the medication ordered and got us ready for checkout and told us in the meantime, we could let our cat out of the carrier to explore the room and relax. The longest part of the visit was waiting for the medication and checkout, but our cat was so exhausted that she stayed in her carrier and slept so it didn’t really matter. Checkout went smoothly and we felt the cost was much less than we were expecting it to be. I don’t think that the prices here are outrageous – this is a full-service hospital with staff on hand to perform lab work, procedures and basically handle any emergency and they were open 24 hours over the weekend. I think the price was very reasonable and I was happy that we took our cat there and trusted them with her care. I would recommend this center to anyone needing emergency care for their pet – they were wonderful to deal with. I can’t thank them enough.

We did not have a good experience with the oncologist here. We love our dog a lot, and wanted to explore the options for her aggressive mast cell cancer. It really bothered us that the oncologist, Dr. Gaeta, acted as though the only reasons one might choose not put their dog through unproven and aggressive treatments for cancer is (A) lack of financial means, or (B) lack of concern for the animal. Our bigger concern was our dog's remaining quality of life, and the protocol she described did not meet that. My wife left in tears and I wasn't doing much better. This was a difficult emotional time, and I don't believe it was handled well by the staff at VSCD. When we got back to the car, we commented that all the people and animals we saw there looked miserable and decided we made the right choice to focus on palliative care with our normal vet. (I should mention, as an aside, that Dr. Gaeta's attitude towards our normal vet seemed condescending and it made a pretty awful impression). Six months later, our dog is still happy and healthy, and while we know the cancer is likely to kill her, we're glad that we chose for her remaining time to be pleasant rather than a regiment of chemotherapy, radiation (including being boarded away from home a huge fraction of the time), checkups, and sadness. I recognize there's no good answer in these situations, but maybe focus more on bedside manner and recognize that these decisions are very personal and difficult. A little compassion goes a long way, and we didn't feel we got any here.

I am so grateful for this amazing vet hospital. Last year my boxer ingested a piece of a broken toy from her day care center. VSCD saved my kona Bear. The staff and doctors are amazing. At one point, I was taking kona to her regular vet once a week and then they recommended us to VSCD to see the gastrointestinal specialist. He saved us. I was so worried about her. I can’t thank you enough for how amazing your practice is. Kona was sick for 7 months. She is finally feeling like her self. Thank you all so much.

There are not enough words to express the appreciation that I have for the vets and staff at the Veterinary Specialty Center. Over the past 10 years we have had 3 dogs require the excellent care of Dr. Diroff and most recently Dr. Bowersox. They are two of the most incredibly caring vets I have ever met. I would rather take my dogs to the specialty center than to the regular vet. Is it expensive? You pay for the fantastic care that you receive. My dogs could not have been in better hands. My family is extremely grateful for their work.

Derek Burrows

Everyone was pleasant and helpful from the 0545 am phone call in, to the final checkout. Went in very worried about our older female cat with unknown injury, and the staff, and Dr. were very helpful, especially seeing as though we got there early in the morning. Only complaint was that it took almost 3 hours, but when you're dealing with friendly, thorough people, it's hard to complain about that.

I had to put my dog to sleep on Thanksgiving. I was beside myself as to whether it was right thing to do at the time. Dr. Laura and the staff we extremely kind and supportive to whatever choice I made. They gave me information and time to make what I feel was the right choice. This place went beyond anything required and I am greatful.

I brought my little dog in on Frrliday morning after she was violently attacked. OMG YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME!! The cared and took care of her as if she was their own. They kept her for the day so that the surgeon could assess her. This is the 2nd time I have had to use them. The 1st was 3 year prior when she was in labor for 3 hours. Long and short, dont teust anyone else BUT this place. The staff genuinely cares. They are patient and feel your pain. Love ya. ChiChi the Chihuahua's mom

I brought my dog in after a cluster seizure in January. We arrived at around 0230 and, as I carried her in the front door, I was directed to the back. Once they took her from me, I was standing there, waiting for direction that arrived in the form of a very rude person who acted like I had barged into a restricted area. Unfortunately, she turned out to be the doctor. Aside from an incredibly unpleasant experience with the doctor on night shift, their billing policy is constructed in such a way as to extract every possible cent from owners. I feel, having been to other ERs several times in the past year, that my assessment of their ridiculous billing policy is completely fair, but even if it weren't, there's no excuse for doctors who are rude.

If I could post no stars I would. I brought my dog in for stitches. The nurse that put us in the room was kind. She took her vitals but didn’t even look at her wound! Hours after patiently waiting 2 employees separately came in (after 2 & 2.5 hours waiting) they each said “the doctor is on her way in” & “you’re up next.” 2 more hours later many pets had come and gone, we listened to staff going in and out of patient rooms. So 4 hours in total we left. There was no apology from the employee that saw us leave, or even an attempt to salvage our business. I am an Emergency Room nurse, I know how they work and that patients get seen in order of acuity or how sick they are, I am more than understanding of that- but 4 hours and still nothing- that was a little obsurd, especially when we were watching pets that arrived after us leave. I’ll wrap it myself and take her to our vet in the morning. Just because my dogs wound wasn’t visible (it was under her arm) and she didn’t appear to be in distress doesn’t mean we should’ve kept getting put off. It was very clear we had been forgotten. My poor dog was in more stress those 4 hours panting and waiting than she was when we made the decision to go to the ER vet. So disappointed.

I brought my dog in to the center on a Friday night for a dog bite and they were phenomenal from start to finish. The front desk girls were pleasant and helpful, the check in process was quick and my dog was seen in a reasonable time. Even though the bite was not serious my dog needed staples, medication, as well as take home medication. Going off of what I have paid in the past for just a routine visit to my regular vet I was expecting a bill well over $500 but to my surprise the bill didn't even exceed $300 and they even offered to let my dog stay the night at no extra charge. I was so relieved that I was able to give my dog the proper treatment he needed without feeling stressed about the financial burden. Thank you so much for making me and my dog feel at ease during such a stressful time.

We've received excellent service by the Drs & vet techs both times we've been there for emergencies. When we first moved to the area, I would have been thrilled if they accepted 'regular' vet appointments (shots, wellness exams, etc), but they're a specialty center so I had to keep looking, lol. But, having VSC here means we don't have to drive to Penn Vet for all of our emergencies - and that is a true blessing. **Review updated: Our dog was diagnosed with lymphoma 8/2017 and has been a patient of VSC ever since. She completed one six month round of chemo 1/2018, stayed in remission until 7/2018, and is wrapping up her second round. The care provided to both Lu and to us, as her parents, has been phenomenal. The entire staff is friendly, helpful, caring... I could go on and on! When a previous pup had cancer I drove him to Penn every week, and the care there was also incredible. But, at VSC I don't have to drive 45+ minutes, I spend more time talking to the actual oncologist (who trained with our oncologist at Penn!), and almost the entire staff greets our gal by name with a quick pet - which in the doggie kingdom makes her a happy, well loved girl.

Our veterinarian sent us there after our 8 year old dog "crashed" from what turned out to be severe internal bleeding from a cancerous tumor. We found the staff and doctors there to be truly amazing in every sense. Molly received multiple blood transfusions to keep her alive and a miraculous surgery in which they were able to remove the tumor along with a kidney and adrenal glands. We believe Dr Groman when he told us it was one of the top 4 saves he's seen in his 22 years in practice. Molly was then in ICU for 4 days where they allowed us to visit and stay awhile. The variety of veterinary specialists there and their extraordinary capabilities make VCS unique in this area. What's most amazing to us is that Molly is 110%, runs around like a puppy. Yes, it was a large bill and several pages long but you get what you pay for in life and we like what we got. She still has cancer and no one knows what the future holds but we're hopeful and thankful!

Just called them at 5:40 p.m. on 06/11/18 - if you have never been here before - they will give you nothing other than to come in and be seen - walk in the door - $135. Everything else is extra. The woman on the phone was unsympathetic, curt, and careless. HORRIBLE phone person for the emergency side that answered the phone. Person in distress on the phone about their pet, she could have a little bit more empathy.

I had my dog in for a ruptured Cranial Cruciate Ligament AKA ACL. He had surgery about a week ago. I have nothing but good things to say. Dr. Scott Roberts did a fantastic job of explaining the surgery beforehand, and my dog is recovering fantastically. He is ahead of the curve. With the medications he received, he has shown no signs of pain, has kept his energy, and appears to be on track for a fine recovery. The thing that really stands out is if you have any questions or concerns, they will help you 24/7. The staff is incredible. They are completely compassionate and helpful. I am grateful to have found them and recommend them implicitly. Regarding negative reviews regarding price, I feel that the cost of my treatment was fair and reasonable and my charge actually came in at the low end of the estimate. If you're like me and would accept nothing but the best for my dog, "budget care" has no meaning.

Susan Graves

The doctors and staff are amazing and wonderful. I have had 2 pets that needed critical care over the years, and this place was the place to go. YES, vet care is expensive. They will talk you through the care and then offer you three options (usually) -- an all-out do-anything care (with a total price, a medium-sized price with less aggressive care, and then the "Bare-bones / keep your pet alive price. They are always very clear on the cost and what they expect you to pay. Unfortunately, I know most people don't want to pay 1) because their pet gets better and they aren't afraid anymore, or 2) because their pet dies. PAY YOUR BILLS, PEOPLE! These docs have a difficult job, and they handle it beautifully with love and care.

Anja Nohe

went in with my cat, because he was in all hunched up. They took x ray of him and told me he needed an ultrasound. His stomach was pushed to the side and liver was larger and looked unusual. He also had poop in him but the vet told me he was not constipated. Drove him next day for ultrasound to other clinic. The vet there looked at x ray and said cat is constipated. Ultrasound came back normal. Also vet said the vet at the emergency clinic that took the x ray did not know the difference between a cat and a dog anatomy and that is why they thought the stomach was pushed to side and unusual. Please have your vets retrained on reading x rays.

The people there are so nice. Our pup was attacked and needed stitches, Dr. Severino (spelling?) was great and sutured him perfectly. Very nice facility as well. You may have to wait a little bit because they deal with some serious cases, but rest assured your animal will be very well taken care of. I will always take my dog here during an emergency.

As an owner of multiple senior dogs, My various experiences with contacts at VSC over the past five years vary from acute emergency care to long term care involving chronic conditions. I lived in NJ most of my life and can sincrrely say that I've never before encountered as professional and considerate staff members as I've experienced here at the VSC in New Castle.

Danielle Forstenhausler

First off, I will say that my cat had surgery here which went perfectly and they called me as soon as she was out to let me know she was ok. The final bill was also lower than the estimate they gave me. However, this place does not tell you ANYTHING about what is going on and has some serious communication issues, which makes an already stressful situation so much worse. I can't tell you whether the staff is gentle and careful when handling your pet because they separated us and I never saw them with her; they ask you questions in one room while someone else does who knows what with your pet in a different room and they tell you nothing. My cat Cersei was lethargic, not eating, and then stopped drinking water so I took her to my normal vet who did x-rays and said there was an obstruction in her intestine and she needed surgery. She sent me straight to this place and called ahead to tell them exactly what was going on. Well when I got there, no one knew what was going on. I had to tell the front desk people everything that my vet had already called and told them. They finally brought a vet up and we went to an exam room. I had all of Cersei's past medical records plus the assessment from my vet and copies of the x-rays. Plus I just told tell them everything AGAIN at the front desk. I gave Cersei's records to the vet in the exam room and still had to waste time re-answering the same questions they had asked at the check-in and that were already answered in the records that she read!! Then she took my cat and disappeared without telling me what was going on. She eventually came back, without my cat, and told me what I already knew, that Cersei needed surgery, and gave me an application for Care Credit. Left again and I sat there for 20 minutes, again with no information on my cat or what they were doing with her. It was especailly nice to sit there worrying while listening to the staff chat and laugh in the hallway. Glad they were enjoying their afternoon while I was worried sick and being told nothing. Finally got an update that Cersei was being prepped for surgery and was told to go to the front desk to check out. Front desk had none of the information needed to check me out. After another 20 minutes a woman finally came from the back with an estimate for me to sign. All in all it was a 2 hour experience due solely to the staff being incapable of getting themselves together. Luckily the surgeon at least must have been competent and everything went well. I was called the next morning to schedule a time to pick up my cat. When I got there at the scheduled time, what do you know!! Nothing was ready. Finally after an hour I had my cat back and she was so happy to leave. I honestly have no idea why my vet reccomended this place and not another emergency center, but god forbid my pets ever need emergency care again, I'll be going somewhere else, where the staff actually communicates with each other and their clients.

My dog vomited blood the other night, and we decided to take him to the local 24/7 vet clinic, VCA, to be checked out. When we arrived, we read the note on the door that informed us they were no longer 24/7 and would be opening in the morning, and they listed the Veterinary Specialty Center on the sheet as an alternative. We drove over, were seen right away, and everyone was super friendly. The nurse triaged him and was very gentle with him. The doctor, Danika Sorenson, took the time to explain what was going on, what our options were, and what we could do. She answered all our questions, and was very easy to talk to about his issues. The facility was very clean, our dog was treated very well, and I'm happy to report that Spartacus has a clean bill of health.

I love the visit i got today. I brought my 2 month old puppy in for an emergency visit and was extremely nervous about the whole visit and making sure my puppy was ok. The staff are nice, very educated, and calmed me down when i was nervous. Very detailed about everything asked about everything to ensure my puppy is doing everything normal. Fortunately he's ok. Im happy that he's ok and everything turned out well. I highly recommend coming to this location for anything and everything for your pets needs.

Dr. Diroff and Dr. Knox both provided exceptional care to my dog. I was treated kindly and shown much compassion by all veterinarians (including emergency staff) nurses and receptionists. Thank you for your expert care!

Our vet referred me to VSCD after my dog’s blood tests indicated a liver problem. I was able to get an appointment the same day I made the initial contact. The receptionist was very helpful and told me Dr. Walsh was the internal medicine specialist who would examine my dog. He conducted a very thorough interview, and said there was a growth that might be malignant. He seemed as shaken and sad as I was. It was the little things Dr. Walsh did that meant so much to me. Mae was wearing a Disney leash with images of Goofy; he immediately noticed it and had a good laugh! Whenever he had to grasp her to check on the size of the growth it seemed that he was hugging her. Dr. Walsh’s glass is truly half-full. He referred us to Dr. Gaetta, the oncologist. She too was very caring, but honest and could only offer palliative care for Mae. The chemo drugs greatly reduced the size of the tumors, but unfortunately serious side effects necessitated cessation of the Rx. Dr. Walsh resumed responsibility for Mae’s care. Complications resulted in her being admitted to the ER where she remained for several days. He phoned each morning with updates. I visited her twice a day, and Dr. Walsh would speak with me personally. The evening visits were after 6:00, and we would joke that he lived at the hospital! I will always be grateful to Dr. Walsh for the loving care he gave Mae and especially for letting her come home to die. He called after he learned of her death to offer his condolences. He, along with all the members of the VSCD staff are my heroes. Finally, it was expensive but I would insist on the best care for my pets, which Mae received.

Front desk clerks should have a basic clue about animals or at least ask someone in their office if they don’t know not just say sorry I don’t know.

We took our Yorkie (Sadie) to our vet because she was not walking right and yelping in pain, they had to send us to Delmarva Animal Emergency Center for xrays, we thought she had just dislocated something but in fact she broke her pelvic bone. They referred us to VSCD and we took her right it (this is an hour or so away) When we got there we were greeted by very friendly staff and they took her right in. I don't remember the name of the lady that first looked at her but she was very kind and took good care of our baby. They quickly determined the problem and came up with a plan to help her. They quickly brought us an estimate ( yes it was expensive, but I felt reasonable for what they needed to do. She had her surgery the next day (Fri)and we were able to bring her home Sunday morning. They kept us informed through the whole process, Dr. Arthur Jankowski even called himself a number of times, once to ask if he could do another test that was $800.00 but would help prepare him for the surgery better. I agreed because I wanted him to be able to do all he could for her. My bill was within the range I was told it would be, he even told me he was discounting it to keep it within the range. I am so grateful for this place and would recommend it to any one with an animal emergency. Our baby is healing great!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!

Dr. Pell and the staff were very professional and very helpful to our dog and us. We feel care was excellent and they were kind, empathetic, understanding and explained things very well. We hope not to need to come back, but should we need an emergency vet we know where we will go.

I gave it two stars because the cardiologist my dog was supposed to see might be great- Unfortunately, I don't know. After driving from Lewes De to this place, after filling out the paperwork and waiting about 30 minutes an office staff tells me that the cardiologist isn't "in". Initially they insisted they called me, however, they called the wto g number. So, at least four hours of wasted traveling time because of their office error renders me irritated.

K Hodgson

We brought our dog in 11/5/2017. We waited almost two hours to even be seen. We were at this facility for a total of 4 hours! All they did was a focal ultrasound noting our dog had Pyometra. Estimating the cost of the surgery to be between $3400-5600. This seemed absolutely outrageous! After they left the room to get antibiotics and return our dog from the exam room, which took an hour and a half we called other Veterinarian hospitals for quotes on the same surgery. Not only was the wait incredibly long, the service was terrible and we felt compassion was lacking on top of the outrageous prices. We will not recommend this place or ever return. Thankfully Harford Emergency Veterinarian Services was able to perform the surgery for $1800! The staff is super friendly, not in and out, and we felt incredibly comfortable leaving our dogs health in their hands.
