We moved to the bay area in the fall and had one cat. During the fall we adopted another kitten and yesterday when I found worms in her stool I said to my self it was time to go see a vet and get her all kitten vaccines. I found this hospital and read their reviews. I liked what I read, and also how close to our place it was. I called, scheduled an appointment for the same day. We filled all the paperwork, didn't wait too long. All the staff was very nice and kind to me and my kitty Ashby. Everybody adored her and did all their best to help her and me out. Soon we will be coming back for boosters and for introducing them our older cat Bobby. Thanks for your work! I appreciate it.

I can’t express how amazing the staff is here. I took my cat there for years and they treated her like their own. They were also there by my side when I had to make the hard decision to let my cat go. They even sent me a really lovely card a few weeks after she passed. Yeah the prices were a bit high but it’s the bay area.. nothing is cheap here and I didn’t mind spending a few extra dollars because I knew my pet was being treated like family. They’re worth every penny.

Please don’t go here unless you want to be ripped off!! Note: I was seen in January of 2018, so I am writing this review a year after. My dog was limping so I made an appointment to this vet based on the positive reviews here and on Yelp. Big mistake. The wait was ridiculously long, despite being on time for our appointment, yet the actual time the vet spent with my pup was less than 10 minutes. She said she was not be able to feel his knee dislocate, but she still “diagnosed” him with luxating patella. Then, she and the vet tech pushed for x-rays, a blood panel, and other tests without explaining why. I had to ask why we needed a blood panel when I came to get seen for his knee, and their reasoning was “to see how he’s doing in general.” What? This place doesn’t give you a solid treatment plan; they just try to push for as many diagnostics as possible to squeeze money out of you without telling you why. Lo and behold, I went to another vet yesterday and was told that my dog didn’t have luxating patella after all, despite going an entire year thinking he had this condition and doing nothing about it because the vet at UVH said it’s not a big deal and he wouldn’t need surgery. Well, he actually needs glucosamine supplements, and I wish I knew that beforehand so I could address his *real* issue. Also, this place is ridiculously expensive. A heartworm test, check up, and some meds ran to about $350. If you’re looking for wellness/preventative care for your dog, get Fuzzy instead. A year membership is around $400 but covers ALL shots, heartworm tests, access to messaging a vet, 2 check ups, and any necessary medicine mailed right to you. I’m furious I spent so much money here instead of just going straight to Fuzzy. I feel scammed. Giving 2 stars, though, because the place is very clean and nice. Also, I’m not some Fuzzy shill or someone who complains a lot. Check my reviews— I usually give positive ones but this experience just left me furious, even a year later.

We had a positive first experience with University Veterinary Hospital! We called in looking for more information and they happened to have availability for that same day for an intro appointment with our dog, Ruby. Our vet tech and vet listened intently to our worries about our dog's problems and addressed them in a way that felt comfortable to us. The one reason that I did not rate 5 stars is that I felt the vet tech and vet were not as comfortable and effective with getting Ruby warmed up to them as I have experienced with past vets and vet techs. They were very gentle and nice to Ruby, of course, but I think that there could be some improvement here. Thank you!

I recommend University Vet to everyone! The doctors and vet techs are friendly and stay on top of the latest treatments. They genuinely care about their patients. I recently met a dog owner at the dog park. His dog was had been having constant skin allergies and issues since a puppy. He'd been to three or four different vets and none of them were helping. I told the owner to go to Dr. Mattu and that he'd find out what is wrong. Sure enough, two weeks later when I saw the owner at the park again, he had went to Dr. Mattu and his dog's skin was the best it had ever been and his dog could sleep through the night without scratching.

Honestly, after all the gouging I got from Cheshire Cat Clinic on their prices, and the reasonable prices here, that is only one reason why I love this clinic. Their new building is really nice and clean, and they are very on top of your pet's health. They send out reminders, and they have been very kind in working with me financially when I was unemployed. They really care about pets, and the pet's owners. My cat is a senior, and she is very touchy and HATES the vet... the last time I was there, my poor kitty was so stressed, she peed all over the place, and the techs were so nice to her and to me, brought me paper towels, etc.... even the vet who got a good swipe from my crotchety old gal was still in good spirits, and jokingly called my kitty a "short fuse" kitty, with a smile and a chuckle, even though the poor woman was bleeding a bit. I can't recommend this place any higher, I really feel taken care of here.

University Vet has boarded cats for me twice, and on both occasions I was very pleased with their service from start to finish. We have one cat in particular who is very difficult -- he was abused by a previous owner and can be extremely aggressive -- and they had no problems at all with him and he came home happy. To be honest, I was stunned. Add to that they are polite and efficient and the rates are reasonable. We will definitely use them again and I would recommend them to anyone for veterinary care.

Dr. Mutta was nice and seemed very knowledgeable, but I couldn't help but feel like our time with him was rushed. I also felt like they were very quick to prescribe the most expensive treatment options, and didn't really talk about alternatives. I'm a new dog owner though and I'm not an expert, so take that for what it's worth. The technician, Darlene, was very nice as well.

I love this vet. I brought my cat here when he had an abscess, and the vet and assistants knew immediately what it was, and handled him with gentleness and good humor. (The good humor part was when the abscess leaked all over the place without having to be lanced, and it was gross and also funny.) I was able to ask all the questions I needed to and felt very comfortable about the care, and was given a choice between more and less expensive treatments -- at no time was I pushed into paying more than I was comfortable doing. I then brought my dog for a checkup, and she is a nervous little terrier who didn't like any of the process. They were gentle and kind and she was out of there swiftly, and has been like a new dog ever since (they finally got rid of her fleas). It turned out that the first vet I had brought her to, two years ago when we got her, had told us some fibs, which University Vet corrected. Again, this vet was cheaper -- we didn't have to do blood tests before getting the prescription for flea medicine. Finally, I have to single out and commend the front desk simply for being friendly, professional, and helpful. I wish she worked for my actual doctor rather than my vet, because this is how health care is supposed to be. Also, the waiting room has cookies. FOR PEOPLE. I mean obviously they have treats for dogs. BUT THEY ALSO HAVE TREATS FOR HUMANS.

Finding a good vet is so difficult. I'm used to having to wait a long time in the waiting room, and then being rushed through the exam. That's not the case here! Everyone was very friendly, and when I arrived with my cat, there were dogs in the waiting room, so they sent me right into an exam room. That was a relief. Between the vet techs and Dr. Mattu, they spent a good 45 minutes addressing all my questions and concerns, and then provided me with a list of suggested follow up procedures, with clear pricing, and then let me decide if and when I wanted to proceed with any of them. Very friendly and competent. I live in Oakland, but it's worth the few extra minutes drive to go here. I'm relieved to have found a vet I trust.

If you are a low-income client you can also request a $25 voucher from the shelter to have a spay/neuter surgery at the hospital, which is awesome.

We saw Dr. Fosbender and James and they were very friendly and my pup loved them. They were really good with my pup - were gentle with her, gave her treats to keep her distracted, etc. Also, I really appreciated that they didn't push a lot of tests, procedures, and prescriptions on us. Instead they prioritized what they thought would be best for my pup and let me pick which things I felt comfortable with. Overall, I'd highly recommend University Vet Hospital.

They are NOT annoyingly trying to sell you all kinds of products, they do give you options of services they offer and they give you tips on how to keep your baby at optimal health. Dr Mattu is very knowledgable and explains everything in detail if you want him to and he answers all of your questions. Kitty got sick one day, I called in and got an immediate appointment. I'm confident in the medical attention my kitty gets from the vet team and I don't worry leaving kitty with them for the whole day for dental cleaning. Dr Mattu is very caring and makes an effort to say hi and asks about the baby even if your appointment was not with him. We will stay with University Veterinary for as long as we live in the bay area. The vet team really cares about the health of your pet and this really shows.

I wouldn't recommend this vet to others. The vet I met with in the appointment was very nice, but the other aspects of my three experiences here weren't great. Each time, there's been a sort of comical mess with my paperwork and getting back to me when their staff has said they would. For example, I was once sent my dog's x rays, but the email I got was for a cat. Another time, the staff said they would follow-up with me and didn't, and a third time when I asked for help deciding which version of a joint support supplement to get they told me to read the instructions to decide (I had -- but it still wasn't clear to me). This type of thing is so understandable when it happens once, but it's happened each time I've gone here. The last thing about this vet is that each time I feel like they are upselling me on services my other vets have never pushed me to get, which makes me feel kind of yucky. This disorganization overall made me choose not to return here and keep going to my old vet in San Francisco, even though I now live in the East Bay.

One year ago I found a lost dog hiding under my car. she was in horrible shape.. scared, very skinny, you can see ribcage and backbone showing from lack of food, very dirty and infested with fleas. This dog needs help. Fast forward two days.. I have never been to a vet before so I was driving around looking for one that would accept walk'ins. The first place I stopped at looks very nice and professional but my gut feeling said nah. My second stop was at University pet hospital at their old building. The place didn't look so modern from outside but something about it says welcome. It's around noon, they were busy plus it's lunch time..oh joy. I was more nervous than the dog walking in lol. I thought they was goona turn me away when they asked if had an appointment. But they didnt..Wow! Long story short..my first time at the vet and first impression is what's important to me. This place is awsome!! Dr. Mattu and Dr. Laura Fosbender are great. James and Roger..the vet techs are friendly and cool. What an unbelievably professional and compassionate staff. They had to put my cat down (brain damage), but they did so in a very caring and respectful way (both to my cat and to me). I've unfortunately had to put other pets down, but the manner in which they handled the situation stands out in how genuine and caring they were. First time at this vet -- came in to have them take a look at my old pup's nose, it was cracked and swollen. Other than the wait to see the vet, everything was great. Dr. Fosbender spent a while with us, learning about my dog's history, letting my dog get comfortable before checking her out. She presented us treatment options and allowed us to decide. I liked that she made suggestions about a course of treatment and talked about how to weigh the options to fit our budget. "Options, not judgements," she said. I left feeling informed and like I was working with a partner to help my pup feel better... and she is!

The rescue where I got my 2 dogs was linked with this hospital. At first, doctor Mattu seemed friendly. He raised his prices often throughout the year, which seemed too much, but as long as he was caring towards our dogs, we didn't mind as much. He then began having less patience with them, especially the puppy. My boyfriend witnessed the doctor grab him from the neck, stretched it backwards and attempted to draw blood from it, my boyfriend yelled at the doctor and his team, grabbed our dog and we have not been back since then. It seems that as long as people are around, he seems fake friendly, but always keep an eye on your pets. Thankfully, we found a veterinarian with much better bedside manners and compassion for my dogs.

I have made the rounds, and this is the Vet I like best. There is a good coupon for a discount the first visit, and then afterward they didn't make me have office visits if I could just drop off a specimen or something. Very friendly and helpful on the phone. And vet was good at sharing info and didn't act like he owned my dog. Also, the vet said they could not house dogs for more than a couple of nights due to small space. I really like that because the berkeley dog and pet hospital will house dogs forever when they have even less space than this one. Much more ethical here. Free parking in back.

In the past, I liked University Veterinary Hospital because they were honest about procedure and cost. However, something change and they are more focused on requiring extra visits and extra fees. They are more salesy and pushing more procedures and steps. This is something new... and unfortunate. I tried getting one visit, but was told I would need two and, therefore, pay for two visits (even if I only had one) for a tooth extraction. They accommodated me in the past... so not sure what changed. And, YES, I did find another vet clinic that would do the tooth extraction in one visit, same day, without the added fees, etc., etc.

They were friendly but very understaffed and then had to restart the server in order to print invoices. I wish they could have just emailed it to me. I did not leave my 9:30am appointment until 11:40. It was a wellness exam for 2 cats, plus a blood/urine draw on 1 of them. I would definitely use them again, I would just not plan anything for several hours afterwards. Update: Just days later they emailed me to let me know the status of one of the tests they were going to run (plus 1 star). However, they did not run one of the tests they were supposed to (didn't charge me for it either) and emailed to let me know to see if I still wanted it. (minus 1 star). I said yes, I still want the test. They called to process payment in the am, then someone called about the exact same thing in the afternoon. Clearly they are overworked, but good at what they do.

I've come here multiple times and most of my visits were without advanced appointment , yet they were able to squeeze me in. I spayed my dog Bubbles here and they took great care of her. Friendly staff - I feel like my dogs are in good hands here. The vet is not only friendly but also takes time to talk to me about my pet and any concerns I may have. They never try to add any unnecessary services or fees either.

I took my cat here when she was just a kitten. I think we ended up going twice, maybe three times, and we boarded her there once for a day while our apartment was being sprayed. While the staff are overall friendly, I found it very disconcerting that they had to take my cat into the backroom in order to treat her. She had to get blood drawn once, which is a little more understandable as a reason to take her back, but even when she just got vaccines they always took her into the back. I am sure they treated her with care, but it is very strange to me that they couldn't do it in the room with me. I was not prepared for this, as no vet I have ever been to did this, so just be aware. The vet techs were great, and very knowledgeable, and the vet seemed to be as well, but he had very little "bedside manner" and I found him more business like than I would have liked. Overall it was an okay experience, but I have since moved on as I was never comfortable with them having to take my kitten into the back.

I have been a customer for over 5 years and have had 3 cats treated by them including my current kitty. Always easy to schedule, appointments are kept on time to the minute and overall a great experience. Sadly I have also experienced the down side of pet ownership with them, having to bring an aging pet to them and deal with impending death. My kitty was not eating or drinking after a stressful cross-country move. It was a huge concern because fasting can be dangerous for cats and may cause liver damage after only a few days. I took her to UVH on Day 3 of not eating, and they gave her fluids for dehydration and some very fragrant appetite-stimulating high-calorie food. They also gave me a deadline by which she needed to eat. The thing that most impressed me was that the vet called (on a Sunday) to inquire about her on the day before the deadline, as did a nurse on the day of the deadline. And, best of all...she's finally eating! I'm grateful for the excellent care and I'm relieved that my sweet cat seems to be over the hump.

The staff have aways been incredibly friendly to me and my cat (Paolo) and have been very straightforward in explaining the procedures and medications he requires. I am very comfortable at the office/clinic, and while Paolo is often nervous (due to the fact that it's the vet), the staff are caring and ensure that he is treated well. While the office/clinic is located far down University Ave., it is very accessible by bus. I took my cat in here for a visit. The vet assistant would be best describes as "lost"; she fell short sufficiently to put my cats health and recovery at risk, seriously. The vet was not impressive and definitely tried to steer me toward the most costly treatment, which of course was most invasive. Instead, I went the least invasive route first and used only 1 of the three medications I just had to buy from them. After buying the medication, I researched them at home and found the mark up at this clinic to be up to 10X the retail cost. I spend $150 on medication alone. Given my least invasive approach as first line of treatment at the real retail cost, the expense for my cats medication would have been $5. Yes, I have no doubt I was being taken for a ride when the vet suggested surgery and hospital stay as the first course of treatment for an infection. I deserve to be treated with respect and my cat deserves to not be treated like a means to make more money. I will never go back here again.

So far so good! Very happy with our first visit here. We went because of high reviews online, unlike many other vets in the area. We used a Yelp coupon to make the first visit a little more affordable. There is still an undeniable amount of vaccines that animals have to get, so we did spend a little more than we thought on the visit, but they are very thorough and present all the options to you. We're not sure how much flea medication costs online or in cheaper places, so we probably couldve saved a lot of money there, but they get deals with companies, too, so we got two free months of flea meds. Very nice and knowledgeable staff and doctors.

I had the best possible vet experience with Dr. Fosbender and nurse Leslie at UVH this week. My dog Lula's eye started to get inflamed and teary over the weekend. On Sunday morning we took her to a different vet (not UVH), who had us wait for three hours for a drop-in appointment and wanted to put her under full sedation, keep her for a day, and charge us $900 to figure out and treat the problem. My mother in law is a vet, and this seemed really extreme to us, so we decided to wait a day and see if it resolved. When it didn't resolve, I called UVH to get a second opinion. The first amazing thing about them is that they fit me in for an appointment within a few hours and Leslie began working with us basically as soon as we arrived. The second thing that impressed me was that they called three of Lula's past vets to get her medical records, and Dr. Fosbender had actually reviewed them before our appointment. Most importantly though, when Dr. Fosbender came in and did her initial exam, she found a fox tail under my dog's eyelid and just pulled it out immediately! Then, to make sure there was no other debris or damage, she gave my dog a local anesthetic (not full sedation!) and did the same tests that vet #1 had recommended. Leslie and the doctor explained each treatment really well before getting my permission. The total bill (including two medications not prescribed by vet #1) was $250, and the whole procedure took about a half hour. Bottom line: UVH is super well-organized by its administrative staff, has an extremely skilled, efficient, and thoughtful medical team, and charges reasonable prices. I'm so glad we found such great care for Lula!

I bring my French Bulldog here since my original vet is back home in Fresno. They have a very clean office that is welcoming. The parking is not good but it is near a residential area so it’s not too hard to find parking, and it’s right off the freeway. They have free treats for your pup in the main lobby, and complimentary cooled drinks in a small black fridge in each of the rooms. Very professional vets that will cater to your pets needs. I highly recommend coming here, especially if you have a Frenchie :)

We have been bringing our cats here for five years and wouldn't think of going anywhere else! Dr. Matu and crew have taken our cat with Irritable Bowel Syndrome from being a diarrhea disaster to a care-free cat. Our other cat, who is scared of everyone, has come to trust the staff and doesn't freak out when going to the vet. Plus, they submit our claims to our insurance company and we get the money within a week. Don't cheap out on your pets - they deserve the same type of care that you would want for yourself, and this is the place to get it!

Just went for my first visit to University Vet. I was referred here by my sister. I brought my 2 cats, who don't see the vet very often, for a check-up and to see why one of them seemed to be losing weight. Dr. Fosbender and her veterinarian's assistant saw me soon after I arrived. They were very friendly, kind, and patient- to the cats and to me. They spent 45 minutes with me examining the 2 cats, explaining basic health issues, and explaining possible problems that might be causing the weight issue in my cat. They explained the costs of various treatment options and didn't pressure me into extra treatment. I was very impressed by their professionalism and the care they showed to my cats. Parking is even easy- park in the grocery outlet parking lot! Hope all my future visits are just as good.
