super sweet staff and they always take great care of my cat and take time to answer questions
I always feel good going into Berkeley Dog and Cat Hospital. The site itself is pleasant and light, and the people who work there are happy and easygoing (and very sympathetic when appropriate). Plus,I look forward to seeing any of the vets who work there. In this case, my small dog seemed be trying to remove something that was caught in his teeth or throat, and though I was concerned, he wasn't in great distress. They are a 24-hour emergency facility, but the staff found me a normal, non-emergency appointment, which saved me a lot of money. Naturally by the time I got there, my dog had resolved the issue himself, but we went ahead and brought his vaccinations up to date. We saw Dr Lee, who was delightful. My dog and I both liked and trusted her immediately. But the bottom line is -- the bottom line, which wasn't as expensive as I thought it was going to be!
there are not enough words to tell you how wonderful everyone was during our traumatic experience with our 10 week old puppy. she was bitten in the eye by a big dog and was in pain and bleeding and they scooped her out of my arms and took immediate care of her. and in the interim was sweet and supportive to me!!! a great group of people from the front desk to the people behind the scene!!! I highly recommend this facility. I saw how they handled other people and their animals both cats and dogs with the greatest of genteelness and compassion to both animals and their care givers!!!
Crappy, overpriced vet. They are too willing to to use expensive diagnostic procedures and skip the most basic ones, such as actually using your hands and eyes to examine the animal. My wife took our dog here recently to be told she had gastritis. Our visit cost $1200 and was a waste of time and money. Her actual illness? Severe ear infection. Took me 5 minutes to figure out where her pain was and come up with an idea of what was wrong. This was confirmed by the wonderful vets at Bishop Ranch Vet Clinic in San Ramon. I highly suggest their services. They are more knowledgeable and affordable. Never using this vet again. Neither should you.
I've been taking my cats to Berkeley Dog and Cat for about twenty years. During that time, they have had exceptional care from their vet, Dr. Amy Benjamin, and the Emergency Department doctors. They have saved the lives of my babies several times. I recommend them highly.
I love this vet more than anything! They take care of me and my fur baby with such genuine concern and respect. My Pomsky, Zoe needed her one year shots and check up so we made an appointment and saw Dr. Freeman. Zoe loves him, she was giving him kisses and wagging her tail when he greeted us. He spoke to me about all the shots, the different ways I could schedule them for her and any risks that may be involved. We agreed on a method and off they went while I waited in the room. When Zoe came back she seemed a little nervous and had an upset tummy. When I shared that with Dr. Freeman he quickly ordered a shot to calm her and one to help in case she was having a reaction. He moved at a quick pace and made sure Zoe and I were okay. After this the vet tech Jennivive (who is a stellar and amazing tech) took us to a secret outside backyard where Zoe could relax and play with a chicken—a BIG red chicken. Zoe perked up immediately. Maybe it was the sunshine, maybe it was the chicken therapy, maybe it was the shot... I truly believe it was the concern and care that the vet showed to Zoe that made her instantly feel better. Dr. Freeman even offered to keep Zoe that afternoon for observation at no charge. What service! I would recommend Berkeley Dog and Cat to anyone who considers their pet a family member. What an amazing vet. Thank you for caring for Zoe ;)
I brought my 14 year old kitty to BDCH this morning and saw Dr. Wood (I believe). It was a first time visit. She was great with my kitty, really spent the time and explained my options for my aging kitty that I thought were appropriate and sensitive to our specific needs. I'm very grateful for her attention and ability to be so present at the same time. I'm happy to have found a place and doctor I can trust with an important family member!
The place is very welcoming, it does not smell or look miserable like a lot of other pet hospitals. There's complimentary tea and coffee through a Keurig machine (not the most waste efficient, but I still appreciated the gesture). The staff are nice and very casual. Our cat is pretty chill as it is, but he seemed comfortable, and the tech and veterinarian were super sweet and calm with him. Our cat was also allowed to roam the exam room while waiting between the tech and vet, which I think he appreciated. We were given a break-down of the costs (upon request) before agreeing to the treatments, and they were not pushy about things we could not afford for that day. The vet was also very responsive to our questions and gave a lot of helpful recommendations and explanations without imposing further at all. She also gave us her contact info (email) and is open to answering any further questions via email. Overall one of the best vet experiences I've had. Here were the prices of the services we encountered: Vet check up: $71 (worth it, got a lot of good information. This fee will be either lower or waived if it is a tech appointment, as it will be for our vaccine booster shots) Each vaccine we got: ~$26 Waste disposal fee: $7 6-month flea medication: $86 Leukemia & AIDS test: $104
My experience here was by far the best pet ER experience I've had in 30 years of being a cat parent. Everyone was compassionate and professional including the front desk, vet tech and the vet. They were extremely thorough and provided first class service at very reasonable rates. Thanks!
The pet care and customer service are excellent here. Everyone has been very kind and they clearly love animals.
They take you in quickly, the rooms are clean, the vets are nice. My cat hasn't yet had any serious health problems that I could rate how they handle those situations. They occasionally try to sell you something but they don't push too hard.
Randi is the BEST vet tech here!
Over the six decades that we've had dogs and cats, we've taken them to many fine vets in the Bay Area, even to Davis when necessary. But none of our previous experiences compares to the outstanding care our dog has received at Berkeley Dog and Cat since we moved here 4 years ago. Diagnosis, treatment, compassion, expertise, availability of care, in every parameter, excellent. Even prices are good!
Berkeley Dog and Cat has provided us outstanding service for 30 years. On the rare occasions when our pets have needed specialty care or hospitalization, I've thought that humans should receive such good care when they go to the hospital. Highly recommend.
FROM BEGINNING TO END: These angels have helped me through years of care for both my dogs. Recently one came down with multiple organ issues. They quickly diagnosed and handled her with loving hands. After three days my fifteen year old Chihuahua let me know she was no longer interested in treatment, eating or moving. Late in the evening I came in with her and my other dog to say goodbye. We were escorted to a private room. Bugs and I sat on the sofa and were given as much time as needed. Bear was on floor close by. The workers were so gentle. They talked me through it all. I have been through this before with other pets, but this experience was different. The staff love, atmosphere and time allowed created for a very smooth experience. Our memories of saying goodbye to bugs will be one calm and peace. Thank you Berkeley Dog & Cat Hospital
Out standing!
This place is the best, the people are so nice and the doctors are incredible. I would reccomend this place to anyone who has a pet of any kind. On my last visit someone was leaving with their pet rat that had surgery. How cool!
Compassionate, professional - leaders in their field! (Signed) Jane Vavra Jolly, secretary to 3 amazing cats
Thought that my cat broke his leg, arrived at this vet for the first time and immediately they set to work figuring out what was wrong. Pretty rapidly diagnosed as a blot clot that had cut off circulation to (old) cat's legs. The doc had to explain to me, unsuspecting, that this was terminal. So I should have bad associations with this place ... but in fact they took care of me and my kitty under extreme duress with the most gentle and open and caring path through options about what to do and how to do it. Wish I'd taken kitty there instead of a place closer to home for previous emergencies.
Skilled personnel, but it's expensive.
Dr. Thomas was really thorough and nice. He explained all of our questions and concerns about our sweet little Katy. The front staff was friendly as well. If she needs a vet again, we will definitely go to Berkeley Dog and Cat!
With two dogs and two lizards that are getting the best service and care, we are really really happy with Berkeley dog and cat hospital. They are professional, efficient, know what needs to be done, and very honest and fair with the charges. highly recommended!
Dr. Freeman treats our skittish and vet shy dog with such care and gentleness that she is calm during our well visits and vaccination times. Berkeley Dog and Cat vets and staff keep up to date with best practice, and share that information with their clients. We recommend this practice.
I took my older cat in to be checked for possible poisoning after he chomped on a lily leaf. Dr. Freeman and Genevieve saw him, and were attentive to the fact that this cat is very timid with strangers and frightens easily. They spent at least an hour working with him, including running a blood test, and confirmed that his vital signs and blood levels were normal - so, a huge relief! The front desk technicians were also supportive and quickly submitted an insurance claim - Thank you!
Berkeley Dog & Cat is an outstanding vet. Between our 2 dogs, we have had many reasons to visit-- routine visits, illnesses, and injuries. Every vet our dogs have seen as well as the Vet Techs are kind, patient, and thorough in their explanations. I also really appreciate that the Vets follow up after emergency visits. Knowing that they are 24-hour, in case an emergency comes up, is also reassuring. I've tried several other vets in the East Bay and Berkeley Dog & Cat is the best!
This place rules!! Terrific staff who provide quality and sincere care for your pet whether emergency or routine.
Nice folks. Only game in town for 24 hour and for exotics.
We had to bring our cat in for an emergency. All the staff were warm and professional especially this gal Sierra. Thank you all so much for the great care. Wilson is on the mend!
Awesome experience from the minute we first called them, to a Sunday appointment, to the staff and Vet. Stubborn cat had serious dental issues and flea issues, despite our efforts. Dr. Jeff, Genevieve, Dean, all were warm and helpful. We'll be back! Thanks for taking good care of us.
Holy smokes they have a tortoise specialist! We drove down from Marin and it is worth the drive! We found Dr Harkewicz from the recommendations of the reptile store down the street and Dr Harkewicz knows his tortoises! We caught a vitamin A deficiency pretty early and dr didn’t try to over sell us like most experiences I’ve found at vets. Instead I felt like he put us on the right path to better tortoise husbandry. I will definitely be going back, not just for problems but for yearly check ups (I never thought I’d do that for a tortoise). Thank you Berkeley dog and cat hospital!
We fully trust them with our dogs health. Can’t imagine a better place with more reputable docs.
Service was good. Clean and professional atmosphere. Too many pets were in the small lobby area. May need to increase time between appointments.
I was able to make a same day appt for my reptile. I was running late due to an accident on the freeway. I called, they understood and rescheduled me for an appt an hr later. They even said while I was waiting I could get in sooner. I did! The staff was extremely nice and knowledgeable. Prices were reasonable for the treatment my reptile received.
I love taking Honeybun Puppyface to Berkeley Dog & Cat and she loves going there too although she has to put up a good front and pretend to resent some procedures.
I took my 14-year-old dog to Berkeley Dog And Cat today. It was an excellent experience. They were easy to book an appointment with and the vet himself was amazing. They didn’t try to sell me unnecessary dog care and really seemed to understand my situation (end of life care). In the end my bill was very reasonable ($125) which included a refill of her existing meds and a new one hoping to ease her arthritis pain. Very reasonable!
This place is safe my kitten Loui life, he was dying on my hands when me and my boyfriend drove us to the hospital at 2am I guess we was really surprised when doctor cam to the waiting room where we was waiting, the doctor tell as diagnosis and consume diagnos that doctor really smart I would say professional and saver I'm pretty sure multiple animals life ! The doctor was lady and she is from Germany I idn't remember her name and I'm feel bad about... How easy and really appreciate when dealing with professionals them jobs . It's best animals serve place in whole California. Of course for high quality service high price speshaly when Loui has to be there 3 days but there's life us lovers nothing could work for them ! Thank you so much all workes who work there we are really needed you guys but we never know when but there are there 24hours for us lovers
I drive from Oakland to have my dog cared for by Berkeley Dog & Cat. I went there w/ my other dog. I think I have been taking my dogs there for over 10 years. They love every pet they see. I wouldn't go anywhere else.
Great staff and service! My go-to spot when it comes to my four-legged friends.
Worst vet I have ever been in. They tried to take my dog away and hurted my daughters mentally. They where very rude wouldn’t recommend at all.
Had one of those weekend emergencies that couldn't wait until Monday to see our regular vet. We had an excellent experience at Berkeley Dog and Cat. The staff were all very kind and sensitive to my frightened dog's needs. Of course, it being an emergency, we had no appointment on a Sunday and they were booked. But they saw us within 10 minutes of arriving, assessed my pup, talked to us about the suggested diagnostics, and an estimate. Then we got the x-rays done, results reviewed, and medications filled. All this in less than an hour. I'm seriously considering making them my regular vet. Bonus points for a free parking, and the offer of helping me with getting my injured pup out of the car and into the clinic.
Very knowledgeable and professional great job on advising me about my tortoise and how to keep him healthier in the future very pleased glad I stopped by .
Excellent service, from the helpers at the front desk, to the Lab techs and the Doctors.. You can tell these people love animals, it shows in the little interactions with you pet....and the care they provide.
I was out of the country and had a cat emergency. After she was brought in, the doctor spoke to me (Facebook messenger on speaker phone!) explaining her condition and my options. I expressed my wishes that she receive.comfort care only and he respected my wishes, which, in my experience, is rare in this age when vets are more than eager to institute extraordinary measures in an otherwise hopeless situation. Despite her outcome, I felt my cat received superlative care and the doctor was patient and made sure I understood my options. Highly recommend.
Staff is always so sweet to my kitties! Always willing to answer my questions. Great service.
I called for an urgent visit on a Saturday and was able to go in right away. They evaluated my dog and gave me a summary of possible diagnoses and send me on my way. My dog got tested and I got a call within 2 hrs. Dr. Johnson was thorough and informative. The staff were very attentive to my dog's needs. We felt well taken care of. I would recommend Berkeley dog and cat to everyone. Great service and care.
This place is absolutely WONDERFUL! Everyone is always super sweet, extremely short wait times. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Thank you for everything :)!!
We’ve taken our two rats here for ongoing treatment of upper respiratory issues. The vets, assistants, and staff are all great to work with and super helpful. We’ve seen Dr. Harkewicz who is very strait forward and easy to communicate with via email. We’ve also seen Dr. Sip who is very proactive and friendly. I’d recommend them both for caring for your pocket pets. In recent months Dr. Sip has gone above and beyond in finding different meds to try to get some improvement, at one point bringing my girl back from really struggling and giving her a few more months with better quality of life. We are very thankful to have found this place as first time rat owners.
Highly recommend Dr. Sip and Dr. Harkewicz for issues related to guinea pigs.
I brought my dogs here at the recommendation of a friend at my work. We just had some shots done, but they were absolutely lovely and patient with me and my two big pups. My youngest dog decided to howl while he was in the patient room and the staff took it in stride. I am new to the area and knowing that I have this great vet on speed dial gives me so much peace of mind now.
The majority of the staff is very personable and welcoming. And I always try to make my appointments with Dr. Freeman. He is amazing! He is very knowledgeable, thoughtful, and clearly an animal lover. He took great care of my dog when he was diagnosed with cancerous tumors, and continues to take great care of him now that he is in remission. I would say Dr. Freeman is the main reason I have committed to this clinic and will continue to do so. Thank you!
I could not be happy with the care at Berkeley Dog and Cat.. I have used them for 20 years for 5 dogs. Excellent care and compassion
Always caring and capable.
everyone who works here loves animals . the place is super clean, and the staff are even friendly to humans!
The care at this clinic surpasses any I have experienced anywhere except a vet at I had 50 years ago who would have loved to have had the technology that this clinic has available. I have had many animals of all kinds from farm animals of all varieties , thoroughbred horses, birds , dogs, cats, rodents , and reptiles and I really wish that they could have received the care that my four dogs are now privileged to receive from this group. I don’t think you could find anything better without going to UC Davis. The staff is informative, caring, friendly and efficient at all levels as well. That makes it an especially reassuring place to receive treatment for your pets.
Nice & clean atmosphere.
We've taken our cats here for 14 years. They always get great care from kind and competent vets and staff. The 24 hour emergency services are a great bonus too.
I have been using the services provided by Berkeley Dog & Cat for about 16 years now, primarilly for my dog, who has always received excellent care. Recently, however, I had to use their weekend emergency services for one of my cats. Everyone there, from the front office people to the medical staff were friendly, professional, and extremely helpful. My cat is fine now and it is thanks to them.
This is the best veterinarian group I''be ever encountered! All the docs with whom I've interacted have been great - clinically excellent with good bedside manner. The staff is always friendly and helpful. They have appointments 7 days a week with convenient times and 24 hr emergency services as well, so I can go where my cat is known if there is ever an emergency. They also sell a wide array of products. It's a friendly one-stop shop for my pet. Highly recommend!
Great people, very knowledgeable and friendly. Parking can be tough some days. The nearest coffee place is a block away.
The vets are good. The kennel service is sometimes lacking. My dog got kennel cough while boarding here and ended up with pneumonia as a complication.
Dr. Harkewicz Is absolutely amazing! He treated our slider turtle on several occasions. He accurately diagnosed her and gave us sound advice for treatment and never imposed unnecessary procedures. Dr. Harkewicz is a great veterinarian and I have total confidence in his ability!
The Care!
Attentive! They took good care of Jeff in the middle of the night and took good care of Banjo with an appointment. 10/10 would recommend
Dr. Siperstein is a caring veterinarian who really understands and knows how to take care of guinea pigs and rabbits! I wish I liked my own doctor as well as I like her.
I currently have 3 dogs and have had others as well, all seen by Berkeley Dog and Cat. I've had good experiences with most Dr's here... Dr Freeman is a wonderful vet...
Professional and friendly staff
This is a very efficient, generously staffed, and caring and responsive veterinary service which has an emergency 24 hour service also. We recently had a number of contacts with them and felt that our dog was well cared for and appropriately treated. Wait times were not long; they have off street parking; interior is clean and well-kept. Overall very satisfied.
Ariel was crouching over in pain and whimpering and i was beside myself with worry and fear when we walked in to Berkeley Dog and Cat Hospital last Tuesday morning. She had been listless and tired for a day or so and that had turned to pain and whimpering. Monica was the tech that examined her first, so gently and kindly. She got down on the floor in the reception areas and spoke to Ariel so lovingly and seemed to understand immediately how bewildered and confused Ariel was by the pain she was experiencing. I knew right away we had come to the right place. Monica took Ariel to the examining room and about a half hour later Dr. Vo came to discuss Ariel's condition. When she explained how much diagnostic work was required I started crying- I felt certain I I had been a terrible owner to let Ariel get this sick. Dr Vo held my hand in both her hands and comforted me - she told me she was sure i was not to blame, explained what she thought was happening and relieved my worrying. A few hours later we had diagnosed and begun to treat Ariel's urinary tract infection. Today - less then a week later Ariel is back to her high energy self, chasing our cats and jumping on the furniture. I cannot recommend Berkeley Dog and Cat Hospital more strongly. Not just for the excellent training and quality of the care provided by their personnel, but for their kindness and compassion.
I recently brought my Bearded Dragon in as a result of lack of appetite. Dr. Sip was amazing as was the customer service at the front desk. They are warm and professional. I know we are in great hands there.
I’ve posted a positive review on Yelp in the past. I’m following up here because Dr. Freeman deserves a shout out. He’s wonderful and respectful. It’s definitely a team approach with him - that is, he explains options thoroughly, giving pros and cons and respects the financial considerations most of us have to contend with. He is interested in educating us pet people and is a wealth of information. I left feeling confident with the approaches we agreed to take regarding my dog’s skin issues. I highly recommend him.
We have taken our pets (dogs, cats, parrots) to Berkeley Dog and Cat for more years than I can count out of my 86. The staff, starting with the founders, are proficient, courteous, and compassionate. They have put an arm around my shoulders when a beloved pet had to be put down and cautioned me to drive carefully on the way home. They have laughed with me when a pet amused us. They have no equals.
Not Kuku’s favorite place, but they sure take great care of her here. Emergency appointment availability is a godsend.
First experience with a sick snake! All of the staff were wonderful and the doctor and assistant spent so much time with me and I was very impressed.
We are long-time clients who have had many cats cared for here. Doctors and staff are caring and compassionate and wonderful with our animals. We have referred many friends with good results.
We like BDCH because the doctors there are all very knowledgeable and they have specialists in various veterinary disciplines like surgery, orthopedics and medicine. Super friendly staff. Only downside, small parking lot, sometimes difficult to park.
we love having our pet care within walking distance and getting very attentive care when we need to bring our animals in. we also are very happy with 24 hour care , expensive but worth it. they focus on many preventative aspects of care and we are very appreciative of that as well. our long time veterinarian had to leave because of family reasons but our new veterinarian is kind and practical and knows her stuff!
Phoebe is often nervous going to vets. She felt very comfortable with the staff and at the facility. She came back in the room wagging her tail after getting a shot.
Good vets, techs and office help but pretty pricey. I'd suggest they have senior rates....
Great customer service
Excellent service! We were seen on time (I have NEVER had that happen for any medical appointment, for human or animal!), and all the staff members were incredibly kind, helpful, and knowledgeable. The vet already had studied our pet's records from our previous vet and spoke with us clearly about our choices for treatment. Getting the needed prescriptions was also very easy. We were very pleased. Thank you, Berkeley Dog and Cat!
Great ,loving veterinarians and stuff, very helpful ,lots of knowledge. Great service! !! They have acupuncture for dogs too, besides western medicine I love this place
Finally found a place with qualified vets experienced in amphibians to look at our sick school frog. Very helpful, caring and thorough exam and followup information to help us get our guy back healthy. Many thanks!
Affordable and considerate.
The staff, vet techs and vets are always really kind, provide lots of options, listen to all my concerns and are very attentive to my dog. She is really nervous and uncomfortable going to the vet and everyone there always showers her with attention and affection to make her feel more comfortable.
I have been bringing my cats to Berkeley DOG & CAT for almost 35! Their VETs are incredibly compassionate people...The techs are also wonderful. Everybody that I have encountered at BD&G has been a true animal Lover!
I had an appointment and minimal wait, even though the office was full and a walk-in. The "assistant" who welcomed us, gained my pet's confidence quickly, asked questions, listened and went to get Dr. Mintern. There was short wait and Dr.Mintern presented possibilities clearly, answered questions and concerns and set a direction. I appreciated his thoughtful answers to my questions and concerns. Jack
After the paperwork they were supposed to give back the difference when I put my kitty to sleep. They didn't give me back the remaining balance and kept my transport cage. What a way to relief pain. They said formally it would be in three days and never came back to front desk...
I have been taking my non human family to Berkeley Dog and Cat since the mid 70s. I think they have always offered the very best in animal care and treatments. For example in the 80s they were the only animal hospital in the east bay that kept a doctor and staff around the clock for their hospitalized patients. They now have all kinds of specialists, including a wonderful dentist and a dermatologist. For the past decade or so our primary vet was Dr. McBride. She was excellent, and very kind and caring. She left the hospital, and I switched to Dr. Amy Benjamin. She is also an amazing veterinarian, and really knows and cares about my two dogs. All of the veterinarians and staff go out of their way to be helpful and friendly, but most importantly they offer the best and most up to date treatments in veterinary medicine. Diana Navon
Impeccable! Everyone is so helpful there. It's a little pricier than other places so it might not be necessary for routine things but for complex cases like one of my dogs, it is well worth it. I highly recommend this place.
Though they couldn't see us because of more critical emergencies, they were very clear on how long we'd have to wait and gave us alternatives. I opted to have my cat seen the next day and the doctor is great!
Knowledgeable, efficient, compassionate, always available. That's the whole package!
Good people.
I will give one star because I think Beth, their veterinary acupuncturist is great. But the rest of this corporate animal hospital is careless, unprofessional, and unresponsive. So why the lack of any other stars? Take your pick: - I became a client here in November 2018 and provided all the necessary information to have my records transferred. They never did it. Fast forward to January when one of my dogs needed a biopsy. They asked me for my records and said they had none. I reminded them that they had requested them back in November. They then scrambled to input them, inputting them incorrectly twice (someone actually entered that my dogs had *received* vaccines in November 2020. what???), before finally (I hope!) getting them entered correctly. And then they realized my dogs were late on some booster shots. - They refuse to fill online prescriptions, forcing you to either spend 3-times as much in their pharmacy or to get written prescriptions. I opted for the latter. I requested my written prescriptions and asked to have them ready a week later to pick up. I showed up and no one knew anything about them. There were no notes about them, there was no information, there was just nothing. - I spent quite a lot of money here. I could only afford it because I had pet insurance. At the beginning, my insurance claims were being submitted within 3 days of my payments. But the more money I spent on my dogs, the more time it was taking them to submit the insurance claims. I spent over $900 over two days in March. It took them to over 3 weeks to submit correct and complete insurance forms for both my dogs. During that time, they submitted an incomplete invoice for one of my dogs 3 times (because I kept calling and begging them to please submit the claim) and they continually completely forgot to submit one for my other dog. They claimed it was the insurance company's fault. A little research proved that incorrect. hey were only submitting page one of a multi-page invoice for one dog and not submitting anything for my other dog. Once I called the animal hospital and told them that, they finally submitted both claims and the complete invoice correctly. But really? It had to come to that? What is wrong with these people? - Most recently, I had a $400+ panel test for one of my dogs. The vet called me with the results a day later and said my dog needed to be on special prescription food. We talked AT LENGTH about which foods would work. He said he would leave the food up front for me. I told him I would be in some time that week to pick them up. I drove across town a few days later, making a special trip to pick up the food. In the hospital, I was waiting behind a woman who drove all the way from San Leandro to pick up medicine for her pet that the vet had called and told her was ready. The front desk had no medicine for her and no notes. She left empty-handed and frustrated. Sucks for her, I thought ironically. As I stepped up, I told the staff I was picking up prescription food for my dog that Dr. Minturn had told me was ready. They could find no notes, no food, nothing. And he wasn't in. They brought in a vet tech who tried to start guessing what my dog needed. Nope. As I left, I said I would like Dr. Minturn to call me. Several hours later at home, I wrote an email requesting Dr. Minturn call me regarding my wasted trip across town. You know who was too cowardly to ever call me and apologize or explain? Dr. Minturn. A front desk staff person, Jane, did call and tried to blame the staff for not knowing where to find the notes, but I've since learned he never left notes, anywhere. It even took him over 10 days to sign off the one-page simple insurance form so the claim for the $400+ bill could be submitted. He only did so after the pet insurance representative called the hospital to inquire what the hold up was and after I filed a complaint against the hospital for careless and unprofessional service. Cowards. Incompetent, passive-aggressive, dishonest cowards. Nope.
Just took mary to get a check up and i have to say best visit ever and the information i got i will never forget plus the help and everything that was done went beyond my expectations and mary is going to have a very long life cause of there help.
We came in for an emergency visit with a severely dehydrated dog who was lethargic and vomiting and had blood in her stool. She was taken in right away even though things were busy. They gave her great care and kept her overnight to attend to her hydration/medication needs. I appreciated getting costs upfront before procedures were done. In the end, she recovered fully, but I was also really happy that our pet insurance covered most of the cost.
My first time here today with my 12 year old chihuahua and I had the nicest experience ever! The front desk guy with glasses was super helpful. It was busy but everything flowed. The vet was really great as well...he didn’t try to charge me unnecessary fees but explained all the options and then was honest about what he felt was necessary for my dog. The entire cost including the exam+one vaccine+medication was under$150.00! Not all pet owners can afford huge vet fees for their furry family members so the fact that they accept Care Credit card payment is everything! Thank you Karyn&Bacon
I took my two cats and my dog to Berkeley Dog and Cat Hospital and was always beyond impressed with the competent and compassionate care the entire team always provided--to both animal and humans. Today I took a friend's dog in for urgent care and was reminded how wonderful this team is. I always recommend Berkeley Dog & Cat to anyone who asks.
We the the name should be changed to be Berkeley Frog, Dog and Cat. Had to take our wild caught 2 yr old Pacific (Sierran) Tree Frog in for suspected parasite. Dr. Harkowicz was great, he explained all kinds of things to me and my sons. There isn't a whole lot cuter in life than watching a vet use a stethoscope to check the heartbeat of a tiny frog.
Not coming back for routine procedures ever. might come for disease treatment or emergencies (hope will not need to). Update: as you can see they replied here. well, they do have my number, this information I provided when I registered for the appointment and before the appointment again. yet, they want ME to call THEM... Details. We were seen by Rebecca Abrams - this review is only on her service and the organization of the clinic in general. - waiting room is large, many animals are there but as for me it is all ok. if you have a dog with anxiety it might not be for you. - waiting time for me was around 10 min, which is also fine. now, the appointment: - inability to handle dog efficiently. no knowledge or lack of experience in using treats and distractions. - ignoring or refusing the help of the owner in performing procedures - grabbing the dog by the snout, letting go when the pup is kicking, ignoring requests of the owner to do the "teeth showing" (I'm glad we are training, but if this is the only experience your puppy will get - better no experience than this) - attempts to restrain a puppy during a procedures as simple as vaccination (puppy is ~4 mo, not aggressive at all) now I understand why they wanted to vaccinate him without me (I've never seen this before) - it's simply because she does not know how to work with the dog (well, an active, not lethargic) without restraining it and by some reason does not allow the owner to be involved (until I literally stopped both of them because they were scaring him and that was absolutely the worst). I have been around dogs from my childhood, have another dog of 10 years, was around veterinarians and dog training professionals (and was one) for many years. and yet, I was questioned on the diet (yeah, I feed raw) and even advised when I did not request it at all. to sum up. I have no clue if they have good diagnostics and disease treatment. I will go there in case of emergency. but if you have a problem with your dog's behavior - go else where, or at least try to get to another practitioner. for vaccines, now that we are done with puppy boosters - only petco moving clinic (a bit of waiting, but always cheap, fast and caring for the pup).
My reptile (Mexican horned lizard) was seen by the best reptile/exotic Veterinarian. His name is Dr. Harkewicz and is the best in the whole San Francisco Bay area. He performed a complete exam and proposed in detail the best treatment for my extremely rare lizard. He understood that I needed a careful and custom approach than that of the more commonly kept reptiles. This is crucial and he understood this very well from the beginning. He shared very valuable tips and techniques for use with the prescribed medication as well. He showed much interest and concern for my lizard and me. Highly recommended ! !
Everyone here is so lovely and supportive, from the front desk staff to the vet techs to the vets themselves. They are sensitive to the fact that my dog is scared, so most of her vet visits take place with the vet and myself sitting on the floor, giving my dog treats. I have never felt rushed, even when I ask lots of questions, and my questions are always answered fully. In addition to the great in-person service, the vets also reply to email questions. My dog usually sees Dr. Adkins, whom I highly recommend, though since she's on leave, we also saw Dr Benjamin, who was also wonderful. The guinea pigs go to Dr Harkewicz, the exotic pets vet, who is wonderful about responding to emails and explaining what is going on with my pets. Love this place
This review is about an incident in June or maybe July of 2016. I used to live one block from this hospital. In the middle of the night, my 9 month old kitten had woken me up with his screaming and after 10 seconds he died. I threw on my shoes, ran dow the street and passed him to the emergency vets. Mayne 2 minutes from the moment he died to when they got him in their care. It isn't their fault that he died and I trust they did everything they could. The issue I have is when we asked the vet tech what happened, how come he couldn't be saved, she said "Maybe you didn't get here fast enough." Not only is that not true but even if it was, who the heck says that to a grieving cat mom? We've been sitting with that guilt ever since even though we know we couldn't have possibly been there any faster.
Having a good vet is a little like finding a good mechanic--it's important to trust the person you are bringing your pet to for care. I trust Dr. Amy Benjamin when she tells me what my cat needs. I never feel like I've been up-sold or mislead, and in fact Dr. Benjamin is always willing to work with me to figure out a plan of treatment we can work with. I don't trust anyone else as implicitly with my cat's health!
The entire staff always welcome me with a smile and warm acknowledgement. Our experience with the best dermatologist in town, Dr. Doering is a 10! Our dog, Mojo has allergies with certain food. His expertise keeps Mojo away from trouble. He will spend up to an hour with the dog if need be. I'm very satisfied with this place.
Such a warm and wonderful staff. Been in the Bay Area for 18 years and just found them. Love everyone to know about them so they don't have to wait as long to discover them!
This veterinarian clinic is amazing! My father is a veterinarian and recommends this place. I have brought ALL of my pets here (including reptiles) with excellent results. They saved my cat's life after a pitbull attacked him! I owe this place my life.
Berkeley Dog and Cat has been our first choice in care for our cats. They took excellent care of our first 2 cats for 15 years. When we decided to adopt 2 kittens, we went back to BDC for their care. One of our 4 month old kittens got sick and had to be interned for 2 days to receive care. Everyone who took care of our kitten went above and beyond, to the point of keeping her company when she meowed for attention. One of the nurses carried her with him when he made the rounds over night because she didn't want to be alone. They were all very sweet to her. We trust Berkeley Dog and Cat to keep our pets healthy and provide them with excellent care.
When my cat took a swipe at a bee and had a stinger in her paw that she wouldn't let me touch, I brought her in to Berkeley Dog & Cat, and they removed it in no time flat and didn't charge me for the service. For my cat's regular visits, I find the staff kind, thorough, and communicative.
I have been a long-time customer of Berkeley Dog and Cat Hospital. I received a card in the mail saying that I needed to bring one of my cats in for shots. I made the appointment. When I called today to reschedule the appointment, I asked what the appointment was for, since I had brought this cat in for her annual exam, shots, etc., just last August. After pushing back, I was told that my cat's record had not been updated since last August. He also said the records of my other cats had not been updated. This is unconscionable. This place charges high fees for everything, and until now I thought my pets were receiving high quality care. Not to mention that having to take my cat in for an appointment she does NOT need is a waste of my time.
This was our first visit to Berkeley Dog & Cat Hospital. There was a misunderstanding with our appointment and the staff was so apologetic and explained the procedure to us. We had a consultation with Dr. Joo re our dogs' teeth cleaning. She was very thorough, patient, funny, pleasant, honest, compassionate and made us feel at ease. We are so glad that our vet recommended BCCH for Tuna and Honey Pie's teething cleaning!
This place is awesome! They took really good care of my cat, didn't push unnecessary procedures on me and were clear about costs. Every one of the staff was great. Even my cat had a good time. I've never seen him so calm at a vet.
We, well our dogs and cat, have been patients at Berkeley Dog and Cat Hospital for over 30 years. The vets, techs, and office staff have travelled the journey with us through the lives of our late dogs, our late cat, and our current animal family. Everyone connected with the out-patient and in-patient parts of the hospital are highly skilled and intelligent--each knows her or his job and excels in it. This includes their having contributed to cutting edge research. But what trumps even their excellence as practitioners is that they are most compassionate, kind, and together they form a support system via which they have welcomed new pet family members into the fold and stood with us when pets were no longer here. They're wonderful and loving.
Berkeley Dog and Cat is the best! My pups have now seen three different doctors (vacations, days off, et cetera). Each time, I'm so sad they can't see their regular doctor; but the one who is filling in is just as good! I would trust every doctor there with my babies. They always take a lot of time examining them and informing me about what's going on with them, et cetera. On top of that, they are aware that not everyone has a million dollars to spend on their pets' health, even though we would love to do that. They give all options and help make the best decisions on your pet's behalf. I wouldn't go anywhere else!!
Wonderful place. All of our family--two moms, a pug, two Chinese Cresteds and a cat live Dr. Leah Isaacson. Even when we had to let our 17 year old cat go last year, she was amazing. We are moving away for two years, and it will be very difficult to find anyone like her in our new city....
Everyone is very compassionate and professional. I have never had a bad experience with a pet here.
Just took my cat in for the first time and I really appreciate their care and professionalism. They also serve a wide variety of animal needs - there were at least 4 other species (bearded dragons, birds, cats, and dogs) being seen while I was there and the staff was friendly and receptive to everyone. Thank you!
Very friendly and helpful staff
Great dig care.
This is our go to for emergency services. We had a bad experience at the other local emergency vet. Berkeley Dog & Cat was quick to help and professional, unlike the other place.
Chato, my senior dog, had a seizure at home. Within half an hour he had a second more severe seizure. I am relatively new to the Bay Area so we had not yet settled on a vet for all our four-legged household members. Berkeley Dog & Cat Hospital showed up first on the Google search so off I went. THEY WERE AWESOME. He was attended immediately and was going to stay overnight for observation.Dr. Kouch was outstanding in all that mattered - competent and caring. Unfortunately Chato had another seizure and Dr. Kouch laid out my options in the most honest and compassionate manner. It became clear that, given Chato's advanced age and the health issues that come with that, it was time to say goodbye. When I returned to be with Chato for the last moments, everyone was great. Dean at the receptionist desk offered me heartfelt condolences, a box of tissues and the opportunity to settle up payment so that when Chato was gone I could just leave. Dr. Kouch got on the floor with me, asked me how Chato and I came to be, told me I had done a good job, stayed with me for a few minutes after he was gone and gave me a hug. She was assuring and comforting the whole time. I still have three other critters at home and I think I just found their healthcare. Thank you all for an outstanding job.
Wonderful ❣️
Highly recommend Berkeley Dog & Cat Hospital for their efficient, fast, thorough, and compassionate individual attention.
Excellent veterinarian. Always available when needed with urgent care and emergency room services.
It's really 24/7, the vets are awesome, parking is not an issue and all the tech personal are also great. The only caveat is they are pricier than other places, but you get what you pay for. In case of an emergency, give them the heads up you're going for even better service.
Great place- efficient, caring- not the cheapest- but very high quality.. My cat has regular care here and also had a dead tooth removed. I feel confident taking my cat here!
I've never had to take my beloved guinea pigs to the vet before, so this was a new experience all around. I was very favorably impressed by the whole operation, from the folks at the front desk to the vet herself. Dr. "Sip", as she is known, handled my pigs with great kindness and confidence. She was thorough and thoughtful and spent a lot of time explaining and weighing what approaches to take to our pig situation. It was a great first-time pigs-to-the-vet experience!
I adopted a puppy that had Parvo. 2 months old and fighting for life. These vets and technicians are simple the very best. They cared for her 24 hours a day, until she was well again. So grateful for their skills and equipment.
Dr. Li and Dr Freeman are my go-to to docs but the emergency doc has been great too. I love this place. They may be more expensive but they are worth every penny. Period.
Love this place, staff and the care I recieve for my animals.
Our dog and cat have been patients at Berkeley Dog and Cat for several years. This week out of nowhere, our little chihuahua had a swollen eye. The folks who responded on the phone when we called were very helpful. Even though they didn't have an immediate appointment slot, they were very helpful in telling us when the best time would be to walk in and not have a long wait. The vet who we ended up seeing, Thomas Minturn, was very attentive and thorough...and the tech who assisted was very friendly and attentive as well. (She was very impressed with how patient our dog was with all the poking and prodding they put her through!) I would definitely recommend Berkeley Dog and Cat.
While this might not be the least expensive place to take your pet, this is the BEST place to take your pet! Open 24 hours, SUPER kind staff and doctors. I have only had wonderful experiences here with my menagerie and I highly recommend Berkeley Dog and Cat.
3 stars because they did take good care of her after a stroke 2 weeks ago. Disturbed no one can even call me back after 10hrs to tell me what to give my cat for hookworm. She is extremely frail and these worms are killing her, she can barely breathe. If you are that busy maybe you could have let me know so I could have tried elsewhere. Now it is past 6pm and every pharmacy is closed. Edit: did finally call back about 5 minutes after I left this comment. At least they can maybe fill a script by 9 PM.
My long-term vet for many years; I have complete confidence in them. We love Dr.Richard Benjamin, a real human being, but have been very happy lately with Dr. Amy Benjamin. I trust them with my dog: need I say more?
Dr. Jeff was very chill and thorough. He seems to have actual care for the animals he works with and took my concerns and observations seriously. He was very thorough and honest in explaining the prices of various treatments, and went step by step to explain what was going to happen and why. Overall great first impression here! Only downside is that $71 exam pricetag :[ But I suppose you get what you pay for!
The emergency service and more routine service visits have been wonderful in restoring my older Maine Coon Cat, Cabbie, to a comfortable, healthy state again. Even though he hates riding in a car, Cabbie has returned to good health after last week’s scary emergency visit last Saturday afternoon, followed by a return checkup with his new Veterinarian, Yu-Tin Lee, DVM. He liked being called “a sweet Kitty “.
My 13-year old pup decided to eat an entire bag of Greenies and looked like a snake who swallowed a muskrat. I called Berkeley Dog&Cat Hospital. They asked a couple of questions and determined that I should bring her in to induce vomiting. They were caring and thorough and provided my regular vet the information in a timely fashion.. They even gave me a pee pad for my brand new car so she didn't make a mess on the way home. I was really happy with their service, attitude, and pricing!
I have only had wonderful experiences with Berkeley Dog and Cat. Nancy was our vet this time, and she was wonderful. The staff team is thoughtful, kind, and very skilled at what they do. I have a rescue border collie with some quirky tendencies, so it puts us both at ease to be in such good hands. Highly recommend!
Beth the acupuncturist is a wizard. Her work with my 11 year old rottweiler/German Shepard mix, who's hips & arthritis were nearly debilitating was nothing short of magical. LEGIT
These guys are fantastic. I go here for my tortoise, and previously came to them for my skink. The front desk staff are nice and the vet techs are too, and the herp vet is an absolute expert. A gal at a local pet store a long time ago recommended them to me, and she was a reptile fanatic (house full of them) so after a while of trying out other exotic pet vets closer to home, I followed her advice and came here, and I'm so glad I did. I see loads of dogs and other animals every time I go there, so I suspect they have seen every pet in the book and can help everyone, but if you need an exotic pet specialist, most definitely come here.
Best vet in Berkeley. We've been here now with a very old dog and a very young one. They were great with each of them. Caring, knowledgable, and reasonably priced compared to other vets in the area. They're open 24 hours if you need them in a pinch. But, they are also just a great standard vet practice for routine things like vaccines. Stop reading reviews. You round your vet!
My dog had an ear infection which created a large hematoma on his ear. My regular vet recommended this place for emergency service. Dr. Nickerson was very good explaining what was needed prior to starting care. This allowed me to determine my price point and what I felt was necessay. Staff seemed cordial. Pricing was comparable to my usual vet. Total wait time to see the doc was 25 minutes (not to bad for no appoinrment).
Professional service, efficient front desk; a very caring support staff and tech assistants. We were so impressed w/ both Dr . Benjamins, but Amy has moved and her father's probably about to retire. However, our new vet, Dr. Sinai is terrific, too. We've been bringing our pets to BD andCat for over 10 years.
Been a client here for years. Expensive, but worth it! All their docs and staff are great.
Eve will be having oral surgery and I wanted to make sure that she is in good hands. That is definitely the case. Eve did not have a problem warming up to any of the staff. They were flexible with scheduling around my availability.
We saw Dr. Sinai regarding our conure (bird). She radiated competence, and we feel very confident in the diagnosis, treatment, and explanation of costs. The rest of the staff were also very helpful, and obviously know a lot about the care of birds.
The first word that comes to mind when I think of this place is "criminal." My dog and I had our absolute worst vet experience here. They put her through a surgery that didn't accomplish anything, among many other things including: overprescribing medication, not telling me she'd need to stay on steroids for life, misleading me about her condition and lying about the frequency they see those cases, the owner personally calling me to be insulting and tell me repeatedly that my pet will die (then mockingly inviting me to sue them), etc. They actually called me DURING the surgery to say the surgeon didn't want to remove the mass, then had the audacity to tell me this outcome was discussed before hand. Would they be calling while my dog was on the table if it was? If your pet has something going on, PLEASE find a specialist if it's serious, or at least get a second opinion before you let the crooks at BD&C do anything to your loved one. I thought they were great at first, too, after our initial emergency visit. Their confidence and advocacy for the operation convinced me, but then again these people know we're vulnerable when our pets our hurting. Even the staff at our regular vet have commented that they've "heard some things" about this place, and to add insult to injury, they charge more for literally everything. I'm happy to report that my dog is doing a hell of a lot better now that she's out of their care, thanks to a steep decrease in the steroids BD&C put her on (specialist took it down to about 25% with great results, didn't even recommend 2nd $100 med they prescribed) and a little research into supplements.
Super friendly, helpful service, no matter how busy they are. I can be sure my little helper is always getting the best quality care. Also, they have expanded services available, so chances are if your animal needs to see a specialist you can bring them here to see one who works with and can discuss your animal's care with your regular vet. I've never used the emergency services, but it is a comfort to know that they are available 24/7 for walk-ins. Possibly as a result of always being open for emergency services, they have well-pet and check-up appointments available at a much wider variety of days and times than I would expect from a regular vet.
I love their service and the way the treat the animals I really suggest u to go here if ur dog isnt feeling well or if something is wrong.
Brought my cat in for a broken toe nail and he was given convenia. The tech just said "give him an antibiotic shot" without telling me what it is, risk vs benefit. Absolutely no suggestions of other possible options, WHICH THERE ARE. And no discussion about price breakdown before the treatment. They just went ahead and decided what they want to give my pet, then at the end handed us the bill $200. Later on I read more about convenia, it can cause serious anaphylaxis, just like how any abx can, they all carry that risk. But they gave my cat the shot and it lasts In his system for 2 months. If he has any bad or even life threatening reaction to this abx, there is NO WAY of getting it out of him. I mean a broken toe, could've given him oral Abx (i never knew until i read another blog written by a vet, after the fact that my cat was already given the injection) which is safer and if anything were to happened it clears out of his system within hours. Thankfully my cat was fine, but my feeling about this place has changed. Also, when I asked any question at all, staff seem very deffenssive, like I'm challenging their knowledge or sth. I just want to know exactly what you were giving my pets BEFORE you do so. If you go see a doctor wouldn t you want to ask about possible side effects and what the name of the med is before he prescribe it to You? Also, they use MLV vaccines their for pets, which is good, but they do not give us what the brand of the company is, unless I asked. Again, you gotta ask literally for every bit of info that is considered a necessity in a consultation that I pay $75 for. If I don't ask I got no info. Also, if I ask them to give me the price breakdown of the costs before any treatment being given, I get looked down upon. You shop and you care for how much you pay for, just common sense and I don't need to treated that way. I called 3 other vets in the bay area and they all offered to give price breakdowns before anything is charged on top of the consultation fee. It's not that rude to ask for the price of what you're paying for right? Or am I just rude asking that?
I love the Berkeley Dog and Cat Hospital! When I moved to the area a few years ago I knew I would need to find a vet for my dog and cat but its always tricky to find someone you can trust. I got a recommendation from a family member and Matilda and Nadine (my little fur babies) have been going since.
Vet Dr Barbara Wood, took plenty of time was very thorough with my cat who is in kidney failure. They have in house everything, ultra sound xray etc. They also do emergency 24 hour. I was impressed with how they cared for my cat. Thank you.
I have been a client of Berkeley Dog and Cat since moving to the East Bay 8 years ago. Their doctors are caring and top notch and would want nothing less for my fur babies
Such s lovely clean place. We showed up for an emergency for our dog late at night and they took very good care of us - didn't wait too long either. The vet who was doing the night shift there as very knowledgeable and good. Staff are friendly. I was expecting a big bill but didn't get one. Dog is in his way to recovery. Thanks so much!
Saved my dog Luna's life.and I could afford it....they are very nice
A very empathetic and caring staff.
They are courteous, professional and provide a very high quality of service. They like the animals and like what they are doing! And, they are ethical-both in care and in billing! I would recommend they highly-in particular Dr. Hancock and his assistant Kristie.
