My first review was not very positive...not because of Dr Rice at all. Dr Rice is a very rational and knowledgeable vet... and open. I would recommend him. His front staff was nice to me on this last visit but it was a very very rocky start with her. In fact i talked to my neighbor that said she passed on this vet after calling in and talking with her. I guess the moral of the story is not to judge a book by the cover...better yet maybe some bedside manners and compassion training for her. Again, Dr Rice is worth getting through the gate keeper.

This review applies to rodents only. Do not take your pet rodent here for surgeries. I refused to do so myself after a simple phone call setting up an appointment for my pet rat to be neutered for a couple reasons. the first was minor, but still a red flag: Dr. Rice does not have much experience with rodents. The second red flag is what made me call the appointment off: they wished for me to not feed him the night before the surgery due to him going under anesthesia. At first glance, or to someone who is not knowledgeable of rats, this would seem like a silly reason to abort the appointment. However, the reason why you deprive other animals of food prior to surgery is to prevent them from vomiting. Rats cannot vomit, they are incapable. This begs the question, if they do not know that rats cannot vomit, what else do they not know? Would they even know to give special attention to their teeth at a basic checkup?

I was more afraid than my dog. Teeth cleaning and removal as well as fatty growth removal. Staff was amazing and Dr Rice took time with me after. My dog has a genetic clotting disorder as well as a bad heart so I was terrified. Tracy called to update me and let me know she was doing ok. Also she didnt mind me calling again after that. Just really amazing people.

Dr. Rice is the absolute best - extremely knowledgeable, great with our two aging shelter dogs, and explains things in terms I can understand. Tracy is on top of everything in the office - RX's, weights, bills, phone - but most importantly Daisy and Bear LOVE her. That would be enough, but on top of it all, the med techs are wonderful - caring, smart, and thorough. There aren't enough stars for me to really tell you how great the people are at The Family Pet Vet. I recommend them unconditionally.

This may not be Bella's favorite place to go but it should be as everyone is so good to her and know her well. We have lived many places and been to many vets but this practice is like family. Trust and competence are number one and both are assumed here.

Awesome. My dog Shadow (a medium-sized Australian Kelpie) had a spot that looked like a sty on his eyelid. I watched it closely for about a week and when I decided that it was becoming worse instead of better I called to set up an appointment. The clinic got Shadow in very fast. Like the next day. And although it was an extremely rare occurrence in dogs, it turns out that it was a stye. I got to sit in the room with shadow and help him stay calm and they did an awesome job! It turned out that there was this piece of what looked like a leaf about the size of my pinky nail down here below his eye on the inside of his inner eyelid but they got it out without even having to give him any medications or put any drops in his eyes. But since they had found that they went ahead and took precautionary measures by putting some drops in his eyes and taking an extra look. There was nothing else there but it made me feel better knowing that we had double-checked. The entire procedure only lasted maybe 15 minutes and they gave him a treat afterwards. They gave me some ointment to put on his stye, it was gone completely in less than a week. Awesome place and awesome people!! I would recommend to anyone that loves their pet to take them here for the best care possible.

Wish we could do 6 stars instead of 5!! If you love your pets and want the very best care, go to Family Pet! We moved to Holiday Island from Texas in late 2007 with 6 rescued, geriatric dogs, (5 large and 1 small dog). Dr. Rice and all of his staff have been very caring and compassionate through all our dogs' health issues. Dr. Rice was spot on with each diagnosis and treatment, including surgery and follow-up. Also, Dr. Rice is the only vet around with Ultrasound which enabled him to find and surgically remove tumor on gall bladder of our large Catahoula Hound. Through the years Dr. Rice and staff compassionately saw us through the loss of each of the original 6 geriatric dogs. Dr. Rice also successfully did knee surgery on both back legs of our current Lab mix who loves to go for walks. We are so thankful Family Pet is there for our dogs!!
