REVIEWS OF UNC Charlotte IN North Carolina

UNC Charlotte is a beautiful, modern suburban campus minutes from Uptown Charlotte. The school is driven towards commuters, which I am, so there is not a lot of available parking or on-campus housing. The professors are awesome and care about you for the most part. If you’re in a competitive major like engineering or nursing, I’ve heard the professors are kind of weak at teaching. Overall, I love UNC Charlotte and the people. I would recommend to anyone living in the Charlotte area, but wouldn’t encourage anyone to attend from somewhere far off.

Tim Strauss

What a great Collage!! Directors Honored all that Graduated with an announcement at this years ceramony. Also showed concern for those in there care 4 years sit down, 6years sit down 10, 20 years to graduation, WHAT PERSISTENCE!!! Nice job Miss! Very organized well done!!

J. Vereen

Heard that they had Great Psychology and Education Major Programs here at UNC Charlotte. But my Aunt and Mom did not like the Health Administration Programs. But some students and proffesors are a little racist by saying the n word. But without that UNC Charlotte is a beautiful modern good school.

Mykel Williams

Terrible services for students. Campus police is very rude and disrespectful. PATS is not helpful for any kind of parking.

Ashley Cline

Horrible school, faculty in student aid does not care about you or your families well being. Will find any excuse to charge you, and drop financial aid. Absolutely profit driven, and absolutely regret going here. Staff are insensitive I have had advising from 5 departments over my 5 years. All were horrible. Because of this I am being forced to pay a fee of 1400, and no one can tell me what it is for. Avoid UNCC at all costs.

kaledev

Best University in NC, but I'm biased.

Garrett Fuchs

Out of 5 classes 4 are in online textbooks, this is absolutely unacceptable. This school is filled with lazy teachers who cannot teach nor create their classes. This entire college relies completely on online textbook manufacturers to create the courses. I came to college to learn from experts not pad the wallets of Pearson and Cengage.

I am very fed up with this school. There are not enough professors for the student population...classes get full so quickly and that leaves so many students with nothing left to take. My gradation date keeps getting pushed further and further away because of this and I know for sure I'm not the only one because many other students I know are having this problem. I'm only registered for 1 class next semester because everything else got full!! It's not even worth going to school for one class and I'm going to lose my financial aid unless I can be a full-time student next semester. I see that UNCC has money for construction and a football team but not more professors...I see where their priorities are. I'm seriously considering leaving this school so that I can graduate before I turn 30...because that's what it's looking like at this point.

All around just not a good place. UNCC's 4 yr graduation rate is 26%. I'll outline every aspect of this school, listed in no particular order: Safety - University City generally isn't a very safe place. I wouldn't say I feel unsafe on campus (except at night) but I don't feel safe. There's been plenty of hit-and-run's, shootings, robberies, and rapes on and off campus. Just recently there was a shootout and a few rapes on campus. The university has to notify you of these incidents, and you'll be getting e-mails about it all the time if you go here. Also, people steal rims in the parking deck. I wish I was joking. Location - The area is okay. It definitely doesn't have a college vibe, but there are a few things you can do. I won't lie, Charlotte is pretty inferior compared to other cities. They have the light rail now so you can easily get off campus and go to uptown or North Davidson. Both areas are just...okay. If you're not eating or going to a bar, you'll be bored. There's shops and a mall not too far from campus. Walkability - Awful. It's one of the worst things. The school is basically on a mountain, and they did not have walkability in mind when designing the place. A slow bus system doesn't help either. The campus is huge, and they task you with unrealistically making it from one building to another in 15 minutes. I want to know how someone could go from Duke Centennial to Fretwell. Get ready to be panting. Parking - This is the WORST thing about UNCC. There are NO parking spots. This is a highly realistic scenario: come to campus 30 minutes before class in hopes of finding a spot, not find a spot after looking through 6 floors of one deck, go to another deck, find a rare spot. You are now late for class, and you have to walk from a deck far to your class. It doesn't help that PATS has NO mercy. They will charge you for the most minor violations. ALSO, TO EVEN PARK ON CAMPUS YOU NEED TO PAY FOR A $400 PASS. AND THAT DOESN'T GUARANTEE A SPOT. Their idea of a solution is building 200 more spots. Hilarious. Academics - It's eh. I'll give UNCC that. I'm a student in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. I've taken some classes in the Belk College of Business, too. It's not mind-blowing education. A lot of professors have accents. I mean, a LOT of them. And you can't understand what they're saying. The registration system is AWFUL. It's awful. There are NO courses available. Psychology and business students, beware. Every course is taken the day you sign up. People have to spend extra semesters into this money-pit school because of that fact. STEM students BEWARE. Chemistry and physics have been on probation many times. Too many students fail the courses and take them for a second or third time. There is MASS grade deflation in these departments. They are not even listing the professors for chemistry classes anymore upon registration. They don't want to you have the choice. It's absolutely unacceptable. Also, they make you take LBST classes at UNCC. They're the most easy and useless class. You learn nothing from them, it's basically a waste of money. Dining - The dining halls are just...despicable. SoVi is basically dog food trying to look appealing. People joke and say "thanks to Petco for sponsoring tonight's dinner". The Panda Express on campus is awful. If you get the noodles or rice, you'll see how they mix old and new. Subway doesn't taste fresh. I love Chick-fil-A, but the one on campus tastes funny. School Spirit - Doesn't exist. One trip to UNCC and you'll see everyone decked out in State, UNC, and Duke gear. Athletics - A joke. Doesn't need to be mentioned. Employment - Hilarious. Unless you are top of your class in Computing or Business, expect nothing.

Visitors have to PAY for parking? WTF??? I have been to dozens of colleges and universities across this nation and NEVER ONCE have I had to pay as a visitor. I went to UNCC today, with my infant, to go to the Admissions office and I am hit with a sign that says "Visitors must pay at exit". WHAT? I don't carry cash with me. But who knows if they take credit cards because their nice, large, thorough sign fails to say anything else. I cant pull over anywhere. There is no one around to ask. So I left. UNCC wasted 50 miles of my gasoline and 90 minutes of my time. Visitors paying for parking........ how absurd is that? As if this place needs the extra coin.

Ashley

Misinformation from a financial aid rep in the office is the reason why I was taken out of my classes, after the date of the final payment cut off for the semester. She informed me I would not be dropped if I was still enrolled past midnight. I got dropped 2 days later... I will need to go through the whole process all over. The professors and advisors raise my rating from a 1 to a 3.

Joseph Stewart

Over priced at the games I don't understand $6 for a tiny pizza that's just outrageous.

Robert Garland

I enjoy that the university is so close to downtown Charlotte. The campus is extremely nice, and the faculty at this campus are very knowledgeable, but if anyone is planning on majoring in accounting at this school you will have to take your last accounting credit for the CPA education requirement else where. It is the only university in North Carolina that does this, which they probably do so that they can get more people to go into the Macc program, which is in a building in downtown Charlotte. Other than this one accounting curriculum weakness this school has everything else that you would need. They have a lot of large companies who who recruit from this school. since it is in Charlotte, the banks have a massive presence at this school.

Loved UNCC! My wife is alumn and I have had friends attend. Its a great school especially for transfer students.

Jonathan Hayes

Wow! What a beautiful, modern campus. And in a few months, the light rail will connect UNCC to NoDa and Uptown. UNC Charlotte is the place to be.

Deana Celaj

first of all, im transferring as soon as i get the chance. this school has cheated me out of so much money, it’s ridiculous. when i first applied to this school, i’ll admit, i didn’t know what i was doing. i applied for housing on campus because i wasn’t sure if i had any other choices at the time. well i send in a cancellation request the day it was due and find that i need to send in appeal letters to the department of housing so that they would CONSIDER giving back my $3000. i sent appeal after appeal. three, to be exact. all got denied. basically, paying for a dorm that i don’t even live in. the education is average. and i mean average, nothing more. parking? crazy expensive and not even guaranteed. everything is so overly expensive for what you’re actually getting. bio major here not even taking chem or physics here at uncc just cause both programs are under fire. i can’t wait to get out of here, seriously.

Screw these people and their opinions, this is a fine school. If you think it's so bad then why didn't you go somewhere else with different requirements. It's not Harvard and it's not as hard to get into as Harvard, not a coincidence

Excellent Research Environment

The longer I’ve been out of school the more I regret my time at UNC Charlotte. Often people regret going to college because they accumulated a lot of debt and/or picked a major without a clear career path. Neither is the case for me. I had a STEM major and made decent grades (>3.5 GPA) and graduated with no debt. My dissatisfaction is purely with the quality of the university and the education, which is piss poor. As far as I’m concerned they might as well be running a scam. 18 year old kids, who don’t know better and don’t have the context to evaluate the quality of their education, come to university because conventional wisdom tells them that they can acquire skills that will make them valuable and effective in a career. I’m sure the educators at UNCC are well aware of this. However, they have no interest in teaching the students skills, or in clarifying to the students that they won’t be learning anything useful. They are content to allow kids to hold those misconceptions so that they will continue to enroll and fork over large sums of money. This is unethical. It wasn’t until I was ~3/4ths of the way through my degree that I came to understand enough about what I was studying to realize that the so-called “education” I was paying for was worthless. At this point I figured I was better off finishing and getting out, which is what I did. The fact is UNCC hands out grades in exchange for money. If you pay, show up, and turn in anything at all when your assignments are due you will receive the grades. The diploma is just a participation trophy, if not a receipt. It’s no indication of any knowledge, skills, or hard work. If you want to do nothing, learn nothing, and just be handed a degree then this is the school for you. A note to the professors: you need to educate your students. You need to teach them the sort of things they come to school believing they will learn. If you have no plan to do that, you need to communicate that to students early, before enrollment if possible. It’s true that there are some things you have to learn on the job, but in technology fields learning hard skills outside of the industry is laughably easy. If you have a computer you can get started. Teach your students how to do things. Evaluate them on their ability and grade them accordingly. Don’t create curricula based on material that’s worthless outside the classroom. Don’t just hand out grades to anyone who pays you.

Eric Williams

If you have a lot of money, or you're a research student or engineer, you probably won't have a problem with this school. The school looks very nice on the outside, but as a student, I hated it. The dorms were god awful. Their elevators did not work on the first day of move in. At one point they did not have enough rooms in the highrises for the students, and had to house students in the commons rooms and blackout the windows. The Cafeteria food was always questionable. Cold and pretty unimaginative. Facilities and services always closed down early. There was hardly anything open on the weekends. Not to mention there is barely any means of going anywhere outside of campus if you don't have a car. Speaking of cars, parking services is ridiculous and incompetent. They wrote me up even when I had my parking tag right on the windshield, positioned properly where it was supposed to be, and another time I got a ticket after the semester had ended! This school just looks for ways to nickel and dime students. They're department chairs and coordinators are a bunch of fools who can't manage their jobs. And when they make mistakes, you are the one who will probably end up paying for it.

It is the time to write something before the graduation. 1) School looks nice, 95% of all the building were decorated with red bricks and looks new from the out site. 2) Parking is horrible, cops are nasty. they like giving innocent people a yellow ticket and hard to appeal.(I have appealed in other much larger school without any BS.) 3) Professor are qualified overall, however, some faculty are quite below the average. I go to Belk business college. So deal with some hard-to-deal faculty. Some of them are from the Advising center on the 3rd building. They hardly can help you, instead, they like to say "try to send another email/try some other time" Total Bullshit, I have tried 5 times to find the person already! 4) Arrangement of the campus building is a failure. Low efficiency use of space and some building like COVD building's designer is a brainless guy. It has 2 floors total, but on the map, you can see 5 floors which can make you spending half an hour to find a teacher's office. 5) Gym is a joke. Everybody knows that. As well as the greasy food, Sandwich sandwich sandwich... 6) Some professor's lecture during the whole semester is like a crap, so try to learn something outside the classroom. Conclusion, I have learnt something from this school and I need to learn more from outside it. Glad to make some friends in this school. 3 stars if you live near charlotte area.

I would give a solid 2.5 stars. I've spent 4 years here and I've loved a lot and hated a lot. The university is very liberal, me if you're not then you may have some problems. The parking extorts money from students and faculty, but what else is new. But other than. A few select professors, my professors have been great, down to earth and humble. The campus is always kept looking nice other than the construction. IFC has Greek life by the nads and cops always patrol so go off campus to have your fun.

I moved here from Tampa, knowing very well I could have gone to USF but the degree requirements for my major(Chemistry) seemed more appealing since it required more classes that would benefit me in the long run. BIG MISTAKE! Although, the math program is amazing since I have learned so much in my math classes and the teachers do a very good job teaching their students with respect and providing tests with realistic expectations. The science program for physics and chemistry need a lot of improvement. Starting with gen chem, I had a terrible semester with an adjunct faculty that did nothing but insult us in class and treat us all as if we were children. she never came to class prepared and taught on a whim. when a student asked a question she either laughed at them for not knowing the answer or became frazzled since she couldn't explain the answer and got angry with us. I passed luckily but my class mate had to take this class 3 times and still only received a C. There are other great professors but they teach lower level courses and they obviously need to freshen up their department. the building is outdated and needs a lot of work. the equipment in lab is always broken and useless so when we are graded on the purity of our product it is hard to pass with an acceptable grade. I love my advisor but my friends have had poor advisors so, again, I think the department just needs more youthful faculty members that can better respect and connect with the students . NOW, the BIGGEST disappointment is the financial office. this schools fees cost more than our tuition! AND my tuition is an estimate looking at my credits accumulated rather than knowing what each credit costs therefore I do not know how my funds are dispersed. for example, I dropped one class and was billed $700 I asked for a statement on the dispersion of my funds they only provided the students fees which were all individually shown yet my credits per class were not. they just showed my tuition all together so I do not know exactly the cost of the class nor do I know how it was paid. this semester I was refunded $39 for my FAFSA but then later billed $1..yes, $1 without an explanation. I had to email the school and they explained that it was a convenience fee,..funny I did not have that the last two semesters I was there. this school needs to reassess their priorities. I will not be getting my masters here since there are hardly any resources for the science majors due to poorly funded labs. you get what you pay for I guess.

Tony Iannone

I’m sitting in Cameron Hall co-facilitating a class that helps teachers think more about the teaching of writing and what it means to be a writer themselves. The room I’m in is very small...which is perfect for the group that I am with. The class I’m co-facilitating is meant to be intimate (quaint, special) and this room really helps project that. One reason I have not rated the room higher than 3 stars is that the air conditioning is extremely cool...which you would think...on a hot summer day like today would be welcome. This just in...there is such a thing as being too cold.

Nothing but bad experiences here from the get go. From the shops to the classroom I was always disappointed. Student body is grossly immature and undereducated, seen in both the classroom and work assignments on campus. Teachers missing numerous classes (not excited about paying for a class the teacher can't show up to). Seems to be no standard of baseline for faculty. Taking my way too easy A's to Clemson to be a part of a student body focused on educational standards. Would NOT ever recommend UNCC.

Lisa Harris

Visited today with my daughter, it's a beautiful campus.

dayton floyd

I've been here for three years now and I must say that despite the few flaws, the university is quite enjoyable. There are all sorts of things to do to get involved in campus life; there are comedy shows, concerts, events, and sports events on campus. There are also plenty of chances to become noteworthy outside the university. The Solar Decathlon for instance really was a massive event that was featured on news stations nationwide. The new buildings are amazing, as are the plans for the upcoming buildings around campus. Don't let the negative reviews of the few sway your decision, visit the campus and determine for yourself. Be sure to talk to the students as we are friendly enough and can provide plenty of insight into what the college holds.

Angela McNair

I spend more time looking for parking than in the classroom learning. The struggle to find parking alone will ruin your learning experience. A lot of the professors have strong accents. The staff at the parking and transportation services are rude— they will hang up on you after keeping you waiting on hold & no it’s not an accident. The students wear other school mascots and apparel (App, NCSU, UNC, ECU, etc). It feels predominantly hybrid as it is hard to get involved in school activities since the football team is garbage and parking is expensive. Avoid the university health insurance as the price rises each semester ($1200 in Fall 2017) and the copays and deductibles are ridiculous. I never felt cheated out of an education until I came to UNC Charlotte. Please please please do your research when choosing a university as your learning environment is pivotal to your experience.

A great University in the Charlotte, NC area. As a former Student Body Senator for College of Computing and Informatics, I was honored to have served some of the greatest students on our campus. I am confident that after the construction is completed, the sports programs start winning games on a regular basis, and the pride and spirit of the student body gets better, you will experience the most exciting college campus in the UNC system and in the state of North Carolina. The learning experience is what you make it. If you think success, this is the place to come claim it. Love the staff, professors, and the student body at UNC Charlotte....GO NINERS!!!

As a parent of a student let me say I deeply regret placing my student in this University. My student has received terrible services from his advisors and he has continually had the university change advisors with no continuity between them. Because of the bad advice from the advising Department it will cost him an additional semester to take a 1 Language class that he could have taken his freshman year had he known his major required it and that his high school language classes did not cover it. My student also has had a continual battle with getting classes because they fill up so fast from lack of professors. the school accepts too many students with not enough teaching resources for all of them just so they can fund thier numerous non-academic programs such as a football team and buildings that they do not populate with teachers to satisfy the needs of the students that need these classes. This leads 2 additional funds for the University because students cannot graduate in 4 years and must pay exorbitant additional fees due to the extension of their enrollment when they could have finished much earlier.overall we have been very dissatisfied with the professors who some speak terrible English and as a result make the class difficult and the advising that our student has received. This University is also full of very left-wing liberal professors who do their best to indoctrinate the students into their left-wing secular way of thinking. Thethe school has been terrible for my student spiritually as there is very little if any support here for that as opposed to my other student who is at another University and has prospered spiritually and received lots of support if I had it to do all over again we would have definitely sent our student somewhere else.

I love the teachers and would give more than a one star but since the parking services are so crooked and extort money out of their students with ridiculous citations; I cannot. Carol Ross was simply rude. Talks over you and won't let you get a word in or finish a sentence and defiantly will not listen to what you have to say. I mean for goddness sakes most of us are broke college students and have a lot more to worry about than getting charged a ridiculous amount after paying over 500$ for the permit. SOME GUY on the INTERNET

Went to the College of Engineering here, plenty of opportunities to get involved in research, plenty of good professors. Maybe it doesn't have the funding of the "more reputable" universities - but that makes UNCC incredibly efficient at producing research results. Student population knows how to turn up *when necessary*. Not really a party school - they get shut down pretty quick. Chancellor takes pride on making himself available to the student population (but realize you're talking to a busy man, don't just e-mail his secretary to complain). "It is what you make it" - I've heard this a lot at this university. That's generally true in life - so it shows people are learning. Quality school - not MIT - but local and quality. Take it seriously and get serious results. If you don't.... well don't blame us. We done told you.

I went to UNCC back in the mid to late 90s. All I can say is if I had a time machine, I'd love to go back. I met several life-long friends that I continue to hang out with to this day. It's amazing how much the campus has changed over the years. The last time I was there (for the first football game) I almost got lost. I received a fine arts degree and have made a career out of digital printing and design. According to other reviews, people still like to go home on the weekends. That was also the case when I attended, but for the brave that stay around the school during the weekend, more power to you. That's where the fun is really at. Also, I'm hearing that students aren't attending the football games and the ones that are, tend to leave early. All I have to say to that is, just be glad you have a football team. We were so sports deprived back in the day, we would go to all the basketball and baseball games. Good times!

my experience In America

The admission office needs work. I was thinking about transferring UNCC to one of the health programs after working hard to get my GPA above a 3.3. I came to talk to an admission advisor about possibly transferring to UNCC. The admission advisor before even looking at my G.P.A tells me the program is tough to get into and you need a high GPA. Then, basically told me I would not qualify, I thought to myself, "WOW this place has no motivation for the students." Maybe the fact I was a black male she told me this, so I walk over to the Nursing build in the snow hoping for better news, and lucky I found an admission counselor willing to help me. I do not think this would be the school for me; this experience left me with a bad feeling about the University progression.

I can't vouch for attending this school as a student, but I can warn you if you're looking for a job here. In short; DON'T! If you get in the wrong department with the wrong boss, you can kiss any sort of promotion goodbye, because a lazy boss who has you do their job for them will not allow you to progress. They'll find "cost-managing" ways to cut your pay; my husband's pay got cut almost forty percent over the years. The parking costs dearly; it was quite a chunk out over every single paycheck. UNCC nearly bled us dry! And I hear now that insurance premiums for the UNC university system have jumped over 200 percent! I'm guessing pretty soon employees will be paying for the privilege to work here. I'm just glad my husband is no longer one of them!

Nothing gets done. I lived beside construction for a year and watched the workers do nothing, and now the dorm I'm meant to be in still isn't ready, which should have been. There's a limit to how long this should take but somehow it's still being pushed back.

Parking sucks, there is NEVER any classes for popular majors (Psych, business, etc), overpriced books. However, the staff/teachers are nice, the campus is always looks nice, kept up, and clean. The food is decent but I wish there was more choices to choose from and the events are always fun.

Let's be honest, there are good things and bad things to this school. While the department the major I have is very small and thus more personal with you, especially with advising, the bigger departments like business are very impersonal with you, and hold rather strict barrings on until you complete the, to be honest, useless general education the college forces on you, though that is the case anywhere in America. It is almost arrogant in how they dismiss the ideas and opinions of the students in favor of their own. They are also known for their excessive penny pinching. With the prices on campus being outrageous, they also hold strict rulings for housing and parking, giving you hefty bills if you mess up on even the slightest infraction. Overall, the grand and upcoming productions they are doing with the school, such as the football field and new dorms and buildings, do not help the general student population much. Now, with this said, there are good things to this place. For one, in smaller departments, you get a generally more personal and kinder attention to you and your college career. With my department at least, as long as you show the ability, they help you get the classes you want and need. Also, at least on campus, school spirit runs deep with the green and gold. There are more than enough events to bolster this said school patriotism, and can eventually come to rival other schools. Also, while some professors have a tendency to stuff beliefs down the student's throats, others can be thought inspiring, and can be interesting and even fun to go to classes sometimes. However, the lousy administration still lingers over these benefits, and hampers the overall quality of the school. If they fixed that problem, they would be a good school. However, with that said problem, I can only recommend it, as a current student, as a mediocre to slightly above average at best school to prospective students. To them, I would look at your options and see if you want to come here. I do not regret the choice of coming to this school, but I cannot ignore its blatant and crippling flaws.
