The University of Michigan (UM, U-M, U of M, or UMich), often simply referred to as Michigan, is a public research university in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The University of Michigan is the state's oldest university, founded in 1817 in Detroit, Michigan as the Catholepistemiad, or University of Michigania, 20 years before the Michigan Territorybecame a state. It moved to Ann Arbor in 1837 onto 40 acres (16 ha) of what is now known as Central Campus. Since its establishment in Ann Arbor, the university campus has expanded to include more than 584 major buildings with a combined area of more than 34 million gross square feet (780 acres; 3.2 km2) spread out over a Central Campus and North Campus, two regional campuses in Flint and Dearborn, and a Centerin Detroit. The University was a founding member of the Association of American Universities. Considered one of the foremost research universities in the United States, Michigan is classified as one of 115 Doctoral Universities with Very High Research by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.[9] As of 2017, 24 Nobel Prize winners, 6 Turing Award winners and 1 Fields Medalist have been affiliated with University of Michigan. Its comprehensive graduate program offers doctoral degrees in the humanities, social sciences, and STEM fields(Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) as well as professional degrees in architecture, business, medicine, law, pharmacy, nursing, social work, public health, and dentistry. Michigan's body of living alumni comprises more than 540,000 people, one of the largest alumni bases of any university in the world. Besides academic life, Michigan's athletic teams compete in Division I of the NCAA and are collectively known as the Wolverines. They are members of the Big Ten Conference The University of Michigan was established in Detroit on August 26, 1817 as the Catholepistemiad, or University of Michigania, by the governor and judges of Michigan Territory..

The campus is nice. There are some decent professors here. However, many professors blatently promote their liberal political views during lectures and belittle opposing viewpoints, which i find unprofessional. Also, most classes require you to read the book, listen to a professor talk for about 2 hours, and complete a multitude of busywork. This is not really education. Its called reading and it's usually free. WHERE IS THE PASSION? Why is learning so boring here!? Dazzle me, please.... i'm waiting to be inspired. This entire school feels insipid and smug to me, but what do i know bout educatin' anyway?

The University of Michigan was established in Detroit on August 26, 1817 as the Catholepistemiad, or University of Michigania, by the governor and judges of Michigan Territory. Judge Augustus B. Woodwardspecifically invited The Rev. John Monteithand Father Gabriel Richard, a Catholic priest, to establish the institution. Monteith became its first President and held seven of the professorships, and Richard was Vice President and held the other six professorships. Concurrently, Ann Arbor had set aside 40 acres (16 ha) in the hopes of being selected as the state capital. But when Lansing was chosen as the state capital, the city offered the land for a university. What would become the university moved to Ann Arbor in 1837 thanks to Governor Stevens T. Mason. The original 40 acres (160,000 m2) was the basis of the present Central Campus. This land was once inhabited by the Ojibwe (Chippewa), Odawa (Ottawa), and Bodewadimi (Potawatomi) Native tribes and was obtained through the Treaty of Fort Meigs. In 1821, the university was officially renamed the University of Michigan. The first classes in Ann Arbor were held in 1841, with six freshmen and a sophomore, taught by two professors. Eleven students graduated in the first commencement in 1845. By 1866, enrollment had increased to 1,205 students, many of whom were Civil War veterans. Women were first admitted in 1870. James Burrill Angell, who served as the university's president from 1871 to 1909, aggressively expanded U-M's curriculum to include professional studies in dentistry, architecture, engineering, government, and medicine. U-M also became the first American university to use the seminar method of study. Among the early students in the School of Medicine was Jose Celso Barbosa, who in 1880 graduated as valedictorian and the first Puerto Rican to get a university degree in the United States. He returned to Puerto Rico to practice medicine and also served in high-ranking posts in the government.

In the first place, Michigan remains a top-rated public university. It has many stellar departments, and your degree will open doors anywhere from social work to engineering to medicine. When I was there, the campus was nice and spacious. There are also many extra-curricular opportunities including football, Greek life and volunteering. However, Michigan is not for everyone. If you like a more intimate, hometown college feel, you may not prefer this school. On the other hand, if you are a self-starter and a second-generation college student, you will do fine. Navigating U of M's serpentine class scheduling and financial aid systems as a first-generation college student would have been a nightmare. As an out-of-state student, I regret not seeking more grants and scholarships, otherwise I had a great experience at U of M.

Lovely Michigan campus, beautiful area.

The University of Michigan, or "Michigan", surpassed all of my expectations. When enrolling, I knew that it was highly ranked among Engineering, Medicine, Law and Business programs within the US. Even with this knowledge, the facilities, resources and overall character of Michigan blew me away. The professors I had were outstanding. They were obviously quite knowledgeable, but they were also personable. Having a professor that is regarded as an “expert” in his/her field/industry, or seeing them on the discovery channel, really makes going to class easy. BUT, my favorite part of Michigan is, I guess, the entire package. The campus drew me in much more quickly that I even anticipated. I met people from all over the world. I had easy access to all kinds of technology. There were too many extra-curricular activities to keep up with. Ann Arbor had such a diverse feel in regards to scenery, food and people. The independent, family-owned stores and diners are still things I try to hit when I return to A2. Michigan has amazing museums with international exhibits right on campus (wish I would have taken more advantage of these while there). The campus and city have different 'vibes' depending on where you go. You can go to the arb and feel like you are in some rural, forested hideaway miles from a city. You can go to North Campus and get the modern, technological atmosphere or stay on Central and enjoy the classic scenery. My years at Michigan were not only challenging and fun, they gave me opportunities that have led me to where I am today. I easily received internships and had numerous job offers right out of school (in fact, I didn’t even need to go to job fairs my last year as I had a job lined up prior to starting). Life “roadblocks” have been pretty scarce and I attribute much of this to my degree. I still meet people wherever I go wearing the Block M and always hail the “Go Blue” to them, usually sparking a nice chat about Michigan. I highly recommend Michigan to anyone from anywhere from any background. GO BLUE

The one and only reason I transfered to U of M was because at least 2 or 3 of their financial aid Representatives LIED TO ME telling me that my tuition would be free because I was eligable for the "Go Blue Guarantee". After starting classes they we're about to charge me late fees for not paying my tuition so I asked the financial aid representatives about it and they said if I payed my tuition they would refund it back to me when they finish processing my paperwork which never happened. After paying my tuition they told me I was not eligible for the go Blue guarantee so I was never refunded my tuition. When I called to complain they denied the entire situation. By the way, in my experience taking 60+ credits between two Universities and a community college the only significant difference between a University and a community colleges is the price.

Fantastic people here, guy just gave me fifty cents so I could park when I asked him if I could trade five pennies for a nickel for the meter. Thanks guy!! (The education offered at this University is also arguably the finest in Michigan)

Jonathan Mei

Great atmosphere, strong academics, but wifi for students is unusable at times. May get attacked by the occasional squirrel. Dogs on campus are nice. Coffee is a necessity.

Jason Knight

It is a good hospital for serious injuries however they treat you like a drug seeker even if you are in serious pain. I was run over by a garbage truck and nearly had to have my legs amputated. After three surgeries and staples from my groin to the bottom of my calf and stitches on my right leg from my knee to my ankle as well as huge open wounds 6 inches long, 2 inches wide, and one inch deep I was in an immobilizer on both legs. I was in the ICU for three days before being admitted to the main hospital where after two days I was put on only 20mg of oxycodone every 4 hours. I was in so much pain I couldnt move despite me telling them how bad I was hurting. After nearly passing out from pain, I called the office of clinical safety who reprimanded the doctors twice they barely upped my medication to 40mg which was still really 21.6 mg due to the fact that the extra 20mg was long lasting and was released over a 12 hour timeframe. Basically I was only upped by 1.6 mg per hour which did absolutely nothing for my pain. I wasnt able to participate in physical therapy or occupational therapy which made my insurance company not want to pay for my outpatient physical after I was discharged. Overall do not go to University of Michigan if you are in pain. It is a good hospital however their policies on pain medication is terrible and you may very well stay in pain if that is what you are going for.

I am neither a student nor a member of U of M AA's faculty, however, I've visited, quite often, a good friend of mine who is a student there. Often called Michigan University or University of Michigan, U of M AA has a lot in common with my own school, MSU. Both are part of Michigan's state university system, and both are, basically, very large division I sports complexes with a school tacked on. The big difference is that while MSU has an austere, modern, Iron Curtain look about the campus, U of M AA looks more like a college campus, a wee bit like those campuses you see in teen oriented movies or horror movies. Funny, because U of M AA's buildings, aren't older than MSU's. U of M AA has fairly nice libraries; you can see a photo of me walking through one of them, and scholastically, it's not much different from MSU. Sure, some majors are better, or at least available at one or the other school. The towns both schools are in are pretty nice: Ann Arbor feels a little smaller than Lansing. Calling U of M AA Michigan University or University of Michigan, is certainly a misnomer, since Flint and a couple other colleges are part of the U of M system.

Craig Washington

My 16 year old niece is considering attending the University. We took a campus orientation seminar and then roamed all 3 parts of campus. Lots to see and do. Museums, bars, restaurants, music venues, sports complexes, plus. Very impressive

Rose Smith

For my mom, it was the best place for her to be. It's a great hospital. They have a market some mornings you can go and buy fresh fruit and flowers. Big cafeteria with lots of choices. It can be confusing your first visit, but it's not as difficult to navigate as one would think. You could tell the specialists and doctors really cared and wanted to help. The gave the facts and diagnosis gently but without sugar-coat.

James Kotzian

In general, provides a lot of great resources with some amazing professors. Of course, this varies depending on your major and specific classes. Ann Arbor is a fantastic college town which really makes a difference since the school mixes with the city so much. I'm a sophomore now and I feel like my potential for success is only limited by myself. The opportunities are there for you at U of M. Go Blue!

Xiaobai T

Best public school

Pro Bee

It's a great school, but they do screw over their staff. The pay for researchers are insultingly low, and the raises are even more insultingly low. Employees that are let go due to cutbacks when try to get another job here, they make sure they're not paid even a dime more, even though by now they're more experienced. So if you're stuck at this place due to some personal and life issues, rest assured, you will be living below poverty line, even with an advanced degree and significant experience. HR is no help, and the big guy always wins. But they really need to treat their employees better, they are doing amazing work and contributing to society and you treat them as they'd be better off working as day laborers.

This place can be great or terrible. A lot of it depends on luck. And a lot of it is on the university for not being as competent as they claim they are. I don't personally feel that the faculty is treated well. And I think a lot of unnecessary stress is put on students. Of course some amount of stress is normal when at university but U of M takes it to another level. The financial aide program is a joke. Each person you talk to there will tell you different information from the last time you spoke with someone at the office, leaving you very confused. Advisors are over worked and not properly trained for the job. I'm not really sure who is the ultimate cause of the trouble many people face at U of M but I hope someone can figure it out so then everyone who works there or attends the school can have a good experience. The education over all is good. Wich of course is one of the top priorities. However with the way things are at the school now I don't know that the education is worth the money. The amount of stress and lack of help or accurate information is most definitely not worth the money. I would like to see U of M take people's complaints or issues with them seriously. Maybe someday the school will be more organized and everyone who is involved with it can have a great experience and gain the knowledge they need to succeed.

Christine Barrera-Dulger

U of M is right in the middle of downtown Ann Arbor and so it is extremely pleasant to walk around on campus. The academic buildings are extremely nice as well, inside and out. It is a very large school so the student generally remains fairly anonymous (but if they make an effort, they can stand out) so they remain distant from the professors. The University also has tons of extracurricular activities of all kinds -- which is awesome, but does make it difficult to find time to study. Overall, it's a great place to be and offers so many opportunities, it can be an amazing incubator for professional success.

Clearly your professor Lipold has no idea about basic history and his antisemetic bias should not extend into the public university. You are not paid to boycott, protest and discriminate. The govt needs to step in and investigate the professors with their blantant discrimination and defund these institutions that discriminate against other countries.

On 10/12/18 Michigan Tour guide Raoul seems to dislike "rich white men that donate 100 million dollars" to build a business school. Does it matter what skin color a man has Raoul? I thought you would not judge a man by his skin color or by how much money he has. What a poor representative to such an allegedly prestigious University.

My daughter went there, and "yes" they are very liberal in some ways, but they are not Mizzou thank God - for example they had a great graduation segment for the ROTC students - they were treated with great respect. Students here have the best academic and emotional support system of any Michigan public school, bar none. Some students who had to settle for MSU will be envious haters, but hey - that's life.

Very disappointed in this school. They had a booth during a college fair. The rep that stood behind their table continued to direct my son to the black schools, and continued with the same negative comments directed to my son. Not knowing my son is a straight A high honor student, who is also Captain of the Varsity football team at his school, and he was only a sophomore at the time. You should never judge a book by its cover. I am so disappointed in this school, and we moved here from Connecticut for our childrens education and for the great college opportunities out here...

Nothing but an overpriced emotional coddling center. Professors are so Liberal-biased that one can be ostracized and chastised if they do not conform to the victim status/bash whitey attitude. The University proved just how non-inclusive they are during the last election. Even the president ostracized a portion of the school population. It's a shame that these once respectable institutions of higher learning are slowly becoming cesspools of whining babies who leave, totally unprepared for the real, unforgiving, hostile world. Believe me, hate lives here.....every day. It's disguised though as intolerance of others' views.

I visited their campus for a day last September during the the weekend of the BYU football game and man this place was buzzing, I watched their baseball tryouts, saw some guy murder the ball, watched some of the track athletes do some hurdles too. Later I was told to just cruuuuuise down State Street I believe (may have been main) and I hit up the UM store, got myself a shirt, a hat and met my idol Derek Jeter. Yep. Made that trip truly one of the most memorable. Even as a huge MSU fan I would definitely go to UM to play ball or for education.

I love the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. I consider U of M, UCLA and SNHU three of the best colleges in the world. Ann Arbor, Westwood/Los Angeles, and Manchester are the three best college towns of all-time. Everyone here is so friendly and nice. Diverse community and very clean as well. Every single program is ranked best in the world as well! GO BLUE!!!!!

My son undoubtedly is enjoying Michigan and receiving a good education. However, if you are not a Michigan resident and won't get financial aid, the school is virtually as expensive as almost all private colleges. And every year, the tuition for out-of-state students goes up, both as a percentage and obviously in actual dollar cost, dramatically more than for in-state students. So, if you are in-state or if you are out-of-state and get financial aid, yes, this is a "best value" university. If neither applies to you, it absolutely is not, and I suggest you not pay any attention to the various statements you will see about "average cost" and the like. It's irrelevant to you.

A very confused college which clearly demonstrates its anti American culture, extremely happy daughter decided against attending it after short visit.

Very beautiful campus in downtown Ann Arbor. Nice places to sit on campus. Great school.

medicine, engineering, business, music, sciences, arts, ... you name it. michigan is simply the best. not just best in the big ten, but among other national universities like harvard and stanford. and with that kind of school spirit where everyone bleeds maize and blue, you don't want to study anywhere else. only downfall is the long and neverending winter.

Hi everyone although I have never personally been here I have heard that this school has a large medical program where everyone can excel. I think I will recommend this school to anyone who wants to go to medical school or study nursing.
