Excellent school to learn seamanship. They have several majors, but basically students concentrate on "Engine" or "Deck". "Engine" students become engineers and sit for Coast Guard license to become certified Third Engineer with unlimited tonnage. "Deck" students study navigation and sit for a CG Third Mate's license. It's a regimental school, meaning students wear uniforms, learn discipline and are subject to random drug tests. Employment opportunities are very good as are starting salaries. It's a great career, if you're cut out for it. The campus, here on the coast of Maine is STUNNING ... well maybe not in January, but it's nice in the summer LOL.

Great school, the classes are awesome and (most of) the teachers are really knowledgeable and helpful. However, this place is in the middle of nowhere, the administration for the school is horrible and doesn't prioritize what the students want, you must stay in the dorm until you are 21, the school is 90% guys, so the guys can be really creepy and the girls are super outnumbered. The first 2 weeks and the last 2 weeks of the year, the weather is good, and you can go sailing, swimming, kayaking, hiking... A lot of nature experiences! However, come early September to like mid May, it is a frozen, desolate, wasteland. I was grading this University off of the 'college experience' alone, I would give it 0 stars if I could. However, the academic side of the academy is that good that it deserves 3 stars. It comes down to this: if you value immediate happiness over long term happiness, DO NOT go here. If you can see a little farther into the future, this school might be for you, but you will not enjoy it.
